After 5 years of non-stop, round-the-clock construction, the massive and awesome Swaminarayan Temple Monument to World Peace was inaugurated today.. The Temple in New Delhi, India, is truely a modern day Wonder of the World!
It is one of the biggest and most intricate religious places of worship ever constructed. Combining several completely different and contrasting architectural styles of Hindu temple architecture of northern India -- Rajasthani, Orrisan, Gujarati, Mughal and Jain -- the Monument is entirely constructed of marble and the red-sandstone that Delhi is famous for, and that so many of her monuments are constructed of. It was completed in only 5 years, a world record of sorts.

So after years of waiting, the Temple was yesterday opened to the public -- and to photographers. Below is the Temple Complex as seen through the eyes of a photographer. The pictures are a great many and might take some time to load, but totally, totally worth the wait!

At its inaguration, it is widely being heralded as one of the greatest monuments India has ever produced. I hope you enjoy viewing this architectual marvel as much as I enjoyed having the honor presenting it.

Monument of the Temple

The monument, built without steel, is entirely composed of sandstone and marble. It consists of 234 ornately carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, 20 quadrangled shikhars, a spectacular Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants) and 20,000 murtis ( idols ) and statues of India's great sadhus, devotees, acharyas ( religious heads ) and divine personalities.

The monument is a fusion of several architectural styles of pink stone and pure white marble. Pink stone symbolizes bhakti (devotion) in eternal bloom and white marble of absolute purity and eternal peace. The monument was built after over 300 million man hours of services rendered by 11,000 volunteers, sadhus ( saints ) and artisans.

It is the one of the wonders of the modern world, and the wonders of modern India.

Lord Sahajanand - Swaminarayan Darshan / Hall of Values

The Sahajanand Darshan or Hall of Values is a huge museum of India's Spiritual Heritage, and the heritage of the Swaminarayan sect, featured through the life of His Holiness Bhagwan ( Lord )Swaminarayan. The many exhibits portray the messages of ahimsa (nonviolence), endeavor, prayer, vegetarianism, family harmony, etc. through 3-D dioramas and presentations from the life of His Holiness Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Exquisite settings and statues in each diorama are brought to life through robotics, fibre optics, light and sound effects, dialogues and music, transporting the audience to 18th century India.

Garden of India or Bharat Upvan

"Through the millenniums people have always looked up to role models for inspiration, guidance, peace and courage. Their sterling lives radiate a perennial glow for the whole of mankind, regardless of all human, geographical and cultural distinctions. India, which has the most ancient continuous civilisation in the world, which hosts one sixth of humanity and has the largest democracy in the world, has produced from its vast cultural matrix a legion of role models for the world to emulate."
The Garden of India is a huge garden featuring flora and fauna from all over the length and breadth of India, from the Himalayas to the Kanyakumari, and the Deserts of Persia to the Jungles of Burma. The Bharat Upvan also has statues and figures of India's Kings, Warriors and Freedom Fighters, India's National Figures, and India's Women Personalities.

Musical Fountains / Yagnapurush Kund

The Yagnapurush Kund is a fascinating combination of a Vedic yagna kund and a musical fountain. It is the world's largest yagna kund measuring 300' X 300' with 2,870 steps and 108 small shrines. In its center lies an 8-petaled lotus shaped yagna kund designed according to the Jayaakhya Samhita of the Panchratra scripture. Its perfect geometric forms testify to ancient India's ancient knowledge in mathematics and geometry. At night the center comes to life with a colorful musical water fountain that echoes the Vedic sentiments of India.

Belur channakeshava temple outside Belur is well known for Chennakeshava temple which was a capital during Hoysala kingdom for a short duration. This placed is situated in Hassan district of Karnataka in India. The Channakeshava temple is one of the finest built using soft soapstone during Hoysala period. The temple was constructed during 1116 AD to mark the victory done by the king Vishnuvardhana of Talkad against Cholas. Belur is on the banks of river Yegachi. This place is one of the famous tourist destination in Karnataka - India. As per saying, the beauty of this temple is inside as there are 48 pillars carved in different designs. Belur was also called as Velapuri during Hoysala period. The empire during Hoysala period is called Yadava kings which was under Chalukyas and became separated later.

How to reach
Belur temple carvings near front door Belur is 40Kms from the district head quarters, Hassan in North direction. The transportation is only by road. This place is just on the way to Chikmagalur and frequent buses available. Other than this main road, there are few more ways to reach Belur. People planning to visit Halebid and Belur, can proceed to Halebid taking right turn at Hagare (25Kms from Hassan on Chikmagalur road). From Hagare, Halebid is 12 Kms. Travellers having private vehicles can only plan this route as public transport is very less.

After visiting Halebid, tourists can reach Belur which is 15Kms. There is frequent private and Government transportation available between Belur and Halebid. One more way to reach Belur is to travel upto Halebid from Hassan taking Master Control Facility (also called space city) road. Halebid is 30Kms by this road from Hassan. Very frequent bus service available between Hassan and Halebid in this route. Nearest airport is Mangalore or Bangalore (both of same distance).

