Twice. The pulled groin in his kicking leg forced the Redskins to use three other punters over a five-game span. Smith was nearly placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Then came the biggest moment yet. On Sunday, during a wacky fake field goal sequence, Smith uncorked a 35-yard touchdown pass to Mike Sellers to turn the tide in a 27-17 win over Denver that snapped a four-game losing streak.

"Generally, the only time we generate news is when we don't punt well, and the news is that we've lost our job," Smith said yesterday. "If you have to sit out and cause your team that sort of roster problem with an injury, you'd like to come back and be worth your weight."

Smith was chosen as the NFC special teams player of the week. He is the first specialist in NFL history to run and pass for a touchdown in the same season.

Seems he was worth all the trouble he caused.

"It makes it difficult to put a guy down, to release a guy, to bring a guy back, to have two punters on the roster at the same time, all of that logistical thing," coach Jim Zorn said. "But the thing that we came out with was very positive results, with the punters that we used and then Hunter being able to make it back. That couldn't have been a better story."

The fake field goal looked silly watching it live, but it was a stroke of well-designed genius from special teams coach Danny Smith. Even though the Redskins had advertised the fake and even sent a man in motion, the Broncos didn't notice Sellers slip out to the left while Smith and everyone else rolled right.

Smith was recruited as a quarterback by Notre Dame and was the emergency third-string quarterback for many of his 10 years with the Indianapolis Colts, so he was able to throw a downfield spiral with no problem.

source: http://www.hometownannapolis.com/news/spo/2009/11/20-15/Redskins-Smith-having-interesting-year-for-punter.html

But now the Skins are facing another lawsuit renewing charges that the team-name is racist. Enterprising journalists and bloggers are already brainstorming alternatives:

1. Washington Nationals: "Sharing a nickname [in this case with the local baseball franchise] didn't hurt the New York football Giants back when there was the New York baseball Giants, did it?" (The Washington Times)

2. Washington 90: "Like 'Hawaii Five-0.' Say it: Washington 9-0. Pretty cool, no? But what does it mean? Silly question. Everyone knows the city was founded in 1790." (The Washington Times)

3. Washington Power: "[Power is] the city's greatest commodity, and [the name's] got that hip, trendy, no-'s'-at-the-end-of-it thing." Washington Red Skin Potatoes: "A loophole. They still could be called the Red Skins, but it would mean an eatable tuber, not people. The logo could be a flaming potato shaped like a football." (The Washington Times)

5. Washington Jepziwok: "Chippewa for 'great athletes'." (NFL.com)

6. Washington Matwesaso: A word that means 'courageous' in the native Nanticoke dialect — "a relevant choice because the Nanticokes were the dominant tribe of the Potomac region." (NFL.com)

7. Washington Wohnata: "Lakota Sioux for 'they are champions'." (NFL.com)

8. Washington Idini: "Apache for 'like thunder'." (NFL.com)

9. Washington Dragons: "As in Dungeons and Dragons, which I’m pretty sure [team owner Dan Snyder] played a lot as a kid." (Surrounded by 'Skins)

10. Washington Brawlers: "Random and awesome" (Super Massive Blog)

11. Washington Reapers: "Scary." Washington Americans: "Too patriotic? Never. America’s team playing America's game." (Super Massive Blog)

13. Washington Warriors: "In line with the American Indian [theme] without being racist. [Unfortunately the team] would share a name with a generally unsuccessful NBA franchise." (Mr Irrelevant)

14. Washington Hogs: "Definitively Washington football; reminds us of glory days." (Mr Irrelevant)

15. Washington Monks: "[Admittedly arbitrary, but] this is just how much we love [former Redskins wide receiver] Art Monk." (Mr Irrelevant)

16. Washington Warhawks: "Lends itself well to awesome gameday hairstyles." (Mr Irrelevant)

17. DC Comets: "Now there's a name!" (Bleacher Report)

18. Landover Feathers: "Folks (at least Virginia-based ones) aren't happy with either the stadium's location [in Landover, MD] or the team's performance. The name hits on both issues." That policy had coincided with an increase of signs that were critical of Snyder and front-office chief Vinny Cerrato.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

source: http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d81432500&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true

Then let's turn the stadium itself into a sign he can't ban.

