And it is also uniquely different. For first time visitors, the difference can be shocking after leaving your cherished confort zone.

It is important to be prepared for your trip long before you set off. Long trips are hard to plan and it is impossible not to forget something important in your plans however meticulous you are. The only thing you can do is to hope that whatever you forget is not too serious. This human nature should not stop you from making sure everything has been worked out.

Here are some Travel tips and advice for the everyday Safari traveller. Take a look and add this to the often tired holiday-check-list that you might have already. Here are a few truths; Africa is mostly warm, but nights can be very cold. There are few places with seasonal sub-zero degrees especially mountain tops. Public transport is not reliable in terms of time keeping. Many of them run on unscheduled trips. Those that do are premium services, but still ridiculously cheap. Traffic rule enforcement can be lax. Drive as if you are the only sane person on the road.

It is not true that people are savages who don't value human life-just because you see those violent clashes on TV. The continent has its own share of thugs and zealots. It is not true that those poor women selling handicraft through the windows of the safari vans are vagabonds, that is the propaganda from the van drivers who are paid commission by directing you to more established safari dealers. You will be doing them a great favour to buy from them rather than buy from the rich kiosk owners strategically placed in convenient locations.

Here are a few things to remember. Always keep mobile phones and valuables like jewelry out of sight. They tend to attract the wrong kinds of people. Some street criminals snatch these items for sale. Travel light and keep your luggage close at hand at all times and in sight if possible. Make sure you have contact numbers for the people involved in your safari trip: your family, your safari hotel, your tour agent, the foreign office and the local police. On buses and trains, try sitting near other people in a busy carriage. Don't walk in alleys alone. Actually keep within the Central Business District of all major cities such as Nairobi and Kenya. Rural villages and towns are very safe because everybody is known to each other. If you lose something, the local leaders will apprehend the culprit.

Telephones are expensive and rare. It might help for you to carry your mobile phone. But I advise you to buy a local Pay As You Go phone the moment you land. It is cheaper to use the local phone than getting charged 10 times more by using your phone abroad. Once you buy, text your friends and family and tell them you have a new phone. Make sure the phone is charged at the hotel before you go and buy an extra top up voucher. In most countries, Pay As You Go are very cheap. You can get one of these cheap models for as little as 40 dollars, line and air time included. Texts from East Africa to UK cost about 20 pence per text. But it is about 80 pence if you use a UK connected phone.

There are other news sources that you can read before you depart for your destination. The starting point is to visit the Government's Foreign office to see if there is any travel advisories. Sometimes the advisories can be too general and not reflect the true picture on the ground. For example, whereas tour operators might be going about their business even when there is a political issue like the recent political fighting, the Foreign Office hoped to lift the advisory only after the whole scenario has been sorted in the street and in parliament. A shrewd traveller could have easily picked this time to travel because beds were empty at great discounts - almost free in fact.

Understandably so, the Government is slow to approve such situations because they fear backlash if something happened. There are many sites detailing the current news, current events, exchange rate, language, history, customs, types of food, art and festivals of the world's countries, at least one of which will have something for you. Besides, The Web can help you find the best deals on safari flights, accommodation or complete package safari holidays. Instead of spending time searching for a holiday, users can use the web to get the perfect holiday deal sent to them.

Most banks and travel agents now offer currency services and you can expect to pay around one or two percent of the total amount in commission. When thinking about a destination, think about whether you want hot or cold weather, something relaxed or active. Check that your credit card or travellers checks are accepted by the banks at your destination. Banks are only in major towns. There are accredited Foreign exchange Bureaus in countries such as Kenya and they do give better rates than hotels and Banks. But be careful, conmen and street money changes are many.

If you are web savvy, keep a diary or a safari blog of your holiday travels. Keep the family informed where you are. Keep a copy of the signed and valid passport, and a visa and copies of the itinerary, if required, with a family friend. Give them emergency numbers too.

Lastly, always check your overseas medical insurance coverage and ensure it is adequate. If you have money, there are world-class medical facilities available including the flying doctor. I am not proud of this but I must say that, contrary to myths, these facilities do exist although poor locals can not afford them.

It is indeed a follow-up of what they say in the army, ?the more you sweat in peace the less you bleed in war?. The truth is that there's no alternative to training, be it army, sports or adventure.

Different activities and sports make specific demands on your body, so it pays to know which muscles you are going to need and how to make them stronger long before you leave home. Adventure holidays don't come cheap, and you won't get the most out of your trip if you spend half of it suffering from aching thighs or sore shoulders.

TREKKING

The best preparation is to head for the hills. Go for long weekend walks in Snowdonia, the Lakes or the Scottish Highlands. Gradually increase your pace and take routes that require rambling. Initially, you may feel comfortable to start from a B&B but follow this up with a camping routine. Remember, getting ready from within a tent does require more effort.

In the Himalayas, trekking is often at varied gradient, sometimes over moraine and at times over high altitude. And the pattern of the day will be different, too. You will be up at dawn and on your way before Sun.

Most adventure travel companies have their treks graded from mild, that involves about four to six hours' walking a day, through moderate with the occasional steep path to expedition grade. Different tour companies use different terms, so read the small print to know what you are letting yourself in for.

Ramblers Association organises regular walks all over the country. They also produce a useful handbook and accommodation guide for the UK.

Essential gear

Comfortable walking boots that you have worn already. I recommend leather over the fabric-panelled, which, in my experience, don't stay waterproof once the boot is worn in.

Sun glasses or shades to protect the eyes.

Clothing in three layers ? thermals, a fleece and a breathable waterproof jacket and trousers.

Mattress or Thermarest inflatable mattress and four-season, down-filled sleeping bag with a full-length zip.