Gravity pillar is about 42 feet high of single stone, standing on its self weight. Kappe Channigaraya temple is located south of Sri Keshava Temple. Inside people can see Venugopala, Saraswathi, Lakshminarayana, Ganapathi and Chamundeswari statues. Few more temples of Anjaneya, Krishna, Narasimha, Soumyanayaki, Veeranarayana can also be seen. Statues of Vishnuvardhana and Krishnaraja Wodeyar can be seen in a courtyard near the pond. Garudangambha and Garuda statue are outside the main temple facing towards Sri Channakeshava.

Belur channakeshava temple inside pillars Guides have been appointed by Archaeological department for a nominal fee of INR 125 (reciept will be issued). Photography allowed inside the temple premesis, no additional fee for cameras. A nominal fee of INR 10 is to be paid for flood light inside the temple if tourists want to see the carvings.
Standard tourist package available by Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporations (KSTDC) to visit Belur, Halebeedu and Shravanabelagola. Halebid and Belur are situated to the North of Hassan (district head quarters) and Shravanabelagola is situated almost to the South of Hassan. So, people travelling from Bangalore can visit Shravanabelagola first as it is on the way to Hassan (on National Highway 48 linking Bangalore and Mangalore). After visiting Belur and Halebidu, people can proceed towards Chikmagalur if they have planned to visit Western ghats and other tourist places in Shimoga and other districts. People travelling from North part of India, they can visit Belur and Halebid and proceed towards Hassan and see Shravanabelagola later.

Tirupati is situated at 67-km from Chittoor in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Tirupati is one of the important pilgrim centres in India. The ancient and sacred temple of Sri Venkateswara is located on the seventh peak, Venkatachala (Venkata Hill) of the Tirupati Hill. This historic shrine of Sri Venkateswara is famous all over the country and attracts pilgrims from all over the country who stand in line for hours together to obtain a glimpse of the presiding deity for a few fleeting seconds.

The shrine is located on a hill at Tirumala, a cluster of seven hills known as Seshachalam or Venkatachalam with an elevation of 853m (2, 800ft.) above the sea level. It is said to be the richesttemple in the world. This temple is a vibrant cultural and philanthropic institution with a grand history spanning several centuries.

All the great dynasties of rulers of the southern peninsula paid homage to Lord Sri Venkateswara in this ancient shrine. The Pallavas of Kancheepuram (9th century AD), the Cholas of Thanjavur (a century later), the Pandyas of Madurai, and the kings and chieftains of Vijayanagar (14th - 15th century AD) were devotees of the Lord.

Tirupathi is a fine example of dravidian temple architecture. The 'gopuram' or tower of the Tirupati Temple shows a characteristic feature of Dravidian architecture. The 'Vimana' or Cupola over the sanctum sanctorum is covered entirely with gold plate and is known as "the Ananda Nilayam". TheShrine consists of three 'Prakarams' or enclosures. The outermost enclosure contains the 'Dhvajastambha' or the banner post and, among others, the statues of Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya and his consorts, and of Todarmal, the minister of Akbar.

The idol of the deity, the full figure of Lord Venkateswara or 'Venkataramana' or 'Srinivasa' or 'Balaji' has the attributes of both Vishnu and Shiva, preserving and destroying aspects of the Hindu Trinity.

Tirupathi Balaji Temple

Padi Kavali Maha Dwara :

The Padi Kavali Maha Dwara or Outer Gopuram stands on a quadrangular base. Its architecture is that of the later Chola period. The inscriptions on the gopuram belong to 13thcentury. There are a number of stucco figures of Vaishnava gods like Hanuman, Kevale Narasimha and Lakshmi Narasimha on the gopuram.

Sampangi Pradakshinam :

The path for circumnavigating the temple is called a pradakshinam. The main temple has three prakarams. Between the outermost and middle prakarams is the second pathway for circumambulation known as the Sampangi Pradakshinam. Currently, this pathway is closed topilgrims . The Sampangi Pradakshinam contains several interesting mandapams like the Pratima Mandapam, Ranga Mandapam, Tirumala Raya Mandapam, Saluva Narasimha Mandapam, Aina Mahal and Dhvajasthambha Mandapam.

Ranga Mandapam :

Ranga Mandapam, also called the Ranganayakula Mandapam, is located in the south-eastern corner of the Sampangi Pradakshinam. Theshrine within it is believed to be the place where the utsava murti of Lord Ranganadha of Srirangam was kept during the 14th century , when Srirangam was occupied by Muslim rulers. It is said to have been constructed between 1320 and 1360 AD by the Yadava ruler Sri Ranganadha Yadava Raya. It is constructed according to the Vijayanagara style of architecture.

Tirumala Raya Mandapam :

Adjoining the Ranga Mandapam on the western side, and facing the Dhvajasthambha Mandapam is a spacious complex of pavilions known as the Tirumala Raya Mandapam or Anna Unjal Mandapam.

