Enchanted Christmas Collection, Book 3
Larkspur Press
November 2017

Secrets, Sparks and Second Chances…a Heartwarming Holiday Romance

Seb Pierce isn’t exactly a cowboy, but after fifteen years on a ranch in Texas, he might as well be. And he’d do just about anything to keep the rancher who took him in so many years ago from losing his land…including returning to the wealthy roots he’s long since abandoned. Seb agrees to work for his stern grandfather for one year in return for an early draw on his inheritance. But he never expected the agreement to land him in a quirky small town in Iowa at Christmas-time, renovating a dilapidated theater…and running into a woman he never thought he’d see again. She might not remember him, but he remembers her.

After too many years away from her hometown—and too many failures to count—Leigh Renwycke is finally back in Maple Valley and living the stable life she used to wish for. If only she could shake the old restlessness that used to get her into trouble. When Seb Pierce waltzes into her world and begs for her help planning the theater’s holiday reopening, it could be the solution to her discontent. If she pulls it off, it might be enough to jumpstart a new career…and to prove once and for all that the new-and-improved Leigh is here to stay.

But between old secrets and new sparks, restoring a town treasure in time for Christmas may not be as easy as it seems…especially once Leigh learns the truth about Seb.
My Review: I love, love, love Melissa Tagg. I just absolutely LOVE everything she has ever written, including this darling novella. Who doesn't love a great Christmas love story?? Leigh and Seb captivated me from the very beginning. I love how Melissa Tagg takes her characters and makes them so real. I felt the internal struggle both Leigh and Seb were going through throughout the story. Both Leigh and Seb have things in their past to work out and watching them figure it out together is beautiful.

A wonderful mix of faith, love, and laughter, One Enchanted Noel is sure to enchant any reader. The Christmas setting just makes the story more magical. The feelings, emotions, and sparks between Leigh and Seb are fantastic and very well written. Overall, I absolutely adored this story and even though it's the last novella in the Enchanted Christmas collection, I was not lost at all. It did make me want to go read the rest of the series, though!
But as she becomes acquainted with her employer, she realizes the wealthy Mrs. Davenport has a strange tendency to be a bit light-fingered with other people’s trinkets. Gertrude is relieved when Mrs. Davenport decides to have a quiet summer away from the social scene–until the woman changes her mind in order to help a young socialite launch into society.

When Gertrude is caught in the act of trying to return one of the trinkets by Mrs. Sinclair, the mother of shipping magnate Harrison Sinclair, the woman jumps to an unfortunate conclusion.
My Review: I was so, so, so, so, SO excited when this story came out! I have been eagerly awaiting Gertrude's story since I was introduced to her in the first book, Behind the Scenes. It was everything I imagined it would be and more!

Gertrude's life with Mrs. Davenport is never dull. Gertrude is smart and funny. Her willingness to assist Mrs. Davenport in her many crazy endevears with fashion is most amusing. Harrison Sinclair is a strong male character. He is sure of himself and doesn't care what people think about him (or his crazy fashion sense). Their friendship is endearing. I love how clueless they both are about their feelings for each other. Watching them discover themselves and each other was sweet and amusing (as is Jen's customary style).

The message of the book is clear. As Gertrude and the others discover throughout the book, "God doesn't expect His children to live ordinary lives, but extraordinary ones." She also learned that you have to be "willing to give up living an ordinary life" and hand it over to God who can make that life extraordinary if we trust Him with it.

Overall, Jen Turano delivers another hilarious adventure, full of faith, fun, and a little romance. I highly recommend this book to anyone to loves a good clean book that will have you laughing til the very end.

My Review: I have never been disappointed with Dani's works. This book is no exception. I absolutely loved Blind Spot from beginning to end. I was quickly and completely wrapped up in the story and would have read it in one sitting if I didn't have a newborn to take care of!

I absolutely loved jumping back into the lives of Declan and Tanner. Seeing their relationship change and grow in the first two books, I was certainly eager to find out what happened in their own story. The tension between the two characters is undeniable. I loved learning more about each character and was surprised by some of the things I learned. It definitely made for a more interesting story. Their faith, though, was inspiring. Both characters have a firm grasp on the role God plays in their lives. I wish, oh how I wish I had that kind of faith!

The story is laid out masterfully. I was fully engaged throughout the entire story and hated getting to the end. I wanted more! I love how Dani also incorporates characters from her other stories in a way that allows us to stay connected to them, but still focuses on the main characters and plot. And talk about SHOCK FACTOR and CLIFF HANGER in the EXTREME! No, I won't tell you what happened.. I don't want to spoil it for you! But I honestly never saw it coming. Now, I have to patiently wait for the next book to come out!

Overall, I loved this book, as I knew I would. Dani Pettrey books are full of suspense, romance, and a hefty dose of faith. If that's what you're looking for in a story, you can't go wrong with any of Dani's works. I highly recommend you add Blind Spot to your reading list!
The Walker Family, Book 4
Larkspur Press
9/2017
9780997964219

Bear McKinley’s past refuses to let go.
Ten years ago, Bear gave up everything—his freedom and his reputation—for his mess of a family. But after years of distance and too many attempts at starting over, he finally has a new life doing noble work in Brazil . . . until his past catches up to him once again. Suddenly he finds himself back in Maple Valley, charged with the care of his missing brother’s children, convinced he’s out of second chances to make his life count. And yet, with every day that passes, these kids, this quirky town and the woman he never stopped missing help patch the holes in his heart. Maybe this is the fresh start he’s been longing for all along. But as his newfound hope grows, so does the mystery surrounding his brother’s activities—and when the threat reaches into the lives of those he loves, it’s clear he can’t run away this time.

