2016 HBCU All- Star Application now Available

The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) works to promote HBCU excellence, innovation, and sustainability. The Initiative recognizes undergraduate, graduate, and professional students for their accomplishments in scholarship, leadership, and civic engagement. Nominate an HBCU All- Star today! Application and Review Process are attached. Program details and eligibility rules are listed below.

PROGRAM DETAILS

The appointment period will last approximately one year, and during this time students will serve as ambassadors of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities by providing outreach opportunities and communications to their fellow students about the value of education and the Initiative as a networking resource. Through social media, personal and professional relationships with community-based organizations, student will share promising and proven practices that support opportunities for all young people to realize their educational and career potential. The program will provide an opportunity to participate in regional and national events, as well as, web chats with Initiative staff and other professionals from a wide range of disciplines that support a spirit of engagement and personal and professional development.

ELIGIBILITY AND RULES

1. Nominee must be a current undergraduate, graduate, or professional student at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Student must be enrolled for the 2016-2017 fall semester.

Sophomore revives FVSU recycling program in dorms

Fort Valley State University sophomore Demetrius Calloway said he is on a mission to help preserve and beautify his institution. Recently, the animal science major and self-described environmentalist helped to restore a defunct recycling program in the university's residence halls.

In addition to being tasked with placing recycling containers in all the residence halls, Calloway said his advocacy also resulted in a new title of Recycling Program Coordinator through the Student Government Association (SGA).

“I’m on a mission to beautify this campus," said Calloway, who also is an FVSU Peer Educator. "I encourage students to utilize the recycling bins around campus respectfully and in the proper manner that they were intended for."

Wallace Keese, FVSU's Dean of Students, called Calloway's efforts "timely."

"I think it is very timely and a very unique initiative that is being led by a student who is conscientious enough about campus beautification to do something not just short-term, but long term."

Keese also said Calloway's project, which focuses on the residence halls, also ties in nicely with another recycling initiative underway at FVSU that is being spearheaded by two student athletes who are focusing on the academic areas of campus.

"Those students have gone so far as to contact Peach County to ensure pickup of the recycled items each week," Keese said. "I'm thrilled to see our students be so engaged."

Calloway said the new bins in the dorms are only the first step in his “Operation Campus Clean-Up."

“I want students to take full responsibility and own up to their actions by reducing, if not, eliminating the littering and pollution that is done on campus," he said.

Calloway also plans to promote more responsibility on the part of his fellow students to clean up after themselves and decrease the struggles of custodians and janitors.

Judge Lockette to serve as 75th FVSU Commencement speaker - May 7

An accomplished legal eagle and scholar will give graduating seniors advice to help them navigate life after college during the FVSU commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7 in the Health and Physical Education Complex. Judge Willie Earl Lockette, chief judge of the Superior Court of Dougherty County and an FVSU alumnus, will serve as the keynote speaker.

Lockette graduated summa cum laude from A. S. Clark High School in Cordele, Ga.; then, earned his bachelor's degree in history and political science from Fort Valley State College in 1971. At FVSC, Lockette was a Journalism Club member, the Political Science Association president, and The Peachite campus newspaper editor-in-chief. He was also a member of the Sigma Chi Forensic Society, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society.

Lockette graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1974 where he earned his Juris Doctorate. Later that year, he was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia and certified to practice law before the Georgia Supreme Court, Georgia Court of Appeals, the U .S. Districts Courts for the Middle and Northern Districts of Georgia, and the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits.

He has earned professional diplomas in trial advocacy and general jurisdiction from the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, Emory University, College of Law, and the National Judicial College, and University of Nevada-Reno.

The judge started his legal career as a staff attorney with Georgia Legal Services Program's Inc.'s Georgia Office. He was promoted to managing attorney three years later.

Lockette has served numerous impoverished citizens within the state and litigated several significant cases within Georgia's trial and appellate courts at the state and federal level. For his efforts, Lockette was the first person to receive the Dan Bradley Award for Public Service.

Lockette also served as an adjunct professor of political science, history and public administration at Albany State University. In 1991, the FVSU alum was appointed associate judge of the Magistrate Court of Dougherty County in Albany on a part-time basis. In 1993, he was appointed chief judge of the Magistrate Court on a full-time basis. In 1996, the citizens of Dougherty County elected him as judge of the Superior Court of Dougherty County. He has been re-elected to four additional four-year terms without opposition. He has served as chief judge of the Superior Court of Dougherty County since 2009.

