Our forebears once keepers of the land -- now reside in it under gardens of stone and grass. Our Family has a long history that is tied to Earth and Faith.

I’m just a farmer, plain and simple, not of royal birth, but rather, a worker of the earth.

I know not of riches, but rather, of patches on my britches

I know of drought and rain, of pleasure and pain.

I know of the good and the bad, the happy and the sad.

I am a man of emotions, a man who loves this land, and the beauty of its sand.

I know of a Spring's fresh flow and Autumn's golden glow, of a newborn calf's hesitation and the eagle's destination.

I know of tall pines and long, waiting lines of the warmth of campfires and the agony of flat tires.

I'm a man who loves his job and the life I live.

I'm a reaper of harvest and the sower of seeds and the tender of stock.

I know of planting corn and bailing hay and animals going astray.

I live in a complex world, but my faith guides me.

I am a man who works with God; I cannot succeed without His help,

For you see, I'm just a farmer, plain and simple.

The Story Tellers – Across Generations

(1 Nov 2012) – Somewhere in my Heart I heard the echoes of my Family calling me across the generations. In June 2009, I answered the call by beginning to research my Family History. When I began, I did not know even the birth locations or birth dates of my parents. The names of my grandparents were just "Grandpa" and "Granny" and I knew only that they were older than my parents. The names of my great grandparents were unknown to me as were many Uncles and Aunts and Cousins. The Story of my Family was never told in my hearing, so I began my genealogy research with meager details and without any experience with internet search, genealogy programs, or genealogical research techniques. Humble beginnings for sure!

Within six months, I had purchased a computer, printer, and scanner, subscribed to www.Ancestry.com, joined a genealogy club, attended several family research seminars, and contacted some of the few older Family members that were known to me. As my experience increased and Family details became known, my postings on my Ancestry Tree grew. As of this date, on our Ancestry Tree there are over 50,000 postings of Family members, documents, census records, birth and death records, marriage and divorce records, land records, lots of photos, and many Family and Historical Stories. Whew! So did I answer the 'call' or what ? !

In 2012, I joined the Findagrave Organization and have the honor of being the creator and maintainer of several Findagrave Online Memorials. This is a wonderful group of people that volunteer freely giving their time and Heart, using their private individual funds to travel and to research the graves in cemeteries in the USA, and posting their findings online on www.findagrave.com with photos of grave markers and cemeteries, and short bio and orbits of those who have found their rest. I have found so many of my Family Members, now passed away, online in the Findagrave Memorials. My Family Members are at their rest in locations where I cannot visit to pay my respects in person, but thanks to Findagrave, I can visit the graves online and leave a 'word and flowers in remembrance' on their Findagrave Memorial. A SPECIAL THANK YOU to all the Findagrave volunteers for the research, travel, photos, and posting these memorials for my Family on Findagrave. It is so much appreciated!!!

For me, the Journey into Family History has been full of surprises, joy, and tears. There is a feeling of being 'connected' to the Family when I learn the Story of each Family Member, that seems not to diminish, even when the Story is ferreted from sources on the internet, genealogical societies, county records, legal documents, military records, and historical resources.

"The Story Tellers ... We are the Chosen"

We are the chosen. In each Family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors -- to put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the Family Story, and to feel that somehow they know and approve.

Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the Storytellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us, "Tell our Story." So, we do.

In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors, "You have a wonderful family; you would be proud of us." How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow, there was love there for me? I cannot say.

It goes beyond just documenting facts.

It goes to who I am, and why I do the things I do.

It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying, "I can't let this happen." The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh.

It goes to doing something about it.

It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today.

It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their Family.

It goes to deep pride that they fought and some died to make and keep us a Nation.

It is of equal pride and love that our mothers struggled to give us birth.

It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they all were doing it for us, that we might be born who we are, that we might remember them. So, we do.

Without any of them, we could not exist, and so we love each one, as far back as we can reach.

With love, caring, and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are they and they are the sum of who we are.

So, as a scribe called, I tell the Story of my Family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take my place in the long line of Family Storytellers.

That is why I do my Family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and restore the memory or greet those who we had never known before and put flesh on the bones.

(7 Oct 2012 – The Family Bible is a handwritten record of the births, marriages, and deaths of Family Members. I have had the honor of holding in my hands and photographing the Family Bible of Jobe W Scott and his wife Rebecca Scott. These two are my second great grandparents. The Family Bible was originally purchased by Jobe and Rebecca in September 1851 in Delaware, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada, and today is over 161 years old and very fragile; but the Family has grown and is very strong. Introduction

This Bible is a legacy of its first owners Jobe W Scott (22 Sep 1817 Ontario, Canada – 3 Dec 1893 Superior, McPherson, Kansas) and Rebecca Scott (5 Feb 1820 Ontario, Canada – 1899 Superior, McPherson, Kansas).

NOTE: ANY errors or inconsistencies in this Short Family Lineage Story are my own, from typing, spelling, or research errors, and will be addressed as time permits and information is gathered. Comments are welcomed in the spirit they are offered to this compiler. All dates are approximate, for the records and documents that I have researched have different dates and even locations--very interesting!!

Lineage Details

Jobe W Scott is the fifth of six sons of Samuel Enos Scott (1774-1861) and Christine Bowman/Baumann Scott (1775-1848). Jobe's siblings are: John Amos Scott (1797-1897), Jacob Scott (1797-?), Charles Scott (1804-?), Adam Bowman Scott (1812-?), and Enos Scott (1824-1908). The parents of Rebecca Scott (maiden name also Scott) are unknown to this compiler at this time.

The Scott Family was such a large group and owned so much land in the same area near St Thomas, Elgin, Ontario, Canada, that a Hamlet was named for them and was called Scottsville, Westminster, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada. In 1993, Scottsville was annexed by the City of London, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada. Scottsville is a dispersed rural community and unincorporated area near Highways 401 and 402. LOCATION LINKS:

Scottsville is an dispersed rural community on Colonel Talbot Road in Westminster Township, Middlesex County, Ontario. It is south of the Village of Lambeth and of Ontario Highway 402 and of Westminster Road. It is north of the village of Talbotville Royal, of Ontario Highway 401 and of Decker Road.

In 1993, it was annexed by the City of London, Ontario, along with a number of other small villages and hamlets around the city.

Jobe W Scott and his wife Rebecca were married on 11 Nov 1840 with the ceremony witnessed by Jobe's older brother Jacob Scott and younger brother Enos Scott. The ceremony was performed by Reverend M Burnham in the St Thomas Church, Elgin, Ontario, Canada.

The St Thomas Church is today a museum and is still located in St Thomas, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. There are several websites with interesting info about the St Thomas Church and the area. The Church was built between 1822 – 1824 and is one of the oldest structures in St Thomas, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. The Church was used for religious service until 1877, and then another Church was used for services. The Church was founded on land donated by Captain Daniel Rapelje, the founder of the Township of St Thomas.

The St Thomas Church Graveyard next to the St Thomas Church is maintained beautifully with the original markers. {If I were able to take a walk in the St Thomas Church Graveyard, I wonder how many names of my Scott and Bowman/Baumann Family would be on the aged grave markers.}

In 1982, the St Thomas Church was designated a historical property and the Church site was made a heritage site. In 1986, it was restored and renovated. The Church is known today as the Old St Thomas Church and is open for touring. The Bible has a brown paper cover, badly worn, sized 8-1/2 x 11, and 2-3/4 thick. The paper pages are yellowed in color and very fragile with lots of age spots. I feel the Book was exposed to weather as it smells musty and looks like it was damp at one time. It has some illustrations.

Stewardship of Bible

The Bible is currently (as of this posting in Oct 2012) in the care and stewardship of Jeannette Scott (born 10 Jan 1934 Delano, Kern, California). Jeannette is the great granddaughter of Jobe W Scott and Rebecca Scott.

Jeannette is the youngest sister of Margaret Lucille Scott Higinbotham (1919-2001) and Dorothy Helen Scott Tarr (1923-1982) {my Mother}.

The Mom and Dad of Jeannette, Margaret, and Dorothy Helen are Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bennett Scott (1897-1980) and Laurel Flynn Scott (1896-1979) {my maternal grandparents}. Laurel Flynn Scott is the grandson of Jobe W Scott and Rebecca Scott.

Aunt Mamie [Mary Rebecca Elizabeth Scott Webster] is the youngest sister of Laurel Flynn Scott and granddaughter of Jobe W Scott and Rebecca Scott.

Aunt Gladys [Gladys Iona Scott Dunlap] is the oldest sister of Laurel Flynn Scott and granddaughter of Jobe W Scott and Rebecca Scott.

Closing Thoughts

The Family Bible of Jobe W Scott and Rebecca Scott is more than just that of God's story and a few pages with the names of their descendants. It is a Family Heirloom whose pages hold the hopes and prayers of a Family with firm beliefs in God and founded in the daily living in His Word. Today, while researching my maternal lineage, I discovered a Family Connection to Charlemagne also known as Charles The Great. WOW! Dorothy Hazel Tarr.

Below I have first posted some brief notes about Charles The Great, then some notes about our Family Connection to this Ancestor!

Who is Charlemagne? Below are some excerpts from Internet sources.

“He was large and strong, and of lofty stature, though not disproportionately tall (seven-feet tall). His head was round and well formed, his eyes very large and vivacious, his nose a little long, his hair white, and his face jovial. His appearance was always stately and very dignified, whether he was standing or sitting. …. His gait was firm, his whole carriage manly, and his voice clear.” Einhard, Life of Charlemagne, (New York: Harper and Brothers, 1880), pp. 56-7.

Charlemagne ( /ˈʃ ɑr l ɨ m eɪ n/; French pronunciation: [ʃaʁləmaɲ]; c. 742 – January 28, 814), also known as Charles the Great (Latin: Carolus Magnus or Karolus Magnus) or Charles I, was the founder of the Carolingian Empire, reigning from 768 until his death. He expanded the Frankish kingdom, adding Italy, subduing the Saxons and Bavarians, and pushing his frontier into Spain. The oldest son of Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon, Charlemagne was the first Emperor in Western Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire four centuries earlier.