CLIMBING

There are two types of mountain climbing: technical climbing with ropes over rocks, or climbing during trekking over snow and ice at high altitudes. For the Himalayas, you will need to prepare for the effects of high altitude. Most Himalayan climbers now prefer running to get their lungs intake more oxygen and stabilise their pulse beat below their normal rate. You will also need to prepare your upper body, so pull-ups are a good idea. Long distance walking with a rucksack will ready your muscles.

British Mountaineering Council for more information about local clubs. Check at sports centres with a climbing wall about tuition. Scotland and Wales are the best places in the UK to practise winter climbing.

Essential gear

Most operators will send a list of gear provided by them and what you must take with you.

Walking boots that you have worn already.

Clothing in three layers ? full thermal layer, a good quality fleece and a gortex waterproof jacket and trousers.

CANOEING

Canoeing can be of different types. It is important to consider the type of trip you are doing and in what vessel. Are you going on a long-distance river trip or dealing with technical white water? And will you be in a kayak or a canoe?

For a kayak, that requires sitting with legs forward in a closed-in boat with a double-ended paddle, you'll need flexible hamstrings to keep sitting comfortably.

For a canoe, where you?ll be kneeling in an open boat with a single-ende
d paddle, you?ll need a strong lower back and stomach because you are twisting to paddle on either side of the boat.

Few gyms have machines to simulate paddling, but any aerobic-based exercise, such as rowing or running, is good for endurance.

The British Canoeing Union for information about local canoeing clubs and courses in the UK.

Essential gear

Sandals but not trainers, as you may have difficulty getting them into a kayak, particularly if you have large feet.

Neoprene socks, if it is cold.

A swimsuit or trunks or quick-dry shorts and a lightweight thermal top.

Eye protection in the form of shades, a peaked cap or both - with a strap to stop them falling off.

Insect repellent ? water attracts insects.

DIVING

The first preparation is to take the "Experience Scuba" module of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) Ocean Diver course. Cost ?20 and operates in swimming pools all over the country. BSAC also gives away free lessons during National Try Dive Week generally during September. During these sessions, which last for one or two hours, you'll learn the underwater signs, how to share air with your "buddy" and practise swimming in full gear.

It's the lower body ? abdominal and hip muscles, the quads and hamstrings ? you need to work out, and don't forget to keep ankles flexible for more productive fin movements.

Most adventurers are put off diving because they are not strong swimmers. BSAC says; you don't have to be a strong swimmer, it?s all about buoyancy.

Here goes:

1. Use a calendar. Get one that is small enough to carry in your purse. Attach a pen to it, and keep track of everything that's happening. Make sure you guard 2-3 evenings a week for quiet nights at home.

2. Declutter, but don't deep clean. Start in the room you most often visit in, and just declutter the surfaces, putting things away. Then guard those tidy surfaces, and get your family to help keep them tidy.

3. Shop simply and keep to your budget. Here's what we did when budgeting was tight ? I spent $20.00 on everyone's stocking, and did my best to include at least one small gift that they would really appreciate, and then everyone got $20.00 and we visited the sales on Boxing Day. We had so much fun it has become a tradition. Spend an afternoon doing ?Gifts in a Jar? for friends and family.

4. Keep decorating simple. I give you permission to not decorate your house like a magazine. A little greenery, a table centre with a scented candle and a tree are all you need.

5. Cook in batches. Instead of eating out too often because of the stress of preparations, make double batches of your meals in November and freeze them to eat in December. Saves time and money!

6. Save your Christmas letter for Spring. Everyone gets so many letters at Christmas that none are really written, read, or enjoyed properly. Take time at a less stressful time of the year to keep in touch with friends and family.

7. Call instead of sen
ding cards. It's cheaper these days in most cases, and much more personal and appreciated. Try calling one person every day in December and let them know that this is their Christmas card!

8. Listen to stories: Light the fire, get an afghan and hot chocolate, and put on an audio book from the library. Start with classics like ?A Christmas Carol? or ?The Littlest Angel?

9. Get in touch with your spiritual side: visit a local church and sing some carols by candlelight. You don't have to ascribe to their teachings just to visit, and it might well surprise you how much it helps your soul.

10.Go to www.organizedchristmas.com and learn about their Rudolph Club to get a head start on organizing the holidays for next year!

Well, that?s a good number of tips for getting you started on the right foot. Remember, it shouldn?t just be about Christmas Day any more than having a child is all about giving birth. It?s just the beginning of a new journey of family times and adventures.

Darlene Hull is an ordinary, imperfect mom who sees her mission as helping moms look after themselves so that they can better look after their families. Darlene is married to Tom and has two children ? Simon (12) and Christina (11) whom she home- schools. Everything alters and modifies to satisfy an increasing demanding variety of customers. This is the reason why traditionally manufactured clothes and items are now mass produced, suffering transformations from one season to another to become fashionable. Two representative examples are Guayabera shirts and Hawaiian shirts.

Guayabera shirts were worn for the first time in Latin America, being very popular among men from Mexico and Cuba. Hawaiian shirts on the other hand have their origin in the island from where they borrowed their name. Both Guayabera shirts and Hawaiian shirts can be now found worldwide, from United States of America to different regions in Asia and even Africa. But what makes the Guayabera shirts or the Hawaiian shirts so popular? One logical explanation would be their originality and the freshness they bring in our dull lives. The extravagant colors of the Hawaiian shirts and the unique designs of the Guayabera shirts ? this is what attracts an increasing number of persons to buy them.

Originally, the Guayabera shirts had four pockets, two lower pockets and two upper pockets, each with its own button. Some other particular characteristics of the Guayabera shirts are the two rows of alforzas which run on the front of the shirt, over the pockets and on the back of it. The original color of the Guayabera shirts was white, but the customers? desire of new things influenced the style and now there is a multitude of colors that you can choose from. Another modification brought to the Guayabera shirts in time was the number of pockets on them. Nowadays model shirts have two pockets, since the former role of the pockets to carry as many belongings as necessary has been replaced by wallets and bags. The Guayabera shirts have been adapted this way to the present requirements of the customers or transformed by the fashion designers, but the original form with its model and color can still be found in the areas where it was invented. In Latin America, the Guayabera shirts are worn on a daily basis, at the office, while shopping, at a party. However, in the rest of the world, they are still an extravagance proper for special occasions.