It consists of two different levels, the front at a lower level and the rear at a higher. The southern or inner portion of this Mandapam was constructed by Saluva Narasimha in 1473 AD to celebrate a festival for Sri Venkateswara called Anna Unjal Tirunal. This structure was extended to its present size by Araviti Bukkaraya Ramaraja, Sriranga Raja and Tirumala Raja.

It is in this Mandapam, that the utsava murthi Malayappan, holds His annual darbar or Asthanam during the hoisting of the Garudadhwaja on Dhwajastambham to mark the commencement of Brahmotsavam. Incidentally, the prasadam distributed on this occasion is still called Tirumalarayan Pongal.

Tirumala Raya Mandapam :

The Mandapam has a typical complex of pillars in the Vijayanagara style, with a central pillar surrounded by smaller pillars, some of which emit musical notes when struck with a stone. The main pillars have rearing horses with warriors mounted on them. Some of the best sculptures of thetemple are found in bold relief in the Mandapam. The bronze statues of Todermallu, his mother Matha Mohana Devi and wife Pitha Bibi, are kept in a corner of the Mandapam.

The Aina Mahal :

The Aina Mahal is on the northern side of the Tirumala Raya Mandapam. It consists of two parts - an open mandapam in the front consisting of six rows comprising six pillars each, and ashrine behind it consisting of an Antarala and Garbhagriha. It has large mirrors which reflect images in an infinite series. There is an unjal in the middle of the room in which the Lord is seated and festivals conducted.

Saint Ramanujacharya prescribed all the elaborate rituals and mode of worship in the temple that are still followed by the priests and devotees. Anointing the idol with camphor, and the offering by pilgrims of the hair on their heads by getting themselves shaved by licensed barbers are the important customs in vogue at Tirupati Temple.

The most famous is the annual festival called 'Brahmotsavam', which is celebrated on grand scale for nine days in September, attractingpilgrims and tourists from all parts of the country. The fifth and ninth days of the festival are especially significant in as much as Garudostavam and Rathotavam takes place on those days.

Agra - the first impression is of a chaotic, overcrowded, polluted mess that can offer nothing of interest.But wait, hold your breath, for hiding behind the heat and the chaos is the stunning monument of cool white marble, the wonder that is called the Taj Mahal.

In Agra layers of history are peeled away to reveal an amazing tapestry of life - of wars waged, of great architectural magnificence and above all a testimony of the undying love of a king for his queen.

That Agra is unparalleled as a travel destination is an established fact. Even Bill Clinton testified to as much when he declared the world was divided into two: those who have seen the Taj and those who have not! Besides the Taj Mahal though, there are a lot of other important sights in and around Agra. The Agra Fort, Moti Masjid and innumerable other attractions make the city feature on every travellers must-do-sightseeing list.

Travel a little outside Agra and you'll come to Fatehpur Sikri, a site for monuments that are historically as important as the Taj Mahal. Every tour guide who does Agra ensures that Fatehpur Sikri is also visited. There development in architectural style from Akbar's Sikri to Shah Jahan's Agra is important, and only if you see the monuments at both will you have begun to explore Mughal architecture. Fatehpur Sikri's sights include monuments from the times of Akbar: the Buland Darwaza and the Dargah of Salim Chishti.

The first time you travel to Agra, the city can be a bit overwhelming with its noise and big crowds. There are government run and private tourist information centres galore and you should take advantage of them. Most of them offer tour guide services, which is useful if you're stuck in a chaotic Indian city, particularly if you're low on knowledge about its premier attraction. There are also nearly as many touts as tourists! Beware of them and stay with registered guides. However, no matter how many times you've done Agra and the Taj Mahal, their attraction never fades. If you're an old Agra hand of course, you'll be quite at home in this crazy bustling town.

The Taj Mahal
Emperor Shah Jahan built this white marble mausoleum for his queen Arjumand Bano Begum or Mumtaz Mahal. The building aside, the Taj Mahal is one of the most glorious symbols of love. Great builder that he was, the Emperor commissioned a building that has lasted centuries to remain a thing of rare breathtaking beauty. The building was commissioned in 1631 and decorated with the landmark technique of intricate marble inlay work.

Situated on the banks of the River Yamuna, the Taj Mahal stands at the northern end of formal gardens. The white marble came from Makrana in Rajasthan and the red sandstone from Fatehpur Sikri.

Precious stones like jade, crystal, turquoise, lapis lazuli, sapphire, jade, coral and diamonds were brought from far-flung places in Tibet, China, Sri Lanka, Persia and Afghanistan. It is believed that a fleet of 1000 elephants was used to transport the material.

Gateway to the Taj Mahal

The main entrance to the monument is of red sandstone, with domed pavilions in the Hindu style. The gateway is inscribed with verses from the Koran, the lettering of which appear the same size through an illusion created by the craftsmen who enlarged and lengthened the letters at different positions.

The gardens enclosed by high walls are divided into four parts or the charbagh, which symbolises the Gardens of Paradise in Islam. There are fountains and water channels flowing through the garden, representing the rivers of water, milk, wine and honey. The monument itself stands on a raised platform with four minarets in the corners. The minarets have a slightly outward incline, to prevent them from falling on the monument during an earthquake. You have to remove your shoes before getting on to the platform. Socks, or cloth shoes available at the base, should be kept on since the marble gets very hot during the day.

