Pura Vida!

In Costa Rica, they go around saying "Pura Vida!" This is the good life!
Pure Living!

For one week (July 13-23) my 6 year old daughter and I will be living the
good life in Costa Rica as I take her on the trip of a lifetime. We will be
snorkeling in the Caribbean, hiking in the jungle with monkeys and sloths
and running a zip line admiring the gorgeous greenery that Costa Rica has to
offer.

We are so excited!

One of the items I'll be taking is our new bug spray, Pester Me Not! We
carry it everywhere we go. I even have a bottle in the car for unexpected
hikes.

Faerie Made will be closed during this week with the exception of the
Asheville City Market venues which will be staffed by my husband, Zac. Come
by and say hello to him. He's been in the background here doing all the
heavy lifting and weighing out the oils and butters we use in our soaps and
body care ...

However, our website will not be closed to orders, but shipping will cease
on July 9th and resume on Thursday July 23rd. So go ahead and order ... and
as a thank you for your patience, the shipping rate will be a flat $4.00
from today until then and free shipping on all orders over $40.00.

The news is all gloom and doom. Says that the unemployment rate is 10% so everyone focuses on that instead of the 90% who are employed. Of the 90% who are employed a fair precentage of them are scared to spend money because of the gloom and doom news.

I refuse to participate in this recession. I am still living my life, selling my soaps online, to stores, at my retail venues and then sharing my wealth created and purchasing things.

What do others think about this?

I am pleased to show off Faerie Made's newest creation ... Pester Me Not body oil spray!

This spray has bug hatin' catnip, lemon eucalyptus essential oils ... combined with other bug hatin' essential oils: lavender (yes!), lemongrass, and cedarwood. I've got this in a base of fractionated coconut oil which is lovely in that it's light and absorbs nicely along with a bit of soybean oil, a vegetable oil that pests detests.

We've been using it in the garden and my husband, a mosquito god has reported not being bitten to pieces.

Faerie Made Soaps & Day Camp!

It's summer time!

Schools out and that means my daughter is home for the summer. I don't put her in a summer program for the most part ... if something comes along that is cool, then okay we'll do that, but usually she's chillin' with her mama which I love.

I've always done that. Back in my past life when my sons were little, I was a college student and would take summers off and hang with them. When they were older and I had a "real job", I worked in a mom friendly agency (at a domestic violence shelter) and I'd take them with me, plus I adjusted my work schedule during the summer to where I was home fairly early in the afternoon so we could be together and I had a large circle of friends with kids so we'd "farm them out" from one family to another ... when it was my turn I would have from 5-10 kids at a time at my place for several days at a time! Then we'd have a potluck and kids would go back to parents with at least one or 5 other children in tow ...

My sons are grown and gone, and the kids I helped raise those many years ago many have kids of their own, so now I am on phase two!

My daughter has always been a huge part of my business. She is my Faerie Muse :) So how do I run a growing business with her? My days shift in summer. Much more flexible. Instead of busting it from 8:30-3 Monday through Friday & 8-1 on Saturdays, I work in spurts. This morning I am up early answering emails, making my list for the day. I'll work until she is awake and ready to eat, then I'll spend time with her. Fortunately she is easily entertained, so she plays around the house and in the yard while I work and then I'll take a break and we'll do something together. She puts on the best plays which she rehearses while I am doing something, then I stop, watch and back to work.

She goes with me on deliveries, which then leads into a stop at our favorite coffee shop for a snack. She vends with me at the markets, helping out by climbing trees, playing with all the kids of other vendors and shoppers and eating her weight in goat cheese and sour cherries!

My assistant last year brought her kids and it really was good for the 4 kids to play together while mom worked.