Fear holds Raegan’s future captive.
Raegan Walker is fine. She’s happy working a slew of part-time jobs, still living in her childhood bedroom and rarely venturing from her hometown. At least, that’s what she tells everyone . . . and herself. But she can’t help wondering what might’ve happened if she hadn’t abandoned her art so many years ago—and if Bear McKinley had never left. When Bear returns and she’s commissioned for a painting that just might revive her artistic ambition all in one week, it’s time to finally reach for more than fine. But doing so means facing the fears that have held her back all this time, including admitting the secret she’s kept from Bear and her family. With her dream and her heart on the line, how much will Raegan have to risk to finally chase her happy ending?
My Review:
I am SO, SO, SO sad that the Walker series has ended…but BOY what a way to end it! I absolutely loved this story from start to finish! Melissa pulls you in from the very beginning with Bear’s emotional turmoil and doesn’t let you go until the very end. I enjoyed every single page!

I definitely related to Reagan’s character throughout this story. Trying to find the words to describe what she’s dealing with, without giving the story away is tough. The secret she has kept from everyone is something many people deal with, including myself. Bear’s story is just heartbreaking! I can’t even imagine going through what he did. Their relationship had me happy, sad, frustrated, and FINALLY happy again right along with them. (By the way, I think it’s one of the things Melissa does best, makes a character’s emotions and feelings come alive inside the reader!)

The messages portrayed throughout this book, especially to Reagan, hit me on such a personal level. Dealing with fear, anxiety, and feelings of not being enough are something that I have to overcome regularly. As John tells Bear, “You either believe God can redeem your pastyou’re your regrets and your pain…or you don’t.” Kinda sums up the lesson I learned nicely.

Overall, this is definitely a book and series I will re-read forever and ever. I loved them all that much! Melissa Tagg is an excellent author and I look foreward to reading many more wonderful stories from her!
Ladies of Harper Station, #2
Bethany House, A Baker Publishing Group
June 2017
ISBN

Grace Mallory is tired of running, of hiding. But when an old friend sends an after-hours telegraph transmission warning Grace that the man who has hunted her for nearly a year has discovered her location, she fears she has no choice. She can't let the villain she believes responsible for her father's death release his wrath in Harper's Station, the town that has sheltered her and blessed her with the dearest friends she's ever known.

Amos Bledsoe prefers bicycles to horses and private conversations over the telegraph wire to social gatherings with young ladies who see him as nothing more than an oddity. His telegraph companion, the mysterious Miss G, listens eagerly to his ramblings every night and delights him with tales all her own. For months, their friendship--dare he believe, courtship?--has fed his hope that he has finally found the woman God intended for him. Yet when he takes the next step to meet her in person, he discovers her life is in peril, and Amos must decide if he can shed the cocoon of his quiet nature to become the hero Grace requires.
My Review:
I loved, loved, loved being back in Harper’s Station with some of my favorite women! Karen Witemeyer writes another refreshing book with unexpected heroes and heroines, plot twists you won’t see coming, and a sweet romance that captures you from beginning to end.

This book is refreshing because the hero and heroine are not your typical male/female leads. Amos Bledsoe is not your typical male lead. Sure, he’s confident, intelligent, sweet, funny, and kind… but he’s not in the least broad shouldered, big muscled, or “macho man.” I loved him more for the fact that he didn’t bemoan this fact; he accepted what God gave him and that, to me, makes him very attractive. Grace Mallory obviously agrees with me! Her character is strong in a reserved kind of way. She is loyal, funny, caring, and witty. I loved getting to know them through their “instant messages” on the Western Union telegraph line!

I also loved the fact that they both accepted their limitations, and relied on God and others to do what they knew they couldn’t do on their own. Neither one of them tried to do more than what they were capable of doing. They prayed, they planned, and they involved people who could help them. During that time, they had an old fashioned courtship. Amos’ rushing to Harper’s Station because he knew Grace was in trouble is all sorts of sweet. He didn’t even know what kind of trouble there would be! And let’s not forget about Helen…broken, angry, and bitter Helen (don’t worry, I won’t give anything away!).

If you couldn’t tell, I really, really, really LOVED this story. My heart was on the line from beginning to end. I couldn’t wait to see what happened between Grace and Amos, I enjoyed catching up with Emma, Malachi, Victoria, Ben, and the rest of Harper’s Station, and I was not disappointed at the plot: fast moving, romantic, and faith filled. It’s a great book! I promise you’ll enjoy it.
My Review:
A Cowboy Unmatched by Karen Witemeyer: I was first introduced to the Archer Brothers in Short-Straw Bride and Stealing the Preacher, so I was very excited to get back to their family in this story. Karen Witemeyer did not disappoint. I love her writing style and the fact that she could condense what could be a novel into a novella without losing quality is amazing. Neill and Clara’s story is swift, sweet, and action packed from beginning to end. It’s a great start to the novella collection!

<an i="" match="" unforseen=""> by Regina Jennings: What a unique story! I’ve not yet read a novel by Regina Jennings, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wasn’t disappointed! I wish this was a full length novel because there is so much more the author could have gotten into. Two very vulnerable people meet, overcome what seems insurmountable, and fall in love… all in the space of 100+ pages. The author does a great job, though, of creating such a believable story in such a short space of time. I was very impressed!

No Match for Love by Carol Cox: Even though this is not my favorite story of the collection, I still enjoyed it. The mystery around the ranch was enough to keep me turning page after page. I really think this might have been better as a full length novel, but I do enjoy how the story ended with every wrapped up in a nice, neat bow.

Meeting Her Match by Mary Connealy: This is such a sweet story. Like all of Mary Connealy’s books, I expected witty rapport, love that almost never takes the easy way in coming, and faith that grows throughout the story. I wasn’t disappointed. I just wish it were longer! Mary did an exceptional job of getting the point of the story across without seeming rushed and I know that’s got to be hard to do in a novella!

