Meet Bonnie and Josh who reconnected on Facebook. Bonnie shares her Facebook Love Story with us.

Josh and I met about thirty years ago at an advertising agency in New York.  Working in different departments meant that our professional paths didn’t cross much, but we often rode the Fifth Avenue bus home together, as our apartments were in the same neighborhood.

We really enjoyed being “bus buddies” each evening, sharing the events of the day and laughing through it all. Eventually, I left my job, got married and moved to Connecticut, where I raised two children.  Josh got married and stayed in the city, and we completely lost touch.

About 3 years ago, my son decided it was time for me to have a Facebook page.  I’d gotten divorced, had very little in the way of a social life, and he thought I’d have fun looking up old friends.  After balking a bit at first (Mothers don’t do Facebook, I thought), I began to ask myself who I’d like to look up.  I thought of Josh, but my Facebook search for him turned up no results.  A strong intuition told me to try again, so six weeks later I did… and there he was.

I sent him a message asking if he remembered me and he responded within hours, so excited to hear from me.  Within three days we were talking on the phone for hours at a time, and within weeks we made a date for dinner (Josh’s birthday).  He showed up with carrot cake and a dozen bagels (he owns Eisenberg’s; a landmark restaurant in NYC) and I was hooked.  We were engaged the following New Year’s Eve, and were married last August at a friend’s home in Connecticut.

The wedding cake was a delicious Fifth Avenue bus. Now here we are again, sharing our lives and laughing through it all.  In my wildest dreams I’d never have imagined that Facebook would change my life, but it did.  It reconnected me with Josh, and I consider it a miracle.

Meet Alexa and Devin who found love on Facebook through the “People You Should Know” feature.

Here’s Alexa’s story in her words.

For the longest time it felt like, I was always looking for love but could never find it. I tried online dating off and on for about two years and felt like there was no hope for me. I knew so many of my friends who had success with Internet dating, but the more I tried, the worse the dates seemed to be.

My friends all told me countless times, you’ll find someone when you least expect it, or told me that when I’m not looking is when he will come into my life. Being the impatient person I was though, I didn’t want to hear this. One day I received a friend request from someone I didn’t know named Devin. We had one mutual friend in common, so I thought I might have met him somewhere and just didn’t remember.

I looked at his pictures and couldn’t recognize his face, but I thought he was cute so I thought, what the heck?? I added him. He was the first person in my six years of being on Facebook that I added without knowing in real life. We didn’t talk or anything for a few days after that, but then he commented on one of my pictures, saying “hey there ” I found his comment cute and decided to message him.

I asked if I knew him from somewhere and he said that we didn’t, but I showed up in the “People You May Know” feature and he thought I was cute so he added me. We started talking on and off a little bit, then a little more. Finally we decided to hang out and have been inseparable since.

Thank you to Facebook for the ability to upload pictures of ourselves. I’ve finally found the great man that I’ve been looking for, or I guess I should say that he found me

In addition, the Match.com “Singles in America” survey reports that 48% of single women and 38% of single men research their dates on Facebook before a first date. In addition, 38% of singles have canceled a date due to something they found online while doing their digital due diligence.

Facebook has also played a large part in breakups according to the Match survey, with 55% of the men saying they broke up due to a date’s pictures, 42% due to a wall post on someone else’s wall, and 28% who have broken up due to their status update.

So before you start poking someone new, it’s time to clean up your Facebook profile.

Here are 7 tips you must know to fall in love on Facebook.

1. Don’t Hide your Relationship Status.  If you’re single, let the world know. Our Facebook Love Story couple Diva Taunia and Jake reconnected when his sister noticed her relationship status changed to “Divorced” and ran to tell her brother.
2. Check their Relationship Status.  Before you respond to that Facebook chat, look at his or her “About” page to make sure their relationship status is listed as “Single” and take note to see if they’re “In a Relationship.”
   
