A lot of people think that horseback riding isn’t an option if they don’t have a farm, or at least a lot of land. Fortunately, there are a lot of places all around the country that allow people to hire horses for an hour, or even an afternoon. These are great for families that want to get together and enjoy an afternoon of horseback riding, but don’t actually have horses themselves.

Almost all children are fascinated by horses. They represent strength, beauty, nobility, and a host of other traits that both boys and girls are drawn to. As a result, just about every little kid goes through a stage of wanting a pony. While most parents aren’t able to offer their children their very own pony, just about every parent can take their child on a horseback riding outing.

A lot of stables have horses for hire for trail riding, or “hacking.” Here, people hire horses, and go out as a group to ride along trails. Some people without prior horseback riding experience might be a little intimidated by the idea of riding a horse along a trail, but the truth is that it’s very easy. All of the horses hired out by these places are very well-trained, and have all of the trails around their barns memorized. Even someone who hasn’t ever ridden a horse before will find these animals pleasant and tractable. All most of them require is that their rider sit still.

Horseback riding outings are a great idea for families for a variety of reasons. As was mentioned before, children are fascinated by horses, and will love the chance to go for a ride. Parents who enjoy things like hiking or bird watching will enjoy the chance to do it from horseback, and even people who aren’t very outdoorsy will like the opportunity to relax and go for a calm, pleasant ride on a well-trained horse. More experienced riders can ride their mounts English style, which allows the rider closer contact with their mount, and a finer sense of control over the horse’s gait and direction. Inexperienced riders will enjoy Western style riding, which uses a bulkier saddle and a different method of controlling the horse that is less direct than the English style. Neither way is better than the other, but people should consider the differences between the two and their own skill level when they are choosing a riding style. Because Western riding tends to be easier and more comfortable for people who aren’t experienced riders, many stables saddle their trail riding mounts with Western saddles by default.

If you’re looking for an activity that’s a little different than other family outings, horseback riding might be perfect for you. It allows children to experience what it’s like to be on their own horse, while giving parents a nice, relaxing outing for the afternoon. Even if you live in the city, chances are there’s a stable that offers afternoon trail rides just outside your city limits.

As kids get older, some of them seem to lose interest in the things they used to love. Kids that formerly adored going to the park or the beach might prefer to stay inside playing video games or listening to music instead. The need to get outside and be active doesn’t decrease with age, however, so parents still need to find a way to get their kids up and out of the house.

One great activity to do with teenagers is geocaching. In geocaching, people use portable GPS units to find small cache sites, where people have hidden tiny troves of treasures, or simple log books. Though geocaching is a fun family activity that’s appropriate for all ages, few teens are likely to get tired of the appeal of treasure hunting with time. Sites like geocaching.com have more information on the hobby, as well as lists of cache sites near your hometown.

Parents who are avid fishermen or hunters might want to get their teenagers involved in their hobbies once they’re old enough to do so responsibly. However, not everyone agrees with hunting and fishing, and it should be noted that some teens may object to these practices for their own, deeply personal ethical or moral reasons. These reasons should be respected. Therefore, parents who enjoy these hobbies should suggest them to their children, but not take it too badly if their suggestions are turned down. If that’s the case, parents can try suggesting catch and release fishing, or photo hunting instead. Both activities require skill, just like fishing and hunting, without many of the ethical complications that come with actual fishing or hunting.

Teenagers are better candidates for camping or backpacking trips. While younger kids tire easily, and require a lot of supervision, teenagers can be trusted more. This makes the teenage years the ideal time to show kids the real outdoors, by taking them camping in the wilderness, and other areas where younger children can’t go. It makes for far more exciting trips than many regular camping trips, while helping to teach children important survival skills at the same time.

Rafting, kayaking, and other water activities are good for teenagers and parents to enjoy together, too. Most littler children are too young to be trusted with water safety, or rowing a small watercraft. Parents can end up spending more of their time making sure that their children don’t end up falling in the water than they spend rowing or enjoying themselves. Once kids get to be teenagers, however, this becomes less of an issue. As a result, everyone involved is better able to really enjoy going out on the water.