Overall, I highly enjoyed this sweet collection of novellas. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a quick, romantic read with a good dose of faith mixed in.
Start of a Delightful New Series from Historical Romance Author Jen Turano

Miss Permilia Griswold may have been given the opportunity of a debut into New York high society, but no one warned her she wasn’t guaranteed to “take.” After spending the last six years banished to the wallflower section of the ballroom, she’s finally putting her status on the fringes of society to good use by penning anonymous society gossip columns under the pseudonym “Miss Quill.”

Mr. Asher Rutherford has managed to maintain his status as a reputable gentleman of society despite opening his own department store. While pretending it’s simply a lark to fill his time, he has quite legitimate reasons for needing to make his store the most successful in the country.

When Permilia overhears a threat against the estimable Mr. Rutherford, she’s determined to find and warn the man. Disgruntled at a first meeting that goes quite poorly and results in Asher not believing her, she decides to take matters into her own hands, never realizing she’ll end up at risk as well.

As Asher and Permilia are forced to work together and spend time away from the spotlight of society, perhaps there’s more going on behind the scenes than they ever could have anticipated. . . .

My Review: This was such a delightfully refreshing read. I was intrigued with the “wallflower” aspect of the story since we don’t often get to read stories regarding ladies on the fringe of society. With Jen Turano’s customary wit, hilarious dialogue, and daring plot lines, this book is sure to please all of her fans.

The characters were so different from any that I’ve read in her previous novels. Permilia Griswold is not what one would consider a “high society miss.” Her charm lies within the fact that she knows she’s not ever going to attain a proper lady status, and she doesn’t care. I also liked Asher Rutherford immediately. He is different from any of her other heros, but just as charming and endearing. Their courtship follows what Jen is known for and is extremely entertaining. The ending took me by surprise, though! (I won’t spoil it for you, don’t worry!)

Sprinkled liberally with a message of God’s will and timing, this book is entertaining from beginning to end. I highly recommend it to any of Jen’s fans, and anyone who enjoys a light-hearted, hilarious historical Christian romance.

(P.S. I can’t wait until November for Gertrude’s story!)

After spending her childhood in an orphanage, Millie Longfellow is determined to become the best nanny the East Coast has ever seen. Unfortunately, her enthusiasm for her job tends to bring about situations that have employers looking askance at her methods. After her most recent dismissal, Millie is forced to return yet again to an employment agency.

Everett Mulberry has suddenly and quite unexpectedly found himself responsible for three children he barely knows. Attempting fatherhood while also pacifying the less-than-thrilled socialite he intends to marry is made even more complicated when the children scare off every nanny he hires. About to depart for Newport, Rhode Island, for the summer, he’s desperate for competent childcare.

At wit’s end with both Millie and Everett, the employment agency gives them one last chance—with each other. Everett is wary of Millie’s penchant for disaster, and she’s not entirely keen on another snobby, grumpy employer, but they’re both out of options. As Millie falls in love with her mischievous charges and tries to stay one step ahead of them, Everett is more focused on achieving the coveted status of society’s upper echelons. As he investigates the suspicious circumstances surrounding the children’s parents’ death, will it take the loss of those he loves to learn whose company he truly wants for the rest of his life?

My Review: This book was laugh out loud funny, action packed, and kept me “in good company” throughout its entirety. I loved catching up Abigail, Lucetta, and hearing more about Oliver and Harriet. While the plot didn’t have quite the dramatic flair I expected it to, it was still fast moving and entertaining.

I loved Millie from the moment I met her in After A Fashion. Her charming innocence, faith in herself and the Lord, and her eagerness to learn and impart knowledge is endearing and one of a kind. She is the perfect match for the presumptuous and sometimes arrogant Everett Mulberry. Millie’s interactions with him frequently make him question everything he’s known his entire life. He’s been opened up to a whole new world, essentially, because of his crazy nanny!

With the antics of Rose, Thaddeus, and Elizabeth, along with the plotting and scheming of Abigail, this book is entertaining from beginning to end. I highly recommend any of Jen Turano’s works if you’re looking for light-hearted fun and entertainment, with a touch of faith. Jen’s unique way of telling a story with witty characters, crazy antics, and faith filled messages keeps me coming back for more.
Christiansen Family, Book 6
Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.
2016
ISBN: 9781414378466

Owen Christiansen has been in a downward spiral since an injury ended his NHL career. But a job on an Alaskan crabbing boat offers a fresh start . . . maybe even a shot at romance with Elise “Scotty” McFlynn, the captain’s daughter.

Used to being one of the guys, to never relying on anyone, Scotty doesn’t believe in happily ever after—especially with someone like Owen. Her instinct is confirmed when Casper Christiansen arrives to drag his prodigal brother home, bringing with him a truckload of family drama—and even worse, the news that Casper is wanted for questioning in connection to a crime back in Minnesota.

But Owen is more than the sum of his mistakes, a truth both he and Scotty discover when she escorts both brothers to Deep Haven as part of her new job on the Anchorage police force. Thrust into an unfamiliar world of family, faith, and fresh starts, Scotty begins to see potential for a happy ending . . . if she’s brave enough to embrace it.
My Review: I don’t even know where to begin in reviewing this fantastic book… From start to finish, I was caught hook, line, and sinker. What I like best about Susan May Warren’s books are the depth of emotions, love, loyalty, faith and family dynamics that make the characters jump off the page. They seem so real (I secretly want to be a part of the Christiansen clan!).

Oh, Owen! Watching him struggle to accept that grace that God has given him so freely through the book is so hard! I just wanted to hug him. Warren did an amazing job showing us how complicated and messy his life was, giving us glimpses of the “old” and “new” Owen. Then there’s Scotty. Boy, she is one complicated woman! But her fierce loyalty to Owen is exactly what’s needed to begin an awesome romance.

