Actress Charlize Theron

2014-07-14T02:03:00.000-07:00

Charlize Theron was born on August 7, 1975 in Benoni, South Africa.

She’s an only child.

Though she’s (obviously) fluent in English, her first language is actually Afrikaans.

Her name isn’t pronounced “There-on.” The correct pronunciation in South Africa is “Thrown.” She changed it when she moved to the US, partially because she was told that it sounded more American and partially because “There-on” is how everyone here pronounced it anyway.

She grew up on a farm outside of Johannesburg.

She’s got something of a dark past: Her mother shot and killed her father in 1991 after her father, who suffered from alcoholism, attacked her mother while drunk. The shooting was ruled to be in self-defense, so Charlize’s mother faced no charges.

Not unlike many actresses, Charlize originally set out to be a ballet dancer. She began taking lessons at the age of four from a teacher who previously taught at the Royal Academy of Ballet in London.

That teacher was also responsible for teaching her English. Until she started taking lessons, Charlize only spoke Afrikaans.

At 16, Charlize took a brief detour into modeling (and no wonder—she’s stunning!). She travelled to Milan, Italy on a one-year modeling contract after winning a contest at home, but she’s said that modeling was only ever a way for her to pay for what she loved to do: dance.

After her year was up, she headed to New York to model for a couple of days, but decided to stay in the city once the modeling gig was up. While there, she trained at the Joffrey Ballet School…

There’s a funny story behind how she landed her first agent: When she first moved to L.A., she went to a bank on Hollywood Boulevard to cash a check her mother sent her to help out with her rent. The teller refused to cash it; but Charlize wasn’t having any of that and “went nuts” on the teller. Talent agent John Crosby happened to be in line behind her, and when he saw her go to town with the teller, he handed her his business card.

However, she eventually ended up firing Crosby; he kept sending scripts for movies similar to Species and Showgirls, which didn’t exactly float her metaphorical boat.

Charlize’s first role was a non-speaking part in Children of the Corn III, the 1995 direct-to-video installment of the Children of the Corn horror movie franchise. Hey, everyone’s gotta start somewhere!

Here’s a movie you may have forgotten Charlize was in: That Thing You Do! Remember Guy Patterson’s (Tom Everett Scott) ice queen girlfriend, Tina? That was her! That, by the way, was the event that made her think she could actually make a go at acting for a living: The moment Tom Hanks cast her. She remembered, “I used to watch Tom Hanks’ films over and over again when I was a kid, because I had such a big crush on him. I thought: ‘If he thinks I am worth hiring, then maybe I’m going to be okay.’”

Her big break came in 1997, when she starred opposite Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino in The Devil’s Advocate. She’s been working pretty much non-stop ever since.

But you probably saw this coming: An injury she suffered at 19 shut down her ballet career for good. About the experience, she said, “I went to New York for three days to model, and then I spent a winter in New York in a friend’s windowless basement apartment. I was broke, I was taking class at the Joffrey Ballet, and my knees gave out. I realized I couldn’t dance anymore, and I went into a major depression. My mom came over from South Africa and said, ‘Either you figure out what to do next or you come home, because you can sulk in South Africa.’”

As you may have noticed, she decided not to sulk and moved to Los Angeles instead, intending to break into the film industry.

The following year, Witherspoon appeared in Election, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Early in Life Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon was the second child born to John, a military surgeon specialising in ear, nose and throat operations, and Betty Reese, a registered nurse.

For the first four years of her life, Witherspoon lived in Germany due to her father’s military posting there before the whole family eventually returned to the United States to settle in Nashville, Tennessee.

Like many of her fellow Hollywood co-stars, Witherspoon began modelling at a mere seven-years-old. This led to television commercial roles before she landed her first significant acting part in ‘The Man in the Moon’ in 1990 as a 14-year-old tomboy. Roles in the films ‘Jack The Bear’ (1993) and Disney’s ‘A Far Off Place’ (1993) followed.

College After graduating from a private all girl’s school in 1994, Witherspoon decided to halt her acting career temporarily to attend Stanford University. Her intentions were short lived though as after just a year of studying, Witherspoon left to continue with her true ambitions on the acting path.

