With some help from white transfer paper, we were able to decorate plain IKEA candles with our own designs...

If you’ve ever worked with transfer paper, you know how easy it is to use. It is the best way to trace a temporary design onto a surface to serve as a guide for your artwork. However, I did some experimenting with it and discovered that it not only takes really well to the surface of wax candles, but it doesn’t rub off either. My kids and I were able to transfer our original designs to some plain IKEA candles to make a few end-of-the-year teacher gifts. We did freehand designs, but you could transfer a pattern from fabric, a monogram, a photograph — pretty much anything — just by tracing your design over the transfer paper.

Transfer paper comes in several colors, but I chose to work with white.

You can add a special message, date or name — it's so easy.

For this project I used: white transfer paper (available at art supply and craft stores), plain candles, a piece of paper, a ballpoint pen and scissors.

Cut out a piece of transfer paper and a piece of plain paper to fit to circumference and height of the candle.

First wrap the candle in the transfer paper, tape end down to hold in place.

Cover the transfer paper with the plain paper, tape in place.

Using the ballpoint pen, draw your design on the paper. I found the best way to work on the candle was to lay it on its side. I also placed the candle on top of a pillow, with a towel over the pillow. This creates a softer surface to work on so that less of the transfer paper will accidentally rub off. You will want to use good pressure to insure that the designs transfers.

Remove the two papers and you'll see your design.

Kids can do this in a flash.

I love my daughter's flower drawings — they look great on these candles.

Rock salt is dyed with food coloring to create an interesting candlestick...

If you live in the Chicagoland area you don’t fully discount the need for rock salt until the beginning of June (only a slight exaggeration). I figured it was safe to experiment with that half-full bag of rock salt I had on the back porch – the threat of snow is behind us now.

If you’re looking for a unique way to add color to your table, I don’t think it gets cheaper or easier than this…

Rock salt is easily dyed with food coloring.

This treatment makes the rock salt look like quartz.

I’ve got a bracelet thing going on these days – can’t stop making them. A few of my husband’s old shirts sparked the idea for this quick project…

A men's shirt cuff takes on a new use as a chunky bracelet.

For this project you will need: an old button down shirt, thread, a sewing needle and an iron-on appliqué (available at craft stores and online).

To begin, cut off the cuff of the shirt. Be sure to cut along the seam to create a clean edge.

To create a fit that works for your wrist, move the button in a bit.

Find the center of the cuff on your wrist and iron on the appliqué.

For this project you will need: cotton utility rope (sold by the bag at Home Depot and in grocery stores), craft paint and a flat paintbrush.

To make the bracelets, measure out a length that will fit your wrist with a few inches added on (you are making a bangle, so you want these to slip on easily – but stay on too).
Holding the bracelet taut in your hand, start painting. I highly recommend using a flat paintbrush for this – it will help you make straight, clean edges.

Try making these cool brocade bracelets...

No sewing needed for this easy project; bohemian-style bracelets are made in moments from brocade trim, hot glue and velcro…

The older kids can make these on their own – they are so simple.

Make a few and pile them on – they look great in bunches.

I got my trim at Joann Fabric and Crafts Stores ($8.99 – $14.99 for 9 foot spools). You can also check garage sales, Etsy and EBay for vintage trim too.

For this project you will need: brocade trim (available by the yard or spool at fabric and craft supply stores), velcro and a glue gun.

Cut brocade trim to a length that will fit your wrist with about a 1-inch seam allowance.

To finish the ends, fold ends in (about 1/2 inch) and glue down with hot glue.

Hot glue Velcro pieces to each end – one on top and one underneath so the ends will lay flat when your bracelet is closed.

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. Congratulations to Melissa from Birmingham, AL!

Take a few minutes to check out Rachel Khoo’s Little Paris Kitchen on The Cooking Channel and you’ll become a fan straight away. I first discovered her show a few months ago and have been following her ever since. Rachel is a British chef living in Paris; a food creative with a contagious passion for creating beauty in the kitchen. What I find appealing, is the way she makes French cooking seem so doable. Rachel creates beautiful dishes that are homey and down to earth—nothing too fussy—but always quite elegant. Her show is filmed from her tiny and very charming Paris apartment. She prepares and serves incredible meals in extremely cramped quarters with just a mini oven and a small two-burner stovetop. Check out the following clip and you’ll see what I mean…

“The Little Paris Kitchen – 120 Simple But Classic French Recipes” (Chronicle Books, 2012) contains easy instructions for creating familiar French dishes like coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon, but Rachel puts her creative twist on these traditional meals and makes them so much more approachable. She also has a ton of truly different salad dishes and sweet and savory open-faced sandwich recipes that can be prepared in under 20 minutes and look like a million bucks. In addition to stunning photography and lovely illustrations, tucked in here and there, are heartwarming stories about her life in France. Rachel shares her favorite places to shop for culinary supplies and background information about French culture. I love a cookbook like this one—it’s inspiring and not intimidating at all.

After spending the afternoon pouring over Rachel’s amazing book, I got myself into the kitchen to try my hand at a few of her recipes. I made her winter salad with goat’s cheese mousse and eggs in pots—both had a prep time of under 30 minutes and turned out great.

I love egg dishes – they're perfect for a satisfying meal at any time of day. These oeufs en cocotte (eggs in pots) are simple to make, taste amazing and present well. Crème Fraîche and eggs are seasoned with salt, pepper, nutmeg and chopped dill, baked in ramekins (or teacups) and topped with fish roe and fresh dill. Everyone loved this one (image from The Little Paris Kitchen).

Looking forward to trying her potato and pear galette with Roquefort (image from The Little Paris Kitchen).