I’m so glad that Owen’s story was last. I don’t think Susan May Warren could have ended an amazing series any better (but I really hope this isn’t the end!). She brought the prodigal home, restored the family relationships that were broken, and most importantly taught each character about embracing their past, their faith, and putting their trust in God. I loved this series and would highly recommend it to anyone!
Do opposites really attract? John and Nora might just be the perfect match. Find out in True to You, book one in Becky Wade's new series! Genealogist and historical village owner Nora Bradford has decided that burying her nose in her work and her books is far safer than romance in the here and now. Former Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient John Lawson is a modern-day man, usually 100 percent focused on the present. But when he's diagnosed with an inherited condition, he's forced to dig into the secrets of his past and his adoption as an infant, enlisting Nora to help him uncover the identity of his birth mother. Finding the answers they're seeking will test the limits of their identity, their faith, and their devotion to one another.

My Review: Have you ever felt like you’re life has stalled? Or that your foundation had been knocked right out from under your feet? Well that’s exactly what the characters in Becky Wade’s latest novel feel like! (And I don’t blame them one bit.) This sweetly flowing novel introduces us to the middle Bradford sister, Nora, and former Navy SEAL John Lawson. With a cast of secondary characters that provide levity to a story that has tendency to be more serious, Becky Wade writes another hit. (Really, I can’t wait to delve further into the Bradford sisters lives!)

Nora is a woman after my own heart. She is sweet, quirky, and charming. Her love for life, her family, and the Lord is evident in everything she does and says. She’s a “fixer.” John Lawson couldn’t be more Nora’s opposite. As a former Navy SEAL, he is strong, quiet, and confident. What I love most about these characters, though, is that Becky Wade brought out their flaws and imperfections almost immediately. As they begin to get to know one another and fight their attraction, I could see the struggles they faced both internally and externally.

What I also love most about this novel is how REAL Becky Wade makes their struggle. I can relate to every feeling, good and bad, these characters face as they come to terms with what God is doing in their lives. It makes the story 10 times more believable. And let me tell you, that curveball Becky Wade throws at you at the end… I didn’t see that coming! Overall, I love Becky Wade. I love her writing style. Her characters and stories are always on point. I promise, Becky Wade fans will not be disappointed by True to You.
Connealy Combines Western Action and Charming Historical Romance

The Boden clan thought their problems had ended with the death of a dangerous enemy, but have they truly uncovered the real plot to take their New Mexico ranch? Rancher Justin Boden is now in charge. He is normally an unshakable and rugged man, but with his brother, Cole, shot and in mortal danger, even a tough man faces doubts. And it doesn't help that Angie DuPree, the assistant to the doctor trying to save Cole, is as distracting a woman as Justin ever laid eyes on.

With her and the doc's timely skills, Cole looks to be on the mend, and Justin and the rest of the Bodens can turn their attention back to the dangers facing them. It's clear now that everything that's occurred is part of a much bigger plot that could date back to a decades-old secret. Can they uncover all the pieces before danger closes in on them, or is the threat to the ranch even bigger than any of the Bodens could imagine?

My Review: This book LITERALLY picks up where No Way Out ended (therefore, I recommend reading the first book in the series before this one). From the moment Cole is shot, tensions run high. There are a myriad of dangers facing the Boden clan and Connealy had me gripping my seat, hoping to uncover the danger but knowing there’s another book in the series so it won’t end with this one!

In No Way Out we meet confident and rugged Justin Boden who understands running a ranch and remains unshakeable. Long Time Gone shows us another side of Justin. You can immediately sense that his brother’s injury really shook his faith in himself and those around him. The only part of his character that seems unshaken is his protective streak. Enter Angie DuPree! It’s hilarious to me to watch Justin bumble through his “courtship” of Angie and it definitely helped to tone down the seriousness of the story.

Their faith in God, loyalty to their ranch and family, and love for one other shines through every page of the book as we watch Angie and Justin grow together, Cole heal, and the Bodens grow closer together to face the dangers that seem to be surrounding them. From start to finish, Mary Connealy delivers another action packed historical romance that is sure to please everyone!
Then Came You
The Bradford Sisters
March 2017

A leather-bound journal. A single father. A woman in pursuit of freedom.

Garner Bradford, heir to the troubled Bradford Shipping empire, doesn’t know much about babies. But he’s going to have to learn fast because he’s just become a single father to his newborn daughter. As he confesses through his journal entries, he’s not entirely sure how to keep a newborn alive, whether or not he’ll ever patch together his shattered heart, or how to forgive himself for his mistakes.

Career girl Kathleen Burke is wholly uninterested in settling down. She has big dreams, and none of them include Garner and his small hometown in Washington State. Yet she can’t seem to get her handsome boss out of her head or her heart. There’s something extraordinarily tempting about his beautifully sad green eyes. . . .

Told through journal entries, phone conversations, and letters, Then Came You is a unique and heart-stirring romance novella.
My Review: I loved the uniqueness of this story! It’s written entirely in journal entries, notes, and phone conversations, which I highly enjoyed. Becky Wade really broke down the characters feelings about the situations in their lives that we don’t normally get to read about. Following Garner’s love life and faith journey was not always an enjoyable experience, but his honesty was refreshing. I really enjoyed this novella! I would definitely recommend reading this novella before you begin the Bradford Sisters Series.
Becky’s a California native who attended Baylor University, met and married a Texan, and settled in Dallas. She published historical romances for the general market before putting her career on hold for several years to care for her three children. When God called her back to writing, Becky knew He meant for her to turn her attention to Christian fiction. She loves writing funny, modern, and inspirational contemporary romance! She’s the Carol Award, INSPY Award, and Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award winning author of My Stubborn Heart, the Porter Family series, and the Bradford Sisters Romance series.
They are funny, mysterious, and always provide a nice lesson I need to learn! These two are no exception. I decided to review both The Boden Birthright and No Way Up together since the novella is a precursor to the novel. Sorry for the long post!
The Boden Birthright | The Cimarron Legacy, Book 0.5 | Bethany House | May 2016 | 9781441228789

A lonely father whose grief almost cost him his son
A feisty young frontier’s woman who wants the son and may have to take the city slicker father to get him.
A little boy who needs a home.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING THIS NOVELLA BEFORE READING NO WAY UP. Ok, so you don’t have to, but it provides the background story for the parents featured in No Way Up, as we as an explanation as to why the legacy is so important to Chance. It’s a quick read, with Mary’s customary witty banter and I loved it!
No Way Up | Cimarron Legacy, Book 1 | Bethany House, A Baker Publishing Group | July 2016 | 9780764211812

When Cimarron ranch patriarch Chance Boden is caught in an avalanche, the quick actions of hired hand Heath Kincaid save him. Badly injured, Chance demands that his will be read and its conditions be enforced immediately.

