The Aura of Art
Philosopher Walter Benjamin, in his essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction”, tells us that something important has been lost now that art can be duplicated so easily; that works of art have lost that special quality (or “aura”) that comes with context and uniqueness and, instead, have gained “exhibition value”.

Multi-funtion or Mono-function: Is either better? 
So many things in our lives are multi-funtion; smartphones, multitools… some mice have as many as 15 buttons. As we work harder and harder to make our gadgets smaller and smaller, we try to cram as much functionality into them as we can, hoping to make our pockets lighter in the process. The problem is that, most of the time, it just doesn’t work out. There is something to be said about doing one thing and doing it well.
Is it better to specialize or to consolidate and settle? Is this restricted to things, or do people apply to this as well?

A bill has been introduced into the senate that would give the Department of Justice and individuals new powers to enforce copyright and trademark law against “rogue” and “pirate” Web sites that offer unlicensed copies of protected content or which sell illegal knock-offs of brand-name goods by taking them off the internet. Never mind the questions of the technological feasibility of this bill, what do you think of the possible ramifications of this, if it even passes.

It’s almost universally understood that smoking is bad for you and, through second hand smoke, those around you. Almost every state in the U.S. has some kind of ordinance banning smoking within twenty feet of public buildings, but now there are cities like Pasadena, California looking to ban smoking altogether within city limits, including in private residences. They say a “man’s home is his castle”, so is this an admirable show of progressive thinking or a violation of the sovereignty of one’s own home?

How do you see the world the next five years? How about ten? Is the world going to become “a digital frontier to reshape the human condition” or just the status quo, only better?

I was only 18 at the time and Thaed had told me that it was his policy that hosts need to be 21 or older. –In his book “Brain Rules” John Medina advocates putting treadmills
in the classroom because exercise improves mental acuity.  He believes
ancient humans walked 12 miles a day and we should too.  Is this
workable?

–Contests held to improve technology dates back to contests in
England to see who could design the best locomotive.  Now, we have
DARPA prizes, the X-Prize and a host of others.  Should there be a
prize for every single societal problem?  Should we have a cure
malaria prize?  A stop homelessness prize?

–(From Jason) Big corporations are using viral media like “leaked
videos” (which are actually produced) like the Kobe Bryant kiddie pool
dunk video from Nike and the “fake” music videos which pretend to be
indie but are actually backed by a major record label.  Are major
commercial and advertising studios intimidated by the amateur video &
audio movement?

–“I let it run overnight” is a fun google search.  What things do you like to let run overnight and with what results?  What would you like to be able to let run overnight?

–What about a computer game for misers and jerks?  It would allow you to amass huge amounts of wealth, palaces and AI bots to order around. You start out by being born into royalty and deal with the intrigue of Louis the XIV.  Or something.  Or just a sandbox where you can horde, order and abuse at will.  AI slaves!  Millions of them.  That’s it. If we can’t have robot slaves, we can have AI slaves. Would it sell?
