ฮีโร่นั่งรอผม

สำหรับคนอ่านที่เป็นห่วงฮีโร่ ผมมีข่าวดีมาบอก

โรงเรียนเฉพาะทางที่อโศก ซึ่งเขาเคยเรียนอยู่ประมาณแปดเดือนในปีก่อน ก่อนที่พ่อแม่จะถอนเขาออกเพราะเรื่องเงิน ตัดสินใจรับเขากลับเข้าเรียน

แอนโทรหาครูที่โรงเรียน หลังจากทางโรงเรียนเคยโทรหาเธอมาก่อน

เธอบอกข่าวนี้กับเราสองสามวันหลังจากผมกลับมา

เธอได้รับแจ้งว่าตอนนี้รัฐช่วยออกค่าเล่าเรียนเพื่อช่วยพ่อแม่ที่มีลูกเป็นออทิสติก

เดือนนี้ป้าคนหนึ่งยังพาฮีโร่กับแม่ไปพัทยาแบบไปเช้าเย็นกลับเพื่อเล่นริมทะเลด้วย

เขายังได้ไปชายหาดกับญาติ ๆ ที่บางแสนด้วย

“เราใส่เสื้อชูชีพให้เขา แล้วเขาก็เล่นน้ำทะเลอยู่นานมากโดยไม่กลัวเลย”

ฮีโร่ที่โรงเรียน

การกลับเข้าไปใช้ชีวิตในโรงเรียนอีกครั้งน่าจะทำให้ฮีโร่ได้รับการช่วยเหลือจากผู้เชี่ยวชาญเพื่อพัฒนาทักษะต่าง ๆ และได้มีเพื่อนวัยเดียวกัน

ตอนนี้ชีวิตของเขาเงียบเกินไป ราวกับว่าโลกทั้งใบลืมเขาไปแล้ว

แม่ของเขาทำหน้าที่ผู้ดูแลหลักของครอบครัวได้อย่างน่าชื่นชม แต่ผมสงสัยว่าเธอเริ่มรู้สึกหรือยังว่างานนี้เกินกำลังของเธอ

“ฉันมีปัญหาในการสอนบางอย่างให้เขา”

ผมสงสัยว่าเธอไม่ได้ตรวจดูเขามาหลายชั่วโมงแล้ว และตอนนั้นเกือบบ่ายสองโมง

โดยปกติเธอดูใส่ใจเขาดี เธอมักอาบน้ำให้เขาก่อนปล่อยออกมาเล่นข้างนอก แม้บางครั้งเขาจะแอบหนีออกจากบ้านและวิ่งลงตรอกไปเล่นเอง

แอนคงกังวลว่าฝรั่งคนนี้ซึ่งมาพร้อมค่านิยมแบบโลกที่หนึ่งกำลังตัดสินเธออยู่

แต่หน้าที่ของผมไม่ใช่ทำให้ชีวิตของเธอยุ่งยากขึ้น

ผมแค่อยากร่วมเดินทางไปด้วยกันและช่วยแบ่งเบาภาระของเธอเท่าที่ทำได้

ถ้าผมมีอะไรที่อยากพูดจริง ๆ ผมก็ลองคุยกับตุ๊กก่อนเสมอ แล้วให้เธอช่วยถ่ายทอดความกังวลของผม

พ่อของเขาเดินไปเดินมาในบ้าน สูบบุหรี่และจมอยู่กับความคิดของตัวเอง

แต่ตอนนี้ผมชินแล้ว

ทุกวันมีเรื่องใหม่ ๆ และผมคงเขียนเรื่องนี้ต่อไปได้ไม่มีวันจบ

วันนี้ตอนฮีโร่แอบออกมาหาผม แม่ของเขาเดินตามออกมาจากตรอกเพื่อพาเขากลับบ้านไปอาบน้ำ

หลังจากเราวิ่งขึ้นลงถนนในโหมดนักบินด้วยกัน 20 นาที เขาก็ยืนอยู่ตรงหน้าผม รอให้ผมอุ้ม

เมื่ออยู่ในอ้อมแขนผม เขายื่นมือไปหาแม่ แล้วดึงเราสามคนเข้าหากัน

ผม ฮีโร่ในอ้อมแขน และแม่ของเขา

เขาทำแบบนี้หลายครั้ง ราวกับกำลังพยายามส่งข้อความว่าเขาอยากให้เราสามคนมาอยู่ด้วยกัน

“เขาอยากให้เราคบกัน”