Without anyone else to serve as a witness, Heath is pressed into reading the will. If Justin, Sadie, and Cole Boden don’t live and work at home for the entire year, the ranch will go to their low-down cousin Mike.

Then Heath discovers the avalanche was a murder attempt, and more danger might follow. Deeply involved with the family, Heath’s desire to protect Sadie goes far beyond friendship. The danger keeps them close together, and their feelings grow until being apart is the last thing on their minds.

My Review: What can I even say about this book to make you understand how much I loved it? Mary Connealy takes her books to a whole new level. While the book still provides us with the customary wit and banter we have come to expect in a Connealy novel, there is an underlying seriousness that is, to me, new and exciting.

The interactions between Heath and Boden clan kept me in stitches. He certainly has a brotherly relationship with Justin and Cole! The romance between Sadie and Heath was very well spaced between the mystery surrounding the avalanche and the danger lurking in the shadows.

Overall, the legacy of love and faith Chance and Veronica Boden left their children is beautiful and I hope we see the Boden clan come together over the next few books! I can’t wait to read more!

Blacklisted in the photography business when one of her shots causes a scandal, but desperate to somehow continue in the profession, Avery Tate answered an ad for a crime scene photographer. She fully expected to be laughed at, but crime scene analyst Parker Mitchell hired her outright–taking time to teach her the trade. Now she’s half in love with the man, half terrified to even acknowledge her feelings, and completely hooked on the job–until the next crime hits too close to home.

Avery attends the gallery opening of a new photography exhibit to support her best friend who modeled for the show. The only image of her, though, is a chilling photo of her posing dead. Only the photographer insists he didn’t take the shot, and Avery’s friend can’t be found.

As Avery and Parker, along with Parker’s brilliant friends, begin to dig into the mystery, they find themselves face-to-face with a dangerous, relentless, and deadly threat which could endanger them all.
My Review: Dani Pettrey adds another gripping novel to her Chesapeake Valor series with Still Life. From beginning to end, this book keeps you guessing. Just when I thought I had it figured out, a new clue would surface and I'd have to reassess. I absolutely LOVED that about this book.

I'm so glad I got to catch back up with Griffin, Finley, Kate, Declan, and Tanner but I loved Avery and Parker's story. At the beginning, we see Avery and Parker both struggling with things in their past as well as their feelings for each other. In true Pettrey style, they are caught on a wild ride that brings them closer to each other and in the end, to love.

I loved that the focus of the book, besides the mystery and romance (of course), was on Avery's struggle to let go of her past. How many of you have been there? I know I have. Once we become new creations in Christ, our past is just that - the past. Avery knew God had forgiven her, wiped her sins and past clean, but she struggled with forgiving herself.

If you like thrilling stories, with spine tingling moments (even at the end..), a dash of romance, and of course a happy ending, Dani Pettrey's Still Life will not disappoint.
Did you miss me? I ended up taking more of a break than I anticipated, sorry about that! My life turned super hectic at the end of 2016 and I got on this Kristen Ashley kick that consumed my life (she is not a Christian author, for those of you who are curious).

So, what has been going on with me in 2017? Well, the most notable moment so far this year: THE HUBS AND I ARE EXPECTING OUR FIRST CHILD!!! I cannot even begin to tell you how excited we are. We find out the gender next Friday (well, I should say Saturday). I have a feeling it's a girl, but the hubs is FIRM on it being a boy. We'll see!!
I've been thinking about what I can do to improve my blog and keep my readers interested, as well as myself from getting burned out. When I come up with that answer, I'll let you know! In the meantime, I've got some books in the line up to read and review. I've been brainstorming other ideas for posts and hopefully will have some other content for you soon! Keep yours eyes and ears open, folks. As a friend of mine says (every year), "BIG THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN 2017!"

My Review: I have loved every book in the Appalachian Blessings series, so far. They are poignant stories that reach down deep and touch your heart. While A Tapestry of Secrets took me longer to really get into than the other stories, I ended up loving it just as much!

I enjoyed catching up with Perla, Sadie, and the rest of the family. Perla plays a big part in Ella’s story, though she is silent through most of it. Ella is a wonderful character. I felt such a connection to her struggle to accept herself as worthy, beautiful, and forgiven. At the point in the story where she had three beaus, I had already chosen who I wanted her go for. Seth provided a strong, silent support for Ella, following God’s prompting in his relationship with her.

Sadie’s quest for her biological father provided a nice side story, and added to the importance of the message. Sometimes, in order to embrace what God has for your life, you have to let go of the past. Ella, Sadie, and Perla all struggle with this throughout the book. The verse that kind of brings home the point to me is found in Acts chapter 2: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Overall, while it took me several chapters to get hooked to this story, I was caught well and good once it happened. I recommend this sweet, soul stirring story.
The Hesitant Heiress
The Everstone Chronicles, Book 1
Whitaker House
8/1/2014
ISBN-13: 9781629112299

After being unjustly expelled from the Boston Conservatory of Music, Amaryllis Brigham sees her dreams of founding a music academy disappearing before her very eyes. Now the only way to achieve her goal comes with high stakes for someone set on avoiding men as much as possible: marry within the year to inherit her grandmother’s fortune. Amaryllis reluctantly takes part in her aunt’s society, intent on getting to the west coast on her own… and without a husband.

