Blogger's Quilt Festival, Fall 2017

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of showing my latest quilt at the first quilt show put on by the Fort Collins Modern Quilt Guild in downtown Fort Collins, CO. I am now pleased to also be sharing it as part of Blogger's Quilt Festival put on by Amy of Amy's Creative Side. If you've not already, be sure to go over and check out all of the other amazing quilts linked up.

This particular quilt was pieced as part of the guild's Roaming Quilt Bee. We each started with one or a few "inspiration blocks" and a theme. For mine, I chose some special fabrics in my favorite rainbow color palette and put together the X blocks and the semi-circles:

The only theme I selected was to follow the color palette. I chose come particularly special fabrics as I knew this would be a year long labor. Then each month we rotated the quilts and each quilter added on to the quilt. When the quilt rotated around the circle back to us, we had a completed quilt top!

Then the last month of the Bee I gave birth to my daughter, and so the top waited patiently. And then a few more quilts jumped ahead of it in line for baby showers. This summer I finally was able to pull it back out and get it quilted. Given the scale of some of the blocks, I decided to make this quilt extra-special and rented some time on a long arm at The Presser Foot down in Longmont, CO. This is officially my first quilt quilted on a long arm! I did something different for each block, and am really proud of how it turned out.

The Great Pillow Fight Swap 2014

If you've followed my blog for a while, you know that I regularly like to participate in the Pillow Talk Swap on Flickr. Now recently it hasn't had any swaps, so another group was formed by the people who wanted to keep going, called The Great Pillow Fight. This is its first round, and my partner mentioned liking linen and "clean", so this is the mockup I originally created for the pillow:

After playing with the pieces a bit during actual construction, I did change up my design a bit, and ended up with this for the top:

And here is the completed pillow I made for my (still secret) partner:

I quilted it with lines 1/4" apart, and added a zipper at the bottom for inserting and removing the pillow form.

I sure hope you like this partner. :)

FCMQG Quilt Retreat 2014

A couple of weekends ago I had the pleasure of joining 10 other lovely ladies from the Fort Collins Modern Quilt Guild for a 3 night retreat. I spent most of my time hand sewing down binding and a sleeve on my Chicopee quilt while looking at this:

Not a bad way to spend a weekend. :)

At the retreat we did a mini-quilt swap, and I decided to dig into my Mendocino scraps and create a half-size swoon.

The Charlie Harper gold matches the Mendocino gold amazingly well. I used more of this print on the back.

I added a tiny scrap of seahorses to the binding for a little extra detail.

In exchange I received this lovely mini quilt from kaliebridgel, which now hangs above my desk so I can stare at it all day while I work. :)

{the Purge} Week 1

Have you heard about the purge by Rachel of Stitched In Color? Its a chance for all of use to work through the fabric in our stash that just doesn't excite us any more for one reason or another. Then Rachel is hosting links to show off how we used it every other week.

For myself, I knew exactly what I wanted to tackle. Over the last few years I've been quilting, I've managed to accrue a number of stacks of fabric that were purchased and set aside for a specific project. But if I didn't start the project right away, they ended up languishing on my shelves, mocking me for not having started them yet, making me feel guilty that I need to do those planned projects before I start new projects I'm inspired to work on right now, and not being a useful contribution to my stash since they are already reserved.

It's not that the fabrics are by any means ugly - many of them are great, but its just the fact it was a project I never started, and now the excitement when I first bought fabrics for them has dwindled and it feels more like a burden to complete them. To such an extent for some months now I've forbidden myself to buy fabric for a specific project unless I was able to start it immediately, so it wouldn't continue to pile on.

So for my part in the purge, I'd like to work through those backed up stacks of fabric and actually turn them into the projects I intended them for.

So first up I brought out my Chicopee that I bought to make this quilt. This quilt is destined for our bed - this will be my first time having a legitimate quilt for my own bed - woot woot!

So far, I've already been able to complete the top:

It sure felt good to free up those 26 comic book boards these were taking up in my stash. :) And double bonus, I'll be showing it at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival next month!

Modern Quilt Guild Michael Miller Challenge 2014

Hey folks. Last night I finally finished sewing down the binding on my entry for the Modern Quilt Guild Michael Miller Challenge. Each of us that chose to participate were given a subset of the fabrics from Petal Pinwheels by Michael Miller. These are the four I received:

I decided to pair them with Kona Nightfall, as I thought the contrast really made them stand out, and might be a bit of a different color combination than others might choose in the challenge. Our guild specifically made the challenge to make a pillow.

I decided I wanted to use the paper pieced hedgehog from Artisania (free pattern here) centered in a wreath of yo-yos. I think that yo-yos are under utilized in modern quilting, and wanted to make a modern interpretation of them.

A few close-ups of the different elements (the dime is for scale):

I quilted the whole piece aside from the hedgie in a small meander with matching navy 50wt Aurifil thread. As for all of my pillows, I used fusible fleece in place of a batting and lining. It always gives it a nice structure, and saves me the fabric for a lining.

Lastly I framed it in a scrappy binding created from the challenge fabrics. I love the look of binding on a finished pillow - it has a similar appearance to piping, and doesn't have the "bulky corners" problem I've faced with turning so I can get nice sharp points.