Everyone sitting in the designated upper-level sections for the Washington vs Denver game (Nov. 15th at FedEx field) can be part of a giant "FIRE SNYDER" sign just by wearing the color designated for their seat. Here are the participating sections:

401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406

422, 423, 424, 425, 427, 428, 429, 430, 431, 432

450, 451, 452, 453

The photo below gives you an idea of the scale and appearance of the signs (click to view). The sign colors have been inverted.

I decided to make this change after finding a high-resolution shot of the upper sections from the October 26th Monday Night game and hearing about spotty attendance from several folks. The seats are already red--no sense in fighting the stadium itself to make this work.

source: http://fire-snyder-sign.blogspot.com

"If they decide Jason isn't their guy, then number one, who is? Who's available? Who can you get -- is it someone in the draft? A free agent? Someone in trade? Then second, when you get that guy, now what do you have to put in place around him? Personnel and offensive system to take advantage of what he does? That could mean a lot of people learning something they've never done before."

In that same period, the team has drafted seven quarterbacks, though Campbell and Ramsey were the only two selected in the first four rounds, the only two to start for Washington and the only two anointed as the team's quarterback of the future.

If Snyder's 10 years of ownership have demonstrated anything, it's that quarterback shopping is a perilous venture. The hits are few and far between, and a miss can set back a team for several years. If the Redskins give up on Campbell at the end of the season, they will try to avoid allowing the position to turn into the turnstile it was before Campbell took over the starting job in 2006.

Looking back

A sampling of comments made in the days following the Redskins first-round selection of Jason Campbell in the 2005 NFL Draft:

Joe Gibbs, former Redskins head coach: "But I feel like for us and for the value to the organization long-term, I don't think you ever go wrong with a quarterback. I guess that's what I'm saying: If you've got somebody you think is talented and can play for you, I think you look at that and say, 'Where's the value of the pick?' And we felt like certainly he was the guy we needed to get."

Dave Goldberg, Associated Press: "... looks like a good prospect. But he probably would have been there at 40, the pick the Skins traded, and a lot of people think Charlie Frye of Akron, taken by Cleveland with the third pick of the third round (67), is as good or better."

Unnamed SEC defensive coordinator: "He'd win a beauty contest, and the NFL just sees a tall quarterback with a strong arm. They're obviously not looking at all the other intangibles."

Chris Harry, Orlando Sentinel: "Trading three picks to Denver -- including a 2006 first-rounder -- to take Auburn QB Jason Campbell was the bonehead move of the weekend and furthered the Redskins' reputation as the NFL's most mismanaged front office. Campbell wouldn't have been taken by another team in Round 1, and that first-rounder sent to Denver, given the direction of this franchise, could be the No. 1 overall choice next year. It'll be sad watching Hall-of-Fame Coach Joe Gibbs sink with this ship."

Gary Myers, New York Daily News: "Trading up for Auburn QB Jason Campbell late in the first round does nothing for the Redskins now except create an unnecessary quarterback controversy and more confusion. It makes no sense, which means it makes perfect sense for these dysfunctional Redskins. Why is Gibbs, at the age of 64, taking a late first- round quarterback who is not going to help him win now in a win-now league?"

Don Pierson, Chicago Tribune: "Unless coach Joe Gibbs throws Campbell into the mix right away, this is a draft for next year or the year after."

Jason Campbell, Redskins quarterback: "I'm going to come in and learn as much as possible as quick as I can. Participate in practice, work hard and take everything one step at a time. I feel I can learn a lot from Patrick and especially from Mark Brunell. I think it is a tremendous opportunity for me to learn from those guys and take everything one step at a time."

