Many visitors enjoy walking between the two waterfalls using the park trails.

Drive to the Lower Falls parking area; it is a short walk from there, less than a mile to reach the waterfalls. You will walk on the rocks to reach a shaded area that has a good view of the waterfalls.

Hiking Trails

McKinney Falls has over 7 miles of hiking trails, including several miles of paved paths suitable for beginners.

1. Onion Creek Hike & Bike Trail

We did this hike on a cloudy summer day. Even though it's humid, most of the trail is shady and runs along a nice path between the trees. You can also see many cacti on the way.

2. Homestead Trail

A short walk that leads to several historic sites, including:

Thomas McKinney's homestead ruins
Historic gristmill
Horse trainer's cabin

History lovers shouldn't miss this trail.

3. Rock Shelter Trail

This trail leads to a prehistoric rock shelter believed to have been used by Native Americans centuries ago.

4. Flint Rock Loop

One of the park's longer hikes features:

5. Lower Falls Trail

My Review:

This is easily another 5-star read for me this year! Then again, that's not too surprising because it's written by Mitch Albom. I've previously read The Time Keeper and Tuesdays with Morrie, and both left a lasting impression on me. Twice continues that tradition with its thought-provoking story and emotional depth.

The story follows Alfie, a man with a remarkable gift: whenever he wants, he can relive a specific moment in his life simply by saying "Twice." Imagine being able to rewind an awkward conversation with your partner, fix a mistake, or make a different choice altogether. It's a fascinating concept, and Mitch Albom explores it in a way that feels both magical and deeply human.

As Alfie starts revisiting moments from his past, the story becomes increasingly layered. There are times when the back-and-forth movement through time can feel a little complex, but the narrative remains engaging and keeps you invested in what happens next.

What did I love?

The concept itself is what drew me in. Who hasn't wondered what they would do if they could get a second chance at certain moments in life?

I also loved how the story unfolds. Albom reveals information gradually, keeping the mystery alive and making each chapter hard to put down. The pacing works well, balancing the emotional moments with the more intriguing aspects of Alfie's gift.

What really stood out to me, though, was the message behind the story. While Alfie can revisit the past, he quickly learns that second chances don't guarantee perfect outcomes. Some things simply cannot be changed. He can't bring back someone who has died, and he can't force someone to love him in exactly the same way as before. Every attempt to alter the past comes with consequences, making the story both moving and thought-provoking.

Overall

Twice is a beautifully written novel that's easy to read yet filled with meaningful ideas. It's a compelling look at human nature, regret, love, and the choices that shape our lives. Most importantly, it's a gentle reminder to appreciate what we have in the present instead of constantly wishing for a different past.

If you enjoy stories that blend a touch of magic with heartfelt life lessons, Twice is definitely worth picking up. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What is the Sphere?

The Sphere is unlike any traditional theater or concert venue.

Instead of a regular movie screen, you're surrounded by a 160,000-square-foot wraparound LED display with stunning 16K resolution. Add in over 167,000 speakers, haptic seats, wind, scents, fog, lighting effects, and environmental simulations, and it feels less like watching a show and more like stepping inside it.

Located just east of the Las Vegas Strip near The Venetian, it's easy to reach by foot, rideshare, or taxi.

This is one of the most memorable shows that we have been to as a family. It is expensive, but the price is worth it for one watch for sure.

The Wizard of Oz at Sphere

The newest headlining attraction is The Wizard of Oz, but don't expect a simple screening of the classic 1939 movie.

Instead, the film has been completely reimagined for Sphere using AI-enhanced visuals and immersive effects while preserving the original performances and soundtrack. The result feels somewhere between a movie, a theme park attraction, and a live experience. (The Washington Post)

Expect to experience:

Massive panoramic visuals surrounding the audience
Seats that vibrate during action sequences
Wind during the famous tornado
Fog and mist effects
Custom scents throughout certain scenes
Flying effects and environmental surprises
Incredible spatial audio that makes every direction feel alive

Our Experience:

I haven't watched the original Wizard of Oz movie before, so it is interesting for me. I loved how the tornado effect is shown and how we felt really getting sucked into the air.

I also loved how the gardens are shown in the movie, the butterflies flying before your eyes, snow falling on you, and the apples falling from the tree. These experiences are wonderful and worth the price.

How long is the show?

The experience lasts about 75 minutes.

There is no intermission, so it's a good idea to use the restroom before taking your seat.

One of the biggest questions everyone asks is:

Where should I sit?

The good news is that there really aren't many bad seats.

Best overall experience

The sweet spot is generally:

Middle of the 300 Level
Sections around 305–307
Middle rows

These seats give you the perfect balance between seeing the entire dome without constantly looking straight up. (Vegas Sidekick)

Budget option

The 400 Level is surprisingly good.

Since the screen wraps around you, being higher actually helps you appreciate the full scale of the visuals.

Seats to avoid

Some seats in the back rows of the 100 Level can have partially obstructed views due to the overhang. Check the seating map before booking.

When Should You Arrive?

This is probably the biggest mistake first-time visitors make.

The Sphere is enormous.

Even after entering, you'll spend time:

Going through security
Finding your section
Walking up multiple levels
Looking around the atrium
Buying snacks or merchandise

Doors usually open 45 minutes before showtime.

I would recommend arriving 45–60 minutes early, especially for evening or weekend shows. (No Cover Vegas)

We arrived around 1 hr ahead. The Sphere changes the themes and colors often, so we took photos admiring the colors and themes.