Becoming King of the Franks in 768 following the death of his father, Charlemagne was initially co-ruler with his brother Carloman I. Carloman I's sudden death in 771 under unexplained circumstances left Charlemagne as the undisputed ruler of the Frankish Kingdom. Through his military conquests, he expanded his kingdom into an empire that incorporated much of Western and Central Europe.

Charlemagne continued his father's policy towards the papacy and became its protector, removing the Lombards from power in Italy, and leading an incursion into Muslim Spain. He also campaigned against the peoples to his east, forcibly Christianizing them along the way (especially the Saxons), eventually subjecting them to his rule after a protracted war. Charlemagne reached the height of his power in 800 when he was crowned as "Emperor" by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day.

Called the "Father of Europe" (pater Europae), Charlemagne's empire united most of Western Europe for the first time since the Roman Empire. His rule spurred the Carolingian Renaissance, a revival of art, religion, and culture through the medium of the Catholic Church. Through his foreign conquests and internal reforms, Charlemagne encouraged the formation of a common European identity. Both the French and German monarchies considered their kingdoms to be descendants of Charlemagne's empire.

Charlemagne died in 814 after having ruled as Emperor for almost fifty years. He was laid to rest in his imperial capital of Aachen.

What is the Family Connection?

[NOTE: The figures in square brackets below show the number of relationships required to connect to Charlemagne.]

My personal Family Connection is through my maternal lineage according to the research material; and it appears that the number of relationships required to connect me to Charlemagne is [35]. My mother Dorothy Helen Scott Tarr (1923-1982) is [34]. My maternal Grand Aunt Pearl Harbour Jones Bennett (1875-1939) is [33]. Pearl Harbour Jones Bennett was married to Thomas Smith Bennett (1873-1959). Thomas Smith Bennett was the older brother of Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bennett Scott (1897-1980)—my maternal grandmother and my mother's mom. I am related to Pearl through several Family Branches; and this is because the paternal first great grandparents of Pearl, the maternal second great grandparents of Thomas, the second great grandparents of Mary, my mother's maternal third great grandparents, and my maternal fourth great grandparents are the same: Daniel Thompson Payne (1780-1858) and Martha Sarah Frazier Payne (1783-1849).

The Family Connection to Charlemagne that I have followed is through Pearl's maternal lineage and Pearl's mother Melvina Frances Harbour Jones (1836-1917) who is [32].

(22 Sep 2012 – In June 2009, at age 63, I began to research my Family History, not even knowing the full names or birth dates of my grandparents or their parents. With the help of some Family members, the Internet, findagrave.com, and Ancestry.com, the Story of my Family was revealed. However, there was a box covered in dust that sat in the back of my closet, where faded photographs some over 100 years old awaited—ready to be awakened. The faces looking back at me from those photos were members of my Family from my maternal lineage, whose Life's Journey began and finished before I was born--their names not written on the backs of the photos, their Life's Story forever unknown and passed. Set out of time and place -

Of loved ones' Lives -

Who are these folks looking back at me -

Through time's photography?

They are a part of me -

And, I call them Family!

Subject—Male about age 27 appears to be well to do by the style of his clothes and the terrific grooming of his mustache, beard, and hair. This looks to be a newspaper cutout that was mounted on to hard paper.

Subject—Male about age 30 appears to be well to do by the clothes and grooming of his beard, mustache, and hair. The photo was done professionally in a studio on a colorized "yellow" paper or else it has colored from age. Printed on the lower part of the photo is: "MORRISON, HAYMARKET THEATRE, 161 WEST MADISON ST., CHICAGO, ILL."

Subject—Male about age 40. This fine looking gentleman is dressed in suit and bow tie, with wonderful eyes, eyebrows, mustache, beard, lots of hair, and a wonderful nose. The photo is very faded but is in good condition. It looks to be made by a professional photographer or studio for such a well-lighted-close-up. (I wonder though if he was teased about his large nose during his lifetime. He has wonderful nice eyes when you look at the photo magnified; he is just MAGNIFICENT and KIND LOOKING.)

The Old Scrapbook

It speaks of times now long ago
In a voice so soft and low,

“Come, my friend, see what you can see,
Come and take a look at me.

My bright colors are faded and dim,
But my spirit is bright within,

Pictures of people in days gone by,
Laughing and crying, we know not why,

Cards and pamphlets, and programs old,
What are the stories they have told?

So many memories my pages fill,

These strangers in the box,

The footwear is some type of shoe with a "spat like" covering, which I have seen in old war movies. Two males to the right have some type of square tag on their shirts; but I could not read it when I enlarged this photo. There are no signs in the yard or on the buildings. It could be some kind of recruitment training camp for WW I or some type of work-program-camp. I do NOT believe they are prisoners for they are too well groomed and are looking very happy and content, with some of them putting their arms about their fellows! The time of year would be Spring or Fall, because of the sparse leaves on the trees in the background.]

Golden Memories -- The Clothesline

(20 Sep 2012 – So many golden memories of my maternal grandparents stay with me. These memories seem just as fresh now in my mind and heart albeit they are from over 50 years ago. Below are some shared memories of those years. Moreover, I've also added a poem and rulebook that I found on the Internet about Clotheslines -- that I was delighted with and hope you enjoy! INTRODUCTION

For several years in 1952-1954, I lived with my Maternal Grandparents Laurel Flynn Scott (1896 Oklahoma-1979 Oregon) and "Betty" Mary Elizabeth Bennett Scott (1897 Missouri-1980 Oregon) in Pond Township, California. The township is located in Central California and is almost just a stop sign where two roads intersect. My Grandparents were farm managers for several years for two different farms as I recall. Grandpa grew and harvested cotton, while Gram worked in the house and performed the typical farmer's wife tasks. Somehow, Gram made everything fun and interesting to me. Nothing seemed too hard or boring!!! She had a wonderful way about her! Grandpa had the same spirit about him, but this is Gram's story.

Gram makes home arts fun

Gram was a great one for cooking, canning, gardening, sewing, cleaning, washing clothes, ironing, quilting, embroidery -- the list goes on and on. And, oh my word, could she "kill" a chicken for the dinner table menu -- but that is another story. This story is about how I learned home arts from Gram.

Washing and Ironing Clothes

There was a whole procedure that needed to be followed in order to do the washing and ironing if you did it the way Gram did.

(1) The washing was done on the farmhouse back porch using a "wringer" and "gear shift" washer machine. The soap had to be measured, the water had to be heated and added with a long hose from the faucet of the porch double sink, then the washer gearshift was started and the soap and water mixed for a few minutes. The pre-sorted clothes were put into the large tub, the gearshift turned on, and the egg timer set for 15 minutes. Then the gears were turned off and the water was drained out of the washer tub via a hose into the porch double sink drain. The clothes washer wringer was unlocked-from-its-stationary-position and you had to swing its "arm" out over the porch double sink. Then the clothes were removed from the washing machine's tub and "run through the wringer", which squeezed out the water from the clothes via the clothes washer wringer double rollers. The squeezed out water drained out into the porch double sink via a slanted drain tray. There was an art to hand feeding the clothes into the wringer rollers!! The pillowcases must have the closed end go in into the wringer rollers first, so that the water and air are not trapped inside the pillowcase! If you forgot to do this, the pillowcase could burst and the water could splash all over you! The same cautionary applied to other items such as shirts, dresses, and socks! For even if the clothing items did not burst, the clothing could be damaged from the pressure of the escaping air and water. Then too the clothing could get tangled in the rollers. When this happened, the rollers had to be halted and opened in order to untangle and release the clothing wrapped around the rollers. You had to be ever watchful and quick to take corrective action! (chuckles!) It was a real art to feed clothing into the wringer rollers—and it made for lots of unexpected doings on washday! (chuckles!) Then too, you had to be careful and watch what you were doing, for you could easily get hurt with all those moving parts and procedures. I recall comedian routines where the comedian would get their tie caught in an old wringer washing machine -- which is very possible if you are careless or unlucky! Well anyway, then new hot or warm water was added to the washer machine tub. The squeezed clothes were put back by hand manually into the tub and the gears turned on for 5 minutes--this was the rinse "cycle". Then the clothes were put through the wringer one last time. Now, the clothes were washed, wringer squeezed, and ready to be hung on the clothesline outside. Grandpa would put up the "removable" clothesline so I could use an old rag to wrap around the clothesline wire to clean the wire, for it got very dusty and dirty in between washdays. Then finally, Gram and I would take a basket of clothes and hang then on the clothesline with clothespins. The clothespins were in a cute bag that Gram made and that hung on the clothesline and could be pushed along as you hung up clothes. Gram said the clothes had to be "bone dry" before they could be taken down and brought indoors. I just loved this whole process. Even though these days, I use a modern washer and dryer, I think of Gram and Grandpa every time I do my laundry!!!

(2) After the clothes were "bone dry", Gram and I would take down the clothes and take them indoors in large baskets. Then we would lay each garment on the large dining room table and "sprinkle water" on the clothes using a soda glass bottle with a special sprinkle-top that was put in the opening. It always seemed funny to me, that the clothes had to be "bone dry" before we wet them!! However, that's the way Gram did it! After each item of clothing was sprinkled, it was very important to fold and roll the clothes and put them in a bag for at least an hour. (It seems like yesterday, that I sprinkled those clothes, the memories are so precious and strong.) In order to do a proper job of ironing the clothes, the clothes needed to be slightly and evenly damp -- for in that day, the electric irons did not have a steam or spray function. After some hours, we would set up the ironing board, electric iron, and a rag with a bowl of water nearby. (The bowl of water and rag were used to dampen the clothes if there were any areas that were still "bone dry".) Gram would let me iron Grandpa's large handkerchiefs -- this was a real honor for me and Grandpa always said how nice I did them. In addition, I ironed embroidered pillowcases, embroidered kitchen linen, Gram's large farmer wife apron pennies, and anything else that was mostly flat. I would take an apron, handkerchief, or pillowcase out of the "sprinkle clothes bag" and proceed to do a masterful job of ironing the item to lots of praise from Gram. (Even though I use an electric steam iron with a sprayer built in now, I still think of my Gram and Grandpa while I do this household task.)

