Capita talvolta che collegate il computer con un cavo DisplayPort ed il video non funziona, oppure il computer non si avvia o va in reboot continuo durante l'avvio, ecco, potrebbe essere un problema di cavo, non necessariamente di scarsa qualità, ma di sicuro non conforme alle specifiche Vesa.

macOS spotlight e dischi esterni

Spotlight in macOS è da sempre una delle funzionalità di sistema maggiormente apprezzate dagli utenti Apple, tuttavia qualche volta può dare qualche grattacapo, come ampiamente documentato qui:

Uno degli aspetti importanti che ho appreso nel tempo è che se non si ha intenzione di indicizzare un disco od una flash memory esterna è bene includerla subito dopo la formattazione, fra le unità da non indicizzare, attraverso preferenze di sistema --> spotlight --> privacy.

Per due unità usb flash drive utilizzate per alcuni backup ho impiegato più di un'ora e mezza per eseguire il primo backup a causa del fatto che avevo dimenticato di includerle nella lista di esclusione, quando sarebbero stati necessari meno di 20 minuti per 15=16 GB.

How to Run Your Favorite Windows Programs on OS X with Wineskin

A lot of software comes out for Mac and Windows these days, but there are always a few games or apps that don't make it OS X. Thankfully, you can easily port many Windows programs to OS X with a free app called Wineskin.

Wineskin is a free, open source utility that ports Windows programs to OS X so you can run them natively. It's built on Wine, an engine made for developers to help the quickly port software. There are a few apps that do this, like previously mentioned WineBottler or commercial software like CrossOver, but we've had the best luck work with Wineskin.

Due to the way Wineskin works, you won't be able to play the newest, most graphically intense games or power-hungry software. But you can port older software and lightweight games that don't hog a ton of resources (like many indie games). For more intense programs, you'll likely want to dual boot Windows with Apple's Boot Camp software instead.

Software will likely run better with Boot Camp, but Wineskin is great because you can port your favorite program and run it right in OS X—without ever purchasing Windows or rebooting your computer. With that out of the way, let's port some software. We've tested Wineskin with a number of apps, but we'll use Torchlight II as our sample since the Mac port seems to be dead in the water.

Step One: Download Wineskin and Update the Wrapper

Before you start, you'll need to download Wineskin. Once you've got it, go ahead and drag the file to your Applications folder and launch it. If you haven't already, download the Windows installer for your program of choice as well (in this case, the Torchlight II installer).

Instead of always updating the program itself, you'll update two different things in Wineskin: the wrapper and the engine. You'll get to the engine in the next step, but you can update the wrapper version right now by just clicking on the "Update" button. A wrapper is a set of registry files and a fake C: drive. You'll need to make a new wrapper for each application you want to port.

Step Two: Install a Wineskin Engine

Next up, it's time to install a Wineskin Engine. This is where things get a little weird. An engine includes a bunch of settings that can help you run software. The newest version is WS9 1.7.29. You can download and use older Wineskin engines, and certain engines are more compatible with certain titles than others. Just click the "+" button and choose the engine you want to use for your software port.

When I first tried to run Torchlight II, I went with the newest version of the Wineskin engine and couldn't get it to work. So, I did some digging to figure out why. Thankfully, Wine HQ features a huge list of software compatibility. After searching for Torchlight II, I found that it only works with WS9 1.7.16.

So, before you pick your engine, dig around on Wine HQ to see what other people are saying about compatibility. The newest version isn't always the best, so pick whichever engine seems to have the most compatibility with the software you want to port.

Step Three: Create a Wrapper

Now that you've picked your engine, it's time to create a wrapper:

Click the "Create New Blank Wrapper" button and name your app. Wineskin will take a few moments to build the wrapper

When it's finished, you'll get a note asking you to open the file in Finder. Click "Yes" to open up a window in Finder

Your wrapper is now created. Before you can install software, though, you'll need to mess around with some options.

Step Four: Configure Your Wrapper

Next, it's time to make some tweaks to your wrapper. Double-click the file in Finder (You might get an error message the first time, just double-click it again if you do) and you'll open up the Wrapper settings.

You'll see three options here: Install Software, Set Screen Options, and Advanced. Unless you know your software is fully compatible with no additional settings, hold off on installing for now. Instead, click "Advanced."