A huge dome, rising 44 feet high with a brass spire on top crowns the Taj Mahal. Inside is a central chamber with high ceilings that houses the cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. A delicately carved trelliswork marble screen encloses them. The empress’ tomb, which is directly under the dome, has the 99 names of Allah inscribed on it. Shah Jahan’s cenotaph is higher and to the left. It has a pen box inscribed on it, which symbolises a male ruler. Just below these cenotaphs are the real graves, in a dark and humid crypt filled with incense. If you donate a few coins to the attendant, he will lay them as offerings on the graves.
Surrounding the central chamber are four octagonal rooms where the other members of the royal family were to have been laid to rest. The base is carved with floral motifs, of roses, tulips, and narcissi. Some of the designs have upto 60 pieces.

On both sides of the Taj are two identical red sandstone mosques. The one to the left holds Friday prayers even today. The one to the right, the jawab (answer) was built only for symmetry and holds no prayers since it faces away from the Mecca.

In front of the main entrance is a platform, which is popular for use as a spot for taking photographs. You will find many couples sitting on it with the Taj Mahal as the backdrop to pose for the most precious memento of their visit. On the western wall of the compound is the museum there is a good collection of Mughal miniature paintings - portraits of the Mughal rulers, ancient coins and porcelain. The museum also has a gallery with the original drawings of the Taj Mahal on display. They show how meticulously the building was planned, including an accurate estimate of the time to be taken for its construction.

Agra Fort

Akbar, the greatest empire-builder of the Mughals, commissioned the Agra Fort in 1565. Shah Jahan made alterations by pulling down many of the original buildings and replacing them with marble ones.

His son Aurangzeb, who was in constant conflict with local chieftains and neighbouring principalities, added the outer ramparts.The tourist entry is through the Amar Singh Gate, which was used by General Lake and his army to capture the fort. The main entrance, the Delhi Gate, is now closed. Much of the fort is occupied by the army and is out of bounds for visitors. However, the buildings open to the public have some superb architectural sights.

The Diwan-I-Am or the Hall of audience is a pillared hall whose centrepiece is the throne alcove. This marble structure was inlaid with precious stones in floral motifs, and was built to house the Peacock Throne. The exquisitely crafted throne was taken to Delhi by Shah Jahan and was looted by Nadir Shah and carried away to Persia.
The Diwan-I-Khas, where the emperor held audience with visiting dignitaries, was built in 1635. It had two thrones on the terrace, one in white marble and one in black slate. Emperor Shah Jahan is believed to have used the marble throne for repose, and the slate throne to watch elephant fights in the courtyard.

Khas Mahal

The Khas Mahal, where the emperor slept, had cavities in its flat roof to insulate it from the hot winds of summer. The Macchi Bhawan, or fish chamber, had fountains, tanks and water channels stocked with fish. The emperor and his courtiers amused themselves by angling here.

The Nagina Masjid was built in marble by Shah Jahan to be used exclusively by the women of the zenana or harem. Below it is the Zenana Meena Bazaar where the ladies could look at goods without being seen. The Sheesh Mahal or Palace of Mirrors, whose mirrored walls reflected and enhanced the lamplights, was used by the women for bathing. A two-storied octagonal tower, the Musamman Burj, is said to be the place from where Shah Jahan last saw the Taj Mahal before dying.

Itmad-ud-daulah

Popularly known as ‘baby Taj’, this is the tomb of Mirza Ghiyath Begh, who was wazir or Chief Minister in Emperor Jahangir’s court.
He became a very powerful person, more so when the Emperor Jahangir married his daughter Noor Jahan. The tomb was designed by Noor Jahan and was the first Mughal building using marble inlay work.

The Jama Masjid was built by Shah Jahan and dedicated to his favourite daughter Jahanara Begum. It is surrounded by the crowded bazaar, which is interesting to wander through on foot. A kilometre away from Itmad-ud-daulah is Chini ka rauza, the mausoleum of Afzal Khan, and the son of Mirza Ghiyath Begh. The tomb derives its name from the glazed tiles (chini) on its façade. The Ram Bagh, laid out by Babur in 1528 is said to have been the resting-place of his body before it was taken away for a final burial in Kabul.
Sikandra, Akbar's mausoleum     Akbar’s mausoleum at Sikandra, 10 kms from Agra, can be visited by hiring an autorickshaw for the day. The construction of the mausoleum was begun by Akbar himself, and completed in 1613 by his son Jahangir. In a way, it is a synthesis of the bold masculine red sandstone structures built by Akbar and the delicately crafted white marble buildings of Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The entrance is through a huge gateway that blocks view of the tomb from outside.

The tomb is in the centre of the char bagh, gardens laid out in four quadrants. The mausoleum is four storeyed, the first three in red sandstone, and the one on the top in white marble. Inside, the original ceilings had frescoes in blue and gold. Some of it has recently been restored. Around the tomb you will find some interesting wildlife in the form of monkeys, deer and black buck.

