1 Samuel-Esther Review

Read: 1 Samuel-Esther

Ask your child:

Why did Israel ask for a king? They wanted to be like other nations.
What happened when Israel strayed into idolatry? The kingdom was divided and eventually the people were exiled.
What happened when Israel repented? God restored Israel.

Emphasize this principle: God offers abundant life to His people. Therefore, we should repent and devote ourselves to him.

Practice:

Praise God for being faithful to His people and promises.
Repent of sin and cling to the Lord.

Praise: “Create In Me a Clean Heart”

Prepare for next week: Matthew 3:1-17

Memorize for Apr 13-May 4: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8*

God Restores Jerusalem’s Wall and People

Read: Nehemiah 1-10

Ask your child:

How did God use Nehemiah? Nehemiah led the people to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls.
How did the Israelites respond to the reading of God’s Word? They repented.

Emphasize this principle: God restores what is broken. Therefore, we should repent and seek His glory.

Practice:

Praise God for being faithful to His people and promises.
Repent from sin and live to honor God.

Praise: “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

Prepare for next week: Review 1 Samuel-Esther

Memorize for Mar 9-Apr 6: “…in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.” Ephesians 4:22-24*

God Uses Esther to Protect the Jews

Read: Esther

Ask your child:

How did Esther become Ahasuerus’s queen? The king selected her from among all the women of the kingdom.
How did God use Esther to protect His people? God used Esther to intercede for her people.

Emphasize this principle: God presents us with redemptive opportunities, and we should be ready to seize them.

Practice:

Praise God for His sovereign care.
Be courageous in doing the right thing.

What did God reveal about Himself by saving Daniel? God revealed that He is faithful to His children.

Emphasize this principle: God deserves our trust. Therefore, we should live faithfully for Him.

Develop the habit of praying continually.
Trust God to be faithful at all times.

God Protects Daniel’s Friends

Read: Daniel 3

Ask your child:

Why did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego disobey the king? Worshiping an idol would displease God.
What did God reveal about Himself by delivering Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego? God is able to rescue those who trust Him.

Emphasize this principle: God alone deserves our worship. Therefore, we should keep ourselves from idols.

Practice:

Give the Lord your full devotion.
Demonstrate God’s worth to others by obeying His Word.

Praise: “You Are God Alone”

God Shows Mercy to Jonah and Nineveh

Ask your child:

Why didn’t Jonah want to preach to Nineveh? Jonah didn’t want God to show the Ninevites mercy.
How was God merciful to Jonah and Nineveh? God gave both the opportunity to repent.

Emphasize this principle: God is merciful. Therefore, we should repent and share God’s mercy with others.

Practice:

Thank God for being merciful to sinners.
Ask God to use you to show mercy to others.

Praise: “Humble Thyself in the Sight of the Lord”

God Punishes Judah

Read: 2 Kings 21-25

Ask your child:

Why did God punish Judah? God’s people had strayed into ever increasing levels of rebellion and idolatry.
What did God promise would happen after Israel repented? God promised to hear them and restore them to the land.

Emphasize this principle: “God judges sin. Therefore we should flee idolatry.”

Practice:

Hate sin as God does.
Repent from sin and ask God for forgiveness.

Praise: “Blessed Be the Name of the Lord”

Prepare for next week: Jonah 1-4

The following lesson was taught in our children’s Sunday School classes on Sunday, February 22. We would encourage you to use the ideas below to review Sunday’s lesson with your family.

Elijah and the Prophets of Baal

Read: 1 Kings 17:1; 18:17–46

Ask your child:

Why did Elijah call the Israelites and priests of Baal to Mount Carmel? Elijah challenged the priests of Baal to a contest that would to reveal which god was truly God.
How was God glorified through the events on Mount Carmel? Baal was proven to be a false god, while the Lord was shown to be the only true God. Idolatry was judged and the Lord exalted.

Emphasize this principle: The Lord is the only true God. Therefore, we should worship him alone.

Practice:

Demonstrate God’s supremacy by worshiping Him alone.
Tell others that the Lord is the only true God.

Praise: “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

Prepare for next week: 2 Kings 21-25

God Judges Jeroboam

Read: 1 Kings 11:35-38; 12:1–33; 14:1–18

Ask your child:

Who became leader of Israel after Solomon? Rehoboam
What happened when Rehoboam increased the labor of the 10 northern tribes? The kingdom was divided into two nations—Israel and Judah.
Who became leader of the new northern nation? Jeroboam
How did Jeroboam sin? He led Israel into greater idolatry.
What were the consequences of Jeroboam sin? His son died, his dynasty was ended, and Israel would eventually be exiled.

Emphasize this principle: God blesses obedience and judges rebellion. Therefore, we should obey.

Practice:

Praise God for providing examples that warn and instruct us.
Humbly obey God’s Word.

Praise: “Humble Thyself in the Sight of the Lord”

Prepare for next week: 1 Kings 17:1; 18:17–46

The Life of Solomon

Read: 1 Kings 2:1-4; 3:1-15; 8:1-9:9; 11

Ask your child:

What did Solomon request from God? Wisdom
Why was God pleased with Solomon’s request? Wisdom would help Solomon honor God and lead Israel to do the same.
What did Solomon build for God? The temple.
What did God expect from Israel’s kings? Complete devotion to the Lord.
Why did God punish Solomon? Solomon married many pagan wives and led Israel into idolatry.

Emphasize this principle: God wants our full devotion. Therefore, we should pursue him faithfully.

Practice:

Ask God for wisdom to faithfully obey Him.
Pray for deliverance from temptation.
Spend regular time reading God’s Word.

Praise: “More Precious Than Silver”

Prepare for next week: 1 Kings 11:35–38; 12:1–33; 14:1–18