The Advanced setting has a ton of options, and most of them are pretty confusing. On your main Configuration tab, you can set up a special Windows EXE file to open, change the app icon, and rename the app if you want. The Tools tab has a ton of different options to change up configurations, install special Winetricks to make software more compatible, and rebuild your wrappers. WineTricks is a script that installs basic components into your wrapper. These are usually Microsoft DLL files and fonts that can fix problems with your ports. There are a billion WineTricks to choose from, but you'll find guides for installing them here. The Options tab has more options for your software that include changing how a three button mouse works, how the ALT key works, and more.

At a glance, all this stuff is pretty overwhelming and hard to really understand. Don't worry though. You have a couple of options for figuring out which settings you need to alter.

The first place you should check is Wine HQ. If you're trying to install popular software, you'll usually find a guide for doing so on Wine HQ. Take a look at the Team Fortress 2 page as an example. Each bit of software you install needs a custom set of Wrapper settings, so prepare to dig into these pages each time you want to make your own port.

Unfortunately, Torchlight II doesn't have a very good page on Wine HQ. So, I turned to Google and found IAM SysAdmin's post on getting it to work. Here's the gist of what I had to configure just to give you an idea of what you can expect with this step:

Click on the "Advanced" button.

Click on the "Tools" tab at the top then "Winetricks".

From the search field at the top type in "msxml3″ select it and run.

Follow the steps to download the file, manually, and put it in the folder and re-run.

Search for vcrun2010, select, and click on the Run button.

Follow the prompts.

Click on the "Close" button to close the Winetricks window.

Under the Tools tab, click on "Config Utility".

Click on the Graphics tab.

Select "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows".

Click Apply.

Click on the Libraries tab.

Under "New override for library" select dwrite then click the Add button.

Select the dwrite override then click the Edit button.

Select Disable and click OK.

Click Apply and OK.

Obviously, not all software requires this much configuration, but some of it will. Unless you're a Windows master who's great at reading error logs, I suggest hunting down working configuration settings before you try to install software.

Step Five: Install and Run Your Software

Now that all that configuration nonsense is out of the way, it's time to actually install your software.

Click the "Install Software" on the Wineskin Advanced page.

Click "Choose Setup Executable".

Select your setup or install EXE you downloaded earlier (In the case of Torchlight II it's the Torchlight2_FullInstall_v1.21.exe file).

Run through the setup just like you would if you were on a Windows computer.

When the installation process is complete, you should be able to run your software.

You'll find your ports in your Wineskin folder (User > Applications > Wineskin). Just double-click your newly created app to run it. If everything worked it'll load up and you can start using it as if it was a Mac app.

If you installed a game, you might want to pop into the Settings before you start and drop down any graphics settings. Since it's a hacked together port of software, things tend to be a bit slow, so you're better off starting with low graphics settings and moving up.

Step Six: How to Get Back to the Wrapper Configuration Page

If your software isn't working properly or you need to reconfigure some stuff, you can get back into the Wrapper settings without totally reinstalling everything:

Head to your Wineskin folder (User > Applications > Wineskin)

Right-click the app you want to edit and select "Show Package Contents"

Double-click the Wineskin.app file to reopen the Wineskin settings

That's it! You can reconfigure any settings or mess around with different options if you need to.

You'll likely have mixed luck with porting your software, but it's worth a try and 20 minutes of your time if you want to run Windows software on your Mac desktop, without having to install a virtual machine or partition your drive with Boot Camp..

Chrome Gets a Faster, More Stable 64-Bit Build for OS X

Mac: Chrome has finally been optimized for 64-bit Macs in version 39, which comes with lots of stability, performance, and security improvements.

Unlike the Windows version, Chrome is now only available in a 64-bit version on the Mac—so you shouldn't have to install anything new. Just update Chrome to version 39 (previously availbale in beta, now available in the stable channel) and you'll be able to reap the 64-bit benefits.

Note: A few people are having trouble auto-updating, so if you don't see an option to update to version 39, you can download it directly here.

Access OS X's Secret Terminal Hidden in the Login Screen

If you ever need to enter console commands without logging all the way into the desktop, Macworld has an old tip that shows you how to get access to the Terminal without going through the whole login process.