How to embroider

Gram taught me how to embroider household items such as aprons, doilies, handkerchiefs, pillowcases, kitchen linen, clothing, and whatever. She kept a whole range of colors of embroidery thread in an embroidery thread keeper that she made herself. It was just magic the way she kept everything so neat and organized. She showed me how to iron an embroidery pattern on a kitchen towel and then to select colors for the embroidery design. She showed me several techniques for embroidery knots, stitchery, and overlays. My attempts were always given lots of praise. I was so proud to sit with her while she did her own embroidery and I had my own to do too!!! Grandpa always seemed to come by and give Gram and me lots of praise.

Making clothes

Gram made all her own clothes. She would purchase the fabric at JC Pennys or Woolworths. Clothes patterns were purchased along with thread, pins, needles, and other items. She would lay the fabric out on the large dining room table and pin the clothing pattern to the fabric. Then Gram would let me help cut out the easier pieces (those with straight lines) with scissors. Then she would show me how to "thread" her old peddle (non-electric) SINGER sewing machine. I just loved the rhythm of my feet on the peddle and the noise "quickity clickity click". I made lots of pillowcases, kitchen linens, and handkerchiefs (straight lines again). Gram always "tailored" things to my level of experience so I never felt overwhelmed, inadequate, or incompetent ever! On the contrary, I felt very proud of my efforts while I was doing the same things Gram did (even though they were smaller in scale or simpler in complexity.)

Cleaning house

Gram also taught me how to do a "proper" job of "dry dusting" the linoleum floors (no carpeting in the farmhouse). We used a special "dry dust mop" that had a long pole with a bunch of "old rags" that Gram attached to the bottom. With this magical tool, I would go around the floor of the farmhouse each morning after breakfast was done. When the dry mop got too dirty, Gram and I would replace the dry dust mop rags with "clean rags". Gram would wash the dirty rags so they could be used again. We did not iron these rags.

Other arts of keeping a home

There was so much to learn –

How to make the greatest pan drippings gravy,

How to cook an egg for Grandpa that was just the way he liked them,

How to dry the dishes just right and put them away,

How to make a bed with clean linen, smooth, "fluffed" pillows, and straightened bedspread,

How to crochet doilies, pillow sheet edges, and linen edges,

How to "kill", dress, and cook a chicken,

How to plant, harvest, and 'put-up" or can bounty from a garden full of vegetables and melons,

How to shop at JC Pennys, Woolworths, and the post office,

How to go to the Church of Christ that Grandpa and another relative started in Delano, California, and

How to LOVE and be LOVED by Gram and Grandpa!!!!!

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Although the clothesline is empty now and the clothespins are weathered, my memories remain young and fresh of those few golden years with my Grandpa and Gram. I LOVE you with all my Heart and MISS you both every day!!

The Clothesline

A clothesline was a news forecast
To neighbors passing by.
There were no secrets you could keep
When clothes were hung to dry.

It also was a friendly link
For neighbors always knew
If company had stopped on by
To spend a night or two.

For then you'd see the fancy sheets
and towels on the line;
You'd see the company table clothes
With intricate design.

The line announced a baby's birth
To folks who lived inside
As brand new infant clothes were hung
So carefully with pride.

The ages of the children could
So readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed
You'd know how much they'd grown.

It also told when illness struck,
As extra sheets were hung;
Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe, too,
Haphazardly were strung.

It said, "Gone on vacation now"
When lines hung limp and bare.
It told, "We're back!" when full lines sagged
With not an inch to spare.

New folks in town were scorned upon
If wash was dingy gray,
As neighbors raised their brows, and looked
Disgustedly away.

But clotheslines now are of the past
For dryers make work less.
Now what goes on inside a home
Is anybody's guess

I really miss that way of life.
It was a friendly sign
When neighbors knew each other best
By what hung on the line!

12 GUIDE RULES for CLOTHESLINES

(If you don’t even know what clotheslines are, better skip this).

1. You had to hang the socks by the toes…..NOT the top.

2. You hung pants by the bottom/cuffs….NOT the waistbands.

3. You had to wash the clothesline before hanging any clothes – walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the line.

4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always have “whites” with “whites” and hang them first.

5. You never hung a shirt by the shoulders – always by the tail! What would the neighbors think?

6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven’s Sake!

7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your “unmentionables” in the middle (perverts and busy bodies y’know!)

8. It didn’t matter if it was sub-zero weather….clothes would “freeze-dry”.

9. Always gather the clothespins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were “tacky”.

10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothespins, but shared one of the clothespins with the next washed item.

11. Clothes off of the line before dinnertime, neatly folded in the clothesbasket, and ready to be ironed.

12. IRONED???!!!, WELL, THAT”S A WHOLE OTHER STORY!

(19 Sep 2012 – My Family has been here since Adam and Eve, but their History has faded into the pages of "The Census Taker". Those Census pages tell a Family's Story for one point in their timeline with the recording of: their names, with their ages, gender, birth place, birth place of parents, marital status (single, married, widowed, divorced), number of children living and deceased, religion, current residence (farm, house, log cabin, rented, owned, or mortgaged), occupation, valued worth of real and personal property, whether they could read and/or write, level of schooling education, military status, and even if they owned a radio. Here then is the Family Story of my Maternal-Second-Great-Grandparents (JOBE W SCOTT and REBECCA SCOTT) and their children as revealed through the Census Taker's pages for the years 1861, 1871, 1880, and 1885. These Census pages list only the statistical details of their lives and leaves to the imagination their daily routines, challenges, failures and successes, and joys and sorrows, and hopes and prayers.

The Census

Originally Published as "Voices in My Heart"

It was the first day of census and all through the land
each pollster was ready, a black book in hand.
He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride,
his books and his quills were tucked close by his side.

A long dusty ride down a road barely there,
toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air.
The woman was tired, with lines on her face
and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place.

She gave him some water as they sat at the table,
and she answered his questions the best she was able.
He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few.
The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two.

She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red.
His sister, she whispered, was napping in bed.
She noted each person who lived there with pride,
and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside.

He noted the sex, the color, the age,
the marks from the quill soon filled up the page.
At the number of children, she nodded her head,
and he saw her lips quiver for the ones that were dead.

The places of birth she "never forgot"...
Was it Carolina, or Tennessee, or Georgia or not?
They came from Scotland, on that she was clear,
But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here.

They spoke of employment, of schooling and such.
They could read some and write some...though really not much.
When the questions were answered, his job there was done,
so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun.

We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear,
"May God bless you all for another ten years."
Now picture a time warp...it's now you and me
as we search for the people on our family tree.

We squint at the census, and scroll down so slow,
as we search for that entry from long, long ago.
Could they only imagine on that long ago day
that the entries they made would affect us this way.

If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel
and the searching that makes them so increasingly real?
We can hear if we listen, the words they impart
through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart.

Therefore, the Family Researcher is challenged by the limited documentation that is available—which is frequently just CENSUS records; however, with a little imagination, some research about the timeline-in-history, the locations, and events in history-- a Family History can be "painted".

Introduction

In our Family, there are many surprises of the ordinary and the extraordinary variety. Here is a Short Family Story that took many centuries to record, but only a few paragraphs to tell.

A Family Story Worth Millions

We begin this Family Story where I first began my Jennings Family Research, with WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS {my maternal-second–Cousin-4x-removed -- which means he is a very close cousin to me in DNA — just several generations distant from me}. My Cousin WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS and I have the same Great Grandparents. His Paternal-First-Great-Grandfather ZEBULON JENNINGS JUNIOR (1735-1776) is also my Maternal-Fifth-Great-Grandfather, more on this below.

WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS was a well-respected and well-known family genealogist and wrote several books on our Family that were published and are available free on the Internet at [http://archive.org/search.php?query=jennings%20family ]. Many of these books were distributed to Family members and have been handed down through the generations and are still in the possession of some family members. In addition, WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS was (in his time) a civil engineer and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Past President of the Ohio Society of Civil Engineers, and Past President of the Ohio Institute of Mining Engineers.

William Henry Jennings' -- Lineage

WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS was born on 15 Apr 1842 in Marietta, Washington, Ohio. He passed away at age 62 on 16 Mar 1905 in Columbus, Ohio, and is buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Fairfield, Ohio.

WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS was the second child of Junia Jennings (born 10 Sep 1800 in Fayette City, Fayette, Pennsylvania - died 19 Feb 1871 in Marietta, Washington, Ohio) and Junia's second wife Eliza Ann Reckard Jennings (born 18 Sep 1810 in Marietta, Washington, Ohio - died 7 May 1888 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio). There were two children of this union: Sarah Letitia Jennings Wiley (1834-1887) and WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS.

Junia Jennings' first wife was Hannah McCabe Jennings (born 1804 in Athens, Ohio - died on 19 Dec 1831 in Marietta, Washington, Ohio), and they were married 5 Aug 1820 in Marietta, Washington, Ohio. There were five children of this union: Charles Ludlow Jennings (1820-1884), Julia Ann McCabe Jennings (1822-1822), Robert Ferdinand Jennings (1823-1825), Mary Elizabeth Jennings (1825-1834), and Robert McCabe Jennings (1828-1864).

Hannah McCabe Jennings was the daughter of Robert McCabe (1784-1823) and Polly McCracken McCabe (1784-1823).

In 1831, Junia Jennings was a widower with three living children (ages 11, 6, and 3) to raise alone. On 2 Apr 1833 in West Virginia, Junia Jennings (age 32, widower) married his second wife Eliza Ann Reckard (age 22).

Eliza Ann Reckard Jennings was the daughter of Calvin Reckard (1760-1826) and his second wife Rhoda Borden Reckard (1771-1825).

Junia Jennings was the fifth child of nine children born of his parents Jonathan Jennings (born 14 May 1769 Westfield, Essex, New Jersey – died 2 Nov 1808 Marietta, Washington, Ohio) and Elizabeth Stephenson Jennings Nixon (born 27 Jun 1775 Westfield, New Jersey – died 22 Aug 1852 Marietta, Washington, Ohio).

Jonathan Jennings was the fourth child of six children born of his parents ZEBULON JENNINGS JUNIOR (born 26 Nov 1735 New Jersey – died 16 Oct 1776 New Jersey) and JOANNA LITTELL JENNINGS (alternate spelling Lyttle / Little) (born 13 Sep 1746 New Jersey – died after 1780 New Jersey). (NOTE: ZEBULON JENNINGS JUNIOR and JOANNA LITTLE JENNINGS are my maternal-fifth-great-grandparents. And, Jonathan Jennings is my maternal-fourth-great-grand-uncle.)

