Scientists have claimed they would serve the world's first test tube hamburger this October.

A team, led by Prof Mark Post of Maastricht University in the Netherlands, says it has already grown artificial meat in the laboratory, and now aims to create a hamburger, identical to a real stuff, by generating strips of meat from stem cells.

The finished product is expected to cost nearly 220,000 pounds, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Prof Post said his team has successfully replicated the process with cow cells and calf serum, bringing the first artificial burger a step closer.

“In October we are going to provide a proof of concept showing out of stem cells, we can make a product that looks, feels and hopefully tastes like meat,” he was quoted by the British newspaper as saying.

Although it is possible to extract a limited number of stem cells from cows without killing them, the scientists say the most efficient way of taking the process forward would still involve slaughter.

He said: “Eventually my vision is that you have a limited herd of donor animals in the world that you keep in stock and that you get your cells form there.

Each animal will be able to produce about a million times more meat through the lab— based technique than through traditional method of butchery.”

According to the scientists, making a complete burger will require 3,000 strips of muscle tissue, each of which measures about three cm long by 1.5 cm wide, with a thickness of half—a—millimetre and takes six weeks to produce.

The meat will then be ground up with 200 strips of fat tissue, produced in the same way, to make a hamburger. To produce the meat, stem cells are placed in a broth containing vital nutrients and serum from a cow foetus which allow them to grow into muscle cells and multiply up to 30 times.

The strips of meat begin contracting like real muscle cells, and are attached to velcro and stretched to boost this process and keep them supple.

At the moment the method produces meat with realistic fibres and a pinkish—yellow tinge, but the scientists expect to produce more authentically coloured strips in near future.

The project, funded by a wealthy and anonymous individual aims to slash the number of cattle farmed for food, and in doing so reduce one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

Television screens that can be rolled up and carried in a pocket are to become a reality using technology developed by British scientists.

Researchers have developed a new form of light-emitting crystals, known as quantum dots, which can be used to produce ultra-thin televisions.

The tiny crystals, which are 100,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair, can be printed onto flexible plastic sheets to produce a paper-thin display that can be easily carried around, or even onto wallpaper to create giant room-size screens.

The scientists hope the first quantum dot televisions – like current flat-screen TVs, but with improved colour and thinner displays – will be available in shops by the end of next year. A flexible version is expected to take at least three years to reach the market.

Michael Edelman, chief executive of Nanoco, a spin out company set up by the scientists behind the technology at Manchester University, said: “We are working with some major Asian electronics companies. The first products we are expecting to come to market using quantum dots will be the next generation of flat-screen televisions.

“The real advantage provided by quantum dots, however, is that they can be printed on to a plastic sheet that can rolled up. It is likely these will be small personal devices to begin with.

“Something else we are looking at is reels of wallpaper or curtains made out of a material that has quantum dots printed on it. You can imagine displaying scenes of the sun rising over a beach as you wake up in the morning.”

Although Mr Edelman was unable to reveal which companies Nanoco are working with due to commercial agreements, it is believed that electronics giants Sony, Sharp, Samsung and LG are all working on quantum dot television technology.

Most televisions now produced have a liquid-crystal display (LCD) lit by light-emitting diodes (LED), with the screen two to three inches thick. Replacing the LEDs with quantum dots could reduce the thickness.

Shortages of rare earth elements needed in these displays have driven up production costs, driving electronics firms to look for new ways of making them. Quantum dots are made from cheaper semi-conducting materials that emit light when energised by electricity or ultraviolet light.

By changing the size of the crystals, the researchers found they can manipulate the colour of light they produce.

Placing quantum dots on top of regular LEDs can also help to produce a more natural coloured light and Nanoco working to produce new types of energy efficient light bulbs. They also hope to produce solar powered displays using quantum dots.

Professor Paul O’Brien, an inorganic materials chemist at the University of Manchester who helped top develop the quantum dot technology, said: “By altering the size of the crystals we are able to change the colour they produce.

“It is rather like when you twang a ruler on a desk and the noise changes, the same is happening with the light produced by the quantum dots.

“As the colours are very bright and need little energy it has generated huge excitement in the electronics industry – the quality of display they can produce will be far superior to LCD televisions.”