ผมบอกแอนอย่างเจ้าเล่ห์นิด ๆ

“แม่ว่าเขาแค่อยากให้เราเล่นด้วยกัน”

แม่ของเขาตอบ ดึงผมกลับลงมาสู่โลกแห่งความจริง

ออทิสซึมยังมีเรื่องลึกลับอีกมากมาย

ผมมักสงสัยว่าฮีโร่ยังมีอะไรอีกมากแค่ไหนที่รอให้เราเห็น เมื่อเขาได้รับความช่วยเหลือที่สมควรได้รับ

เวลาจะเป็นคนตอบ เมื่อเขากลับเข้าโรงเรียนและได้รับการดูแลกับการรักษาที่ต้องการ แม้ว่าพัฒนาการอาจค่อย ๆ เกิดขึ้นทีละน้อยมากกว่าจะเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็ว

เขาเป็นเด็กที่มุ่งมั่นอยู่แล้ว และรู้ว่าอะไรทำให้ตัวเองมีความสุข

ผมรู้สึกเหมือนเรากำลังพยายามทำความเข้าใจว่าเขาต้องการอะไร ไม่ใช่เพียงเพราะหน้าที่การดูแลบังคับให้เราทำ แต่เพราะมันเป็นสิ่งที่คนเราทำกัน

แต่ถ้าผมสามารถมองเข้าไปในหัวของเขาได้ เขาอาจพูดว่า

“ไม่ต้องห่วง เล่นกันเถอะ”

อีกมุมหนึ่งของทางเข้าบ้านแอน

ผมหายหน้าไปสามวัน หวังว่าพอกลับมาเรื่องทั้งหมดคงคลี่คลายไปแล้ว

ไม่เลย

เมื่อผมไปเยี่ยมครั้งต่อไป ผมพบว่าเด็กยังเดินไปมาในเสื้อผ้าที่เปียกฉี่อยู่

เพื่อน ๆ รอให้ผมทำหน้าที่ของตัวเอง แต่หลายคนแสดงความเป็นห่วงที่ผมหายไปเสียจนผมให้อภัยพวกเขา

เหตุการณ์ค่อย ๆ คลี่ออกมาเป็นชั้น ๆ พร้อมสีสันแบบไทย ๆ ที่ผมชอบ

ตุ๊ก (ซึ่งชอบเรียกตัวเองว่า แม่ และ ผมว่า ลูก)

“ปกติถ้าลูกยุ่ง ลูกจะบอกแม่ ทุกคนถามถึงลูกหมดเลย ทั้งแอด พ่อของฮีโร่ สามีแม่ เบนซ์ (ลูกสาวที่เคยมาขอเงินซื้ออาหาร) แม้แต่ฟรายเดย์ (เด็กออทิสติกอีกคน) ก็อยากรู้ว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้นกับลูก

“แม่บอกไปว่าแม่ไม่รู้ว่าลูกหายไปไหน”

เธอกระซิบบอกผมว่าแอน แม่ของฮีโร่ ถามว่าเธอทำให้ผมโกรธหรือเปล่าที่มาขอให้ผมจ่ายค่าแพมเพิร์สให้ลูก

“แม่ไม่คิดอย่างนี้หรอก”

ตุ๊กบอก

“เพราะลูกเป็นคนใจดี”

ป๋อง สามีของตุ๊กเดินมาถึงและส่งยิ้มกว้างจนเห็นฟันที่หลอและหักระเกะระกะให้ผม

เบนซ์ ซึ่งผมพบว่านั่งอยู่ที่โต๊ะขายขนมของแม่ โทรหาเพื่อนคนหนึ่งแล้วคุยภาษาจีนกลางเสียงดัง เธอเก่งเรื่องภาษา

ขณะเดียวกัน ตุ๊กโทรหาแอนเพื่อบอกว่าผมกลับมาแล้ว

“เอาเงินมาด้วยหรือเปล่า?”