Getting kids up and out of the house during summer can be no small feat sometimes. There are a lot of modern conveniences and entertainments that just aren’t available outside. With these fun summer activities, parents can encourage their children to get up and be active, and spend quality time with their families.

There are a lot of games out there, but not all of them are suitable for all ages to play together. The kind of games that young children are likely to enjoy are likely to be tedious and boring for adults, while the kind of games that adults enjoy are likely to go right over young kids’ heads. What can parents do, then, to get their young kids involved in family game night?

To begin with, ignore age ratings on games. Unless a board game contains violence or other adult concepts, parents can pretty much choose a game based on their own child’s mental state. Little kids have good memories, and often know and absorb more than they’re given credit for. If your child is well-read, fairly intelligent, and enjoys boardgames, then feel free to choose a game recommended for slightly older children. If they aren’t, you’re probably better off staying within their age range when it comes to choosing a board game.

Parents and older kids should consider splitting into teams for some games. This can help reduce the advantage that adults have over younger kids, without having to play the kind of games where adults and children are on equal footing all of the time. Things like strategy games, trivia games, and other games that are more likely to appeal to adults and older kids can be played by younger children too, as long as they are on a team with someone who is able to assist them.

Games that depend mainly on chance can be just as easy for little kids to play as they are for older kids and adults. This includes games like Life, where everyone has an equal chance to make it to the end of the board. Games that rely on dice rolls or spins to determine how player progress, instead of relying on things like strategy, are good for younger kids, teens, and adults to play together. In these games, nobody has a clear advantage at the outset, so little kids are just as likely to do well as older people are. Though they may need some help having the rules explained and interpreted for them, younger kids can often play these games easily. Some kid-centric games, like Grape Escape or Mousetrap, fall into this category. Though they’re usually touted as kids’ games, adults often derive just as much enjoyment from playing them.

When it comes to getting younger kids involved in family game night, parents should look for ways to get them involved in fun, interesting games that the whole family can enjoy. Little kids will pick up on parents feeling bored or tired of their games, just like parents can tell when kids aren’t having any fun. By choosing the right games, and setting things up so that young children can be heavily involved in game play, parents can make sure that younger kids get to enjoy family game night just as much as everyone else does.

The teenage years are some of the hardest years that anyone has to go through. They can be that much harder if teens feel like they can’t talk to their parents, or that they aren’t getting enough attention. Though teenagers might act like they want to be left alone, in reality they still need their parents’ care. It’s important for parents to try to get a feel for how much attention is too much, and spend time with their teen without crossing the line into smothering them.

Teenagers are going through a hard time developmentally, mentally, emotionally, and hormonally. They might feel ready for all kinds of things that they aren’t, and afraid of the future. Unfortunately, a lot of parents approach subjects like sex, adulthood, and maturity with their kids with just as much awkwardness as the teenagers themselves do. In every case, it’s better to cultivate a dialogue with your children before it’s time to have these kinds of conversations. Doing that is often easier said than done, however, since, to many parents, it really seems like adolescence turns their sweet children into moody strangers.

A good way to help cultivate a dialogue with your child is to spend time with them doing other things, like enjoying hobbies, crafts, and other activities together. This will provide parents with a lot of teaching moments to teach their teens about things like staying healthy, eating a good diet, and other facts that it’s important for them to learn. It will also make it easier for parents to talk to their kids about tough subjects, like sex, drugs, and adulthood, when the time comes. Without spending enough quality time with your children while they’re growing up, you might find that they aren’t as receptive to you when it comes time to have serious talks with them. This doesn’t mean that you need to be your children’s friend, just that you have to build a strong foundation with your kids before you’re able to talk to them about the important stuff, and have it stick.

The way you spend time with your kids is less important than the fact that you spend time with them. It could be doing something as simple and silly as playing games together a few times a week, or even just going fishing, hiking, or horseback riding. All of these things can constitute quality time with your kids, which will help make them more receptive to you when they need advice, or someone to confide in.

Teenagers seem to push their parents away during the times that they need them the most. To make sure that you’re still able to talk to your teen when you need to, it’s important to spend quality time with them. By scheduling a lot of fun activities for your whole family, you can help keep your child from becoming withdrawn, and encourage them to come to you with any questions that they might have.