Optical properties of quantum dot:

Unlike atoms, a quantum dot fabricated from a given material has the unusual property that its energy levels are strongly dependent on its size. For example, CdSequantum dot light emission can be gradually tuned from the red region of spectrum for a 5 nm diameter dot, to the violet region for a 1.5 nm dot. The physical reason for QD coloration is the quantum confinement effect and is directly related to the energy levels of quantum dot. The bandgap energy that determines the energy (and hence color) of the fluorescent light is inversely proportional to the square of the size of quantum dot. Larger QDs have more energy levels which are also more closely spaced, and this allows the QD to absorb photons of smaller energy (redder color). In other words, the emitted photon energy increases as the dot size decreases because greater energy is required to confine the semiconductor excitation to a smaller volume.

What are Crop Circles?

Crop circles are patterns that appear in fields. The pattern is created when certain areas of the crops are tamped down, but others are left intact. The edge is so clean that it looks like it was created with a machine. Even though the stalks are bent, they are not damaged. Most of the time, the crop continues to grow as normal.

Sometimes, the patterns are simple circles. In other instances, they are elaborate designs consisting of several interconnecting geometric shapes.

Farmers have reported finding strange circles in their fields for centuries. The earliest mention of a crop circle dates back to the 1500s. A 17th-century English woodcut shows a devilish creature making a crop circle. People who lived in the area called the creature the “mowing devil.”

Mentions of crop circles were sporadic until the 20th century, when circles began appearing in the 1960s and ’70s in England and the United States. But the phenomenon didn’t gain attention until 1980, when a farmer in Wiltshire County, England, discovered three circles, each about 60 feet (18 meters) across, in his oat crops. UFO researchers and media descended on the farm, and the world first began to learn about crop circles.

Crop Circle Designs

Crop circles are not just circles,they can come in many different shapes. The most basic (and the most common) crop circle is the single circle. Circles may also come in sets of two (doublets), three (triplets) or four (quadruplets). Circles also may be enclosed in a thin outer ring.

The stalks inside a crop circle are typically bent into what is known as a swirl pattern, and the circles may spin clockwise or counterclockwise. In patterns with several circles, one circle may spin clockwise and another counterclockwise. Even a single circle may contain two “layers” of stalks, each spinning in a different direction.

Crop circles can range in size from a few inches to a few hundred feet across. Most early crop circles were simple circular designs. But after 1990, the circles became more elaborate. But crop circles are not confined to England. They have been spotted in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, India and other parts of the world.

The “season” for crop circles runs from April to September, which coincides with the growing season. Circles tend to be created at night, hiding their creators (human or otherwise) from curious eyes.

Crop circles can be found in many different types of fields wheat, corn, oats, rice, oil-seed rape, barley, rye, tobacco even weeds. Most circles are found in low-lying areas close to steep hills, which may explain the wind theory of their creation

Android vs. iOS vs. Windows Phone 7: A mobile showdown

If you’re a first-time smartphone shopper or a current smartphone shopper approaching an upgrade, you may be curious about the mobile platforms that are available. Everyone knows about the iPhoneand iPad, and everyone knows about “Droids” (Android is the platform, Droid is one specific brand on Verizon). Often overlooked is the newcomer, Windows Phone. How do the three mobile operating systems stack up?

We broke down the three platforms into some of the most distinct categories so you can better understand the differences between them. Let’s take a look…

Total Devices

Before delving into the specifics of each operating system, one of the most important things to know is how many devices you’ll have to choose from. The freely distributed Android has the most devices by a wide margin, in fact there are so many that it’s impossible to get an accurate number.

At the time of publication, there are just under 100 Android devices from some of the biggest manufacturers: Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG, Sony Ericsson, and Acer. But when you add Asus, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Toshiba, and a billion generic or near-generic manufacturers, that total is easily into the hundreds.

Meanwhile the younger Windows Phone currently tallies 20 devices, and less-is-more iOS is only available on the 11 models of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Total apps

iOS leads the way with apps. Not only are there more apps in the App Store than in the Android Market, but there is generally more quality and less junk on Apple’s platform (a highly unscientific observation). This could be changing, as the flood of Android devices has led to the lion’s share of the smartphone market. While analysts have been predicting that Android will catch up for over a year now, it hasn’t happened.

The Windows Phone Marketplace is the newest of the three platforms, and hasn’t yet found the mass adoption of iOS or Android. When viewed from that light, 43,000+ isn’t a bad number of apps for Microsoft’s mobile platform.