William Henry Jennings' -- Marriage and Children

On 16 May 1867, in Middleport, Meigs, Ohio, WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS married his first wife Caroline Frances Allen Jennings (born 10 May 1847 in Middleport, Meigs, Ohio - died 16 Dec 1879 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio) by Reverend T. S. Stivers, Methodist Minister and relative of the bride. There were three children of this union: Frank Washburn Jennings (1868-1938), William Arthur Jennings (1873-1902), and Walter Jennings (born 1873 - died after 1880).

Caroline Francis Allen Jennings' parents were John Newell Allen (born 25 Sep 1810 Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut - died 14 Jun 1868 Middleport, Meigs, Ohio) and his wife Cyrene Stivers Allen (born 28 Jan 1818 Meigs County, Ohio - died 24 Feb 1863 Middleport, Meigs, Ohio). Caroline Frances Allen was the fourth child of the eight children born to her parents.

On 19 Dec 1883 in Lancaster, Fairfield, Ohio, WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS, a widower at age 27 with three sons, married his second wife Frances Ann Weaver Jennings (born 24 May 1849 Ohio - died 11 Mar 1935 Ohio). The wedding was performed by Reverend William P. McLaughlin, assisted by Reverend S. A. Keene, Methodist Ministers. There was one child from this union: Mary Frances Jennings Postle (1885-1969).

Frances Ann Weaver Jennings' parents were James Weaver (1818-1898) and Rachael Ann Mytinger Weaver (1821-1897). Frances Ann was the fifth child of the eight children born to her parents.

William Henry Jennings – Autobiography

So now that we have WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS' lineage identified, I will add the following autobiography that was written by WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS, himself and published when he was age 57, in his book entitled, " A Genealogical History of the Jennings Families in England and America - Volume II The American Families", Page 76, 77, (Published in 1899, Columbus, Ohio). {NOTE: WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS passed away in 1905, just six years after this publication date.}

WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS, the compiler of these records, was educated in the public schools of Marietta, Ohio; but the strongest formative influences entering into his training were the precepts and example of his parents, whose loving memory he is pleased thus publicly to honor. As a young man, he chose the profession of Civil Engineer, which profession has determined his life's work. He was engaged as Engineer during the location and construction of the Columbus & Hocking Valley R.R. (Railroad), and afterwards was Chief Engineer, serving with this company for twenty-two years. During his term of service with this road, he necessarily familiarized himself with mines and mining, and became conversant with the geology of Ohio, especially as to the coal measures, and has published a map of the Hocking and adjacent coal fields. Since 1888, he has done general engineering work, principally in the line of organization and location railroads; at present (January 1899), he is Chief Engineer of the Hocking Valley and Lake Erie R. R. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Past President of the Ohio Society of Civil Engineers, and also Past President of the Ohio Institute of Mining Engineers. His present address is Columbus, Ohio (in 1899).

Caroline Francis Allen, the first wife of W. H. Jennings, was fourth daughter of John Newell & Cyrene (Stivers) Allen, and was a lineal descendant of Samuel Allen and Ann Allen, his wife, who emigrated from Bridgewater, Somerset County, England, and located at Braintree, Mass., in 1630. She is also a descendant of John and Priscilla Alden.

Francis Ann Weaver, second wife of W. H. Jennings, was the third daughter of James Rachel Ann (Mytinger) Weaver.

William Henry Jennings' – Family Tribute

So now that we have William Henry's lineage and life revealed, I will add the following Jennings Family Biography and Tribute that was written by William Henry Jennings, himself, about our Family in his book entitled, "A Genealogical History of the Jennings Families in England and America - Volume II The American Families", Page 76, 77, (Published in 1899, Columbus, Ohio), SOURE LINK [ http://archive.org/search.php?query=genealogical%20history%20of%20jennings ]. (NOTE: William Henry passed away in 1905, just six years after this publication date.)

In the foregoing pages [in the book mentioned above], we have taken the members of Jonathan Jennings' Family (born 14 May 1769 New Jersey- died 2 Nov 1808 Ohio) individually and endeavored to show their leading characteristics. The little that remains to be said can be said of them collectively.

When this Family came to Ohio, but twelve years had elapsed since the first settlement had been made at Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, on the Ohio Company's Purchase. Twelve years of hard labor by the colonists had made but little impression upon the compact and almost boundless forest, and Jonathan Jennings and his Family found their home an almost unbroken wilderness. Nearly all of the members of that Family lived to see the forest disappear under the ax, and in the progress of improvement, they saw the rude cabins of the pioneers give way to more pretentions dwellings; saw the broad river flowing before their doors become a highway of commerce and bear upon its bosom hundreds of steam vessels; saw their homes and the homes of their fathers connected by bands of electricity; heard the whistles of the locomotives echoing through the valley, and saw civilization spreading over all the mighty territory. In effecting this revolution, a [American] revolution accomplished by courage, industry and intelligence, they nobly bore their parts.

They did not aspire to public positions, but were willing to work hard, and content to earn independence and moderate fortunes by economy, thrift, and laborious effort.

Though their names are not exalted in history, their descendants can rejoice in the fact that they fairly won a right to the proudest title an AMERICAN can bear: THEY WERE GOOD CITIZENS.

Although their educational advantages were limited, they were all possessed of good intellect that made them respected by their neighbors.

Through the lives of all ran a deeply religious vein that was a marked characteristic. At the time of the advent of the Family into Ohio, they were Presbyterian, but there being no Church of that denomination nearby, they subsequently became Methodists.

And now that all have passed away, it is with a melancholy pleasure that we recall their stories of honorable achievements and labors of a time when the eyes now closed in death, were bright with intelligence, and the strong hearts forever stilled, were beating with life and courage. Their posterity will do well to keep always in sight the examples of their well-spent and useful lives.

My Own After-Thoughts

Although my Cousin WILLIAM HENRY JENNINGS says our Family did not have any "notable" personages, I will contradict him by adding that because of the genealogy research that I have done thus far of our FAMILY, I have found numerous persons that are well known in the history of the United States of America and across the oceans into Africa, Europe, Great Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, and other countries.

Lady Margaret Jane Scott Jennings (1672-1727) of Belfast, Ireland, was married Sir James A. Holmes (1668-1727). (Lady Margaret Jane was first-Cousin to Sarah Jennings Spencer-Churchill, First Duchess of Marlborough.) Their only child and heir to their estate was Janette Scott Jennings Holmes, who had moved permanently to the USA, circa 1700s, before the death of her father. (NOTE: Unsubstantiated info says the Holmes Estate is still intact, lodged in the Bank of England, and worth billions. Don't get too excited. For over a hundred years, many descendants and/or their attorneys have tried to find a way to get at it, but their quests always ended with no money, and, if they were too persistent, mysterious accidents. William Jennings (Jenyns or Jennens), commoner in Britain, died at Acton Place in County Suffolk, England, aged about 97 years, on 19 June 1798. His grandfather was, Humphrey Jennings (Jenyns or Jennens). William Jennings amassed a fortune documented as being in the MILLIONS that some called the largest of any commoner in Britain.

Sir Henry Morton Stanley (born John Rowlands, 1841-1904). (NOTE: Our Family is Cousins to this lineage and we have MANY connections over hundreds of years.)

Family Tale of MILLIONS
(Humphrey Jennings and William Jennings Estate)

This branch of Jennings family is of very ancient origin. They seem to have settled in England before the Norman Conquest. They were of Danish extraction, and the first to settle was a Danish captain brought into England by Canute, King of Denmark. He was baptized into the Christian faith. He had certain manors [estates and houses] lying upon the seacoast near Norwich , given him by King Canute as a reward for his former services done for his father Sweyne , King of Denmark.

Little is known of this branch of the Jennens family until the reign of King Henry VIII, 1509-1547, when one, Robert Jennens, is found in the royal household and a favorite of the King, who presented him with a sword and belt and sent him to Shottle in Derbyshire to act as chief warden, deerstalker, and ranger.

The family became very wealthy and descent follows to a William Jennings (or Jennens), who died on 19 Jun 1798 at Acton Place, County Suffolk, England, aged about 97 years. William Jennings was described as a “crusty old bachelor” and a miser, but he had amassed a fortune documented as being in the MILLIONS that some called the largest of any commoner in Britain. He is the most interesting figure in the English family and it is around his immense fortune that all the legal battles were fought for many years.

Since at his death, William Jennings died a bachelor and his estate was left intestate [no children, no brothers, and no will], his death touched off an estate "contest" among lawyers on two continents that lasted over 135 years, literally hosts of claimants appeared and The Great Jennens Case was the rich prize for which they contended.

By English common law the estate was to be divided among his first cousins, descendants of William Jennings' grandfather, Humphrey Jennings (or Jennens); and so the legacy became known as the Humphrey Jennings (Jennens) Estate.

By 1821, the succession had been essentially settled, with the family of Lord Curzon, Richard William Penn Curzon-Howe, (born 1796 - died 1870) (made Earl of Howe that year) gaining the bulk of the real estate. (SPECIAL NOTE: Richard William was the son of the Honorable Penn Assheton Curzon, (born? - died 1797).

Many thousands of pounds were spent honestly, and perhaps as much more dishonestly, proving relationship. The trouble was over his paternity, whether he was a son of John Jennens or Robert Jennens.

However, that did not stop the lawsuits, which came first from British and Irish claimants, then, beginning in 1849, from America. At least seventeen cases were before the court-three distinct claims by the Martin family; five distinct claims by Elizabeth Jennings family; two distinct claims by Henry Jennings family; three distinct claims by Edward Jennings family; four distinct claims by Joseph Jennings family. At various times there were seventeen legal proceedings in operation, the last being filed (and thrown out of court) in 1934 on behalf of a group of American claimants. According to one account, the Bank of England had to employ seven clerks just to handle correspondence related to the claims, in spite of the fact that there was almost nothing left to fight over.