3. Do your digital housekeeping.  Your break-up with your ex may be old news to your closest friends, but not to a potential suitor. Take the time to untag, remove, and discard your digital history, so you can appear as someone who is ready for a new relationship, and aren’t hanging onto the past.
4. Glance Through the “People You May Know” Feature.  Our featured Facebook Love Story couple Patience and Sam are now happily married as a result of Sam seeing Patience’s photo as a suggestion and had recognized her from high school.
5. Keep your Chat Window Open.  Flirting on Facebook is the best way to enjoy a digital courtship.  Make sure your privacy settings enable this feature. Go ahead and be brave and say hello to someone you might have a digital crush on.
6. Don’t Kiss-and-Post.  You may be excited about your date from last night, but you don’t really know if he has another one scheduled for tonight. If you must post, take a photo of your desert, but don’t mention your date or tag him in the photo. You’re far from “Facebook Official.”
7. Don’t Complain about Your Date.  So he didn’t resemble his profile photos or she had ten extra pounds. This happens often, so complaining on your Facebook page won’t make you more dateable. It will actually turn-off someone who might have been ready to ask you out on a date. Nobody wants to date a “Debbie Downer.”

Meet Meca and Anthony who found love when they weren’t looking for it on Facebook.

Both Meca and Anthony shared a lot of mutual friends on Facebook. The two even attended offline events at the same time twice, but never actually met in-real-life (IRL).

For about four years, Meca and Anthony were digital friends on Facebook, but they never really had much contact with each other.

Since Meca was divorced, she spent time on online dating sites looking for someone special to date. Last spring she began blogging about her experiences with online dating and posted them on her Facebook page.  At the same time, she was super-busy with her start-up business.

Anthony enjoyed reading her blogposts and would send her messages in private emails on Facebook. He wanted to know why a girl like her was single. Their romance developed on Facebook chat privately and finally they decided to exchange phone numbers.

Meca was very hesitant at first, especially as Anthony was an artist. As an accessory designer, Meca didn’t think she wanted to date an abstract painter. “I don’t date artists,” she proclaimed. Soon they discovered that they were indeed soul mates and have been together for seven blissful months.

The two remain friends on Facebook, where Meca is very social and posts random daily updates about her personal life and business. Anthony posts about twice a week. They’ve decided to save the mushy stuff for the privacy of their inbox.

While Lauren and Daniel met in person for the first time offline at an Art Walk in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, they didn’t really talk or get to know each other at that time. A few days later, the two became friends on Facebook,  since they both had several friends in common.

For several months, Daniel would visit Lauren’s Facebook profile and “like” several of her status updates. It wasn’t until Lauren asked an open question to her friends about social media for work purposes,  that Daniel responded to her status update.

Daniel lent a helping digital hand and commented frequently to Lauren’s work questions, until finally after many back-and-forth messages,  Lauren agreed to meet Daniel for coffee.

Their coffee date was memorable for the two of them. Coffee quickly turned into drinks and dinner.

The two have been attached at the hip ever since and always say thank you to Facebook for making them a happy couple!

It all started twenty years ago when Taunia met Jake in college. The two dated for 2.5 years and then went their separate ways to pursue their career aspirations.

“We always knew we were each other’s ‘true love,’’ said Taunia.

Twenty years and a lot of life lessons went by. Taunia had gastric bypass surgery in 2008. She got married, established her musical career, and developed an online following, particularly on Facebook.

Tania reconnected with one of Jake’s sisters on Facebook. When Jake’s sister noticed Tania’s relationship status as “Divorced,” she told her brother, who then contacted Taunia to reconnect. The two have been inseparable ever since.

This past Christmas, Jake surprised Tania with the best gift ever. He took her to Paris for a romantic holiday trip. Jake proposed to Tania in front of the Eifel Tower. The two will get married in the summer of 2013 and could not be happier.

3. Select a gift within your budget and then select an eCard to go along with the gift. You’ll have the option to share that you sent a gift to your friend or loved on on Facebook or keep it just to yourself.