Tablet-optimized apps

It’s no coincidence that the market-dominating iPad has the most tablet-optimized apps. Android tablets have been stuck in a vicious Catch-22, where they aren’t selling because they don’t have as many apps, but developers aren’t making apps because they aren’t selling. That will likely change soon (thanks in no small part to the Kindle Fire), but right now the iPad’s app library is utterly dominant.

It’s worth noting that the iPad and Android tablets can all run smaller-screen phone apps, but they look better on Android than they do on iOS. The iPad doubles the pixels of iPhone apps, making them look as pixelated as an Atari game (not really, but they definitely don’t look great). While most Android phone apps don’t look so hot stretched to fit a large display, they still look much better than iPhone apps on the iPad. Taking this into consideration, Android tablets have a bit more software support than the above figures suggest.

Windows Phone doesn’t run on tablets, instead Microsoft is preparing Windows 8 for future tablets.

Unapproved 3rd party apps

Casual users may not worry about this stat, but if you want maximum freedom in the software you install, you’ll want to pay attention. Apple and Microsoft both employ the walled garden approach, with apps needing to go through an approval process before being made available for iOS or Windows Phone. The Android Market, meanwhile, allows most anything (aside from malicious content) and you can also install 3rd party apps by sideloading or downloading from the web.

iOS and Windows Phone devices require a jailbreak (hack) in order to install unapproved apps. Some Android apps that need core system permissions will require a rooted device, but Android is the obvious victor in terms of app freedom.

You can argue that Android’s psuedo-open approach also has downfalls, like a glut of crap apps and less protection from malware, but that’s a debate for another time.

4G

Android is the (present moment) king of 4G. It was first to 4G with Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G, first to LTE with Verizon’s HTC Thunderbolt, and has tons of phones available on all 4G networks.

It’s a stretch to say iOS has 4G, but the AT&T version of the iPhone 4S is capable of HSPA+14.4Mbps speeds, same as the Motorola Atrix, LG Thrill, and HTC Inspire on Android.

Windows Phone has three 4G devices, the Samsung Focus S 4G, Samsung Focus Flash 4G, and HTC Radar 4G. Each runs on either AT&T’s or T-Mobile’s HSPA+ networks.

This will change soon, as the next iPhone will probably adopt LTE, and Windows Phone will also eventually expand into that realm.

One downside to consider is that LTE devices aren’t, at this moment, particularly battery-friendly. It’s slowly improving, but runtime is a concern on every LTE device on the market.

Cloud integration

One of the buzzwords of 2011, the cloud lets you store your data on remote servers. It can save precious flash storage and help you to effortlessly keep multiple devices in sync. Google is no stranger to the cloud, with Gmail and its numerous free web-based services (Google Music, Google Docs, Google Voice). Aside from contact syncing and limited app backups, Android doesn’t have an integrated cloud service. Android users can, however, use third-party apps like Dropbox or Box.net to access cloud files.

Introduced in this Fall’s iOS 5 release, iCloud serves less as direct file storage and more as an invisible syncing of content. Photos, music, contacts, reminders, browser bookmarks, notes, documents, calendar events, and some third-party app content will all stay synced up between iOS devices and Macs. You can also backup your entire device via iCloud. Defined by the lack of effort it requires, iCloud is easily the most advanced — yet simple — cloud service for any device.

Microsoft’s SkyDrive is its cloud service, but it isn’t nearly as seamless as iCloud. It doesn’t even come preinstalled on Windows Phone, requiring a marketplace download. Like third-party service Dropbox, SkyDrive is more of a file locker than an invisible syncing service. It requires manual file transfers, so photos, documents, and other data won’t invisibly sync in the background like they do in iCloud.

Voice control

Android and Windows Phone have had limited voice control for ages, but Apple stole their thunder with the arrival of Siri.

Google is reportedly scrambling to come up with its own answer to Siri, but right now Apple’s assistant is in a different league than Android Voice Commands or Microsoft’s Tellme. While the other two platforms allow for dictation and specific voice commands, Siri lets you speak in natural language. It isn’t perfect, and it will improve over the next few years, but it’s more far-reaching, it creates the illusion of a conversation, and it rids you of the burden of memorizing specific commands.

The only catch with Siri is that, at this moment, it’s only available on the iPhone 4S. By this time next year, though, Siri will likely be on the iPad 3, iPhone 5, and possibly a new iPod touch. It’s unknown whether Apple will retroactively port Siri to the iPhone 4 and other older devices, but we wouldn’t bet on it.