After we were allowed inside, we explored some interactive exhibits before going to our seats.

Is There Late Seating?

No.

The show starts promptly, and late seating is generally not allowed because it would disrupt the immersive experience.

Is It Motion Sickness Friendly?

Most people are perfectly fine.

However, if you're sensitive to:

motion simulators
VR experiences
IMAX movement
flashing lights

you may experience mild dizziness during certain scenes—especially the tornado.

While weekday morning shows sometimes have availability, weekends, holidays, and evening performances often sell out. Booking ahead also gives you a better chance of choosing your preferred seats.

Tips to Make the Most of Your Visit

✔ Arrive at least 45–60 minutes early.

✔ Visit the atrium before the show—it has interactive displays and great photo opportunities.

✔ Choose the middle 300 Level if it's within your budget.

✔ Wear comfortable shoes since you'll do more walking than expected.

✔ Don't spend the entire show recording videos. Some of the most memorable moments happen when you're simply looking around.

✔ Stay a few minutes after the show, as there are often additional displays and themed experiences in the lobby that many visitors rush past.

Is the Sphere Worth Visiting?

Even if you've never seen The Wizard of Oz, the Sphere is worth experiencing at least once.

The technology alone is unlike anything else currently available. It combines cinema, live entertainment, theme park effects, and immersive storytelling into one unforgettable experience.

If you're only planning to see one paid attraction in Las Vegas beyond the casinos, this is easily one of the best choices. My Review:

This gripping thriller follows a bestselling author whose life is turned upside down when his wife mysteriously disappears. What I Loved

I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling. The narrative is engaging from the very beginning, and the suspense keeps building with every chapter. It was one of those books that was difficult to put down.

The multiple points of view add depth to the story and make the mystery even more compelling. There are plenty of unexpected twists and revelations that keep you guessing until the end. I also loved the atmospheric setting—the island's unpredictable weather, its isolated landscape, and its intriguing residents all contribute to the book's eerie and suspenseful tone.

The pacing felt just right. The story unfolds steadily, revealing clues at the perfect moments without ever feeling rushed. I especially appreciated that the climax felt believable and grounded rather than overly dramatic.

Overall

A fascinating, immersive thriller packed with mystery, secrets, and surprising twists. If you enjoy atmospheric suspense and character-driven mysteries, this is definitely a book worth picking up. It's easy to see why Goodreads readers have been recommending it so highly—it was one of my favorite thriller reads of the year as well.

My Review:

This book is about Mira, who wants to surprise her grandmother with a self-baked cake for the first time. This book is a chapter book for early readers (6 to 8-year-olds) introducing STEM concepts.

It is not only a cute little story of Mira and her relationship with her family, but it is also educational.

What I Loved

I loved the characters first! Mira's dad, who tries to help her by operating the oven and keeping the surprise a secret; and Mira's sister, who helps her understand the measurements needed for baking.

I liked the way the elements related to measurements and fractions are included in the story. So, the book is educational and a good read.

An interesting read for curious kids who love math and baking. It's an introduction to the concept of fractions. Parents will enjoy reading this book to their kids.

My Review:

This novel is set in the beautiful coastal town of Positano, and the story unfolds across two different time periods, cleverly running in parallel while connecting the past and present of the same region.

In the present timeline, we follow Haven, a nautical archaeologist who arrives in Positano to uncover a mysterious treasure discovered by her father during his final dive. While there, she meets Enzo, the charming local dive shop owner, and sparks fly almost instantly. As Haven digs deeper—both literally and figuratively—she stumbles upon intriguing legends surrounding an ancient Amalfi curse and the Streghe people who once lived along the coast.

The second storyline takes us back in time to Marie, a Streghe woman living in Positano, gifted with the extraordinary ability to control ocean currents. Her story adds a mystical layer to the novel and beautifully complements Haven’s journey.

I wouldn’t categorise this as a thriller, but it definitely kept me hooked right until the final page. The way the author weaves together the lives of two women—Haven and Marie—across different eras is done very thoughtfully and keeps the narrative engaging.

The romance in the book is another highlight. There are several touching moments, especially the emotional conversations between Holmes and Marie, which really stood out to me. The character development feels authentic—Haven comes across as real and relatable rather than overly fictional, and Enzo is simply lovable.

I also enjoyed the myths, legends, and beliefs tied to the Amalfi Coast. The folklore adds depth and atmosphere to the story and makes the setting feel alive.

That said, I did expect a bit more from the climax. The ending felt somewhat abrupt, leaving me slightly disappointed after such a well-built journey.

Overall

A fascinating and immersive read with a strong central theme, rich storytelling, and a beautiful setting. Despite the rushed ending, it’s an engaging novel that I thoroughly enjoyed.

My Review:

Ivy is a rich kid, podcaster, and a teen actress. While she is taking a break from her relationship with her boyfriend, Ryan, she is upset when she finds him with another girl. While she is coping with relationship and insecurity issues, she comes across Konrad, who becomes a good friend.

The story is about how she overcame the breakup with Ryan and her insecurities in life.

This is a great young adult book I would recommend for girls. There is a lot of good relationship advice from Ivy's uncle Alfred, which makes sense.

Ivy's character portrays the internal struggles and questions in teen girls' minds. The story also covers the social pressures on young girls. It also covers the impact of popularity and public scrutiny on our lives.