He has received numerous civic religious, social and professional awards. He is an ordained Baptist minister who has been married for 46 years to his wife, Helen. He has four children, 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), in partnership with Lowe's, is pleased to provide financial assistance scholarships to undergraduate students at TMCF member-schools who are in their final semester of their degree program and scheduled to graduate in the Spring 2016 semester. Students must have an unmet financial need ranging from $500 and not to exceed $3,100.

To be eligible, applicants must:

In an effort to raise funds for student scholarships at Fort Valley State University, the campus has launched a new initiative called Tuesday TEXT - 2 - DONATE. The fundraising drive is part of a collaborative effort with the Tom Joyner Foundation.

The nonprofit sponsored by radio personality Tom Joyner has selected Fort Valley State University and its rival Albany State University as the national "Schools of the Month" for November 2016 in an effort to raise funds for both institutions.

Fort Valley State University’s new campus queen is a 20-year-old Waycross, Ga, native who hopes to use her new platform to help inspire young women. Candice Howard, a business management major, recently topped a field of three finalists to win the Miss FVSU 2016-2017 title during campus-based elections by students.

“I’ve always had a love for inspiring young women,” Howard said. “My only passion has been to mentor and guide girls into becoming polished, young ladies. After I graduate, I plan to invest in a nonprofit organization that will be centered around mentoring young girls and helping them to become elegant young ladies.”

During the two-day voting process, students also selected 22-year-old Kalo Oglesby as Mr. FVSU 2016-2017. Oglesby, a Woodbury, Ga. native who is majoring in middle grades education with a concentration in science and history, said he would use his new platform to spur the campus community to become change agents.

“I plan on challenging them to serve as the change agents on campus, and not just be docile,” Oglesby said. “I’m asking them to show up and perform. Take an active part on campus to be your best at every juncture. I also hope to bridge the gap between the staff and the students.”

Oglesby said his love for FVSU was a direct byproduct of his two parents who are both Wildcat alums.

“I am a direct product of what the university stands for,” he said. “My father, Lang Oglesby, and my mother, Myesheia Yarber, are both proud graduates of Fort Valley State University.”

Ogelsby currently serves as the vice president of the Georgia Association of Education, and formerly served with the Student Government Association as its director of Public Relations and Student Affairs. He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and has served as an opinion columnist for the Peachite, FVSU’s student newspaper.

“I felt it was time to have a king that truly believed in the brand of FVSU,” Oglesby said, “I am a direct product of what the university stands for. My father, Lang Oglesby, and my mother, Myesheia Yarber, are both proud graduates of Fort Valley State University.”

Ogelsby currently serves as the vice president of the Georgia Association of Education, and formerly served with the university’s Student Government Association as its director of Public Relations and Student Affairs. He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He also belonged to the campus’ Peachite staff as an opinion columnist.

Howard, who said she has dreamed about being an FVSU queen since her freshman year, said the actual competition taught her important lessons about herself.

“It was challenging, but I got through the competition,” she said. “It taught me about strengths that I didn’t even know I had. Because I was passionate about everything, it came easily as a breeze.”

Howard is involved in several organizations on campus including the National Council of Negro Women, the National Association of Black Accountants and the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society. She is currently interning in the president’s office.

During her reign, the new Miss FVSU said she also plans to serve as an ambassador to help the university with its recruitment efforts.

In addition to electing the king and queen, the campus also selected the other members of the royal court along with class officers for the 2016-2017 school year. The induction ceremony for new officers and the royal court will take place Tuesday, April 26 in the Student Amenities Building’s second floor banquet room.

Students make final pitch for FVSU student leadership roles; voting ends Friday

(April 14, 2016) - Students recently gathered inside Fort Valley State University’s Pettigrew Center to hear their 2016-2017 candidates for the Student Government Association’s executive board and our FVSU Royal Court. Brian Byrd, director for the Office of Campus Life, started the ceremony off by congratulating the candidates for a successful campaign week and provided a reminder to students about voting policies.

Roughly 100 students welcomed the sophomore, junior and senior class candidates; as well as the SGA executive board candidates to the podium. A group of young men and women with comprising voices showed deep interest in their fellow students and strong belief in their institution.

SGA president candidate, Lawrence Malloy, grabbed the audience’s attention by shouting “Thee Fort Valley State University is the best school anywhere, anytime, and any place!”

Malloy continued to express how passionate he is about uplifting his university and making sure students are satisfied.