We also have a neighbor who has a child her age and they play together really well. Often the two will be seen running back and forth between the two houses (the other parent is a work at home parent). My sister is nearby so sometimes my daughter gets kidnapped & goes to her house (where my parents live .. it's a win win). I've joined a gym that has a really cool on-site child care center where she loves to go play so we'll go there and she can play and I can let off some steam ... did I mention the lake we can go hike into and swim? We plan on going there at least once a week too this summer. Oh and mark your calendar for one week in July where we will be gone to Costa Rica. Yes, I am taking my daughter there for a week with some friends.

My schedule is a bit scattered and it can be difficult at time, but I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Name the Soap Contest!

I present to you: our summer soap. Every season I come out with a soap that reflects the times. I started this last year and it has been a lot of fun. This year, for the summer soap I decided to play around with coriander, an essential oil that has a green note.

The blend I came up with starts with coriander to which is added citrus notes of fresh lemon and may chang, floral geranium, sultry ylang ylang with a touch of cedarwood and west haitian sandalwood.

NO name.

This soap needs a name.

So I decided to have a little contest. Name Faerie Made's Summer Soap!

This contest starts today, Wednesday May 27th and will run through Sunday June 6th.

Winner of this contest will receive goodies from Faerie Made including a bar of this soap.

Goodbye to two soaps

I made the tough decision last year to discontinue two of my slower moving soaps, Grassy Mint and Basil Lime. Two weeks ago, I sold my last Grassy Mint and today the last 4 bars of Basil Lime were sold.

The Grassy Mint soap was one of my first soap blends I ever made.

Good bye my friends ... you were fun.

Now to work on a few new blends this summer for fun!

I have been so busy here working on the garden. We finally got all 6 of our new veggie beds ready for planting and then I've been busting a groove after working getting plants in the ground, seeds sown, weeding (one thing about the rain, it's made pulling weeds easier), and generally trying to make the yard look better. My front beds (herbs and flowers) are doing well. I have a front bed that is in its second year ... It has a way to go, but I'm pleased to see it coming along. My roses are starting to really bloom. I love them.
I'm looking for two climbers to put on the side of my little building when my son completes the painting. I hope when he gets back from vacation he can get it finished.

Our lawn mower broke, so my husband had to weed eat down our jungle. It's in the shop so hopefully it will be back in a few days.

Our vegetable beds are coming along ... we got potatoes, onions, cabbage, broccoli, pac choi, peppers, tomatoes, basil, beans, beets, carrots, beans & parsnips in so far. I've got more to go and hope to get a lot more done over the weekend.

now back to production work! Got summer soap on the shelves and restocking other soaps...

Rain Rain Rain

I have 200 plants (not including the ones i want to start from seed) to get into the ground.
Here in Asheville we are geting lots and lots of rain.

I have plants, I have beds ready to go. As a matter of fact, my husband is working on two more, but it won't stop raining so he can complete them!

Rain is good, I am so glad we are getting it because of the drought for so long ... but I just need a few hours to get the plants into the ground.

Also the thunder isn't helping matters much as my female dog is on me shaking from fear. She's an 18 pound Cairn terrier who thinks she can take on the world, but thunder freaks her out.

So send me a stop the rain long enough to get plants in the ground mojo, please.

Herb Fest!

This weekend May 1-3 is the annual Spring Herb Festival located at the Farmer's Market on Brevard Road here in Asheville NC. I LOVE this show. I've attended for years and I have vended since for years. I will be there again. Come by and say hello! Mention that you read this on my blog and receive a free goodie with your purchase! The festival runs from 9-5 on Friday and Saturday and from 10-3 on Sunday.

I will be there with lots of soap, lots of muscle rub (perfect for sore muscles after gardening!) and the rest of my body care and perfumes.

I also will be seeing friends from last year and picking up lots of gorgeous herbs and flowers for my beds and I have a list a mile long of plants I need (want). Heirloom tomatoes, peppers of many varieties, eggplant, basil, lemongrass, dill, and on and on ... I also would love to pick up a few more blueberry bushes. Oh I am so excited.

Also our Tailgate Markets are in full swing again. Please visit them and help support the local economy. If you aren't local to Asheville NC, then consider finding a tailgate or farmer's market near you. How much fresher can you get?