Multitasking

While they use different methods, all three platforms now have multitasking. Power users will insist that only Android offers true multitasking, but for most of us, the app-switching experience will be the same on iOS and Windows Phone.

All offer switching between apps — playing music, GPS navigation, VoIP calls, email notifications, and many other tasks to happen in the background.

Navigation

All platforms offer a variety of voiced turn-by-turn GPS navigation options, but Android has a big advantage. Google Maps Navigation, which is excellent and integrated with Android Voice Commands, is free. There is a growing number of free and cheap navigation apps for all platforms, but few rival Google’s service.

Search

Being Google’s platform, Android is tied to Google search. Few people have a problem with that. Being Microsoft’s platform, Windows Phone is tied to Bing. Many people would have a problem with that.

While those platforms offer search that is integrated into the OS, iOS requires you to open the browser to search. The caveat to add is that iPhone 4S owners can search the web from anywhere by querying Siri to “search the web for ___.’ iOS defaults to Google, but also gives you the option to switch the default search engine to Yahoo! or Bing.

Dual-core devices

In addition to LTE and the cloud, 2011 also saw the advent of dual-core mobile devices. Much like 4G, Android’s greater volume of devices has it leading the charge here too. We could nail down the exact number of dual-core Android devices, but after a week or two the stat would be obsolete. Just know that Android has many more than iOS or Windows Phone.

Apple’s iPad 2 and iPhone 4S both have the dual-core A5 chip. Windows Phone is still waiting for its first dual-core device.

Custom firmware

Most casual users won’t care about custom firmware, but those who want to fiddle with customROMs will gravitate towards Android. There is an active development community with multiple amateur geniuses releasing their own custom versions of Android every day.

Jailbroken iOS devices simply run the same iOS with the Cydia jailbreak app store installed. Windows Phone hacking is still in its infancy, but is more similar to iOS’s jailbreak community than Android’s development scene.

Third-party keyboard apps

Typing on a virtual keyboard can be a pain. It’s easy to tap out the wrong word, and built-inautocorrect suggestions can sometimes do more harm than good. Having the option of using innovative new keyboards can be a perk.

Right now Android is the only platform that lets you customize the on-screen keyboard. In addition to the default Android keyboard (or default manufacturer keyboard), you can choose to install a trace keyboard like Swype or SlideIt, a prediction algorithm keyboard like Swiftkey, or even a bizarre gesture-based keyboard like 8pen.

NFC

While Near Field Communication (usually used for mobile payments) hasn’t quite taken off with retailers (yet), it’s a nice future-proofing feature to have on your phone. Android currently has a small handful of phones with NFC chips (including the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S), but it still trumps the number of NFC devices that the other platforms have: zero.

Showcase phones

Reading about the three platforms is one thing, but it always helps to see each in action. If you’re heading to a store to get some hands-on time, you’ll want to compare the best that each has to offer.

For Android, that’s the Galaxy Nexus. As Google’s latest flagship device, it runs the latest version of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich), has a gorgeous 4.65 inch SuperAMOLED display, and it runs on Verizon’s speedy LTE network in the US.

The iPhone 4S is Apple’s showcase phone. While it wasn’t the revolutionary iPhone 5 that many were hoping for, it still offers significant upgrades, including Siri, a dual-core A5 processor, and an 8MP camera.

The Lumia 800 is the flagship phone that Windows Phone has been needing, but, unfortunately, it’s still only available in Europe. Microsoft and Nokia have shown tentativeness in entering the US market, with the Lumia 800′s inferior little brother, the Lumia 710, set to lead the way. If you can get your hands on the Lumia 800, it has solid specs and runs the latest version of Windows Phone, Mango.

Showcase tablets

While it isn’t officially endorsed by Google as a flagship tablet, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Primeis, at this moment, the best tablet that runs Android. It packs a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, an impressive display, and it will run Ice Cream Sandwich sometime in January.

Until the iPad 3 arrives in a few months, the iPad 2 is obviously the Apple flagship tablet (aside from the original iPad, it’s the only Apple tablet). It has a slick (and thin) design, the dual-core A5 processor, and Apple’s unparalleled library of tablet apps.

Windows Phone isn’t designed for tablets; Windows 8 will eventually be Microsoft’s tablet OS.

Intangibles

What is that extra something that each platform offers? Each OS has its own unique identity, and these help to define what that is.

