In early May, the Chicago Public Library, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and Facing History and Ourselves launched the shared initiative ‘Now Is The Time.' The goal of the initiative is to create citywide dialogue about questions of social activism and civic responsibility, particularly among youth.

The initiative will include a series of events and activities for Chicago-area residents, including Facing History’s traveling exhibition, Choosing to Participate, which will be on display at the Chicago Public Library Harold Washington Center, August 27-November 11, 2012.

“Facing history and Ourselves is thrilled to bring an exhibit to Chicago that examines the impact of racism and injustice and the consequences of choices we make every day to help build inclusive or exclusive communities,” said Bonnie Oberman, Chicago director of Facing History. “We know that the privilege of partnering with the Chicago Public Library and the Steppenwolf Theatre means that thousands of Chicagoans will have access to a citywide conversation around issues critically important to all of us.”

Read the article “Chicago Public Library, Steppenwolf Theatre Announce ‘Now Is The Time,’” by Sean O’Connor on Examiner.com.

Learn more about the Choosing to Participate exhibit.

Learn more about our work in Chicago.

Facing History and Ourselves and DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, last week announced a first-of-its-kind, multiyear collaboration that will incorporate Facing History’s acclaimed resources, materials, and classroom strategies on civic engagement throughout programs for working and aspiring teachers in DePaul’s College of Education. The initiative has the potential to impact thousands of students in the coming years.

“Facing History is proud and honored to establish this collaboration with DePaul University,” Margot Stern Strom, president and executive director of Facing History and Ourselves, said.

“As these teachers work with their students, the numbers of elementary and high school students educated in critical thinking around issues of intolerance and social justice will grow exponentially,” Dean of the College of Education at DePaul Paul Zionts said. “This collaboration will have a huge impact in our communities.”

The DePaul University and Facing History and Ourselves collaboration is generously supported by The Donna and Jack Greenberg Charitable Trust.

Read about the announcement on DePaul’s website.

Learn more about our work in Chicago.

The local Chicago ABC news station featured “Now is the Time,” a new initiative by Facing History and Ourselves, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and the Chicago Public Library, on television this weekend. “Now is the Time” kicks off in the 2012-2013 school year and aims to inspire citywide conversation about stopping youth violence and intolerance.

As part of the initiative, the participating institutions will host various events around Chicago, including Facing History’s Choosing to Participate exhibition, on display at the Chicago Public Library, Harold Washington Library Center beginning August 27 through November 11, 2012. Click here to learn more.

In an interview with ABC7, Steppenwolf’s Hallie Gordon, Artistic and Education Director for Steppenwolf for Young Adults spoke about “Now is the Time,” as well as the upcoming Choosing to Participate exhibit.

“That’s about four personal stories about being upstanders in your community, meaning really giving to your community, making the right choices,” Gordon said. “And that really includes all of Chicagoans and what is their upstander story.”

Watch the video on ABC7 News.

Learn more about our work in Chicago.

Collaboration Connects Historical Perspectives on Intolerance with Current Issues

DePaul University and the international nonprofit organization Facing History and Ourselves today announced a first-of-its-kind, multiyear collaboration that will incorporate Facing History’s acclaimed resources, materials and classroom strategies on civic engagement throughout programs for working and aspiring teachers in DePaul’s College of Education. The cooperative has the potential to impact thousands of students in coming years.

The collaboration, the first between Facing History and a university college of education, is made possible through a generous gift from DePaul Trustee Jack Greenberg and his wife, Donna. Former CEO and chairman of McDonald’s, Jack Greenberg is currently chair of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, the city-state agency that runs McCormick Place and Navy Pier.

DePaul will employ Facing History’s professional development methodology and resources that bring historical perspective to current dialogue in schools about racism, anti-Semitism, intolerance and bullying. Once the collaboration is fully in place, virtually every teacher-preparation graduate from DePaul’s College of Education will have experience in the Facing History approach. Graduates will have ongoing access to Facing History resources, workshops and seminars as they move through their professional careers in education.

“Facing History and Ourselves has developed a very powerful and effective pedagogy and professional development programs for teachers that address some of the most critically urgent issues of our time,” said the Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., president of DePaul. “This agreement strengthens and extends the College of Education’s programming in a manner consistent with the university’s historical commitment to social justice.”

Margot Stern Strom, founder and executive director of Facing History and Ourselves, agreed. “When new teachers train in the teaching of these difficult issues during their own educational years, they are so much more likely to feel confident and comfortable engaging their classrooms in this critical study throughout their careers. Facing History is proud and honored to establish this collaboration with DePaul University.”

Facing History educational activities link critical historical events such as the years leading up to and during the Holocaust and the civil rights movement to everyday issues and choices people face in their own lives, providing opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to recognize the importance of civic participation and to learn from the courage and resilience of others.