All you need to do is type >console into the username field of the login screen, and you'll get dumped into a Terminal screen. Here, you can run pretty much any commands you need without logging all the way into the desktop. You still need a login and password to do anything, but it's a nice way to get quick access to your computer.

Il sito di riferimento assoluto per la storia dell'informatica è sicuramente il Computer History Museum di Mountain View, California, sarebbe bello poterlo visitare, ma esplorarne il sito è sicuramente un esperienza interessante, si può cercare nel catalogo, ed uno dei "pezzi" che mi piace di più è la programma 101 di Olivetti, di cui si può leggere su wikipedia, ma soprattutto sul sito dedicato all'inventore, Pier Giorgio Perotto - Ne vale la pena, in quanto si tratta del primo computer desktop della storia.

Il mitico Andrea De Prisco ha digitalizzato una bella "pila" di numeri di MC-Microcomputer e li ha pubblicati sul sito www.mc-online.it ogni tanto sfoglio volentieri i vecchi numeri, non solo a video, ma vado all'armadio dove conservo la mia preziosa collezione e sfoglio un numero a caso della mia rivista di informatica preferita, quella dove ho imparato quasi tutto sui computer e non solo; non possiedo i primi numeri, il primo che ho comprato è il numero 49 del febbraio 1986 all'epoca avevo 14 anni, i numeri più vecchi, fino al 17 me li regalò un caro amico, che oggi non c'è più, come MC microcomputer, purtroppo, che da molti, è sempre stata considerata la rivista di informatica più autorevole, imparziale ed utile, del panorama editoriale italiano.

OS X ed il problema dei file Case Sensitive

Se c'è una cosa che odio di OS X ed il suo file system è il suo essere incoerentemente case insensitive per default; lasciando perdere le questioni filosofiche ed andando al nocciolo del problema, quello che va detto è che un volume HFS+ può anche essere formattato come Case Sensitive, è esplicitamente previsto dalle opzioni di utility disco, così molto tempo fa, avendo una mole di diversi gigabyte di roba proveniente da Linux, decisi di tenere questa "roba" su una partizione separata, appunto Case Sensitive.

Ora, per questioni di praticità, ho deciso di spostare gran parte di questi dati su un unico disco, quello di avvio, perché voglio un solo disco ed una sola partizione.

Il problema era quindi individuare i file che potevano impedire la copia completa e corretta dei dati, ovvero andare a cercare i vari file Pippo, PIPPO e pippo, decidendo sul da farsi prima della migrazione.

Lo script in python qui di seguito è quello che serve:

Windows quello che non deve mancare

Dopo una qualsiasi nuova installazione di Windows, c'è tutta una serie di programmi, che non devono mancare, a seconda dell'uso che si farà della macchina, ed a seconda dei gusti ovviamente...

Per prima cosa browser Internet e client e-mail, benché IE 9 sia buono, ed abbia stravolto in meglio, la pessima fama di IE, ultimamente lo affianco sempre a Chrome di Google, di conseguenza spesso si può fare a meno di un client e-mail completo, se si ha un account Google, altrimenti la scelta più sensata è Thunderbird.

Seguono Pidgin e Skype per l'instant messaging.

Subito dopo l'installazione di LibreOffice / OpenOffice (secondo preferenza) è d'obbligo!

Poi serve un buon gestore di file compressi, 7-Zip credo sia oggi la scelta più sensata.

Per la gestione dei PDF da anni non ho dubbi: PDF-XChange Viewer è secondo me il più equilibrato, veloce e compatibile, però se non avete nessuna esigenza di annotare e disegnare sui PDF la scelta giusta è sicuramente Sumatra PDF Viewer, free ed open source (GPLv3), eccelle per la velocità ed inoltre può visualizzare anche XPS, DjVu, CHM, CBZ e CBR; ecco un interessante articolo a riguardo su Lifehacker.

Poi ci sono una serie di programmi che non possono mancare nel PC del geek sistemista o programmatore anche amatoriale...

WinSCP
UltraVNC

Il primo è un editor e ne consiglio l'installazione anche all'appassionato non geek che usa il computer solo il minimo indispensabile, gli altri due, se non li conoscete ancora... beh... probabilmente non vi servono! ;)

Per la sincronizzazione di documenti fra computer di tutti i tipi ed anche dispositivi mobili, il must-have oggi è sicuramente Dropbox iscrivetevi dal mio link, così c'è un bel bonus di 250mb per entrambi.