Educational games for little kids mostly revolve around counting, letters, colors, and other concepts that adults have already grasped thoroughly. This makes them tedious, at best. It also means that older children in the family won’t get any real benefit or enjoyment out of them, either. Fortunately, if you have teenagers, there are some boardgames out there that you can use to teach them concepts that their minds are just old enough to handle, and not be bored, yourself.

Clue is a perennial favorite party game. Younger kids won’t really get it, but teenagers are sure to enjoy it. Deductive reasoning is a skill that kids need to be taught, and mystery games like Clue are a great way to help them learn it. By going through the process of gradually narrowing down their list of suspects, murder weapons, and scenes, teenagers learn how to deduce a conclusion from the evidence they are given. This will not only help them become better at mystery games like Clue, it will help them learn to apply deductive reasoning in the adult world, as well.

Games like Risk, Stratego, and Axis and Allies are also good for teaching teenagers. These are all strategy games, and all of them require different kinds of strategy from their players. Teens will need to be able to come up with a plan to win, and be able to alter their plan to accommodate changes in their situation. Best of all, they’ll need to learn to come up with better strategies than their opponents, too. Unlike games that just require a roll of the dice or a spin of a spinner to win, these games require players to do some serious thinking. The right strategies are rewarded with victory, while failing to plan ahead well enough results in defeat.

Lastly, games like Life are also good for teaching teenagers. While Life doesn’t teach kids about things like strategy or deductive reasoning, it does teach them about life. With all of the different things that life can throw at them, this game does a fairly good job of showing kids what can happen if you go to college versus not going to college, how to pay off student loans, what happens when you buy a house, and how families grow. It certainly isn’t an educational game in the traditional sense of the word, but parents can still use it to teach their kids about some of the facets of the real world, like jobs, families, and home ownership.

Though the concept of teaching kids through board games is hardly a new one, there are certain skills that a teenager’s mind needs to cultivate. Unlike simple counting games, or basic word games suitable for younger kids, these games place an emphasis on skills like strategy, deductive reasoning, and responsible planning. With these games, teenagers learn more of the skills that they will need to succeed as adults, as opposed to the skills that they simply need to do well in school.

Though they aren’t often thought of as educational, boardgames can be a useful way for kids to learn. This is because unlike lessons in school, boardgames require kids to use the knowledge and concepts that they pick up to win the game. That said, there are some boardgames that are a bit more educational than others.

Scrabble, Upwords, and other word games are probably the cream of the crop when it comes to educational boardgames for adults and teens. Younger kids generally don’t have the vocabulary strength to really do well at these games, but teenagers and adults are on a more level playing field. Parents can use games like these to test their children’s vocabulary and teach them new words, though parents may find that they end up being taught a few words, themselves.

Games like Monopoly are also good for teenagers. Once again, games like this are generally unsuitable for little kids, since the games themselves are very competitive, and require a knowledge of things like math and strategy that they haven’t developed yet. Teens are generally just old enough for these games, and they’re a useful way for them to sharpen their bargaining, strategy, and other skills that they’ll need to use in the real world.

Strategy games like Settlers of Catan are also good for teens. This game requires players to act as settlers, and build up their colonies by harvesting resources and trading with other players. If it sounds involved, it’s because it is. This game is challenging, and demands a lot of strategy from players if they’re going to succeed at it. The game rules and mechanics are fairly simple, but its dynamics are very complex. This makes it a very easy game for teens and parents to learn, but a very hard one for anyone to ultimately end up mastering.

Lastly, chess is a great learning game for teens. Young children will probably have trouble remembering all of the complex rules and moves in chess, while many teenagers are just old enough to begin to grasp the game’s subtlety and complexity. Chess has a wide variety of pieces, all of which can make different moves under different circumstances. Some people spend their whole lives mastering the game, while others play it strictly for fun, or to relax, or because it helps them think. Chess will help sharpen your teenager’s ability to plan ahead, and develop a strategy. Chess is also a game with timeless appeal, so teaching it to your teenager means that they will probably end up teaching it to their own teenagers further on down the line.

