This resource, which is currently still in its pilot stage, connects our core resource book, Facing History and Ourselves: Holocaust and Human Behavior, with writing prompts that align with the expectations of the Common Core State Standards. This resource includes specific writing prompts and teaching strategies that ask students to use evidence as they craft a formal argumentative essay. In addition, the resource features effective writing strategies for general use in the social studies or English classroom.

As students read and reflect from our core resource book, they investigate the forces that undermined democracy in Germany, betrayed a generation of young people, and ultimately led to the Holocaust. In doing so, students discover that many of those forces threaten our own society today. The book then helps students discover how their decisions can make a positive difference in their community, nation and the world.

This resource aligns our Civil Rights Historical Investigations units with the Common Core State Standards through an argumentative writing assessment.

The three Civil Rights Historical Investigations units require students to "do" history—to gather evidence from primary documents, use that evidence to make claims about the past, and then apply what they learn to their own lives today. This supplement includes specific writing prompts and teaching strategies that ask students to use this evidence to craft a formal argumentative essay about the civil rights movement. In addition, the resource features effective writing strategies for the social studies classroom.

Developed by WGBH in collaboration with Facing History and Ourselves, this study guide accompanies the 2010 PBS Masterpiece Classic series The Diary of Anne Frank, a new film version based on fresh information about Anne Frank’s family, life, and death. Drawing extensively on Anne's own words, including long-deleted passages of her diary, and featuring vividly-recreated scenes filmed in Amsterdam, the series aims to adapt this much-taught classic for a new generation, setting out to show young viewers that Anne was a “thoroughly modern teenager—similar in many ways to today”—who lived in anything-but-normal times.

The guide is aimed at middle school and high school teachers. Together the film and guide can serve as a key element within a larger unit on World War II, Holocaust studies, or coming-of-age literature in social studies, history, English, and writing courses. It can also be used as a resource within units on diversity, tolerance, and human rights.

Stitching Truth: Women's Protest Art in Pinochet's Chile (Spanish translation) is the story of the sisters, wives, and mothers who made up the women's protest movement in Chile during Pinochet's dictatorship (1973-1990). It is an incredible story of courage and resistance. Facing what would seem like insurmountable odds, the women challenged silence and terror imposed by Pinochet, his military, and his secret police.

Intended to make the material appropriate for classroom use, this case study includes Connections questions for student reflection, suggested further reading, and primary source documents.

Facing History and Ourselves has developed Teaching "The Reckoning" to help classrooms explore essential questions about judgment by studying the creation of the International Criminal Court. Ever since the Nuremberg Trials, individuals around the world have imagined how an international judicial body could be used to prevent genocide, crimes against humanity, and other violations of civil and human rights. In 2002, more than 100 nations made this vision a reality with the establishment of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. To help classrooms explore some of the successes and challenges this new court has faced, Facing History has partnered with Skylight Pictures, the producers of the film The Reckoning: The Battle for the International Criminal Court to create three short video modules—each one focusing on an important dilemma raised by the court related to issues of sovereignty, impunity, and peace. These resources help students confront the complexity of justice and judgment in a global context, and make connections to their own lives, by raising questions such as: Are wrongdoers less likely to commit crimes when they think they might be caught and punished? What is justice? Does it look the same in all communities? How can individuals and nations work together to create a safer, more just community?

Thousands of African Americans were driven from their communities by violent mobs in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In fear for their lives, the victims left behind their land, homes and businesses, never to return. The documentary Banished: American Ethnic Cleansings by Marco Williams focuses on these events in three towns in the United States and places this history in the context of present-day race relations. Teaching "Banished," a web-exclusive study guide allows educators to share Williams’ work in the classroom. It examines the efforts of current residents, descendants, journalist and politicians to address this history, and explores issues of memory, justice, and reconciliation. The guide takes the experiences of those in the film and delves deeper by asking critical Facing History and Ourselves’ questions: How does a community reconcile past wrongs and move toward justice? How can addressing the past restore the dignity of victims, perpetrators and bystanders? What should happen as a result of this history in the featured towns and in our own communities?

Look What A Wonder, Walter Robinson's gospel musical, tells the story of a black family in South Carolina between 1821 and 1822. Denmark Vesey is a free black man in a community of approximately 3,000 free blacks and 60,000 slaves.

Look What A Wonder, Walter Robinson's gospel musical, tells the story of a black family in South Carolina between 1821 and 1822.

Denmark Vesey is a free black man in a community of approximately 3,000 free blacks and 60,000 slaves. He is a carpenter by trade. When he was an adolescent, Denmark was a slave owned by a Captain Joseph Vesey. Denmark was granted the "honor" of serving as the first mate on Captain Vesey's slave ship. The captain required Denmark to do terrible things, such as whipping a rebellious slave to death. As an adult, Denmark is haunted by his own past actions. His rage against slavery drives him to try to free all black slaves in America. In doing so, he hopes to win justice for blacks and at the same time redeem himself for his past on the slave ship.

When Captain Vesey later retired to Charleston, he granted Denmark his freedom. Rose and their two children are still enslaved when the musical begins. They belong to a white master named Colonel Moore.

Using Gospel music to drive the plot, this story raises universal questions through an exploration of a particular history. It is a story that explores many of the themes central to a Facing History course: identity and voice, courage and resilience, freedom and justice, and decision-making and choice.

Elements of Time serves as a companion to the Facing History video collection of Holocaust testimonies. The companion manual describes the context for and content of video testimonies dealing with a wide range of themes pertinent to the study of the Holocaust and human behavior.

Throughout the book are cross-references to readings and topics in Holocaust and Human Behavior, as well as to other Facing History publications and special information packets and audiovisual materials available at the Facing History Library.

Elements of Time does not attempt to be a comprehensive survey of survivors' experiences in the Holocaust years. Rather, it suggests the types of themes that most engage students' interest and generate worthwhile classroom discussion. It also provides general guidelines for viewing the ever-growing number of video testimonies in cities throughout the United States.