Mr. Fort Valley State University candidate, Kalo Olgesby, touched hearts by speaking on his first experience walking on FVSU’s campus, and witnessing the unity among the students when he was just a child.

“At that time, I felt the energy of the campus. People were together, and we have to get back together. We have to get back to loving each other,” Olgesby said. He believes the legacy that we leave is everything that we give, and that he is a product of what the university has done and will do for others.

Miss Fort Valley State University candidate, Candice Howard began her speech by letting her fellow students know that being Miss Fort Valley State University has been a dream of hers since the day she stepped on campus soil.

“If given the opportunity, I plan to work and find solutions to the problems faced by my wildcat peers,” Howard said.

Now that the speeches have been made, elections will be taking place in the Student Amenities Building on April 14-15, between the hours of 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Fort Valley State University welcomed more than 250 prospective students and their parents to the 2016 Winter Open House, held Saturday, Feb. 20 in the campus’ Student Amenities Building.

Open house recruits new students and gives them—and their parents—an opportunity to see what FVSU has to offer, from campus life and career services to residential life and academic programs.

Several faculty and staff members attended the spring recruitment affair to share departmental information at booths that lined the building’s first floor.

Rocio Castillo, FVSU junior and CDEP scholar, stated, "The most that I took away from this event was the fact that I enjoyed seeing students interact with professors, administrators and other FVSU students."

Dr. Jacques Surrency, FVSU assistant professor of environmental soil science, stated, "What I enjoyed most about this open house is meeting students and parents, and informing them about the field of agriculture.”

FVSU's College Prom: A second chance at cool

When you hear the word prom it is often followed by memories from high school. Whether it was an enjoyable experience or not, you can always bet that everyone has something to say about their prom experience.

Some may say that prom is once-in-a-lifetime experience; but what would you do if you could relive that experience again?

Fort Valley State University students will get an opportunity to do just that with an upcoming event called the FVSU Official Program.

On Feb. 19 2016, the Campus Activity Board is hosting a program campus prom at the Pettigrew Center Ballroom at 7 p.m. The free event is open to all FVSU student. The attire is formal wear and the campus dress code will be enforced, organizers said.

Knilah Waters, a freshmen early childhood education major, said she is excited about upcoming event that was also hosted last year.

“Prom is a way for students to relive great memories and create new ones,” said Waters, a member of the C.A.B.

The theme of this year’s college prom is Casino Royale and will include photos, food, dancing and fun.

FVSU students shine as only HBCU in national agricultural economic competition

A group of students majoring in agricultural economics recently participated in a San Antonio, Texas competition sponsored by the Southern Agricultural Economics Association. The national SAEA Quiz Bowl consisted of more than 200 students from 21 universities from all over the nation. These students compete in this battle of the minds to display their knowledge about the business of agriculture and have to come up with plans to solve real world issues. The SAEA conference was held from Feb. 6-9.

The Fort Valley State University team attends this conference every year. This year senior Sierra Ayers made it to the eighth round. The competition has 12 rounds total.

“I am so proud to be a part of this team, we were the only HBCU in attendance at the conference, so to have placed was truly an honor,” said Ayers.

According to the association, this year students from 21 universities participated in the quiz bowl. At least six of these universities had not sent students to compete before. Of those sending students this year, 11 of the universities were 1862 Land Grants, Fort Valley State was was the only 1890s land grant institution and the others were regional state schools. The student numbers were the highest they have ever been at 126 students with the next highest year being 94. Most of this increase can be explained by the number of students brought by universities participating in the quiz bowl for the first time.

What’s the buzz around the yard about Beyoncé’s “Formation”?

Queen B is once again shaking the table and surfacing mainstream media with her new controversial song “Formation”. The song focuses on not only Beyoncé’s roots from her mother and father, but also features an outcry to the “Black Lives Matter” Movement.

This video is quite frankly graphic in some cases due to the scenes featured but the time has come in which an A-List celebrity brought attention to the movement and none other than the Queen of R&B chose to do it.

While many mainstream media outlets such as CNN, NBC, FOX is criticizing the video for bashing police and glorifying the Black Panther Party, others such as rapper T.I. are supporting the artist stating that anyone who backlashes the video is “Un-American”.

We have heard the opinions of outside media sources, so I decided to take it to the students of Fort Valley State University and ask for their opinion on the song.

Tekia Parks, an FVSU sophomore and a FVSU Dancing Doll Diva, said she loved the video.

