My Review:

This is the first Japanese novel I've ever read, and I picked it up based on a friend's recommendation. I went in expecting a good murder mystery, and the book definitely delivered!

What's interesting is that we know from the very beginning who committed the murder. The real mystery lies in how a high school mathematics teacher goes to extraordinary lengths to hide the truth and protect the woman he loves. When things don't go as planned, he even considers taking the blame himself.

That's already a fascinating plot, but there's much more to the story than meets the eye. Just when you think you have figured things out, the story takes an unexpected turn.

One small challenge for me was remembering the Japanese names, but since there aren't too many characters, I eventually got used to them by the time I was halfway through the book.

What Did I Love?

I absolutely loved the plot! It's unique, clever, and full of mystery. I especially liked the characters Ishigami, Yasuko, Kusanagi, and Yukawa.

Ishigami's way of building a convincing narrative to mislead the police was fascinating. The way he thinks through every detail and tries to stay one step ahead makes the story even more intriguing.

I also loved Yukawa, both for his brilliant deduction skills and for the friendship he shares with Ishigami. Their relationship adds another interesting layer to the story, especially as Yukawa tries to make sense of what is really happening.

What Could Have Been Better?

While I enjoyed the overall plot, a few incidents didn't feel entirely convincing to me. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but some of Ishigami's actions were difficult for me to understand or justify.

I also felt that the story could have explored Ishigami's feelings for Yasuko a little more. I never quite felt the depth of his love for her, which made some of his decisions harder to connect with emotionally. A few more scenes showing his feelings and the reasons behind his actions might have added greater depth to the story.

Yukawa's character is intriguing, too, but his tendency to speak in riddles can be a little frustrating at times! I also wished there were more insight into Yasuko's inner thoughts and feelings, as I sometimes struggled to understand what was going on in her mind.

And the ending? It's shocking, no doubt about that! However, I felt the story wrapped up rather abruptly, leaving me wishing for a little more time to process everything that had happened.

Overall

Despite a few reservations, this was a fascinating read with a clever plot and plenty of twists to keep me hooked. I particularly enjoyed how the mystery unfolds even though the identity of the murderer is revealed right at the beginning.

I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys murder mysteries, psychological thrillers, and stories that make you think beyond the obvious. If you're looking for a mystery that focuses less on who committed the crime and more on the ingenious ways people try to conceal the truth, this one is worth picking up!

The Ultimate New Mexico Road Trip for Families: 3-Day Itinerary

New Mexico is one of those states where you can experience an incredible variety of landscapes and history within a relatively short road trip. From the brilliant white gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park to the adobe architecture of Santa Fe, the unusual volcanic formations of Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks, the mountains of Albuquerque, and the UFO history of Roswell, there is something for almost everyone.

If you have only 2 or 3 days in New Mexico, you will have to prioritize. I would personally recommend 3 full days if you want to include most of the places on this list.

This itinerary is designed primarily for travelers flying into Albuquerque and renting a car, but it can easily be adapted if you are driving from Texas, Colorado, or Arizona.

How to get there?

For this itinerary, Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is the most convenient airport.

If you are coming from Texas, Colorado, Arizona, or neighboring states, driving is also a great option. New Mexico is particularly well suited for a road trip because many of the attractions are connected by scenic highways.

Tips:

Start early: This itinerary involves quite a bit of driving, especially on the day you visit White Sands and Roswell.
Rent a car: A rental car is almost essential for this itinerary. Public transportation will not work well for visiting White Sands, Tent Rocks, and Roswell.
Check operating days: Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks currently requires reservations and is open Thursday through Monday, with visitors required to enter during the designated morning/early afternoon window and leave by 4 PM. (Bureau of Land Management)
Check weather and closures: White Sands can occasionally close because of missile testing at the neighboring White Sands Missile Range. (National Park Service)

Where to stay?

For a 3-day trip, I wouldn't stay in one place for all three nights.

Instead, I recommend something like:

Night 1 – Albuquerque

Night 2 – Santa Fe or Alamogordo

Night 3 – Roswell or Albuquerque, depending on where you are ending your trip.

If you prefer not to change hotels, Albuquerque is the most practical central base for the northern attractions, but you will have a very long drive to White Sands and Roswell.

Budget-friendly accommodation tips

As I mentioned in my Colorado itinerary, I prefer an Airbnb or vacation rental with a kitchen when traveling with family.

Having breakfast at your accommodation and preparing sandwiches/snacks for the road can save quite a bit of money.

Budget Planning

Now let's go to the itinerary!

Day 1 – Albuquerque + Santa Fe

I recommend starting your trip in Albuquerque and then driving to Santa Fe later in the day.

Morning – National Museum of Nuclear Science & History

If you are interested in science, history, aviation, or the Space Race, this is one of the most interesting museums in Albuquerque.

The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History explores the history of nuclear science, from the Manhattan Project and Atomic Age to nuclear medicine, energy, and modern applications. There is also an outdoor Heritage Park with aircraft, missiles, and other large artifacts. (National Park Service)

Allow approximately 2–3 hours here.

This is also a great attraction for families because it combines history, science, and large outdoor exhibits.

Our family enjoyed visiting this museum. Here is our travelogue on all the beautiful things in and around Albuquerque.

Tip: If your family isn't particularly interested in science or military history, you can skip this and use the extra time elsewhere.

Afternoon – Sandia Peak Tramway

After lunch, head toward the Sandia Mountains.

The Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway takes you several thousand feet above Albuquerque and offers spectacular views of the city and surrounding desert landscape. The tram travels about 2.7 miles to the upper mountain terminal.

Allow about 2 hours for the tram ride, plus time to explore the observation areas and take photos. We drove to the peak as the tram is closed in winter due to high winds.

The temperature at the top can be considerably cooler than Albuquerque, so bring a jacket even if it is warm in the city.

Important: The tram currently operates Wednesday through Monday and is closed Tuesdays for scheduled maintenance, although schedules can change. (Sandia Peak)

Sunset option

If your schedule works, try to be at Sandia Peak around sunset.

The Sandia Mountains are especially beautiful when the rocks take on their characteristic pinkish color in the evening.

Old Authentic Mexican Restaurant

Evening – Drive to Santa Fe

After the tram ride, drive to Santa Fe.

Santa Fe is one of my favorite places to visit in New Mexico because it feels completely different from a typical American city.

Spend the evening walking around:

Santa Fe Plaza
Palace of the Governors
Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi
Canyon Road
Historic downtown
Local shops and galleries

Santa Fe's historic downtown is filled with adobe architecture, restaurants, galleries, museums, and shops.

Loretto Chapel

Dinner

This is a great place to try authentic New Mexican cuisine.

