Guest Post: Not a Zombie Sunday

Hi. I’m Jen and I am not a blogger. I am an attachment and gentle parenting advocate. Gentle, not permissive. I believe in speaking to my children with respect, parenting without using fear as a tool, talking *to* my children and not *at* them, and admitting when I am wrong and apologizing. I believe in modeling the behavior I ask of my children. And I do this with a humble heart and an open mind secure in the knowledge that I do not have all of the answers and I am definitely going to screw up. I am not a blogger because I enjoy the rewards from conversation. I am always learning, always growing and my life is enriched by the people I talk to. Especially the parents at the place I call home on Facebook, Attached Parents at Work.

In January of 2012 I returned to work outside of the home after having our second son. If you have ever had to put your children in the care of someone else while you worked, you know what that day was like for me. My husband and I have always followed attachment parenting, or at least our version of it, so putting the most precious people in my life in someone else’s care was especially difficult for me. I have to work to help support my family, which often made me feel a little bit like an outsider in the AP community. I was lonely and desperate to meet other people in my shoes so Attached Parents at Work was born.

If it takes a village to raise a child, Attached Parents at Work is my village. Every single person there offers a unique perspective and an opportunity for me to see the world through their eyes. It’s my happy place where questions are asked, ideas are shared and conversation happens. One of our latest ideas is one I am extremely passionate about and feel extends beyond the attachment parenting community and into the home of every family in the 21st century.

One morning my 4 year old tried to ask me a question, but I made him wait until I finished typing on my phone to answer him. That got me thinking... How would that make me feel if my mom (or dad) put her phone before me? What did I look like constantly staring into it? He is my #1 priority, but do my habits convey that? No. Not as long as that phone is in my hand. I imagine I look like a zombie to him. So the Not a Zombie Sunday challenge was born. Between the devices we use at home and devices we use to stay connected to our jobs, our children have to compete with technology for our attention. TVs, radios, mp3 players, gaming systems, DVRs, smart phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, streaming media, social networking… They do not know a world without these things. Now think back to when you were growing up. The most I had to worry about was tearing my mom away from Days of Our Lives between 1:00-2:00pm on weekdays. I cannot imagine having to compete with her literally having access to the entire world at her fingertips. Children learn by example. Do as I say, not as I do doesn’t fly with them. They are going to become what they see. What does your child see? I asked myself that question and the answer broke my heart.

I don’t like to complain about something and then not do anything about it. So what do we do? We’re creatures of habit and these exciting windows to the world are arguably more addicting than nicotine for some. Baby steps… The Not a Zombie Sunday event challenges us to turn all of our devices off one Sunday a month. If you can’t do it on that Sunday, pick a different day. The point is to shut off anything that connects you to the outside world and only communicate with people right in front of you, namely your child(ren). Take a hike together, cook something new and make a gigantic mess in the kitchen, go to the zoo, have a water balloon fight, build a fort (my personal favorite), anything! But do it together and take note of how often you feel compelled to reach for the phone to check your texts or look for the iPad to check Facebook. What habits do you need to work on? How can you look less like a zombie and more like a role model for your little people?

It begins with the first Sunday of each month and hopefully becomes the new norm. There’s no reason to be constantly checking in. You will survive without knowing what Geoff told Facebook he is making for dinner tonight, I promise. We started this in July 2012 and I will admit it was a challenge for me at first. This Sunday, August 5th, is the next Not a Zombie Sunday event and I am sincerely looking forward to it. I hope you’ll join our village in this challenge.

Little Fancy Pants Cloth Diaper Review & Giveaway Ends 12/23/11

A little over a year ago I did a review of Little Fancy Pants cloth diapers, you can view it here. Leah recently contacted me and asked me to do another review because she has updated her pattern. She generously sent us a diaper to review. The first diaper we reviewed is still going strong after a year with no issues at all and the elastic is still going strong too.

The new pattern features a new soaker style that is 1 to 1 1/2 inches longer than the old soaker. Their are two soakers sewn together with hidden snaps so that no snaps touch the baby in the back. The top soaker is made of either organic bamboo velour or cotton velour on the top layer, cotton french terry in the middle layer, and the bottom layer is made of heavy bamboo fleece. The second soaker is made of two layers of cotton french terry with a bottom layer of heavy bamboo fleece. All the fabrics are pre-washed to minimize shrinking. If you have an older Little Fancy Pants diaper you can even order just the new soaker!

Little Fancy Pants are very well made and I love the way they fit Aniala. They are certainly my favorite fitted diaper. Depending on the shape and size of your baby the Little Fancy Pants diapers fit from approx. 9 to 35 lbs. Aniala is almost two and weighs 26 lbs and she still has plenty of growing room. Our Little Fancy Pants diapers are our "go to" diapers for overnight. We use a wool cover with them and it is bulletproof with no leaking issues at all.

Over the last year I have made several purchases from Little Fancy Pants and hanging out on their Facebook page I know that Leah has amazing customer service. I will always support and promote her for this (and because her diapers rock!) it is so hard to find good customer service. She is always so accommodating and is quick to answer questions and help her customers out.

The Dragon Knight collection is steel grey with dark green as accent color, perfect for strong and brave boys. I won tickets from Celebrity Attractions in OKC to see Cathy Rigby is PETER PAN. Brent and I shipped the kids to Grandma's and had a date night to go see the show. The show was absolutely fabulous with lots of humor in it. Brent even said it was one of his favorite shows he has seen and that is saying a lot coming from him. I agree with him, PETER PAN was excellent. I also think it is a very family friendly show. There were plenty of children in the audience and we saw a few of them dressed up as Tinker Bell and even a little boy with a Captain Hook costume on. I heard the children's laughter during the show and their laughs were contagious! When Peter Pan flies it is amazing. If you get a chance to check it out I highly recommend seeing it!

The Bandettes are fun labels for kids cups. We received a pack of blue, green, and orange for review. The Bandettes have a good size name plate on them so you have plenty of room to write your child's name, date, and any allergy information. You write on the Bandette with a ball point pen which can be rubbed off after use. The writing can also be made long term by boiling it or running it through the dishwasher.

Korben doesn't go to daycare on a daily basis but he has been left with sitters on occasion. One time I picked him up and another kid had the same sippy cup as Korben and I was grossed out that they had no idea whose cup was whose and I am sure they were drinking out of the wrong cups. With the Bandette on his cup he will not have that problem. Your child will know what cup is theirs even if they can't read. Korben loves the Bandettes he always asks me to put it on his cup even if we are just at home. I like them for Aniala as well who is just really starting to take more to a sippy cup. The Bandette is great for those cups with no handles as it easier for her to grip onto the cup with the Bandette on it.

Do I bake? Yes, I do….I actually LOVE to bake! Do You Bake generously sent us Chocolate & Chips Beer Bread and a Mediterranean Spice packet.

The Chocolate & Chips Beer Bread calls for beer or you can choose to use a carbonated beverage. I am not a beer drinker, so I opted to use Sprite. I also added crumbled up Hershey’s candy bar to the top of the bread.

I was a little nervous about how it would come out, because I am not the best cook/baker in the world, but DoYouBake’s recipe was absolutely foolproof and fabulous. The Chocolate & Chips Beer Bread called for 2 ingredients (and an additional for the topping if you preferred). I baked it for about 35 minutes.

It was soooo delicious! With the chocolate chips mixed with the rich cocoa, it makes the Chocolate & Chips Beer Bread so decadent. I ate mine warmed with strawberries, which made it yummier.
