Economic uncertainty, a stagnant economy and tight credit will create an environment where franchisors are going to rely on same store or same franchisee year-over-year increases rather than opening a significant number of new units to drive royalty revenue north of current levels. 2013 will be another bloody year for those franchisors committed to mediocrity. Only operationally excellent brands with strong franchisee validation will see performance gains.

Companies boasting strong unit economics and solid validation have a story to tell and a willing audience of interested would-be franchisees ready to listen. The trick for 2013 is connecting the two. The way prospective franchisees and franchisors connect will continue to evolve in 2013 according to 7 distinct patterns.

Here are the 7 trends to watch:

1. Out with “Lead Generation” and in with “Buyer Generation.” Ask a smart franchisor “How many leads does it take to generate one franchisee?” and they will answer “One…the right one.” The traditional focus on generating large numbers of ‘leads’ for salespeople to sift through is giving way to a focus on what it really takes to engage and recruit the person most likely to buy a franchise. What questions and concerns do they have? What types of information are they seeking? Where do they go online to learn about what you have? Smart franchisors are building content-rich websites and designing content-driven campaigns designed to attract and engage the person most likely to buy rather than trying to be all things to all people.

In our study of franchise buyer behavior on websites, we found that the average franchise buyer spends 50 minutes on a company’s franchise website, looks at 33 pages and spends an average of 90 seconds reading copy on each page. This data completely contradicts yesterday’s wisdom of being stingy with information. Stingy websites may generate more leads, BUT LESS BUYERS.

The lesson for 2013: people who will buy your franchise have an appetite for 50-60 minutes of information. If you don’t give it to them, they move on to other sources and you lose your chance to convert them into a sale. Content marketing for your franchise development efforts is no longer optional, it’s the price to play the game and it takes skill to create an online environment that really engages buyers and breaks down barriers to conversation.

2. Targeted Searches and Online Engagement – Google has issued 21 upgrades to its search algorithm in the past year all focused on one goal: helping people find relevant and recent content during online searches. Smart franchisors have adapted.

They understand all the various ways candidates will search for them online and take proactive steps to own the first search page for each key question or key search phrase.

Google is giving priority to those smart franchise brands that have deeper and more structured content on websites and who publish articles that relate to what people are searching for. Google’s goal is to find and rank content people want to read (not just skim). If you have more robust content on your franchise opportunity site, you’ll be rewarded not just by higher rankings, but with higher franchise candidate engagement. Most smart franchisors will be redesigning their websites in 2013 and 2014 with more content, a deeper franchise opportunity research funnel, more video, integrated franchise blogs and a well-crafted and relevant story.

Hairstylists at the Fantastic Sams in Midlothian,Texas will be hosting a Coloring for the Cure event on January 20. The fundraiser will benefit manager Rosalyn White of the Waxachachie salon who was recently diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.

Marvin Babcock fell in love with flying while he was still in college. A friend invited him along for a ride in a small plane. "He let me hold the controls -- I just got hooked. I went home and told my wife, 'I want to be a pilot'." Three days later, he enrolled in flight training.

Since 1998, Babcock has been a pilot for United Airlines. "On a beautiful day droning on between Newark and L.A. and you're four hours into it, it's just a job," he said. On the other hand, "To this day I still enjoy the thrill of taking off and landing a big jet. That never gets old, never becomes routine."

After the decline in the airline industry following September 11, 2001, Babcock decided he needed to diversify. After doing some reading, he decided that a franchise might be the best business opportunity. "Although franchises are expensive, the odds of success in a franchise are much higher because I didn't have business experience. The franchise provides support, name recognition and a customer base," he said.

Fantastic Sams opens in Downtown Chaska

Fantastic Sams is opened a new salon in downtown Chaska on Friday, Dec. 7.

The new Fantastic Sams, located at 810 N. Walnut St. (near Sarpino's) is owned by John and Patti Prichard, who now own 26 Fantastic Sams salons throughout the state.

“We are thrilled to contribute to Fantastic Sams’ phenomenal growth throughout the state and are proud to be part of the largest full-service value chain in the region,” said John Prichard, in a press release. “We look forward to contributing to the Chaska community year-round with affordable hair care for the entire family through our two new salons.”