เธอถาม ราวกับเพิ่งนึกขึ้นได้

เธอคุยกับสามีของแอนก่อน ซึ่งเห็นได้ชัดว่าเขารู้เรื่องที่ขอเงินค่าแพมเพิร์สอยู่แล้ว

ผมยังสงสัยว่าแอดจงใจไม่ให้เงินไว้หรือเปล่า โดยคิดว่าในที่สุดผมคงเข้ามาช่วย

หรือบางทีเขาอาจแค่ไม่มีเงินจริง ๆ

หลังจากแอนเดินออกมาบนถนนพร้อมโทรศัพท์ ผมกลับบ้านชั่วครู่เพื่อไปเอาเงินส่วนที่เหลือที่จำเป็น

เมื่อมีเงินอยู่ในมือ เธอก็สั่งแพมเพิร์สทางออนไลน์

ฮีโร่ในกางเกงขาสั้นเปียกฉี่ดูดีใจที่ได้เห็นผมอีกครั้ง และกลับมานั่งเล่นบนตักผม

“ช่วงสองสามวันที่ผ่านมานี้เขาซนมาก”

แอนพูด เหมือนจะบอกเป็นนัยว่าเขาจะงอแงเมื่อผมไม่อยู่

เบนซ์เสริมว่า

“ฮีโร่คิดว่าเขาเจอคนที่คล้ายกับตัวเองในตัวไมเคิล เขาพูดไม่หยุดอยู่ข้างหูไมเคิล แต่ไม่ค่อยสนใจจะคุยกับคนอื่น”

ความรู้สึกห่างเหินที่มีอยู่ก่อนหน้านั้นหายไป และผมรู้สึกเหมือนได้รับการต้อนรับกลับเข้าสู่อ้อมกอดอุ่น ๆ ของครอบครัวไทยขยายใหม่ของผม

ต่อมา ผมไปกับแอนที่ร้านตัดผมริมถนนเพื่อให้ฮีโร่ตัดผม

เขานั่งอยู่เฉย ๆ อย่างว่าง่าย ไม่งอแง

ระหว่างรอ แอนเปิดรูปฮีโร่กับพี่น้องของเขาในโทรศัพท์ให้ผมดู เป็นรูปที่ถ่ายตอนเด็ก ๆ

ผมเคยเห็นพี่ชายกับพี่สาวของเขา ทั้งคู่ยังเรียนอยู่ที่โรงเรียนมัธยมแถวนี้เอง

และหน้าตาดีเหมือนน้องชาย

แอนตอบคำถามของช่างตัดผมเกี่ยวกับอาการของฮีโร่ ขณะที่เขานั่งให้โกนผม

เธอบอกว่าเริ่มสังเกตเห็นพัฒนาการที่ผิดปกติเมื่อเขาอายุประมาณ 18 เดือน

แต่เธอไม่ได้พาเขาไปหาหมอ และโทษตัวเองที่ปล่อยให้อาการลุกลามมาจนถึงตอนนี้

ฝั่งตรงข้ามมีโรงเรียนประถมอยู่พอดี แต่ไม่ใช่ทุกครอบครัวในละแวกนี้ที่จะสนับสนุนโรงเรียนแห่งนี้

พ่อแม่คนหนึ่งเคยบอกผม

เธอส่งลูกไปโรงเรียนวัดแทน

โรงเรียนประถมบอกแอนว่าพร้อมรับฮีโร่เป็นนักเรียน แต่ต้องรอจนกว่าเขาจะสามารถดูแลตัวเองได้ก่อน

ผมบอกแอนว่าข้อแลกเปลี่ยนที่ผมต้องการนั้นง่ายมาก

ผมอยากเห็นฮีโร่ทุกวัน

ผมคิดว่ามันสำคัญที่เราจะได้อยู่ด้วยกัน

“แม่จะพาฮีโร่ออกมาเล่นกับคุณเมื่อไหร่ก็ได้”

แอนรับปากก่อนที่ผมจะออกจากร้านตัดผมกลับบ้าน

ผมถามแอนว่าเธอคิดไหมว่าความรักที่ผมมีต่อลูกชายของเธอนั้นมากผิดปกติ

“คนไทยเรียกมันว่า เอ็นดู”

เธอตอบ พยายามทำให้ผมสบายใจ

แอนรู้ว่าผมมีนิสัยคิดมากเกินไป

คืนนั้นเมื่อกลับมานั่งอยู่บ้านกับแฟน ผมมองมือที่เริ่มแก่ของตัวเอง แล้วคิดถึงฮีโร่

บางครั้งหลังจากปล้ำเล่นกันพักใหญ่ เราก็แค่นั่งจับมือกัน

ผมคิดว่า

“ผมเหลือเวลาไม่มากแล้ว แต่ผมอยากมอบเวลาที่เหลือให้ลูก”

ทำไมผมถึงใช้เวลานานขนาดนี้กว่าจะมาถึงจุดนี้ในชีวิต?