Tommy Tuberville, former Auburn coach: "I knew the surprise in the draft was going to be Jason Campbell. He's had such great workouts for all of the pro scouts coming by. It kind of reminds me of our season."

Rick Gosselin, Dallas Morning News: "When Joe Gibbs was winning Super Bowls in his first go- round with the Redskins, he had stout quarterback and cornerback play. Auburn teammates Campbell and Rogers give Gibbs a chance for that in 2005."

Tony Kornheiser, former Washington Post columnist: "Look, I hope Campbell is great. I'm just wondering if he looks a little better because of what was around him. Auburn had four players picked in the first round, three in the top nine picks! Obviously, the Redskins loaded their shopping cart with Auburn players. I'm stunned Dan Snyder hasn't tried to sign Charles Barkley yet, or at least offered Tommy Tuberville the flat-screen TV he ordered for Laveranues [Coles]."

Carlton Thompson, Houston Chronicle: "Auburn QB Jason Campbell is talented but probably won't play right away, and the Redskins could have done more with their second first- round pick."

By Cindy Boren | November 8, 2009; 9:37 AM ET

source: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/jason-campbell/the-campbell-era-past-present.html

The vibrant, 25-year-old Washington Redskins Cheerleader Ambassador has a website to tell her story and keep well-wishers from around the world informed of her progress as well as to promote true informed consent.

Jennings was training for a half marathon in August 2009 when she received her seasonal flu shot, something she had done several years before. This time, however, her reaction was severe and debilitating. Over the course of several weeks she lost the ability to walk or talk normally, and began to suffer violent seizures and recurrent blackouts.

Jennings was misdiagnosed multiple times with a variety of diagnoses since receiving the influenza shot, which she thought would protect her from illness. She has since been diagnosed by her treating physician, Dr. Rashid A. Buttar, with a number of conditions including but not limited to Acute, Viral Post Immunization Encephalopathy and Mercury Toxicity with secondary respiratory and neurological deficits.

Since then her story has made headlines here and abroad, with videos explaining her disorder garnering millions of hits on YouTube. The responses she has received have been overwhelmingly supportive, encouragingand informative. Celebrity couple Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carey helped point Desiree in the right direction through Generation Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and reversing autism.

The treatments with Dr. Buttar at the Center for Advanced Medicine and Clinical Research in Charlotte, NC are working, and the results are nothing short of amazing. Jennings can now walk and talk normally throughout the vast majority of the day and the seizures/convulsions have significantly decreased. Although her full recovery will take an undetermined amount of time, her family is now for the first time, convinced she will make a complete recovery. She is now more than ever, driven by a desire to educate others to be informed of the potential side effects caused by vaccines and prevent others from suffering a similar fate.

Visitors to her new website, www.DesireeJennings.com, will find regular updates on her progress, helpful details on her treatment and valuable information on the importance of informed consent truly knowing ALL of the options before making important medical decisions.

I set up the site to tell my story and warn people of the neurological side effects that can result from vaccinations, Jennings said, Especially knowing that in the majority of cases, these stories are seldom heard outside of immediate families and friends."

I know us Redskins fans are feeling pretty low during the bye week. I can't imagine you feel much better.

I'm glad you've taken the time to read this letter because I think there are a few things I can share with you that will help make your team better for next year.

First a few questions, if you don't mind.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 358px; height: 243px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mwPu3Zy4TPU/SvNSY2VRV0I/AAAAAAAAGHg/plgTuZ6qqjA/s400/89768403.jpg.24145.0_feature.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400750965002426178" />First off, do you even pay attention to the news? I'm sure you don't watch the local stations much, I mean I can't remember a time since you bought the team that they have not bad-mouthed you.

If you don't watch the local stations, I will mention what you are missing. On NBC 4, there is this fine sports reporter, Lindsay Czarniak. She makes taking the unsettling news about the Skins that much easier. Wow, she's hot.

Sorry, got side tracked a little. Anyway, even if you don't watch the local channels, surely you've seen the mockery being made of your franchise on the national stations.