Don't leave New Mexico without trying:

Green chile
Red chile
Enchiladas
Chile rellenos
Sopapillas

Overnight: Santa Fe

Day 2 – Santa Fe + Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks

This will be your scenic and cultural day.

Morning – Explore Santa Fe

Start your morning with breakfast and spend a couple of hours exploring the historic center.

If you have time, visit one of Santa Fe's museums.

The city has more than a dozen museums covering art, history, and culture, including the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.

For a short trip, however, I wouldn't try to visit several museums.

Instead, enjoy the Plaza, adobe architecture, shops, and galleries.

Late Morning / Early Afternoon – Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks

Drive toward Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument.

This is one of the most unusual landscapes in New Mexico.

The monument is famous for its cone-shaped volcanic rock formations, some reaching approximately 90 feet high. (Bureau of Land Management)

Important reservation information

This is something you should plan before your trip.

Kasha-Katuwe currently operates:

Thursday through Monday
Reservation required
Entry between approximately 8 AM and 1 PM
Visitors must leave by 4 PM
Day-use only
$6 per person, including the current reservation fee

There are limited reservations, and there are no on-site/day-of tickets. (Bureau of Land Management)

Also, all visitors must first check in at the Cochiti Visitor Center before proceeding to the monument.

How much time do you need?

Plan on approximately 2–3 hours depending on how much hiking you want to do.

The landscape is especially photogenic, so don't rush this stop.

Afternoon – Start driving south

After Kasha-Katuwe, this is where the itinerary becomes more ambitious.

You have two choices.

Option A – Continue to Alamogordo

If White Sands is your priority, drive south toward Alamogordo and spend the night there.

This makes Day 3 much easier.

Option B – Return to Albuquerque

If you don't want to change hotels, return to Albuquerque.

However, this means Day 3 will involve a very long drive to White Sands and then Roswell, so I strongly prefer Option A.

Overnight: Alamogordo

Day 3 – White Sands National Park + Roswell

This is the most unusual day of the trip!

Morning – White Sands National Park

Start early and head to White Sands National Park.

The first time you see White Sands, it can be difficult to believe that you are still in the United States.

The park protects the world's largest gypsum dunefield, covering approximately 275 square miles.

What to do at White Sands

You don't need to spend the entire day here.

For a short itinerary, I would concentrate on:

Visitor Center
Dunes Drive
Walking on the white dunes
Dune Life Nature Trail
Photography
Sand sledding
Sunset, if your schedule allows

Dunes Drive is an 8-mile scenic drive, or about 16 miles round trip, through the heart of the dunes.

Don't forget a sled!

One of the most fun things to do at White Sands is sledding down the dunes.

You can bring your own sled or purchase one near the park.

And yes, kids usually love this!

How long?

Allow approximately 2–3 hours for a first visit.

White Sands is open year-round, although operating hours vary by season and the park can occasionally close because of missile testing.

Important: Check current park alerts immediately before leaving for the park.

We enjoyed our time at White Sands. Even if it's 2 hrs, it's worth it. Sand is super soft and great for sledding. It is great for photography too. But when the sun is bright, white sands reflects it more and looks even brighter. It's better to wear goggles. When it's windy or too chilly, it becomes challenging with sand blowing on our faces. So, please check the weather before driving.

Afternoon – Drive to Roswell

Now it's time for a completely different experience.

Drive approximately 2½–3 hours toward Roswell.

Roswell is famous around the world because of the alleged 1947 UFO incident.

UFO museum

Whether you are a UFO believer or simply curious, the town has fully embraced its extraterrestrial identity.

You'll find alien-themed signs, green alien statues, UFO souvenirs, and plenty of photo opportunities.

Roswell – International UFO Museum & Research Center

Your main stop should be the International UFO Museum & Research Center.

The museum focuses on the 1947 Roswell Incident and other UFO-related phenomena.

It is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, and admission is currently $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 5–15. (roswellufomuseum)

Allow around 1–1½ hours.

Afterward, walk around Main Street and take some fun alien-themed photographs.

If you have extra time

Visit:

Bottomless Lakes State Park

This unusual state park is about 15 miles southeast of Roswell and contains a chain of lakes that are actually deep sinkholes. (EMNRD)

The park offers:

Hiking
Swimming
Picnic areas
Paddleboarding
Pedal boats
Wildlife viewing

However, I would only add this if you have several extra hours.

What if you only have 2 days?

If you have only two days, I would NOT try to cover everything.

Here are my two preferred options.

Option 1 – Nature-focused 2-day itinerary

Day 1

Albuquerque → Santa Fe → Kasha-Katuwe

Santa Fe Plaza
Historic downtown
Kasha-Katuwe
Overnight Santa Fe/Albuquerque

Day 2

White Sands → Alamogordo → return

This gives you the best combination of culture + spectacular landscapes.

Option 2 – White Sands + UFO Road Trip

If White Sands and Roswell are the reason you're visiting New Mexico:

Day 1

Albuquerque → White Sands

Spend the afternoon at White Sands.

Stay in Alamogordo.

Day 2

Alamogordo → Roswell

Visit:

International UFO Museum
Downtown Roswell
Alien-themed attractions
Bottomless Lakes State Park, if time permits

Then return toward Albuquerque or continue your road trip.

This option is especially fun for families with children.

Bonus places to add if you have extra time

New Mexico has so much more than the places listed above.

🌋 Petroglyph National Monument – Albuquerque

If you have an extra 1–2 hours, this is an excellent addition to Albuquerque.

The monument contains thousands of rock carvings created by Indigenous peoples and Spanish settlers.

Boca Negra Canyon is a particularly convenient option for a short visit.

🏘️ Old Town Albuquerque

If you don't want another long drive, spend some time in Old Town.

It was established in 1706 and today has historic buildings, shops, galleries, restaurants, and the San Felipe de Neri Church.

This is an easy addition to Day 1.

🏜️ Meow Wolf – Santa Fe

If you are traveling with older children or teenagers, consider Meow Wolf's House of Eternal Return.

It is very different from a traditional museum and can be a fun addition to Santa Fe.

If you have 4 days...

A fourth day makes this trip considerably better.

I would do:

Day 1 – Albuquerque

Nuclear Museum → Old Town → Sandia Peak

Day 2 – Santa Fe + Kasha-Katuwe

Santa Fe → Kasha-Katuwe → Santa Fe

Day 3 – White Sands

Drive south → White Sands → Alamogordo

Day 4 – Roswell

Roswell UFO Museum → Bottomless Lakes → continue/return

This gives you much more time to actually enjoy each destination instead of spending most of your vacation behind the wheel.