Varanasi, the holy city of India, is also known by the name of Kashi and Benaras. Kashi, the city of Moksha for Hindus since centuries, is known for its fine-quality silks, 'paan' and Benares Hindu University and Avimukta of the ancient days, Varanasi is the most popular pilgrimage point for the Hindus. One of the seven holiest cities, Varanasi city is also one the Shakti Peethas and one of the twelve Jyotir Linga sites in India. In Hinduism it is believed that those who die and are cremated here get an instant gateway to liberation from the cycle of births and re-births.

Considered as the abode of Lord Shiva, Varanasi is situated on the banks of River Ganges, which is believed to have the power of washing away all of one's sins. As pundits here will tell you, whatever is sacrificed and chanted here or given in charity reaps its fruits thousand times more than those good deeds performed at other places because of the power of that place. It is believed that three nights of fasting in Varanasi city can reap you rewards of many thousands of lifetimes of asceticism!

Varanasi is the oldest city of the world. Varanasi is more than 3000 years old and is famous as the city of temples. In Varanasi, there are temples at every few paces. Looking at the number of temples in Varanasi, it is hard to believe that a large number of them were demolished during the medieval times. Jyotirlinga Visvanatha Temple or Golden Temple, rebuilt in 1776, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Jnana Vapi well (meaning 'Well of Wisdom) is believed to have been dug by Lord Shiva himself. It is believed that the majestic Alamgir mosque has replaced one of the most ancient shrines known as the temple of Bindu Madhava. The thirty-three hundred million shrines fill one with awe and wonder with sheer numbers.

The Ganga Ghats (river front) are the most popular pilgrimage spot of Varanasi and are centers of music and learning. There is a great tradition of Yatras in the holy city of Kashi and the most sacred path is that of Panchkoshi Parikrama, the fifty-mile path with a radius of five miles that cover 108 shrines along the way, with Panchakoshi Temple as its main shrine. Other popular pilgrimage route is Nagara Pradakshina, which covers seventy-two shrines along the way. Since time immemorial Varanasi is a great center of learning. The holy city has been a symbol of spiritualism, philosophy and mysticism for thousands of years and has produced great saints and personalities like Guatama Buddha, Mahavira, Kabir, Tulsi Das, Shankaracharaya, Ramanuja and Patanjali.

Varanasi is said to be the oldest surviving city of the world. Varanasi is also called as Kashi or Benaras. Being the most venerated pilgrim place in Hindu religion, Varanasi is said to be a museum of temples. Also called the city of temples, Varanasi is home to about 2,000 temples. People from all parts of India as well as the world come to Varanasi to visit these temples, making the holy temples of Varanasi amongst the most visited temples in India. Many important and famous temples are located at Ganga Ghats (river front), adding to the religious value of the holy river, Ganges.

How to reach
Pancha Kalyani pond This place is located inerior to the Bangalore - Mysore main road in the right side while going towards Mysore. There are so many ways to reach this place. Visitors coming from Bangalore have to take right diversion Just after Mandya town. From Mandya, Melukote is nearly 40 Kms. People travelling from Mysore have to come towards Srirangapatna (15 Kms from Mysore). Just after Srirangapatna, take left diversion to proceed towards Pandavapura. From Pandavapura, Melukote is 34 Kms.

chaluvanarayana swamy temple At Pandavapura railway station, visitors have two choices to reach Melukote. They can proceed taking right turn to reach Pandavapura town and again take left diversion to reach Melukote via T.S.Chatra, Mahadeshwara pura, Bellale and Jakkanahalli. From Jakkanahalli Melukote is only 5 Kms. Total distance from Pandavapura to Melukote via this route is 22Kms. From Pandavapura railway station people shall have one more route to reach Melukote. They can proceed straight after Pandavapura railway station and reach a place called Chinakuruli. From Chinakuruli Melukote is 18Kms. People travelling from North part of Karnataka shall have to come to the main city called Krishnaraj pet (K.R.Pet). K.R.Pet also belongs to Mandya district. Visitors can proceed to Melukote directly from K.R.Pet. Melukote is 27 Kms from K.R.Pet. People travelling from Tumkur district can reach the place called Nagamangala. From Nagamangala Melukote is nearly 27 Kms.

Places to visit in Melukote

Sri Yoganarasimha swamy temple The entire Melukote is occupied with so many visiting places including temples and ponds. Sri Yoganarasimha Swamy temple islocated at the top of the hill. People can climb the steps from the ground level or they can take their vehicles (only light motor vehicles) almost nearer to the temple. But still some more steps are to be climbed to reach the temple. The pooja timings at Yoganarasimha temple are, 9.00 to 10.00am (Nithyakatle). Abhisheka will be done from 10.00 to 11.00am and darshan will be from 11.00am to 1.00pm. Evening darshan is from 5.30pm to 8.00pm. During Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the darshan will be from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 5.00pm to 8.00pm. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple but people can carry their cameras along with them.