ย้อนกลับไปดูกรุงเทพฯ เมื่อ 20 ปีก่อน

บล็อกแรกที่ผมเขียนในเมืองไทยชื่อ Bangkok of the Mind ก่อนจะเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น BOTM2 ในเวลาต่อมา

ยี่สิบปีหลังจากโพสต์แรก บล็อกนี้ยังคงอยู่บนโลกออนไลน์ เป็นเหมือนเศษซากทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่บันทึกเรื่องราวการผจญภัยในอดีตของผม อีกทั้งยังเปิดโอกาสให้คนอ่านได้เห็นกรุงเทพฯ รวมถึงฝั่งธนบุรีของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ในแบบที่ผมรู้จักเมื่อครั้งนั้น ซึ่งเป็นเวลาราวห้าปีหลังจากที่ผมเพิ่งเดินทางมาเมืองไทย

จนถึงทุกวันนี้ BOTM2 ยังมีคนเข้ามาอ่านวันละกว่าพันคน ทั้งที่ผมแทบไม่ได้ประชาสัมพันธ์ และนาน ๆ ครั้งถึงจะเขียนอะไรเพิ่มสักที ซึ่งทำให้ผมประหลาดใจไม่น้อย

เพื่อฉลองครบรอบ 20 ปี ผมจึงตั้งใจนำเรื่องเด่น ๆ จากบล็อกกลับมาเผยแพร่ที่นี่อีกครั้ง คราวนี้เป็นภาษาไทย พร้อมภาพประกอบชุดใหม่ที่จะช่วยถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวการผจญภัยเหล่านั้น ส่วนต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษยังคงอ่านได้ตามเดิม

ผมจะแบ่งเรื่องต่าง ๆ มาลงเป็นชุด ๆ โดยให้น้อง GPT ช่วยแปล ก่อนจะเข้าสู่กระบวนการตรวจแก้แบบเข้มข้นตามธรรมเนียมของเรา คือเขาแปล ผมให้ความเห็น เราช่วยกันขัดเกลาร่างแปล แล้วสุดท้ายก็ตกลงกันให้ได้ แม้บางครั้งอาจต้องยอมรับว่าเรายังเห็นต่างกันอยู่บ้าง

หวังว่าคุณจะเพลิดเพลินกับเรื่องเหล่านี้ ซึ่งจะพาย้อนกลับไปสัมผัสเมืองไทยในวันวานที่ชีวิตยังดำเนินไปอย่างเนิบช้ากว่า ก่อนที่ระบบขนส่งสมัยใหม่ โซเชียลมีเดีย และล่าสุดคือ AI จะเข้ามาเร่งจังหวะชีวิต พร้อมเปลี่ยนโฉมเมืองและผู้คนไปอย่างไม่หวนกลับ

(ฮีโร่กับน้องฟรายเดย์)

ฮีโร่เป็นเด็กที่ไม่พูด ไม่ได้เรียนหนังสือ และอย่างน้อยในตอนนี้ไม่ได้รับการช่วยเหลือเฉพาะทางเรื่องออทิสติก แม้ยังต้องการความช่วยเหลือในหลายเรื่องของชีวิตประจำวัน

สถานการณ์ของเขาต่างจากเด็กออทิสติกอีกคนที่อยู่ลงไปตามถนนอย่างสิ้นเชิง

เด็กคนนั้นชื่อฟรายเดย์ อายุไล่เลี่ยกับฮีโร่ พูดได้คล่อง เรียนได้ดี ไปทำกายภาพหรือบำบัด และกินยา

ที่น่าทึ่งคือ เด็กสองคนนี้อยู่ห่างกันไม่ถึง 100 เมตร

พ่อแม่ของฟรายเดย์เริ่มช่วยเรื่องการพูดของเขาตั้งแต่ยังเล็ก เขาจึงพูดเก่งพอ ๆ กับเด็กวัยเดียวกันทั่วไป

ตุ๊ก ซึ่งมองเด็กทั้งสองคนเหมือนลูกชายอีกสองคน บอกว่าเธอเองก็เคยช่วยสอนให้ฟรายเดย์พูด

เขามีน้องชายชื่อเจเจ และทั้งสองคนจะลงมาที่แผงของตุ๊กเพื่อกินขนมน้ำแข็งไส

ผมเคยเล่าเรื่องเพื่อน ๆ บนถนนเชื้อเพลิงให้ร็อบ ฝรั่งที่อยู่คอนโดเดียวกับผมและอาศัยอยู่กรุงเทพฯ มานานฟัง

