Doing decals right

When I started painting many many years ago there was something that I saw that constantly blew my mind.

How did the decals on the spacemarine shoulder pads ever look right?! I trimmed the decals out, dunked them in hot water and carefully placed them. And they looked awful.

The decals would never conform to the shoulder pad, they were bumpy reflected the light. It did not look like the damn picture on the box.

I forget when I finally figured out how it was done, safe to say it was many years ago.

But I feel like the more people that share this the fewer people will end up like me pulling their hair out years ago (before the googles and amazon people) trying to figure out how the hell this effect was achieved.

There are a few things you need for this other than your brush, decal sheet, scissors. and warm water.
These guys right here MicroSet and MicroSol these are the magic makers.

MicroSet is a setting solution. Think of it as decal glue. It dries clear and looks like water but microset is put down to help your decal stick.

MicroSol is a decal solvent solution. MicroSol is going to melt your decal onto your surface given enough coats. And when I mean melt I mean it. That decal can take damn near any form. Here is an extreme example of one used on a cloak.

Here is a step by step on the space wolves I recently gave up on.

1. Cut decal and stuff in warm water.

2. while waiting for decal to slide off prep surface with some brushed on microset.

3. once decal is ready slide decal into place and gently brush micro set of around and under decal as needed removing any excess and being careful not to put so much liquid down the decal moves.

4. let decal dry.

5. Apply microsol. (repeat many times). Using a brush apply the microsol to the decal removing any excess. once dry continue the process until you are happy with the fit of your decal.

6. Seal the decal with the sealant of your choice. I generally run satin or matte varnishes over my models but basically whatever finish you are going for throw it on the decal as well. Generally decals are the last step before sealing and intense weathering on my models.

The sealant is important it will reduce any glare off of the decal and give it a similar texture to whatever is around it on the model be it armor cloth flesh etc.

And there you have it. This stuff can really take your miniature game to the next level. It is easy to do and really opens up a ton of creative options on your projects.

BotW: Quick Winter Bases

So last night i threw down some paint on the riders on my shelved thunder wolves.

The thunder wolves themselves were done like 2 years ago and have since just been sitting in a box waiting for their riders to be done.

I needed something of a quick break from my blood angels as I have been getting a little burned out.

Anyway there is nothing impressive about these models paint wise, but i thought it might be a really nice way to show off some simple basing techniques.

I love building terrain and basing it is kind of my jam, and doing just a little bit more on a base can help hide how lazy you were with a model. And if you were not lazy with a model it can take it the extra mile.

Here we go simple winter bases.

Step 1

Find base.
These huge ThunderWolf cavalry bases will work just fine.
Done.

Step 2

Paint or texture base. Normally I throw texture down on a base, sand, gravel whatever and then seal it with paint.

I do this even if I am going to dump snow over it. In this case though I am going to roll with a flat base and just paint it a few different shades of brown.

I expect that there will be places that the snow does not cover and I want those to have some color interest. I will blend it all together with a quick wash of agrax earthshade.

Step 3

Add interesting stuff.

So I am going to add some rocks and grasses here. You can go as crazy or as simple as you want here.

As you place things keep in mind the order of operations in nature. Rocks most of the time are there before grass, grass is usually there before snow, at least its going to be underneath it.

But we are going to build up our imaginary scene to something of interest before snow, then we are going to not so imagine it snowing on our base.

Step 4
Add the snow.

There are tons of ways to make snow. I am using a Tamiya product I believe just to try it out. Normally I use woodland scenics winter flock mixed with white glue.

Alternatively if you are doing a display piece you can use some crushed glass as well.

Secret weapon miniatures creates that, but I only tend to mess with it when I am not going to be pushing the model around the table.

Snow application is up to you. You can go as heavy or as light as you want for my bases here i want to see some of the grasses and rocks show through, while having the majority of the base covered. With the Tamiya product I had to add some water to the paste to help smooth out the application of the snow.

