Florida International University's PerFORM[D]ance:

•Is a solar-powered house that performs in real time by sensing and responding to the generation and acquisition of energy

•"Dances" in response to the external conditions of its environment and the internal conditions of its use.

A contemporary interpretation of traditional porches, PerFORM[D]ance's canopy features a versatile design that adapts to the local tropical climate and allows various levels of enclosure. A counterbalance system allows the adjustable perimeter louvers to swing open, forming a wide canopy that fully shades the interior and exterior spaces. The louvered panels can also close tightly against the house to serve as hurricane shutters.

Innovative, building-integrated photovoltaics and solar thermal systems provide the highest levels of comfort for residents and the lowest possible impact on the environment.

Twenty-five College of Engineering and Computing students and one business major were recognized for their work and dedication to the FIU Solar House at a ceremony April 15 at the Engineering Center.

The honorees enjoyed an afternoon of camaraderie, drinks and hors d’oeuvres and received a certificate commemorating their efforts from Dr. Yong Tao, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Material Engineering.

Alicia is currently the NASA Vehicle Manager for the External Tank and Solid Rocket Boosters (NVM for ET/SRB) within the Operations Integration Branch of the Launch Vehicle Processing Directorate at John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida. In this capacity, Alicia is responsible for managing all NASA activities associated with the processing of the External Tank, Solid Rocket Boosters, and Mobile Launch Platform at KSC for every Space Shuttle mission.

for 33 Academic and Industry Teams

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., October 12, 2009 — BBN Technologies, an advanced technology solutions firm, announced today an $11.5M National Science Foundation grant for 33 academic/industrial research teams to accelerate prototyping of a suite of infrastructure for the GENI project with federation and shakedown experiments that will guide future GENI system design. GENI is sponsored by the National Science Foundation to support experimental research in network science and engineering.

Brick by brick: College of Engineering and Computing building park to honor alumni and friends

Dr. Girma Bitsuamlak, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, won the award for his proposal of a groundbreaking project that will employ computer simulation to determine wind flow fields around buildings. He will receive a total of $400,219 for a five-year study.