It's Market Season Again!

It's time for our markets here in Asheville and I AM THRILLED!

First off WATM (West Asheville Tailgate Market) which is every Wednesday from 3:30 - 6:30 in the grassy area behind the West End Bakery on Haywood Road. This market is in the 7th season (and I've been there since the second year when my daughter was just a little attached baby who insisted I hold her WHILE I set up.... heh!)

I think this year is going to be the best. We have amazing signage and banners and have shifted our set up to allow more vendors. WATM is a very walkable market and ideal for West Asheville residents. Stroll through and pick up fresh veggies, plant starters, meats, goat cheeses, Honey and eggs, AND don't forget the natural handmade soaps! It's not just a market, it's a community event!
This market will run through mid October.

If you can't come out to our Wednesday Market ... then I hope to see you Saturday at the Asheville City Market located at 161 S Charlotte Street in the parking lot of the Public Works Building. Running from 8-1 this is a larger market and promises to continue to just get better. The City Market is in its 2nd year and I am so thrilled to have been one of the first vendors.

I have been reported for email abuse ... ugh. I am not sure why. I have a newsletter list, I send out newsletters once or twice a month (sometimes I"ll extend a sale or I'll send out an update on happenings that I want to share) so I'll do more.

I am not sure why that has happened! But two AOL email customers have reported it as abuse. I did some research and while I have an opt out button for unsubscribing, it seems that folks most often just click the "this is junk" that is provided by their isp. Upon reflection I have done the same thing not knowing that I was reporting it as spam. I just didn't want to receive the emails anymore.

Now I feel bad.

Researching has shown that sloppy html is one reason that emails can go to spam folders ... taking word documents and copying into html is one way. ugh. i've been doing that.

So lots of research coming up for me to find out how to best send newsletters. I"m going to make sure that my disclaimer is loud and clear:

Gosh, I have gotten slacker about blogging. I used to try to blog at least once a week and to blog more than just what I have on sale or something business related.

I admit that part of my slowing down has to do with several things:
1) I am not on my laptop as much as usual with my desire to not be as online .. I use my Blackberry more but I don't do more than read, respond to email and to twitter ...
2) My blogging lately has been on Sparkpeople an online community where one can track calories, exercise and get support and information on lifestyle change ... it's working! I am down 20 # and exercising regularly and feeling 10,000 times better.
3) And feeling a general malaise I get during winter. I have had an okay winter, no real down times, no real depression, but Sundays ... my blogging day, I just want to read. Read read. Stay in bed and read.

However, I think I need to add blogging to my calender. Schedule time to blog, then update website and etc. I am doing well with my newsletter ... omg, it's almost April! Got to get on newsletter.

Guess I need to put my book aside and get to work.

Demeter's Reunion Limited Edition Soap

It's time to share our Spring soap:

According to Greek Mythology, Demeter (Mother Earth), had a daughter who she
adored. Her daughter was a curious girl and ate a forbidden fruit that
belonged to the god of the underworld. As a result, she had to go live with
the god of the underworld for 3 months a year. During that time, Demeter
would mourn and the world would go into hibernation with winter snows and
cold winds.

At the end of the three months, Demeter's daughter was returned and her
mother rejoiced. The flowers poke up out of the ground, trees begin to bud,
the grass greening, the snows melt. Spring returned.

This soap is our vision of Mother Earth's reunion with her child. Bergamot,
petigrain, litsea and orange are enhanced with a bit of herbal lavender and
rosemary and toned down with clove and benzoin in our own "fae" (eau) de
cologne.

This is our limited edition soap for spring.

Also, we have our Spring Perfume, Persephone, which is Faerie Made's play on the
classic eau de cologne which I call a "Fae de Cologne" (similar to the
spring soap, but kicked up a notch) ... Bergamot, neroli, orange, folded
lemon and petitgrain with herbal rosemary & lavender and just a tad of