DePaul faculty members and Facing History experts will introduce College of Education students, alumni and current educators in the field to the library of Facing History materials available in print and online. Along with the materials presented in courses and seminars, DePaul will purchase several sets of Facing History resource publications to serve as a readily accessible library. The resource volumes include works such as Facing History and Ourselves: Holocaust and Human Behavior, Choosing to Participate, Crimes Against Humanity and Civilization: The Genocide of the Armenians, Fundamental Freedoms: Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Stories of Identity: Religion, Migration, and Belonging in a Changing World.

Within seven years, every teacher-preparation candidate at DePaul will have received instruction in the Facing History methodology as part of their education. Participants will have full access to the Facing History website and the online toolbox during their pre-service experiences and into their professional teaching careers.

The collaboration will formally commence with a June teachers’ workshop titled “Teaching About Race, Difference and Membership: Little Rock 1957.” The workshop, to be held at DePaul, will use the strife-filled 1957 desegregation of Little Rock Central High as a case study to explore ways to teach about race, difference and membership.

The DePaul University and Facing History and Ourselves collaboration is generously supported by The Donna and Jack Greenberg Charitable Trust. Greenberg is a DePaul alumnus and trustee, and the couple specifically directed their seven-figure gift toward programs in the College of Education that will equip teachers to deal with issues of social justice in their schools.

“DePaul University has a long history of active inclusion, compassion and opportunity,” said Greenberg. “This mission is as important as it ever was, and Donna and I could think of no place better to advance this kind of work into the larger community than through DePaul and its College of Education. We are proud that DePaul is leading by example in this critical area. As the largest Catholic university in the country, it adds its moral authority to this important work.”

Paul Zionts, dean of the College of Education, said the Greenbergs’ gift and DePaul’s collaboration with Facing History and Ourselves will have far-reaching effects in the schools and communities they serve.

“By the time the collaboration is fully implemented, more than 2,000 DePaul education graduates will be carrying forth these approaches in classrooms across the city and around the country,” Zionts said. “As these teachers work with their students, the numbers of elementary and high school students educated in critical thinking around issues of intolerance and social justice will grow exponentially. This collaboration will have a huge impact in our communities.”

About Facing History and Ourselves
Facing History and Ourselves is an international educational and professional development organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice and anti-Semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. By studying the historical development of the Holocaust and other examples of genocide and mass violence, students make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives. Facing History has provided in-depth seminars for more than 29,000 educators, and its active teacher network reaches nearly two million students annually. More than 3,000 COE graduates are employed as teachers, principals and administrators in the Chicago area.

About DePaul
With more than 25,000 students, DePaul University is the largest Catholic university in the United States and the largest private, nonprofit university in the Midwest.

Facing History and Ourselves alumna Nikki Jarvis was a featured speaker at last night's 21st Annual Chicago Benefit Dinner and Choosing to Participate Kick-Off. Currently a freshman at Loyola University, Jarvis told the audiences about her experiences as a Facing History student at Deerfield High School and how those experiences have inspired her day-to-day choices and long-term goals.

My Facing History experience started in my junior year at Deerfield High School when I walked into an integrated U.S. History and English course taught by Niki Antonakis and Dan Cohen. When you put those two teachers together with the Facing History curriculum, WOW, you have a life changing experience and that is exactly what happened for me.

My name is Nikki Jarvis and I grew up in a suburban, privileged, homogeneous community. Before this class, I was ignorant and unaware. I thought little beyond the stereotypes I grew up with and trusted everything that was taught to me. I never would have challenged authority.

Throughout that year, we used Facing History’s curriculum and resources to study the Holocaust which helped us look at a society where government authority was used to marginalize, discriminate, and sometimes to eliminate people. Then we moved to the Civil Rights movement using other Facing History resources putting an emphasis on “bystanders” and “upstanders.” Our teachers pushed us to pay attention to issues of race and ethnicity and to question and challenge authority when we saw a wrong.

That year I also joined Facing History’s student leadership group and for the first time interacted with students who were very different from me in color and life experience. This team taught me to use my voice and get involved.

In the past few years I’ve learned that every person can have power and a role in the world, regardless of age. Its given me the courage to research race and racism in my own community. Last year I produced a community conversation on the history of racism in Deerfield which began with the rejection of a 1959 housing integration plan. It was modeled on the Facing History Community Conversations and got lots of people talking about white privilege, prompting shifts in ideas, values, and behavior.

As a freshman at Loyola this year, I got involved with the NAACP on campus. I organized a town hall meeting to get our students and recruiters in a discussion with our President, Provost, and administrators about how to recruit more students of color to this urban campus where their numbers have been dropping each year. I plan on continuing this mobilization.

