What keeps kids fixated for hours in one spot (within a 10 ft radius) at outdoor parties and picnics? What keeps them from running off into the distant horizon never to be seen again. Bubbles. Kids are fascinated by them and the adults love the festive atmosphere it creates. There is an art to bubble blowing and festive, decorative bubble arrangement. The-art-of-blowing-bubbles And what's better then blowing bubbles by hand? Bubble blowers. Yep. The kind you see used at weddings. I own several bubble blowing machines I plan to put on display at the next picnic. Each bubble blower is powered by a small battery compartment held in place by a removable lid secured by one or two very small screws.

Depending on the duration of the event I might find myself changing the batteries periodically as needed. I remember once getting quite frustrated with myself over forgetting to bring my set of screwdrivers and almost gave up on setting up the display when suddenly I remembered that I always carry my trusty pocket tool complete with phillips and flat head mini screwdrivers. But would it do the job?

I Popped the battery compartments open, changed the batteries and the bubble blowers were up and running in no time. Back in business. The laughter and excitement from every kids voice was worth the effort. Now we're cooking with oil! When it comes to event planning there's nothing like having just the right tools at hand. Having Fun with Family History

Life is full of surprises. One sunny day you're enjoying the golden daffodils and the brilliant display of colorful tulips while listening to the breeze ruffle the leaves of swaying trees. As chirping birds dash and swoop from limb to limb suddenly the clouds roll in and rain begins to fall.

First a sprinkle and a shower, then it pours. A nice surprise for the trees and grass but the rest of us gather our things together and head for shelter. Why do we run from the very thing necessary to keep us alive?

Whenever there is a severe drought nobody runs from the rain. On the contrary, they call everyone they know, they stand looking up at the sky as the rain falls on their relieved and happy faces. they soak it all up, wading in it, walking in it and laughing in it. Today? Today we run from it!

While watching it rain from the inside looking out I often think of how lush and brilliant the foliage will grow thanks to this good watering and then I think about the personal growth I strive for, a goal that has shaped my families life for three generations now.

Personal and Family Growth

When I think of the growth made it can only be defined by the results. I'm proud of my hard working wife Brenda who woke up today singing a song as she scurried out the door on her way to serve a community of college bound youth. I'm proud of my mother and father who also have devoted themselves to providing wisdom, hope and practical assistance to the residents of our city.

I am equally proud of my son Jonathan and his wife who both do volunteer work at a local congregation helping the younger generation manage a life of turbulence. These are some of the notable things I put down in our family history logs preserved for the next generation to come. But that's not all that made the history books. There were sunny days and cloudy days, droughts and surprise showers, stooping lower to dig deeper and reach higher with many lessons learned along the way. Best of all a lot of laughter and spontaneous fun. These times deserve to be recorded as well.

Having Fun With Family History

And speaking of family history logs It's always best to keep a log, journal or blog of your family life including genealogy, community contributions, life growing up. But family history does not always have to be cut-and-dry.

Add some life to it by including some funny photos of baby in a bath full of soap suds or the toddler frantically chasing bubbles in the park. Include silly pranks like dumping water on dads head while sleeping on the porch or baby's first attempt to feed himself while making a complete mess of what was a perfectly prepared spaghetti dinner.

Add some light anecdotal stories from family interviews and include some excerpts from humorous text messages to and from family members. Step back in time to yesteryear and take a stroll on the funny side of life. Collect bridesmaids dresses and tux worn over the years. Remember the dances or the days the kids decided to take over the kitchen and make dinner? Record the secret shower serenades. There's nothing like viewing photo stories and video of failed attempts at inventions, recipes and art compared to the look of glee when after many attempts they finally succeed.

Making Your Family Reunion Keepsake Booklet

In our last newsletter under Reunion Preparation Reminders we discussed where you want to be on the "Family Reunion Timeline Checklist". You should have collected photos, stories, genealogy research and have started on your photo and genealogy presentations. These will go in your family reunion keepsake booklet.

Photos

You will want to do one of two things with your photos.
1. Scan them into your computer
2. Take a picture of the photo using your digital camera, camera phone or cell phone and transfer them to your computer.

Now that your photos are on your computer use your photo editing tools to crop (cut-around) the images into a perfect square.

