From a derelict historic landmark to the ultimate home by the sea

[April 16, 2024] – When Sheila Consaul decided to bid on this historic lighthouse in Ohio in a government auction she had no idea what a renovation of this scale would entail. In 2011, she finally won the lighthouse with a bid of around $71,000 (£56k) but it took a lot more money and ten long years to transform it into her dream vacation home with unparalleled ocean views.

When not staying in the lighthouse in Fairport Harbor, Ohio, Consaul lives outside of Washington, DC. She told Insider that it was through her DC channels she found out the Fairport Harbor West Lighthouse had gone up for auction.

The U.S. government’s General Services Administration has announced plans to offload 10 lighthouses, including two located in Lake Erie.

Bidding will open on June 30 at 11 a.m. EST for the Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Light, which has a 50-foot conical tower and keeper’s quarters at the entrance to Cleveland’s harbor. It’s only accessible by boat, but it has stellar views of the city. Bidding will start at $25,000 and increase by $1,000 increments.

A historic, white and red, lakefront property located just off the shores of Lake Erie and surrounded by glittering water on all sides. Its name? The Fairport Harbor West lighthouse.

In 2011, Ms Consaul won the light station in a government auction with a bid of about $71,000 (£57,494).