A few final tips for your New Mexico road trip

Reserve Kasha-Katuwe first. Your entire itinerary may need to be built around the available reservation day. (Bureau of Land Management)
Buy White Sands tickets online if convenient. The park recommends purchasing ahead, particularly because connectivity can be limited. (National Park Service)
Carry plenty of water, especially at White Sands.
Pack sunglasses and sunscreen. The white gypsum reflects a lot of sunlight.
Bring layers for Sandia Peak; temperatures can be 20–30°F cooler than Albuquerque. (Visit Albuquerque)
Don't underestimate the driving distances. New Mexico looks deceptively compact on a map.
Start early. This is especially important on the White Sands/Roswell day.
Check attraction schedules before finalizing your dates. Kasha-Katuwe and the Sandia Peak Tramway both have specific operating days. (Bureau of Land Management)

Final thoughts

New Mexico is one of those destinations where three days will give you a taste, but not the whole experience.

What makes this road trip special is the variety. In just a few days, you can go from the historic adobe streets of Santa Fe, to strange volcanic formations at Kasha-Katuwe, to the surreal white dunes of White Sands, and finally to the UFO capital of Roswell.

If you have a little more time, don't rush it. Add a fourth day and enjoy the drive, the food, and the smaller roadside attractions along the way.

And if you are driving from Texas, this can make an especially good long-weekend road trip!

4 snacks to know more about you

Prompt: 4 snacks to know more about you

I am not sure if this prompt is even relevant to me, as I don't eat snacks often. But that's more reason to write about it. I am particular about my snacks, and here goes my snack story :-)

I am particular about a few things when it comes to snacks.

No fried foods
No tea on an empty stomach
Just fruits alone are not a snack.

Chana chat:

A high-protein snack. Easy for busy moms. I soak it in the morning whenever I remember, then put it in the Instant Pot for 15 mins in the evening in pressure cook mode. I add a little tempering with red chillies, salt, turmeric, chilli powder, jeera, mustard seeds, and curry leaves, and sprinkle lemon juice.

I am particular about not eating this in large quantities, as it feels heavy and might not make me feel hungry for an early dinner. So, portions matter.

Protein Bar:

I am not promoting this product, but I like Rx protein bars. Very good option after an intense exercise. Easy to carry and my go-to snack while travelling.

Lemon bread and chips (my cheat days):

Unhealthy snack option for cheat days or craving days, whatever you call it. A nice lemon-flavoured slice of bread and jalapeño chips :-) It's a quick snack with no preparation. Lemon bread and chips from the HEB grocery store last for a few days.

Cookies and Tea:

Another partially unhealthy option. I always have basic pistachio Good Day brand cookies at home for a quick snack along with ginger tea. I make tea especially with less milk, more water, sugar, a little ginger, and cardamom. That makes digestion easier for early dinners.

I add 2 types of fruit in the evenings, but fruit alone doesn't feel like enough as a snack. This month, we are trying kiwis and Pears. Bananas on an empty stomach don't work well for me, so that's out.

The first place that came to my mind when I read this prompt is Colorado. Our home for 5 years, with a window facing Pikes Peak. This view has become an important part of our lives. The mountains, clouds, and sky change colors and appearance with the season.

If we don't consider the high altitude, dryness, and severe cold for a few months, it's a paradise to live in.

I started my blog when I started working in Chennai as a fresher around 2006, I guess. But if you observe my blog posts and history, there is a huge difference between my posts before and after my Colorado visit and stay. My blog has become more colorful with those lovely Instagram-worthy pics and has been buzzing with travel content from Colorado.

Why I love Colorado?

Mountains:

I am always a mountain person and not a beach person. I love how mountains change in appearance with snow, dark clouds, on summer days, and in the fall season.

They look majestic and remind us that we are small, and our problems are tiny compared to nature and its power. They keep me grounded. They give me hope that we can set high standards in our lives and can really achieve them.

Alpine scenery:

Winding roads, dangerous curves, scenic views, wildlife, and unexpected weather. The joy of being on top of a mountain, enjoying the scenic beauty, is not comparable to any other experience. The fresh breeze on the face and the play of light between clouds are not easy to explain unless experienced by us.

Snow:

The first experience of snow can make any normal person write poetry. The experience is like white little flowers falling from the sky. The blanket of snow the next day after snowfall is as mesmerizing as snow itself. The trees and leaves are heavy with snow, but shining with a new glow. Even adults become kids making snowmen :-) But cleaning the car after snow is not a pleasant experience; I agree :p

Summer afternoons and Rainbows:

At high altitudes, we should never be hiking in the mountains. On hot summer days, weather usually becomes unpredictable. Rains, hail, and sleet are common. The amazing colors of the sky during sunset are a gorgeous experience. Rainbows make a grand appearance often.

Fall colors:

The green leaves turn yellow and then red due to their inability to make chlorophyll at certain cooler temperatures with less sunlight. During fall, it seems like the earth shows off its amazing fashion show.

My pictures never do it justice, and seeing the fall scenery in person is always the best.

My Review:

The story is about Lily, an 8-year-old who had to leave Kyiv for Barcelona unexpectedly. Since she is not mentally prepared for such a sudden move, she feels homesick. I loved the way the story is written in a heartwarming and empathetic way. I like the characters of Lily's parents who answer her questions with patience and love. Sarah seems like a regular teen sister in any family.

The illustrations are great, with nice expressions on the faces. The book title is apt, and the cover looks great and relevant.

Nice story about friendship, emotions, estrangement, and believing in magic.

I like this prompt - A color that describes today

This is about last Saturday. Last week we had Labor Day on Monday and so, a long weekend. I decided to take a real break from my extra duties. Magically, my kids' classes also got cancelled. Our weekly hiking trip got cancelled as well.

Nowhere to rush. No appointments. Time seemed to have frozen a little.

I remember the color peach as it's pastel. Not too bright to attract attention, but light, yet beautiful to look at. Seems like peaceful, and slow, lazy, calm days.

That day has been exactly the same for me. Peaceful, slow, not dominating, just going with the flow.

I woke up late. Cooked a basic yet traditional, homely meal with a daal (lentil dish), vegetable fry, and rice. Watched a nice comedy movie, had some rest at noon, worked on my thesis for a few hrs, and ended the day at the usual time after a simple dinner. Wow.. I miss these simple days now. No kids' classes, no dance classes, no appointments on my phone calendar.

How to plan an Incredible 3-day Colorado Road trip (On a budget!)

Colorado is the 8th largest state geographically in the United States of America, and it has a diverse landscape, including deserts, the Rocky Mountains, and rivers.

How to get there?

Depending on your location, you can either drive to Denver or fly in.

