I have a fascination with all sorts of people movers and in this case it is a plane that Boeing flew in the 40’s, the 314. There were 12 of these planes built and not a single one exists today. Boeing scrapped or sunk all of them. I can’t even begin to imagine flying in one of these, but it must have been amazing! A round trip to Hong Kong would set you back about the equivalent of $20 grand in today’s dollars, but still ….

If you don’t know about Dropbox, you should really give it a look. It can become an invaluable asset the first time you need it. In short Dropbox is an online storage system that syncs with as many computers or devices that you want to install it on, and with it’s web interface. You can also share the contents of any or all of your folders with anyone else.

I use it in my work as a digital asset manager and all around tech guru @ Chase Jarvis Inc to store a whole bunch of handy files and folders that I may need when we are out on location.

It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally I need to work from a computer that is not my own. So I sit down to work and quickly realize that all sorts of tools that I need are not installed or available. It’s easy enough to grab a copy of Transmit [my favorite FTP app] or install an Aperture trial from Apple’s servers but what about all of my settings, my presets, my preferences?

That’s where Dropbox comes in. I can go to the dropbox site, or install the widget and suddenly I have a bunch of folders at my disposal … on my Dropbox, I keep a plethora of handy things. I actually set the preferences on my Studio Mac of Transmit, Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, InDesign, and Coda [a bomb coding app] to write to the dropbox folder on that mac. Then anytime I make any changes or additions to those preferences and settings they are automatically synced to every other computer in my sphere. This means I have;

All of my various FTP addresses and passwords [and there are plenty]

All of my Aperture presets. Including Metadata and import tagging.

All of my presents & preferences & workspace settings for Photoshop, Final Cut, and Lightroom.

In addition I also keep;

An empty Aperture library there so that I can copy it down to a local drive and have all of the folder structure and everything laid out just how I like it.

A folder full of our most used fonts. [This has saved my butt a buch of time when we have been off the grid, but needed to mock up some ads for a client]

A folder full of Compressor codecs.

And not to be under estimated a copy of my current 100 favorite tunes.

So that’s what’s on my Dropbox for those that wanted to know … and for those that already have and love Dropbox? What are you keeping on there? Work? Just personal? A little of both?

Comment here … and if you have any questions ask them over @ formspring
