Once upon a time, writing the ideal article from an SEO content perspective was a simple matter. Previously SEO was based almost entirely on keyphrases, and the best way to make sure that Google noticed your article and indexed it the way you wanted it to was to include the right number of keyphrases for the amount of content you had. Putting those keyphrases at the top of your page, and at the bottom, and making sure that you used headings with them in were other good tips, but other than that it was really that straightforward.

Then came the much maligned Google Penguin and Google Panda. These two big algorithm updates left us with a Google that was much smarter and much more ruthless, and that could sniff out attempts to stuff keywords from a mile away. Google always said that we should be writing for the visitors and not for the search engines, but now they really meant it – and attempts to do otherwise would result in poor results and potentially even de-indexing.

So in this new climate, how do you go about writing an article that Google will really like? Sure your content should be aimed primarily at your readers, but Google is a program that uses an algorithm to rank your site so there must still be boxes you can tick to increase your chances of ranking well. While those factors might be a little more subtle and a little less clear cut than they once were, they certainly do still exist and you certainly can still create content in a Google friendly way that also satisfies your visitors. Here we will look at the crucial things you need to consider.

Length of SEO Content

Size isn’t everything, but countless blogs have reported that their longer articles seem to perform better in a post Penguin world than their shorter ones, and just looking around you will tend to notice that the more successful sites and blogs feature more 700-800 word posts rather than 500 word ones. Not only does this increase the chances of Google finding long-tail keyphrases, but it also suggests that you are providing more in-depth information in your content, and nicely distances you from content farms which tend to have a 300-500 word limit in their terms.

Long content then makes sense from Google’s point of view, and for your readers it means you can provide more detailed information than the shorter content your rivals use, so aim for 700 words+ if you want to improve your SEO. Make sure that your article stays accessible though by breaking it up with headings and by including images.

Links

Creative Commons License

There was a time that no one would ever link to another site without including a no-follow tag for fear of wasting their ‘link juice’. Now though Google has stated that they appreciate links out to other high-authority sites that can provide more information relevant to your discussion. Not only does this help Google to index, but it also shows that you’ve researched and gives the reader the option of looking for more supplementary information to continue their reading and verify what you’ve said.

Being Unique

Google has always clamped down on stolen and duplicate content, but now it’s more important than ever to be unique. This means unique not only in terms of the wording you’re using, but also in terms of the information you’re conveying. Re-writing the same content with entirely new wording isn’t enough – Google wants to see you bring new points of views and new angles to popular topics so make sure you’re using ‘I’ a lot, and find a way to differentiate your writing from everyone else’s. This kind of writing is much more likely to get shared too.

Vocabulary

Creative Commons image source

‘Semantic search’ is a popular buzzword over at Google and it refers to the ability of search engines to understand the ‘meaning’ behind a search term rather than just looking for the exact sequence of words. This is part of the reason that keywords are out (really, they’re out – so stop stuffing them right now), but it also mean that Google will be looking for synonyms and related terms on your site. Use your big words then, and write around the topic in a natural way that indicates to Google – and your readers – what you’re writing about without cramming it down their throats.

As we’ve done before, I like to recap the previous year with a round up of my top posts. In a very unscientific manner, I looked over the social media marketing posts I’ve written and selected those which best highlight the trends and topics that were the top of mind in 2012.

In addition, I looked at comments, pageviews, reception on social media, and my own personal feelings to gather this list. Also, this year I’ve included some of my favorite guest posts, from sites such as Social Media Examiner, socialmouths, and Buffer Blog. We offer the same guest blogging opportunity right here on Face The Buzz.

Here are a few quick and easy tips to manage your social media marketing accounts more efficiently.

The standard email signature has become stale; it’s time to create your very own social email signature. A simple link to your website, blog, and social media channels is outdated and boring. WiseStamp brings email signatures to life.

Our emotional attraction is tied much more to having our audience, than our desire to connect socially.

Before you make the jump to social media marketing, you should define your business goals and objectives. In your objective, briefly describe what you intend to do as well as how you are going to assess your success towards achieving your goal at the end of the day. Breakdown whatever you intend to accomplish in the business into items that can be specifically completed and measured. After that, you can test and try various marketing initiatives to work on over time towards achieving this objective.

For Face The Buzz, Twitter has been the most successful platform to accomplish my business goals. Before you become invested in one social media channel or another, it’s helpful to understand the demographics of the users. Eric Welke, a social media marketing consultant, has put together the following infographic to beautifully display the demographics of Twitter users.

Face The Buzz Blog talks a lot about actions and steps you can take to improve your social media marketing. Having a strong social media presence is an important.

