Google has come up with a cool tool to help teachers improve their students writing skills.

You can divide the class into groups and give each group a writing assignment. All the members of the group can share a Google Doc. Whatever corrections they make and changes they arrive at will be saved. They can see their draft taking shape write from the first draft to the last.

This is a very good chance for helping our students revise and polish their draft. Writing experts have always advocated peer editing as a way of improving writing skills.

Students pay little attention to teachers' corrections after the essay is completed. And writing can improve if students get feedback during the process rather than after the final draft is ready.

Google also offers a PDF report that suggests how to revise your writing and improve your papers.

You can also become a member of ELTechs Association - you can share ideas with other teachers and get answers for your questions.

If you look at this Squidoo Lens Free Online Courses you will find other sites where teachers can submit their teaching courses.

Google For Educators has great resources for classroom use.

You and your students can benefit from using Google tools in the classroom. More importantly your students will be prepared for functioning effectively in the internet dominated world of the 21st century.

Google has a teacher's guide for using Google in the Google For Educators section.

Teachers can get ideas for using Google tools in the classroom, they can join discussion groups and sign up for Google newsletter.

Google has also started a blog for educators called Infinite Thinking Machine Blog.

Google says, "While you’re here, you can sign up for the quarterly Google for Educators newsletter, as well as check out the latest from The Infinite Thinking Machine, a Google-sponsored, WestEd-produced blog for educators, by educators. I am glad you are asking these questions Dhruti. Many of us are teaching without understanding the purpose behind out actions. I think the main aim of teaching grammar is to aid the natural second language acquisition process. If our students had good natural exposure to the target language in class, they would learn the grammar of that language too, incidentally.

But there are limitations in a classroom situation. The pressure of examinations, covering the syllabus (!!) etc. etc. take up most of our time and we are not able to help the students develop language competence naturally in a tension free manner. And then some of us try to make the situation worse by giving grammar rules and explanations.

Teaching grammar can be useful if

- natural exposure to the language is provided to initiate a discussion on a grammar point

- students are given a chance to interact with the exposure and discover the underlying pattern for themselves

- Teacher and Student interact with each other in a natural manner, incidentally using that grammar item.

- Students get to work in pairs and groups to use grammar-based communicative activies in a relaxed manner.

- Students get to work on individual worksheets with LSRW skills integrated with that grammar component.

- Teacher gives feedback to the students in a variety of ways (definitely not circling wrong patterns in red alone)- repeat the correct form as part of her reply to the student, let them watch a video / TV prog. pause naturally at a certain point and focus their attention on the usage, tell a story and find a way to repeat that aspect of language etc.

Teaching Poetry

ELTECS, Teachers' Association, has received a questions from a teacher about teaching poetry in the eighth grade.

This inspired me to make this post.

The teaching of poetry, I think should not begin and end with combing a poem for examination purposes. A poetry class can be a thoroughly enriching and stimulating experience for both the teacher and the learners.

I still receive messages from students who have turned into budding poets. The overall experience of working with different poems has inspired them to create their own poems.

The multimedia presentation offers some techniques, tips and tricks for teachers and learners to enjoy the whole experience.

Once you enjoy the poems, the techniques will surrender to you. If you catch hold of only the techniques of teaching, you might kill the spirit of the poems.

I think you already have enough information about learning theories. What you need to do now is to think of how these theories are useful for us to learn a language. (as you rightly say "theories is useful in your own learning of English"}