It all began with my Facing History classroom. The impact of my teachers along with Facing History had a profound effect on most all the students in that class.

I use the lessons from Facing History and Ourselves every day. As I continue my education, I hope to become a teacher. Instead of accepting simple, robotic responses, I want to facilitate exploration outside my students’ usual boundaries. Facing History will be the inspiration and driving force behind each lesson I teach. I hope to inspire my students as Facing History has inspired me. Thank you, Facing History.

Eighth grade student Jacques A. from Stockton School in Chicago spoke to a diverse audience at last night's 21st Annual Chicago Benefit Dinner and Choosing to Pariticpate Kick-Off. Jacques spoke of his experience researching challenges that the LGBTQ community face every day and what he and his fellow classmates decided to do about it.

My name is Jacques A. and I am in 8th grade at Stockton School on the Northwest side of Chicago. I moved to America from Togo, Africa, when I was nine, unable to speak English. Now I am able to pursue my passion for art and next year I will be attending Chicago Academy for the Arts as a Visual Arts Major.

At our school we are encouraged to do community service, treat each other with respect and always help people in need. By far, the project we chose this year that moved me the most was the one I led about the problems people in the LGBTQ community face every day. LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning.

My fellow classmates and I researched a lot. One day after school, we went to interview people at Truman College to find out how those students felt about homosexuals. We also watched a movie about bullying and found out that lots of young people are being bullied because of their sexual orientation. We were shocked to find out how many had committed suicide. We wrote and acted in a Public Service Announcement that included some of the interviews and addressed some of the issues faced by this community.

We wanted to do something about it at school so last month we organized an assembly and showed our PSA. Our English teacher, Mr. Baloff, helped us invite some community leaders as well as members of the LGBTQ community to talk about their experiences. When they spoke, some of them were in tears and so were we.

Our student body committed to change our own behavior and said the following pledge:

We join hands as a symbol of Stockton's solidarity against hatred, against bigotry, against discrimination and against bullying. We stand together to pledge to treat everyone with compassion and respect and to accept others exactly as they are. We will do this for everyone regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

Since that assembly, we haven’t heard the word “gay” used so carelessly in our school. Our friends are much more concerned about this issue and much more open-minded.

I have learned that you have to give everyone the chance to be unique in their own way. Your sexuality is only a small part of you and doesn’t define who you are or what you do.

My Facing History teacher, Ms. Zajac has a quote in her room, “Your mind is like a parachute. It works best when its open.” I hope we have helped open minds. Thank you.

The following remarks were given by co-founder and President of Loop Capital Markets Albert R. Grace, Jr., the co-chair of Facing History and Ourselves' 21st Annual Benefit Dinner and Choosing to Participate Kick-Off. He spoke about the importance of the Facing History's upcoming Choosing to Participate initiative and how the community will benefit from such an initiative.

Good evening and welcome to the Annual Benefit Dinner for Facing History and Ourselves and the official launch of Facing History’s Choosing to Participate Exhibition coming in the Fall of 2012.

My name is Albert R. Grace Jr., and I am the co-founder and President of Loop Capital Markets. It is my pleasure to be here tonight to represent my business partner and friend for 40 years, and this event’s co-chair, Mr. Jim Reynolds.

This evening, Chicago marks 21 years of Facing History and Ourselves. During that time, more than 3,000 educators have used Facing History resources in 725 public, religious, and independent schools in Chicago. 2 million students every year are in classrooms with Facing History teachers across the globe.

Every teacher receives the training, tools, and ongoing support necessary to bring complex lessons of history to middle school and high school students. Facing History helps teachers develop the informed, compassionate, active, global citizens so critical to a robust democracy. On a personal note, Facing History is an intersection of important influences on my life. Long ago, I was a history major and my mother was a teacher in Chicago Public Schools.

This evening we are kicking off an exciting exhibition called Choosing to Participate which will be at the Harold Washington Library for three months this Fall.

The Choosing to Participate exhibition extends the Facing History classroom. It brings the lessons of history to a broader audience through interactive media and remarkable stories. These stories engage our thinking about issues such as inclusion and exclusion, how to respond to hate groups, and the impact of fear on our actions. We explore choices that individuals made in moments of crisis for their communities and explore the consequences of those decisions. Later tonight we will look at one of these stories together.

One of the installations in Choosing to Participate focuses on the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, 55 years ago. The Little Rock Nine, high school students who wanted only to improve their education, stood up to the racism and bigotry that was a part of our country’s educational system at the time.

Their tough choices made history that continues to unfold. And maybe it was their choices that in some ways made it possible, just three months ago, for Loop Capital Markets to open a new office, in Little Rock.

And so for many reasons I am honored to be among the special guests for this evening’s kick-off celebration of Choosing to Participate.