The salon will be open seven days a week: Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bob was born and raised in upstate New York and holds a degree in Liberal Arts. In addition, he’s had advanced schooling in accounting and management. He worked for a textiles manufacturing company in the Albany area for 16 years and worked his way up to become Executive Vice President. He’s a regional owner of 13 Fantastic Sams salons and personally owns 3 in Colony (NY), Scotia (NY) and Amsterdam (NY).

How did you learn about the brand?

I was searching for various concepts while looking for a new opportunity. My wife, Cathleen, and I worked with a business broker and it was my wife who discovered Fantastic Sams. We did our research and felt this was a good opportunity for us.

What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system?

It gives us enough structure and the Fantastic Sams business model allows us autonomy with our business combined with the backing and buying power of a national brand.

What makes your business different?

We’ve had successful stores in the area and our employees allow us to really stand out. We treat our staff well because we want to make sure they’re at the top of their field and we always strive to give our customers the best experience.

How do you connect with the local community through your business?

We’ve been able to do a lot of work over the years. We’ve done work with muscular dystrophy organizations, various walks for diabetes, and Coats for Kids among others.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?

We had a difficult time when we initially started. The concept wasn’t as receptive as we hoped when we first entered this region and it took us a few years to figure out our identity within the community. We stuck with it and it has all worked out for the best.

What are your expansion or development plans?

We’re looking to have 2 or 3 more stores open within the next year. Our territory could hold another 5 units in this market.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?

We own quite a bit of property and we do a lot of gardening; it’s very rural where we live so we love to be outside!

Stacey Rogers took over the Arcade Fantastic Sams hair salon in 1992 when she was only 20 years old after attending cosmetology school during her junior and senior year of high school. She was looking to find a way to go in to business and after working at Fantastic Sams loved the opportunity that it provided for her future. Stacey has operated her hair salon for 20 years and still loves every minute of it.

What did you do before franchising with Fantastic Sams?

I grew up in a very small town, in which I still live, and during high school I really wanted to find a career path that could eventually lead to owning my own business. One of the things I noticed growing up was how computers and technology started replacing many jobs in the area, so I knew that it had to be something that couldn’t be replaced by changing technology.

Cosmetology offered me an irreplaceable option and a career path I knew would never decline, which is how I got started in this business. Since opening the salon 20 years ago, I have owned three other businesses, another Fantastic Sams, a tanning salon and a Subway restaurant but sold them a few years ago.

How did you first learn about the brand?

I first started at Fantastic Sams when I was 19 as a stylist right after I graduated from cosmetology school. Actually, my first paycheck ever was from Fantastic Sams. The salon first opened in 1985 and by the time I started there, they already had a steady client base and it was very well known in the community. Fantastic Sams is the only franchise brand in our community and I think that has helped give us an edge over our competition over the years.

Why did you decide to open your own business?

Ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted to own my own business. Growing up in a small town in Western New York, there weren’t a lot of business owners in my community but it was definitely something that I was interested in.

One of the things that I noticed was the number of people who were laid off due to technological advances and I never wanted to go in to business where my job was put on the line or that my position could be eliminated because of technology. After purchasing my first salon in 1992, I became very interested in business ownership and opened a new business every three to five years including another Fantastic Sams salon, a tanning salon and Subway. I decided to continue running my Arcade salon location after selling the other three because it has been my baby and has done very well for me over the years.

What makes your salon different?

One of the biggest things that sets us apart from competitors is the franchise brand and system. Because we are in a small town, there are a lot of independently owned hair salons but nothing that carries the weight of Fantastic Sams and that has really helped us succeed. We offer our customers consistency, affordability and really specialize in styles for the entire family. We also have a full-service salon which is beneficial for many customers and our retention rates are extremely high for our stylists. Having familiar faces in our salon and being able to train them in the newest styles and coloring techniques keep guests coming in the door.

What have been some of your biggest achievements as a salon owner?

A few of our biggest successes in my nearly 20 years owning the salon are to have the second highest sales and the highest product sales in the entire region. Our goal is to have the highest average sales in the region, which is a completely attainable goal for our girls. We are also up 12 percent over the first quarter of 2011 and are continuing to stay busy. The salon has been relatively recession resistant because of our affordable price point for families and some of the unique marketing campaigns that we have run locally.

When a new customer comes in to the salon, we recognize the new business potential and are proud to have highly educated and trained stylists that are very good at keeping customers. In fact, we even have some of the original customers that started coming to Fantastic Sams in 1985 that are still with us today.