It?s the same with the Hawaiian shirts? case. The bright colors, the interesting printings make the Hawaiian shirts something to be proud of, something that differentiates you from the rest of the people, but the initial printings of the Hawaiian shirts have been modified. The truth is you can not find an infinite combination of sunny beaches and palm trees, the tw
o symbolic images of the shirt so, in time, this kind of drawings has had to be replaced with others, not that ?Hawaiian? but still bringing a holiday note - specific birds, faces, sports related with the beach and with the summer time. However, the distinctive element remains the same as it distinguishes the Hawaiian shirts from others: the powerful, exotic colors.

Even the fabrics have changed: initially, the Guayabera shirts, as well as the Hawaiian shirts were 100% cotton. Of course, cotton has its own advantages as it offers coolness, but the shirts? price decreases once the cotton is replaced with polyester, linen, polyester-cotton blends or some other fiber combination. Sometimes these fabrics are preferred to the original cotton specific to the Guayabera shirts and to the Hawaiian shirts, money not being the only reason. The polyester shirts are easily ironed, easily cleaned, sometimes they are even more comfortable.

Celebrities wearing Guayabera shirts made the journey to popularity easier for this sort of clothing because these high profile persons had a major influence on the public manifested not only in opinions, but in style as well. People like President George Bush or the basketball player Shaquille O?Neal wore this kind of shirts showing the entire world their uniqueness. For the Hawaiian shirts, things were smoother. The Hawaiian shirts were specifically designed for the visitors of the island and they became popular because the locals encouraged people to wear them.

No matter your style or your personality, these kinds of shirt shouldn?t miss from your wardrobe. You never know when you may have the opportunity to wear them. There is always a specific time and place where the Hawaiian shirts (for example) can be appropriate. Besides being very comfortable, their easily recognizable style can transform your attitude, influence the persons around you and make you feel better about yourself, prouder to own such an original item. You don?t even have to worry about the shirts becoming obsolete. Old original Hawaiian shirts for example are now sold for hundreds of dollars, so who knows? Maybe these shirts will value a fortune in time. Anyhow, they are just the right investment: you cannot go out of style wearing Hawaiian or Guayabera shirts. These are only two examples of items traditionally worn in specific parts of the globe, but they are not the only ones. You just have to search, explore and invent your own style.

We invite you to visit this site and check out the many offers on Hawaiian shirts and Guayabera shirts . You can now be the proud owner of an exotic, attractive piece of clothing that can always remind you of vacation.

When looking at pirate costumes, you will find pirate hats and pirate swords, pirate mustache, pirate eye patches, but also the right pirate costume just for you. Halloween is not only October 31, where kids go door to door, make Jack-o'-lanterns and pumpkin carvings, but it is also Samhain, a Celtic Holiday, All Hallow's Day, and All Saints Day.

Many may think that they are too old to play dress up or cannot find the right costume in the right size, but that is where the world has not changed, only now you can find the costume you are looking for online. Buying online, you will find the convenience of knowing what costume will fit without ever having to step into a dressing room. Just imagine dressing up as the scandalous Jack Sparrow, or as a female version in a women's pirate captain costume. Halloween Costumes are meant to be fun, so why not a Sexy Pirate Costume.

Piracy has been around since men first sailed the seas, and is still around today. The pirates we think of range from swashbuckling heroes to actual historical ones like Barbarossa, Blackbeard, Redbeard, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, and William Kidd. There were both male and female pirates and they would all pillage and plunder to their hearts desire. The word pirate inspires by its meaning alone, "attempt, experience", basically "to find luck on the sea".

Piracy in the Caribbean was a fact of life in the early days, but it has been a source of inspiration for children and for writers through time; in the form of movies and books. In fact, the Jolly Roger flag and Edward England's flag have also been subjects of history and Hollywood. Piracy was prevalent in the Caribbean from 1560 to the 1760s and continues today. Yet, the early days were when piracy was especially common. It was of interest because England, Spain, the Netherlands and France were all in conflict with each other. Most of those pirates were of English or Dutch descent.

If you're interested in impersonating somebody else for a few hours, Halloween gives you the perfect opportunity to do so. It might surprise you to know that Americans were the first to put on Halloween costumes. Although masquerade balls and mask adorning have been around for eons. Today, Halloween is also celebrated in other countries, including Canada, England, New Zealand, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and Australia.

Some choose to dress up in a sexy Halloween costume and be flirtatious on October 31st. Others enjoy the night pretending to be someone they are not, reenacting pirate scenes they have watches in movies or read about in books. The night doesn't have to be scary; it just has to be fun. Haunted houses, horrifying costumes, and theatrical costumes add to the fun for some. For others a fun party with pirates, clowns, and a super hero or two is more fun. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate, as long as you are having fun.

Fall is a perfect time to dispense with your ordinary clothes for just one night and go to a party in your favorite Halloween costume. And if it just happens to be a pirate, one with some flair to it, then all the better.

Keyword Articles: http://www.keywordarticles.org

When you get to those stores they are jam packed full of people, prices are outrageous and all the shelves have been picked over before you even get there. My suggestion this year is to take some friendly advice and avoid the headache; be smart and shop early. An even better way to save you money on aspirin is to buy your Halloween Costume online this year. In this day and age shopping online is where it's at and Halloween costumes are no exception for those small-towners.