Overall, I loved the cute romance, the characters of Ivy, Alfred, Ivy's dad, etc., and I loved the relationship advice. I love the subtle humor, especially in the conversations of Konrad and Ivy.

It seems a little boring, though, as the whole story is centered around only Ivy and her perspective on things. The narrative might have been still interesting.

This is about a second chance at love, forgetting the past and embracing the present. Even though I am not the target audience for this book, I found it an enjoyable read.

There’s something special about stepping into Old Town San Diego State Historic Park — the place where the story of modern San Diego began.

Colorful streets, historic adobe buildings, lively Mexican restaurants, mariachi music drifting through the air, and charming souvenir shops make this area feel both cultural and festive at the same time. Often called the “birthplace of California,” Old Town blends history with a vibrant atmosphere that makes it one of the most enjoyable places to explore in the city.

We walked through the streets, explored art, crafts, homemade items like candles, pottery, and wonderfully decorated Mexican restaurants.

Walking through Old Town feels like traveling back to the 1800s. Preserved buildings, museums, and courtyards showcase life during the early Mexican and American periods of California history.

The restored adobe homes and old-style storefronts inside Old Town San Diego State Historic Park give visitors a glimpse into how the first settlers once lived. Horse-drawn carriage rides, historical demonstrations, and local artisan shops add even more character to the experience.

One of the highlights of visiting Old Town is simply wandering through the lively streets and soaking in the atmosphere. The area is filled with colorful décor, handcrafted pottery, traditional Mexican art, and small boutiques selling everything from handmade jewelry to authentic souvenirs. Don't you agree?

Street performers and live music often bring extra energy to the neighborhood, especially during weekends and festivals. We are fortunate to watch a dance performance when we visited.

Food is another big reason people love visiting Old Town. The district is known for its authentic Mexican cuisine, fresh tortillas, flavorful tacos, sizzling fajitas, and homemade churros.

My Review:

This story is set in Prague and centers around a book that hasn’t even been published yet—written by Dr. Solomon, Langdon’s friend, who’s deep into researching consciousness and something called Noetics.

Like most Dan Brown novels, it’s a fast-paced, page-turner with a lot of intriguing ideas backed by solid research. That said, it’s a long one—around 660 pages—so be ready for a bit of a commitment.

What I loved:

The theme really stood out to me. I ended up highlighting quite a few lines on my Kindle because the way the book explains human consciousness is both thought-provoking and easy to grasp. It reminded me a lot of ideas from different religions and philosophies.

For example, in Hindu philosophy, there’s the concept of Jeevathma (the individual soul) and Paramathma (the universal soul or God). The ultimate goal is for the Jeevathma to merge with the Paramathma—to attain moksha.

The book touches on ideas like chakras and spiritual awakening, explaining how advanced meditators might experience a kind of universal consciousness and deep peace. Without getting too deep into it, the story explores different ways of opening the mind to higher awareness, which I found fascinating. Overall, the pacing (at least for most of the book) kept me hooked.

What didn’t quite work for me:

Some parts felt a bit hard to believe—especially the way the CIA is portrayed. Their level of power, decision-making, and even the idea of secretly building an advanced underground research facility felt a little far-fetched.

A few characters also felt underdeveloped. Dr. Gessner, for instance, just kind of disappears, leaving you wanting more clarity. The whole “Threshold” research is mostly explained through Langdon and Katherine’s discoveries, which sometimes feels like guesswork. It would’ve been more convincing to hear directly from the people actually behind it, like Finch or Gessner.

There’s also a subplot involving Golem that doesn’t quite blend smoothly with the main story—it feels a bit forced.

And while I don’t mind long books, this one started to drag after the research facility exploded. The ending could’ve been tighter or more engaging.

Overall:
A fascinating read with a strong central theme and lots of thought-provoking ideas—but it could’ve benefited from tighter storytelling and a bit more realism in certain parts.

Books, Music, TV and Bird watching - Gratitude List

Time is just going by in 2026 with my India Trip, MA Kuchipudi classes, AI at work, kids' pickups and drops, dance classes, etc. Interestingly, the first quarter of the year is already over, and I am still reminiscing about our winter vacation days :-) Anyways, time flowing by isn't a concern for me; I enjoy this fast-paced life to some extent.

I just wanted to pop out here on my blog and share my current hobbies and happenings. Usually, I share my gratitude lists in a few categories like books, dance, work, and travel. This time, it is different, though I couldn't skip books altogether. So, let me start with that!

Books

Usually, I set a goal of around 20 books per year, and I can read that many. But for the last 5 years, I chose to slow down in reading to give importance to quality sleep. Thus, I have set a rule not to read before bed.

Does that rule sound weird to you? I have been reading books before bed for many years in my life. It is a wonderful experience reading before we sleep and drift into our dreams, right? However, I realized it might not be good for my sleep. Now, I am treating my sleep like the most treasured part of my life. I blissfully sleep 7 to 8 hrs. That helps me to stay active the whole day.

So, with these strict rules and a busy life, reading 10 books a year has also been tough for me. However, this quarter, I have already completed 10 books.

The Tenant by Katrine Engberg is a 5/5 read, whereas Little Renee of Sunshine is a great book for kids to teach kindness. The Stolen Queen by Fiona Davis and Don't Let Him In by Lisa Jewel are ok.

Music

I haven't been listening to any music lately, but I attended an event where teachers introduced the Band instruments to kids entering middle school. These kinds of events make me emotional. I really appreciate how much time music teachers spend helping kids learn about each instrument and making them try before they join the band next year.

