New Paintings by Andy Kehoe

More paintings of human-animal hybrid figures set in forested backgrounds. His recent works incorporate oil and acrylic on multiple layers of resin which adds a three-dimensional aspect to the paintings.

I’ve always loved creating little worlds within my work. One of my favorite aspects of these resin boxes is that they contain an almost tangible version of these enclosed little worlds of mine.

Woven photographs inspired by tapestry weaving techniques that explores the architecture of daily life.

The woven landscapes were created using a technique inspired by my study of tapestry weaving. Each one involves several photographs taken from multiple angles and, if possible, multiple heights as well.

Through the use of camera distortions and selective offsetting of the strips, varying degrees of abstraction are introduced for the purpose of more deeply engaging the senses and creating a visual journey. It is my hope that the experience leaves the viewer feeling a bit more attuned to their everyday environment.

Photos of staged dioramas created in a large aquarium that play on themes of eternal landscapes.

What makes these dioramas unusual is that they are created in a 200 gallon tank filled with water. Though I sometimes build a scene in front of and behind the tank, most of the “action” takes place in the tank with paint injected into the water for cloud formations. I use whatever materials I can find on the street, in stores and on the internet that might add to a perception of reality that is not quite what it seems.

Beautiful paintings of room interiors, most likely artist studios as you can see from the scattered paint tubes, bottles of turpentine, paint brushes, and the pictures pasted on the walls as either sources of inspiration or the main subjects of the painting. The soft light coming through the window reminds me of Johannes Vermeer's paintings.

These works are very much in the tradition of portrait painting but created entirely out of pushpins. They resemble the paintings of Chuck Close which looks abstract from a short distance but become highly realistic from afar.

In my work I aim to explore themes of individuality and representation. My subjects are imprisoned, diluted, marginalized. Their escape, however, is imminent. Whether a symptom of corporate and social homogenization, or the four base pairs of DNA, we are products of just a small handful of variables. In five colors of plastic, you can be reproduced.

I enjoy very much making something digital with my hands. I enjoy making work that requires a physical proximity. I enjoy the fact that this work travels from the intangible, the binary, to the tactile, the singular. By invoking these mediums, I hope to generate a dialogue and sentiment that has something to do with the effort, repetition, focus, discipline, absurdity, and love that went into its making.

I came to realize that the appeal of representational painting since the advent of photography is due in a large part to the painting process. Although the image itself may come to resemble an ordinary photograph, a psychological intensity can be felt in the handmade work, as the artist’s laboriously slow method, intense concentration, and myriad of artistic decisions lie behind the creation of the image. In my work, I hope the viewer senses this tension between photography and the handmade — the instantaneous and the prolonged, the ubiquitous and the unique, the impartial and the personal.

Nearly all my paintings are based on photographs I have taken, primarily of Southern California scenes, over the years. Though it was never my intention to depict nostalgic scenes, many of the images I have painted have disappeared or been radically altered in the ever-changing landscape that is Southern California. Thus nostalgia is thrust upon the works. But what I am really after is bearing witness, and making people stop what they're doing and pay attention, to something they may have never seen before, but that makes them feel “I know this.”

I feel an affinity with this country because it is where my ancestors are from. There was no question about it when I met the people and drove around the country. I felt like I had found a part of myself which had always been missing. So, I made a project for two months on the rugged coast of Donegal about the potato famine and the period when my family emigrated to America. I am not a writer so I will end this shortly but I will say, spending time in Ireland was like living inside the best novel I had ever read….the music, the landscape and most importantly, the people made me feel like I was finally home.

Photos of projected images of the outside view on the back walls of rooms using a small lens or a prism.

A few years ago, in order to push the visual potential of this process, I began to use color film and positioned a lens over the hole in the window plastic in order to add to the overall sharpness and brightness of the incoming image. Now, I often use a prism to make the projection come in right side up. I have also been able to shorten my exposures considerably thanks to digital technology, which in turn makes it possible to capture more momentary light. I love the increased sense of reality that the outdoor has in these new works. The marriage of the outside and the inside is now made up of more equal partners.

Mixed media works that grew out of the artist's fascination with pop culture and female icons as well as a passion for vintage materials, modern fashion, and design.

Trim, fashion-forward silhouettes serve as central icons in this mixed-media collage, that deconstructs and illuminates the feminine ideal.

Figures are stripped of fashion and makeup, and built from layers of found and vintage papers that have been sanded, scraped and resurfaced. Aged movie posters, produce crate labels, advertising signs, and related materials compose the colors, patterns, and text that surround and become the figures.

While the women in this work are pared down forms, they remain thin, long-legged, and sexy. There is a palpable ambivalence surrounding this work that both denounces the cultural pressure to be perfect while acknowledging a deep desire to achieve societal standards of beauty.

Photos of giant storm clouds or Supercells taken in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota.

The storms we were chasing were Supercells, capable of producing grapefruit sized hail, and spectacular tornadoes; they were 50 miles wide and reached as high as 65,000 ft. into the atmosphere. These clouds were so large that they had the capability of blocking all daylight, making it very dark and ominous standing under them.

Ethereal and organic in nature, my paintings rest in the pause between movement and stillness, emergence and dissolution, where time may unfold slowly through subtle interplays of color and shifting light. I am interested in a visual language that speaks to how the ineffable beauty of life is held within a profound fragility of impermanence.