Tips:

Fly on a budget: Search for Thursday night flights if you can take off on Friday. Choose flights with multiple stops or red-eye options to lower the fare.
Booking tricks: Browse flights in your browser's incognito mode, and try to search and book on Wednesdays.
Timing matters: Try to travel in non-peak seasons if your kids are in elementary or young. Fares will be lower if it's not spring, fall, or winter break from school.

Where to stay?

Denver or Colorado Springs is a great base.

Tips:

Accommodation: Try to book an Airbnb with a kitchen, even if it's a little far from the city, and book for all 3 nights. It will save money when compared to hotels, and you can cook home meals on some days.
Rental Car: Try to book your rental car through Costco if you have a membership and regularly check for lower fares. When you get a good price, you can cancel and re-book.

Now that the basics are all sorted out, let's go to the itinerary.

Day 1 - Itinerary:

Morning: Denver to Pikes Peak (2 hrs 10 min)

Pikes Peak Scenic Byway: This 19-mile scenic toll road reaching an elevation of 14,000 ft takes 2 hours if done slowly with multiple stops. Spend at least 30 minutes at the summit before returning down. Please check here for admission hours and fares, and read this post for more details on what to see.

Timing & Food: If you start early from your Airbnb, you can finish the drive by 3 PM. Try to pack a picnic lunch to have at the summit (fresh donuts will also be available at the top!).
Royal Gorge: Royal Gorge Bridge is one of the world's highest suspension bridges, and features a gondola ride and zipline as well. It takes around 2 hours to reach Royal Gorge from Pikes Peak. Read this travelogue for more details.

Dinner: You can have dinner at Manitou Springs while returning to your Airbnb.

Day 2 - Itinerary:

Rocky Mountain National Park:

Getting There: Rocky Mountain National Park is 1.5 hours away (66 miles) from Denver.
Must-Do Highlights: This will be a full-day trip depending on your interest in hiking. The must-do highlights are the scenic drive on Trail Ridge Road (open only from summer through fall) and a hike to Bear Lake and Alberta Falls.

Food: It would be better to pack a picnic lunch. If not, you can get good food at Estes Park or near Grand Lake.
Optional Add-On: If you have one more day, you can do a boat ride on Grand Lake and cover hikes to beautiful alpine lakes and mountain scenery. Follow this travelogue for more details.
Sunset View: If you are traveling in summer and you still have some daylight while returning to Denver, you can visit Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison for sunset.

Dinner: You can have dinner in Denver or Estes Park.

Day 3 - Itinerary:

Considering that this is a half day to leave time to start your return drive or catch a flight, you can cover either the Mt. Blue sky Scenic Byway or Garden of the Gods.

Option A: Mt. Blue Sky Scenic Byway

Location: 40 mins (32 miles) from Denver.
Details: This is the highest paved highway in North America. The Summit is open only from Memorial Day to Labor Day, weather permitting. This road reaches an elevation of 14,130 ft above sea level in just 14 miles from the visitor station. Read this travelogue for more details.

Option B: Garden of the Gods

Location: 1 hr 10 mins away from Denver (67 miles).
Details: If you have been to Utah, I am not sure if you will appreciate it, but Garden of the Gods is a natural landmark and public park in Colorado Springs, famous for its natural rock formations. It is free to enter. Read this travelogue for more details.

4 Best Waterfalls in Northeast Alabama: A Scenic Waterfall Road Trip

When you think about Alabama, waterfalls and dramatic canyon landscapes may not be the first things that come to mind. But head into Northeast Alabama, and you'll find a surprisingly beautiful landscape filled with waterfalls, sandstone cliffs, mountain overlooks, forests, and scenic drives.

On our Alabama road trip, we explored four beautiful natural attractions that are perfect for anyone who enjoys waterfalls and scenic outdoor destinations:

Noccalula Falls, High Falls Park, DeSoto Falls, and Little River Canyon.

Each one has a completely different character. Noccalula Falls is an easy, family-friendly attraction with a large park surrounding the waterfall. High Falls is a smaller, quieter destination with a beautiful natural setting. DeSoto Falls combines a dramatic waterfall with Lookout Mountain scenery, while Little River Canyon offers an entire scenic experience with waterfalls, overlooks, hiking trails, and a spectacular canyon drive.

If you're planning an Alabama waterfall road trip, these four places make an excellent itinerary.

Tip: If you have time, don't rush through Little River Canyon. The canyon itself is as impressive as the waterfall.

1. Noccalula Falls – A Classic Alabama Waterfall

Our first stop was Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden, Alabama.

Located just a couple of miles from downtown Gadsden, Noccalula Falls is one of the most well-known waterfalls in the region. The waterfall is part of a much larger 500-acre park that includes hiking trails, gardens, a pioneer village, animal habitat, picnic areas, and other family attractions.

The waterfall itself drops into a rocky gorge surrounded by greenery, making it an especially photogenic stop.

We went to the campground parking area first, as it has a good view of the falls from the top, and you can also read about the story behind the Princess Noccalula statue.

It is a nice picnic area along the creek.

Then, we proceeded to the main area, took tickets, and waited for our train to start the hike to the bottom of the falls(Gorge Trail). It is a very steep hike, but not dangerous. It is well worth it at the end, watching the falls from below. The gushing water felt refreshing. But Alabama humidity is not easy. We were soaking wet with sweat by the time we returned.

We visited in summer, still water levels are good.

What makes Noccalula Falls special?

Unlike some of the more remote Alabama waterfalls, Noccalula Falls is more than just a waterfall viewpoint.

You can spend several hours exploring the park, walking the trails and discovering historical and natural features.

One of the highlights is the Gorge Trail, which provides access below and behind the falls.

Visit the pioneer village

Noccalula Falls admission and hours

The park's current regular-season admission is $10 for adults and $8 for children ages 4–12 and seniors, with children 3 and under free. The regular park season runs from February through October, with summer extended hours.

Because hours and special-event schedules can change, check the official park website before visiting.

Location: Gadsden, Alabama

Best for: Families, first-time visitors, and travelers who want more than just a waterfall.

2. High Falls Park – A Hidden Gem in Northeast Alabama

If you're looking for a quieter and less commercialized waterfall experience, add High Falls Park to your Northeast Alabama itinerary.

Located near Grove Oak, High Falls is formed by Town Creek. The waterfall is about 35 feet high, and during periods of high water, the falls can spread dramatically across the creek.

One of the most interesting features here is the natural rock bridge below the falls.

A pedestrian bridge also spans Town Creek, offering excellent views of the waterfall and surrounding landscape.

We visited in summer, so water levels were lower. This place is remote, and they follow park closing times seriously. The park closes at 5 pm, and the park guard was running a siren to announce the closure.