My younger one is also preparing for a competition in music memory, where he has to identify the names of the songs and composers to win the competition. We are both blissfully enjoying listening to the classical music while driving :-) While he prepares, I get to learn about Western music for the first time.

TV

I am a Netflix fan. I love the quality of Netflix series so much that I stopped watching TV altogether when we stopped the subscription. I cannot enjoy any other shows with lower quality. Amazon Prime pales for me and is not even a comparison. We subscribed again this time, and I'm exploring new shows and movies. I am a fan of easy-going comedy series or on-the-edge thrillers/ horror. Yes, both extremes. Cannot handle the middle ground and the average.

I started Bridgeton again, and in the last season. Oh, I love historical fiction as well. Young Sheldon is a light-hearted family show we all love to watch as a family in the evenings. We haven't explored documentaries yet, but Brain Games was our favorite earlier.

Bird-Watching

I never thought I would be interested in just sitting and watching nature! I love Sunrises and the hues of sunsets, though. Thanks to the hubby, many birds regularly visit our backyard. It is very interesting to watch these beautiful, colorful birds. 2 small chirping yellow birds, 1 blue bright one, pigeons, cardinals, and humming birds come regularly. Today we saw a Cooper Hawk for the first time! What a variety!

My Review:

It is a good thriller and a story of a psychopath who could easily charm and cheat multiple women in his life. Even though it's a thriller, after we read 1/4th of the book, we realize who the cheater is. So, it won't be that thrilling from then, but it's interesting to see how he plans to manage extracting money from some, disappearing from the lives of others, and planning for his final retirement.

I enjoyed reading this book as I have with all of Lisa Jewell's novels. The story is engaging and keeps you entertained. But it won't keep you hooked like any on-the-edge thriller. The narrative is good, and shifting between the perspectives of different people made it difficult to predict the next move. The narrative also switches between the past and the present.

I didn't like the characterization that well. The characters of Martha, Ash, and Paddy's old friend all seemed quite interesting. I couldn't understand the sudden shift in Nina's mentality at the end of the book. Amanda's character is unpredictable. It is disappointing that we couldn't understand the strong need of Alistair/Nick to stalk and cheat so many women. It doesn't look convincing at the end.

The book cover is fine, and the title is very apt. The pace is ok, but it gets boring in a few places.

Overall, I won't recommend this book for lovers of On-the-edge thrillers. It is a casual read.

One day at Joshua Tree National Park, CA - Things to do

Joshua Tree National Park is the second most visited National Park in California after Yosemite. This is the first national park that we visited in California. It is located near Palm Springs, California, which is 3 hrs from Los Angeles.

We covered this park on our way to Page, the Grand Canyon, and SanDiego.

How to Reach?

Joshua Tree National Park is 3 hrs away from Los Angeles, San Diego, and Las Vegas. So, it's very accessible.

Where to Stay?

Twentynine Palms is the best place to stay, which is nearer to the Park. But it might be expensive. The towns of Joshua Tree and Palm Springs are other options for staying.

We stayed in Twentynine Palms, and it was around 10 mins away from the Park.

There is an entrance fee of $30; you can also use your Annual National Park pass. The Joshua tree is a succulent variety in the Mojave Desert. It is actually not a tree, but looks iconic with spikes and branches, and it can grow as tall as 40 ft. During Sunset, this tree looks still cool in photos.

Skull Rock:

We entered the park from the North Entrance in Twentynine Palms. We drove through Park Boulevard to reach the Discovery Trail.

Discovery Trail is an easy 0.5 loop that goes around the iconic rock that looks like a skull. The shape is very prominent. But this stop is usually very busy. So, take time to capture a photo without a crowd.

We also did some fun rock scrambling here. You can see many other rocks with different shapes. You can also see Jumbo rocks.

Split Rock is another hike closer to Skull Rock. It is a 2.5-mile loop to Face Rock. We couldn't do this due to a lack of time.

Arch Rock, Heart Rock:

We turned back on Park Boulevard to reach the Twin Tanks parking area on Pinto Basin Road. Arch Rock Trail is just 1.4 mile loop and might take 1 hr. It's an easy walk and a little rock scrambling at the end.

We loved this hike with the kids. The Arch Rock is difficult to capture unless you climb a rock before it to capture it at the correct angle. But it looks huge and beautiful.

Heart Rock is around 0.2 miles away from Arch Rock. Don't miss this at all. We loved this rock in the shape of a heart. It is Instagram-worthy.

Cholla Cactus Garden:

We continued on Pinto Basin Road to reach Cholla Cactus Garden.

This is another popular spot after Skull Rock. It's an easy 0.25-mile loop, which might take 20 mins or less.

Don't miss this!

The Cholla Cactus is a shrub-like cactus, and it is also called 'jumping cacti' as it might detach and cling to nearby people. These are also called 'teddy bear cholla'. Perfectly named, I would say! These cacti really look so cute like teddy bears, ofcourse we cannot hug them 😜

This trail has the largest concentration of these cacti, so we spent a lot of time taking photos.

We had our packed lunch and drove through Park Boulevard.

Keys View:

We took a left at Caprock to reach Keysview. This is the best viewpoint in the entire park. There is a 0.25-mile short paved loop, which is steep to reach view point. It gives breathtaking views of all surrounding areas - the San Andreas Fault, Mount San Jacinto, Mount San Gorgonio, and the Salton Sea.