But, it’s even more important to keep your business goals as the primary focus of your energy. Unfortunately, social media can be a major time zapper; therefore, you need to approach the job with discipline and a mind for what works and what doesn’t.

Here are a few quick and easy tips to manage your social media marketing accounts more efficiently.

Set Time Limits

This tip sounds basic, but can very difficult to follow. Facebook and other social networks are designed with psychological principles in mind to keep you spending time on the site.

1 of every 5 minutes spent online is on social networks. <Tweet This>

While it may be tempting to spend extended periods of time socializing with customers on Facebook, that may not be the best use of your time. It is important that you approach your business social media use as you would any other job: Clock in and clock out and pre-set times.

You may event want to consider using software to limit and monitor your time spent on social media marketing activities. For example, RescueTime allows you to actually force yourself to be focused by blocking your access to Facebook, Twitter, and other distracting sites.

Once you have been using social media for a while, you will be able to determine how much time is reasonable to devote to managing your accounts. Make adjustments to your schedule as necessary.

Social Media Marketing Account Management Tools

There are a number of applications that allow you to consolidate, manage, and schedule your social media posts so that you don’t have to spend unnecessary time planning and responding throughout the day.

Also, by managing your accounts in one place, you can avoid distractions and respond to messages more efficiently. For a a small business owner who it’s very helpful to have all your accounts on one page.

Two of the most popular account management tools are Hootsuite and Tweetdeck, both of which offer both free and paid versions.

Hire Blog Writers

When it comes to social media marketing, content is king. The quality of your content can either strengthen your business brand, or break it down. Additionally, an active blog can serve as a great channel into your sales pipeline.

B2B companies with an active blog average 67% more leads per month < Tweet This >

If you find that you simply don’t have time to contribute high quality posts to your business blog and/or other social media outlets, then you can always hire a writer to create content for you.

While you may not be too eager to fork out money for something you feel you can do yourself, keep in mind that paying for content is a much better alternative to representing your business through social media with lackluster (or inadequate) content.

Link Your Blog and Social Media Marketing Accounts

If you run a business blog (and you should!), then it is likely you want to notify your Facebook friends and Twitter followers every time you put something new up. Link your social media accounts so that you don’t have to take the time to update each one every time you post something new on just one.

For example, you can use Ping.fm or dlvr.it – for free – to tie a host of social media accounts together and save yourself a huge chunk of valuable time. When you publish content, it will show up automatically across your various accounts.

Social Media Marketing Conclusion

Social media marketing is important to your business. However, your time is money, and you can’t afford to waste it. When it comes to social media, the idea is to work smarter, not harder. These tips should help you make the most of the time you spend managing your social media accounts.

Do you feel your currently spending too much time on your social media efforts? What other tips do you have to use social media more efficiently?

Email marketing has many benefits and you want to be in your potential customers’ email box. But, over-filled inboxes can make email newsletter marketing tricky and difficult, especially when you’re trying to increase click through and open rates.

Here are 5 key tips to increasing these rates and having a more successful email marketing campaign.

#1 Write Catchy Subject Lines

Scan the contents of your spam email folder and you’ll see many of the same messages: free, click here, 100% real…the list goes on and on. Email consumers are conditioned to ignore subject lines that fall into a spammy category.

Spend some time writing pithy and unique subject lines for your email newsletter. Use verbs and colorful adjectives, and make sure your subject line matches what they’ll see inside the email and on your website.

#2 Encourage Sharing

Email readers are busy and overwhelmed with information. When they are trying to clean out an email box with 1000 new messages, sharing your email newsletter might be the last thing on their minds. If you add social share buttons for Facebook, Twitter and other networks, your readers can click a single button and share with their friends and followers.

Don’t just hope that they take action. Ask them specifically to share your email newsletter with their friends if they enjoyed what they read. This conveys the image that you’re trusting them to share it, letting the content stand on its own.

#3 Tease The Content

Email newsletters are a fine balance between too much and not enough. Sending out an email with one paragraph of text and asking readers to click through to read the rest can seem like you’re trying too hard to get them to click. Too much and they won’t have to click.

Consider writing your email newsletter in summary format: create several articles on different topics and write a one-paragraph summary for each.

Creatively tease the content by giving away just enough to make them want more. Don’t’ withhold the ending, but leave the specifics for your website or clickthrough page.

#4 Make Your Call-to-Action Clear

You might pride yourself on your witty and insightful writing and want that to be the “star” of your email newsletter, but sending it out without a call to action is a marketing 101 no-no. Recipients appreciate good content and will seek out more, so make your call to action crystal clear before you send it out.