We walked to the viewpoint and climbed down on the rocks to see the waterfalls. Since the water level is low, we can even go nearer, but it is a little risky.

We didn't do any trail here, but if water levels are good, there is a trail overlooking the falls and the arch that we would have done.

What to do at High Falls Park

High Falls is a good place to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

You can:

Walk to the waterfall viewpoints
Cross the pedestrian bridge
Explore the natural bridge
Enjoy a picnic
Take photographs
Walk the trails
Enjoy the surrounding scenery

The park is relatively compact, so you don't necessarily need an entire day here.

When is the best time to visit High Falls?

After rainfall is usually the best time to see the waterfall with more water flowing over the rocks.

However, remember that waterfalls and creeks can become dangerous after heavy rain. Don't get too close to fast-moving water or slippery rocks.

Location: 969 County Road 144, Grove Oak, Alabama

Best for: A quieter waterfall stop, photography, and a short scenic visit.

3. DeSoto Falls – One of Alabama's Most Beautiful Waterfalls

Next on our Alabama waterfall road trip is DeSoto Falls, located near Mentone and part of DeSoto State Park.

This is one of the most scenic waterfall destinations in Northeast Alabama and is particularly beautiful because of its setting on Lookout Mountain.

DeSoto Falls is actually a separate section of DeSoto State Park located about seven miles from the main park area.

The falls are created by the West Fork of the Little River, and the historic A. A. Miller Dam is another interesting feature of the area.

How to see DeSoto Falls

There are several ways to experience the falls.

The easiest viewpoint is from the DeSoto Falls Picnic Area, which provides a side view and access to an observation platform.

For a more direct view, you can take the Overlook Trail. The River Trail provides another perspective and is more challenging. Alabama State Parks describes the trails as moderate to strenuous because of the rocky, mountainous terrain.

We reached DeSoto Falls very late in the evening. So, we couldn't hike. Since it's summer, water levels are low, and the waterfall is not that impressive.

The dam area is cool, though, with canyon walls and shallow waters at the dam. The mosaic steps and the path to view point is nice. There are restrooms available.

If water levels are high, it will become a multi-tier waterfall and will look amazing.

DeSoto Falls hiking options

Depending on how much time you have, you can choose between:

Easy:
Walk from the picnic area to the observation platform.

Moderate:
Take the Overlook Trail for a closer/front view.

More challenging:
Take the River Trail toward the basin.

Wear proper hiking shoes, especially if the rocks are wet.

DeSoto Falls parking fee

The current parking fee at the DeSoto Falls Picnic Area is $5 per vehicle. The area is open during daylight hours and closes at dusk.

Parking is limited, particularly on weekends, so arriving early is a good idea.

When is DeSoto Falls at its best?

Water flow depends heavily on rainfall.

According to Alabama State Parks, water levels are generally higher in winter and early spring, while the falls can be much lower or even dry during summer and fall.

Location: Near Mentone, Alabama

Best for: Waterfall photography, hiking, and scenic mountain views.

4. Little River Canyon – More Than Just a Waterfall

If you only have time for one major scenic destination on your Northeast Alabama road trip, Little River Canyon National Preserve should be high on your list.

This is not simply a waterfall stop.

It is an entire landscape of deep canyon walls, sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, forested mountains, and scenic overlooks.

The National Park Service describes Little River Canyon as one of the deepest and most extensive canyon systems in the southeastern United States and the largest canyon in Alabama.

And the best part?

You can experience much of it without doing a strenuous hike.

Little River Falls

Start your visit at Little River Falls, located along Alabama Highway 35.

The waterfall is about 45 feet high and marks the beginning of Little River Canyon. An ADA-accessible boardwalk leads from the parking area to a viewing area.

The amount of water flowing over the falls changes considerably depending on rainfall.

After heavy rain, the falls can be dramatically powerful.

During summer and fall, the river is usually lower, exposing more of the sandstone landscape.

This is our favourite stop on our Alabama road trip. We enjoyed the waterfalls and the scenic drive with several overlooks. This park is well maintained. The path to the overlook is an easy walk with handrails.

There is another hike that leads to the river access, which seemed great. We couldn't do it due to lack of time, but I will definitely recommend it. Many people are relaxing at the top of waterfalls.

Important safety tip

Don't underestimate the water here.

The National Park Service warns that high water can be extremely dangerous. Rocks can be slippery, and fast-moving water can sweep people toward the falls.

Always follow posted safety signs and stay behind designated barriers.

Little River Canyon Scenic Drive

After visiting Little River Falls, don't leave.

The 11-mile Little River Canyon Rim Parkway, also known as Alabama Highway 176, is one of the highlights of the entire trip.

The road follows the canyon rim and provides access to multiple overlooks.

According to the National Park Service, the scenic drive includes eight overlooks with views of the canyon, waterfalls, and surrounding forest.

Eberhart Point
Little River Falls

Take your time and stop at several overlooks rather than simply driving through.

Grace's High Falls

One of the most fascinating sights along the canyon is Grace's High Falls.

At approximately 133 feet, it is the tallest above-ground waterfall in Alabama—but there's an important catch.

It is seasonal.

The waterfall depends on rainfall and may not be flowing during dry periods. The National Park Service recommends checking water flow conditions before your visit.

If you're lucky enough to visit after substantial rainfall, Grace's High Falls can be spectacular.

Hiking at Little River Canyon

If you're traveling with family or don't want a strenuous hike, you can enjoy much of Little River Canyon from the overlooks.

But there are also hiking opportunities for those who want to explore deeper.

The preserve has more than 26 miles of trails, ranging from easier riverside walks to steep and strenuous trails descending toward the canyon floor.

One popular option is the trail to Little Falls, which is approximately 0.75 miles and includes steep stone steps toward the river.

For more adventurous hikers, Eberhart Point provides access toward the canyon floor.

Always check current trail and weather conditions before attempting strenuous hikes.

What is the best time to visit these Alabama waterfalls?

The answer depends on what you're looking for.

🌸 Spring

Spring is one of the best seasons for waterfalls because rainfall generally means better water flow.

It's also a beautiful time for greenery and wildflowers.

☀️ Summer

Summer is great for family road trips, but some waterfalls can have considerably less water.

DeSoto State Park notes that many of its waterfalls and streams can be dry during summer.

🍂 Fall

Fall may be the best overall season for a scenic road trip.

You get waterfalls, cooler temperatures, and colorful foliage—particularly around Little River Canyon and Lookout Mountain.

The National Park Service specifically highlights the canyon's fall colors along the scenic parkway.

❄️ Winter

Winter can be excellent for waterfall photography because water flow is often higher.

The landscape is also much less crowded.