It might be hard to get your teenager away from their computer or their video games, but family board games can be just as much fun as they are educational. By playing games like these with your teens, you’re showing them a new way to have fun, and helping to fine-tune their young minds at the same time.

Yoga is an ancient practice that has found modern acceptance around the world. Devotees use different poses to strengthen their bodies, improve their flexibility, and calm and center their minds. It’s a great way to exercise, a great way to relax, and is just as beneficial for children as it is for adults. Taking a yoga-centric vacation to a yoga retreat is a great idea for a family getaway.

A lot of resorts, cruise ships, and other vacation venues offer yoga classes or sessions, but these aren’t quite the same as a yoga retreat. These are usually just tacked on to provide a respite and opportunity to exercise to vacationers, while a yoga retreat is focused entirely around yoga, and how it can help your family bond and grow as a unit. Yoga helps kids and parents become less stressed, and lower stress means less argumentative kids, less frustrated parents, and a happier, more cohesive family as a whole. Taking a retreat to fully relax and discover the benefits of practicing yoga can have an impact far beyond simple exercise, so parents should definitely consider a retreat for their families versus a vacation that happens to include yoga.

Most, if not all, yoga retreats are offered in beautiful, pristine locations. There are no televisions, video games, or other things to distract vacationers from being with each other, which makes them great for families with hectic, fast-paced lifestyles that cut into their quality time. Though these retreats are off the beaten path, as a rule, there are still a large number of them, which makes it easy to find one in your home state. Choose a yoga retreat that’s a good drive away, but not too far, to allow your family some time to transition between their time at the retreat, and their time back at home.

Yoga retreats designed specifically for families often aim to improve communication and relationships between family members. This can be especially helpful for parents with children going through difficult phases of mental development. Not all retreats are family-oriented, so if that is your ultimate goal in finding a yoga retreat for your family, it’s a good idea to look for one that’s specifically geared toward yoga for families, as opposed to just yoga for parents and children. Sometimes, there’s a world of difference between the two.

Finding the right yoga retreat for your family might not be easy, but it is guaranteed to be worth the effort. Yoga allows children and adults alike to become more calm, focused, and confident. It can heal bodies, quiet minds, and soothe troubled hearts. Going to a yoga retreat as a family is a great idea that will continue to pay off well into the future.

All kids want to imitate things that adults do especially younger ones. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that cooking will make them want to join in and help. While there are few safe cooking activities that kids can do, there are some things that will help them feel like they’re making a contribution, and give parents the chance to teach their young ones about how cooking and baking work.

Simple, cold foods like salads and sandwiches are better for young kids to help out with. These don’t require any heat, so there’s no chance of burns. If all of the ingredients are sliced and prepared by a parent, all that’s left for a child to do is assemble the food. While this isn’t really cooking, per se, it gives kids an easy snack or side dish that they can make to contribute to the family meal.

Knives and hot pots and pans should be kept away from youngsters at all times, of course, but there is no reason why a child shouldn’t be allowed to do the mixing, adding, and shaking aspects of some cooked recipes. Parents can lay pre-measured ingredients out for kids, and supervise while they add them. Things like soups and sauces are good for this, since many ingredients can be added to food while it is still cool. Sautés and other dishes involving hot oil or butter aren’t, since it’s easy for hot fats to splatter and cause burns. Lasagna made with sauce and noodles prepared by parents beforehand is a good hot dish that only requires assembly- kids can work on layering the cheese, noodles, and sauce, and parents can do the actual heating. Helping to cook hot foods is fun for kids, and serves as a demonstration for how some principles of biology and chemistry work. Parents can explain how vegetables grow and provide people with food, and how heat makes veggies soft, tomatoes turn into sauce, and cheese melt.

Baking is another aspect of cooking that kids really love. While it can be more complicated than cooking, simple baked goods like cookies or cakes from a mix are easy to make with children. If ingredients are measured for them, they can add them in, and kids like stirring cake batter and squishing up cookie dough. Sugar cookies are a particular favorite, since kids also enjoy cutting out fun shapes for the cookies, and decorating them with frosting afterward. While more complicated recipes, like soufflés and breads, probably aren’t very good for kids to help with, the majority of baked foods are easy and fun to work on together.