Halloween Costumes are usually hard to find in every size and for all age groups but not at an online store. You can find everything including cultural costumes, historical costumes, French maid costumes, witch costumes, cowboy costumes, and the list goes on and on. What's so amazing about these stores is they never close, are well stocked and you don't just have to use them for Halloween, they ship items for every occasion; graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, school plays or sporting events.

Costume stores strive to provide for those customers who are looking for a costume in all adult men & women sizes, even the hard to find plus size costumes. Among the largely shaped outfits one can find fairies, geisha, goddesses, Red Riding Hoods, gladiators, pirates and werewolves. The younger theatre and Halloween fans are also likely to find interesting outfits here. The online stores offer almost all adult costumes adapted for teens and children with dozens of outfits especially designed for toddlers and babies. See the angel and fairy costumes for the most adorable getups you've ever seen for the little ones. Before buying a costume it is strongly recommended that you look at the sizing chart for the manufacture of the particular item as each of the manufactures make costumes differently. An experienced store staff will be able to give you information and answer questions on costume sizing.

Popular items from the TV, Movies & Comics sections, feature interesting outfits like Batman, Elvis, Harry Potter, characters from Star Wars, Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean, and comic book characters from DC or Marvel Comics such as Superman, Wonder Woman and Spiderman. If you are looking to be a little more risqu this season, have a look at the adult's sexy costume section. There will be the perfect little number for those scandalous playboy bunnies at heart. These also make great Valentine's or anniversary gifts for that special someone in your life. A novelty that is becoming huge for online costume stores is that special item for your pet. Eccentric costumers can now purchase an outfit for their dog or cat, and they get to choose from about a dozen different ones. Imagine trick or treating this year with Rover the super dog or Fluffy the pirate cat. Now there's something you don't see every day.

You can never have enough accessories! Top up your costume with all the fixings complete your Halloween Costume look with a wig, mask, weapon, cape, wings or a set of devil horns. You'll need makeup if you plan to be a Vampire or some other dark supernatural force. Click through hundreds of face colors, fang sets, blood and prosthetics to make your night work remembering.

The larger online costume shops will also have products for magicians and clowns, where they can find dozens of prop articles from lights, smoke machines, puppets, magic hats, swindle card decks and some other stuff to put on a great show for children and adults alike.

Don't' miss out on the show stopping party decorations and supplies before checking out of the store. No party would be complete without a blood feast of holiday napkins, balloons, themed plates, cups and utensils. You will also be able to pick up other fantastic items like glow in the dark skeleton props, bats and spooky spider webs. So what are you waiting for, check out an online store for that perfect Halloween costume this season skipping the lineups and picked over items. Share in the Halloween spirit and type in that eerie URL to buy exactly what you are looking for and in your size!

Keyword Articles: http://www.keywordarticles.org

It was an all day affair kicked off by the parade followed by family picnics all around the city and later in the evening, a fireworks display.

Founder of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Peter McGuire is said to have been the first to propose the idea of a day set aside in celebration of the American worker. Working conditions during that time were poor and many times dangerous. Many factories had no windows for fresh air or venting dangerous fumes, there was no such thing as safety guards on an machine. If someone got hurt on the job, there wasn't any insurance to cover them, in fact they could be fired. Some had poor heating systems or no heat at all, leaving workers to stay warm on their own in winter. But workers were reluctant to take a stand against this abuse, jobs were scarce and they considered themselves lucky to have jobs.

Working long hours in a piano shop during the day and going to meetings in the evenings, Peter learned of the American workers plight. They were tired of these conditions and working long hours for low pay and no job security.

After a march Peter attended in which 100,000 workers marched the streets of New York to protest the appauling working conditions and 10 to 12 hours days, he knew an organized labor movement was needed. He began speaking to groups, both employed and unemployed, about the importance of organizing. He unsuccessfully lobbied the city for jobs and financial relief. This of course did not set well with city government and he gained a reputation as a troublemaker and was once arrested while seeking a permit to parade.

America may have been built on great ideas and money of the wealthy but it was on the backs of the American worker that the dreams of the affluent were realized. Without the sweat and toil of the workforce, those dreams would have remained just that... dreams. The labor of these extraordinary Americans provided the muscle and momentum that literally built this country from the ground up and transformed it into the economic powerhouse it is today.

Not able to find employment in his own trade, Peter began to travel along the eastern seaboard speaking to workers about organizing unions. He moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1881 and soon began talking to the carpenters and organizing conventions there. It was there in St. Louis that a national union of carpenters was founded and where he became the General Secretary of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

Needless to say the idea of organizing the workforce to improve conditions and pay spread across the nation quickly. Once they realized it could be done, workers from around the nation banded together becoming a force to be reckoned with and eventually management was obliged to concede to their demands.

In celebration of the victory, Peter and laborers across America planned a holiday for workers. It was to be on the first Monday in September and on September 5th, 1882 America's first Labor Day parade was held in New York City. Ironically, the event was actually held on a Tuesday. The following year it was also celebrated on September 5th, presumably a Wednesday. It wasn't until 1884 that the holiday was actually celebrated on a Monday.

So during your cookouts and family gatherings this year, remember that the day of celebration was made possible by Peter McGuire's leadership in the fight for us as American workers. We all have certain rituals or customs we do every year to celebrate the season. Did you ever wonder how these customs got their start? Some traditions are well known to all some are celebrated by the few but all are a wonderful way to share the meaning of Christmas with those we love. Read on to learn more about how some traditions came to be.

Advent Calendar
Counting down the days until Christmas with an advent calendar is a popular holiday activity that started in 19th century German homes. The days were counted by making a chalk mark on the floor or hanging a different picture each day. This lead to homemade advent calendars with little doors that were opened each day revealing a Christmas image or bible verse.