ESPN, NFL Network, and even the video game channel G4 have all been poking fun at the Redskins, or as many people have taken to calling them, the "Deadskins."

But don't worry, Mr. Snyder (can I call you Danny?). Anyway, don't worry, Danny. I'm not one of those people. I know after this week we will rise up and smite everyone.

I mean it's not like the schedule is that tough in November, right? Oh, its the hardest schedule in the NFL? Oh well, Danny, my good man, we still will rise up!

Here's my second question: Is it hard to see all the national talking heads mock your every decsion year in and year out?

You must have skin thicker than a crocodile to be able to deflect all the slings and arrows that come your way.

Again, Danny, don't worry, because you still have me. I know this is all a part of your master plan. You're lulling the rest of the NFL to sleep.

You want them to take your team lightly and then we shall strike like a pit viper and string together Super Bowl runs the likes of which have never been seen.

That leads me to my next question: After 10 years, don't you think the NFL is now truly sleeping on this team?

Wouldn't now be the ideal time to strike?

Wait, scratch that. Who am I to question your greatness, sir? I'm a nobody. Please, please, Great Snyder, do not smite me for questioning your all-knowing power.

However, Danny, I mean sir, I mean master, when will you stop playing the fool and show the world that you knew what you were doing all along?

Again, sir, I know your greatness, why else would Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx want to "hang" with you? Surely not because of your money.

Also, sir, there is this guy in your oganization; I believe Vincent Cerrato is his name. I'm sure you at least know of him because I've seen you talking to him. However, if you don't, I understand—us mere mortals must look the same to you from your mount on high.

But back to Vincent, what does he do? Does he actually pick players and personnel?

He must because I can't see you making the weird choices that have been made for this team, unless this is all part of your grand scheme which we discussed earlier.

However, I worry about overhead. Do you really need to pay this guy? As far as I'm concerned, he doesn't really do anything.

I know it is awkward to fire someone, so why don't we fix the glitch? Stop sending him a check, move his desk to the basement, and take his red stapler.

Eventually he'll get the idea, I think.

Let's talk about this Jim Zorn and Jason Campbell business. I believe you've torched those bridges good.

I'm not sure why you did this, but again, sir, I won't dare question your reasoning. However, what are we going to do next year?

I'm sure you've been throwing a ton of money around at people to get the right coach in here and I don't blame you, but have you thought about Russ Grimm? I think he'd be great for the team, but again, sir, I defer to your wisdom.

As far as a quarterback, I hear your pal Sonny Jergenson can still sling the old pig skin around and I'm sure he'll work cheap. However, I hear he doesn't move too well these days, so we'll have to get a line around him.

Well sir, that's all I have for now. I hope the rest of your season goes well from here on out. I mean, the team isn't technically eliminated from the playoffs, so who knows?

Maybe the rest of the NFC East will get a bad case of the swine flu, and you know what they say: "Once you're in the playoffs, anything can happen."

Your Biggest Fan,

Josh

source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/284037-an-open-letter-to-dan-snyder

Snyder. The organization is making no official comment about Riggins' harsh words Wednesday night on Showtime's "Inside the NFL," but Blache spoke for nearly four minutes to reporters today. He did not take any questions. In defense of the team owner, he said:

