Description: To take your driving analogy a bit further; I don't need to know how to drive like Michael Schumacher to give someone advise on how to drive. We all have our skills and weaknesses and need to draw on each other to help improve our photographic skills. I can make some jaw-dropping macros of flowers but really do need help with landscape and street-shooting. So if and when I ask for advise I sincerely want some positive input to improve.

But you are correct, proffering unsolicited critiques could lead to bruised egos.

Description: Tim, not disagreeing with your approach here as I am sure we can all learn something from getting feed back on there work. For me its like someone who prefers a red car over a white one. What each of us like or dislikes, really is in the eye of the beholder at times. Composition talkes about Rules and some of the best works out there did not fellow the rules. There are small changes one can make like a crop that totally changes the look if done correctly.

What I was trying to say was, for me, I would prefer to learn how to drive before instructing others on how to drive. Yes, listening or getting feedback from a professional, in any hobby, is important. I would not get ...

Description: I started this thread to share some things I've learned in my classes/workshops and actually didn't intend this to be about critiques. However, critiquing does tend to creep in here. Jim, I think your policy is wise as unless, ones prepared for a critique, too often egos can be bruised and feeling hurt, however, I learn a lot more about my photography from rational criticism than enthusiastic praise. Putting that into this thread, I have to say that, again from my current class, we are learning to critique images. The construct provided by my instructor is to post the images for viewing without any comment from the photographer. This makes you try to see or understand what the photographer intended in the image. We then try to break the image(s)down along these lines.

1. "What Works?" - What is good, engaging, well-done in the image? Technically and/or visually.

2. Any suggestions for improving aspects of the image? Technically and/or visually.

3. "What's the content?" - the meaning, the tone, expression/communication of the ...

Description: I personally try not to critique a image unless asked and in the end it is a subjective answer as I was not there to see what was available to shoot or if the shot fit the mood. [more about that later] I find everyone's eye sees different things within a given space and it would surprised a lot of people how different it can be. A slight move to right or left or lower to higher can add so much. When I shoot a scene I look for what is first strong in the image then highlight that within the frame.

One has to be careful not to over think a shot or even critiqueing a image, where we may not know what was totally available or why someone took the shot they did. I know this sounds wavey at best but ...

Ask yourself, what is the subject of that shot? The clouds, the trees, the day, I'm not sure. My eye is drawn to the brightest objects which are the distant clouds, which are limited by the horizon, and they are cut off at the top.

So, I'm thinking that it's a nice shot for travel but is it an art worthy photography that you want to wander around for a half an hour in?

Actually, laying down for some of these shots would have allowed us Pentax users, to test the water resistance of our camera / lens systems, not to mention the effectiveness of our second set of clothes...

He he he, it would have been an adventure! LOL I still have one of my Pentax K10Ds but never get to shoot with it. Thinking of selling it one of these days. Just been sitting in the closet ...