Carreer Taking the lead role of Wendy Pfister in the 1994 film, ‘SFW’, Witherspoon’s real break came when she starred alongside brat pack favourite, Kiefer Sutherland and Brooke Shields in the thriller ‘Freeway’ (1996). The same year she also starred with Mark Wahlberg in the film ‘Fear’.

1998 was a breakthrough year for Witherspoon, making three films, of which two in particular were stand-out parts.

Witherspoon was first seen portraying the wayward daughter of Susan Sarandon and Gene Hackman in ‘Twilight’, then taking a less notable role in ‘Overnight Delivery’ before finally meeting a milestone in her career in Gary Ross’s black and white 1959s drama, ‘Pleasantville’.

Witherspoon’s role as the kooky Jennifer earned her the Best Female Breakthrough Performance recognition at the Young Hollywood awards and immediately caught the critics’ attentions.

Witherspoon continued her climb up the success ladder in 1999 by playing the part of Alessandro Nivola’s lover in ‘Best Laid Plans’.

Witherspoon’s role of Tracey Flick in the dark satire ‘Election’ (1999) opposite Matthew Broderick was well received by the critics. Playing a fiercely ambitious high school president candidate, the part led to her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.

Witherspoon climaxed her roles of 1999 with a film she’s still most widely recognised for by many fans – ‘Cruel Intentions’. The remake of the French ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ drew a large box office audience with Witherspoon marking herself as a teen role model alongside pin-ups Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe.

Rachel McAdams Canadian Actress

2013-10-18T23:35:00.002-07:00

Rachel McAdams is a Canadian actress born on November 17, 1978 in London, Ontario, Canada. The former child competitive figure skater discovered her acting passion at age 12. She played a teen diva in her breakout role in the 2004 hit film Mean Girls. The actress has appeared box office hits such as Wedding Crashers, The Family Stone, The Time Traveler's Wife, Sherlock Holmes and The Vow.

Early Life
Canadian actress Rachel McAdams was born on November 17, 1978 in London, Ontario, Canada. Her father, Lance, worked as a mover, and her mother, Sandra, worked as a nurse. Together, they raised McAdams and her younger siblings, sister Kayleen and brother Daniel.

McAdams started competitive figure skating at age 4 and discovered acting at age 12, when she viewed a children's theater group performance. "I told my mother that I had to be in it, that I would die if I wasn't," McAdams said in an interview with The New York Times. Her parents fully supported her ambitions, and McAdams joined the Original Kids Theatre in her hometown.

Through high school, McAdams acted in local productions. She went on to study theater at York University in Toronto, where she performed in several stage and student film productions.

In 2001, McAdams landed her first television performance, playing a bulimic girl in the Disney series The Famous Jett Jackson. She made her film debut one year later, in the Canadian/Italian-produced film My Name is Tanino.

McAdams earned her first significant accolade for a supporting role in 2002's Perfect Pie; for her role in the low-budget film, she was nominated for a Genie Award (Canada's Oscar). With her career now gaining momentum, McAdams moved to Los Angeles, where she was cast opposite Rob Schneider in the 2002 comedy The Hot Chick. Later, in an interview with Vogue magazine, she amitted that the movie—her first film in the United States—was a "huge milestone" for her. McAdams returned to Canada soon after, and appeared in the TV series Slings and Arrows (2003), for which she won a Genie Award.

Commercial Success
McAdams played a title role in the hit teen film Mean Girls (2004), written by Saturday Night Live alum Tina Fey. Appearing with co-stars Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried, the film opened doors for the budding actress. That same year, she played the lead role in The Notebook (2004), a screen adaptation of Nicholas Sparks's romance novel. She caught the eye of the public in both films, winning two MTV Movie Awards in 2005 (for breakthrough female (Mean Girls) and best kiss (The Notebook).

In 2005, McAdams appeared in several films that achieved great commercial success, including the comedy Wedding Crashers, the thriller Red Eye and the comedy The Family Stone.

In what many in the industry viewed as an unusual move made at the height of her career, McAdams took a break from 2006 to 2007 to focus on herself.

