Est-ce que la taille est importante ?

Depuis le jour que j’ai lu Does size matter? Yes it does, j’ai commencé à me dire que ça vaut peut-être la peine de moderniser la mise en page de Camera Obscura. Maintenant, les vignettes des photos accompagnant les articles sont beaucoup plus grandes qu’auparavant, occupant toute la largeur de la colonne de texte. Je demande donc aux lecteurs : préférez vous la précédente mise en page avec des petites vignettes ou la nouvelle avec les plus grandes ?

Dans son article Michel Mazzoni nous décris sa vision de la photographie et ses séries récentes : zones, fragments théories et ordinary landscapes. Une photographie souvent dépouillée et caractérisée par une certaine froideur et impartialité, le quotidien devient anonyme, les paysages interchangeables. Une photographie inspirée par les films de grands réalisateurs de cinéma des années soixante, tel Blow-up de Michelangelo Antonioni.

Deep Surface Reflections

Les mannequins ne sont pas la réalité de notre société, mais seulement le reflet de sa surface.

La mode, la façon de s’habiller, le soin de sa propre image, sont tous des aspects superficiels des société occidentales de consommation, mais tout de même permettent de tenir compte de son essence. Les mannequins sont un reflet de cet reflet. La rue est la surface de la ville, le reflet de la vie à l’intérieur des maisons et des bâtiments. La photographie elle-même est une représentation superficielle de la réalité, seule une réflexe de ce qui est sous la surface.

La série Deep Surfaces Reflections est une exploration visuelle qui rebondir entre ces différentes couches de surface et des réflexe.

Le travail photographique de Sophie Tramier, rigoureusement en lumière naturelle, est dédié aux matières, transparences, formes. Poissons, fruit des mer, gâteaux, assiettes, couverts, bouteilles… tous ces objets prennent vie devant son objectif, pour constituer des images d’une composition élégante et raffinée. Au delà de la simple nature morte, c’est un moyen de révéler son univers et son histoire personnelle.

Les Any males de Didier Illouz

Didier Illouz travail avec la photo, le graphisme, la retouche numérique et le tournages de films.

Dans sa série « Any males » il à photographié des personnes de son entourage, et dans la suite – grâce aux possibilités de montage offertes par la retouche numérique- a mélangé leur visages avec celui d’un animal de leur choix.

Le résultat sont des êtres hybrides, mis hommes, mis animaux, qui rappellent les visons mystiques des traditions du chamanisme, les métamorphoses des lycanthropes, des rêves mystérieux de thérianthropie.

Si assez souvent des projets aussi poussées de retouches aboutissent à des images évidement fausses et de mauvais goût, les photographie de Didier Illouz sont très élégantes et équilibrées, avec le plus souvent un beau noir et blanc aux teintes sépia, une gamme de gris qui rappelle les photos tirées pré-exposant le papier pour les voiler. Une belle façon de faire le tour entre l’imaginaire visionnaire du numérique et les traditions photographiques.

Jean-Marie Francius est un photographe de mode qui développe un travail personnel sur les femmes. Travail rigoureusement argentique et traditionnel, en réaction au numérique qui domine la photographie commerciale, magnifiques tirages noir et blanc réalisés personnellement dans sa petite mais super équipé chambre noir. La méthode traditionnelle permet de récupérer une approche lente et intime à la photographie, une dimension différente, qui donne la délicatesse et élégance des images de Jean-Marie Francius.

En occasion de cette interview Jean-Marie m’as envoyé beaucoup de ces photos de nus et à une résolution qui rends très agréable le visualiser même à l’écran. Plutôt que sélectionner seulement une partie de ces images j’ai préféré créer deux galeries indépendantes avec toutes les photos : discrètes apparences et les anges.

Galerie avec les photos de la série Anges de Jean-Marie Francius. Tirages argentiques de l’auteur.

Les photos de cette série de nus représentent des femmes-anges. Les ailes ont été grattées sur le négatif, obtenues avec de l’acide, dessinées sur les tirages ou encore ont été collé au dos des femmes, des amies ou proches de Jean-Marie Francius.