Android is often mocked for being “open-y” (basically not as open as Google would like you to believe), but it is unquestionably the most customizable and hacker-friendly mobile platform of these three. It’s the only one of the bunch that lets you install homebrewed versions of Android. You can install homescreen widgets, swap keyboards, use live (animated) wallpaper, upgrade outdated devices to the latest version of Android, and tinker with about a billion other things.

iOS, meanwhile, is on the polar opposite side of the spectrum. Walled Garden is a term you often hear when describing Apple products, and it’s appropriate. Step through the gates of the magic Apple kingdom, and enjoy the simple and intuitive experience that the company has excruciatingly crafted for you.

Apple doesn’t want you to tinker. This means that all third-party apps need Apple’s approval, the UI is congruous and tight, and your experience has been prepared for you. Jailbreaking breaks those walls and lets you tinker almost as much as with an Android phone, but that isn’t the way an Apple product comes out of the box.

Windows Phone, meanwhile, is still searching for an identity. Its stance on open vs. closed is much closer to Apple’s, but if it defines itself by only that it will always be in iOS’s shadow. It arguably has the most attractive UI of the three platforms, but that’s too subjective to be a true killer feature.

One thing that draws (some) users to Windows Phone is the Microsoft Office suite. While Microsoft is reportedly developing the apps for the iPad, Windows Phone already includes the suite for free. Unless you’re a hardcore Office user, we wouldn’t recommend basing a smartphone purchase on an office suite alone (the other platforms have quality suites too). But, at this point in its progression, it’s the biggest thing Windows Phone can advertise as being truly unique.

Summing up

We aren’t here to crown a victor in the mobile OS wars. If anything, sales will determine that. From that perspective, Android handily leads in market share, but the iPhone and iPad are the hottest-selling individual devices. But — apart from sports, elections, and other competitions — we don’t live in a world of universal champions. The best platform is whichever OS works for you.

The two big dogs — Android and iOS — each offers its own clear take on the mobile OS experience. The rivalry closely resembles that of Windows vs. Macintosh: one is closed and tied to specific hardware, the other is licensed and available on everything under the sun. Apple is playing the same part, but Google’s OS has replaced Microsoft in the other role.

Whether Microsoft can rebound and make this a three-way race remains to be seen; it’s a steep hill to climb, and the company’s hesitance to enter the US market with its Nokia partnership doesn’t bode well. But smartphones aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, and the company will have years to stage its attempted comeback.

Lately I’ve noticed a number of articles with gripes and groans about the Android user experience, the way interfaces are designed, the usability of Android apps, and a lack of satisfaction with the whole Android ecosystem.

As someone who works on day-to-day basis with usability testing and user experience design, my interest was piqued. Were these users just iPhone users who expressed dissatisfaction after a brief flirtation with Android, or was there something deeper going on?

I can’t honestly say I’ve had a lot of experience with Android – although I do own two iOS devices – so I couldn’t write off these concerns one way or another. But rather than basing it off a few, possibly biased opinions, it seemed the fairest way to compare the two was to set up a quick usability test.

A/B Testing and Preference Testing

This particular tests uses two different questions types; an A/B test, and a Preference test.

An A/B test is where you are presented with either image A or B (not both) to see how you interact with it in isolation. When looking at the results you get a fair comparison between A and B, and thus have a fair idea of how the two different designs or interfaces compare. It’s easy to judge which interface is the winner if it takes users a lot longer to interact with one than the other, or if they frequently select the wrong location or button for a simple task.

A Preference test has the two designs or interfaces side by side. This is a bit more of a popularity contest, but in the interests of fairness I’ve obscured the ‘status bar’ (the bar at the top) of both the iOS and Android apps in the preference test in order to try to eliminate people’s personal, preconceived preferences. When looking at the results, we can hopefully detect a trend about which interfaces or designs people prefer.

I know there are many people out there firmly on one side or other of this debate, but hopefully this test might help you to reconsider your preconceived notions.

The Test and Results

For each of the apps in the test, I tried to think of a very simple, common task that people might be trying to perform. If it works out that people take roughly the same amount of time to complete each task, or it works out that there is a huge difference between the two platforms or even from app to app, then we can start to form some judgements about what is going right or wrong, and which platform is more or less usable

On to the questions and results:

1) The Twitter App: How would you view your @ messages?