On the way to Keys View, we saw a large concentration of Joshua Trees. This will be a good drive to do during Sunset.

There are some hiking areas around. Lost Horse Mine Trail is 4 mile out and back trail. The Ryan Mountain hike is the most popular trail, which is 3 miles out and back. It is a challenging trail.

Hidden Valley:

Our last stop was Hidden Valley. The trail is a 1-mile loop around a rock-enclosed valley.

There are some nice trails around this area. Barker Dam is a historic trail with 1.1 mile loop where you can see a water tank built by early cattle ranchers. Wall Street Mill is an easy 2-mile hike to see Wall Street Mill, building ruins, and rusty cars. If you are into history and culture, you will enjoy these 2 hikes.

Other things to do:

Stargazing:

This park is named the International Dark Sky Park. So, your best chance to see the celestial objects at night.

This is the best place to experiment on night time photography. There is an observatory in the park where they conduct skywatching programs.

Off-roading:

If you have a 4x4 vehicle, you can explore the Geology tour road. It is a 18 mile loop dirt road covering some geological history.

We couldn't do stargazing/off-roading. It's for next time.

Hermit Road Scenic Drive: Viewpoints You Shouldn’t Miss

The Hermit Road Scenic Drive is one of the most underrated experiences in Grand Canyon National Park, especially if you want fewer crowds and uninterrupted canyon views. Stretching about 7 miles west of Grand Canyon Village, this scenic route offers some of the most dramatic viewpoints along the South Rim.

From March 1 to November 30, private vehicles are not allowed, and visitors must use the free Hermit Road shuttle or walk/bike along the rim. During the winter months, private vehicles are permitted, making it a peaceful and scenic drive if you’re visiting in the off-season.

What makes Hermit Road special is how different it feels compared to the more popular Desert View Drive—wider canyon vistas, fewer railings, and a raw, untouched feel that truly showcases the scale of the Grand Canyon.

Must-See Viewpoints Along Hermit Scenic Drive

Here are the Hermit Road viewpoints you should not miss, listed in order from east to west:

Trailview Overlook

This is the first stop and a great introduction to Hermit Road. You’ll get a clear view of hikers making their way down the Bright Angel Trail, offering a unique perspective of how steep and massive the canyon really is.

Maricopa Point

One of the best viewpoints for seeing the Colorado River far below, Maricopa Point offers expansive views and dramatic depth. On clear days, the layered rock formations look especially stunning in late afternoon light.

Powell Point

Named after explorer John Wesley Powell, this viewpoint is perfect for wide panoramic shots. It’s also a popular spot for sunrise and sunset, with golden light washing over the canyon walls.

Hopi Point (Do Not Miss!)

If you visit only one viewpoint on Hermit Road, make it Hopi Point. This is widely considered one of the best sunset viewpoints in the entire park. The canyon opens up dramatically here, with sweeping views that stretch endlessly in both directions.

Mohave Point

Just past Hopi Point, Mohave Point offers incredible views of the Colorado River’s sharp bend, making it a favorite for photographers. The canyon feels deeper and more rugged here.

The Abyss

True to its name, this viewpoint provides a sheer drop of nearly 3,000 feet, with no visible river below—just layers and layers of canyon walls. It’s one of the most jaw-dropping perspectives on Hermit Road.

Monument Creek Vista

This stop gives you a glimpse of Monument Creek Canyon, a side canyon that adds depth and texture to the landscape. It’s quieter than most stops and great if you want to linger.

Pima Point

Another fantastic location to spot the Colorado River, Pima Point offers a peaceful atmosphere and wide-open views. It’s especially beautiful during golden hour.

Hermits Rest

The final stop on the scenic drive, Hermits Rest, features a historic stone building designed by Mary Colter. Inside, you’ll find a small snack bar, restrooms, and a rustic fireplace. Just beyond the building is a short walk to viewpoints overlooking Hermit Creek.

We loved the Hopi Point, Hermit's Rest, Maricopa Point, and Powell Point.

To be honest, we felt that most viewpoints of the Desert View scenic drive are similar. We loved the above viewpoints from the Hermit scenic drive better. Also, having fewer crowds is a huge advantage.

On Day 3, we drove through the Desert View scenic drive and covered a few spots for Sunset. The best view was from the Desert View watch tower.

My Review:

This is my second book by Fiona Davis. The Magnolia Palace was great.

This story is about a stolen antique from the Met Museum in Newyork, Charlotte's research in Egypt, her personal life, and many twists and turns.

The story is engaging at least till 75% of the book, and of course, thrilling. The amount of research the author has put into this book is really commendable. I loved reading about the tomb extraction process and the excruciating work of the people who work on those digging expeditions.

I loved the characters of Anne, Billy, Charlotte, and Mark. I was a little disappointed with the ending, though.

The pace of the story is fine in the first part, but it seems to drag later. The second part became boring. I didn't feel it was realistic that all circumstances coincided perfectly to reveal secrets in Charlotte's life so easily. It surprised me that people like Anne, without real skills or knowledge in archeology, could help Charlotte by just accompanying her and being smart and brave.

I wish the story had been crisp and shorter, not dragging at the end.

Our Bright Angel Trail Hike Experience

We started our Bright Angel Trail hike around 9:00 am on a cold winter morning in December, right after breakfast. The temperature hovered around 45°F, and the chill was very real, so we layered up with jackets, gloves, and scarves—something I’d highly recommend if you’re hiking in winter.