SPECIAL NOTE: The “Great Jennens Case” became a symbol of such legal dissipation and frivolity, that it is said that it was from these vexatious and long pending suits that Charles Dickens (7 Feb 1812 – 9 Jun 1870) derived his idea for the “Jarndyce and Jarndyce” case in his 1852 novel "Bleak House", which has been made into movies and TV mini-series.

[6 Sep 2012 – As frequently happens while doing Family Research, my thoughts pause and ponder the 'doings of the folks' that came before me. So much will NEVER be known about their lives -- births and deaths, marriages and children, loves and hate, successes and failures, triumphs and challenges—just so much is LOST.]

INTRODUCTION

I have so MANY questions that will NEVER be answered about my Family!!

WHERE did I come from?

WHO were my forebears?

WHERE did my forebears live? WHY did they relocate?

WHO are these people in the Family photos, drawings, paintings, and documents?

YOUR LIFETIME AND YOUR PASSAGE

We all come here as newborn children of our parents, each a unique creation from God’s own hands, our births celebrated by Heavenly Angels and Earthly Family and Friends.

Our Passage through Time as ordinary mortals is painted with colors of love and hate, grief and joy, gain and loss, and more, with all the lessons of a Lifetime that affect one's choices on our Earthly and Moral Journey.

The unique Life Story of every individual is recorded in the people whose Lives one touches, in the memories of one that linger in others, and in the mark one leaves on the land and events.

But, I have to ask:

WHAT will your Life Story tell?

WHO follows to tell your Life Story?

HOW will your Life Story be shared (internet, ipad, iphone, DVD, blog, twitter, facebook, diary, television, movies, letters, documents, photos, mementoes, souvenirs, or ..)?

On the other hand, WILL your Life Story remain untold after death, and "The rest is silence". {Hamlet, Act V, Scene 2, by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) an English poet and playwright}

So many times as one approaches Life's Final Chapter, a clearing-out of letters, documents, photos, and the like is performed. This culling process is often painful for you or even for the person doing the process for a decedent. It is often the case, that many Pages of one's Life Story are LOST.

When my maternal Cousin Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (1830-1896), an American poet born in Amherst, Massachusetts, passed away, so many of her prose, poetry, and letters were found and saved. To this day, there are international societies, classes, tours, museums, facebook and web sites, books, and memorabilia of her Life and Time.

This LOSS, of a Family History or Story untold, unsaved, and silent, may not be apparent to the current generation(s), but can be felt keenly by the next generations that will ask the same questions that I myself ask.

That being said, consider NOW a GREAT TIME to 'turn over a new leaf this Autumn 2012.

Take a photo and add a caption (date, location, occasion, and people in photo).

Save a memento, letter, document, or whatever, and attach a description.

Fill in the pages of the Family Bible with births, marriages, deaths, and more.

For example, to record my Life's Story and my Family's Story, I use: a digital camera, a scanner and printer, Google BLOG, www.Ancestry.com for family tree posting, www.findagrave.com for cemetery and final resting place posting, and I label and caption a lot.

Use your creativity and imagination to record your Life's Story and that of your Family. DO it NOW! Make a START! Make a difference!

(1 Sep 2012 – The Summer is just a memory -- a leaf fallen upon cooler days. The harvest is "in" -- its bounty to preserve for feast, else fast. Days seen passing so quickly with the shorter sunlight hours. Time to savor the moment -- before it is Past. What answer to the question asked by Tomorrow, "How was your Yesterday?"

Below is a letter written by my maternal Cousin Emily Elizabeth Dickinson, when she was only age 15. In the letter, she weighs the balance of Time, God, worthy pursuits, and Nature's seasons. Thoughts worthy to ponder.

My Dear Friend A., ...

Does it seem as though September had come? How swiftly summer has fled, and what report has it borne to heaven of misspent time and wasted hours? Eternity only will answer. The ceaseless flight of the seasons is to me a very solemn thought; and yet why do we not strive to make a better improvement of them?

With how much emphasis the poet has said, "We take no note of time but from its loss. 'Twere wise in man to give it then a tongue. Pay no moment but in just purchase of its worth, and what its worth ask death-beds. They can tell. Part with it as with life reluctantly." Then we have higher authority than that of man for the improvement of our time. For God has said, "Work while the days last, for the night is coming in the which no man can work."

Let us strive together to part with time more reluctantly, to watch the pinions of fleeting moment until they are dim in the distance, and the new-coming moment claims our attention. I have perfect confidence in God and His promises, and yet I know not why I feel that the world holds a predominant place in my affections...

(25 Aug 2012) The distance across the generations is bridged by poetry, prose, letters, books, plays, music, paintings, Family Stories, photos, Bibles, and keepsake heirlooms. I feel honored to just receive today a very special JENNINGS FAMILY silver spoon keepsake heirloom. Let me tell you a little bit about the SILVER SPOON and the JENNINGS FAMILY whose hands have 'touched' the spoon before me!

JENNINGS FAMILY – SILVER spoon keepsake heirloom

Here is a SILVER spoon that belonged to Mary Grace Jennings Scott, which since her death has been passed down through the generations through her oldest daughter (Gladys Iona Scott Dunlap 1892-1968) and then to Gladys Iona grandson (Dennis Merlin Lynch). Mary Grace probably got the spoon (or set of spoons) from her parents Mr and Mrs Nathan Brownfield Jennings or her grandparents Mr and Mrs Henry Jennings Junior.

Gladys Iona is my BELOVED grand aunt and the older sister of younger brother Laurel Flynn Scott (1896-1979) (my maternal BELOVED grandfather) and younger brother Clarence Jennings Scott (1900-1943) [See Clarence Jennings Scott BLOG link: http://familyalbum2010.blogspot.com/2012/01/001-after-branch-comes-leaves.html ].

Gladys Iona Scott Dunlap was the first of six children born to her parents James Alfred Scott and Mary Grace Jennings Scott. Gladys was married to Forrest Earl Dunlap (1887-1959) on 6 Sep 1911 in Oklahoma, wedding ceremony performed by Frank Ellmore. Moreover, Forrest Earl Dunlap was the third child of his parents William Andrew Dunlap (1851-1919) and Rhoda Evelyn Kitchen Dunlap (1851-1918). (Forrest Earl Dunlap was the younger brother of Mary Alice Dunlap Scott. Mary Alice was the second wife of James Alfred Scot; and so, Mary Alice is my Step-first-great-grandmother.)

Aunt Gladys hand wrote a short note about the history of the spoon and passed both her note and spoon to the son (Dennis Merlin Lynch 1936-still living GOD bless him in August 2012) of her youngest daughter (Leona Gladys Dunlap Lynch 1916-still living GOD bless her in August 2012). And, Cousin Dennis has been the steward of this KEEPSAKE for many years.

Cousin Dennis (my maternal second cousin) emailed me on 3 Aug 2012, and said that he would like to 'pass on' this precious KEEPSAKE and note to someone in the Family. I currently have this wonderful SILVER SPOON keepsake heirloom in my possession.

Jennings Family Lineage

Mary Grace Jennings Scott (1872-1908) -- was the first wife of James Alfred Scott (1864-1935) and they were married on 13 May 1891 in McPherson County, Kansas, by Reverend Clark. Mary Grace died as a result of childbirth complications after the birth of her sixth child. There are photos of Mary Grace and James Alfred on my Ancestry Tree and my BLOG. [See BLOG link: http://familyalbum2010.blogspot.com/2011/09/james-alfred-scott-family.html ]. After Mary Grace died, James Alfred Scott remarried to Mary Alice Dunlap Scott (1878-1957) on 30 Dec 1908 in Oklahoma.

Mary Grace Jennings Scott -- was the first child of six children born to her parents: Nathan Brownfield Jennings (1845-1932) and Elizabeth Jane Findley Jennings (1847-1913) married on 18 Apr 1871 in Grimes, Cerro Gordo, Iowa.

Nathan Brownfield -- was the third child of twelve children born to his parents: Henry Jennings Junior (1806-1890) and Catharine Brownfield Jennings (1816-1894) married on 4 Mar 1840 in Smithfield, Bradford, Pennsylvania.

Henry Jennings Junior -- was the sixth of eight children born to his parents: Henry Jennings Senior (1765-1827) and Rhoda Leslie Jennings (1769-1852) married on 25 Mar 1790 probably in Pennsylvania since their first child was born in Pennsylvania.

Henry Jennings Senior -- was the second of six children born to his parents: Zebulon Jennings Junior (1735-1776) and Joanna Littell {alternate spellings Lyttle Little) Jennings (1746-1780) married on 17 Jun 1762 in a Presbyterian Church in Westfield, Union County, New Jersey.

Zebulon Jennings Junior -- was the son of Zebulon Jennings Senior (1709 NJ – 1777 NJ) and Sarah Jennings (1724-1770) married about 1730 in a Presbyterian Church in Westfield, Union County, New Jersey.

Zebulon Jennings Senior -- was the third of seven sons of Benjamin Jennings (1675- ?) and Sarah Jennings (1710-1770).

SPECIAL FAMILY CONNECTION NOTE:

Both of my First Great Grandmothers were farmers wives, lived near each other in Rosedale, Oklahoma, and went to the same Church of Christ that their spouses built. Their children (Laurel Flynn Scott 1896-1979, son of Mary Grace and James Alfred Scott) and (Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bennett Scott 1897-1980, daughter of Minerva Frances and James Jones Bennett) married and were my maternal Grandparents. My mother Dorothy Helen Scott Tarr 1923-1982, was the third of seven children born to Laurel Flynn Scott and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bennett Scott.

SPECIAL FAMILY CONNECTION NOTE:

Lieutenant Henry Adams II (about 1604-1676), {one of the sons of Henry Adams I and Edith Squire Adams} on 17 Nov 1643 in Braintree, Massachusetts, married my maternal-eighth-great-grand-Aunt Elizabeth Payne Adams (alternate spelling for "Payne" is "Paine") (1620-1676) and settled in Medfield, Massachusetts. Moreover, Lieutenant Henry Adams II and Aunt Elizabeth Payne Adams were also the maternal-fifth-Great-Grandparents of Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (10 Dec 1830 – 15 May 1886) {Emily is my maternal DNA Cousin and a much remembered and honored female American poet}. Aunt Elizabeth Payne Adams' older brother was John Payne (1615-1690), my maternal-eighth-great-grandfather. The father of the siblings John Payne and Elizabeth Payne Adams -- was ENSIGN Moses Payne Esquire (1581-1643), my maternal-ninth-great-grandfather and Emily Elizabeth Dickinson's maternal-sixth-great-grandfather. WHEW! The leaves on our FAMILY TREE are full of surprises!

