The following lesson was taught in our children’s Sunday School classes on Sunday, October 11. We would encourage you to use the ideas below to review Sunday’s lesson with your family.

Genesis Review

Read: Genesis 1-50

Ask your child:

• What existed “in the beginning”? Only God
• Who created everything that exists? God
• What do the stories of Adam & Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph teach us about our relationship with God? A relationship with God requires trust and submission to His plan.
• Who always takes care of His people? God

Emphasize this principle: God created us to know Him. Therefore,

we should trust and obey.

Practice:

• Praise God for His work in creation & faithfulness to His people.
• Trust in God’s control by obeying His Word

Prepare for next week:  Read Exodus 1-4

Praise: “Trust and Obey”

Memorize for Oct 13-Nov 3: “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.” James 1:22*

God Preserves Joseph and Israel

Read: Genesis 37, 39-50

Ask your child:

• What did Joseph’s brothers do to him? His brothers sold him into slavery.
• What happened after Joseph was sold into slavery? He interpreted dreams for Pharaoh and was put in charge of Egypt.
• How did God reunite Joseph and his brothers? The famine brought them together. Joseph forgave and cared for his family.

Emphasize this principle: God uses everything in our lives to help us grow. Therefore, we should please him with every choice we make.

Practice:

• Trust God, even when life is hard.
• Forgive others when they sin against you.

Praise: “Rejoice in the Lord Always”

Prepare for next week: Genesis 1-50

God Chooses Jacob Over Esau

Read: Genesis 25:21-26; 27:1-29

Ask your child:

• What were the names of Isaac and Rebekah’s twin boys? Esau, who liked to hunt, and Jacob, who liked to cook
• Why did Esau sell his birthright to Jacob? Esau valued momentary pleasure over long-term treasure.
• How did Jacob get the family blessing? Jacob wore Esau’s clothes and put goat hair on his arms.

Emphasize this principle: God is in control. Therefore, we should trust Him and submit to his plan.

Practice:

• Praise God for His sovereign plan.
• Obey God by following His Word and serving others.
• Trust God by patiently waiting on the Lord’s timing.

Sing: “God Is So Good”

Prepare for next week: Genesis 37; Genesis 39-50

God Sends Isaac and Tests Abraham

Read: Genesis 17:15-17,19, 21; 21:1-8; 22:1-19

Ask your child:

• Who was Isaac? Abraham’s promised son
• Why did God ask Abraham to sacrifice Isaac as a burnt offering? To test Abraham and reveal the quality of his faith.
• How did Abraham pass the test? By obeying everything God told him, demonstrating that he loved his God more than anything else.

Emphasize this principle: God is faithful to His people. Therefore, we should give Him first place in our lives.

Practice: 

• Praise God for keeping His promises.
• Demonstrate love for God by obeying His Word.
• Cultivate love for God through Bible study, prayer, and service.
• Display the character of God to others by keeping your promises.

Praise: “Seek Ye First”

God Makes a Promise to Abram

Read: Genesis 11:27–12:9

Ask your child:

• What did Abram worship before God called him? Idols
• What did God ask Abram to do? Leave his homeland and follow Him.
• What did God promise Abram? Land, seed, and blessing (see Gen. 12:1-3)

Emphasize this principle: God calls people to follow him. Therefore, we should trust Him and obey.

Practice:

• Trust God’s promises.
• Follow God by believing in His Son.
• Obey God even when it is difficult.

Prepare for next week: Genesis 16:1–6; 17:15–21; 18:1–15