Family History

Next, from your family history files put together two paragraphs of information about your ancestors from the earliest records available. Include full first names, middle and surnames of both father and mother, marriage dates, education, trades and employment, residents, migration and births leading up to the eldest living family member. http://family-reunion-planner.fimark.net/family_reunion_booklet.html

Attendee Registration Roster/Database

How to Design Family Reunion T-shirts

It's family reunion t-shirt designing time! This month you want to wrap up your family reunion planning tasks and jump to the task of designing your family reunion t-shirts. That means getting the committee to adopt their mission and vote on the family reunion theme, slogan, logo and color.

Before you take a vote there are a few important event defining items to put on the table, five to be exact.

1. Event Title 2. Theme 3. Mission 4. Slogan 5. Logo

Event Title: It's important that the committee making the final decision on the t-shirt design are familiar with the meaning behind the event title and how it relates to the mission. The title can be printed on the t-shirt, banner and any event keepsakes and party favors.

Theme: The theme may address the direction you will take to accomplish your mission. It may focus on the activities involved providing a central definition of purpose in just a few words.

Example: "2020 Cousins United."
In this example the theme focuses on reuniting the cousins of the family and all that this may imply including meeting and greeting, exchanging contact information, sharing photos or slideshow presentations of days gone by. Enjoying entertainment characteristic of the cousins generation. Visiting the homestead and enjoying festivities as a group.

Mission: The mission is the vision of purpose. It defines the ultimate purpose and objective for having the event and therefore sets the bar or standard for each participant to fulfill as well as the elements needed to realize that purpose.

Example: "Our mission is to discover, promote and manage family interests while introducing a community built by the hard work of a strong house. It is our objective to give our children a sense of purpose and place and pass the torch of family responsibility and reward onto them."

Slogan: The slogan is the motivating catchy phrase that encapsulates both the mission and theme.

Example: "Knowing Our Purpose, Discovering Our Place, Enjoying the Rewards."

Once these elements have been defined it's time to design the shirt.

It came out of no where. Only a few days advance notice. Brenda and I watched the news as half the east coast was pummeled by several inches of snow. In some areas snow drifts were several feet high. We were grateful we did not get a single snow flake here in Maryland but we drew up a list of things we intend to do when the big one hits.

Black History Month is a remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African Diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States and Canada in the month of February, while in the UK it is held in the month of October.

Black History Month was established in 1976 by African-Americans for the Study of African-American Life and History. The month-long celebration was an expansion of Negro History Week, which was established in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, director of what was then known as the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History.

At first it was celebrated almost exclusively by African Americans, taking place outside of the view of the wider society. Increasingly, however, mayors and governors, especially in the North, began endorsing Negro History Week and promoting interracial harmony. Now Black History Month is a national observance. Families are encouraged to take advantage of the effort to promote recognition of a rich heritage, culture and resilient people of African decent including African Americans, European Africans, Brazil, the Caribbean Islands and Jamaica to name a few.

INCOMING 2013
The Fall has passed and winter is upon us. Before you know it, it will be spring again. Can you believe that 2012 has come and gone? It was back in 2008 that we wrote... "Before you know it we'll be sipping a frosty glass of lemonade to the beat of "Family Reunion" on a warm Sunny day while the youngn's laugh and play." Well 2008 thru 2012 has passed but we do have our memories don't we? And that's what it's all about. Even now we are halfway thru the month of January and the rest is about to be gulped down.

NO REGRETS
Don't drink your refreshing cup of life to quickly. Learn how to truly savor the moment. Enjoying the moment is not as easy as it sounds. But when you consider the fact that all we really have are our memories, the present time, and the happiness we hope to enjoy in the near future making memories free of needless regrets has much to do with knowing how to enjoy the moment.

1. Don't drown out past regrets in bottles of brew and addicting substances. This will only conjure up foolish talk and actions we end up regretting later.

2. Don't attempt to mimic a pretense of happiness. Why pretend when you can experience the real thing? Give yourself permission to be truly happy. Love, loyalty and commitment make it happen.

3. Don't try to live someone-else's life. Help them live their own life and always live your own.
Learn from mentors example and be an example yourself.

4. Trying to relive the good old days in our present time won't work. Focus on living in the here and now. Only then can you look back fondly and enjoy a memory with substance, meaning and purpose.

5. Much of your success in creating a memory has to do with good planning and keeping things simple enough to enjoy the present. Give yourself permission to enter the moment, the present day and hour and make the most of it with the ones you love rather than fussing over endless details.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS
What are your New Years resolutions? How close are you to meeting your goal? Here's are some tips that help make your resolutions a reality.