“I love Beyoncé.,” Parks said. “She is definitely my sprit animal. In Formation, she is showing that no matter what the world has to say, black women slay regardless. In this video, she is showing that black women slay in a fun and upbeat manner. With this song making small comments about black features, if we don’t have confidence in ourselves, who can we rely on? This song is just about love, confidence, and black girl power and I’m here for it.”

While most students were in favor of the video and supported Queen Bey, others declined to comment due to the fact that they are not big fans of discussing pro black or anything that deals with the #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement.

I personally think that it was time for an A-list celebrity to bring attention to an increasing problem that has yet to be addressed in our society today. Many African Americans are in an uproar due to inequality in America. It is sad that something that could have been solved years ago is still of relevance today.

So I say, thank you Beyoncé for being brave and setting forth the effort to bring attention to such a national issue in America today.

The Classic Face Off - FVSU vs. ASU

The Fort Valley State University Wildcats are sharpening their claws this week as they prepare for Feb. 20,2016 as they take on arch rivals Albany State University Rams.

Because the matchup is considered FVSU’s Spring Basketball Homecoming, the activities will include appearances by the Blue Machine Marching Band, Phases Dance Team and the FVSU Cheerleaders.

The event will make the second time this season the Wildcats have faced the Golden Rams. On Feb. 6 , FVSU’s men and women won both games at Albany’s campus. The men’s game went into overtime with the Wildcats winning 66-63. The Lady Wildcats won 65-63.

   This season for the Wildcats has been one full of highs and lows for both teams, but they are fighting to end on a good note.

Tickets for general admission are $10 for faculty and staffers; FVSU students enter free with current ID. Group tickets are $15 for 20 or more. VIP seating tickets are $40. Children five and under enter free. For more information, visit wildcatticketoffice.com

Anime makes a way at FVSU

Fort Valley State University’s very first officially established Anime club is finally here on campus and they are looking for interested students to join.

According to organizers, the club is essentially a sub-community within the school, representing all things in modern pop-culture: movies, gaming, cartoons, comics, magna, and of course, anime.

There are no requirements to join the group. However, there are $15 due per semester for members. The club meets on the 2nd floor of the campus library every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9 p.m.

In addition to the meetings, the group also plans to host free campus-wide events every Friday. They also plan to host a university-wide gaming tournament for all interested students. A schedule of upcoming event will be posted around campus on Feb. 12.

FAST FACT: In modern reference, Anime/Magna and Cartoons/Comics have very slight differences, but are still deemed independent from one another. Each represents a separate genre of animation. FVSU student selected as SIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Shereba Montgomery was recently selected as the SIAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, announced by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) on Monday.

Montgomery, a 5-11 junior forward from Abbeville, Ga. helped the Lady Wildcats to a 3-0 week.

She averaged 9.7 points and 11.3 rebounds last week.

In a 65-63 win against Clark Atlanta, Montgomery recorded 19 rebounds and nine points. Montgomery added 10 points and six rebounds in a 59-48 win over Tuskegee. In the final game of the week, she helped Fort Valley defeat Miles 71-55 with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Montgomery also recorded five blocks, five steals, and three assists throughout the week.

Wildcats win first conference game over Paine 87-84

(January 16, 2016) – Senior center Ralph Wilson led Fort Valley State University Wildcats (3-15; 1-7) with a double-double team-high 19-points and game-high 13 rebounds to first conference win 87-84 of the season over Paine College (4-14; 1-8) Saturday afternoon at the HEAL Complex on Paine's campus. The Wildcats had lost 11 games straight games and 7 straight SIAC games.

Wilson made 7-of-14 shots from the field, went 5-for-5 at the free throw line, had one assist, blocked one shot and two steals. Senior guard Dareial Franklin added 19-points, senior point guard Marcelis Hansberry with 14 and junior guard LeRoy Broner chipped in 12.

Patrick Petty led the Lions in scoring with a game-high 28-points, while Kaderious Compton scored 21 and 11 rebounds, Christian Nobles and Arnis Libazs had 13 and 12-points.

First half, FVSU took a 46-38 lead to halftime. Wilson scored the first three points on a jumper and free throw 3-0 and Broner's jumper increased the lead to 16-points (33-17) at the 6:19 mark.

High school students, adult learners and military members can receive a firsthand look at academic programs, residential housing and student life at an upcoming event on Fort Valley State University’s campus. The university will host its 2016 Winter Open House on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, from 1- 4:30 p.m. in the Student Amenities Building. Campus tours of the grounds and campus housing will also be available.