Personal Life
From 2004 through 2007, McAdams dated Ryan Gosling, her Canadian co-star in The Notebook. Gosling told GQ in 2007, "God bless The Notebook, it introduced me to one of the great loves of my life." The pair reunited in 2008 before splitting again the next year.

McAdams launched Green is Sexy in 2007, an Earth-conscious website that offers environmental tips. According to a post by McAdams on her website, she's making an effort to lighten her footprint on the earth—supporting tree planting organizations, switching her house to green power and developing "an OCD for unplugging anything with a plug."

In 2009, the actress briefly dated American actor Josh Lucas, the ex-beau of actress Salma Hayek. McAdams was also tied to Welsh actor Michael Sheen, her co-star in the film Midnight in Paris.

McAdams's interests include cooking, though she has admitted, "I'm not an amazing cook, but I can follow a recipe," and "I wouldn't mind running a restaurant." The actress has long kept a healthy lifestyle and practiced kundalini yoga. She once stated of being a former vegetarian, "it made me very tired.

I just ate pasta—I was the most unhealthy vegetarian ever! I'd like to try it again now that I know about quinoa and bulgur. I think I'd be better the second time around."

McAdams resides in Toronto, Canada, where she shares a home with her brother.

At 17, the brunette beauty graduated early from high school in order to pursue acting in Hollywood. After a few forgettable TV appearances, she landed her coveted role as Robert Pattinson's sister in Twilight.

But Greene's fame also landed her in a sticky situation, when nude photos of the actress surfaced on the Internet. She emerged unscathed, though, winning a Teen Choice Award in 2009. While wrapping up the final two Twilight flicks, Greene briefly spent her downtime canoodling with another equally hot, young star: Joe Jonas.

Personal Life Greene was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and is the daughter of Michele (née Tatum), who works in insurance, and Joe Greene, a U.S. Marine who now owns his own concrete business. She grew up in Middleburg and Jacksonville, and went to University Christian School before transferring to Wolfson High School when she was in tenth grade. She moved to Los Angeles, California, at the age of 17 to pursue an acting career. Greene has an older brother named Joe, who still resides in Jacksonville with their parents.

Greene is good friends with her Twilight co-stars, particularly Kellan Lutz and Jackson Rathbone whom she knew before filming of the series began. Greene has stated that she grew up watching football and is a Florida Gators fan. She was also seen attending a Green Bay Packers game against the New York Giants with then boyfriend Joe Jonas and Jessica Szohr at Lambeau Field in 2010. In 2009, nude self-portraits of Greene were leaked onto the internet. Her attorneys threatened to sue various websites that published the pictures

Career She initially planned to become a model, but was told that she was not tall enough at 5'5" to be a fashion model and should instead focus on acting in commercials.[4] After taking commercial and acting classes, she fell in love with acting and realized that she preferred it over modeling. Greene graduated from high school early and moved to L.A. to pursue an acting career.[4] Since then, she has appeared as a guest on such television programs, as Punk'd and Crossing Jordan.

Greene's big break came in 2008 when she was cast as Alice Cullen in Twilight, a film based on the novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer. She reprises her role as Alice in the 2009 sequel to Twilight, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, 2010's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, 2011's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, 2012's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2.

Greene portrayed Michelle Burkham in the drama film Skateland, which premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

She reunited with her Twilight co-star Kellan Lutz in the movie A Warrior's Heart and also stars in thriller film, Summer's Blood, as well as the Dark Castle Entertainment production The Apparition, which began filming on February 1, 2010.

Appearing nude in a body-painted bikini, Greene posed for SoBe advertisements that ran in the 2010 issue of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. She received "The Style Icon Award" at Hollywood Life’s Young Hollywood Awards this year. Greene was also presented an award from the PETA foundation for representing Avon and their no testing on animals policy.

Greene presented an award at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, 2010.