Despite her own misgivings, she soon finds herself falling in love with the most unlikely of men, Nathan Everstone, whose father not only had a part in her expulsion, but whose ominous presence has haunted her dreams for a decade since her mother’s tragic death. Nathan turns out to be much more than he seems and everything she never knew she wanted. But just as everything Amaryllis has recently hoped for comes to fruition, it all falls apart when she finds that the real culprit who has been “managing her life” isn’t who she thought at all.
My Review: I have said it before, and I’ll say it again: It’s rare to find an author who can write in the first person point of view well and keep my attention. I don’t know why, but I find it hard to read a one sided story. That being said, Dawn Crandall is a master! I was totally absorbed in Amaryllis’ and Nathan’s affairs from beginning to end. Dawn Crandall does an excellent job of giving enough dialogue and expressions of the characters that Amaryllis is involved with that it’s not at all one sided (well, it is, but I didn’t feel that it was!)

While I could have wished for more interaction between Nathan and Amaryllis before discovering their love for one another, I was not disappointed in the relationship trials they had to endure. Amaryllis’ character is full of contradictions: she is strong, yet vulnerable; happy, yet experiences deep sadness; trusting, yet not easily. In effect, I LOVED HER. She behaved exactly as one would expect, based on her circumstances and what’s she had to endure in her life. Watching Nathan through Amaryllis’ eyes gave me quite a good notion of his character, and watching him fight for her was so romantic!

Amaryllis’ biggest problem in her life is trust. Based on all she’s had to endure, she finds the motives of people… really people in general hard to trust. She doesn’t take people into her confidence easily. The message of the story centers on Amaryllis learning to trust God, and in effect, trust the plans and people He has for her. It’s a beautiful message woven masterfully into a beautiful story.

Overall, I highly enjoyed this wonderful story and can’t wait to read more in the Everstone Chronicles.
A graduate of Taylor University with a degree in Christian Education, and a former bookseller at Barnes & Noble, Dawn Crandall didn’t begin writing until 2010 when her husband found out about her long-buried dream of writing a book. Without a doubt about someday becoming published, he let her quit her job in 2010 in order to focus on writing The Hesitant Heiress. It didn’t take her long to realize that writing books was what she was made to do. Dawn is represented by Joyce Hart of Hartline Literary. Apart from writing books, Dawn is also a first-time mom to a precious little boy (born March 2014) and also serves with her husband in a pre-marriage mentor program at their local church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Dawn is a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers, secretary for the Indiana ACFW Chapter (Hoosier Ink), and associate member of the Great Lakes ACFW Chapter. The Everstone Chronicles is Dawn’s first series with Whitaker House. All three books composing the series were semifinalists in ACFW’s prestigious Genesis Writing Contest, the third book going on to become a finalist in 2013.
It caught my attention because I know I've made that statement before, either to my husband or to myself. So, I thought "why not?" Let me tell you how happy I am that I picked up this book. Rhonda Stoppe is an excellent author. Her conversational tone throughout the book made me feel at ease, even during the topics that pricked at my consciousness. I felt like I was sitting down with my girlfriends for a nice chat every time I picked up this book.

While a lot of the topics addressed in this book I haven't experienced in this stage in my marriage (2 years in September!), I will definitely read this book and refer to it again throughout our marriage. The wisdom I've gleaned from it's pages is immeasurable. I could have little orange sticky note tabs all over the book, but I tried to contain myself! Here are a few of the points that really stuck out to me:

"The key to having an all-out love for your husband lies in how well you love God." (pg. 16)
"The first insight into building a love that lasts is to take your focus off of how much you want to be loved by your husband." (Now, I'll admit, I had to really let that soak before I could appreciate it's truth - pg. 39)
"When you are selfishly devoted to yourself rather than to God and others - in this case, your husband - you will resist giving of yourself to him selflessly." (pg. 111)
"When you commit to seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness, you will find contentment and peace in your marriage--and life." (pg. 136)
"It is not enough to merely read the Bible and pray for a marriage free from conflict." (pg. 143)
Lastly, the prayer for her husband she wrote on page 187 is a beautiful model prayer that I wouldn't hesitate to say over my hubby regularly.

Overall, whether you're in your first years or in the thick of your marriage, it's never too early or too late to read this fantastic book.
If My Husband Would Change, I'd Be Happy: And Other Myths Wives Believe (Harvest House, August 2015)

Like most brides on their wedding day, you no doubt were filled with love for your husband and the hope of a happy life together.

But perhaps today, as the realities of life together have settled in, those happy expectations are going unfulfilled. And it's tempting to think, "If only my husband would change, I'd be happy."

That myth is but one of many that Rhonda Stoppe dispels in her easy-to-read exploration of what it takes to experience a truly happy marriage. In the process, she addresses such important topics as

-understanding your husband's need for your unconditional respect

-rekindling the love that drew you to your husband in the first place

-refusing to believe the lie that you'd be happier married to someone else

-learning to be content in the midst of financial struggles

-thinking about sex from a biblical worldview

If you desire to rekindle the love and hope you felt on your wedding day, this book will go a long way toward making that dream come true.

Contains discussion questions and personal reflections at the end of each chapter.

A Flight of Arrows

The Pathfinders #2
WaterBrook Press (Penguin Random House)
April 19, 2016
ISBN-10: 1601427344
ISBN-13: 978-1601427342

Hearts are divided.
Loyalties will be tested.
The fates of two families hang in the balance.

Twenty years ago, during the devastating fall of Fort William Henry in 1757, a young Redcoat named Reginald Aubrey stole a new-born boy--the lighter-skinned of Oneida twins--and raised him as his own.