ร็อบเป็นชาวอังกฤษ อดีตทหาร มีลูกโตแล้วสามคนซึ่งอาศัยอยู่ต่างประเทศ

เขาทำงานเป็นวิศวกรในกรุงเทพฯ และอยู่กับภรรยาชาวไทยและสุนัขสองตัว

เรามักเจอกันที่ยิมเก่า ๆ ของคอนโด

ร็อบเล่าเรื่องสมัยเป็นทหารและวัยเด็กที่เล่นรักบี้ ซึ่งกระจายอยู่ระหว่างอังกฤษ ไอร์แลนด์ และนิวยอร์ก

ส่วนผมก็เล่าเรื่องของเพื่อน ๆ ในชุมชนใกล้บ้านให้เขาฟัง ซึ่งไม่ได้หรูหราเท่าเรื่องของเขาเท่าไร

เมื่อผมบอกว่าผมไปสนิทกับกลุ่มคนไทยฝั่งตรงข้ามถนน และภายในไม่กี่สัปดาห์ก็ถูกกดดันให้ช่วยจ่ายค่าใช้จ่ายต่าง ๆ ให้พวกเขา ร็อบก็หัวเราะ

สระว่ายน้ำคอนโดของผมที่มองเห็นอยู่ลิบ ๆ

“คุณนี่ไม่เคยเรียนรู้เลยใช่ไหม?” เขาพูด

ผมเคยเห็นร็อบพาหมาเดินแถวปากซอยของผม ขณะที่ผมนั่งอยู่กับเพื่อนตรงจุดประจำบนถนนเชื้อเพลิง

ผมไม่เรียกร็อบขณะที่เขาเดินเล่นกับพุดเดิ้ลฝรั่งเศสของเขา เพราะถ้าเรียก เขาอาจเดินเข้ามานั่งด้วยและทำลายมนตร์สะกดที่กำลังครอบงำผมอยู่

เวลาผมมีเพื่อนเป็นคนไทย ผมมักจะเข้าไปคลุกคลีในชีวิตของพวกเขาเต็มตัว และหอบปัญหาของพวกเขากลับบ้านไปด้วย

เมื่อก่อนเรื่องนี้ทำให้แฟนผมหงุดหงิดจนแทบเป็นบ้า

ผมยังไม่ได้เล่าเรื่องการผจญภัยบนถนนเชื้อเพลิงให้เขาฟัง แม้เขาจะรู้ว่าผมออกไปเล่นกับเด็ก ๆ ที่นั่น

แฟนผมชื่อไม่อยู่ไม่สนใจเรื่องพวกนี้ และไม่มีทางคิดจะเข้าไปในพื้นที่ลำบากแบบนั้น แต่ก็อย่างว่า เขาเป็นคนไทยชนชั้นกลางที่มีเหตุผล

จากจุดที่ผมนั่งข้างตุ๊ก ผมยังมองเห็นแนวตึกคอนโดของตัวเองได้

ช่วงหลายเดือนที่ผ่านมา ผมข้ามถนนจากซอยของตัวเองมาหาตุ๊กหลายครั้ง เพราะความต้องการมีเพื่อนนอกบ้านของผมเป็นแรงผลัก

ผมเดินข้ามถนนสองเลนตรงข้ามทางเข้าซอย แล้วจูงจักรยานผ่านช่องว่างใต้ทางด่วนเฉลิมมหานคร ซึ่งแอดชายหน้าตากร้าน ๆ นั่งอยู่บนเก้าอี้พักผ่อน จากนั้นก็ข้ามถนนอีกสองเลนที่วิ่งสวนทาง

แค่นั้นเอง

โลกหนึ่งไปสู่อีกโลกหนึ่ง

จากแผงของตุ๊ก ท่ามกลางฝุ่นที่รถบรรทุกพัดขึ้นมา ผมมองเห็นแนวสระว่ายน้ำของคอนโดตัวเองผ่านช่องว่างใต้ทางด่วน

และจากสระว่ายน้ำเอง ซึ่งผมออกกำลังวันละสองครั้ง ผมก็มองเห็นร่มเก่า ๆ ของตุ๊กริมถนนด้านล่าง

