The Interactive Systems Research Group offers a Master Thesis on developing a voice-based user interface to control a flight of a UAV.

Navigating a UAV is not an easy task that requires initial instructions and an extensive training to become proficient. One of the ways to reduce the time for preliminary preparation and, in general, to simplify an operator’s work is to develop a more natural and intuitive user interface.

In the last decades, many scientific efforts have been made with an ultimate goal to develop a Natural User Interface (NUI). The word “natural” implies that the target interface would provide an easy and fast way to interact with a system. As speech is among the most natural ways of communication, it is proposed to develop a user interface with speech as a core modality.

Open Master’s Thesis: Mobile Video Browser through Peephole Interaction on Projector Phones

The Interactive Systems Research Group offers a master thesis focusing on developing and evaluating a new video browsing technique based on peephole interaction with projector phones. (With some modifications to be discussed this work can also be done as part of an 8h „Softwarepraktikum“).

Over the years mobile devices became rich multimedia devices. Many users have large image and video collections stored on their mobile devices. Different successful approaches exist for browsing through images on a mobile device. For example, by displaying thumbnails in a grid users can quickly scroll through hundreds of images. However, useful video browsing tools are missing and browsing through large video collections remains a challenge for the user.

We envision a video browser that runs on projector phones and allows users to quickly skim through a large video collection.

Ausschreibung einer Master-Arbeit: Dynamischer XML Editor für HCI Design Patterns

Design Patterns (Entwurfsmuster) haben sich auf dem Gebiet des Software Engineerings zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil des Wissenstransfers entwickelt. Um zu vermeiden, dass Lösungswege für bestimmte Probleme immer wieder von neuem erfunden werden, unterstützen Design Patterns die Entwickler durch Identifikation und Dokumentation von Best-Practice-Lösungen.
Anfang der Neunzigerjahre wurde dieses Prinzip aus der Architektur auf den Bereich der Softwareentwicklung übertragen und es wurden Pattern-Kataloge veröffentlicht, die wiederkehrende Probleme und deren Lösungen in der (objektorientierten) Softwareentwicklung beschreiben.
In der Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Community erkannte man etwas später ebenfalls den Nutzen des Design Pattern Konzepts und adaptierte es für das Interface Design (HCI Patterns, Usability Patterns, Interaction Patterns). In der Folge wurden verschiedene Entwurfsmuster-Sammlungen publiziert.
Auf basis von PLML (Pattern Language Markup Language), einem Ansatz für einen Standard für die Abbildung von HCI Design Patterns in XML, wurde der erweiterte Standard XPLML entwickelt um HCI Design Pattern in einer einheitlichen formalisierten Sprache abbilden zu können.
Gegenstand der Diplomarbeit ist die Entwicklung eines XML Editors der es erlaubt anhand einer Spezifikation (XPLML) eine Ausfüllhilfe zu generieren um Patterns editieren zu können. Dieser Editor soll sich dynamisch auf jeweilige Änderungen anpassen können. Wird z.B. ein Element in der Spezifikation hinzugefügt, muss der Editor das erkennen und ein Formularfeld für dieses Element zur Verfügung stellen (mit all den Einschränkungen, die im XML Schema definiert sind). Dieser Editor sollte ein modulares Konzept haben, um im Laufe der Zeit weitere Module und Funktionalitäten hinzufügen zu können.