1. Spend more time with family even if it means writing letters, making phone calls or video conferencing. Not a phone person? Don't worry about it. Set a date to get together and pass it on.

2. Don't just talk about what you want to do. Make it happen with good planning.

3. Planning an event? Begin by considering the purpose of the event and what you want to accomplish and express. Create a theme.

4. Put an event planning date on your calendar and think about the features of the event until the planning date arrives.

2ND ANNUAL FAMILY NIGHT

Brenda and I put on a successful 2nd Annual Family Night last month for family and friends. We enjoyed professionally composed music by close friends of the family. We enjoyed slideshows of our young from birth to present. We even composed our own background music for a family musical movie. Our purpose in doing this was six-fold.

1. Bring our family back together purely to celebrate family values and take pride in our roles as parents and siblings.

2. Teach the importance of putting family first over and above secular interests.

3. Teach our youth solid relationship skills while building character and unbreakable bonds.

4. Provide a positive pro-active outlet to direct all of our creative energy and inspire our youth to think about what they want to do with their life.

5. Fill the need for paternal affection

6. Heal aching hearts needing to confront family loss and provide closure.

7. Learn how to celebrate new life.

This time around their were fewer delays and disappointments. More time for hugs, taking photos and shaking hands. Our 2nd Annual Family Night event was the most wonderful and beautiful moment that I and most of the attendees had ever experienced.

My most gratifying memory is that 2 years ago the whole thing was conceived by Brenda and I on our family summer vacation.

WATCH THEM GROW

Planning a family reunion is a great reason to come together. Be it to quilt, knit, exchange ideas, photos and recipes or just reminisce. When you think about it the time spent in preparation for a family reunion is as meaningful as the event itself. It's a time to enjoy the moment.

A proverb ways, "Wisdom is the prime thing. Highly esteem it, and it will exalt you. It will glorify you because you embrace it. To your head it will give a wreath of charm a crown of beauty it will bestow upon you. Another says,
even the ant is “instinctively wise.” — Proverbs 4:7-9, 30:24, 25.

We are all growing and entering new stages of life we once only hoped to enter. Graduation, marriage, business, parenting, grand parenting and great grand parenting. It's a time to take on a new identity and carry the torch. To sit among comrades who share your joy and experience. To learn how to make the most of it. To gather wisdom, give wisdom and appreciate the good results of applied wisdom.

Events and ceremonies help us put it all into perspective. When planning any event including weddings, graduation and reunions take the time to use that time to contemplate and plan the future and appreciate the accomplishments leading to entering the next stages of life and most of all to gather the wisdom needed to carry on. When the events have passed you realize just how much it was needed for all involved.

Family Night - A Big Hit
This is an exciting time of year for me and Brenda. We are planning our annual Family Night with family and friends of the family. We started this traditional gathering in order to celebrate family values, present good parenting ideas and connect closer with our youth while giving them an opportunity to reveal their hidden talents, interests and their more mature side.

Since the very first annual Family Night it's been anxiously anticipated among families in several groups in our community.

It's amazing what gathering purely for the sake of connecting can do to the spirit of a child. Often teens distance themselves due to misunderstanding what a busy schedule of hard-working parents can do to them. This often leads to unspoken heartache and disappointment, making the parents job even more difficult. But when family members come together to prepare for Family Night doing what they all love doing most wounds quickly heal.

Making It All Work
Four key factors to making this work for each family member are:

Get the youth involved in the planning, writing and organizing process.
Make sure there are plenty of eats the young folk and parents like and allowing them to clown around while taking snack breaks each hour or so.
Set up the show in dinner theater fashion.
Have the participants serve meals and soft-drinks to the older ones so they can connect with them in a special way.

One of the biggest hits of a our semi-formal family night affair is the Talent Show. Every second is savored and parents are proud of whatever their children do. Another hit is a well prepared drama complete with dignified comedy, cuteness and bitter-sweet situations.

Surprise Surprise

This years event will feature a movie taken of lasts years Family Night drama with added footage and a slideshow segment of all our kids growing up from infancy.
To add some snap and surprise there's sneak peak "guess who" footage of the parents when they were the same age as their children.

The folks were thinking about getting warm and staying warm throughout the coming winter months. Coats, jackets hat's, caps, scarves and gloves are on the top of the list. Brenda's even started knitting again.

I decided to feature an adventurous knitting class scene in the drama. How could I knitting class scene possibly be exciting and adventurous.? We pulled it off.

