The rampant overdevelopment of agriculture, housing and industry increase the demands for fresh water well beyond the finite supply, resulting in the desertification of the earth.

Wars of the future will be fought over water, not oil, as this liquid source of all life enters the global marketplace and political arena. Past civilizations have collapsed from poor water management. Can the human race survive?

Brazil and Music begins in the days of slavery, when an estimated 4 million Africans were forcibly moved to Brazil, and traces the development of samba from the poor black areas of Salvador and Rio, where it was initially banned, to its fusion with European styles and its move to the mainstream. After 500 years of history the Brazilian music developed some unique and original styles like choro, sertanejo, brega, forró, frevo, samba, maracatu, bossa nova, MPB, brazilian rock, axé and others.

A new breed of revolutionary stands poised along our information highways waging war on logos and symbols. They’re “Culture Jammers” and their mission is to artfully reclaim our mental environment and cause a bit of brand damage to corporate mindshare. Hard hitting, controversial, wacky and engaging, this documentary film captures the drama of jammers in action and asks: Is Culture Jamming civil disobedience? Senseless vandalism? The only form of self-defense left?
From flip-flops to footballs, water bottles to wastebaskets, plastic is everywhere in our world. The documentary confronts this daunting ubiquity head on. Sensibly alarmed and endlessly curious about plastic, from time zone to time zone in search of answers. What does it do to our oceans? Observation of maritime researchers tracking, counting and scooping a shocking amount of plastic from the most isolated regions of the sea. Where does our plastic waste go? It’s off to India, just one of North America’s offload destinations, where we see appalling overflow and some innovative solutions. What are some alternatives? We visit a manufacturer of “bioplastic,” a more organic, more degradable option. So it goes, a scrupulous, adventurous trip through the history, economics, ecology and science of this infinitely problematic substance. This is no shrill rallying cry; The film maker keeps a level head through all the depressing environmental statistics and the endless pile-up of packed landfills. Not out to inflame but to inform, and on that level Addicted to Plastic is most impressive.

Jacques Verges is the kind of lawyer that people love to hate. Over several decades, he`s made a career of defending some of the most despised figures of our time – from anti-colonial bombers in Algeria, to left-wing extremists like Carlos the Jackyl, to right-wing dictators like Slobodan Milosevic. At the height of his career he disappeared for an eight year period that no investigator has ever been able to account for. Then he reappeared – refusing to disclose where he had been – and continued where he left off, taking on even more controversial clients.

The film interweaves the stories of four obsessive men, each driven to create eccentric worlds of their dreams, all involving animals: Dave Hoover, a lion tamer who idolizes the late Clyde Beatty, and who shares his theories on the mind of wild animals; George Mendonça, a topiary gardener who has devoted a lifetime to painstakingly shaping bears and giraffes out of hedges and trees; Ray Mendez, who is fascinated with hairless mole-rats, tiny buck-toothed mammals who behave like insects; and Rodney Brooks, an M.I.T. scientist who has designed complex, autonomous robots that can crawl like bugs without specific instructions from a human controller. As the film proceeds, thematic connections between the four protagonists begin to emerge. The lion tamer and the topiary gardener look back at ways of life which are slowly disappearing; the mole-rat specialist and the robot scientist eye the future, envisioning creatures that may someday replace the human race. Hilarious, sad, absurd, eerie and beautiful, “Fast, Cheap & Out of Control” is a film like no other. Starting as a darkly funny contemplation of the Sisyphus-like nature of human striving, it ultimately becomes a profoundly moving meditation on the very nature of existence.