Best Alabama waterfall road trip itinerary

If you want to visit all four attractions, here's an easy way to organize them.

Option 1 – One-day road trip

However, this would be a long day, and you'll have limited time at each destination.

Option 2 – Two-day itinerary

→ Little River Canyon scenic drive
→ Canyon overlooks

I recommend the two-day version if you want to hike, take photographs, and enjoy the scenery instead of simply checking each attraction off a list.

Noccalula Falls: 2–4 hours
High Falls Park: 1–2 hours
DeSoto Falls: 1–3 hours

If you're interested in hiking, photography or picnicking, allow extra time.

Tips for visiting Northeast Alabama waterfalls

1. Check rainfall before your trip

Waterfalls can look completely different depending on recent rainfall.

This is especially important for High Falls, DeSoto Falls, and Grace's High Falls.

2. Wear shoes with good traction

Wet rocks can be extremely slippery.

3. Don't rely completely on GPS

This is particularly important around DeSoto Falls. Alabama State Parks specifically warns that GPS directions can be unreliable and recommends following its written directions.

4. Arrive early on weekends

Parking can fill quickly.

DeSoto Falls has limited parking, and the National Park Service says the Little River Falls parking area can fill by around 11 AM on late-spring and summer weekends.

5. Don't assume a waterfall is safe for swimming

Fast-moving water, slippery rocks, and changing water levels can be dangerous.

Always follow local signs and current park warnings.

6. Bring water and snacks

Some stretches of the scenic drive have limited services.

7. Download maps before you go

Cell service can be inconsistent in some mountainous areas.

Which Alabama waterfall is the best?

That's difficult because each one offers something different.

For families: Noccalula Falls

For a quiet scenic stop: High Falls Park

For a classic waterfall experience: DeSoto Falls

For the best overall scenery: Little River Canyon

For photography: Little River Canyon and DeSoto Falls

For a scenic drive: Little River Canyon

Final thoughts

Northeast Alabama is one of those destinations that can easily surprise you.

What looks like an ordinary Alabama road trip quickly turns into a scenic adventure through waterfalls, forests, sandstone cliffs, mountain roads, and deep canyons.

From the family-friendly trails at Noccalula Falls to the peaceful setting of High Falls Park, the dramatic scenery at DeSoto Falls and the expansive landscape of Little River Canyon, these four destinations make an excellent Northeast Alabama waterfall road trip.

And if you love scenic drives, don't make the mistake of visiting Little River Falls and leaving. The canyon road and overlooks are just as memorable as the waterfall itself.

My Review:

I’ve read a few novels by Paula Hawkins before, and I’ve always enjoyed her writing. So, naturally, I had high expectations for this one—and it definitely lived up to them!

The story revolves around an artist, Vanessa, and her friend Grace, along with the complicated lives they lead and the dark secrets hidden on the isolated Eris Island.

The setting itself is one of the things I found most interesting. Eris is a private island off the Scottish coast that becomes completely cut off from the mainland for about 12 hours a day when the tide comes in. Vanessa, an artist, owns the island and has created a beautiful studio there overlooking the sea. What did I love?

This is a psychological thriller with complex and layered characters. There are quite a few unexpected twists, and the suspense is maintained throughout the book. The narrative keeps you curious and makes you want to keep reading to figure out what really happened.

What I particularly liked was the way Paula Hawkins portrays her characters. Nobody is completely good or completely bad. Each character has their own flaws, motivations, secrets, and darker sides. I really enjoy stories where characters aren't simply divided into heroes and villains, and this book does that very well.

The isolated island setting also adds to the atmosphere. Knowing that the island is inaccessible for several hours every day makes the story feel even more claustrophobic and mysterious.

Overall

The Blue Hour is a beautifully written and engaging psychological thriller. I also loved how fitting the title and book cover are once you get into the story.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers, complicated characters, and stories full of secrets and twists, this is definitely worth picking up.

We did this hike on a cloudy summer day. Even though it's humid, most of the trail is shady and runs along a nice path between the trees. You can also see many cacti on the way.

History lovers shouldn't miss this trail.

3. Rock Shelter Trail

My Review:

This is easily another 5-star read for me this year! Then again, that's not too surprising because it's written by Mitch Albom. I've previously read The Time Keeper and Tuesdays with Morrie, and both left a lasting impression on me. Twice continues that tradition with its thought-provoking story and emotional depth.

The story follows Alfie, a man with a remarkable gift: whenever he wants, he can relive a specific moment in his life simply by saying "Twice." Imagine being able to rewind an awkward conversation with your partner, fix a mistake, or make a different choice altogether. It's a fascinating concept, and Mitch Albom explores it in a way that feels both magical and deeply human.

As Alfie starts revisiting moments from his past, the story becomes increasingly layered. There are times when the back-and-forth movement through time can feel a little complex, but the narrative remains engaging and keeps you invested in what happens next.

What did I love?

The concept itself is what drew me in. Who hasn't wondered what they would do if they could get a second chance at certain moments in life?

I also loved how the story unfolds. Albom reveals information gradually, keeping the mystery alive and making each chapter hard to put down. The pacing works well, balancing the emotional moments with the more intriguing aspects of Alfie's gift.

What really stood out to me, though, was the message behind the story. While Alfie can revisit the past, he quickly learns that second chances don't guarantee perfect outcomes. Some things simply cannot be changed. He can't bring back someone who has died, and he can't force someone to love him in exactly the same way as before. Every attempt to alter the past comes with consequences, making the story both moving and thought-provoking.

Overall

Twice is a beautifully written novel that's easy to read yet filled with meaningful ideas. It's a compelling look at human nature, regret, love, and the choices that shape our lives. Most importantly, it's a gentle reminder to appreciate what we have in the present instead of constantly wishing for a different past.

The Sphere is unlike any traditional theater or concert venue.

Instead of a regular movie screen, you're surrounded by a 160,000-square-foot wraparound LED display with stunning 16K resolution. Add in over 167,000 speakers, haptic seats, wind, scents, fog, lighting effects, and environmental simulations, and it feels less like watching a show and more like stepping inside it.

Located just east of the Las Vegas Strip near The Venetian, it's easy to reach by foot, rideshare, or taxi.

This is one of the most memorable shows that we have been to as a family. It is expensive, but the price is worth it for one watch for sure.

The newest headlining attraction is The Wizard of Oz, but don't expect a simple screening of the classic 1939 movie.