No one connected to Reginald escaped unscathed from this crime. Not his adopted daughter Anna. Not Stone Thrower, the Native American father determined to get his son back. Not Two Hawks, William's twin brother separated since birth, living in the shadow of his absence and hoping to build a future with Anna. Nor Lydia, who longs for Reginald to be free from his self-imposed emotional prison and embrace God's forgiveness--and her love.

Now William, whose identity has been shattered after discovering the truth of his birth, hides in the ranks of an increasingly aggressive British army. The Redcoats prepare to attack frontier New York, and the Continentals, aided by Two Hawks and the Oneida warriors, rally to defend it. As the Revolutionary War penetrates the Mohawk Valley, two families separated by culture but united by love and faith must find a way to reclaim the son marching toward them in the ranks of their enemies.
My Review: If any of you follow me on Goodreads, you know that it normally does not take me long to read a good book (2-3 days). There were several reasons it was hard for me to read this book, none of which had ANYTHING to do with the book itself. A Flight of Arrows is powerful, compelling, and intense. The story is heart-wrenching and had me in its grips from beginning to end. This is not a story for the faint of heart or those of you looking for a fun, light-hearted read.

Lori does an excellent job of describing the war between the British and Americans. She describes the scenery, emotions, and battles in vivid detail (without being too graphic). She also excels in keeping us informed on what is going on both with the menfolk and womenfolk involved in the story, even though they are not together for most of it. This story invokes a powerful feeling of the fear, anxiety, and anger present during the Revolutionary War.

The characters made the story. Lydia, Anna Catherine, Two Hawks, William, Stone Thrower, Reginald and Good Voice come together in an amazing way, and you can see the work of the Lord in each of their lives. The heartache, joys, disappointments, fear, and anger each character feels is gripping and raw and powerful. My heart swelled with emotion for each blow these characters took, and cried in joy with each moment of happiness they were rewarded with. Lori made the characters come to life in my mind with each page.

Now, the reason I had such a hard time reading this book is because of the message. It hit home FOR REAL Y’ALL. Each of these characters had to make choices that would affect the rest of their lives, for the better or worse. The paths we walk are not always clear, as each character comes to realize, but if we ask the Lord for guidance in earnest, He will direct our paths. Two Hawks says it best, “Life is a blessing, but it is also a testing. Take the one as you do the other and trust Him who allows all.”

Overall, I absolutely LOVED this powerful, emotionally challenging story. I cannot wait to read more from the Pathfinders series.
No Other Will Do
A Ladies of Harper Station Novel
Bethany House, June 2016
ISBN-13: 9780764212819

Men are optional. That's the credo Emma Chandler's suffragette aunts preached and why she started a successful women's colony in Harper's Station, Texas. But when an unknown assailant tries repeatedly to drive them out, Emma admits they might need a man after all. A man who can fight--and she knows just the one.

Malachi Shaw finally earned the respect he craved by becoming an explosives expert for the railroad. Yet when Emma's plea arrives, he bolts to Harper's Station to repay the girl who once saved his life. Only she's not a girl any longer. She's a woman with a mind of her own and a smile that makes a man imagine a future he doesn't deserve.

As the danger intensifies, old feelings grow and deepen, but Emma and Mal will need more than love to survive.

My Review: Karen Witemeyer writes another engaging, romantically fantastic story! I loved it from beginning to end. It will pull at your heart strings; make you laugh, and keep you hooked until the very end. I love the idea of “women’s colony,” and I fell in love with all the women at Harper’s Station. The spunk and determination they showed in the face of danger and conflict made for some exciting moments.

Emma Chandler is a woman that I would love to meet. Her compassion for others (especially women in need), enthusiasm for whatever she does, and her humble faith makes her an engaging and unique woman. I also loved the fact that even though she sided with the Women’s Suffrage movement, she still saw the value of men, especially Malachi Shaw. Malachi Shaw is a man with many hurts haunting him. It causes him to hold people at arm’s length, only creating surface relationships with the people he encounters. I can understand that and empathize. I loved watching their relationship grow. Even after ten years, you could feel the connection they had coming through the pages. Karen Witemeyer provides a host of side characters, and gives just information about them to intrigue without encroaching on the main story.

I loved the message Mrs. Witemeyer wove expertly into this story. Psalm 18 says that the Lord is our rock and our strength. Both Emma and Mal learn, through the trials they are face that all they need to do is cry out to Him and he will deliver them. Watching them struggle to trust God with their problems is something we can all relate to.

Overall, I find this story enchanting. I absolutely loved it and I hope Mrs. Witemeyer will write more stories about the ladies at Harper’s Station.
Read my reviews of the other books in the Summer Harbor series.

My review: When I first picked this book up, I had the same thought some of you probably did: I really hope this isn’t a book about a flight female who can’t make up her mind! BOY, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Can you imagine losing 7 months of your life *just like that*! Denise Hunter captures your attention from the very beginning and creates a compelling story.

I enjoyed being back in Summer Harbor with Beau, Eden, and Aunt Trudy. I really enjoyed getting to know Zac more, as well. I was immediately drawn to his vulnerability where Lucy is concerned and his quiet strength of character. Lucy’s concussion and memory loss make her an extremely vulnerable character. I was worried that because of her fear of her memory never returning, she would be whiney and that would make me not like her. I was pleasantly surprised! Lucy, though her fear and vulnerability were a big part of her story, was a strong and feisty woman! I loved how the author brought them together and gave us glimpses of their pasts, which made me appreciate their present.