Animal Crackers and Christmas?
The National Biscuit Company introduced "Barnum's Animal Crackers" as a holiday seasonal promotion in 1902. The boxes carrying string was designed for hanging on the Christmas tree at a time when candy and treats were typical tree decorations.

Bells
Bells and Christmas are inseparable. A simple silhouette of bells depicts a Christmas meaning. Bells became part of Christian worship around the year 400 and their sound summoning the faithful to worship was their first link to Christmas. This became the notion of "ringing-in" Christmas. In England Christmas is rung in starting December 21st. In Scandinavia, bells ring to announce the end of work and the beginning of the festive season. In some stories, St Nick carries around a hand bell on his visits. The gift-giver in Italy, Befana, rings a bell as she descends the chimney and in Hungary, angel bells are rung to announce that the children's presents have been delivered. Numerous carols use bells as a metaphor for joy and hope as in "Silver Bells," "I heard the Bells on Christmas Day," and "Jingle Bells."

Boxing Day
In Britain and many Commonwealth countries, December 26th is a legal holiday known as Boxing Day. Since the middle ages it was the custom during the Christmas season for English employees to solicit tips from people with whom their employer did business. These tips were collected in earthenware boxes which is where the day got its name.

Candy Canes
The red and white striped stick of hard candy known as the candy cane has its origins around 1670. The candy was invented as a means of quieting children during the Christmas service by a choirmaster of Cologne Cathedral. The candies were made in the shape of a shepherds hook. The shape of the hook soon led to hanging them on the tree as it was the custom to decorate the tree with sweets.

Christmas Carols
Carols were started as songs celebrating events of the Nativity. The word carol is said to be derived from a Greek word for circle dancing. Throughout the years religious organizations have both participated in and prohibited singing carols depending on the religious teachings of the day. During the 17th century carols were sung by carolers on "begging visits" during the Christmas season. After 1878, the Church of England renewed its use of Christmas carols which led to their popularity. The 20th century saw a continued interest in carols and a number of new religious and secular Christmas songs were written and became popular holiday favorites.

Childremas
December 28th is that date of the Feast of the Holy Innocents which commemorates the murder of the male babies of Bethlehem by King Herod. In many countries the day was considered a day of ill omen. In England no business was conducted on that day. In Ireland, no new venture was to begin on that day . Many sailors would not sail on December 28th. On the Aran Islands, no one was to be buried that day. In Cornwall washing that day would bring death to one of your relatives.

Christmas Crackers
A Christmas novelty made popular in Britain. The Christmas cracker is a small cardboard tube covered in decorative wrap. When pulled apart the tube makes a small explosive sound and the inside reveals toys and papers with humorous sayings. It was invented by a London confectioner who wanted a novelty that would sell for the Christmas season. Originally filled with sweet treats it was later filled with humorous or romantic sayings and prizes from inexpensive toys to expensive jewelry. It is now a popular part of Christmas celebrations in homes around the world.

Department Store Santas
The first department store to feature a visit with Santa was the J. W. Parkinson's store in Philadelphia in 1841. Astonishingly, no other department stores copied this event until 1890 when a store in Boston repeated it. Before long lines of children formed at stores across America to sit on Santa's lap and tell him their Christmas wish list. The department store Santa has been immortalized in films such as Miracle on 34th Street and Christmas Story.

Eggnog
This popular holiday drink takes its name from an old term for ale, "nog." It is copied from the French drink lait de poule, made of eggs, milk and spices. Americans added rum to it and topped it with nutmeg.

Elves
Small creatures who are associated with Christmas as Santa's helpers in the North Pole. They were not always so friendly. They originated in Scandinavia as house-elves who could be helpful if bribed but malicious if slighted, especially at Christmas. In Denmark, its customary to leave a bowl of milk out for them. Elves begin to take on a more positive and Christmas oriented persona in the 19th century as part of a drive to make Christmas more child-centered.

Keyword Articles: http://www.keywordarticles.org

Online shopping is gaining popular acceptance among many people as it offers the convenience of shopping comfortably at home, at the office or whatever part of the world you live in as long as you have your reliable computer and an internet connection.

A very useful tip for doing your online Christmas shopping would be to plan early and to make your purchases ahead of time. Just like with the traditional Christmas shopping where you have to do it earlier to avoid the crowds and the rush, purchasing earlier online would enable your gifts to be received by the recipients days before or just in time for Christmas. Online shops charge you a standard shipping rate for their normal deliveries (even offering free shipping during the Christmas season) but additional charges would be incurred should you need to have your gifts delivered rush to arrive on time.

Avoid also having your Christmas presents delivered too early so as to avoid having your presents either opened earlier or being put aside and accidentally forgotten. What gets some people worried though about online shopping for gifts would be not being able to see the actual item and just depending merely on the picture and description. A helpful way would be to try to get the model number and to compare them with similar models or items at your neighborhood shops or department stores.

Or you could look at some items on the mall, take note of their model numbers and brands, and then search for them online. If you have frequently or regularly shopped on a particular online store you are most likely familiar with the type and quality of merchandise they offer.

If the particular merchandise you encountered online is something hard to come across, exercise due caution and take a careful look at the picture, detailed description, the dimensions and measurements to get an understanding of the quality and how the actual product would be.

If you do decide to do your Christmas shopping online, do it only at reliable and reputable online retailers and merchants. We wouldn't want to deal with unreliable sites that can either give us poor quality merchandise but could probably fool us into scams. You can always check the website's forms of authentication, privacy policy, policies on returns and exchanges as well as other certifications to assure you that you are transacting with a reliable company.

Keyword Articles: http://www.keywordarticles.org

Wrap your gifts with another gift. For example, you might wrap a gift with a bright new silk scarf. Wrap a gift for a gourmet with a pretty printed kitchen towel. Wrap a gift for a child in a fun and colorful new T shirt, and a gift for a baby in a receiving blanket. Tie a gift for a man with a new necktie. Finish a gift for a woman with a new necklace.