Now to find time to go shopping for a new pillow form.... ;)

Wrapping yourself in the Word of God

The concept of this quilt began with the idea for a text fabric with scripture for the content. Text fabric has become extremely popular in modern quilting, and I loved the idea of a scriptural text fabric to give more meaning to the words on the fabric - where reading a piece of the text fills you with God's Word, rather than some peculiar gibberish.

As I continued to swirl this idea around in my head, I couldn't help but chuckle at the very literal manifestation of the expression to "wrap yourself in the Word of God". How wonderful would it be to literally snuggle into a quilt with the words of your Creator when you are feeling low? Or to sit with it in your lap during your daily bible time or during prayer? A quilt that embodies both the love and comfort that goes into making someone a quilt, along with the love and comfort of your God?

After searching for a while, I was rather surprised not to find a plethora of scriptural fabric in production already. In fact, I couldn't find any that were continuous blocks of text, only individual verses or phrases scattered across the fabric. So I decided to go a more personal route and use Spoonflower to custom print the quilt back with the favorite book of the Bible of the recipient, which in this case was Romans. Using a copyright-free translation of the Bible, I fit Romans into precisely 4 yards, which I pieced into a 72" x 88" quilt back. For the front I settled on modifying the New Wave quilt pattern by Elizabeth Hartman to look more like mountains, instead of waves. Growing up and living in Colorado, I was always most impacted by the greatness of God when surrounded by the Rocky Mountains - away from all of the things man built and surrounded by nature. I know the recipient of this quilt also has a special place in his heart for spending time in these same mountains, so it seemed like a good fit.

I selected a palette of white, grey, and navy to imitate a mountain range fading off into the distance, as well as to keep it masculine and modern. I used predominantly solids to keep it clean, but did use one print to add visual interest. Above you can see what my original plan looked like, and below you can see the design once it was completed.

For the quilting I chose to reinforce the mountain concept by adding white snowcaps and some organic wavy lines in a matching thread color, after anchoring the piece by quilting alongside the horizontal seams.

Overall I was very pleased with the outcome, and it definitely passed the snuggly test. :-)

I have been thinking about continuing some work on the scriptural text fabric idea, perhaps at a smaller scale as the text for this particular project was on the large side. What do you guys think - would you want to see text fabric created from biblical text?

An embarrassing confession

So, I have a bit of an embarrassing confession to make. Some of you who have been around here for a while may know that my quilts are generally gifts or donated. What you may not realize, is that after 3 years of quilting, I still had not made my very own son a quilt. In fact, we didn't have a single quilt we kept in the house - every single one had gone out the door. When my husband, who is completely disinterested in quilting, said the next one really should be for Paul, I knew I needed to put this right.

I had purchased this fabric to make him a quilt back when he was still an infant. I love Dr. Seuss, and I felt it was something he could grow with over time. It seems it was a good choice, because all along the way I could barely keep the WIP away from him. He was all ready to take it to be with him when it was nothing more than a top. It was pretty adorable. :)

Since it came with a number of panels, I decided not to use a pattern and instead designed the quilt around those panels and the quantities of each fabric I had on hand. I used the stripes together with the panels to create a bit of a filmstrip effect across the quilt, and filled in between with the prints.

The back was pieced with the remaining fabric and a solid blue I had purchased along with the original fabric. I made sure to save enough of that red binding for a stripe-y binding. I love a good striped binding.

I chose a large meander for the quilting. It actually gives the feeling of large puzzle pieces, which I thought fit perfectly with the juvenile theme of this quilt.

I am glad my son cares for it, and has something more special to snuggle up with at night. He seems to appreciate that it was "Made by Mommy", despite his young age. There is not much that could melt a mommy's heart more than that.

Prince Charming

There is something very special about fabric from Tula Pink. Most fabrics shout out to you. "Hey you, shopper, look at how cute/amazing/fun I am. Don't you want to take me home and add me to your stash? Just look at my adorable fish/gnomes/mermaids? Wouldn't my text/stripes/seeds be such a versatile mixer?"

But Tula Pink fabrics are different. The first time you meet you are just getting acquainted. Each time you meet after that, you notice a little something you didn't see there before. A scallop that is actually a snail. Or a little girl catching butterflies or swinging with her hair blowing out behind her. Instead of screaming at you, they slowly whisper their story to you. And every time, without fail, the more I get to know them, the more I fall in love.

This quilt is made almost exclusively with Tula's Prince Charming line. I actually found it as a quilt kit at a quilt festival a long while back, but sadly I lost the information on the shop or origin of the pattern in between. I loved the combination of the satin with the quilting cottons. That little bit of shimmer in the perfect shade of green to go with Tula's fabric was just too much for me to resist.

Looking straight on you can see the quilt itself is fairly simple, and it expectedly went together really quickly. It is definitely all about showing off the fabric. I selected a quilt motif meant to be evocative of ripples in water, to go with the aquatic theme of this line. This motif was super easy to quilt and I anticipate re-using it again in the future.

