Faithtime 111 - Remembrance Day 11th November 2012 9am

Today is Remembrance Sunday – the history of this day goes back to the signing of the Armistice in 1918 – on the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the 11^th month – it signalled the end of the 1^st World War. Also known as the Great War – this day of remembering was called Armistice Day - today it is called Remembrance Day. In the 1^st World War something like 12 million soldiers and Civilians died – in the Second World War 50 million died.

Faithtime remembers those who have fallen in the last two wars and all conflicts.

Mike Howell Minister of the Welton Baptist Church has recorded a special Thought for this program.

Our Prayer for Remembrance Day is read for us by our Guest Reader Tracy Coles from Westfield

I read an article from the Somerset Guardian by Angela Brennan about the soldiers and airman that died in Stavanger in Norway - in 1942 – Peter Yeates who organises the Double Hills Memorial in Paulton is in Norway at this moment laying a wreath for 71 British soldiers and airmen who died on this ill fated mission.

Rev Jill Flowers Westfield Methodist Church reads her Thought on Remembrance Day and Norman Voake says the concluding prayer.

David Shearn starts the program playing the organ of the Midsomer Norton Methodist Church with He who would valiant be and Rachel Middleton plays her keyboard for the concluding music to the program.

May the Lord be with all those who mourn at this time.

On the Diary of Hope this week is Ceri Clements of Clean Slate Ltd, an Employment Agency. As I say in my broadcast, although not a Christian company, their ethical standards and vision prompted a £25,000 donation from Bath Abbey. Even when the world cannot see their need for Jesus and the hope found within Him, they find hope elsewhere in a way that they are able to relate to. In this time of deep recession, Ceri talks to me about the kind of hope Clean Slate are bringing to the unemployed. It is something we can pray about…

God is doing amazing things and I will begin to share some of these things with you so that we can support and pray for each other that God to accomplish His will in each of our lives.

This weeks program.

The main feature of today’s program is a telephone interview that our station manager Dom Chambers had with a friend of his called TOM KOSMO from the Albanian Orthodox Church in Boston in the United States of America.
Like you I know very little about the Albanian Orthodox Church so for our interest and edification this is part of the program.

Dom in conversation with me earlier was saying that Christianity developed in 2 strands after the fall of the Roman Empire. To the west Christianity developed into the Catholic Church and then the Anglican churches and of course the non conformist churches – to the east Christianity developed differently and to a considerable degree suffered repression and persecution. As Tom said when the Albanian church came to America it had freedom to preach and worship.

Colin Edwards a regular contributor from Newbury went for a walk in the countryside and recorded a Thought for us. He did this some weeks ago and because we have had so much material it’s been held over until now. I am grateful for his patience!

Question time is back with us again this time provided by Muriel and David Standing – they are testing us about quantities or numbers in the Bible.

This week’s program..

I was delighted to be asked by Cllr Rob Appleyard – the Chairman of B&NES Council to record the Civic Service that was to be held at St Peters Church in Westfield recently. Cllr Appleyard is the Councillor for the Westfield Ward where the service was held.

The service was led by Rev Rachma Bush Vicar of the St Peters Church – the address was given by the Rev Andrew Pottage Minister for Westfield Radstock and Writhlington Methodist Churches.

The Westfield Ladies choir conducted by Geoff Miles sang ‘I am a small part of the world’ and ‘Jubilate Deo’ – and delightful it was too.

Bible Readings were by Sonia Hutchinson the Chief Executive Officer of the Carer’s Centre B&NES and Cllr Rob Appleyard Chair of the B&NES Council.

We start the recording with the Civic procession.

After the service was over I took the opportunity to talk to Cllr Rob Appleyard – Sonia Hutchinson Chief Executive Officer of the Carer’s Centre B&NES and Elizabeth Lady Gass who is the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset

Hello all,

I do pray that the challenges of life are not weighing you down but managing to strengthen your testimonies and fill your life with great joy as you journey with the Lord each day. I have been giving much thought to the subject of showing favour and what the Lord has to say about this. I read the story of Joseph again, which I haven't had cause to read for a long time and was truly shocked. I mean, imagine being sold into slavery by your own siblings because favour shown to you caused an insurmountable depth of outrage and jealousy. It made me shudder....

