Columbus, Ohio-based band Red Wanting Blue marked a career milestone this past weekend. Known for relentlessly touring the Midwest and independently building a fervent fan base there, the band sold out the 1350 capacity Cleveland House of Blues in advance of its headlining show at the venue last Saturday. Red Wanting Blue has been performing at the club ever since the release of its Pride: The Cold Lover album in 2004 which defined Red Wanting Blue’s current sound. Led by singer-songwriter Scott Terry, Red Wanting Blue’s story is noted as a textbook case of local boys making good. Terry, the sole constant in the band’s 15-years-and-running career, was clearly emotional as he thanked the audience that has been there from the start and also those who are finding the group now that it has begun to become what some have called “America’s local band.”

Unlike so many of today’s indie rock successes, praised by the media before paying their dues, Terry has been working for moments like this since before Mumford had sons. With songs that passionately represent the heart and heartland, Terry and Red Wanting Blue’s performances are addictive because of their authenticity. It’s a state that tours don’t visit and can only be arrived at with a commitment to never breaking up, even if it means never “blowing up.”

Now-a-days, lots of new bands branded as variants of Americana are crawling the country, but few of them have done much crawling underneath their own touring vehicles. Not so with Terry, whose gutted and customized airport shuttle was featured in the band’s “Where You Wanna Go” video. Sometimes tastemakers don’t notice these indicators of credibility though, only hearing what they want to hear.

And while Red Wanting Blue’s sound is polished, it is the presumptions that go along with that attention to detail (not to mention Terry’s booming voice) that have kept some potential fans at bay. The reality is that Red Wanting Blue is actually the realest deal on four wheels and as its story has grown, the band has finally started to gain support and recognition from urbanite editors and programmers that were once apathetic.

For instance, the Columbus, Ohio NPR-affiliated Triple A radio station WCBE, which previously relegated the band’s music to local rotation, this week added the Red Wanting Blue track “Walking Shoes” (LISTEN) to its regular programming. Similarly, the Program Director of Cleveland’s WJCU, who confessed to prematurely making up her mind about the band (“Not gonna like ‘em, and you can’t make me!”) changed her tune, literally, after seeing Red Wanting Blue in concert saying, “I was hooked. Solid hooked. I haven’t seen an audience respond like that since Mumford and Sons.” WJCU is also now playing the band’s “Walking Shoes” in rotation.

The sentiments of the band’s tune “Pour It Out” notwithstanding, Red Wanting Blue does make regular appearances in NYC and other major cities outside of its stronghold (the west coast is on the band’s wish list for 2012), but it always brings Ohio along. Terry adorns his stage with the trinkets found at local thrift stores, end table lamps and weird strings of lights (owls are a favorite) that you will also find in his living room in Columbus. It’s all part of bringing the feeling of home wherever Red Wanting Blue goes.

That feeling was still written on the faces of the 150 or so people who waited in line past 2:00AM to meet Red Wanting Blue after Saturday night’s show. Terry and the guys signed copies of their new album, took pictures, and did what so few rock bands ever do: enjoyed just hanging out with their fans. Based on a history that few artists stick around long enough to make, this attitude will likely never change. Red Wanting Blue’s latest album From The Vanishing Point is out now.

Seattle-based singer-songwriter Robert Deeble premieres two music videos today for songs from his forthcoming new album Heart Like Feathers. The record, Deeble’s first full-length release in six years, is out February 7^th. Heart Like Feathers is also scheduled for release in a deluxe limited edition version that will include a CD of acoustic demos, a DVD with the “Sunflower” and “Eucharist” videos among others, all packaged in a hardcover book bind.

Of the videos and the songs that inspired them, Deeble comments, “An interesting aspect to ‘Sunflower’ is the return of an old friend, Victoria Williams.” Named one of Paste Magazine’s “Top 100 Living Songwriters,” Williams appeared to sing a duet on Deeble’s first album, “So, I found it fitting to invite her back to add vocals to the last song on my latest album,” explains Deeble. He continues, “We recorded in her California home, capturing her amazing spirit on tape and some great video footage, as well. Our director Todd Zeller was able to use this beautifully in his video of the song.”

Of “Eucharist”, Deeble explains that the video features a new mix of the song from the upcoming limited edition of Heart Like Feathers. “In this version we completely recut the guitars to heighten the intensity and dissonant distortion that we felt the song called for.” This recording of “Eucharist” also features ethereal guitar work by Ric Hordinski, a founding member of Americana favorites Over The Rhine.

In addition to Williams and Hordinski, joining Deeble on Heart Like Feathers is Stephen Hodges (drummer with Tom Waits and Mavis Staples), and Anna Lynne Williams of dream-pop band Trespassers William. Heart Like Feathers was produced by Dylan Magierek, founder of Badman Recording Co. (My Morning Jacket, Mark Kozelek, The Innocence Mission) and is scheduled for release on February 7^th via the artist’s own Mind Bomb Publishing in conjunction with Dead Letter Records. The deluxe limited edition version of Heart Like Feathers is scheduled for release in April, 2012.

Unlike so many musicians that become painters, the Los Angeles-based artist Faris McReynolds found success as a fine artist first. Showing his work in galleries before he was even out of art school, McReynolds thought his career path was mapped out for him. He was wrong.

McReynolds, who also makes music as the minimalist avant-garde pop project One Finger Riot, takes a totally different songwriting approach as alter-ego Exdetectives on Take My Forever due February 14^th from the Post Planetary record label.

"I’m paying tribute to the music of my youth,” McReynolds says about the record. “Britpop bands like Blur, Ride, and Elastica, first wave indie rock like Dinosaur, Jr. and also The Beatles which I didn’t hear until after I’d gone through punk. This music is about being straightforward and letting the songs do the work. It’s loose, casual and direct. Hopefully something I didn’t plan for comes out of that approach.”

Take My Forever’s first single “The Lawn” is a droning wash of guitars and live -- as in not programmed -- synthesizers. “I wanted it to be this mass of sound that stays in place all the way through the song. No dynamics, just this wide swirl of textures,” McReynolds says. “It’s got loud distorted guitars, yet it manages to come off as mellow. I’m proud of that because guitars can get old really fast.”

Created in a quick two-week fit of low-budget recording (vocals were tracked in a storage closet), McReynolds plays all of the instruments (save for the drums) on Take My Forever. It’s a radical approach to making a record that bears itself out all the way down to the title itself. As McReynolds states, “The title of the album says, ‘Here, you can fucking have it. Make of it what you will.”
