The Board meets on campus bi-annually to receive updates on the Dean’s and College’s priorities, development updates, and discuss how the Board can align with and support those priorities to discuss and prepare upcoming plans for the College. Board officers also have a monthly executive committee virtual meeting that all board members are welcome to participate in.

The fall meeting focused on hearing Dean Kazmer’s insights and priorities for the College, as well as defining roles and responsibilities of the Board committees. The Board also announced new officers, received a development update and discussed fundraising.

“I look forward to continuing to work with the Board and its leadership team to ensure that the College of Communication and Information has the resources and visibility it needs to help Florida State University meet its strategic goals, and to help our students continue to excel during their time at Florida State University and into their careers,” shared CCI Dean Dr. Michelle Kazmer.

“The depth and scope of the Board’s industry expertise, talent, and experience is inspiring,” said CCI Leadership Board Chair Jeanne Ford. “I’m excited to see their innovation, creativity and results-driven dedication in action to support the Dean’s priorities and continue pushing the College of Communication and Information to new heights and accomplishments.

The Board welcomed two new members: Peter Burke and Arlene Borenstein.

Before a school can establish a library, the human capital required to operate one must be sourced or trained. This is where Dr. Duarte is focusing her research with Florida State University’s School of Information. “I came to FSU to do a research in a sabbatical year from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, where I am an associate Professor,” says Duarte, “a major problem for Brazil is that the librarian undergraduate and graduate schools at universities train generalists, and almost never include include courses that discuss school libraries.”

WCTV reported on a Tallahassee couple accused of attempting to steal nearly three quarters of a million dollars from the state’s unclaimed property vault. The heavily guarded vault is located in Tallahassee and contains millions in jewels, watches, coins and currency.

Thomas Penquite and Maria Gutierrez are being accused of trying to claim more than $733,000 from accounts that were not their own.

Department of Financial Services was able to stop the couple from leaving the building with any property. Officials were tipped off when the duo re-activated three corporations that had been defunct to make claims.

Pam Doffek, Director of the Goldstein Library in the School of Information, was asked about the public availability of corporate documents online. Doffek easily found that all documents were easy to find. The mentioned documents were still there and had Gutierrez’s name on them.

Doffek told WCTV, “The public records were right there,” she said. “Paperwork looked good, whether it was legal or illegal, whether they were fraudulent or not fraudulent.”

Doffek has contributed as a source to WCTV articles for years and said the open access records allowed her to help in this situation.

Are you interested in a career in Music Libraries? Keep up with the latest cataloging methods in this 90-minute workshop, Thursday, July 31, 2014, 2:30pm Eastern. The online workshop will be presented in The CAVE, Goldstein Library. The workshop is supported financially by our colleagues in the Warren D. Allen Music Library here at FSU.

In this workshop, Nancy Lorimer and Kevin Kishimoto will teach you the basics of cataloging music scores using RDA: Resource Description and Access, the new global cataloging standard and successor to AACR2. This workshop will be invaluable for anyone who catalogs music scores.

Topics include:
-RDA instructions pertaining to notated music and its location in the RDA Toolkit
-Differences between RDA and AACR2 instructions for cataloging scores
-Supplemental guidelines for cataloging music in RDA, including the Music Library Association’s Best Practices
-MARC fields and subfields that accommodate RDA data for notated music

About the Instructors
Nancy Lorimer is the Head of Music Technical Services at Stanford University, where she was previously a co-leader of the RDA implementation group. Since 2010, she has been cataloging music materials of all types and creating music authority records. She is Chair of the Music Library Association Genre/Form task force and coordinator for the SACO Music Funnel. She is a member of the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee and represents Music on the Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials steering committee and RDA committee. Lorimer was an instructor for the joint California Library Association/Music Library Association, Southern California Chapter webinar on music cataloging in 2012 and at MLA’s 2013 RDA preconference.

Kevin Kishimoto is the Music Cataloger at the University of Chicago, where for over three years he has been using RDA to catalog audio recordings, scores, books, videos, and other oddities. He is an active member of the Music Library Association’s Subject Access Subcommittee which, in conjunction with the Library of Congress, developed a new thesaurus for musical medium of performance. He is also a member of the JSC Music Working Group, assisting the JSC in the revision and development of instructions for describing music resources in RDA. Kishimoto is an instructor and presenter on RDA music topics and recently taught a three-day workshop on music cataloging in RDA. He was also an instructor for MLA’s 2013 RDA preconference.

Founded in 1931, Music Library Association (MLA) is the professional organization in the United States devoted to music librarianship and all aspects of music materials in libraries.