This week TeenSpirit present a short play called 'Worthy of Attention' based on instruction found in James 2: 1-7 regarding the sin of favouritism in which more respect is shown to rich people or those in high position than to poor people who have no power or authority. Throughout the Word we are told that God does not show partiality. Any kind of bias in favour of people because of their wealth, position or fame is sinful because every human person is of equal worth in God’s sight. We hope you enjoy the play and the learning which comes with it.

I speak with 6 year old Noah Kingswood about the role of a Heavenly Father as we share in 'Prayers of the Children'.

This week's 'Diary of Hope' features a chat with Stephen Robinson, the new Minister of Midsomer Norton Methodist Church. We welcome him and his family and pray for good friendships, the Lord's guidance and shared vision in this their new community.

Today’s program is devoted mainly to a Service of Thanksgiving for the refurbished St John’s Church in Midsomer Norton that was held recently.

An enormous amount of money and time and effort has gone into correcting many structural problems in this church over 15 years both inside and out.

The service was conducted by the Vicar for this church the Rev Christopher Chiplin, his brother Rev Huw Chiplin [Vicar of St Matthews Kensington and Olympia in London] delivered the sermon. In attendance was also another brother and sister of Christopher Rev Malcolm Chiplin [retired Mountain Ash in Wales]and Rev Judith Chiplin [retired Withywood Bristol] – a unique situation I believe!

I interviewed after the service the 2 architects Terry Hopegood and Trevor Estelle – the Mayor of Midsomer Norton Cllr Paul Myers and of course Christopher whose dedication and vision as made this restoration possible.

I hope you enjoy the program. It is I believe the first time that we have recorded the refurbished organ and the Choir of St John – the sound is remarkable.

If you are in the locality do visit the church and admire the inside.

This week we feature the Memorial Service held in the Double Hills Field near Paulton. It was called Operation Market Garden.

For those who don’t know of this tragedy 68 years ago in September 1944 a Glider fell apart over Paulton as it was being towed to Arnhem – narrowly missing the Paulton Methodist Church that was full of worshippers. 2 Pilots and 21 Sappers died.

It was a moving service recorded under difficult circumstances because of the wind has been held annually for 34 years.

There is a fine memorial to be seen on land donated by Prince Charles.

It’s the first time I have witnessed this Service - something like 800 – 1000 people turned up.

I am grateful to many for being able to make this recording.

Centenary Edition of Faithtime broadcasting on Sunday 26th August 2012 at 09.00hrs

Welcome to the 100^th Edition of Faithtime.

The Christian message is wonderful – it will bring peace of mind and happiness in a world falling apart in many ways. It’s our responsibility to bring this message of hope to all those around us.

Dawn Farmer - Visitors Officer in Bath Abbey talks to us about the Volunteers in the Abbey and her role – I also had the opportunity to speak to an Abbey Volunteer - Peter Jones a retired teacher from Somervale School. All of this features today.

Peter Downey from Wellow talks about the Bethlehem Link [and Cllr Paul Crossley again] and also the Cross that been gifted by the Craftsmen of Bethlehem – it’s made from Olive Wood from trees taken from the area where it is believed the shepherds grazed their sheep at the time of the Birth of Jesus. A lovely gesture and as yet a Committee has to decide if this is the Cross that could be used at Haycombe – it’s all under discussion. This is a picture of it. Its 6ft by 4ft approximately.

To our surprise a Listener from the Philippines walked into the studio – Dennis Stanbury – he wanted to see how it all happens. That only happened when he had agreed to record a Thought!! So Dennis much to his surprise is on the program this week.

Joy is our Presenter for the next two weeks.

I am preparing an item about the new building work that is going to happen in Bath Abbey called the FOOTPRINTS – really exciting it is in a later program.

Somer Valley Radio Outside Broadcast Unit will be at the Double Hills Memorial Service at Paulton on Sunday 2^nd September – this will feature as part of one of our future programs. A HORSA Glider broke up over Paulton in September 1944 and 23 soldiers and airman lost their lives.

The Memorial Service is about this tragedy.

Jerry Parr the Chaplain from St Marks School in Bath talks about his life and work – a most interesting interview.