In addition to showcasing academic research and mentoring programs, visitors will get a chance to meet and greet current students, faculty and staffers. They also will be able to attend the 2016 FVSU Wildcat Basketball Homecoming in the Health and Physical Education Complex. The game starts at 6 p.m. for the Lady Wildcats and at 8 p.m. for the men’s team. Admission for the evening game is $20 per person.
“FVSU’s Open House is a great opportunity to become intimately engaged with FVSU,” said Sha-Ron Jones, the university’s director of recruitment. “It is a unique opportunity for our visitors to experience FVSU and attend the basketball homecoming game. It is also a wonderful time to learn about our academic offerings, residential life and financial aid packages.”

Applicants can speak with representatives from FVSU’s offices of admissions, campus life, career services, residential life, ROTC, and academic areas. Students will also be able to speak with professors and deans from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Graduate Studies and Extended Education, Education and Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology about degree offerings. Students who bring a sealed transcript and test scores and meet FVSU’s admissions standards receive an admissions decision on sight.

“Another great feature of our Winter Open House is that students will get the opportunity to experience the Wildcat Spirit as we take on archrival Albany State University,” Jones said.
FVSU financial aid counselors will also give tips about completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, forms needed to send to the financial aid office, and how to use the Banner Web system to approve financial aid.

FVSU students visit Georgia Port Authority

Six Fort Valley State University students — Teris Dixon, Nicholas Finley, Antionna Jefferson, Tanisha Leonard, Willie Mitchell and Norman Whittington — recently took a trip to a major United States port to learn about future career opportunities in supply chain management. The group visited the Georgia Port Authority facility in Savannah, Ga. on Nov. 9 as part of the Warehousing and Terminal Management class. They were accompanied by their instructor, Dr. Samuel Gyapong, chair of FVSU’s Department of Business and Economics, and David Salone, an FVSU supply chain logistics management instructor.

“The visit was a follow up to a similar visit to the Tractor Supply Warehouse in Macon as part of the requirements for the course,” Gyapong said. “That requirement is an effort to expose our students to Warehousing and Shipping terminals, which form the stopping points in the complex global Supply Chain, and the exciting career opportunities in these areas of the U.S. economy.”

The group was received on arrival by Stacy Watson, general manager of economic and industrial development for the Georgia Port Authority. He took the group on a bus tour of the facility to see several functional areas of the port and the equipment used for loading and offloading of ships. The students also viewed the loading of a container ship in progress and saw a leaded ship leaving the port. They also learned how arriving or departing containers are scanned for illegal goods using infra-red scanners. There were acres of containers either awaiting shipment or waiting to be scanned prior to being loaded on ships.

After the tour, the group was taken into a conference room in the office building, where Watson gave a 45-minute presentation tracing the history of the port through its development stages to the current status of the port as the 4th largest container seaport (in volume of import and export traffic) in the United States.

“The PowerPoint presentation also covered planned development which includes millions of state and federal funds for expansion of the harbor, known as the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP), which will create more jobs at all levels and further increase the capacity of the port, and deepening of the water to accommodate even heavier container ships,” Gyapong said. “This trip was quite an eye-opening experience for the students as well as the faculty members who accompanied them. Mr. Watson has agreed to take on some of our bright students on summer internship that could lead to career opportunities for the interested student. He revealed that it was through internship that he got started at the GA Port Authority.”

FVSU restructures its history and political science bachelor’s degree programs

A Fort Valley State University department is overhauling two degree programs on campus to meet the career and academic needs of students. Recently, Dr. Dawn Herd-Clark, chair of the university’s History, Geography, Political Science and Criminal Justice program, announced that the campus is still offering bachelor’s degrees in both history and political science. The university also is launching a new pre-law track for students, as well as changing the credit hour requirements for students to earn degrees within both areas.

According to the departmental chair, potential students have been calling about the departmental degree tracks at FVSU since the university eliminated some under-performing academic programs during the Summer 2015.

“I had a student who came for the last open house that was interested in history, and her tour guide told her that history was no longer a major on Fort Valley State’s campus, which is not the case,” Herd-Clark said. “Although the master’s degree program in history was eliminated, we do offer bachelor’s degree in that area.”

Herd-Clark explained that bachelor’s degrees in history and political science allow for students to enter into career fields in law, the federal government, research and education.

Herd-Clark says that the bachelor’s degree program for both majors were restructured and that both the history and political science majors credit-hour requirements are now in line with other University System of Georgia campuses. The departmental chair says the history program once required 45 hours to be completed for students to earn a bachelor’s degree.