Les tirages sont de formats divers, il y souvent des diptyques ou même des triptyques, mais ils sont tous de très petit format, intimes et poétiques. Ils ont tous été réalisés par l’auteur dans sa chambre noire traditionnelle.

Galerie avec les photos de la série Discrètes apparences de Jean-Marie Francius. Tirages argentiques de l’auteur.

C’est une série de nus, mais on ne regarde jamais en face le modèles, on n’aperçoit jamais un visage, il s’agit de portrait de dos de femmes. Les photos sont très élégants et raffines, les poses sont souvent celle de la tradition classique, ce qui donné une sensation nostalgique et poétique. La même petite table est le seul élément récurrent du décor, il y a juste cette lumière douce qui touche avec grâce les corps des femmes. Les vrais tirages en plus sont véritablement superbes.

Les photographies de “i demoni”, note technique

Ithea, 2007. Tirage charbon 13cmx19cm sur papier satiné Fabriano Artistico Traditional White 38cmx56cm, bords naturels.

Toutes les images de la série i demoni ont été prise avec un objectif catadioptrique, ou objectif à miroir, qui a un rendu assez spécial du bokeh, cette à dire du flou d’arrière plan. Bien que le flou soit intense les objets conservent une structure spatiale importante, comme si ils étaient la superpositions de plusieurs images. La signature du catadioptrique est visible des fois dans des petits anneaux superposé à l’image, complets ou partiels, qui sont l’empreinte lumineuse d’un point déformé par le diaphragme en anneau de l’objectif.

Les photographies ont été volontairement prise hors focus pour exploiter cette caractéristique des objectifs miroir et volontairement sousexposé pour obtenir une atmosphère sombre.

Does size matter?

Since I read Does size matter? Yes it does, I started to tell me that maybe it worths to modernize the layout of Camera Obscura. Now the thumbnails of the photos accompanying the articles are much larger than before, occupying the entire width of the text column. I ask the readers: do you prefer the previous layout with small thumbnails, or the new one with larger ones?

In this article Miyuki Okuyama, in addition to telling her childhood in a small village in northern Japan, explains her personal vision of photography. For Miyuki Okuyama, instead of documenting some kind of tangible reality, photography provides an access to a parallel world in which we can lose ourselves in our dreams and fantasies.

“Safe Playgroud”, the series of photos described in the essay, is entirely built and staged at home, (in a certain way like the dark worlds by Hyeyoung Kim, but in a much more realistic style), creating beautiful mysterious micro-worlds, explicitly in contrast to the accurate organization of Netherlands, the country where Miyuki Okuyama lives today.

I really like the panoramic format, and I think it is a shame that usually it is used only for classic landscape, most of the pictures out there have the 1:1 or 2:3 format. It is the same for music, i love the 20′ tracks of the 70’s, and I don’t understand why today it seems that a song can be only 3′ long. The photos by Aaron Hobson are a nice example of the possibilities offered by the panoramic format. Furthermore he always plays the character represented in the picture, thus his photos are an interesting mix of staged photography, with a clear and intense cinematographic look, and self-portraits.

Yiorgos Kordakis, a Greek photographer who was one of my favorite discoveries in Arco Madrid, contributes to Camera Obscura with an article about his series of large format Polaroid Global Summer. He explains why he is fascinated by sea and summer holidays, and why he wants to compare the differences between places and states. How people enjoy the summer in USA, in Romania and India? Yiorgos Kordakis also explain that he is not interested in shooting in a journalistic style, but he prefers to be distant from the subject. The results are his wonderful photographs with tiny and blurred people under the infinite sky, all different or all the same?

I always deeply loved Meleonn work. His surreal, melancholic and sometime grotesque staged photographs are always brilliant, nostalgic and touching. The colors are wonderful; they remind prints from the 50’s, old hand colored photos, or watercolor. It is really the work of a master.

For Camera Obscura Maleonn wrote a wonderful article about his Postman series, an article about memory and dream, his souvenirs of Shanghai and the story of a crazy dream that became reality.

Tim Carpenter sent me a long, comprehensive and excellent article which explains in detail the theoretical and practical motivations that underlie his vision of photography and his last project: a most serene republic.