Russ Brand Editor for the INSPIRE Magazine allows us to read an article about a Paralympian you will see on your screen in the forthcoming Paralympics starting on the 29^th August – her name is Stef Reid – she will be running in the 100m and 200m races and also the long jump. What a story it is – thanks to Ann Gardiner Bryan for agreeing to read Stef’s story.

Christopher Chiplin speaks about Criticism and how to handle it and Steve Gretton talks about Crowd Encouragement.

Paul Crossley Leader of B&NES Council talks about the Bethlehem Link and also about the latest situation at Haycombe Crematorium and the Cross – most interesting this item is too.

There is a feature about Sam Evans – a young 17 years from Norton Hill School who is going places with his music. Sam does reflective music for this program and features in a Thought I have prepared called Wheat and Milling.

15 year Lizzy McCloud from Milton Keynes was doing 2 week work experience on the subject of church ministry – locally.

She chose to stay with her Aunt and Uncle who live in Radstock to be able to spend time with Andrew Stammers the Minister for the Radstock Baptist church. I thought this was too good an opportunity to miss - so arranged with Andrew for him to interview Lizzy at the radio station.

Davis Shearn entertains us on the Westmorland Organ at the Methodist Church in Midsomer Norton with some traditional music.

Norman Voake does us a thought on the subject of Holidays

Steve Richards from Birmingham sent us a thought and is read by John Barnard. This was omitted from last week my apologies to Steve and John.

A new contributor for the radio station David Banks talks about Troubles in this life!

Besides the questions this week supplied by David and Muriel Standing and I give a mini thought to make us think.

Incidentally the Questions this week by David and Muriel are based roughly on an Olympic Theme.

As some of you will know the workload for this program has increased so much more than I anticipated – consequently Joy Webb – a very experienced radio presenter at Somer Valley FM has agreed to co-present this program with me. Joy is such a blessing to have and she will produce roughly one in four FAITHTIME programs starting from today in her own style but basically a similar format.

Welcome to Faithtime 88 on this Jubilee Weekend

Isn’t it wonderful to be able to celebrate her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee.

Its a bit of a celebrating time in the country at the moment – last Sunday we celebrated WHITSUN – the time when the Disciples received the gift of the HS promised them by the LJC.

On our program today - Norman Voake talks about the Jubilee and Gill has linked her questions to the subject of Celebrations.

Also on the program we have David and Muriel Standing and the Rev Christopher Chiplin. I am grateful to them all for their contributions.

Martin Horler contacted me recently from his home in Kilmersdon to suggest some music from the West Gallery Music Association of some Sacred Music from the Georgian Era and is sung by the VITAL SPARK music group.

Also I have chosen two new hymns from the MOOR MUSIC CD – these recordings are by the Choirs of YATTON Moor in North Somerset.

I play one of my favourites Look at the World by John Rutter.

Enjoy Prayertime with music towards the end of the program.

The Work of Faithtime has become so big and popular I have asked Joy Webb - already an experienced presenter with Somer Valley FM to join me to help with the work load. That will happen in the next 2 - 3 weeks. Joy will present her own version of Faithtime when she does and this will be once a month. More later on this point.

Whit Sunday 27th May 2012 at 9am

This Sunday is Whit Sunday an important day in the Christian Calendar as it is considered to be the start of the Christian Church 2000 years ago. The disciples were given extraordinary powers to perform miracles. Martin Dymond talks about it in the program.

Rev Rachma Bush Chaplain of the Norton Radstock Technical College and Priest in charge at St Peters Westfield chooses as her theme for her talk – ‘work’.

Pat Rock reads one of her poems called God’s Signs and I spotted an article in the Methodist AMBO Magazine an article called ‘deep clean’ you will hear me reading it!

The main feature is a replay of Ted Hudson from Timsbury on the subject of Bibles for Children organisation he is head of in Timsbury. We replay this by popular request.

Next Sunday we will feature the Queens Jubilee – so great thoughts and some new music!

Our main feature this week is an interview with Norman Voake – a retired teacher from Somervale School – local historian and now retired local preacher.