The message of the story is simple, yet strong. God never promised our lives would be easy. Both Zac and Lucy have to work through their troubles to embrace their second chance. As Eden points out to Lucy, ”Life will always have troubles. It’s what shapes and molds us and makes us into the people He wants us to be.” I could also relate to Lucy’s struggle with her past. It’s hard to let go of something that hurt you so deeply. She didn’t realize how it was affecting her until God brought it to light.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story of second chances at love, letting go of the past, and embracing the troubles God brings us as he shapes us into what He wants us to be.
Denise Hunter is the internationally published bestselling author of more than 20 books, including Dancing with Fireflies and The Convenient Groom. She has won The Holt Medallion Award, The Reader's Choice Award, The Foreword Book of the Year Award, and is a RITA finalist.

Denise writes heartwarming, small-town love stories. Her readers enjoy the experience of falling in love vicariously through her characters and can expect a happily-ever-after sigh as they close the pages of her books.

In 1996, inspired by the death of her grandfather, Denise began her first book, writing while her children napped. Two years later it was published, and she's been writing ever since. Her husband says he inspires all her romantic stories, but Denise insists a good imagination helps too!

When Denise isn't orchestrating love lives on the written page, she enjoys traveling with her family, drinking coffee, and playing drums. Denise makes her home in Indiana where she and her husband will soon be facing an empty nest.
Dawn at Emberwilde
A Treasures of Surrey Novel, Book 2
(Thomas Nelson, May 2016)

Isabel Creston never dared to dream that love could be hers. Now, at the edge of a forest filled with dark secrets, she faces a fateful choice between love and duty.

For as long as she can remember, beautiful and free-spirited Isabel has strained against the rules and rigidity of the Fellsworth School in the rolling English countryside. No longer a student, Isabel set her sights on a steady role as a teacher at the school, a safe yet stifling establishment that would enable her to care for her younger sister Lizzie, who was left in her care after her father's death.

The unexpected arrival of a stranger with news of unknown relatives turns Isabel's small, predictable world upside down, sweeping her and her young charge into a labyrinth of intrigue and hidden motives.

At her new family's invitation, Isabel and Lizzie relocate to Emberwilde, a sprawling estate adjacent to a vast, mysterious wood rife with rumors and ominous folklore---along with whispers of something far more sinister. Perhaps even more startling, two handsome men begin pursuing Isabel, forcing her to learn the delicate dance between attraction, the intricate rules of courtship, and the hopes of her heart.

At Emberwilde Isabel will discover that the key to unlocking the mystery of her past may also open the door to her future and security. But first she must find it---in the depths of Emberwilde Forest.

My Review: This story put me in mind of Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. It has a Gothic feel to it, with talk of ghosts, fairies, and a "haunted" forest. Sarah E. Ladd writes an intriguing story, with a plot that is ripe with surprises. I wanted to visit Emberwilde in all it's grandeur and the Emberwilde Forest (a.k.a. the Black Wood Forest) in all it's haunting beauty.

I love Isabel Creston. She does her best to remain true to herself, even with all the changes and expectations her family places on her. I admired her ability to, in the end, do what's right. Colin Galloway is now one of my favorite male heroes. His ability to accept his birthright and fit in with those from all classes is unmatched. He is honorable, good, and handsome. With a cast full of overbearing characters like Mrs. Ellison and Mr. Bradford, and characters that just like to keep the peace, such as Constance Ellison, Colin helps Isabel hold on to herself.

The message of the story, as the title would imply, is about God's mercies being new every morning. As Isabel's friend Mary reminds her, "We do not find ourselves in new situations by accident. Oh, no! Remember, with each dawn seek guidance, and with each night give gratitude." Isabel learns to turn to God each morning for guidance and give gratitude for the things He has done for her by facing the trials that her family imposes on her.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was an exciting change of pace from what I had been reading and I look forward to reading more from this wonderful author.
Four Best Friends. And Then One Went Missing . . .

In college, Griffin McCray and his three best friends had their lives planned out. Griffin and Luke Gallagher would join the Baltimore Police Department, Declan Grey would head to the FBI, and Parker Mitchell would study to become a crime scene analyst. But then Luke vanished before graduation and their world--and friendships--crumbled.

Now years later, Griffin has left the police and his friendships behind. Still trying to forget a case that went bad when he was a SWAT team sniper, he's living a quiet life as a park ranger at Gettysburg. Quiet until skeletal remains are uncovered near Little Round Top--and they aren't Civil War-era.

Griffin just wants the case to go away, but charming forensic anthropologist Finley Scott discovers evidence pointing to the work of an expert sniper. When FBI agent Declan Grey steps in to take over the case, past and present collide. Griffin soon realizes he'll need to confront some of the darkest days of his life if he--and those he cares about--are going to escape a downward spiral of crime, danger, and murder.
My Review: I am absolutely, irrevocably in love with this series and this is only the first book! I can't believe I have to wait until 2017 for the next one! While the epilogue wrapped up Griffin and Finley's story quite nicely, I was shocked at the revelation Kate threw at us at the end. Dani Pettrey shines once again in her masterful descriptions and plot lines. Suspense abounds along with a lot of faith and romance in this exciting story.

I felt at home in the Chesapeake area with Finley, Griffin, Declan, Parker, Avery, and Kate. I loved Finley. She is strong in an understated way. She is smart and sassy. She dealt admirably with parts of her past, but as we all do, had to work really hard to really let go. Griffin is also a strong character in an understated way. His accomplishments make him shine, yet he doesn't allow them to give him a big head. I would have liked to see more sparring between the two characters. Their interactions before their feelings were revealed amused me. Griffin's past with Parker, Declan, and Kate made for an intersting side story, and I can't wait to see their relationships continue to heal.

Both characters grapple with coming to terms with their past. They both endured ugly, hard things. But they both had to realize that "God brings beauty and light to the darkest places" and that He can bring "beauty out of brokenness." Once they both accepted this realization, they could fully embrace what God brought to them: each other.

Overall, I am hooked on this series already. I am eagerly anticipating the release of book 2. Dani Pettrey writes another nail-biting, edge of your seat romantic suspense with a deep message.