Unlike the South Kaibab Trail, which offers dramatic canyon views almost immediately, the Bright Angel Trail feels more gradual and enclosed. You don’t get sweeping views throughout the hike, but there are a few scenic spots that make the descent worthwhile.

The First Tunnel, just 0.4 miles from the trailhead, is a perfect early turnaround point for families and casual hikers, with great photo opportunities. We continued descending through a series of switchbacks and reached the 1.5-Mile Resthouse, which has a basic restroom. Since it was winter, refillable water was not available, so carrying enough was essential. We took a break there, had some snacks, and decided to head back, while my husband continued further down to the 3-Mile Resthouse.

It is a little difficult to see, but we could find the Colorado River while hiking. Many people stay / camp at Phantom Ranch for the night and hike back. That would have been a great experience. Especially in the videos I saw, the views from Plateau Point are extraordinary. Maybe someday, we will do it in the future.

As we made our way back up, the weather started turning—light drizzle and gray skies rolled in—but we were lucky to reach Bright Angel Lodge just in time. The lodge is a wonderful place to warm up, rest, refill water bottles, and use the restrooms.

There’s also a small ice-cream shop next door—nice for a treat, though not as memorable as the fresh, homemade ice creams we’ve had at some other national parks.

Overall, the hike took us about 4 to 5 hours, including breaks, and felt like a rewarding winter adventure despite the changing weather.

We visited the Kolb Art studio after the hike. It was beautiful.

🧳 Packing List for Bright Angel Trail

After the hike, we relaxed at Bright Angel lodge, had lunch, and we drove through Hermit Scenic Drive.

Our Grand Canyon National Park Itinerary - Day 1

Desert View Scenic Drive:

On Day 1, we drove from Page, Arizona, to Grand Canyon National Park. It takes around 2.5 to 3 hrs to reachthe South Rim from Page. It takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hrs to reach the North rim from Page. We visited the Grand Canyon during winter, and so the north rim is closed.

We started around 9 am and reachedthe Grand Canyon South Entrance by 1 pm with a lunch break in the middle. This drive takes us to the East entrance through the Desert View watch tower.

Desert View scenic drive is a 23-mile scenic drive connecting the East entrance and the Grand Canyon Village.

After turning right at Cameron, on the way to the East entrance, you will come across a sign to 'Little Colorado River Gorge Overlook'. It's also a tribal park, and there is an entry fee of $10 per vehicle. I didn't find this overlook that great as the water levels are too low. But, if you want a place to stop for restrooms, it's good.

After you pass the national park entrance sign, there are many viewpoints to stop and enjoy. Don't miss Grand View, Yaki point and Desert View Watchtower. These are great introductions to the park. Other Viewpoints are Lipan Point, Moran Point, and Navajo Point.

I like the view from the Desert View Watchtower. It is free to climb the steps of the watch tower, but there are long queues when we reached around 1 pm. We had to skip that.

Since we had some time before sunset, we decided to hike the popular South Kaibab Trail.

When we visited in December, the entry to the South Kaibab trail is through the orange route shuttle only. No cars are allowed. So, we parked our car at the Grand Canyon South visitor center, got into the free shuttle (Orange route) to the trailhead after packing our backpacks with water and snacks.

South Kaibab Trail:

The South Kaibab Trail is one of the most popular trails. It is steeper and more challenging than the Bright Angel Trail and has better views of the canyon.

These are a few major landmarks:

Ooh Ahh Point – 1.8 miles roundtrip (790 ft elevation change)
Cedar Ridge – 3 miles roundtrip (1,120 ft elevation change)
Skeleton Point – 6 miles roundtrip (2,040 ft elevation change)
The Tipoff – 9 miles roundtrip (3,280 ft elevation change)
Phantom Ranch – 14.6 miles roundtrip (4,700 ft elevation change)

You can hike as much as you can and return. For an average hiker, Ooh ahh point is the best starting point. It takes 1 to 1.5 hrs to reach the ooh ahh point. It takes double the time to climb back.

Be aware of the following:

1. Every hiker needs 1 to 2 gallons of water

2. Hiking poles definitely help

3. Don't underestimate the hike. It takes double the time to reach back when compared to hiking down

4. Carry salty snacks, protein bars, and ensure proper hydration.

5. Hiking down is easy, enjoyable, but hiking up is mandatory and challenging.

We hiked with kids aged 11 and 14 yrs. We did some warmups before attempting and reached the ooh-ahh point in 1 hr itself. Climbing up took almost 1.5 hrs. The total hike is around 1.8 miles round-trip.

The first part of the hike is called the chimney and features many switchbacks. While returning, only that part seemed challenging. We took some breaks in between. Ooh ahh viewpoint is completely worth the effort. It was very windy for us to take good photos, but we enjoyed our first hike in Grand Canyon National Park.

The views were amazing on this hike. They were better than all other hikes in the national park. So, this is a must-do if you want to see the canyon up close.

My husband continued to Cedar ridge which is 3 miles round-trip and a lot of elevation. It is important to train for this hike beforehand. Climbing elevations, training knees, trying knee strengthening exercises, wearing knee pads, using hiking poles etc defenitely will help.

Mule crossings:

Mules also use the same trail to pick trash from Phantom Ranch and come up. We saw mules on the way while returning. They have the right of way. The trails are maintained very well, but the trails have mule shit at many places, which made the hiking experience a bit uncomfortable.