All done!

There you have it piece of cake.

Fantasy Football: Patriot Dreams

Ok so in addition to painting toy soldiers I am a huge fantasy football fanatic.

I am in 10+ leagues and I absolutely love building dynasty teams and wheeling and dealing throughout the offseason.

So recently there has been a bunch of hub bub about the patriots as there always is. But for those of you who are uninitiated to the nerddom that is fantasy football the patriots are one of the greatest dynasty of all time.

They have been in the majority of the super bowls in the last 10 years. It seems though there dynasty is coming to a close at least for a little while. The star QB of the patriots Tom Brady is getting into his 40s and their star tight end Rob Gronkowski is contemplating retirement due to multiple injuries over his career.

When it comes to fantasy football tight end is one of the crappiest positions you have to fill. There are maybe 5 starters that can every week make a difference on your team, and when healthy Gronk is without a doubt the best tight end in the game.

So as he contemplates retirement he sits on a few of my strongest teams and I struggle to decide whether I attempt to trade him to another team for something (his value is low because of his retirement rumors).

Ok so there is my predicament roll with the top TE in the game who may retire or make a move to trade him amongst these rumors.

One night recently right before bed I was mulling trade options and eventually gave up and went to bed.

I had a dream that took me all the way back to high school. Where I began in the classroom of some standard course of which i can't recall. I ran into the high school jock/quarterback.

He was a nice enough guy I didn't have any problem with him back in the day. But this day i came to the conclusion that he was the patriots quarterback. He wasn't so much Tom Brady as our high school quarterback happened to be the quarterback of the patriots.

I said whats up then said "Hey man, I hate to bother you with this, but whats goin on with Gronk?"
He responded. "Falconer, don't you worry about a thing it is all just the normal smoke screen you are good to go. We are good to go."

So I sat in my desk feeling better about my situation. I turn to look at who is sitting on the other side of me. And it is bill Belichick with his feet up on the desk a chewing on a cigar he smiles and nods.

I throw this dream out to the fantasy universe not to call my shot more to say hey this happened lets see how it plays out.

Alpha Legion Abaddon Conversion

So back in 7th edition I put together an alpha legion army. It may have actually been in 6th edition it is hard to recall exactly.

The idea was that i would use the epic cypher rules that let chaos chosen infiltrate and be as close to alpha legion as i could get.

This was in the bad ole days of the chaos codex. I think i may have been lucky enough to win one game with them.

It was pretty brutal back in those editions. As I look back not only were the rules brutal but so was my conversion and paint job.

I based the model largely off of the chaos terminator lord / chaos terminator sorcerer kit. I swapped out the helmet with a grey knight terminator helmet.

I did this all throughout the army as you will see with the other troops and terminators. At the time i thought it looked pretty badass.

I ran abaddon and cypher. Abaddon was probably the only real solid HQ in the codex, so to give my army a fighting chance I had to stuff him in there.

On the bases for the army I did try to give some scale to the terminators by throwing down multiple layers of cork.

In the end as I reflect the model overall was not awful and it is very nice to see how far I have progressed.

The model has certainly aged but if you have any interest in a chaos terminator lord it is available above from amazon.

Movement in Miniatures

So one of the models I am working on for my 8th edition blood angels army is the space marine primaris repulsor.

Let me be honest here.
This model sucks.

It looks like games workshop took a cool tank chassis covered it in glue and rolled it around in a bucket of random weapons bits. It is one of the most static models I have ever seen.

Now I love what it does on the tabletop. It is a ton of fun to roll all those dice and make hover tank noises and you push it around the table.

I have been shot by them in a tournament. It took like 15 minutes to resolve all the guns. It smoked my sad little plague marines.

That being said I wanted to roll one i thought i could do a bad ass job spiffing one up and making it look like it should.

Above you can see (and buy if you need one) the standard pose of this hover tank. Mind you its a hover tank that is hovering blandly in one spot.

