Book two of T. A. Barron’s latest series dealing with Merlin is to be released this September. Merlin’s Dragon: Doomraga’s Revenge is set somewhere between the Lost Years of Merlin and the Great Tree of Avalon series.

No longer just an unknown little lizard, Basil is now as big as a mountain—and the most powerful dragon of all times. His majestic wings, gigantic tail, and jewel-bright eyes fill the sky as he and the great wizard Merlin, loyal friends and courageous defenders of Avalon, strive boldly to save their world.

Mr. Barron also assures everyone that the film adaptation of The Lost Years of Merlin is still happening, albeit at the glacial pace of the movie industry. Details are still scarce, save for the fact that Paramount is developing it.

Bloomsbury Publishing is staving-off plagiarism charges from the estate of one Adrian Jacobs, a little-known supposed fantasy author who created The Adventures of Willy the Wizard No. 1 Livid Land, a 1987 novella of 36 pages which had a very limited distribution.

The suit claims that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire infringes upon Willy the Wizard due to both books having “wizards traveling on trains and a magical competition featuring a challenge involving a hostage situation.” The late author’s lawyers also allege that he had been in contact with literary agent Christopher Little, who later worked with J. K. Rowling to bring Harry Potter to publication.

“The central character of Willy the Wizard is not a young wizard, and the book does not revolve around a wizard school,” the publisher declared, as well as they had not heard of Jacobs or his work until the suit was filed.

This isn’t the first time that someone has made plagarism allegations against the Harry Potter franchise, and it is likely that this case is no more credible.

The manuscript for Lord Sunday, the final book in the seven-part The Keys to the Kingdom series, by Garth Nix, has been delivered to the publisher (Scholastic Press). Nix recently updated his website to reflect this.

There is no final publication date as of yet, though it “right now looks likely to be early-ish in 2010.” The editing process is just beginning, and will likely take some time, and after which there will of course be other things to be done before the book goes to print.

Nix says that he hopes “that the first two chapters or so will be put up online in the next few months, to ease a little of the pain of the cliffhanger at the end of SUPERIOR SATURDAY.”

Hopefully the author will be able to start work on his next book in the Sabriel series in the near future, now that The Keys to the Kingdom is almost out of the way.

The BBC’s Merlin series, which follows the story of a young Merlin under the rule of king Uther Pendragon, will be airing in the United States on NBC starting June 21, 2009 (Sunday night).

Oft-described as the United Kingdom’s Smallville, the program has gained quite a following during its first season.

The show is set in Camelot, where Merlin meets Uther’s son Arthur, who is about the same age. (Other characters, such as Morgana and Guinivere are part of the story as well.) Merlin must prevent mishap after mishap while subtly preparing Arthur to be the prophesied king…all without revealing his powers to Camelot, with its ban on all things magic.

A new website, MerlinSite.com, run by the same group behind the leading Smallville fan site, will cover all the news about the show. We will tip you off here of anything major, if it comes to our attention.

Bloodhound is the second book in Tamora Pierce’s trilogy centered around Beka Cooper, an ancestor of George Cooper’s (the Rogue from Pierce’s earlier Alanna series). Sequel to Terrier, Bloodhound continues the story of Beka’s life as one of the Provost’s Guard, Tortall’s police, also known as the Dogs.

In Bloodhound, counterfeit coins are flooding Corus, Tortall’s capital, devaluing the silver and pushing prices up. The Provost’s Guard tries to keep the scale of the problem secret to prevent panic, and the counterfeits are traced back to Port Caynn. Beka is sent there with Clara Goodwin, after another Dog in their group was disabled during a riot, to investigate the counterfeits. There, they soon realize the size of the operation…

Bloodhound is a worthy addition to the Beka Cooper series, though the wait between it and the previous book was a bit excessive. It stands well on its own, but you get more out of it if you read the first book before starting Bloodhound.

Inkdeath is the conclusion to the “Inkworld Trilogy,” in which Inkheart is the first book. The installments have become progressively darker, and the latest certainly is no exception. Unlike the first book, it doesn’t have many parts that seem to crawl by. The pace isn’t quick, but it’s set at a fairly moderate pace.

The book is, like its predecessor Inkspell, set in the Inkworld rather than in the contemporary like Inkheart. The Adderhead is virtually immortal, but sick, after the climax of the previous book, and he will stop at nothing to find the traitorous bookbinder-slash-robber Bluejay (who much resembles Robin Hood).

The Adderhead is out to get the Bluejay and Meggie, and the less-than-pleasant Orpheus is still trying to rewrite Fenoglio’s story out from under the author of the world, causing no end of trouble. There surely is plenty going on, and things come to an agreeable end.

Oh, and Dustfinger returns, more powerful than ever…