We took the shuttle back to Grand Canyon Village and spent time exploring the visitor center exhibits. The Grand Canyon visitor center has a lot of information about different hikes and the junior ranger badge activities for kids.

Restrooms were clean, but water filling stations were closed in December when we visited. We watched the free movie "We are Grand Canyon", a movie about the different tribes who made this canyon their home and sacred place.

We had an early dinner at Maswik Food Court. This food court looked vintage and had a lot of food options, including vegetarian options.

Thus, we ended day 1 hiking the South Kaibab trail and covering the Desert View scenic drive.

This book is about a young woman, 'Jet', who is dying in the next 7 days due to a serious attack on her. Jet wants to prove herself to others before she dies, so she ventures to investigate her own murder case.

So, the story starts with her investigation, watching videotapes captured from their doorbell camera, enquiring people in the family, neighbourhood, and all others associated with her life. During this process, she reconnects with her childhood best friend, Billy, and they both investigate and uncover many secrets about their families and friends.

The story takes multiple turns and takes unpredictable twists, but will Jet be able to find out her murderer before she dies? That's the remaining story.

What is great?

The writing is funny and engaging. Jet is very funny and responds in an unexpected, honest way when she talks to others.

The characterization and multiple layers of each character are definitely a plus for this novel. The twists and turns are at a different level when compared to other mystery novels. While Jet and Billy learn something new every time they talk to different people, they are unsuccessful until the end in identifying the murderer. The reader keeps on guessing the murderer without much success, either.

What might have been better?

The twists and turns keep us engaging for sure, but some seem fabricated and not real. It felt like the author decided to make it more thrilling and added too many twists. So, from the middle of the book, I was waiting for it to end faster. I got bored at one point in time. I wish the story had been crisp and shorter.

My Review:

This book has 3 stories, which are warm and filled with kindness. These are great stories to read to kids during bedtime. They teach how to process their emotions like when someone teases them/ when they get angry, how to show kindness. The stories are very sweet.

I loved the first story, 'A Recipe for Trouble: The Whispreberry Pie' - It's funny and entertaining throughout. The second one - naming Tree felt lengthy. I think it suits kids more than 6+ yrs. The third one - The Glade of Gentle Hearts is a beautiful story which shows what kindness actually means.

The illustrations are fantastic. I even love the designs on each page. There is a wonderful poem at the end. Also, a game to play with friends.

What is great?

It is great how these stories teach kids how to process emotions and how to show kindness. The illustrations are very well done, and they show the emotions well. The fairies look cute.

What might have been better?

Stories might have been shorter to keep kids aged below 6 yrs engaged.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Grand Canyon National Park (Without the Stress)

The Grand Canyon is one of those places that truly lives up to the hype. Photos don’t do it justice, and standing at the rim for the first time feels unreal—massive layers of red rock carved by the Colorado River over millions of years.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or adding it to a Southwest road trip, this guide will help you plan a smooth, memorable visit to Grand Canyon National Park.

This post is about how to plan the trip and details about the places to see. Will create another post with a detailed itinerary of ours.

Grand Canyon National Park

Located in northern Arizona, Grand Canyon National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited national parks in the U.S. The park is divided mainly into:

South Rim (open year-round, most popular)
North Rim (less crowded, seasonal)

Most first-time visitors stick to the South Rim, which has the classic viewpoints, visitor centers, shuttle buses, and a wide range of hiking options.

Best Time to Visit the Grand Canyon

The best time really depends on what you want out of your trip.

🌸 Spring (March–May)

Mild temperatures

Fewer crowds than summer
Snow may still be present in early spring

☀️ Summer (June–August)

Peak tourist season
Very hot below the rim
Great for early morning hikes
Expect crowds, especially at viewpoints

🍁 Fall (September–November)

One of the best times to visit
Cooler temperatures
Fewer crowds
Stunning lighting for photos

❄️ Winter (December–February)

Snowy and magical
Very few crowds
Some trails may be icy
North Rim is closed

👉 Best overall: Late September to October for comfortable weather and fewer people.

We visited during Christmas break in December. The weather is good, not in extremes, luckily. It was around 40 F.

This worked well for hiking. We started our hikes on South Kaibab and Bright Angel fully protected from cold, including heavy jackets, scarfs and gloves, but the return journey didn't need any of these due to the heat our bodies produced from the hike and climb.

Of course, this time also helped us as there were fewer crowds. I can imagine how busy it would be in the summer.

How to Reach Grand Canyon National Park

🚗 By Car

From Las Vegas: ~4.5 hours
From Phoenix: ~4 hours
From Flagstaff: ~1.5 hours

🚆 By Train

The Grand Canyon Railway runs from Williams, AZ, to the South Rim and is a fun, scenic option.

We flew to LasVegas, and drove to Page. Stayed there for 3 days to cover many beautiful places. Honestly, we enjoyed the Page area more than the Grand Canyon. It is a hidden gem. Here is our travelogue of Page.

As mentioned above, the best place to stay is near the Park or Tusayan. Williams and Flagstaff might be budget-friendly options, but I won't recommend them if you want to spend more time hiking in the Park.

Even during Christmas time, there was more traffic coming to the park from Williams, and it was jammed for a few miles near the entrance.

We stayed in Tusayan at Grand Canyon Hotel and Suites, run by the National Park Service. The hotel is clean and provides free breakfast. It is also very near the park and restaurants.