Sisters pond Sri Cheluvanarayana swamy temple is located at the centre of Melukote. Before visiting Sri Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple, people can visit the Pancha Kalyani pond. The pond is very big with mantaps, Bhuvaneshwari mantap is located here. The puja timings for Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple are, 8.30am to 12.30pm, 4.00pm to 6.00pm and 7.00pm to 8.30pm. During Saturdays and Sundays, the morning puja timings will be from 8.30am to 1.30pm. Inside the Cheluvanarayana swamy temple the pillars are carved beautifully. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple. There is no place to keep the items so people can carry the cameras along with them. Behind this temple, the sisters ponds (elder and younger sisters, Akka-Tangi kola) are located. Proceeding further there is Roya Gopuram which is a scenic place and people can see the aerial view of the surroundings. Sisters pond and other parts also look very beautiful. Other important places are Sri Yadugiri Ammanavara Sannidhi and Dhanushkoti

Very good Vegetarian food is available everywhere here. Parking facilities is available nearby in almost all the visiting places for Light motor vehicles. The main transportation to Melukote is by bus from Mandya, K.R.Pet, Nagamangala and Pandavapura (or Srirangapatna). The nearest railway station is the district head quarters, Mandya.

Jog Fall

Jog Fall located at southern state of Karnataka is India's highest waterfall. Its height is 830 feet and is located on Sharavati River. The falls are in four distinct cascades called as, Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket.

How to reach Jog Fall
Jog fall located on National Highway number 206 connecting Honovar to Tumkur and is well connected by road. Jog fall is 372 KM from Bangalore the capital of Karnataka State. Nearest best place to stay is Shimoga the district headquarter. You can also stay at Jog fall as we found some budget hotels of Youth hostel and KTDC. Accommodation available at the cost of Rs 600 to 700 per day for a family or a group of people ( 7 to 8 members ) . Vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is available. From Shimoga Jog fall is 105 KM and is nearly 30 KM from Sagar. You can stay at Sagar also if you want to be near to the Jog fall. Shimoga is well connected by road from Mysore and Bangalore, in day time you can get bus in one hour duration from both these places

Jog fall close viewWe started from Mysore at 2.30 PM and reached Shimoga at 9.30 PM ( same day ). We stayed that night at a hotel near the bus stop and next day we took a local bus to Sagar at 9 AM. Buses runs frequently between Shimoga and Sagar but you are lucky if get a direct one to Jog fall. Shimoga to Sagar it took 2 hours and we board another local bus at Sagar and finally reached Jog fall at 12.15 PM. While returning we got a direct bus from Jog fall to Shimoga and we reached our hotel at 6.30 PM. So you can get a better idea about the stay and journey as we stared at 9 AM from our hotel at Shimoga and returned to hotel at 6.30 PM after enjoying 3 hours at the fall. On our return trip to Bangalore we board one deluxe bus at 11.30 PM and reached Bangalore in the early morning 6.30 A.M ( 7 hours ).

There is one train root near to Shimoga( Nearest railway station to visit Jogfall is Thalaguppa ( not a broad gauge station ) and it is an end station for the Shimoga district.) but I found road transport is better. Backwater of this river Sharavathi forms so many small islands. There is no way to reach these islands.

Best time to visit to see water falls is when sufficient water is available in the river. Usually from June to September is the best time as monsoon remains active during this time of the year.

This place is almost resides in the border of Western ghats of mountain ranges. Afternoon is the best time to watch the fall as sunlight will directly fall on the water fall.
There are viewing points to see and enjoy the water fall.

Mysore city Mysore is 140 Kms from Bangalore ( capital of Karnataka) is well connected by rail and road. By road it will not take more than 2 and half hours from Bangalore and two hours by rail. Road travel is comfortable as four lane national highway is connecting both the cities.
There are many hotels available but in busy seasons like Dasara festivals it is better to book in advance. You can see our list of hotels at Mysore. We had a comfortable stay for two days at Hotel Ramanashree.
Mysore is famous for its silk and sandalwood. You can visit Kaveri emporiums for Karnataka handicrafts and silk clothes. Mysore Dasara is world famous which is celeberated during Navarathri festival (September - October).

Places to visit in and around Mysore:

Mysore Palace is the main attraction of Mysore. Mysore is known for the palaces and called as City of Palaces. Mysore Palace is situated at the center of the city.

Jayachamarajendra Zoological park is a holiday picnic spot. The zoo is closed on Tuesday. The zoo is within the city premises and nearer to Mysore race course.

Srirangapatna (belongs to Mandya district, 15 kms from Mysore towards Bangalore). Lord Sri Ranganatha temple, Tipu's palace, Dariya Daulat Bagh, Gumbaz can be seen in this place.

Chamundi hill is located at the out skirts of Mysore town and 12 Kms from the city. Chamundeswari Devi temple, Statues of Nandi (bull) and Mahishasura can be seen.

St.Philominas Church is situated in the city. The Church is constructed with the architecture of Gothic.