Second Generation in America

Son of Henry Adams I and Edith Squire Adams: Captain Joseph Adams Senior (1626-1691) married Abigail Baxter Adams of Boston in 1650.

Third Generation in America

Son of Joseph Adams Senior and Abigail Baxter Adams: Joseph Adams Junior (1654-1705), was married three times. His first wife, Mary Chapin Adams, died in 1687; the following year he married Hannah Bass Adams (1662-1705), the daughter of John Bass and Ruth Alden Bass. [SPECIAL NOTE: Through Ruth Alden Bass, the Adams' were descended from Mayflower Pilgrims John and Priscilla Alden.]

Joseph Adams Junior's third wife, after the death of Hannah Bass Adams, was Elizabeth Hobart Adams.

Fourth Generation in America

Son of Joseph Adams Junior and Hannah Bass Adams: John Adams Senior (born 1691– died 1761) who married Susanna Boylston Adams.

Fifth Generation in America

Son of John Adams Senior and Susanna Boylston Adams: President John Adams Junior the SECOND PRESIDENT of the United States of America (born 1735– died 1826) who married his third cousin Abigail Smith Adams Senior.

Sixth Generation in America

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Here you have a Short Family Story of my BELOVED Maternal Family Branch. This story began before they were born and continues after their passing, with their descendants and the many lives and hearts that they "touched".

However, this is not the beginning for there are other family members that traveled this path before, and this is not the end for new generations are yet to come. This is just a short story for those family members that are interested in OUR FAMILY STORY and HISTORY.

I feel very honored to be a part of this FAMILY TREE.

USA President #2 -- John Adams Junior (term of office 1797-1801) born 30 Oct 1735 in Braintree, Massachusetts [now called Quincy, Massachusetts], died at age 90 on 4 Jul 1826 in Quincy, Massachusetts.

On 25 Oct 1764 at Weymouth, Massachusetts, John Adams Junior married his third cousin Abigail Smith Adams Senior (born 1744 - died 1818), the daughter of Reverend William Smith, a Congregational minister.

The children of President John Adams Junior and Abigail Smith Adams Senior were: (NOTE: Abigail gave birth to six children, of which four grew to adulthood.)

Abigail "Nabby" Adams (1765-1813), who married William Stephens Smith and had four children: William Steuben Smith, John Adams Smith, Thomas Hollis Smith, and Caroline Amelia Smith.

John Quincy Adams Senior (1767-1848), who became the SIXTH PRESIDENT of the United States of America.

USA President John Adams Junior was raised a Congregationalist, since his ancestors were puritans. According to his biographer David McCullough, "as his family and friends knew, Adams was both a devout Christian, and an independent thinker". In a letter to Benjamin Rush, President John Adams Junior credited religion with the success of his ancestors after their migration to the New World in the 1630s; see below Henry Adams I (1583-1646).

Historian Joseph Ellis has found that the twelve hundred letters between President John Adams Junior and Abigail "constituted a treasure trove of unexpected intimacy and candor, more revealing than any other correspondence between a prominent American husband and wife in American history." Ellis (2011) says that Abigail, although self-educated, was a better and more colorful letter-writer than President John Adams Junior, even though he was one of the best letter-writers of the age. Ellis argues that Abigail was the more resilient and more emotionally balanced of the two, and calls her one of the most extraordinary women in American history.

On July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, President John Adams Junior died at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts. Told that it was the Fourth of July, he answered clearly, "It is a great day. It is a good day." His last words have been reported as "Thomas Jefferson survives" (Jefferson himself, however, had died hours before he did). President John Adams Junior's death left Charles Carroll of Carrollton as the last surviving signatory of the Declaration of Independence. President John Adams Junior died while his son President John Quincy Adams Senior was president.

His crypt lies at United First Parish Church (also known as the Church of the Presidents) in Quincy, Massachusetts. Originally, President John Quincy Adams Senior was buried in Hancock Cemetery, across the road from the United First Parish Church. Until his record was broken by Ronald Reagan in 2001, President John Quincy Adams Senior was the nation's longest-living President (90 years, 247 days) maintaining that record for 175 years.

Abigail Smith Adams Senior was an advocate of married women's property rights and more opportunities for women, particularly in the field of education. Women, she believed, should not submit to laws not made in their interest, nor should they be content with the simple role of being companions to their husbands. They should educate themselves and thus be recognized for their intellectual capabilities, so they could guide and influence the lives of their children and husbands.

Abigail Smith Adams Senior, as well as her husband President John Quincy Adams Senior, was an active member of First Parish Church in Quincy, which became Unitarian in doctrine by 1753. Like her husband President John Quincy Adams Senior, her theological views evolved over the course of her life.

Abigail Smith Adams Senior counted among her ancestors the leaders of the Congregationalist Church in the Massachusetts Colony and the prominent Quincy Family. Through the latter, she was a descendant of the House of Beaufort, an illegitimate branch of the English House of Plantagenet, making her a distant cousin to King George III, who was King of the United Kingdom during the American Revolution.

Abigail Smith Adams Senior is the daughter of Reverend William Smith and his wife Elizabeth Quincy Smith. Abigail was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, in 1744, where her father was a Congregationalist Minister. Abigail's mother, Elizabeth Quincy, was born in 1721 in Braintree, Massachusetts, the daughter of John Quincy and Elizabeth Norton. John Quincy was Speaker of the Massachusetts Assembly and part of the Governor's council.

JUST A PERSONAL NOTE HERE: I was married to my spouse Dale Russell Jones Shoudy in the Congregational Church in Belmont, California on 30 Nov 1963. Dale and I were divorced on 19 Jan 1979 in San Jose, California.

Abigail Smith Adams Senior died on October 28, 1818, of typhoid fever. She is buried beside her husband President John Quincy Adams Senior in a crypt located in the United First Parish Church (also known as the Church of the Presidents) in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was 73 years old, exactly two weeks shy of her 74th birthday. Her last words were, "Do not grieve, my friend, my dearest friend. I am ready to go. And John, it will not be long."

The parents of President John Adams Junior are John Adams Senior (born 1691– died 1761) and Susanna Boylston Adams. While President John Adams Junior did not speak much of his mother later in life, he commonly praised his father and was very close to him as a child. President John Adams Junior's birthplace is now part of Adams National Historical Park.

John Adams Senior was a farmer, a cobbler, a Congregationalist (that is, Puritan) deacon in his church, a lieutenant in the militia and a selectman, or town councilman, who supervised schools and roads. He was often referred to as "Deacon John," reflecting his religious role and differentiating him from his son President John Adams Junior. John Adams Senior's wife Susanna Boylston Adams was a descendant of the Boylstons of Brookline.

John Adams Senior (1691-1761), was the second-great-grandson of Henry Adams I (1583-1646), who emigrated from Braintree, Essex, England to Massachusetts about 1640. Henry Adams I was born in 1583 in Barton, St. David, Somersetshire, England. He died on Saturday, 6 Oct 1646 at Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts Colony, at age 63 years, 8 months and 15 days and is buried in the Hancock Cemetery, Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. His grave marker is inscribed: "HERE LYETH THE BODY OF HENRY ADAMS FOUNDER OF THE BRAINTREE BRANCH OF THE ADAMS FAMILY IN AMERICA BURIED IN THIS CEMETERY OCT. 8, 1846". Henry Adams Senior's Will was proved (called probated today) 8 Jun 1647. Henry Adams Senior emigrated from Somerset in England to Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1633 with his wife, sons, and a daughter Ursula Adams. The Colonial authorities at Boston allotted to Henry Adams Senior 40 acres of land at Mount Wollaston, Massachusetts, which was incorporated in 1640 as Braintree Township, Massachusetts, for the ten persons in his family, 24 Feb 1639-40. This land included what are now Quincy, Braintree, and Randolph, in Massachusetts.

Henry Adams I was the youngest son of four children of John Adams (1555-1604), also of Barton, St. David, Somersetshire, England, and Agnes Stone Adams (about 1556 – 1615). Henry Adams I married Edith Squire, daughter of Henry Squire. Their children: Lieutenant Henry Adams II (1604-1676), Lieutenant Thomas Adams (1612-1688), Deacon Jonathan Adams (1614-1690), Captain Samuel Adams (1616-1688), Ursula Adams Streeter Hosier Robinson Crafts (1619-1679), Peter Adams (1622-1690), John Adams (1622-1706), Joseph Adams Senior (1626-1694), and Ensign Edward Adams (1629-1716).

Henry Adams I and all his known ancestors were Yeomen famers from Barton St. David, Somersetshire, England. Henry Adams I was also a maltster {a person who makes or deals in malt}.

Henry Adams I with his large family seems to have preferred settling near the coast and thus settled at Mount Wollaston, Massachusetts Colony (later called Braintree and now called Quincy, Massachusetts), and became a farmer. Henry Adams I's biographers do not associate him with the more radical and religious Puritans, nor with the liberal and outlawed Pilgrims, but rather see him and other followers of Reverend John White as adventurers, seeking a new world where the boundaries of a class society could be overcome.

Henry Adams I's emigration to America was probably brought about through his wife Edith Squire Adams' connection with Aquila Purchase and Thomas Purchase, two of the leading parishioners and associates of Reverend John White, Rector of Holy Trinity, Dorchester, organizer in 1623 of the "Dorchester Adventurers", and a great advocate for the colonization of New England. Aquila Purchase was Master of Trinity School in Dorchester, Dorset, England; emigrant to New England {USA}; and married on 28 Jan 1614 to Ann Squire {sister of Edith Squire, who married Henry Adams I}.

Henry Adams I was also the paternal-second-great-grandfather of Samuel Adams Junior (born 27 Sep 1722 – died 2 Oct 1803), the great patriot, orator, statesman, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, political philosopher, one of the architects of the principles of American Republicanism, and signer in 1776 of the Declaration of Independence; and Samuel Adams Junior was second cousin to President John Adams Junior (the second PRESIDENT of the USA). And, Joseph Adams Senior (1625-1694) and his wife Abigail Baxter (1634-1692) were the paternal grandparents of Samuel Adams Junior.