How Many Days Should You Plan?

1 Day: Quick highlights and viewpoints
2 Days: Ideal for viewpoints + hiking
3 Days: Add longer hikes or a rafting tour

👉 Sweet spot: 2 days for first-time visitors.

While 2 days is the best suggestion, it actually depends on your intent. We did 2 important hikes - Bright Angel Trail and South Kaibab Trail.

Even though I did the hike with kids with a round trip of 3 to 6 miles each, it is hard climbing back regardless of the distance. So, if you want to attempt these 2 hikes with family, I suggest doing it in 2 separate days to avoid overexertion. We spent day 3 and the evenings of previous days to cover viewpoints, watch sunset, and experience the scenic drive - Hermit Road and Desert View Scenic Drive.

Distance: ~1.8 miles round trip
Why: Incredible views right away
Tip: No water on the trail—start early

🌲 Bright Angel Trail (to 1.5 Mile Resthouse)

Distance: ~3 miles round trip
Why: Gradual descent, shaded sections
Facilities: Water (seasonal), restrooms

🚶 Rim Trail

Distance: Up to 13 miles (flat!)
Why: Easy, scenic, shuttle-accessible

⚠️ Remember: Going down is optional, coming back up is mandatory. Pace yourself and carry plenty of water.

My Review:

The Tenant is a great example of a murder mystery thriller. I am not looking forward to reading a crime thriller, but this book was recommended by other bloggers. This book really impressed me.

The story is about two investigators, Jeppe and Annette, solving a murder mystery that becomes too complex with a web of unknown elements. The investigation starts with Julia's murder, but then it progresses to the murder of her friend Kristopher and the abduction of an old lady, Esther.

During the investigation, many characters are introduced. Each character has multiple layers and secrets. The characters of Erik and Christopher are different in their own way.

What is great?

I love the story and twists. The story takes many turns that we don't expect. So, it gets interesting and stays like that till 3/4th of the book.

The characterization is great. The way the author reveals details and family secrets gradually is interesting to read.

What might have been better?

Not much to say about negatives. The reasons for the murder are a little bit implausible, and the relationships of the characters make it more complex.

Overall, a great crime thriller if you are into that genre.

This book is a collection of short stories about the impact of the partition of India and Pakistan on people and their emotions.

The stories are very short and focus on feelings like resistance, hopelessness, and yearning. The partition changed the everyday lives of several people; the stories show subtle differences in their lives and how they cope with it.

After each story, there are a few blank pages. I thought, those are to process our thoughts and journal them or think about similar scenarios in our lives.

What is great?

The raw emotions and subtle changes in mood are portrayed well in each story. The stories linger in our minds and hearts for a few days even after completing the book. They touch your heart. There is also good poetry to read. It is a quick read.

What might have been better?

A few stories are excellent, a few are too short, and some are a few lines. A few are poems, whereas the majority are stories. I didn't like this combination.

I didn't expect just a title with a single line. I didn't like this format.

Start your day early and drive along Valley of Fire Highway, where vibrant red, pink, and orange rock formations greet you instantly. Pull over at viewpoints to soak in the surreal desert scenery.

From the visitor center, drive towards Balancing Rock, Mouse's Tank, and towards White Domes loop. This drive is very scenic. The Canyon narrows down, and the road goes through a lot of ups and downs with beautiful views of red rock formations.

Fire Wave Trail

Distance: 1.5 miles out and back
Difficulty: Easy

One of the park’s most famous hikes, the Fire Wave Trail features stunning swirls of red, white, and pink sandstone that resemble ocean waves frozen in stone.

💡 Tip: Wear sturdy shoes—the rock can be slick.

This seemed like an easy walk, but you need a little rock scrambling. The trail is not clearly marked, but since this is popular, we followed the other hiking groups. A few people also continue on the Seven Wonders loop, which is 1.8 miles.

We hiked to Fire Wave and came back. The formations really stand out like the wave patterns on red rocks. You get good photos if the sunlight is not too bright and if it's a cloudy day.

White Domes Loop Trail

Distance: 1.1 miles loop
Difficulty: Moderate

This trail showcases:

Slot canyons
Colorful rock layers
Remnants of an old Hollywood film set

It’s short but incredibly diverse—don’t skip it!

This is the last point in the scenic drive, and this hike is well worth it.

Rainbow Vista

Drive to Rainbow Vista, one of the park’s most breathtaking viewpoints.

🌈 From here you’ll see:

Multi-colored sandstone ridges
Vast desert landscapes
Panoramic views are perfect for photos

You can stop at this viewpoint while returning from the scenic drive.

Atlatl Rock & Petroglyphs

Next, explore Atlatl Rock, home to ancient petroglyphs carved by Ancestral Puebloans over 2,000 years ago.

Interpretive signs explain the carvings
Fascinating cultural insight into early desert life

On the way to Atlatl Rock, you will find beehive formations. Those are cool as well.

Mouse’s Tank Trail

Distance: 0.75 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy

A flat walk through a rocky canyon leading to Mouse’s Tank, a natural water basin. Along the way, spot more petroglyphs etched into canyon walls.

We skipped this due to a lack of time.

Elephant Rock

Just inside the east entrance, Elephant Rock is a natural sandstone formation shaped like an elephant.

Great quick stop to stretch your legs
Iconic photo opportunity

We covered this while exiting the park and driving towards Page. Not a hike, actually. We can see the rock formation with a 0.2-mile out-and-back trail.