2. Strive to use wrap that coordinates with the gift. For example, use fun scrapbooking paper for a crafter and copies of old maps for a traveler.

3. Print your favorite family photos of the year onto plain white paper and use for wrapping small treasures.

4. Use fabric scraps and ribbon. Each time you are in a discount store, stop by the fabric clearance section. You can often find elegant and unique supplies at a deep discount.

5. Cut shapes or monograms from cardstock or old holiday greeting cards and hang from ribbon, jute or yarn.

6. Make your own gift wrap with waxed paper and the embellishments of your choice. First, cover your ironing board with a cloth. Take a sheet of waxed paper and lay it flat on the cloth. Adorn the paper with flower petals, confetti, dried leaves, anything you like that is relatively flat. Now put another piece of waxed paper on top. Place another cloth on top of the waxed paper and run a hot iron over the top. The heat from your iron will seal the edges together.

7. Recycle gift wrap from previous years.

8. Sew simple fabric gift bags that can be reused year after year.

9. Adorn the gift with silk flowers or small charms. The scrapbooking industry has made available so many amazing little embellishments that are perfect for adorning gifts.

10. Use rubber stamps to stamp the name or monogram of the recipient (or a special holiday message).

11. Use a particular section of the newspaper as gift wrap. Whether it is the comics or the sports page, this is an easy, inexpensive way to add a personal touch, especially when combined with one of these other techniques.

12. Fold a gift box from holiday cards.

13. Wrap a gift in a drawing or painting that your children have made.

14. Use natural elements from your backyard to adorn gifts. Pine boughs or pine cones, dried grasses, and dried leaves are all charming choices.

15. Purchase plain paper and ask your children to decorate the wrapped item or gift bag with drawings and special messages.

16. Browse flea markets, garage sales, or dollar stores for inexpensive and unique boxes, bags, and bows. You can even decoupage an old cigar box with photos or memorabilia and create a gift box that is a gift in itself.

17. Use stamps, stencils and stickers to dress up plain white or brown paper.

18. If you have young children, ask them to make handprints on plain white or brown gift wrap before wrapping presents for their grandparents.

19. Create a scavenger hunt to lead them on a search for their gift. My kids love to find their presents through a series of clues, and it builds such lively anticipation for the present itself.

20. Find an inexpensive purse or handbag at a discount store and package a range of gifts inside. You might even include a new wallet with a gift card or two.

21. Purchase inexpensive balsa wood boxes at craft or hobby stores. Paint them and adorn with stickers, rhinestones, and beads. The gift box becomes a one of a kind treasure box. This is especially appreciated among young children, who love new keepsake boxes.

22. Tie an old fashioned rattle on a gift for a baby.

23. Use cloth diapers for a baby gift and attach with jumbo diaper pins.

24. Create a gift basket. Fill the basket with colorful crumpled paper, tinsel, raffia or straw. Assemble small gift items inside into an attractive display. Top it all of with colorful, decorative cellophane. The cellophane should be at least twice as wide as the diameter of the basket. Place the basket in the middle of the cellophane and gather the excess at the top, tying it with a shiny ribbon.

With a little extra time and attention, you can make a memorable gift even more so by choosing materials and gift wrap that suits the personality and style of the recipient.

Keyword Articles: http://www.keywordarticles.org

Because your mom is very special, you want to choose just the right gift, and not one that you've given oh so many times before. Flowers, of course, usually seem the obvious choice, especially if you do not live in the same geographical location as your mom, because you can easily purchase them over the phone and have them conveniently delivered right to her door.

This is a great idea, and is definitely a great way to show her how much you care. The key is to send a flower arrangement that will speak directly to her; one that includes the flowers you know she loves best, and that will mean more to her than anything else you should have chosen. Below are several suggestions that will help you get started. You should, however, make your choice based on your mom as an individual, instead of making a general decision.

Since Mothers Day takes place in the spring, flowers that are suitable for this season are often a good idea. Such flowers are often cheerful, and can really help dress up a room. Also, sending an arrangement that contains different types of flowers is a great idea, as it also adds color and variety to the setting. This allows you to choose several different flowers instead of only sticking to one type.

Roses are, perhaps, the obvious choice, since most women really do love them. When choosing roses, try selecting ones of different colors. They will all tell her you love her, so have fun when making your choice. Arrange to have them sent in a basket or ornate vase so she will be able to keep a part of the gift after the flowers have parished.

Violet arrangements also make a great Mothers Day gift. While not particularly common, these flowers lend themselves to the spring time, and help to accent any room in the house.

An arrangement that includes carnations also makes a wonderful gift idea. Carnations, like roses, are among the most popular types of flowers among women, so this is sure to be a hit. Add roses to the arrangement, along with other smaller flowers, and your chosen arrangement will be most fragrant and enjoyable.

If your mom has somewhat of a green thumb, consider sending her a pretty plant. Again, a rose or violet plant will do just fine, as it will allow her to care for beautiful blossoms year-round. She will think of you ever time she tends to them.

Keyword Articles: http://www.keywordarticles.org

This time of year gives special thanks and consideration to those men who went above and beyond to give their children special reflections. The 3rd Sunday in June honors our fathers in their hard work, in the nation's security and assisting our mothers in raising the children in happy and difficult times. It is vital for every individual to give thanks to their fathers that helped in the growing and hard work to keep food on the table and a loving place to grow up as productive adults.

Father's Day was started by Sonora Dodd. When she became an adult she realized how fantastic her father was. Sonora has 5 siblings. Her mother died while giving birth to the last of the children. Sonora's father, William Smart, took control of the situation and struggled immensely to feed, house and clothe 6 children as one was a newborn baby.