There is a granite column erected to Henry Adam Senior's memory by President John Adams Junior, his great-great-grandson, with the following inscription:

"In Memory of HENRY ADAMS Who took his flight from the Dragon persecution in Devonshire in England, and alighted with eight sons, near Mount Wollaston. One of the sons returned to England, and after taking time to explore the country, four removed to Medfield and the neighboring towns. Two to Chelmsford. One only, Joseph, who lies here at his left hand, remained here, who was an Original Proprietor in the Township of Braintree, incorporated in 1639. This stone and several others have been placed in this yard, by a great-great grandson, from a veneration of the piety, humility, simplicity, prudence, patience, temperance, frugality, industry and perseverance, of his Ancestors, in hopes of recommending an imitation of their virtues to their posterity." ... Erected December 1823.

USA President #6 -- President John Quincy Adams Senior (term of office 1825-1829), born on 11 Jul 1767 in Braintree, Massachusetts, died 23 Feb 1848 and buried at the First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts {son of USA President #2 John Adams Junior and Abigail Smith Adams). President John Adams Junior is now part of Adams National Historical Park and open to the public. John Quincy Adams Senior was named for his mother's maternal grandfather, Colonel John Quincy, after whom Quincy, Massachusetts, is named.

John Quincy Adams Senior married Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams SR (born 12 Feb 1775 London, England – died at age 77 on 15 May 1852 in Washington, D. C.), the daughter of an American merchant, in a ceremony at the church of All Hallows-by-the-Tower, London, England.

Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams SR was sickly, plagued by migraine headaches and frequent fainting spells. [JUST A PERSONAL NOTE HERE: I have also been plagued by migraine headaches, as were my maternal Grandfather Laurel Flynn Scott, and my Aunt "Nette" Scott, daughter of Laurel Flynn Scott.] Louisa Catherine had several miscarriages over the course of their marriage. President John Adams Senior and Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams SR had the following children:

John Quincy Adams JR (1803–1834), presidential aide.
Charles Francis Adams (1807–1886), diplomat, public official, and author
Louisa Catherine Adams JR (1811–1812)

President John Adams Senior remains the only president to have a First Lady born outside of the United States. Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams SR was First Lady of the United States from 1825 to 1829. President John Adams Senior and his father President John Adams Junior, were the FIRST FATHER AND SON Presidents of the United States of America.

On 21 Feb 1848, the House of Representatives was discussing the matter of honoring US Army officers who served in the Mexican–American War. John Quincy Adams Senior firmly opposed this idea, so when the rest of the house erupted into 'ayes', he cried out, 'No!' John Quincy Adams Senior rose to answer a question put forth by the Speaker of the House. Immediately thereafter, Adams collapsed, having suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Two days later, on February 23, John Quincy Adams Senior died with his wife and son at his side in the Speaker's Room inside the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. His last words were "This is the last of earth. I am content." John Quincy Adams Senior passed away at 7:20 P.M on 23 Feb 1848.

President John Quincy Adams Senior and First Lady Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams SR are entombed, as well as John Quincy Adams Senior's parents President John Adams Junior and First Lady Abigail Adams SR, in the United First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts (also known as the Church of the Presidents). President John Quincy Adams Senior s original interment was temporary, in the public vault at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Later, he was interred in the family burial ground in Quincy across from the First Parish Church, called Hancock Cemetery. After President John Quincy Adams Senior wife's death, his son, Charles Francis Adams, had him reinterred with his wife in the expanded family crypt in the United First Parish Church across the street, next to his parents. Both tombs are viewable by the public. President John Quincy Adams Senior's original tomb at Hancock Cemetery is still there and marked simply "J.Q. Adams".

SPECIAL NOTE: In 1779, President John Quincy Adams Senior began a diary that he kept until just before he died in 1848. The massive fifty volumes are one of the most extensive collections of first-hand information from the period of the early republic, and are widely cited by modern historians.

REMEMBERED NOTE: President John Quincy Adams Senior occasionally is featured in the mass media. In the PBS miniseries The Adams Chronicles (1976), he was portrayed by David Birney, William Daniels, Marcel Trenchard, Stephen Austin, Steven Grover, and Mark Winkworth. He was also portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the 1997 film Amistad, and again by Ebon Moss-Bachrach in the 2008 HBO television miniseries John Adams; the HBO series received criticism for needless historical and temporal distortions in its portrayal.

The images in my head are of memories – liken to distant dreams – that sadden my Heart, mute my voice, and dampen my cheeks.

Soft voices murmur whispers of remembered times spent with those loved – yet lost in the Past.

Those precious few memories reside now in the cemetery of my Heart.

My Life's Journey has become a Story of woe and sorrow.

Each Day is a wake – a funeral – celebrating the hallowed Past.

The Present offers only numbness and regret – A Mourning of those loved and lost.

TREASURES of the Heart!

A rare amaryllis native of Brazil called Hippeastrum papilio (The Butterfly Lily). It looks like a mauve tiger in color -- very unusual. Aunt "Nette" Jeannette Scott (grand daughter of James Alfred Scott and Mary Grace Jennings Scott) gifted me this beautiful plant on Thanksgiving 2011. She said, "My son, Rick, gave it to me some years ago and it has been a hardy one."

A spectacular houseplant or patio potted plant with exotically shaped flowers of greens and purples—often featured as the highlight cover special in national mail order catalogs. I have it in a pot on my covered patio where it gets plenty of sun, but is sheltered from wind, rain, and frost.

LOVE YOU, Aunt Nette, you are the BEST!

My Paternal Family History

(6 Feb 2012 – My Family Tree has many branches and many leaves. Below is a brief history of my paternal grandparents.

LOVE MY FAMILY! Dorothy Hazel Tarr)

My paternal third Great Grandparents--

In 1850 my paternal third Great Grandfather Jesse Rueben Cotton (1785 Harrison County, Kentucky – 1862 Clay County, Kentucky) was a farmer and head of a large household with his wife Jane Griffin Cotton (1792 Virginia, which was later renamed Kentucky – 1873 Clay County, Kentucky). On the 1850 US Federal Census, the Family's Ethnicity was recorded as: Mulatto (freed slave).

In 1850, Jesse owned his own land and farm in Clay County, Kentucky, which was valued then at $400. Jesse could both read and write, but Jane could not. Jesse and Jane married about 1810 in Manchester, Clay County, Kentucky and had 15 children. Jesse was seven years older than his wife Jane, and died eleven years before her death.

The Jesse Rueben Cotton extended Family lived in the same place in Clay County, Kentucky, from about 1830 – 1880s. The extended family grew and prospered, and in 1860, owned combined land valued then at over $2,000 with combined personal property valued then at over $500. The Cotton Family stayed with the land and their sons and daughters lived together in the same residence or next door to each other from about 1830s to about 1880s. (Just a historical note: The American Civil War occurred 1861-1865. And, The Jesse Reuben Cotton family were listed as freed slaves in the 1850 Census – before the War.)

Many of the neighboring farms and residents were also freed slaves and faced challenges only we know today by reading about them in Library Archives or Family Diaries. Through the years, the family married interracially blending in Native American and other ethnicity and cultures.

My paternal second Great Grandparents--

I am a direct descendant of Jesse and Jane's sixth child, Martha Ann Cotton Collins (my paternal Second Great Grandmother). On 24 Jul 839, Martha Ann (1817 Clay County, KY – 1898 Clay County, KY) married James Collins (1814 Tennessee – 1885 Clay County, KY). Martha and James had 15 children, and their tenth child was Morgan Daniel Collins (1854 KY – 1934 OK).

My paternal first Great Grandparents--

On 19 May 1880, Morgan Daniel Collins (my paternal first Great Grandfather) married Sarah Jane Day Collins (1866 KY – 1947 OK) and they had nine children. My BELOVED paternal grandmother Emma Sarah Collins Eslick Tarr Radar (1898-1980) was their seventh child. Emma Sarah is my father's mother; my father James Thomas Tarr is still living (as of today) at age 92 in Fresno, Calfiornia. Love you Gram Emma and miss you every day!.

Uncle Donald and Aunt Fay traveled around the many areas where the Family lived, and took lots of photos and even visited some living descendants. Uncle Donald shares my interest in our Family History and Stories and has written many poems highlighting our Family Doings.

In 1912, this Christian Bible was given to Sarah Jane Day Collins by her daughter Emma Sarah Collins (my Paternal Grandmother). However, the Bible was destroyed in a rainstorm in 1947 in Seminole, Oklahoma, and only this cover page and a few other pages remain.

Introduction

This is OUR FAMILY and OUR HISTORY. It has been an emotional journey of discovery for me while learning about the origins of the FAMILY. Here you have a brief history of CLARENCE JENNINGS SCOTT and his parents, siblings, spouse, and children. This story began before CLARENCE was born and continues after his passing, with his descendants and the many lives and hearts that he "touched".