ถ้าร่มกางอยู่ ผมก็รู้ว่าเธอนั่งอยู่ตรงนั้นรอลูกค้า

ตรอกที่นำไปสู่บ้านของแอน

วันละสองครั้ง ฮีโร่จะแอบออกมาจากตรอกข้าง ๆ ตอนที่แม่ไม่ทันมอง แล้วเดินเท้าเปล่าออกมาวิ่งเล่นจนแม่ออกมาตามกลับบ้าน

เวลาวิ่ง เขาจะก้มศีรษะลงแล้วเงยขึ้น เหมือนเครื่องบิน

ผมจินตนาการว่าเขาเป็นนักบินที่กำลังบินเดี่ยว

สิ่งเดียวที่ขาดไปก็คือผ้าคลุมซูเปอร์ฮีโร่แบบที่เด็ก ๆ แถวนี้ชอบใส่

บางครั้งเขาหยุดเพื่อกินขนมหรือดื่มน้ำ ซึ่งมักเป็นของที่เด็กในละแวกนั้นยื่นให้ และเด็ก ๆ ก็ยินดีแบ่งให้เขา

มิตรภาพของเราเริ่มต้นขึ้นในวันหนึ่งเมื่อฮีโร่เดินเข้ามาหาผม

ตุ๊กเป็นคนยุให้ผมจับเขานั่งบนตัก และผมก็ประหลาดใจที่พบว่าเขาชอบ

ก่อนหน้านั้นผมแทบไม่เคยเห็นเขาเข้าหาผู้ใหญ่ด้วยตัวเองเลย

“เขาถูกชะตากับคุณจริง ๆ”

ตุ๊กบอก เธอมองฮีโร่เหมือนลูกชายอีกคน

“รับไปเลี้ยงเลยสิ”

ฮีโร่ ยิ้มๆ

เธอพูดอย่างกระตือรือร้น

ตุ๊กเป็นเพื่อนที่ดีในละแวกนั้น เพราะเธอคอยกันวัยรุ่นที่บางครั้งมองผมเป็นแหล่งเงินค่าขนมออกไปอย่างนุ่มนวล

เมื่อวัยรุ่นเห็นผมนั่งอยู่ที่แผงของเธอ ซึ่งเป็นที่นั่งประจำของผมในซอย พวกเขาจะหยุดแล้วขอเงิน

“มะลิไม่มีเงินเยอะหรอก ช่วยไม่ได้”

บางคนก็ยอมกลับไป แต่บางคนยังตื๊อต่อ แม้ส่วนใหญ่จะขอไม่เกิน 20 บาท

เขาไม่มีงานทำ และคนแถวนี้บอกว่าเขาเสพยา

เขาไม่ได้สร้างปัญหาอะไร แต่ชอบขอเงิน รวมถึงวันหนึ่งที่ผมกำลังอุ้มฮีโร่อยู่

ผมเอื้อมมือเข้าไปหยิบกระเป๋าสตางค์ในเป้ไม่ได้ แต่เขาก็ยังยืนรอจนกว่ามือผมจะว่าง

ไอ้ห่าเอ๊ย

ผมคิด

ตุ๊กสามารถพูดอะไรสักอย่างเพื่อไล่ไนท์ไปได้ แต่วันนั้นเธอกลับเงียบ

เธอมักถามผมว่าถ้าเด็ก ๆ ในละแวกนั้นมาขอขนมน้ำแข็งไส ผมอยากจ่ายให้พวกเขาหรือไม่

แบบนั้นทุกคนก็กลับไปอย่างมีความสุข เธอคิดอย่างนี้ และผมก็ได้เพื่อนใหม่ด้วย

เพราะต่อให้ขึ้นไปอยู่บนสะพานเตรียมจะกระโดด ชีวิตประจำวันก็ยังเป็นชีวิตประจำวันอยู่ดี
คนอื่นก็ยังมีเรื่องของตัวเองต้องจัดการ
และสมชายก็เหมือนกัน

He had expected more activity.
Perhaps the police would come over.
Perhaps somebody would climb towards him.
Perhaps there would be shouting.
He had seen these things on television.
Instead, there were people arguing.
He couldn't hear everything.
He could hear his wife's voice.
That was never a good sign.
The cold was becoming annoying.
He had brought the sweater.
The sweater was in the bag.
The problem was putting it on.
He would have to move.
He didn't want to move.
If he lost his balance, that would be very embarrassing.
He wasn't ready yet.
He looked at the crowd.
Nobody was looking up.
He wondered whether he should shout.
No.
That would look desperate.
He could wait.
A policeman eventually came closer.
"Somchai."
"What?"
"Want another sandwich?"
Somchai stared at him.
"Another?"
"Yes."
"Where from?"
"Same place."
"How much?"
"I don't know."
Somchai thought this over.
"Maybe."
The policeman nodded.
"OK."
And walked away.
Somchai was disappointed.
That was it?
He had expected more.
He had imagined somebody crawling over to him.
A policeman on all fours.
That would be something.
He might even make the news.
Instead the policeman had asked him if he wanted another sandwich.
He looked down again.
There was now a rescue van.
He hadn't called them.
How had they got there so quickly?
Then he saw another van.
And another.
"Bloody hell," he said.