Sonora appreciated the sacrifice her father performed while the children began to grow. As she became an adult she saw a Mother's Day Festival and realized there should be a day for the fathers. She started to petition lawmakers in the U.S. to make this a national holiday. In 1924, the lawmakers maintained the ideas of a traditional Father's Day, especially President Coolidge. However, this magnificent day did not become a national holiday until 1972 when President Nixon finally signed the bill.

Between the years of 1924 and 1972 when Father's Day became a national holiday many individual began constructing their own celebrations. There were committees that were designed to begin rallies in honor of fathers everywhere. Before this day became a full holiday, churches and individual heard of Sonora's fight to bring national recognition to her cause.

Certain churches and individual held festivals and parties for fathers everywhere. Even though this day began in the backwoods of Washington State it is now a world-wide tradition. This day honors fathers from all walks of life that has dedicated their time and energy to their children.

Father's Day is a time to reflect on the good with every individual's family. Each person has trials and tribulations with their parents. However, on this fantastic day the fathers of the world deserve respect and recognition for what they have contributed to their families.

Men have taken on many burdens in life, they have fought in wars, they have worked their fingers to the bones in order to feed and clothe their families. Fathers have come home in the evening and played ball with their kids, eating dinner together as a family, assisting in homework and reading bedtime stories. They have played Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy.

These men have sacrificed their sport cars and seasonal ball game tickets for their children's college education and medical bills. Father's Day is the time to say thanks and show how much you appreciate how a true dad spends their time.

Keyword Articles: http://www.keywordarticles.org

The possibilities are virtually endless but there are some themes that come to the forefront for the age groups. In this article, we will look at cakes for preschool age children, elementary school age children, middle school or junior high age kids, teenagers and adults.

Clown themes are always popular with preschool children, whether they are boys or girls. It is a can't miss theme because of the cheerful, bright colors and happy smile of a circus clown. A clown's head cake can be tailored to a girl or a boy very easily by either the choice of bold primary colors for boys or softer, pastel colors for girls. For girls, the clown can even be a girl clown. Either way, this is a very pleasing Birthday cake design for very young children.

As children get into elementary school, the preferences of boy and girls diverge more distinctly. So this means that there are likely to be very different birthday themes for boys and girls. Girls love Barbie, so a Barbie themed cake is ideal. With the many 'faces' of Barbie, this cake can easily reflect your child's particular favorite Barbie. Boys love superheroes and one of the most popular these days is Spiderman. Boys would love a Spiderman themed party and birthday cake.

In middle school or junior high, kids tastes start to change. They are no longer as enthused about Barbies and superheroes as they were just a short time ago. At this age, a fun theme for a birthday cake is based on their favorite food. And what could that possibly be? Well, pizza, of course. This makes a very colorful, fun cake that all will enjoy immensely. It works just as well for the girls as it does for the boys.

For teenagers in high school, tastes become even more sophisticated. A can't miss theme for a birthday for young men and women in this age group is music. So a perfectly themed cake would be that thing that is perpetually attached at nearly all times - an iPod. With the choice of colors available in real iPods, it is easy to have the cake done in the celebrant's favorite color iPod.

Adults are both the easiest and hardest to think of good theme birthday cakes for but there are a few that are wonderful for nearly everyone. Women love flowers, so a flower garden themed birthday cake is a sure to please option. The flowers on the cake can be the favorite of the celebrant and in her favorite color. For a little humor, a man's cake can emulate his most prized possession - the TV remote, of course. This cake can be either a generic remote or a replica of the celebrant's actual remote.

These are all birthday cakes that can be ordered from nearly any bakery that does decorated birthday cakes or, if you are so inclined, you can do them yourself with a little practice. Which ever you choose, they are fun birthday cake designs.

Keyword Articles: www.keywordarticles.org

During a festival, like Christmas, everyone is in the gift giving spirit and each one wants the gift to be cherished by its recipient. Children especially go crazy, demanding the latest gadgets or the newest toys on the shelf. Advertisements on TV too encourage you to buy the latest in the market, irrespective of the cost. After all we are living in a material world.

However if you look back or ask a few friends you will find that the most cherished gifts are not any of these fancy gadgets. What you remember after a decade or so is not the superman suit or the Barbie set; it is not at all proportional to the cost or the demand of the item.

What counts are the memories associated with the gifts. Children remember their parents taking time out to watch a play together or go for an outdoor activity. They cherish the smiles, joys, jokes associated with these gifts more than the gifts themselves.

A little study ad you will realize that children long for your time. They cannot demand so and hence indirectly demand the rarest or a difficult to attain gift. In order to please our children we are able to spare time and scour for the gift in different supermarkets, but why do we not just spend that time more valuably with the children themselves.

Certain pointers to consider before you go about purchasing a gift are:

Think about the time you spend together with your children. Have you gone recently for a trek or a picnic? Does your child have a favorite outing he recollects?

You can build upon this by doing things together. This can be a perfect gift. Try to get reservations for a family vacation, even if it is only for the weekend. Or you could book tickets for a play or a circus show. Attend a game of his favorite team and cheer together. You could even indulge in some activity together as in clay molding or some crafts.

Do not spend your time in getting the so called fancy gift for your child, again this year. In stead put in the time, effort and interest in being together and making it a memorable experience. Something you both will cherish forever. This will show your children you are interested in them and really love them. They will indeed cherish this as the best gift ever.

Keyword Articles: www.keywordarticles.org

Here are 25 meaningful ways to celebrate your togetherness this season.

1. Go for a family nature walk near your home to collect seasonal items that you can use in your holiday decor. If you live near a forest, the obvious choices are pine boughs and pinecones, but long dried grasses can look just as festive tied with a holiday bow.

2. Make a few handmade holiday cards this year as a family.

3. Make appreciation cards. Replace the annual Christmas letter in your holiday cards with a brief letter of appreciation for the recipient.