It now has a happy spot on the pretty aqua wall behind my sewing desk in our office (and hopefully some day nursery).

Pillow Talk Swap, Round 10

For this round of Pillow Talk Swap, I knew I wanted to use some Heather Ross for my partner's pillow. However, none of the Heather Ross I actually own fits very well into a full rainbow (an always popular choice for PTS), so this time I got to play with some more restricted color palette.

First I thought about some mermaids...

... but then I settled on some fishies.

I wanted to go for a sophisticated and modern feel, with a little bit of whimsy in the fish. I sure hope my partner likes this one, because I sure do. This will be a hard one to let go. :)

It finishes at a whopping 24" square. I actually don't even own a pillow form large enough to fill it out properly lol. But I hope you can get the general idea.

Next time: I finally finish a quilt that will stay in our household!

Echo Quilt

I created this quilt for a friend of mine based off of the Modern Stripes pattern from Frozen Knickers. The quilt is twin sized, and measures 68" x 80".

The fabric is all Echo by Lotta Jansdotter with Kona White. For the back I used big blocks of Echo, Kona White, and some Kona Medium Grey.

I wanted to keep the quilting simple to reinforce the horizontal stripes, so I did some stitch-in-the-ditch quilting every 2" along each strip.

In the end I really love how this quilt came together - it is one of my favorite quilts I have made so far. I wish you all could see it in person - it really is beautiful in its simplicity. I would highly recommend this pattern. :)

Homemade Journals

Today I'd like to take a moment to share a pair of journals I made as gifts. The first is in an improvisational style and used an unusual (for me) color palette of peaches and navy.

I did a little embroidery by hand in the mermaids hair to add a small textural element.

The second journal centered around the Goldfish in a Bag print from Heather Ross, using a blue, green, and black color palette.

The cover is made entirely from 1.5" squares, with the exception of the fish. Most of these fabrics came from my scrap bin. These journal covers are really a great way to use up scraps and get the satisfaction of a quick finish!

The inside front cover contained a little surprise!

I can't get enough of that moustache fabric - I think its absolutely hilarious. :)

Both journals were made using a free tutorial from Stitched in Color. These covers are great little gifts since they give you a chance to make something special and exercise a little creativity without overcommitting yourself - you can easily make one in a single evening. And since they fit standard composition notebooks that can be switched out, they can be used over and over again - a bonus if you go through a lot of notebooks!

Celebrate Good Stitches

do. Good Stitches, May 2012

This quilt was started by the gals in the Faith circle of do. Good Stitches way back in May. I've been working on it slowly, but surely, ever since, and can finally call this one done.

This quilt is a bit more traditional, but I do love red and white quilts.

The block is called the "Ohio Star". Together with 6" sashing this quilt is about perfect for a Full/Double bed (show here on our Queen).

For the first time ever I ventured away from an all over FMQ, and quilted feathers in the sashing.

This will be my last do. Good Stitches quilt, at least for the forseeable future. I just don't have the time to dedicate to it any longer, as you can see by how long it took me to complete this one quilt, and I'd love to have some time to sew some things for my own family. I love what these women do, and look forward to seeing where they go in the future. They are a talented and compassionate bunch.

My First Sweater

Today I have a knitting finish for you - my first ever sweater! As far as apparel goes it is certainly nothing special, but I intentionally was trying to pick a simple project to transition into knitting clothing.

The pattern is "Vested Baby Boy" by Scarlet Taylor, which I found via Ravelry.

I had a little difficulty with the neckline - when I first completed the collar, my son's head would not fit through the hole! That would be a bit of a problem. :) The traditional bind-off I used just had no stretch at all. So I undid the bind-off and used this method combined with a larger needle size to finish it, and now it stretches easily to come on and off.

I definitely want to work on my knitting to be able to make sweaters and socks for myself, there are some absolutely gorgeous sweaters on Ravelry that are crying to be made. I just need to work on my skill to be able to do them justice first. :)

Pillow Talk Swap 8

The mailing deadline for round 8 of The Pillow Talk Swap is today, so naturally I just finished my pillow right before midnight last night. I'm pretty sure this is my favorite pillow I've made yet.

Despite being so under the gun to finish, I did actually start a couple of weeks ago. This star pattern is called the Lonestar, and I made it by hand-sewing 200 diamonds together using the English Paper Piecing method.

I then machine appliqued the star to the background, and did a little straight line quilting for interest.

I love the Flea Market Fancy grey seeds that I used for the background - I'm already starting to fret I didn't buy enough of the reprint and this is the first I've used of it.

I sure hope my partner likes her pillows big - I put one of our king-size pillows inside for these pictures!

Things are still settling in around here after the big interstate move. I finally plugged in my sewing machine the other night after it being away for a whole month (yikes!). I haven't had any time to make anything to show you yet, but I wanted to take some time today to let you know about an amazing indie designer I stumbled on in Spoonflower: Holli Zollinger.

She designs these amazing modern prints.

Many of them are such statement fabrics, yet work together so well, you can easily see how they could be used all together in a quilt, or on their own.

Some are great blenders.

And some make a statement.

Some are minimalist.

And others are whimsical.