“We have retooled our programs meet the demands of students’ needs,” Herd-Clark said. “We have reduced the number of credit hours for our programs to make them more in line with our sister University System of Georgia institutions and to make the degrees more flexible.”

She says the history program will now require only 27 credit hours (in their major area) to earn a bachelor’s degree, and political science program now requires 24 hours. The university also is retooling the programs to meet the needs of students entering law.

“As a way to attract students the political science program, we have added a pre-law track,” she said. “Fort Valley State has a lot of students who want to become attorneys, and a lot of schools in this country offer pre-law classes. This pre-law track makes it apparent for those students who are pursuing law school.”

There are honor societies and clubs available for history and political sciences majors within the department including the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society for history majors, Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences, the Fort Valley State University Historical Society, and the FVSU Political Science Student Association.

Additionally, FVSU provides scholarships and opportunities to work with an exhibit that is sponsored by the Georgia Humanities Council and Smithsonian Institute that will come to campus in 2017.

Themed "Celebrating Scholars," the event is the largest single-day fundraiser providing scholarships for FVSU students. The luncheon will be held in the university's Health and Physical Education Complex at noon. U.S. Congressman Sanford Bishop and Georgia Rep. Calvin Smyre will serve as hosts.

(Fort Valley, Ga.) - Fort Valley State University has been chosen as one of two Tom Joyner Foundation 'Schools of the Month' for November 2016 Throughout the month of November 2016, the organization will promote raising funds for the university and highlight its programs and students. FVSU will share the honor with Albany State University.

Tom Joyner, a nationally syndicated radio personality, formed the foundation in an ongoing effort to support historically black colleges and universities. The "Schools of the Month" drive assists chosen institutions in broadening and strengthening their efforts to raise money to help students attending HBCUs.

As one of the "Schools of the Month," Fort Valley State University will be promoted by the Tom Joyner Morning Show and receive funds raised from listeners, alumni and other interested parties in November for student scholarships. The show airs in more than 100 markets around the country and reaches nearly eight million listeners every week.

Dr. Melody Carter, Fort Valley State's vice president for External Affairs and executive director for the FVSU Foundation, Inc., said the initiative would be an exciting opportunity to encourage more support for FVSU student scholarships.

"Fort Valley State University always looks forward to partnering with the Tom Joyner Foundation" Carter said. "We will be rolling out exciting challenges to foster the spirit of competition to support student scholarships."

Every week in November, the foundation also will award a $1,500 Hercules Scholarship to a qualified male student. The recipients will be announced on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and social media each Thursday morning.

FVSU institutes a hoverboard ban in residence halls

Jan. 15, 2016 - Fort Valley State University has banned electronic skateboards, self-balancing boards and scooters from all residence halls amid concerns that the "hover boards" pose a safety hazard.

Several consumers have reported that the devices' lithium-ion batteries have ignited and set ablaze while recharging, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is conducting an investigation regarding the safety of these devices. Because of the potential fire hazard, several airlines, including Atlanta-based Delta Airlines, have banned the toy from their flights.

Fort Valley State University's ban of the hoverboards was made effective the Spring 2016 semester.

FVSU's Director of Housing and Residential Life Shawn Modena said although the devices are not prohibited from other areas on campus, the ban of the devices inside residence halls will remain in place until adequate safety measures are established for the devices.

"The batteries in these devices can burst into flames, especially while being charged, and while not in use," Modena said in a statement. "This can result in a metal fire that can burn with an intense heat. Several safety and consumer agencies are investigating numerous fires and injuries related to these devices. We are not willing to risk the safety of students, or the safety of the university community."

Modena said once safety policies for the devices are developed by relevant state and federal agencies, the university may reconsider the decision to ban the item from residence halls.

This year’s biggest movement will be in fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Not sure where to start on your New Year’s resolution? First, take a moment to write down your ultimate physical goal and any improvements you would like to see.

Next, make time for your health and create a schedule where you include up to 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Any type of movement of the body is considered exercise; therefore, this doesn’t mean you’ll be in the gym seven days a week.

Strive to include some kind of activity, even if it is just walking the dog or riding a bike.

When reducing your intake of unhealthy foods, remember to replace them healthy alternatives.

Try preparing more of your own meals. Cooking at home will help you control what goes in and out of the kitchen, and monitor what actually goes into your food.

Once you’re ready to make a change, it may seem difficult to stay committed, but don’t let that discourage you!

Stay motivated, take control of your life and remember it isn’t a diet, it is a lifestyle.