In my role as Facing History’s newest advocate, I call upon every person in this room to join us as we wrestle with tough questions tonight, and make the choice to support and participate in the singular opportunities offered by the Choosing to Participate exhibition next Fall. Thank you.

And now I’d like to introduce you to Marc Skvirsky, Vice President & Chief Program Officer at Facing History and Ourselves.

The exhibit examines the impact and history of bigotry and injustice, and inspires conversation about the choices we can make every day to foster civic engagement, tolerance, and mutual understanding in our communities. In addition to five installations telling first-person accounts about people and communities whose stories illustrate courage, initiative, and compassion, there will be two local components: Upstanders: Portraits of Courage, featuring photographs and narratives celebrating 12 unsung heroes making a difference in Chicago; and pARTicipation: Young Artists Speak Up, a display of original artwork from Chicagoland students in grades 7-12 that illustrates the importance of choices we make in our daily lives and the value of choosing to participate.

"Choosing to Participate is a catalyst for conversation about civic participation in our community, our nation, and across the globe,” said Margot Stern Strom, Facing History’s founder and executive director. “The exhibit reflects our mission to help students think deeply about what democracy means and what it asks each of us. Our young people are among the best moral philosophers, and by engaging in Choosing to Participate, they learn how to confront the moral decisions they face each day and develop the skills to build and be part of an inclusive community.”

The Honorary Chair for Choosing to Participate in Chicago is Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Co-chairs for the initiative are Greg Case, CEO of Aon, and Jim Reynolds, CEO of Loop Capital. The national Honorary Advisory Committee for the exhibit includes filmmaker Steven Spielberg, Congressman John Lewis, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and other internationally recognized leaders who have made significant contributions to building and strengthening civic life. For a full list of the honorary advisory committee, please visit choosingtoparticipate.org. The Walmart Foundation is the national sponsor of Choosing to Participate’s current multicity tour. Aon is the lead local sponsor of Choosing to Participate in Chicago.

“The exhibit and related events showcase courageous choices made by communities and individuals to foster compassion and inclusion. Stories are shared in a way that encourage youth to think critically about the choices in their own lives and to make their voices heard at a time when understanding and tolerance are increasingly critical,” said Bonnie Oberman, the Chicago director of Facing History. “The exhibit will be a featured part of the new city-wide Now Is The Time initiative, and through this partnership with the Chicago Public Library and Steppenwolf Theatre Company, more students, educators, and community members will have the opportunity to hear that that message.”

Since the Chicago office of Facing History opened in 1990, more than 3,000 local educators have participated in Facing History's professional development programs. These teachers annually reach over 300,000 middle and high school students in over 725 public, religious, and independent schools in the Chicago metropolitan area. Training provided by Facing History enables students to deepen their knowledge of history, their understanding of the origins of hatred and violence, and their ability to relate history to their own lives. A strong alliance with Chicago Public Schools and growing partnerships with suburban, religious, and charter schools enable a critical and significant impact to be made.

The exhibit’s visit to Chicago is expected to attract more than 30,000 students, teachers, and community members. Choosing to Participate opened in Boston in 1998 and has since traveled to New York, Memphis, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. To date, more than 500,000 people have attended the exhibit and related events.

Exhibition Highlights

Central to the exhibit are five installations telling stories in the first-person about people and communities that have experienced racism and injustice, and how courage, initiative, and compassion are necessary to protect democracy. The stories invite people of all ages and backgrounds to connect these stories to the choices they face in their own lives, to think critically about issues of race and prejudice, and to understand that their decisions and actions matter to themselves, to their community, and to the world.

Crisis in Little Rock demonstrates the drama and tension surrounding the “Little Rock Nine” who integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. A personal narrative by Elizabeth Eckford, one of the nine students, describes how people in the community responded to the integration.

Not in Our Town introduces a community effort to combat hate crimes in Billings, Montana, in 1993. The community took an active stance against violence and vowed "not in our town." Video documentation, written accounts, and photographs examine what can happen when an entire community bands together to combat hate.

Little Things are Big uncovers how race issues in the 1950s influenced the way Americans saw one another and themselves. Writer Jesus Colón, a Puerto Rican and African-American man, recounts his story of deciding whether to aid a white woman, struggling with her three children and a large suitcase, late at night on a New York City subway.

Everyone Has a Story depicts the challenges faced by a young Cambodian refugee as he struggled to enter his first school and build a new life in the U.S. in the 1980s.

Give Bigotry No Sanction examines George Washington’s landmark letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island of 1790 to raise issues of religious freedom and intolerance.

Visit choosingtoparticipate.org to learn about local sponsors, view a full event calendar, and preview resources that include a resource book available in English and Spanish.