Cooking with children is a great way to get kids interested in eating well and learning where food comes from. Most kids are naturally intrigued by the idea of cooking, and getting to do it alongside their parents is both fun and educational for them. Best of all, you all get to have fun eating the results, too!

Learning a new language is a great way to expand your family’s horizons. What’s more, being bilingual offers people a definite advantage in the job market. While that may seem like a long way away if your children are still young, the fact is that kids learn new tongues most easily at an early age. So, learning a new language as a family can provide some definite benefits to both kids and parents.

For starters, picking up a new language is easier if you have someone you can practice on. It’s estimated that a foreigner can pick up a language passably well in just a few months by being immersed in it, meaning that they are surrounded by signs, magazines, and people that force them to read and speak the language on a daily basis. No matter how well they claim to work, no language tapes can come close to providing the same level of ease and fluency as being immersed in a language can. While learning a new language together as a family isn’t the same as immersion, it will certainly make things easier than only having a book, tape, or video to go on.

Learning a new language as a family also provides several teaching moments for parents and kids. During the course of picking up a new language, parents can teach children about the country and culture that the language came from. Kids have a lot of fun learning about how idioms differ from language to language, and even about the way that animals make different sounds according to French or Spanish than they do according to English (as it turns out, those yellow and white bugs that say “buzz” in English actually go “summ summ” in German!). This is great for children whose parents or grandparents come from a different country than the one they’re growing up in, since it can give them a better sense of their family’s roots.

Lastly, however far off it may be, providing kids with a solid foundation in a second language will make them more appealing to employers and schools further on down the line. More and more high-paying jobs desire employees who can speak another language, whether it’s Spanish, French, Mandarin, or Japanese. By learning a new language with your family, you’re not only having fun and teaching your kids more about the world and their history; you are better preparing them for being adults.

No matter which language you choose to learn with your family, all of them will allow you to spend quality time expanding your children’s knowledge of the world around them. By choosing to learn one together, you can all work as a team to learn a language faster and more fluently than you could alone, and have fun as a group in the process.

For most people, hearing the word “karaoke” conjures up images of people singing badly in bars. The truth is, though, that singing is fun, even when there isn’t alcohol involved. Children love to sing and dance, and there are several tapes of kids’ versions of popular songs on the market that can attest to that. So, for the family able to find the right equipment, family karaoke games can be a really fun way to spend an evening.

Karaoke-based video games are popular right now. With these, instead of a regular video game controller, the player uses a special microphone hooked up to their game console. Each player or team takes turns singing a song, and the game automatically grades them on how well they knew the words, their tempo, and whether or not they were on-key. The singer or team with the best score is the winner. These games are available for a few different genres, though rock and pop are the most popular. Some of them also offer users the ability to download new content to expand their song selection, which helps give these games a lot of replay value. Unlike regular video games, all players need to do is sing, so those who aren’t very video game-savvy don’t have to worry about being at a disadvantage. Parents and kids who aren’t familiar with all of the words to the most recent chart-toppers need not worry, either- just like real karaoke, these games provide all of the lyrics for you.

It’s also possible to purchase actual karaoke machines, if video games aren’t your family’s style. These look like a big speaker with a CD player or mp3 player input on top, and one or more microphones. To use them as a karaoke machine, you have to purchased CDs or mp3s of the music portion of a song, and look up the lyrics on the internet or in a CD booklet. For very young children, there are sing-along tapes and DVDs available of songs from classic cartoons, movies, and kids’ shows, or versions of popular radio songs that have been covered by kids. While these things aren’t really “games” in the same sense that video games are since there’s no scoring, they are fun karaoke activities for families to do together.

Though karaoke is still a popular staple of many bars, karaoke games and machines for home use have made it a great way for families to spend time with each other. Whether your family is a bunch of video game fanatics, or whether they’d rather just sing without having to worry about competing, karaoke games and machines offer the perfect excuse to relax, hang out, and be silly together.