I started off by buying chunks of the tank off of ebay. I purchased the hull the turret and other things by the end of it I might as well have just purchased the kit.

I made a few tweaks most noticeably to the magnetic hover plates to open the model up and see more of the hull of the tank. There is a ton of smooth space on the tank that is going to be covered in blood angel art when it is done. But even then we got the static tank just sitting there.

The goal was to give the tank the idea of movement and power that given its size, bulk and rules it shows on the tabletop. What I learned is that it takes very little to make completely alter the composition/aesthetic of a model.

All I did here was take a piece of card stock pipe and cut it at an angle. Then I added a substantial amount of glue to get this sucker fixed to the base and fixed to the model. We now have a tank that is banking and slewing its turret around to acquire a target for its 400 shots.

The addition of a flag i think from the age of sigmar empire unit (whatever they are called now it was just in the bits box) helped further the illusion of the tank hauling ass across the battlefield.

Anyway it doesn't take much to make a model truly standout from its peers this is an example of just that. Also below is a kit I purchased from amazon that I can highly recommend. You get a random sample of plasticcard stock pieces. This is perfect for terrain and base work and all sorts of random mini related projects. I have used it far more than I ever expected to.

So it has been awhile. I have had a second kiddo furthered my career outside of painting. Bought and sold armies rolled through 3 new editions of 40k. Now I am back. Because why not. To be honest I wanted to share my painting progress over the last half decade. I have finished a major project a year or sooo. I think since the white scars on this very blog. In fact amazingly I sold these white scars on ebay idk 4-5 years ago. Then... some one sold them again. And a guy at the place I play the most bought them. So I played against minis I painted 2 or 3 years after i sold them. small world.

This is going to be pretty stream of consciousness. I am not writing to make money or get big or famous or anything like that. I just want to share my hobby progress with the community along with any tips and tricks I learn. I am going to start with the oldest projects I can find and work my way up to the newer ones. The alpha legion project has already sold earlier this year. I painted 2 or 3 years ago. Before that was a khorne demon army but sadly I am not sure I have any pictures of that army. It moved to france. After alpha legion it will be the space wolves, then death guard (last year) and my current project the blood angels.

So all that being said here is a blast from the past. My alpha legion rhinos. I will give a bit more info on them in future posts as far as the painting and all that goes.

I will be making more updates to the blog over time and as I upload finished minis I will push them over to CMON as well.

I want to do some fun speed painting challenges as well and when I finish those items I imagine I will stuff most of them up on the For Sale page. If you are interested let me know.

Razorback Conversion

I miss the days of the old las cannon twin linked plasma gun turret. The most common fix for the lack of a turret is gluing to plasma guns to a rhino bolter turret and sticking it on top of the tank. There is nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't seem real razor backy to me.

So I took a predator turret did some cutting and added some plasticard, green stuff, and a few plasma guns. I think it turned out pretty solid.

Next Project - Khorne Warhost

So with the new chaos space marine codex I finally begun to indulge in an army I have wanted to do for a long long looooong time. Chaos world eaters led by the best character ever...Kharn the Betrayer. I have been kicking around lists for awhile to try to get an idea of what might work...but over time I have come to the conclusion that...if I build an army like Khorne would, I should be rewarded. I've got a list so far that I think could with a game without shooting...of course fliers will kick is but, HOWEVER it should be incredibly fun to play and thats how I prefer my armies.

So here are some quick shots of the first unit I have put together. 5 raptors with dual meltaguns. I am currently trying my hand at resin casting sooooooo I am in the middle of creating a sprue to cast special chaos weapons hence why the squad is a few melta guns light. I hope it works and it will open up a lot of cool opportunities for this new force.

I will be getting paint on these guys soon! I can't wait, I am so happy to not be painting white!