Brief History

On 14 Aug 1900, CLARENCE JENNINGS SCOTT was born in Oklahoma, USA. He was the fourth child of the six children born to his parents. His parents were James Alfred Scott (born 4 Dec 1864 in Ontario, Canada - died on 29 Jul 1935 Delano, Kern, California) and Mary Grace Jennings Scott (born 13 Jun 1872 Iowa - died age 36 on 12 Mar 1908 Manchester County, Oklahoma) and were married 13 May 1891 McPherson County, Kansas. James Alfred Scott's parents were Jobe W Scott (born 22 Sep 1817 Ontario, Canada - died 8 Dec 1893 USA, probably Kansas; died age 70) and Rebecca Scott (maiden name was Scott) (born 5 Feb 1820 Canada – died 1889 USA probably Kansas). Mary Grace Jennings Scott's parents were Nathan Brownfield Jennings (1845-1932) and Elizabeth Jane Findley Jennings (1847-1913). Then on 12 Mar 1908, at age 36, Mary Grace passed away from hemorrhaging and complications after the birth of her sixth child. James Alfred Scott married again on 30 Dec 1908, in Oklahoma, to his second wife Mary Alice Dunlap Scott (born Feb 1878 Illinois - died 6 Dec 1957 California). Her parents were William Andrew Dunlap Junior (1851-1919) and Rhoda Evelyn Kitchen Dunlap (1851-1918). In 1909, a son was born to James Alfred Scott and his second spouse Mary Alice Dunlap Scott. James William Dunlap Scott (born 19 Nov 1909 Manchester County, Oklahoma - died 6 Apr 1979 Delano, Kern, California) was given Mary Alice's maiden name for his middle name. He was called "Dunlap" by family and friends, and went by the name of J.W. Dunlap Scott, and was the younger half-brother-sibling to CLARENCE. On 12 Sep 1918, CLARENCE JENNINGS SCOTT was age 18, single, and working on the family farm in Manchester, Oklahoma, and living with his parents, when he registered for World War I Draft in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma. Per the 1920 US Census, CLARENCE was age 20, single, and living as a boarder with his older brother Raymond Cyril Scott (1894-1961) and his brother's wife Dora Burnett Scott (1901-1979) in Lomita, Los Angeles, CA. On 10 Nov 1928, CLARENCE JENNINGS SCOTT was married to Mary Genevieve Geneve Shackelford Scott (born 28 Mar 1901 California – died 6 Nov 1983 Bakersfield, California). They had three children: Donald Eugene Scott Senior (born 8 Feb 1931 Kern County, CA – died 15 May 1993 Bakersfield, CA); Marcia Gaylene Scott (b 1 Jun 1933 Kern County, CA); and Jacqueline Louise Scott Dirkes (born 12 Jul 1933 in Los Angeles - died 17 Feb 1990 in San Luis Obispo, CA). Mary Genevieve Geneve was the daughter of Walter Clarence Shackelford (1881-1964) and Mary LaVerne Rodgers "Mollie" Evans Shackelford (1885-1967). On 20 Jul 1943, CLARENCE JENNINGS SCOTT passed away in Solano, California. My maternal Aunt "Nette" Jeannette Scott Wilmoth Alvarez said that CLARENCE passed away after being in an accident where he worked in California. Aunt "Nette" said, "UNCLE CLARENCE was killed at a defense plant up near San Jose, California, I think. He went outside to get something and a big tripod of timber fell on him."

Lineage Notes

CLARENCE was the younger brother of Laurel Flynn Scott. Laurel was the father of my maternal Aunt "Nette" Jeannette Scott Wilmoth Alvarez and my mother Dorothy Helen Scott-Tarr. Gladys Iona Scott Dunlap (1892-1968), oldest child of James Alfred Scott and Mary Grace Jennings Scott), was the older sister of CLARENCE and Laurel Flynn Scott (1896-1979). Three young guys "HORSING" around (the mule "OLD BOB" is just doing his business and eating and munching away!! THE SCOTT Family always named their mule(s) "OLD BOB" through the years!!!! This photo (which is over 90 years old) contains at my best guess according to what is written on the back: CLARENCE JENNINGS SCOTT (about age 14) and brother Zara Harold Scott (1904-1956, about age 10). (NOTE: The other two young guys may be: James Slacks (about age 14) and Franklin S Bennett (1899-1979, about age 15, younger brother to my Maternal Gram Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bennett Scott). CLARENCE and Zara are the sons of James Alfred Scott and the younger brothers my Maternal-Grandfather Laurel Flynn Scott's (so CLARENCE and Zara are my Maternal-Grand-Uncles). She passed away in 1957; albeit I was born in 1946 before she passed away, I do not have any photos of myself with her -- if there were any taken of us together that is. Mary Alice Dunlap Scott (Feb 1878 Parson, Adams, Illinois – Dec 1957 Delano, Kern, California) was many things to many people:

· the daughter of William Andrew Dunlap Junior (1851-1919) and Rhoda Evelyn Kitchen Dunlap (1851-1918);

· the granddaughter of Mary Wright Dunlap McKenzie (1832-1928) and Ephraim Dunlap (1815-1856, Mary Wright's first spouse); and step-granddaughter of Hugh Hamilton McKenzie Senior (1824-1911, Mary Wright's second spouse);

· the grand niece of Elizabeth Wright Hupert (1836-1925, younger sister of Mary Wright Dunlap McKenzie);

· the older sister of Edith May Dunlap Taylor (1882-1950);

· the older sister of Forrest Earle Dunlap (1887-1959);

· the sister-in-law and step-mother of Forrest Earle Dunlap's wife Gladys Iona Scott Dunlap (1892-1968);

· the second wife and widow of James Alfred Scott (1864-1935), married 30 Dec 1908 Oklahoma;

· the step-mother to the six children of James Alfred Scott and James Alfred's deceased first wife Mary Grace Jennings Scott (Jun 1872 - Mar 1908), including --

Mary Alice Dunlap Scott was born into the DUNLAP Family that were pioneers in the Payson, Adams, Illinois area. Her parents moved to Harper County, Kansas, when she was age 2 and moved again to Stella Township, Woods, Oklahoma about 1900. On 30 Dec 1908, Mary Alice Dunlap married James Alfred Scott in Oklahoma, and took over the role of "farmer's wife" and "step-mother to six children". Mary Alice and James Alfred had one child from their union – James William Dunlap Scott (named James after James Alfred Scott, William Dunlap after Mary's Dad William Andrew Dunlap Junior). Mary Alice and James Alfred lived in Oklahoma on their farm after their marriage, then moved to California about 1920. Mary Alice and James Alfred settled by 1930 in Delano, Kern, California, and are both buried there.

Introduction

It is always interesting to me to research my Family and the origin and meanings of our Family names. Below is what I have found so far regarding my surname "TARR".

This unusual name seems to have originated in the Bristol area of South West England, which explains the use of the word as an occupational surname for one who worked with tar or bitumen in waterproofing ships, Bristol having been an important trading port for centuries. The derivation of "tar" is from the Old English "te(o)rn". The parish records of West Bagborough in Somerset show the marriage of one Elizabeth Tarr to Henry Thrasher on the 23rd of April 1639. Sara Tarr was christened on the 14th June 1667, at Chipstable, Somerset. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Francis Tarr, married Ann Day, which was dated 1584, Stockland, Bristol, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1, 'Good Queen Bess', 1558 - 1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

So this is what I've found so far: That my family origins using the surname TARR came from mostly the United Kingdom area and were living near towers in the Middle Ages and were probably working in the shipbuilding trades.

Enough is enough – I've had enough. It's time to move on and let the past fall away with all the hatred. The only way it seems to let it "go", is to let you "go" too. Therefore, I release you from this day from any familial connection to me. dht)

I remember you, little Sister, as a little girl, but now I feel that we are strangers with little to nothing in common - but our DNA. I know I won't hurt your feelings as I say this with complete honesty – you have forfeited your 'sisterhood' and 'familial ties' !! Dredging up the past only brings painful memories back, and when I see your photos, hear your voice (so like my own), I'm reminded of how deep your betrayal in ALL THINGS!!

SOUP – Chicken Tortilla

(17 DEC 2011 - This is one of my favorite homemade soups. It is very healthy, especially if you use olive oil and low-fat or non-fat milk. The soup is a warm red color and looks delicious with side garnishes of cilantro, chives, green onions, diced fresh tomatoes, and some shredded low-fat cheddar cheese, sour cream, diced bell pepper, or even guacamole. I like this soup with sour dough bread, but bread sticks or even crackers are great too. I make it a MEAL by serving a great garden salad and chilled green tea — but that's just me! Also, I like to add my own dash of TABASCO Green Pepper Sauce or Original Sauce to my individual serving, so I can "spice it up" – but mildly!!! dht)

Makes about 4 quarts of soup – that's a LOT, so I freeze the soup in small portions (about 2 cups). It freezes GREAT!

So here are the ingredients:

1 T Olive Oil

(Olive Oil is best for taste and healthy

too; but you can use canola oil)

2 medium onions

(yellow or white, cut in thin strips)

1 T chopped garlic

(fresh or bottled; or 1 tsp dried)

2 pounds cooked boneless chicken

(cut in thin strips; I prefer white chicken

for this recipe that has been baked or

broiled)

1 tsp salt (or salt substitute)

1 tsp ground black pepper

1 quart chicken stock

(or use water; I prefer using my own

homemade chicken stock or chicken

stock from grocery store)

6 cups Enchilada Sauce (see below)

1 quart water

1 quart cream

(half-and-half, low fat milk, or

non-fat milk; you decide what you

prefer; or you can even use

canned milk)

10 corn tortillas

(cut in one-inch squares; I prefer the

tortillas that are made without LARD)

NOW the mixing and cooking steps.

Sauté the olive oil, onions, garlic, chicken, salt, and pepper on medium heat in a large saucepan, until the onions are soft and the garlic (if you used fresh) is golden.

Simmer chicken stock, Enchilada Sauce (see below), water, cream (or milk), and tortillas together until tortillas are soft. Stir by hand or take the pan off the heat and use an electric hand mixer to blend.

Then combine ALL INGREDIENTS and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Serve HOT or WARM – delicious!

OKAY, so here is the homemade Enchilada Sauce for this SOUP (or you can use this sauce for homemade ENCHILADAs – YUMMY!!)

HOME MADE ENCHILADA SAUCE

2 T olive oil (or canola oil is good too)

1 T minced fresh garlic (or bottled)

1 T minced fresh yellow or white onion

1 tsp cumin dry spice

1 T chili powder

(I prefer 2 T just because

I like chili flavoring)

1 tsp oregano (dried is okay)

6 diced red ripe tomatoes

(I prefer the fresh Roma tomatoes;

but canned diced tomatoes are okay

to use too)

1 red bell pepper

(or you can use the orange or

yellow bell pepper)

3 cups water

½ tsp salt

½ tsp ground black pepper

To make the Enchilada Sauce.

Sauté the Enchilada Sauce ingredients together in large sauce pan over medium heat. Then add the 3 cups of water and season with salt and pepper to taste. Then let cool for 5-10 minutes. And then pour into a blender to puree until smooth -- (I prefer it a little lumpy so I can see the lumps of tomatoes – but that's just me).

INVISIBLE HANDS

As I walk in the twilight of my Life, it seems as though the past somehow reaches out to me – holding me captive in time – with Invisible Hands.