Create a button or graphic that asks users to click, subscribe or share. Cut out all the clutter, including extra sidebars, links, bios or ads. Make your call-to-action scan-able – as they read through the email, make sure they stop and take notice of the task you’re asking them to do.

#5 Optimize for Mobile

The latest research has showed that mobile access to email and website is a way of life.

70 million in US access email through mobile devices and 43% check their email more than four times per day. < Tweet This >

HTML emails are fun and easy on the eyes, but may not come across well on the small screen of a mobile device. Additionally, a photo-heavy template can make downloading slow, and your email might end up in the trash can before it even loads completely.

Optimizing your email newsletter for mobile is a simple, effective way to increase readership and click through. Go easy on the large photos and create a two-column template to keep all the information on one screen so users won’t have to scroll to read it in its entirety.

Email Marketing Tips Conclusion

These five, simple tips should help to increase your email marketing open and click through rates. What questions do you have about email marketing?

Pinterest is the new star in social media. Having grown at a rate faster than Facebook could ever have dreamed of (it was the fastest site to date to break the 10 million unique visitor mark) Pinterest’s growth only slowed in March of this year – yet the pinboard-style social network shows no sign of disappearing just yet.

However, despite its adoption by a number of big brands such as Etsy and HGTV, Pinterest has not necessarily been embraced by all and is clearly still trying to find its positioning in the social media universe.

In this post, we’ll take a look at those early adopters of Pinterest marketing and find out what it is they’ve done right. Also, we’ll show you tips to avoid the potential for things to go very, very wrong.

Pinterest Marketing Done Right

Whole Foods

Whole Foods Market, the supermarket chain specializing in organic and natural foods, was one of the first big brands to realize the potential Pinterest had when it came to marketing.

So why has it done so well?

Whole Foods has utilized Pinterest as a way of reaffirming its brand ethos and interacting with its customers in an entirely new manner.

Whole Foods created a number of different pinboards to reflect the varied interests and beliefs of the company. As well as pinboards for food, recycling and green living, it created boards for less obvious (though no doubt relevant) topics including holidays, “cool” kitchens and food art.

However, Whole Foods has not just demonstrated an interest in its own brand and pinboards; it’s incredibly active in the Pinterest community, following others and repinning things of interest. In your own pinterest marketing, remember to not focus only on your own content, but to also actively participate in the community.

Scholastic

As the world’s largest publisher of children’s books and an embracer of all things cool and colorful, it’s no wonder that Scholastic would come to see the potential the Pinterest community could hold.

Why has it done so well?

Scholastic followed a similar premise to Whole Foods by fully embracing the whole ethos of how social media should be used for marketing.

Instead of sticking with the easiest option of creating pinboards relating purely to the publications and financial interests of the company, Scholastic decided to create a number of pinboards that, while related to the company and its products, should draw in a more diverse crowd than only those who have a vested interest in the company’s products themselves.

Some of its pinboards include:

Libraries We Love

Beautiful Bookshops

Wise Words

Vintage Scholastic

Michaels

Michaels is a chain of stores specializing in crafts and arts supplies – the perfect candidate for a Pinterest marketing campaign if ever there was one.

What’s so good about it?

Michaels created a wide range of pinboards designed to gather the interests of a diverse array of Pinterest users, including boards for knitting, baking and making crafts from recycled materials.

However, Michaels hasn’t forgotten that if you want to be really successful in social media, you need to demonstrate a genuine interest in the words and actions of your following. With this in mind, Michaels created a pinboard purely for the purpose of sharing its followers’ projects. This kind of interaction is exactly what companies should be doing if they really want to excel at social media and ensure their actions online transcend to increased profits offline.

The Dark Side to Pinning

As Pinterest is still a relative baby in the social media world, it’s inevitable that it would still have a few holes to work out.

The primary concern with Pinterest relates to the security of the site and the ease at which it could be abused by less honorable characters. Earlier this year Shadab Siddiqui uncovered a number of vulnerabilities in the site that could allow company accounts to be hacked – the consequences of which remain to be seen.

Copyright Infringement

Another issue which has led to a backlash against Pinterest is copyright infreingement. Although the site does have rules in place regarding the use of copyrighted material, the whole ethos of Pinterest contradicts these rules, and it’s a wonder how successful the site would be if people were only to use images to which they had explicit permission to use.

Image courtesy of Los Amigos Del Fuego

The fact is that there is still an incredible amount of gray space surrounding Pinterest and just whom the responsibility lies with should something prohibited get pinned.

With this in mind, any company wishing to use Pinterest for marketing should play it safe and ensure it’s only sharing or repinning images to which it has the rights to do so.

Pinterest Marketing Conclusion