Among other things, Tim Carpenter discusses in particular the idea of “Beauty” and “apparent ease of execution” derived from Robert Adams’s essays. A few weeks ago Maury Gortemiller sent me another long article, No Anthem/Speed Queens, that is also largely inspired by the same ideas by Robert Adams. I think it is particularly interesting to read the two articles side by side, notice how starting from very similar assumptions two different authors write two quite different articles, but especially how they end up with two very different photography style and body of work.

Yumiko Kinoshita is a Japanese photographer whose delicate images make me immediately think of brightness and lightness.

In the following essay she speaks about the importance of travel in her life and her photographic work. In addition to the description of a photographic session in Ireland, Yumiko Kinoshita writes some ideas about art that I completely share. As she does I love art and contemporary photography, but often I wish the importance of a conceptual statement to be resized, that contemporary photography could have a universal that people can share, regardless of all the conceptual ideas that we can associate with it.

The mannequins are not the reality of our society, but only a reflection of its surface.

Fashion, how to dress, image care, are all superficial aspects of Western consumer society, but still reflect its essence. The mannequins are a reflection of this reflection. The street is the surface of the city, a reflection of the life inside houses and buildings. Photography itself is a superficial representation of reality, only a reflection of what is deep under the surface.

The series Deep Surfaces Reflections is a visual exploration bouncing between these different layers of surfaces and reflections.

Da quando ho letto Does size matter? Yes it does, ho iniziato a dirmi che probabilmente valeva la pena rimodernare l’impaginazione di Camera Obscura. Adesso le miniature delle foto che accompagnano gli articoli sono molto più grandi e occupano tutta la larghezza del testo. Chiedo ai lettori: preferivate l’impaginazione precedente con le miniature piccole, oppure quella nuova con le immagini grandi?

Poco tempo fa su Magma (Il gruppo di discussione fondato da Roberto Vacis e Massimo Cristaldi), si è parlato di “Setting Sun – Writings by Japanese Photographers” di Ivan Vartanian, Akihiro Hatanaka e Yutaka Kambayashi, un libro sulla fotografia giapponese che sembra molto interessante. In particolare è stato scritto:

[...] Al giorno d’oggi il termine che indica l’atto di fare una foto è “satsu-ei”, 撮影, letteralmente “prendere/catturare un’ombra”. Immaginatevi le implicazioni filosofiche sulla fotografia di persone [...]

Questa frase mi ha subito stimolato a fare un commento linguistico, che ho prontamente spedito in risposta. Nei giorni successivi però ho continuato a pensarci, perché è un argomento che mi è caro. Riporto qui allora la mia risposta dopo averla sviluppata e approfondita.

Stein Café Salisburgo, di Gabriele Rigon

Scrivendo a proposito delle fotografie di Gabriele Rigon è inevitabile pernsare subito alle eleganti foto di glamour e di nudo, inno alla bellezza femminile allo stato puro, modelle stupende, così belle da sembrare quasi ultraterrene, sguardi ammalianti, forme perfette. Il tutto in un riuscitissimo bianco e nero, classico e raffinato. Nell’articolo che ha scritto per Camera Obscura però Gabriele Rigon ha preferito parlarci di qualcosa che mi sarei meno aspettato: la storia di un ritratto che gli è particolarmente caro.

Statistica delle tipologie di articoli pubblicati su Camera Obscura

L’altro ieri, nell’articolo Il triangolo dei blog artistici e le foto personali su Camera Obscura, ho accennato ad alcuni calcoli statistici che riguardano i contenuti di questo sito. In questo articolo, oltre a pubblicare i risultati dell’analisi, spiego anche come ottenere un grafico di questo tipo, in modo che tutti gli interessati possano rifare velocemente gli stessi calcoli sui contenuti del proprio sito.

Innanzitutto non ho rispettato le categorie scelte dagli autori di DLK collection, visto che non sono adatte a Camera Obscura. In particolare sono praticamente completamente assenti gli articoli “curate”, almeno per come sono intesi dagli autori originari; per questo motivo ho scelto invece tre categorie principali di articoli, più una quarta categoria a parte, di cui do la descrizione nel seguito.

