Transfer paper comes in several colors, but I chose to work with white.

You can add a special message, date or name — it's so easy.

For this project I used: white transfer paper (available at art supply and craft stores), plain candles, a piece of paper, a ballpoint pen and scissors.

Cut out a piece of transfer paper and a piece of plain paper to fit to circumference and height of the candle.

First wrap the candle in the transfer paper, tape end down to hold in place.

Using the ballpoint pen, draw your design on the paper. I found the best way to work on the candle was to lay it on its side. I also placed the candle on top of a pillow, with a towel over the pillow. This creates a softer surface to work on so that less of the transfer paper will accidentally rub off. You will want to use good pressure to insure that the designs transfers.

Remove the two papers and you'll see your design.

Kids can do this in a flash.

I love my daughter's flower drawings — they look great on these candles.

Patriotic snacking has never been easier – just mix star-shaped crackers with pretzel sticks.

I found the star-shaped crackers in the same aisle where you find Goldfish.

I'm so happy with the way these turned out. Basic white IKEA frames ($19.99 each) helped to finish the look.

These were originally meant to hang in my daughter's room, but my husband hijacked them for his office at work. We decided to give them to him as an early Father's Day gift – everyone was happy.

The total cost for everything was $72.00.

Rock salt is easily dyed with food coloring.

This treatment makes the rock salt look like quartz.

For this project you will need: rock salt, food coloring and a thick ziplock bag.

Place desired amount of rock salt in a heavy-duty ziplock bag.

Add several drops of food coloring to salt. The more you add, the darker the hue. Seal bag.

Gently massage bag to coat the salt with the food coloring.

The salt won't be damp – but the food coloring will come off on your hands if you handle it too soon. Allow salt to dry in open containers for about 10 minutes.

To create this amethyst color, I mixed blue and red food coloring in the bag first, then I added the salt.

When not in use, you can store your colored salt in ziplock bags.

I love the way the purple turned out – it really does look like amethyst.

A men's shirt cuff takes on a new use as a chunky bracelet.

For this project you will need: an old button down shirt, thread, a sewing needle and an iron-on appliqué (available at craft stores and online).

To begin, cut off the cuff of the shirt. Be sure to cut along the seam to create a clean edge.

To create a fit that works for your wrist, move the button in a bit.

Find the center of the cuff on your wrist and iron on the appliqué.

This would make a fun party project.

The nice thing about this project is that you could make these for boys too (use sports themed iron-ons).

Painted rope bangles need no closures – they just slip on and off the wrist.

The knots on this necklace are painted to look like beads.

Stripes add interest and contrast.

A great little piece to wear in the summer.

For this project you will need: cotton utility rope (sold by the bag at Home Depot and in grocery stores), craft paint and a flat paintbrush.

To make the bracelets, measure out a length that will fit your wrist with a few inches added on (you are making a bangle, so you want these to slip on easily – but stay on too). You can leave it smooth or decorate with simple knots. Tie the ends closed and trim excess rope.

Holding the bracelet taut in your hand, start painting. I highly recommend using a flat paintbrush for this – it will help you make straight, clean edges.

Paint one section at a time – allowing to dry about 15 – 30 minutes in between. I used a clothespin to keep the painted rope elevated while it dried.

To paint the necklace, I clipped the rope to a firm paper plate that had a deep rim. To paint the other side, just turn the rope and clip back on. The necklace can dry this way too.

If you're like me, you're going to try to fit in a bit of gardening this weekend. Try recycling some leftover burlap or coffee bean bags to line your wire planters instead of using coconut liner.

Help the kids make colorful parade noisemakers from wooden spatulas.

The older kids can make these on their own – they are so simple.

Make a few and pile them on – they look great in bunches.

I got my trim at Joann Fabric and Crafts Stores ($8.99 – $14.99 for 9 foot spools). You can also check garage sales, Etsy and EBay for vintage trim too.

For this project you will need: brocade trim (available by the yard or spool at fabric and craft supply stores), velcro and a glue gun.

Cut brocade trim to a length that will fit your wrist with about a 1-inch seam allowance.

To finish the ends, fold ends in (about 1/2 inch) and glue down with hot glue.

Hot glue Velcro pieces to each end – one on top and one underneath so the ends will lay flat when your bracelet is closed.

To make sure the Velcro is secure, allow glue to dry for at least 15 minutes before wearing.

My daughter loves these.

I love egg dishes – they're perfect for a satisfying meal at any time of day. These oeufs en cocotte (eggs in pots) are simple to make, taste amazing and present well. Crème Fraîche and eggs are seasoned with salt, pepper, nutmeg and chopped dill, baked in ramekins (or teacups) and topped with fish roe and fresh dill.