Snikrot - Bronze Spawn 40mm

This was the model I put the most time into for the Standish Standoff painting competition. I have always wanted to do Snikrot, it is a great unqiue model especially in the 40mm category. So I thought it would be a model that is not seen a ton on the painting seen and something that I could make stand out easily. I mean the idea of a stealthy killer orc is far scarier to me than a mob of orcs you can see coming.

By the end of it I believe I spent 2 days painting on him. The fall camo scheme on his fatigues was pulled straight from the call of duty Russian scheme used in I think modern warfare 2. Mork's teef started off as boltgun metal then were hit with several washes included Secret Weapon Miniatures Storm cloud wash(IT IS FANTASTIC FOR METALS I <3 IT). Then the whole shabang got weathered with pigments from Secret weapon as well.

The base was built from multiple layers of cheap cork covered in several mixtures of different flock, then that flock was base coated in a black/brown then multiple layers of pigments were applied over the base to build up the color of the autumn-ish scene.

The leaves and tree were also from SWM I can't recommend their products enough they really helped me pull this model off.

When I was done with this guy I really thought had a winning entry on my hands and I was not disappointed. Here are some shots of the awesome trophies that the crew at crossroad games put together for the tournament. I am extremely proud to own one.

Sanguinary guard

This was a sanguinary guard model I whipped together the night before the standish standoff. I wanted something that could compete in the competition, I didn't know how it would do since there are only a few hours into the model, but it ended up with an honorable mention.

I see now many many things I could have done better on the model and I have 4 more from the kit to improve on.

Completed White Scars Storm Talon

Here is a quick post up of my white scars storm talon. I entered this guy in the vehicle competition for the Bronze Spawn at the standish standoff and it won an honorable mention. I am very pleased with how this came out and this model has really grown on me over time. Originally I wasn't a huge fan but all painted up its pretty nifty.

Pigment Experiment Juggernaught

I painted this model for the Standish Standoff bronze spawn competition. I wanted to punch out something quick and play around with a bunch of weathering pigments I picked up off of secret weapon miniatures. Sadly he did not even get an honorable mention but I still think he turned out cool and I learned a lot about what I could and couldn't do with weathering pigments.

The model itself was washed with varying metals from the citadel range, along with some blues greens and purple to try to give the metal a worn look. Then I took an airbrush to the eyes and the vents on the underside of the model to give it a quick glowing look.

Back in Action

Okay I have gone completely off the radar since August of this year.

It was not a hobby lull, in fact it was more of a hobby binge. Towards the end of January I realized I had no army painted and tournament season up here in the cold white north was quickly rolling around. So I had to put my head down and paint paint paint, blogging was out as I generally only had an hour a night I could spend on the hobby. So with that being said I was able to successfully get my army done to a high standard, the best I have personally ever done in fact.

I am glad the binge is over and I have already settled on my next year long project. My goal is to try to max the paint score at the Standish Standoff next year. I pulled at 37 of a possible 40 this year which is pretty damn good considering I had to rush to finish it off at the end. I won't make that mistake this upcoming year I am already trying to figure out how I am going to pull off my vision and by the end of the month I should have a plan laid out for year covering the entire build.

With more time and better planning I should be able to keep up tracking the progress on the build. So anyway my 1.5 year old is about to snag the keyboard so I am off.

More White Scars progress

Well the shoulder pads are about complete on the first tactical squad. Another coat on the red trim of the tactical shoulder pad is necessary, but at this point I can see the squad coming together and it's going to look great. There is still a lot to do though it seems like the most difficult peices are tied up. I am having some difficulty making the bolters pop but with some persistence and patience I will get them just right.

On another note I was able to save the oil weathered predator from a brown off white existence.

Progress slow but sure

Has been a crazy few weeks. Not that I have a ton of time for hobby progress but I have been on kiddo duty in the evenings the last 2 weeks which has cut my normal hour of hobby time in the evening down to nearly zero. (hence the lack of blog updates) Last night I was able to get the shoulder pads tied up on 6 marines in my first tactical squad.