Rangana thittu bird sanctuary (belongs to Mandya district) is situated 13 kms from Mysore. The place is on the river Kaveri and famous for migratory birds. Best season to visit is from June to October.

Krishnarajasagar Dam also called Brindavan Gardens or KRS is a picnic spot. Dancing fountain during evening is the main attraction. This place belongs to Mandya district and is 15 kms from Mysore. The dam is constructed on the river Kaveri.

Somnathpur, famous for Hoysala temple, is located at a distance of 35Kms from Mysore.

Shivanasamudram (belongs to Mandya district and also called Bluff) is famous for waterfalls named Gaganchukki and Bharachukki. This place has the distinction of starting first Hydro electric project in Asia. Temple of Ranganatha can be seen.

Thalakad is approximately 45Kms from Mysore and located at the banks of river Cauvery. The area is full of very fine sand and temples which are buried under the sand.

Malai Mahadeshwara hills (belongs to Chamarajanagar district) is a famous pilgrim centre and is situated at a distance of 130Kms from Mysore. A water stream called Antharagange and Mahadeswara temple are the main attraction of this place.

Biligiri Ranganatha hills (belongs to Chamarajanagar district), popularly known as BR Hills is situated at a distance of 80Kms from Mysore. Ranganatha swamy temple, Champaka tree (100 years old) and the wild life on the way to the hill top are the main attractions.

Bandipur (belongs to Chamarajanagar district) is a Tiger reserve and is 80Kms from Mysore on Mysore Ooty road. The project Tiger has been launched by WWF to save the tiger. The forest area is in between Nagarhole (Karnataka) and Madhumalai (Tamilnadu) forests.

Gopalaswamy Hill is nearer to Bandipur. Temple of Himad Gopalaswamy is very famous place and is a hill station.

Nanjangud (pilgrim place) is famous for lord Nanjundeswara temple (Shiva temple). This place is also called Dakshina Kashi. Nanjangud is at a distance of 20Kms from Mysore and on the banks of river Kabini.

Chunchanakatte, 55 kms from Mysore is famous for water falls of river Kaveri and Kodandarama temple.

Mudukuthore is a pilgrim centre and Mallikarjuna temple is situated here. Mudukuthore is very nearer to Talkad.

Thirumakudalu Narsipur is a place where Sangam of rivers Kaveri, Kabini (Kapila) and Sphatika Sarovar can be seen. Agasthyeshwara temple, monuments belonging to Ganga, Chola, Hoysala and Vijayanagar periods can also be seen.

Suttur, Shivarathreeswara math, triple shrined Mahadeshwara temple are situated here.

You must stay minimum three days to visit all the places nearer to Mysore.

Ranganatha swamy temple Srirangapatna, a historical place belongs to Mandya district of Karnataka state in India. This place is located on the Mysore-Bangalore highway and is at a distance of 15 KM from Mysore. This place is also called as the island fortress - Srirangapatna. This was the capital of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, popularly known as tiger of Mysore. Tipu's summer palace is now converted as a museum. Tipu Sultan died after a long battle with the English kingdom. The area where his body was found is well marked. One must visit this place and pay respect to this great Indian hero.

How to reach
Dariya DaulatPeople travelling from Bangalore can get down at Srirangapatna which is just on the main road proceeding towards Mysore. Both bus and train service available. Visitors travelling by train have to move a kilometer or two as the train station is at the other end of the town. They can first visit the Ranganatha temple first and later visit the other places. People can complete their visit to Srirangapatna within 2-3 hours and proceed towards Mysore. People visiting this place from Mysore can travel in the same Bangalore-Mysore road and the distance is only 15Kms. The normal trip package is to visit Srirangapatna, Ranganathittu bird sanctuary and Brindavan gardens which are located closeby.

Places to visit in Srirangapatna
Ranganatha Temple The visiting places in Srirangapatna are spread both the sides of the Bangalore-Mysore road. While travelling towards Mysore, the following places are located to the right side. Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple, the famous sleeping statue of Lord Ranganatha can be seen here. Car parking available nearer to the temple premesis. Horse riding can be experienced if interested. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple. There is no place to keep the cameras so visitors can carry the gadgets along with them. Outside the temple, there are lot of handicrafts availalbe at a very reasonable price and bargain possible. Beside the temple (to the North side) visitors can see Colonel Bailey's Dungeon (jail). Photography is possible in this area. Beside the Jail the river Kaveri flows. People can take their vehicles nearer to this place and park.
Few more places to see in this area are, Death place of Tippu where the body of Tippu was found. Lalmahal Palace (ruins of ancient palace), Thomas Inman's Dungeon and an Obelisk of war memorial are also located nearby. The Jamia Masjid is also situated on the way to these places.