"You're in our area."
"We got the call."
"Who called you?"
"We heard it on the police radio."
"Well, the police called us. We're here for the jumper."
"So are we."
"You don't work this side."
"Since when?"
"Since always."
"Last year you were on the other side."
"Different arrangement."
A third rescue worker walked over.
"Stop arguing."
"Tell them."
"Tell us what?"
"This is our job, because the police called us."
"The police called us too."
"Then ask the police."
The police officer came over.
"What's the problem?"
"They're in our area."

The officer looked at both groups.

The two rescue teams had forgotten about him.

Somchai was beginning to think the whole thing had been badly organised.
His wife had turned up, but she seemed more interested in the gold.
The lender was there.
The Thao Share was there.
The reporter had been talking to everybody except him.
The police had given him a sandwich.
The rescue workers were fighting.
His brother-in-law was flying his bloody drone around somewhere, although apparently not here.
And nobody was looking up.
He thought about the gold again.
His wife knew about the gold, but not where he hid it.
However, he forgot to tell the boys.
He couldn't call from the bridge, could he?
“Son, look I'm on the bridge, about to take my life, but about the gold...”
Actually, he couldn't do that either, as he had his phone. Fuck.
He couldn't tell the police, as no one trusts them.
If they could get past the dog, they'd keep it for themselves, and might torch the house for good measure.
He had his son's phone, so couldn't call him.
He couldn't exactly shout the location of the gold across the bridge.
He looked at the bag.
He looked at the sweater.
He looked at the sandwich.
He looked at the drink.
Two hours.
It had been less than two hours.
He could do it another day.
There was no need to rush.
He could prepare better next time.
Bring another phone.
Bring more food.
Sort out the gold.
Perhaps bring the climbing shoes.
That would be more comfortable.
He began climbing down.

The junior policeman called his sergeant.
"Serg."
"What?"
"He has thrown in the towel."
"You mean jumped?"
"No, he's coming down."
"Oh."
A pause.
"Bring me back a pastrami."
"From the jumper's shop?"
"Same deal as last week."
"Serg."

The wife looked towards the bridge.
"Oh, look. He's changed his mind. Knew he would. He can't follow through with anything."
Prasert shrugged.
"At least he's bringing back the phone."
“You and your tech.”
She checked her own phone.
"I've got a message."
"From him?"
"No."
"The new guy?"
She smiled.
"Yes."
"What does he say?"
"Where are you?"
She typed.
"Lunch."

The reporter called the office.
"He's backed out."
"Any heroics?"
"No."
"What happened?"
"The cop is still standing here."
"That's it? Forget it, then. I've got other jobs for you."
The reporter looked across the bridge.
Somchai was almost down.
Nobody was looking up.
"OK," he said.
He put the phone away.

Notes:

Can AI get inside a person's head?

One common objection to AI-generated fiction is that however fluent the prose, a machine cannot really get inside a human mind. It has no childhood, no marriage, no bad boss, no embarrassing memory at 3am. It has never been lonely, jealous, frightened, drunk, dumped or made to wonder where the bloody hell its life went wrong.

So how could it possibly know what any of us are thinking?

Fair enough.

Still, we wondered, from the outside, if we could construct a mind that behaves as though it belongs to a particular person, in a particular place, among particular people — and whether the reader can recognise that mind without being told what it is.

Could AI get inside the head of a Thai? Now we're asking for trouble.

The challenge was not to produce a tortured interior monologue, or to reproduce the familiar literary tricks of stream of consciousness. Those are techniques, and techniques can be learned.

Literary scholars have long pointed out that even human “stream of consciousness” is not a transcript of a mind at work but a carefully constructed representation of one.

We wanted something less obvious.

So we gave it Somchai.

Somchai has climbed onto a bridge because he thinks it would be a good way of attracting attention.

He has arranged the police, the television reporter, his wife, a few spectators and assorted other parties. He has bought a sandwich from a shop that specialises in supplying jumpers.