"This morning when I came in, and I turned my computer on and I was looking at Pro Football Talk, and I saw comments that John Riggins made about Mr. Snyder. And it really bothered me, the more I sat there at my desk. There's been a lot of criticism of him over the last few weeks. And this is a man I've known for six years, since I've been here. And in the six years, I've never seen John Riggins here. I met him once at Beach Blitz down in Virginia Beach. Never seen him in the building.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 251px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mwPu3Zy4TPU/SvNOO2fjzbI/AAAAAAAAGHY/cL_Q5yqMWDo/s400/skinsloselions09a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400746395200376242" />"To hear such a vicious criticism of somebody I consider not just my employer, but a good friend, bothered me. And as much as I hadn't been talking to you, I felt like this is something I needed to do. Somebody needed to stand up and set this record straight. This person, the comment that was made, a 'dark heart,' that's totally, totally untrue. The problem is the fans don't get to know Mr. Snyder like we do, so they get an impression of things that are written and things people say. I'll tell you something from a person who's been here for six years who's gone to him for things that I've needed in my family, there's times that he's come to me when he's heard about issues in my family, and offered his assistance. It's unsurpassed. He's one of the most generous, kind individuals you'll ever meet. My wife and I are involved in hospice, and there's been countless times he's come and helped us with issues with hospice. So to see that and get the feeling that that's what everybody on the outside gets to hear about this person, I just felt like it was time for somebody to stand up and set the record straight. I decided that I was going to do it, I was going to do it today because it's enough. I mean, it really is. We've had criticism from other people outside the building, saying what Dan Snyder is and what he isn't. You don't know Dan Snyder, and that's the problem.

"Do I agree with everything that Dan Snyder does? No, trust me. Because he and I, we work together. And I'm not going to tell you that this is a utopia. There's no utopias in football, there's no utopias in life. At the same time, enough's enough. Every story, there's one person's side, there's another person's side and behind it all, there's a third side and it's the truth. I just thought it was time for somebody to come and just throw a little truth out there. We keep hearing these other sides, these other factions, and to be quite candid, the third side - the truth - this person, all he wants to do is win. That's all he wants to do. He'll spend his money, he'll spend his time. He wants to win. He's here for the people, for the fans, for the Washington Redskins. There's nobody who's pained more when we're not successful than Dan Snyder. There's nobody that cares more about the fans than Dan Snyder, there's nobody who wants to win here more than Dan Snyder.

"I just think it's time to be put out there, it's time that you guys understand that everything that's wrong with this organization is not Dan Snyder. It's so easy for the people who held... a microphone every day to point fingers and shuffle it off somewhere else. But at the same time, I'm in a ton of those meetings when decisions are made. And so a lot of the things that wrong, you can't go back and somehow it was so-and-so's fault because that's how those comments were made. So just to set the record straight, I think it was wrong. I wish the best for Mr. Riggins and all his endeavors or whatever he does. But for me, that was enough. And I just felt like for me to wash my face in the morning and to feel like a man or to talk to my kids about doing the right thing, I needed to come here and make that comment today.

"I've got no other interest in it. I have a contract for next year, so it's not like I'm trying to make something up. If they send me home, the way coaches' contracts are written, they have to pay me anyway. So quite honestly, this is unsolicited. But from the heart, just something I just felt I needed to do. The position they put Jim in, it shouldn't happen," Holmgren told ESPN Radio in Chicago, via NFL.com.

"You can be upset with me as a play-caller or how the team's going, (then) fire me. But don't do that. Don't pull the rug out from under me, tie my hands, make me look foolish … take away what I came there for to do in the first place. Don't do that."

Zorn was on Holmgren's staff in Seattle for eight years before becoming the Redskins' head coach in 2008. Washington installed consultant Sherm Lewis as play-caller on Oct. 19.

The coach said Snyder and Cerrato "strongly suggested" he relinquish play-calling, while Hall of Famer Steve Largent, a friend of Zorn, said the Redskins were trying to force Zorn to quit.

The Redskins had a bye on Sunday, after losing 27-17 to the Eagles last Monday in Lewis' first game as play-caller.

Holmgren, who resigned as Seahawks coach after last season and has said he would consider a return to the game in the future, has joined John Riggins, John Kent Cooke and Rich Gannon as NFL figures criticizing Snyder.

"That bothered me a lot," Holmgren said of Zorn's job change. "Jim Zorn is one of the nice people. I'm a nice guy, but I'm not that nice. Jim Zorn is really a nice man. What they did, I did not like it at all." -- Sean Leahy

source: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/thehuddle/post/2009/11/mike-homgren-redskins-have-been-unfair-to-jim-zorn/1