They are looking quite sharp, though I hope they go to Finecast soon, the moulds on these guys seems to be extremely hit and miss. One pad looks great like it should the next looks like a hammer was taken to the emblem. This is only noticeable upon close inspection but it still is aggravating. These six pads took about 2 hours to complete, and I just want to thank GW for the foundation white paint it is a life saver.

There is still a ways to go on these guys and I need to get rolling on the remainder of the squad but I am excited about how they have popped with just the shoulder pads being completed.

On another note my Grey Knight army is for sale. My son is on a rampage and I really only have room enough to protect one army at a time, I have also largely stopped playing them as I felt they were a bit too "easy" to win with.

The extra cash will help around the home with some improvements that need to be made and to fund the current scars project. They are a great army they look good, have nearly maxed out painting points in multiple events and have led me to multiple tournament wins. Oil Weathering a Tank - First Attempt

Hello All!
Today I am going to share my recent experience with using oils to weather a Space Marine Predator. I am in the process of rebuilding and painting my White Scars so I will be showing how I accomplished this weathering on a white base. I want to preface this tutorial / horror show with the following (this is my first attempt at using oil weathering, and the examples I had to learn from were not weathering white armor and this makes a difference.

Before weathering you need to have the tank pretty much painted in the colors you want, at least the parts you are going to weather. So on this guy I threw a wash of Secret Weapons Soft Body Black then added the decals (because they have to be weathered too). The red trim was largely completed also though it will need a little work after I played with a glaze that ended up shinier than I would have liked. But here is what we have before we start weathering.

I have worked with oils in the canvas painting arena so I am somewhat familiar with them but for those who have never been exposed to them there are a few things you need to know. Dry time is a day or two - you can tweak this paint on the miniature for quite a long time, but this also means that you can foul up your paint job for a day or two after you are done. So plan your painting times accordingly. You also have to use turpentine to clean brushes/ dilute oils they have some versions that have no smell but be aware that you need good ventilation if you are not using such a product. Also you will want to grab a few brushes or use some of your older brushes. Having two brushes to switch between makes things much simpler.

So the technique that I began with was a form of one that is used heavily in military modeling to get realistic water stains/ smears smudges etc. I made some mistakes this I know and there were a few OH $#!7 moments but overall I think the effect came off okay. I do not know if I will try this again but once I have a squad of infantry weathered we will see how they all fit together.

Basically you use 3 or 4 different colors and dot them over a flat surface then you use a flat brush with turpentine to pull them all together. Be sure to brush in the same direction and in a straight line.
This is pre-turpentine brushing. And yes it is one of those moments I mentioned above as it looks like my nicely based tank is going to look like a damn clown car.

And this is where I learned the rules are a bit different on a white base. I was under the impression you could just pull these paints off with turpentine...on white a stain is left. So after a few pairs of undies and a lot of turpentine I was able to get something reasonable out of this and not ruin the miniature. To fix this I had to actually blend some white oils back into this surface to save it.

But all was not lost, as I stated before this was a learning experience so I adjusted my strategy. The blending of oil colors was causing a very strong tint of the white. So rather than blending multiple colors together I settled on a light brownish single color that I will blend into with acrylics after I get the streaks I am looking for. I then went about the entire tank splotching away with my small brush and pulling with my large one.

The real trick is that every pass you make with your bigger brush you need to clean it. Dip it in turpentine, remove the excess, and then start streaking again. You can also use your small brush to apply turpentine directly to the model and then hit it with your big brush to remove a portion of a streak. This way you can be very selective in where your weathering occurs. Again on white you have to be very careful due to the staining but I think on darker colors you could get away with much more.

Here is the finished product (as far as the oils go), I will be adding pigments and there is lots of painting that still needs to be done. I had to go back in with white oil paint in several places in order to tone down the brownish stains that dominated the model. Overall I think this tank is looking pretty promising with a bit more tweaking to the technique I think I can really make great use of oils in my painting. At some point I am going to try to my hand at oil weathering on infantry.

