Jed Zayner was a defender who made 13 appearances for the Black-and-Red in the 2010-2011 MLS season. Zayner recently retired from Major League Soccer is now the director of CUSA in Dayton, Ohio. Having won championships at every level of soccer from High School, multiple championships at Indiana University, seven years in professional soccer including tenure with the San Jose Earthquakes, D.C. United, and Columbus Crew; Jed was a part of the Columbus Championship team and Division leaders with San Jose.

He has spent the first half of 2013 coaching in Cincinnati and now is excited about the new venture in his life. I did a quick saturday shoot for him and quick edit for CUSA as he transitions in a very talented team to train the next generation of Soccer in the USA.

United opened the 2013 MLS season facing the Houston Dynamo, the same team that knocked United out of the playoffs to end their 2012 campaign.

Without Dwayne De Rosario in the lineup, the Black-and-Red opened their season with a loss. No need to worry however, as fans remember from last season, United did not get off to a great start in 2012 but managed to end the clubs four season playoff drought.

Have faith that head coach Ben Olsen will get things figured out once his star play-maker returns after his two game suspension has been served.

United, midfield Nick DeLeon is getting plenty of attention heading into his 'sophomore' season in MLS. DeLeon finished his rookie campaign as MLS Rookie of the Year runner-up after scoring eight goals along with four assists in 28 regular season and four playoff matches.

Yesterday D.C. United picked up former MLS MVP (2002) Carlos Ruiz through the allocation process. The front office of United must believe El Pescadito can still provide some fire power up top according to their statements included in the official D.C. United press release:

“We are pleased to have landed El Pescadito,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. “Carlos is a proven goalscorer who will provide added firepower to our attack, and we look forward to having him on board.”

“I have always like what Carlos has been about,” said D.C. United Head Coach Ben Olsen. “He is a monster of a competitor and hopefully he can take our attack to the next level.”

Since I love stats, here are some stats that I found somewhat unimpressive:
  • In his last 29 MLS games Ruiz has only netted 7 goals,
  • His highest single season goal total was during his rookie/MVP season (24),
  • Ruiz has not scored 10 or more goals in a season since 2007.
Not too sure how Kasper sees El Pescadito as a "proven goalscorer" but what do the fans of united think about the addition of Carlos Ruiz?