4. Create or purchase new ornaments each year for the tree. Create or shop for an ornament that reflects a defining event or sentiment for the year.

5. Enjoy a Family Night with special holiday crafts or games.

6. Start a Christmas themed puzzle somewhere in your home. A puzzle table, placed in a quiet room is great for holiday visitors. Whenever your guests want to get away from the action, they can retreat to work on the puzzle. This can be a great stress reliever, and it is wonderful for those guests who always have to be busy doing something.

7. Play special music. Ask everyone for their favorite holiday CD. Allow each family member to choose and keep them in the CD changer.

8. Take a photo of your children standing in a particular spot each year (in front of the tree, by the front door) anyplace that will be consistent from year to year. Make a special holiday ornament or scrapbook album that depicts the growth and change of your family each year.

9. Research the holiday traditions of your nationality. Adopt a few of these traditions into your annual celebration each year to celebrate your heritage.

10. Ask each child to write a Dear Santa letter. (Small children can draw pictures). Keep a special record of these letters in an album or treasure box.

11. Create an evening tradition of taking a family walk or drive in your neighborhood to view the holiday lights.

12. Cut snowflakes from wrapping paper, festive holiday advertisements, or holiday cards, and string them together into a festive garland.

13. Adopt a special cause each year and spend some time as a family helping those in need, or raising or donating money for a charity of your choice.

14. What are your favorite holiday memories? Pose the question tonight at the dinner table. Use the answers to plan the celebration. You may be surprised at the special memories that have nothing to do with gifts or elaborate events.

15. For fifteen minutes, write down things in your life that you are grateful for. Ask each of your family members to join you in creating their own lists.

16. Bundle up and head outside. Make snow angels or build a snow fort with your kids. When it is time to warm up, build a cozy fire and roast marshmallows in your living room.

17. What is your favorite homemade holiday treat? Write down the recipe, and share it with your friends. Encourage them to do the same.

18. Challenge each member of your family to fill a box or bag full of items to give away. Decide as a family where to make a donation.

19. What was the best book you read this year? With whom would you most like to share its message? Purchase a copy for them and drop it off, anonymously.

20. Take your family to a performance of The Nutcracker. Purchase a CD or DVD of the Nutcracker to bring the memories home.

21. The holidays can take their toll. Make a holiday tradition of recharging your own batteries. Gather your daughter and your best friend and head to the day spa for a much deserved pedicure or massage.

22. Reach out to those whom you have not seen all year. It takes a little extra effort this busy time of year, but make a goal to send a card or note to someone you think about but do not see much anymore.

23. Keep a "Joy Journal" this holiday season, in which you record the funny things your kids say, joyful times you share, your favorite things to do with your family (and by yourself), and all the things for which you are grateful. Use your Joy Journal as a reminder of the facets of your life (and this holiday season) that are really important.

24. Give small and simple gifts (homemade cookies or a small book) to a few of the people who make your everyday life easier, such as the trash collector and postal carrier.

25. With Halloween around the corner and Thanksgiving and Christmas not far off, most of us think say the same thing to ourselves: This is the year I will shop early so I can avoid last minute shopping. I will begin the holiday season fully relaxed and enjoy it!

Yet every year time seems to slip away and suddenly the holidays arrive. You end up racing to the stores, panic-stricken, trying to find candy in the empty racks or a beautiful turkey for the dinner table that is now triple the price because the only store that has any left is the high-end market down the street.

Even worse, when you need to find that ideal last-minute gift for your loved ones, it is no longer available in the color or size needed and all the toys requested from Santa are sold out with no re-stocks in the near future. You end up paying far too much money for something that will most likely be returned or never used.

How can you beat pre-holiday stress and save big bucks at the same time? Start today. The time to put a plan into action is now. Halloween is nearly here and there are big savings in the candy isle already featuring Halloween candy. Buy the candy now, wrap it in a brown paper bag and hide it in your freezer so no one knows it's there but you. If you are a candy nut like me, buy a bit for yourself so you won't be tempted to snarf it.

Now is also the time to plan for Thanksgiving and Christmas. While the meat is not on sale yet, you can call your local market and ask the store manager when their holiday meats will go on sale. Most store managers will give you an approximate date for when the meat you desire will go on sale at their store. Mark that date on your calendar.

How many times have you said to yourself: This year I will get Christmas cards out. Before you know it December is nearly over and Christmas is days away. You haven't purchased the Christmas cards let alone put a stamp on one and you are too busy with everything else to do it. You beat yourself up, frustrated that yet again, you are too late and time has run out. To avoid this frustrating cycle, start now when you aren't as busy as you will be later on in the season.

Do one envelope a day or two or three a week and by Christmas, you will have reached your goal. If you don't have Christmas cards left over from last year, do a Christmas letter instead to save time and money. Then after Christmas buy the cards for next year at 75% off so you'll have the cards ready to go for next year.

Now is also the time to shop for Christmas gifts. Many huge sales take place during Back to School Days and the day after Thanksgiving. Most stores have huge discounts on name brand clothing, toys and jewelry to name just a few categories.

Example: Last year a diamond bracelet valued at $5,000 was on sale for $199.00 but only the day after Thanksgiving and only during the early bird special. That's typical of the type of sales you can expect if you do your research.

Check out the stock in the store now if you're already there and make a list of what you would like to buy on sale the day after Thanksgiving so you are prepared to head straight to the departments needed. Making a road map of what department you want to hit first, will help you avoid wandering aimlessly and missing the items you've placed on your list. If you think of it as a game show or competition, you'll be more inspired.

There are many more stress busting ideas and ways to save money that you can come up with on your own. These are just a few to get you started. The main goal is to start now and be ready when the time comes so you won't be shopping when you're stressed out and frustrated. Make the time now and you'll be enjoying the holidays as you did when you were a kid.

Keyword Articles: www.keywordarticles.org