Un pezzo che non deve mancare poi è VLC lettore multimediale dalle mille possibilità, spesso inesplorate, arriva dentro il vostro computer pronto all'uso con tutti i codec necessari, si può usare da semplice media player occasionale, ma il power user può farci cose che nessun umano a mai nemmeno immaginato ;) (semi-cit) compreso le conversioni.

Rimanendo nel multimediale, per la gestione delle foto non ho dubbi: Picasa è quello che serve, mentre per il ritocco di immagini e qualche lavoro di computer grafica, quello che non deve mancare in un PC Windows è Paint.NET se non lo conoscete ancora, installatelo subito, vi chiederete come avete fatto senza fino ad oggi! e anche se avete Photoshop e lo padroneggiate in lungo ed in largo, Paint.Net vi sorprenderà!

Infine i programmi per la sicurezza, c'è poco da fare, ho le mie teorie... quindi di solito mi limito ad installare il Microsoft Security Essential, poi fate voi... quello che non va dimenticato e che molti, moltissimi utenti trascurano in Windows, è di usare e/o far usare quotidianamente il PC con un account utente normale, non amministratore.

YajHFC: Hylafax client - Aggiornato

YajHFC - Yet another Java HylaFAX Client

Si, uno dei vari client per il fax server Hylafax, ma questo va davvero alla grande su tutti i sistemi, provato su Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 e Snow Leopard 10.6.x nonché su Linux OpenSuSE 11.x, Ubuntu e Windows XP è sempre piuttosto veloce per essere in Java.
Tradotto in dieci lingue, supporta la rubrica telefonica via SQL o LDAP.

La versione 0.5.0 rilasciata ad Aprile 2011 è disponibile in vari formati pronti: exe-setup per Windows, rpm e deb per Linux e di recente per Mac c'è la .app all in one già pronta, quindi non è più necessario lanciare il .jar.

Mi chiedo come mai, a distanza di anni, dobbiamo ancora rompersi le scatole con i problemi legati alla portabilità dei formati di file.
Leggo questo post del grande Paolo "di nome e di fatto" Attivissimo e rifletto sul fatto che non esiste, ad oggi, un sistema di scambio ed archiviazione di documenti, affidabile, sicuro e standard su ogni sistema.

Credo che chiunque si occupa di informatica, da professionista o appassionato, ed ha almeno trent'anni di età, si sia fatto un'idea del perché Apple non ne vuole sapere di Flash su iPhone; ma per quelli che non hanno le idee chiare o sono un po' più giovani potrebbe essere utile leggere questo post su roughlydrafted.com.

Niente di speciale, per carità, ma è sempre piacevole per me leggere pezzi di storia dell'informatica, l'articolo poi mi pare abbastanza oggettivo, senza che venga gettata merda su Adobe, che invece meriterebbe alla grande.

Hard disk rotto? ...nel freezer!

Nel caso vi ritrovaste a piedi con un hard disk che non vuole più saperne di lavorare, infilatelo in un paio di sacchetti ermetici e cacciatelo nel congelatore per una nottata, appena tirato fuori lo attaccate subito ed iniziate a provare di salvare il salvabile; eventualmente ripetere in più volte.

Sono anni che uso con successo questa tecnica descritta anche su lifehacker e 8 volte su 10 ha avuto successo.
I motivi che rendono questa tecnica efficace sono secondo me molto semplici: molte parti meccaniche dei moderni hard disk sono in alluminio o leghe similari, evidentemente quando inizia a funzionare male è perché qualche elemento va fuori tolleranza e quindi il freddo non fa altro che ripristinare temporaneamente la situazione; e lo stesso discorso vale per alcuni componenti elettronici del controller.

JuicePhone (Mac): gestione backup iPhone

Juice Phone è un interessante programma freeware (solo mac osx 10.5+) per gestire i backup dell'iPhone.

La caratteristica più interessante è quella di estrapolare dal backup i contenuti delle applicazioni altrimenti inaccessibili, come per esempio (ma non solo) i file audio di Tap Tap, o le note vocali di Jott.
