Documents You Need to Complete the FAFSA.
You will need to provide information about your income and assets on the FAFSA form so that your financial need can be determined.

The following documents are generally required to complete your FAFSA:

• Social Security Number
• Driver’s license
• W-2 and other forms to verify income earned
• Income tax return
• Parent’s income tax return
• Records showing unearned income (child support, veteran’s benefits, etc.)
• Bank statements
• Business and investment records

You should keep these records with a copy of your completed FAFSA form in case you are selected for verification.

Getting you Federal PIN number is the first step to applying for  financial aid including loans. Andrea Lieberman explains the process.

You need to go to the U.S. Department of Education website and apply for your PIN number at www.pin.ed.gov. The PIN number allows you to sign your FAFSA electronically. It also allows you to make any corrections via the internet once you receive your SAR (Student Aid Report). Both student and parent need to apply separately for their own PIN. You can apply for your PIN number at anytime, even before January 1^st. That will be your PIN number for your entire time in college.

Financial Aid Tips:

Everyone should apply for financial aid. Don’t assume you won’t be eligible. File the FAFSA or CSS PROFILE. There is both need based and non-need based financial aid. Low to middle income families usually qualify for need based grants and loans. Higher income families may always borrow non-need based loans up to the cost of attendance even if they do not qualify for need based loans and grants.

Meet all deadlines. File your FAFSA as early as possible. Be sure to check with the financial aid office of the schools you’re applying to for their deadline for financial aid to qualify for the most aid possible. Financial aid is given out on a first come first served basis.

Comply with all requests made by the financial aid office. The financial aid office may request additional paperwork including tax returns and schedules, verification forms or other documents.

Make your college aware of special circumstances. If your parent has lost their job since completing the FAFSA or Profile, inform schools about your situation. Most have standard policies that allow the use of projected income, which could increase the amount of financial assistance.

Keep copies of everything for your records.