Instead, the film has been completely reimagined for Sphere using AI-enhanced visuals and immersive effects while preserving the original performances and soundtrack. The result feels somewhere between a movie, a theme park attraction, and a live experience. (The Washington Post)

Expect to experience:

Massive panoramic visuals surrounding the audience
Seats that vibrate during action sequences
Wind during the famous tornado
Fog and mist effects
Custom scents throughout certain scenes
Flying effects and environmental surprises
Incredible spatial audio that makes every direction feel alive

Our Experience:

I haven't watched the original Wizard of Oz movie before, so it is interesting for me. I loved how the tornado effect is shown and how we felt really getting sucked into the air.

I also loved how the gardens are shown in the movie, the butterflies flying before your eyes, snow falling on you, and the apples falling from the tree. These experiences are wonderful and worth the price.

How long is the show?

The experience lasts about 75 minutes.

There is no intermission, so it's a good idea to use the restroom before taking your seat.

The 400 Level is surprisingly good.

Since the screen wraps around you, being higher actually helps you appreciate the full scale of the visuals.

Seats to avoid

Some seats in the back rows of the 100 Level can have partially obstructed views due to the overhang. Check the seating map before booking.

When Should You Arrive?

This is probably the biggest mistake first-time visitors make.

The Sphere is enormous.

Even after entering, you'll spend time:

Finding your section
Walking up multiple levels
Looking around the atrium

Doors usually open 45 minutes before showtime.

I would recommend arriving 45–60 minutes early, especially for evening or weekend shows. (No Cover Vegas)

We arrived around 1 hr ahead. The Sphere changes the themes and colors often, so we took photos admiring the colors and themes.

After we were allowed inside, we explored some interactive exhibits before going to our seats.

Is There Late Seating?

No.

The show starts promptly, and late seating is generally not allowed because it would disrupt the immersive experience.

Is It Motion Sickness Friendly?

Most people are perfectly fine.

However, if you're sensitive to:

My Review:

What I Loved

The multiple points of view add depth to the story and make the mystery even more compelling. There are plenty of unexpected twists and revelations that keep you guessing until the end. I also loved the atmospheric setting—the island's unpredictable weather, its isolated landscape, and its intriguing residents all contribute to the book's eerie and suspenseful tone.

The pacing felt just right. The story unfolds steadily, revealing clues at the perfect moments without ever feeling rushed. I especially appreciated that the climax felt believable and grounded rather than overly dramatic.

A fascinating, immersive thriller packed with mystery, secrets, and surprising twists. If you enjoy atmospheric suspense and character-driven mysteries, this is definitely a book worth picking up. My Review:

This book is about Mira, who wants to surprise her grandmother with a self-baked cake for the first time. This book is a chapter book for early readers (6 to 8-year-olds) introducing STEM concepts.

It is not only a cute little story of Mira and her relationship with her family, but it is also educational.

What I Loved

I loved the characters first! Mira's dad, who tries to help her by operating the oven and keeping the surprise a secret; and Mira's sister, who helps her understand the measurements needed for baking.

I liked the way the elements related to measurements and fractions are included in the story. So, the book is educational and a good read.

An interesting read for curious kids who love math and baking. It's an introduction to the concept of fractions. Parents will enjoy reading this book to their kids.

My Review:

This novel is set in the beautiful coastal town of Positano, and the story unfolds across two different time periods, cleverly running in parallel while connecting the past and present of the same region.

In the present timeline, we follow Haven, a nautical archaeologist who arrives in Positano to uncover a mysterious treasure discovered by her father during his final dive. While there, she meets Enzo, the charming local dive shop owner, and sparks fly almost instantly. As Haven digs deeper—both literally and figuratively—she stumbles upon intriguing legends surrounding an ancient Amalfi curse and the Streghe people who once lived along the coast.

The second storyline takes us back in time to Marie, a Streghe woman living in Positano, gifted with the extraordinary ability to control ocean currents. Her story adds a mystical layer to the novel and beautifully complements Haven’s journey.

What I Loved

I wouldn’t categorise this as a thriller, but it definitely kept me hooked right until the final page. The way the author weaves together the lives of two women—Haven and Marie—across different eras is done very thoughtfully and keeps the narrative engaging.

The romance in the book is another highlight. There are several touching moments, especially the emotional conversations between Holmes and Marie, which really stood out to me. The character development feels authentic—Haven comes across as real and relatable rather than overly fictional, and Enzo is simply lovable.

I also enjoyed the myths, legends, and beliefs tied to the Amalfi Coast. The folklore adds depth and atmosphere to the story and makes the setting feel alive.

That said, I did expect a bit more from the climax. The ending felt somewhat abrupt, leaving me slightly disappointed after such a well-built journey.

Overall

A fascinating and immersive read with a strong central theme, rich storytelling, and a beautiful setting. Despite the rushed ending, it’s an engaging novel that I thoroughly enjoyed.

My Review:

Ivy is a rich kid, podcaster, and a teen actress. While she is taking a break from her relationship with her boyfriend, Ryan, she is upset when she finds him with another girl. While she is coping with relationship and insecurity issues, she comes across Konrad, who becomes a good friend.

The story is about how she overcame the breakup with Ryan and her insecurities in life.

This is a great young adult book I would recommend for girls. There is a lot of good relationship advice from Ivy's uncle Alfred, which makes sense.

Ivy's character portrays the internal struggles and questions in teen girls' minds. The story also covers the social pressures on young girls. It also covers the impact of popularity and public scrutiny on our lives.

Overall, I loved the cute romance, the characters of Ivy, Alfred, Ivy's dad, etc., and I loved the relationship advice. I love the subtle humor, especially in the conversations of Konrad and Ivy.

It seems a little boring, though, as the whole story is centered around only Ivy and her perspective on things. The narrative might have been still interesting.

This is about a second chance at love, forgetting the past and embracing the present. Even though I am not the target audience for this book, I found it an enjoyable read.

There’s something special about stepping into Old Town San Diego State Historic Park — the place where the story of modern San Diego began.

Colorful streets, historic adobe buildings, lively Mexican restaurants, mariachi music drifting through the air, and charming souvenir shops make this area feel both cultural and festive at the same time. Often called the “birthplace of California,” Old Town blends history with a vibrant atmosphere that makes it one of the most enjoyable places to explore in the city.

We walked through the streets, explored art, crafts, homemade items like candles, pottery, and wonderfully decorated Mexican restaurants.

Walking through Old Town feels like traveling back to the 1800s. Preserved buildings, museums, and courtyards showcase life during the early Mexican and American periods of California history.

The restored adobe homes and old-style storefronts inside Old Town San Diego State Historic Park give visitors a glimpse into how the first settlers once lived. Horse-drawn carriage rides, historical demonstrations, and local artisan shops add even more character to the experience.

One of the highlights of visiting Old Town is simply wandering through the lively streets and soaking in the atmosphere. The area is filled with colorful décor, handcrafted pottery, traditional Mexican art, and small boutiques selling everything from handmade jewelry to authentic souvenirs. Don't you agree?