If you are a Twitter user, and even if you’re not, you are probably familiar with the @ message protocol. For those who aren’t, @ messages are the method you use for contacting other users on twitter. For example, if you wanted to contact me, you could send a message to @IntuitionHQ.

As a very simple, very common task, this should really take no time to complete. As it’s the first question in the test, we might expect people to take a few seconds longer as they are familiarising themselves with the interface.

The results for both for the Android and iOS versions were very similar; the most surprising thing here was the amount of people who clicked the direct message button instead of the @ message button. I guess Twitter still isn’t quite as popular as I may think.

2) Google Translate: How would you change the target language from German to another language?

Changing languages is obviously a core piece of functionality for a translation app, and should be quick and easy to do. Lets see what the results show:

Again, quite similar results. The Android version had a shorter response time at the time of writing by 2 seconds (possibly because of the addition of the arrows on the dropdown?) but also had slightly bigger spread of results. More or less a tie for these two.

3) Google Translate: How would you listen to the German audio pronunciation?

This is one of the really handy features of the Google Translate app – you can make it talk to you in a ton of different languages. Extremely useful when you are travelling or trying to learn a new language, and a common task within the app.

This is the first time (at the time of writing) that there is a bit more of a spread in the results. The Android app had a longer click time (average of 12 seconds), but an 80% success rate, whereas the iOS app had an average click time of 6.42 seconds but only a 52% success rate.

Regardless of click time, a 52% success rate isn’t nearly high enough, and so the Android version wins this battle. The Android app Speaker icon must be clearer to most users.

4) Soundhound: How would you share this song?

Soundhound is a handy app for finding the name of songs you are listening to but (obviously) don’t know the name of. The social aspect is obviously a big part of making a successful app in this day and age, so it’s essential that users can find and understand these task very quickly.

Interesting results; although the click success percentage is more or less the same (93% to 95%), the average click time is really very different. The iOS version took around 13 seconds longer in our test than the Android version. A win for Android.

5) Soundhound: How could you purchase this track?

Buying the songs that you’ve gone to the effort of finding is another handy feature of this app. How does the music purchasing stack up?

Android is slightly ahead here, with an average click time of 5.83 seconds to the iOS versions 7.64, and a success rate of 100% to iOS’ 90%. Still a win for Android, but I’ll give half a point to iOS for still a very strong results.

Android 5 – iOS 2.5

6) Pandora: Which interface do you prefer?

This is a preference test to see how users feel about the different designs of the Android and iOS apps. I’ve removed the status bar at the top of the apps in order to make people think a little more about which is the Android or iOS version of each app.

And now the results for the first of our preference tests; it couldn’t be any closer with both the Android and iOS versions of the app getting 17 clicks each. A draw.

Android 6 – iOS 3.5

7) Pandora: How would you pause this track?

A very common task in any music listening application; I’d expect a very strong response on this question.

The results here (perhaps unexpectedly) are both very strong. Both apps had a 100% success rate, and with just over half a second between the average click times (3.64-2.86 seconds) I’m going to give both apps a point for this test.

Android 7 – iOS 4.5

8) Geocaching: Which interface do you prefer?

Another comparison between an Android and iOS interface, this time for the official Geocaching app. Geocaching – for those who don’t know, is a process where you navigate to certain GPS coordinates in order to find a hidden ‘cache’.

The designs of the two are further apart than some of the designs we’ve seen, so it will be interesting to see what the results show up.

Another overwhelming result, but this time to the iOS versions – 91% of respondents preferred the iOS version of this app.

Android 7 – iOS 5.5

9) Geocaching: Please select the cache you’ve previously found:

Once you’ve found a certain cache, you tag it in the app and it then shows up as previously discovered. This is a quick test to see if that is easily noticeable in the Android and iOS apps.

An interesting result here. The click time for both apps was very similar, but the success rate for the iOS version was only 40% compared 100% for the Android version. Quite surprising to me that there was such a big difference between these two, but there we are. A win for Android.

Android 8 – iOS 5.5

10) Facebook: Which interface do you prefer?

Another preference test with an app that most people would be familiar with. Facebook has made a couple of changes between these two apps, and it will be interesting to see what the results show about the differences

Definitely the majority support the iOS version of the Facebook app here. I wonder how much of this is because they are already familiar with the design? The final results was 74% for iOS and 26% for Android. A win for iOS.

Android 8 – iOS 6.5

11) Facebook: How would you view your friend requests

Facebook is all about friends, so accepting requests is core functionality for this app. It may only make a few seconds difference, but every part of the user experience counts.