Dariya Daulat Bagh To the other side of the Bangalore-Mysore road, there are few more places which are must to be seen. The first one to be seen is the Dariya Daulat Bagh, one kilometer from main road. This is also known as the Summer palace of Tipu Sultan and was constructed during 1784 A.D. Vehicle parking is available nearer to the place. Entry fees is INR 5 (USD 2 for foreigners). No fee for still cameras and fee INR 25 for video cameras. Inside the palace photography is strictly prohibited (people can carry their cameras along with them). The walls in the palace are painted with war scenes and portraits of various kings. Swords, Canons are exhibited in the palace. There is a beautiful park outside the palace where people can enjoy and relax. Well maintained toilets available. No parking fee for vehicles. Visiting hours is from 9 to 17 Hrs.

Gumbaz Proceeding in the same road, people can visit Gumbaz, 2Kms from Dariya Daulat Bagh. This tomb and Mosque was built by Tipu Sultan as a tribute to his father Hyder Ali. It also consists of cenotaphs of Hyder Ali, Fakr-Un-Nisa (Tipu Sultan's wife) and Tipu Sultan. Cenotaphs of some more relatives can also be seen in this place. This is constructed in a typical islamic architectural style. Parking place is available nearer to the place. Well maintained bath rooms and toilets are also situated here. Entry fees is INR 5 (USD 2 for foreigners). Vehicle parking is INR 20.

Dodda gosai ghat Nearer to Gumbaz, there are few more visiting places which can be seen, the Dodda Gosai Ghat, Sangam and Nimishamba temple. Dariya Daulat, Gumbaz, Gosai ghat and Sangam are located in a place called Ganzaam. Gosai ghat is a picnic spot which is only 2Km from Gumbaz. Sri Kashi Visweswara swamy temple is also located here beside the river Kaveri. Boating facility available. People can travel nearer to this place by their vehicle (parking fees INR 5). The meeting place of rivers Loka Pavani and the bifurcated Kaveri rivers is called Triveni Sangam located one kilometer from Gumbaz. This is a picnic spot, boating facility available. Transportation is possible till this place (parking fee INR 5). People can proceed towards Nimishamba temple (2kms from Gumbaz) located on the banks of river Kaveri. This is a well known temple in southern India for the fact that, people visiting this temple will get their wishes true. Normal way of visiting all these places is to proceed towards Gosai ghat from Dariya Daulat, and come back and proceed towards Gumbaz, and then to Triveni Sangam. After Triveni sangam, come back in the same way and take a right turn after Gumbaz to visit Nimishamba temple.

The Golden Temple ,Amritsar

It is a place of both stupendous beauty and sublime peacefulness. Originally a small lake in the midst of a quiet forest, the site has been a meditation retreat for wandering mendicants and sages since deep antiquity. The Buddha is known to have spent time at this place in contemplation.Two thousand years after Buddha's time, another philosopher-saint came to live and meditate by the peaceful lake. This was Guru Nanak (1469-1539), the founder of the Sikh religion. After the passing away of Guru Nanak, his disciples continued to frequent the site; over the centuries it became the primary sacred shrine of the Sikhs. The lake was enlarged and structurally contained during the leadership of the fourth Sikh Guru (Ram Dass, 1574-1581), and during the leadership of the fifth Guru (Arjan, 1581-1606), the Hari Mandir, or Temple of God was built. From the early 1600s to the mid 1700s the sixth through tenth Sikh Gurus were constantly involved in defending both their religion and their temple against Moslem armies. On numerous occasions the temple was destroyed by the Moslems, and each time was rebuilt more beautifully by the Sikhs. From 1767 onwards, the Sikhs became strong enough militarily to repulse invaders. Peace returned to the Hari Mandir.

The temple's architecture draws on both Hindu and Moslem artistic styles yet represents a unique coevolution of the two. During the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839), Hari Mandir was richly ornamented with marble sculptures, golden gilding, and large quantities of precious stones. Within the sanctuary, on a jewel-studded platform, lies the Adi Grantha, the sacred scripture of the Sikhs. This scripture is a collection of devotional poems, prayers, and hymns composed by the ten Sikh gurus and various Moslem and Hindu saints. Beginning early in the morning and lasting until long past sunset, these hymns are chanted to the exquisite accompaniment of flutes, drums, and stringed instruments. Echoing across the serene lake, this enchantingly beautiful music induces a delicate yet powerful state of trance in the pilgrims strolling leisurely around the marble concourse encircling the pool and temple. An underground spring feeds the sacred lake, and throughout the day and night pilgrims immerse themselves in the water, a symbolic cleansing of the soul rather than an actual bathing of the body. Next to the temple complex are enormous pilgrims' dormitories and dining halls where all persons, irrespective of race, religion, or gender, are lodged and fed for free.

Amritsar, the original name of first the ancient lake, then the temple complex, and still later the surrounding city, means "pool of ambrosial nectar." Looking deeply into the origins of this word amrit, we find that it indicates a drink of the gods, a rare and magical substance that catalyzes euphoric states of consciousness and spiritual enlightenment. With this word we have a very clear example of the spirit, power, or energetic character of a particular place becoming encoded as an ancient geographical place name. The myth is not just a fairy tale. It reveals itself as a coded metaphor if we have the knowledge to read the code: The waters of Amritsar flowing into the lake of the Hari Mandir were long ago - and remain today - a bringer of peacefulness.