Street performers and live music often bring extra energy to the neighborhood, especially during weekends and festivals. We are fortunate to watch a dance performance when we visited.

Food is another big reason people love visiting Old Town. The district is known for its authentic Mexican cuisine, fresh tortillas, flavorful tacos, sizzling fajitas, and homemade churros.

My Review:

This story is set in Prague and centers around a book that hasn’t even been published yet—written by Dr. Solomon, Langdon’s friend, who’s deep into researching consciousness and something called Noetics.

Like most Dan Brown novels, it’s a fast-paced, page-turner with a lot of intriguing ideas backed by solid research. That said, it’s a long one—around 660 pages—so be ready for a bit of a commitment.

What I loved:

The theme really stood out to me. I ended up highlighting quite a few lines on my Kindle because the way the book explains human consciousness is both thought-provoking and easy to grasp. It reminded me a lot of ideas from different religions and philosophies.

For example, in Hindu philosophy, there’s the concept of Jeevathma (the individual soul) and Paramathma (the universal soul or God). The ultimate goal is for the Jeevathma to merge with the Paramathma—to attain moksha.

The book touches on ideas like chakras and spiritual awakening, explaining how advanced meditators might experience a kind of universal consciousness and deep peace. Without getting too deep into it, the story explores different ways of opening the mind to higher awareness, which I found fascinating. Overall, the pacing (at least for most of the book) kept me hooked.

What didn’t quite work for me:

Some parts felt a bit hard to believe—especially the way the CIA is portrayed. Their level of power, decision-making, and even the idea of secretly building an advanced underground research facility felt a little far-fetched.

A few characters also felt underdeveloped. Dr. Gessner, for instance, just kind of disappears, leaving you wanting more clarity. The whole “Threshold” research is mostly explained through Langdon and Katherine’s discoveries, which sometimes feels like guesswork. It would’ve been more convincing to hear directly from the people actually behind it, like Finch or Gessner.

There’s also a subplot involving Golem that doesn’t quite blend smoothly with the main story—it feels a bit forced.

And while I don’t mind long books, this one started to drag after the research facility exploded. The ending could’ve been tighter or more engaging.

Overall:
A fascinating read with a strong central theme and lots of thought-provoking ideas—but it could’ve benefited from tighter storytelling and a bit more realism in certain parts.

Books, Music, TV and Bird watching - Gratitude List

Time is just going by in 2026 with my India Trip, MA Kuchipudi classes, AI at work, kids' pickups and drops, dance classes, etc. Interestingly, the first quarter of the year is already over, and I am still reminiscing about our winter vacation days :-) Anyways, time flowing by isn't a concern for me; I enjoy this fast-paced life to some extent.

I just wanted to pop out here on my blog and share my current hobbies and happenings. Usually, I share my gratitude lists in a few categories like books, dance, work, and travel. This time, it is different, though I couldn't skip books altogether. So, let me start with that!

Books

Usually, I set a goal of around 20 books per year, and I can read that many. But for the last 5 years, I chose to slow down in reading to give importance to quality sleep. Thus, I have set a rule not to read before bed.

Does that rule sound weird to you? I have been reading books before bed for many years in my life. It is a wonderful experience reading before we sleep and drift into our dreams, right? However, I realized it might not be good for my sleep. Now, I am treating my sleep like the most treasured part of my life. I blissfully sleep 7 to 8 hrs. That helps me to stay active the whole day.

So, with these strict rules and a busy life, reading 10 books a year has also been tough for me. However, this quarter, I have already completed 10 books.

The Tenant by Katrine Engberg is a 5/5 read, whereas Little Renee of Sunshine is a great book for kids to teach kindness. The Stolen Queen by Fiona Davis and Don't Let Him In by Lisa Jewel are ok.

Music

I haven't been listening to any music lately, but I attended an event where teachers introduced the Band instruments to kids entering middle school. These kinds of events make me emotional. I really appreciate how much time music teachers spend helping kids learn about each instrument and making them try before they join the band next year.

My younger one is also preparing for a competition in music memory, where he has to identify the names of the songs and composers to win the competition. We are both blissfully enjoying listening to the classical music while driving :-) While he prepares, I get to learn about Western music for the first time.

TV

I am a Netflix fan. I love the quality of Netflix series so much that I stopped watching TV altogether when we stopped the subscription. I cannot enjoy any other shows with lower quality. Amazon Prime pales for me and is not even a comparison. We subscribed again this time, and I'm exploring new shows and movies. I am a fan of easy-going comedy series or on-the-edge thrillers/ horror. Yes, both extremes. Cannot handle the middle ground and the average.

I started Bridgeton again, and in the last season. Oh, I love historical fiction as well. Young Sheldon is a light-hearted family show we all love to watch as a family in the evenings. We haven't explored documentaries yet, but Brain Games was our favorite earlier.

Bird-Watching

I never thought I would be interested in just sitting and watching nature! I love Sunrises and the hues of sunsets, though. Thanks to the hubby, many birds regularly visit our backyard. It is very interesting to watch these beautiful, colorful birds. 2 small chirping yellow birds, 1 blue bright one, pigeons, cardinals, and humming birds come regularly. Today we saw a Cooper Hawk for the first time! What a variety!

Meditation Gardens are a part of the temple premises and are a peaceful oasis with cliffside ocean views, koi ponds, and lush vegetation, designed for meditation. It is free to enter.

Thanks to my friend's suggestion, it is a beautiful place as well, with a variety of plants and great ocean views.

My Review:

It is a good thriller and a story of a psychopath who could easily charm and cheat multiple women in his life. Even though it's a thriller, after we read 1/4th of the book, we realize who the cheater is. So, it won't be that thrilling from then, but it's interesting to see how he plans to manage extracting money from some, disappearing from the lives of others, and planning for his final retirement.

I enjoyed reading this book as I have with all of Lisa Jewell's novels. The story is engaging and keeps you entertained. But it won't keep you hooked like any on-the-edge thriller. The narrative is good, and shifting between the perspectives of different people made it difficult to predict the next move. The narrative also switches between the past and the present.

I didn't like the characterization that well. The characters of Martha, Ash, and Paddy's old friend all seemed quite interesting. I couldn't understand the sudden shift in Nina's mentality at the end of the book. Amanda's character is unpredictable. It is disappointing that we couldn't understand the strong need of Alistair/Nick to stalk and cheat so many women. It doesn't look convincing at the end.

The book cover is fine, and the title is very apt. The pace is ok, but it gets boring in a few places.

Overall, I won't recommend this book for lovers of On-the-edge thrillers. It is a casual read.