I will finish off the tank in a future article so you can see how the oils play into the overall paint scheme on the tank. There is plenty of work left to do on this guy and you can stay tuned for more progress.

White Scar Scouts Finishing touches

I was able to get some weathering powders on these guys this evening and get them sealed off with a satin finish shot thru the airbrush. I think these guys turned out quite nice, there are another 5 I will add to the army when playing at 2000 points. I used the Secret Weapon Yellow Earth weathering powder pretty sparsely on these guys, I just tried to hit the areas I can imagine their armor collecting a little dirt, their boots, pants and knees go a hit of it too, and to help it blend in I added a dusting to the bases.

The decals were a bit of a booger as the shoulder pads don't lend themselves well to decals. I tried to adhere to the white scar fluff here too. Uninitiated scouts only have the red bolt on their shoulder pad, they are granted the complete emblem when they become a full battle brother. So on the sarge you can see the complete chapter symbol for the white scars and on the scouts I trimmed the decal back as much as possible and painted around anything I couldn't trim to help blend the decal as seamlessly as possible into the armor. I think it turned out quite well.

The camo was a huge pain in the butox. I have never been able to do camo patterns to high standard, but I think I pulled it off here. It took a lot of research to figure out the right colors (as you can see in a previous post) but it paid off. It is so easy with camo to over complicate the pattern, in general the simpler the better.

Well up next is finishing off my oil weathered pred and the first "grey hunters" squad.

Things are going waaay too fast!

It has been a blur of activity the last two months. I have barely been able to squeeze in any hobby progress. In fact in June I only worked 1 full week things were so crazy. So July is finally setting in and things seem to be getting into a rythme. I have had the chance to get a few games of 6th edition in and I really enjoy the game. Getting used to the wound allocation has taken a bit but I think I finally have it down.

This game is wide open. There are some combos that really break the game and this has led me down the road of building the army I want to rather than building something that will win. So my white scars force will have tons of different types of units and will be a well round army that I plan to play the crap out of.

With any luck I will have some pictures of new stuff up soon. I am currently working on weathering the scouts and fixing up the oil weathered pred that got a little yellowed out when I was attempting the technique.

Okay so this is going to be a picture post mostly. I have been working in my free time on my 5 man scout squad. I have made really good progress, though I was hoping to have them complete by the end of this weekend. There is a lot of time in these guys, but they are still not ready. I am doing my best to stay patient and do them right rather then just tie them up.

Currently I am grinding out their armor which just takes awhile but thank good GW came out with their new white foundation paint it saves a ton of time, probably has cut down the number of coats down by half. Looks like by the end of it I will have 5 or 6 watered down coats of white on the armor.

Once that is done I have to clean up the fatigues on the squad and the plasma pistol on the sarge. Then some camo touch ups, general clean up, and the BASES! I can't wait to do the bases, they always make the models pop so much more.

Anyway after all of the trouble I had pulling off the camo on the capes and the wraps on their back I think I will do a tutorial covering how I did it. Half so any one reading one make the same mistakes I did and half to hopefully get some ideas from you guys out there who are better at it than me.

Researching Camo Patterns

Okay so I am trying to figure out the best camo scheme to use on my White Scars Scouts camo cloaks. Now these guys are going to be based in a "steppe" theme, so we are looking at sage brush, scrub grass all that sort of thing. After a bit of searching on the google I found a few images of the steppe terrain I want to place my army in.

Based off what I found I did some searching for places where this kind of terrain exists. Unsuprisingly China is where a lot of this type of terrain exists, so I did some further searches on Chinese army uniforms and chinese snipers.

The best photo I could come up with is above and it is a decent place to start. With some further searching I found a few more good pictures below. Basically I am somewhere between desert and grassland. It is an interesting color scheme to emulate, but I am looking forward to have a go at it.