Norman is aged 82 [although you wouldn’t think it when you see him!] – he has such a lively mind. Kathy Dymond very ably interviews him about his life and work and what his church means to him. This is one of the highlights of any our Faithtime programs – it’s brilliant!

Stephen Richards from Birmingham has sent an article about ‘why do people doubt the resurrection’? John Eastbury reads it for Stephen.

Rev Stephen Burrows – Curate from St John’s in Chilcompton talks about light drawing from the recent amazing advance in medical science of giving sight to a blind man.

Pat Rock reads one of her many poems she has recorded for Faithtime – asking for strength to live our daily lives.

Gill has her usual 5 questions this time about the Disciples of Christ

Our main item in this weeks program is an interview with a Surgeon from one of the MERCY SHIPS – Tony Giles and his nurse wife Ann. Their dedication to doing this amazing work over many years is most interesting. He specialises with reconstructing facial problems.

Find out more about this remarkable organisation that travels the world but particularly around Africa performing medical operations amongst other things.

John Eastbury talks about a journey he had on the top deck of a bus whilst travelling through a part of Somerset.

Gill has her usual questions about things ships and seas to fit our Theme.

Peter Van Peborgh tells us about the Art Exhibition there is at the Church Tearooms next to St Nicholas’s Church in Radstock. It’s artwork and photos from members of that church.

Faithtime this week is interested in the Operation Mobilisation Ships Organisation that operates worldwide. A Christian outreach and training organisation that has visited 500 ports in more than 160 countries - 1 million people come on board each year.

Steve Packwood the Development Manager for OM Ships was speaking at the Welton Baptist Church recently and I managed to catch up with him with my digital recorder – I also got to hear that 2 local people Terry and Gilyan Mears had spent time on board helping out on several occasions. Listen to their story!

Colin Edwards a listener from Newbury ponders the subject of Intolerance and Empathy – very interesting too!

Diane Sanders from Chilcompton has recorded a lovely poem she has written called ‘So let it be’.

I read a mini thought on Spiritual Starvation.

Have we a treat for you at the end of the program - recently I was handed a recording of the Midsomer Norton Male Voice Choir that regretfully disbanded after about 100yrs – they sing Abide with me – the conductor was Martin Gould accompanied on the piano by the very popular Ivy Mills – the soloist is Don Ladd. I am grateful to Brian Preston who made contact with us at SVFM and who was responsible for recording this performance. There is more to follow in future weeks of this remarkable choir.

Our main feature today is a talk I had with two volunteers from the Samaritans – Ruth and Jacqueline – I thought I knew everything about this organisation but realised I didn’t as we talked.

Paul Evans does his 5 min Christian Insight – where I ask quick fire questions and get quick replies all within 5 mins! Paul works in Romania but lives in MSN!

The 5 questions today are about Kings Prophets and Apostles.

Today’s program is all about Easter

In the program we have Norman Voake – talking about the Resurrection – John Munro talks about Springtime and a New Hope – Martin Dymond talks about the Folded Napkin and also reads a Thought from Steve Richards in Birmingham called Jesus saves.

St John’s Primary School in MSN held an Easter Service at the St John’s Church recently and we have an edited version of that for you to listen too. I talk to Carolyn Banfield the Head Teacher.

I am grateful to Rev Christopher Chiplin and Carolyn Banfield the Head Teacher for letting FAITHTIME on SVFM record their service.

The hymn to start with is the Jubilee Choir singing ‘when I survey the wondrous cross’.

Faithtime 79 Broadcasting Sunday 1st April at 9am

The main feature of FAITHTIME today is about the Ugandan Watoto Children’s Choir and the Watoto Church. Performing at the Midsomer Norton Methodist Church in March the packed audience was enthralled by their singing and dancing. FAITHTIME tries to capture a part of the atmosphere of that evening and to give you an understanding of what Watoto means to so many children affected by HIV/AIDS.

As a matter of interest £2600 was collected during the evening.

Sam Evans a young talented musician in Midsomer Norton has recorded some music for us and we use it at the end to finish the program – so do listen – we will be using it regularly during future programs.

Ben Beckett gives us his Thoughts on Easter and of course we have those questions about the time of Palm Sunday.

Next week our program will be about the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.