I manichini non sono la realtà della nostra società, ma il riflesso unicamente della sua superficie.

La moda, il modo di vestirsi, la cura dell’immagine, sono tutti aspetti superficiali della società consumistica occidentale, ma ne riflettono comunque l’essenza. I manichini sono il riflesso di questo riflesso. La strada è la superficie delle città, riflesso della vita dentro le case e i palazzi. La fotografia è essa stessa rappresentazione superficiale della realtà.

La serie Deep Surfaces Reflections è una riflessione visiva sul rimbalzare fra questi diversi strati di superficie e riflessi.

Un po’ di tempo fa è stato pubblicato su DLK Collection un articolo, the art blog triangle, subito ripreso da Colberg in the photo blog triangle. In questi articoli gli autori classificano i blog dedicati all’arte e alla fotografia secondo i loro contenuti e mostrano le loro statistiche grazie ad un diagramma triangolare particolarmente espressivo.

Il blog di Zoriah e le donazioni su Internet

Zoriah è un fotoreporter di guerra di cui apprezzo particolarmente il lavoro e il suo blog è sicuramente uno dei miei preferiti.

Innanzitutto il suo sito si discosta dalla maggior parte dei blog che conosco dedicati alla fotografia. In generale i blog di critica sono poco più che un susseguirsi di link ai siti dei fotografi con pochissimo o nessun impianto critico di accompagnamento. La maggior parte dei fotoblog in cui sono incappato invece mostrano le foto della domenica di qualche fotoamatore non troppo avvertito.

Ritocco di Photoshop un po’ troppo evidente

Uno dei feed fotografici a cui sono abbonato è quello del Photo Journal del Wall Street Journal che ogni giorno pubblica delle belle foto di attualità ad alta risoluzione.

Fra quelle di oggi spicca una splendida foto di una tempesta di sabbia in Cina, il cui fondo marroncino perfettamente uniforme mi ha subito ricordato il fascino delle foto di Shōji Ueda. Cosa che mi piace particolarmente visto che di solito trovo che nelle foto sia presente un dettaglio aggiuntivo, mentre mi piacciono particolarmente le campiture uniformi.

Chung Kuo di Michelangelo Antonioni

Da alcuni giorni a Parigi fa caldo, ma il cielo rimane velato e grigio, la foschia a tratti si addensa in nuvoloni grigi e sembra minacci di piovere. Ho accettato con piacere allora quando ieri pomeriggio un amico mi ha proposto di andare a vedere al Champo un documentario sulla Cina di Michelangelo Antonioni: Chung Kuo, Cina.

Michelangelo Antonioni è l’autore di Blow-up uno dei miei film preferiti e la Cina è una delle mie grandi passioni attuali, quindi non potevo assolutamente lasciar passare un’occasione come questa.

The Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts bought some photos from Antarctica for its permanent collection.

The prints will be exposed in Kiyosato at the beginning of the next year during the young portfolio exhibition.

Two photos on italian National Geographic

During the National Geographic 2008 photo contest, two photographs from Antarctica were selected for publication on the italian National Geographic web site.

The selected shoots are sunset in Marambio and emperor penguin.

Citations from Giacomo Costa interview on his new book

Is about to be published a new big book that tells the whole story of the agglomerations by Giacomo Costa. The book, 260 pages, is published by Damiani editore.

In the book there will two important texts: one by Sir Norman Foster and the other by Luca Beatrice (the curator of the Italy pavilion at the next Venice Biennale). Beatrice in his own text mentions some extracts from the interview with Giacomo Costa I wrote for Camera Obscura.

New Camera Obscura layout

Several people during the last months asked me to modify the Camera Obscura page layout.

The current improvements includes: lighter page backround for easy reading, no tree photo header, bigger comments fonts, less evident meta and navigations controls, faster pages.

One of the picture of the series “palaces of the soul” has been selected during the competition prize of creative quality in professional photography, organized by Tau Visual.

The photo will be published on the catalogue of the prize.

The Rear View Mirror site just published a long article about the demons photo series. There is a theoretical introduction and discussion about conceptual photography, followed by a description of the series and an introduction to carbon transfer, the historical process used to print the portfolio.