An extremely close result here, and in fact any of the selected areas allow you to view your friend requests. Considering the results are within a quarter of a second, I’m going to call this one a tie.

Android 9 – iOS 7.5

What does it all mean?

So the final result (as of writing) is Android 9 and iOS 7.5; you can also view the most recent usability test results yourself to form your own conclusions.

What we can conclude though, is that Android and iOS are very similar in terms of usability, at least in the apps we have tested. Of course, there are apps on both platforms that are really very well designed, and apps which should never have been let into the store/market. Neither platform is immune to poorly designed apps.

One difference that also needs to be considered as part of the user experience is the hardware, and this is where some issues come to the fore. Although you can buy very high quality Android phones, you can also buy very cheap, very poorly designed phones which can cause a terrible UX. One thing you have to admit about Apple is that their hardware is of a very high (and well designed) quality.

Regardless, this test shows that with the right hardware and software combination, both of these mobile operating systems can shine, and really which you choose can come down to personal preference, without worrying about a huge gap between the two platforms. Either way, you should be a happy camper.

7 Habits of Highly Innovative People

Have you ever looked at super creative or innovative people, and felt they are special beings blessed with gifts? Have you felt that you are not as fortunate? I used to feel this way. I have since learned that creativity is more about psychology than intellect, and there are no secrets to being creative. Actually, there is no such thing as “being more creative”, you are already a creative being.

I’m sure we can all relate to moments when we felt stuck trying to tap into our own creativity. Did you know that this block is merely your mind at work? Your mind is creating all sorts of assumptions, self-imposed constraints and self-limiting inhibitions. I have found that we can remove these assumptions just by being in the moment; start doing, and stop thinking.

Here are seven habits found in highly innovative and creative people that I’ve organized and summarized from Scott Berkun‘s “the myths of innovation“.

1. Persistence – Innovation involves more than just great ideas. We need faith, hard work and a laser sharp focus for the end result to keep persisting for our vision in the face of roadblocks. We tend to see the end result of a creative idea in awe, but what we don’t see are the actions, hard work and persistence behind the scene to make the vision a reality.

2. Remove Self-Limiting Inhibitions – Under the spell of inhibition, we feel limited and stuck. We need to free ourselves from these mind-created constraints by removing assumptions and restrictions. This is what we refer to when we say “think outside the box”. Encourage ourselves to be open to new ideas and solutions without setting limiting beliefs. Remember, innovation is more about psychology than intellect.

3. Take Risks, Make Mistakes – I believe that part of the reason why we create self-imposed inhibition is due to our fear of failure. Expect that some ideas will fail in the process of learning. Build prototypes often, test them out on people, gather feedback, and make incremental changes. Rather than treating the mistakes as failures, think of them as experiments. “Experiment is the expected failure to deliberately learn something.” (Scott Berkun). Instead of punishing yourself for the failures, accept them, then take your newfound knowledge and put it towards finding the best solution. Live up to your goal of producing the best result, but understand you might hit roadblocks along the way.

4. Escape – Our environment can and does effect how we feel. The more relaxed and calm we are internally, the more receptive we are to tap into our flowing creativity. This is why ideas sometimes come to us in the shower or while we’re alone. Each of us have different triggers to access our creative energy. I get into the ‘creative zone’ from sitting at my dining table, with a warm cup of chai, and my noise-canceling headphones. Many great thinkers go on long walks to help them solve problems. Experiment and find what works for you.

5. Writing Things Down – Many innovators and creative people keep a journal to jot down ideas and thoughts. Some keep a sketch book, scrap book, post-it notes, loose paper. They all have a method to capture their thoughts, to think on paper, to drop their inhibitions and start the creative process. Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous notebook was purchased by Bill Gates for $30.8 Million dollars.

6. Find Patterns & Create Combinations – Ideas come from other ideas. Did you know that Edison wasn’t the first one who came up with the invention of the light bulb? He was the first to build a workable carbon filament inside a glass bulb, that made light bulbs last longer. You can increase your exposure to new ideas, look for patterns and see how you can combine ideas to improve upon existing solutions.

7. Curiosity – Many innovators are just curious people who are inquisitive, and like to solve problems. Practice seeing things differently. For example, When seeing the solution to a problem, ask yourself, “What are some alternative ways to doing this?”. Ask a lot of questions and challenge the norms or existing methods.