What inspires good spirited merriment better than a good hot meal. Depending on the season and economy we either have a potluck meal presentation where all the invited guests bring a dish or we will have it catered. Frankly they seem to prefer the variety in potluck banquet style dinners.

Low swirling winds sweeping up golden leaves and the scent of logs burning can quickly stir the heart. Warm woolen sweaters, pumpkins and multi-colored corn cobs seem to make each porch front more cozy and inviting. Autumn at its best.

But what's even better are the feasts. Sweet potato and pumpkin pie. Warm apple cider, corn wine, maple syrup on pancakes, turkey or chicken smothered in gravy with hot buttered veggies on the side. If you're the kind of person who likes an autumn cookout or a big spread in the dining room it's Family Fest Time!

At this time of the year families comes together to render much needed support, encouragement and inspiration. This led to a relatively new and exciting concept in family reunion planning. An annual observance established in 2005.

Family Reunion Planning Month
An observance centering around family reunion planning. The observance began when a family reunion planning group of 400 members agreed to make November the month to commence family reunion event planning. Mark Askew, founder of the groups official monthly newsletter, published and promoted the observance in his book Fimark's Family Reunion Planner. Why November? 10 good reasons.

1. November is the time of year extended families come together making this an ideal time to discuss and establish suggested dates and activities for the next family reunion.

2. November - January are periods of time where families swap photos and videos. It's an ideal time to start putting together materials for family scrapbooks, family history books, memory books and family reunion keepsake booklets.

3. During this time elder family members like to keep family traditions alive and may make their own proclamations, education and financial planning and seek to empower the family union in some other way. Family reunion planning helps to serve that purpose as well.

4. November thru December is one of the more intimate times of the year. Indoor activities are the norm. This includes story telling. An ideal season to do family history information gathering including interviewing the elders of the family.

5. November starts nine weeks before the close of year. A good time to note the family's contributions toward bettering the community and set goals to complete important tasks before years end. One such task could be to establish a date, time and place to hold the next family reunion.

6. Many November observances are family oriented. Aside from the obvious, others including:

National Family Caregiver Month
National Family Literacy Month
International Creative Child and Adult Month

That said, the fact that spending time with family is already being given serious consideration during this season makes it ideal for family reunion planning.

7. It a great time of year for family outings including nature walks, visiting museums and relatives near and far.

8. A season families plan short modest vacations and enjoy indoor recreational activities.

9. It's a traditional time of year to express thanks, gratitude and appreciation.

10. This is also a good time to get all family members involved in the family reunion planning process and appoint each and every family member over some aspect of the event.

Brenda and I still enjoy going to the movies together and enjoying a well written and directed theatrical presentation by individuals with high standards for life and filial love. And if you're like us you always get excited when a new family movie trailer is released. Nothing like having something to look forward to.

Coming Soon This Fall

Speaking of movie trailers... Have you noticed how specific dates are never given, just something like "Coming soon... Fall 2012" or "Summer 2013?" While anxious anticipation of something - anything stirs the emotions and charges the senses there is nothing that even comes close to the warm, sweet anticipation of something truly good that's soon to come. That's the way Brenda and I feel about the changing of the seasons. Can you feel that deep inner anticipation of summer changing into fall and all the activities of the harvest season soon to come? We do sure do.

What do you call that? We call it hope. While hope is like a small warm ember burning at your core, it can be like a rising flame becoming strikingly powerful and all consuming. But hope is not to be confused with a wish. A wish can be momentary and fleeting due to the fact that it is based on something not so easily obtained.

Hope is much more. It is the knowledge that what is desired can be obtained or that certain key events will unfold for the best. A wise man once pointed out how hope has as it's basis well-grounded "evident realities".

Do You Remember

Do you remember when you first heard the artfully contrived words: "Hope springs" and "hope floats" in fictional books and movies? Still they do not come close to the realities of hope we see everyday of our lives. The clearing of grounds surrounded by a gate and a prominent sign indicating the building of a community college strategically placed next to a 50 year old high school. A small town turning into a bustling community. A congregation of 8 or more soon becoming a community order assisting thousands in raising the quality life. Hope is all around us. Helping us become our best selves.