In 2013, Ashley Greene starred in the historical film CBGB about the former Manhattan music club with the same name

Jennifer Garner Beautiful and Down to Earth

2013-10-15T23:54:00.001-07:00

Jennifer Anne Garner (born April 17, 1972) is an American actress and film producer. Garner garnered recognition on television for her performance as CIA officer Sydney Bristow in the thriller drama series Alias, which aired on ABC for five seasons from 2001 to 2006. For her work on the series, Garner won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award. If you haven't watched Alias, you should! It is an awesome series and on netflix.

While working on Alias, she gained minor roles in movies such as Pearl Harbor (2001), with her later husband Ben Affleck, and Catch Me if You Can (2002). Since then, Garner has appeared in supporting as well as lead roles on the big screen in projects including Daredevil (2003), 13 Going on 30 (2004), Elektra (2005), a spin-off of Daredevil, and Juno (2007). Garner is married to actor and director Ben Affleck, with whom she has three children.

Early life Garner was born in Houston, Texas. Her mother, Patricia Ann (née English), was an English teacher from Oklahoma, and her father, William John "Bill" Garner, worked as a chemical engineer. When she was four years old, her father's job with Union Carbide relocated her family to Princeton, West Virginia, and then later to Charleston, West Virginia, where Garner resided until her college years. She has credited her older sister, Melissa Lynn Garner Wylie, who resides in Boston, Massachusetts, as a source of inspiration to her. Her younger sister is Susannah Kay Garner Carpenter.

Garner's conservative upbringing included going to church every Sunday, not wearing make-up or a bikini, and waiting at least until the age of 16 to be allowed to get her ears pierced, which, she later joked, made her family "just a step away from being Amish." She said: "I'd hate to say it was strict. It was just not condoned. I never felt hemmed in." She began taking ballet lessons at the age of three and continued to dance throughout her youth, but she did not envision herself becoming a classical ballerina. Garner attended George Washington High School in Charleston and graduated in 1990. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama from Denison University, where she was initiated into the sorority Pi Beta Phi.

Garner did not plan on becoming an actress: "I wanted to be a doctor, a librarian. ... (Acting) wasn't possible to me. The more I learned what there was to learn about this field, the more hungry I became for it. It comes out of wanting to learn more, as opposed to 'I want to be a star.' I never felt that way," she said.

Bright Lights, Big City - 1994 After graduating college with a performance degree, Garner moves to New York City to pursue acting. "I wasn't naturally talented, just really, really driven," she says to PEOPLE. "My parents never said anything except 'Go for it.'"

Earning a Living - 1995 While landing a small role in the Danielle Steel miniseries Zoya, the aspiring actress pays the bills by working as a hostess. Years later she recognized a familiar face at an ABC party. "I said, 'Hi, I'm Jennifer Garner. I'm on Alias,'" she recalls to PEOPLE. "He said, 'Hi, I'm Steven Weber. I'm on Once and Again.' I said, 'You recognize me, don't you?' He said, 'Yeah, I'm trying to figure out where.' I said, 'I used to seat you on Sundays for brunch at Isabella's.'"

Marriages and family On October 19, 2000, Garner married actor Scott Foley, whom she had met on the set of Felicity in 1998. After separating from Foley in March 2003, Garner filed for divorce in May 2003, citing irreconcilable differences, and the two were officially divorced on March 30, 2004. Following her separation, Garner dated Alias co-star Michael Vartan from August 2003 to March 2004.

Sometime in early to mid-2004, Garner started dating Daredevil co-star Ben Affleck and the two made their first public appearance as a couple by attending the Boston Red Sox's opening World Series games in October 2004. Since her relationship with Affleck, first as girlfriend and then as wife, Garner has been a tabloid staple. "Ben taught me that you cannot read that stuff, that it's poison," she said in 2009. On Garner's 33rd birthday, Affleck proposed to her with a 4.5 carats (900 mg) diamond ring from Harry Winston. Affleck married Garner, who was four months pregnant at the time, on June 29, 2005 in a private ceremony in the Caribbean, officiated by family friend and Garner's Alias co-star, Victor Garber, at the Parrot Cay resort on the Turks and Caicos Islands. The couple have three children: daughters Violet Anne Affleck (born December 1, 2005) and Seraphina Rose Elizabeth Affleck (born January 6, 2009), and son Samuel Garner Affleck (born February 27, 2012).