4. Put in your credit card information and you’re done.

5. Facebook will notify the recipient that they’ve received a gift from you. They can then provide their address anonymously and be surprised when it arrives.

How did these two who lived in Indiana and England find each other on the world’s largest social network?

It all started in the fall of  2007, when Trevor was going to a University in Indiana.

At the same time, Sophie was living in Leeds, England running her own business. Neither was interested in developing a long-distance relationship.

The two happened to join a “Star Wars” fan group on Facebook, where they entertained themselves collaborating on fan fiction. Sophie and Trevor became fast friends as they got to know each other over the period of just three months.

In the summer of 2008, Sophie and Trevor decided to finally meet in person. They decided that Berlin would be the city for their first date. Later that year, they both realized that they were falling in love.

Over the next several years they commuted between Indiana and England as their relationship flourished. Both Sophie and Trevor acknowledge that Facebook played a huge part in keeping them connected, during the time of their long-distance relationship

In 2012, the two finally got married in New York City . They just celebrated their first anniversary and are madly in love and finally living on the same continent, in each other’s arms in the Big Apple.

1. Claim Your Single “Single” Status. If you’re looking for a date or a relationship, why is your relationship status blank? Hiding won’t help your love life. Let your friends and their friends know you’re available. Perhaps that secret crush will notice your relationship status change, and the conversation can get started.

2. Check their relationship status before you start flirting. If your friend’s About page shows that they are  “Single,” chances are the coast is clear, but it doesn’t mean they’re not in a relationship. For this reason, you need to take it slow and just become friendly. Engage in Facebook chat if you’re both online at the same time.  If you see their relationship status says, “In a Relationship” or “Married,” or if you notice several photos of them in the arms of the same person, save your flirting skills for someone else who might be open to the possibilities.

3. Say Thank You Publicly.  If you become friends with someone new, or reconnect with someone from a previous job or from school, don’t just accept the friends request and ignore them. Take the extra step to thank them on their timeline. This will develop a digital rapport and get the conversation started. If you’re uncomfortable posting for all of his or her friends to see, send a private message by clicking the message button under his or her cover photo to keep the conversation between the two of you. In 1984, Patience Smith knew Sam Bloom as the wildly popular senior who always found new ways to be in the spotlight. Many in their class would call him the class clown. By contrast, Patience was a wallflower. She had a crush on Sam but said he was “out of her league.” They never dated and barely acknowledged each other in the halls. During a formal dance, after her date had ditched her, Patience was shocked when Sam asked her to dance and pulled her into a random picture. They still have that picture.

Twenty-six years went by. Sam had married/divorced and lived in Israel, teaching college and high school French. Patience had gone into publishing in New York and had serial-dated for two decades. She was 41-yeats-old and was completely over the New York dating scene which she jokingly refers to as “buffet dating.”

Both were at a crossroads in their lives and the timing was perfect. In August 2009, in the “Suggested Friends” section on Facebook, Sam noticed “the little redhead” as one of his options and “friended” Patience immediately. For Patience, it was a no-brainer to be in contact with such a popular person from high school and she further attracted him by “liking” his morose status updates. He finally picked up the phone and called her. Their first phone conversation lasted for over two hours and their bond over the phone, on Skype and on Facebook then led to a visit four-months after they reconnected.

One Facebook friendship and three months of Skype dates later convinced them that this was “something.” He asked if he could visit and possibly “marry and father her children.” Patience said all of her girlfriends thought she was crazy, but she knew there was a connection there. In fact, they had a deal. He would come visit and would leave if they thought it was weird. Fortunately, that was not the case.

On December 17, 2009, Sam uprooted himself to go west and saw Patience for the first time in twenty-six years. He ended up staying in New York. On their first visit to his father’s house in Miami, Sam dug out the original picture of them, which he’d kept all these years. They were married on January 16, 2011 and live in New York.