Hope Builds

The fact is hope envisions. Hope plans. Hope organizes. Hope builds and hope manages. One day Brenda and her cousins embraced a spark of hope. They envisioned a family reunion that would honor and award their elders with a token of love and appreciation unlike anything they had expressed before. And over time with good planning and organizing it became a reality. I remember being so impressed that I asked her to consider serving as a reunion planning consultant. Smart Phone Apps
Using your smartphone list every product you purchase and store it in an inventory application. Keep an inventory of all the products and accessories you've purchased in alpha order. If the item requires replacement indicate this with an alphabetic marker (r). Also add the item barcode number so you can find out if it's compatible with another product you wish to purchase.

Bar Code Scanning
It's time to start using these smartphone apps for more than just lists. Download a bar code scanner along with compatible apps that allow you to do price comparisons, calculate the cost of budget supplies and maintain an inventory complete with warranty info and product manual instructions. It's the smarter way to enter data. Now you're armed and ready to shop smart and save.

Making good use of what you already have requires knowing all there is to know about the products and applications you've purchased. Hot Fun In The Summertime

The weather was the hottest in 30 years. Real feel 100 degrees! A real scorcher if I should say so myself and for a time we wondered if anyone would show up.

A no-show would be no surprise considering that the night before a brutal thunder storm moved with winds as high as 80 miles per hour. The severe storm knocked out power lines over a wide 30 mile radius and downed large 20 year old trees.

Many of the invitees were without power in their homes while others had to contend with structural damage. When we arrived at the park we were glad to see that no trees were down and the pavilions were in good condition. Still we noticed that the power outlets were dead. That meant our well planned surprise mini concert would have to be postponed. Not a disappointment. We would have more time to rehearse and present it during our September event. Just one more thing to look forward to.

Still we fired up the grill, blew up and hung decorative balloons and streamers, started up the bubble blowers and made sure we had plenty of iced water and cool water games. Then we waited, and waited and waited.

A few hours later a few showed up. An hour later more arrived. In time over 60 filled the two pavilions. The congregation annual Family BBQ had begun. This summer the event would be held at MeadowWood Park in Huntvalley MD.

The small park with lots of grassland was a first for us. It had a large playing field, cool shady pavilions and a small stream and cross bridge that local kids used to catch crayfish.

Family, friends and friends of friends attended. Everyone from little ones to our eldest were fully involved in the activities of the day.

As usual Brenda and I did much of the planning organizing and directing. We like to do something different each year and build anticipation weeks in advance. Wonderful memories were made, old friendships rekindled and new ones made.

Our activity list was as follows:
1, Face Painting
2. Bubble Games
3. Water Balloon Toss
4. Card Games
5. Prizes and Rewards

1. Face Painting - Face painting is indeed a craft requiring some practice. What you need is soft oil based face paint found at any party planning store or craft store. Small soft sponges. Soft bristle paint brushes work well. Stencils for making starts and heart shapes. Paper towels and soapy water for clean up.

2. Bubble Games - Kids will play with this for hours. What you need are various bubble wands in all shapes and sizes. A large flat tub full of bubble solution. Water and towels to wash soapy hands and faces.

3. Water Balloon Toss - Water balloons are a wonderful way to cool off in the hot sun. You'll need at least one hundred balloons for 10 minutes of fun. Small balloons are preferred as they are easy to handle and throw. Multiple colors make for a more attractive display that kids can't resist. Avoid over filling the balloon as they will burst as soon as they are handled. Fill the balloons with cool water only and place in a cool shady place until the games begin.

The most exciting activity of the day was throwing water balloons at each other mainly to cool off. The kids and kids at heart loved it.

After the games were over we offered stuffed bears, flamingos and monkeys to all the kids who helped clean up the water balloon fallout. They quickly cleaned up and excitedly claimed their prized rewards with great glee. The kids seemed to like the long armed stuffed monkeys best of all.

Event planners the family reunion season is upon us. In one week many of you
will be enjoying your family reunion event and many will be going back home with
lasting memories, more support and assurance thanks to your efforts. We commend
you for your hard work.

We would like to remind you of a few follow up tasks necessary to making your
event flow smoothly:

1. Make certain all members have their t-shirt orders. (See the timeline

Your family reunion is just around the corner and you need to increase event funds fast? Fund raisers can be costly. Who wants to end up investing more than what was made.

To make your fun raiser a festive, colorful and interest event for all get as many involved in donating used items and craft items. The more creative the better. Keep in mind that having a fund drive is a craft in and of itself. Setting up attractive displays takes some forethought.

Make items eye catching, inviting and laughable with punchy, witty price tags and colorful persuasive labels.