He has thought about the weather, brought a sweater and forgotten to arrange what happens to his gold if he dies. Below him, meanwhile, Bangkok carries on.

The rescue workers listen to the police radio and race to the scene. The len share people worry about the money. The informal lender worries about the house. The reporter worries about his next assignment. Somchai's wife worries about her new boyfriend.

Her brother worries about his drone. The police worry about paperwork. And nobody looks up.

The curious thing is that Somchai isn't fundamentally different from any of them. He has his own agenda too. He is simply the only person on the bridge.

Somchai thought the view was quite good.
He had not been expecting it to be so cold.
He checked the bag again.
Sweater.
Sandwich.
Drink.
Phone.
Enough for two hours, he thought.
Two hours was plenty.
He had not actually decided where to jump.
First, he needed to see what it would be like.
The bridge was high enough. That was the main thing. He had checked that.
He had also checked where the police could get to him and where they couldn't. They would have trouble getting up to where he was sitting. That was good.
There was no point coming all this way only to have some policeman grab him after five minutes.
The sandwich was from the jumper's shop.
He had gone there earlier with the backpack and gloves and the shopkeeper had taken one look at him.
"Bridge?"
"Yes."
"First time?"
"Yes."
The man had nodded as if Somchai had told him he wanted a phone charger.
"Pastrami?"

AI may be just part of the production chain, but some critics regard its contribution as a frontal assault to the author's role.

The author was actually there, putting up a valiant struggle in the face of stubborn human obstacles - political, health, what have you - that help define what being human is all about. AI can't take that from us!

Well, no.

Yet AI writing can help connect the writer with universal human themes, as the wandering grandma tale showed. And it can do this even by stripping out the author's subjectivity, as we did there.

As those authors accused of ripping off AI and passing off the work as their own know well, AI can even put the subjectivity in, fleshing out the bones of a bare story outline, and all without having lived a life at all (see next post in Jamming series).

But what of subjectivity?

Some writers resort to fairly blatant literary techniques (manipulating the reader, if you like) the same way AI does with language, confounding what we thought of them previously.

Take Edgar Allan Poe. The public loves the myth of the tortured artist writing directly from the raw nerve of his misery. Yet Poe himself famously presented "The Philosophy of Composition" as an account of the cold calculation behind "The Raven".

Or take Boris Pasternak. His triumph in "Doctor Zhivago" wasn't that he wrote angry, subjective political tirades against Soviet oppression. Instead, he imbues ordinary objects with symbolism and religious meaning, thereby stepping out of the frame.

A story inspired by Hiroko Oyamada's “Crabs”

“Crabs” sent us in a different direction.

We were struck by the idea at its centre: crabs returning to a shoreline that humans had buried beneath roads, buildings and reclaimed land. But we wondered what might happen if that idea were taken out of the schoolroom context of the original and allowed to become something larger — a story about migration, memory and the mysterious pull of home.

So we re-imagined it.

The crabs remain. The journey remains. But the schoolgirl has gone, and in her place is an old woman who has spent much of her life away from the country where she was born. Watching the crabs return each year, she begins to wonder whether animals and people may sometimes be driven by forces they cannot explain.

This is not an attempt to rewrite Oyamada's story. It is an original story that grew out of an argument with it.

Every autumn, when the crabs came down from the hills, Hana's grandmother went to the shore to watch them.

A day in Keats's orchard: Swell the gourd, man!

Keats wanted to disappear.

One of the things that makes contemporary AI writing unsettling is its apparent absence of a distinctive human authorial self. The machine can produce prose without an obvious personality behind it — something critics sometimes regard as evidence of its artificiality.

Keats had almost the opposite ambition. In an 1818 letter, he described the ideal poet as having “no self”, becoming a kind of chameleon that takes on the character of whatever it observes. The poet, ideally, disappears into the subject.

To Autumn is perhaps the clearest example. Keats tells us remarkably little about Keats. He gives us fruit swelling, branches bending, grain being winnowed, cider being pressed, lambs bleating and swallows gathering overhead. The poet has almost vanished.

So here is an odd experiment: what happens when a poem by a man who deliberately tried to remove himself from his poetry is translated with the help of a machine which critics sometimes accuse of doing something similar by nature?

We haven't attempted to reproduce “Keats's subjective voice”. We've attempted to reproduce what many readers identify on their first reading: the verbs, the objects, the sounds and the movement.
