Finally I may reveal a secret…

when the postman rang at my door yesterday he had an envelope from U.S. to deliver. Inside there was a sample issue of “Fons and Porter, Love of Quilting” featuring my quilt White Labyrinth. How exciting is this!

Well, as wonderful as it is reaching not only the modern quilters’ taste and the readers of newest Quilt Scene with my style but also a group of traditional quilters who love using their skills and experiences to make an elegant quilt like this Log Cabin version – to tell about being featured is not a secret.

But now – take a closer look and see this - what I’m simply enthusiastically thrilled about …

When I came home last May from Quilt Market, I reported about all the warm welcome I got and the opportunities opening and that all effort was worth it and that there is something in the air. At this time I had to keep it for myself until it becomes official, and now I can finally tell you all about this:

My fabrics are produced by Moda! They are right now in the mill for strike offs and will be presented on the Spring Quilt Market in Kansas this May. Bolts will be available in stores soon!
Can you imagine how exciting it is to see a selvedge with your name on it? It feels like 10 Christmases and Easters falling together when you find yourself finally at a point on your way which has been a long dreamed goal. I couldn’t be more excited!

To work with one of the leading quilt fabric manufacturers is not only an honor for me, it’s an inspiration, it fuels my flame of creativity, it helps me grow in what I’m doing as a designer. We even have a second fabric line for fall on our schedule. I so love to join the Moda designers, to be “a new member of the family”. I can honestly say I’m just grateful.

Thanks to you all who love my approach to quilts, who encourage me to be authentic in my style, who cheer me up in my creativity!
It means a lot to me!

Als der Briefträger gestern an meiner Tür klingelte, hatte er einen Umschlag aus USA in der Hand. Er brachte mir ein Referenzexemplar von “Fons and Porter, Love of Quilting”, das meinen Quilt White Labyrinth veröffentlicht. Wie schön!

Nun – so gerne ich es sehe, nicht nur den Geschmack der modernen Quilter oder Leser der neuesten “Quilt Scene” zu erreichen, sondern auch eine Gruppe eher traditioneller Quilterinnen, die mit ihren handwerklichen Fertigkeiten und ihrem Erfahrungsschatz auch gerne einen eleganten Log Cabin nähen - über diesen Zeitschriftenbeitrag zu erzählen, ist jetzt kein Geheimnis.

Aber nun schau etwas genauer hin, dann entdeckst du das, was mein Herz einfach vor Freude springen lässt:

Als ich letzten Mai vom Quilt Market zurückkam, berichtete ich über die herzliche Aufnahme, all die Möglichkeiten, die sich aufgetan hatten, und dass sich all meine Anstrengungen ausgezahlt hatten und – dass da noch etwas in der Luft liegt. Damals musste ich diese Neuigkeit noch für mich behalten, bis sie offiziell wurde, und jetzt kann ich es endlich verraten:

Meine Stoffe werden von Moda produziert! Momentan sind sie gerade für erste Vorabproben in der Druckerei und werden im Mai auf dem Quilt Market in Kansas auf den Markt gebracht. Die Stoffe werden also schon bald in den Läden als Meterware zu kaufen sein!
Kannst du dir vorstellen, wie toll es sich anfühlt, wenn man eine Webkante mit dem eigenen Namen darauf in Händen hält? Es fühlt sich für mich an wie 10 Weihnachten und Ostern zusammen, wenn man auf seiner Wegstrecke an einem lang geträumten Ziel ankommt. Ich freu mich riesig!

Mit einer Firma zu arbeiten, die auf dem Quiltstoffmarkt mit führend ist, ist nicht nur eine gewisse Ehre für mich, es ist eine Inspiration, schürt meine Kreativität, hilft mir mich in meiner Arbeit als Designerin weiter zu entwickeln.
Es gibt sogar schon eine zweite Kollektion für die Herbstmesse.
Ich bin wirklich happy damit, zu den Modadesignern zu gehören und in diesem sehr familiären Team zu arbeiten.

Dankeschön für all die Kommentare, die mich ermutigen, mein Quiltdesign weiter zu verfolgen und mich mit ihrem positiven feedback für immer neue Ideen inspirieren!

Fabric choices for the modern quilter

Do you remember the mottled look of the old street facade of my recent post which gave me my color inspiration?
Here is what I found matching the sense in this picture: again Batiks fit really great and I guess this could become a cool men quilt.
By doing me research I found lots of “geometric” Batiks which look perfect for this scene (didn’t know that Batiks have such a variety). Cool, huh? (ok, the last one is not a Batik, but supplements the group).
Have you ever used Batiks for a quilt and if for which project? How did it turn out?

Erinnerst du dich an diese abgeblätterte alte Straßenfasade aus meinem Post neulich? Sie stand Pate für mein aktuelles Farbschema. Und dies sind nun die Stoffe, die, wie ich finde, die Essenz dieses Fotos wunderbar wiederspiegeln: Batiks.
Bei meiner Stoffrecherche fand ich ganz tolle, geometrische Batiks, die bestimmt einen coolen Quilt für einen Mann abgeben könnten. Ich wusste gar nicht, dass es bei den Batiks solch eine Bandbreite gibt. Der letzte in meinem Stoffschema ist zugegebenermaßen kein Batik, ergänzt die Gruppe aber sehr schön.
Hast du schon mal Batikstoffe eingesetzt und wenn ja, für welches Projekt und wie gefiel dir das Ergebnis?

Longarm Quilting

My blogging slowed a bit down these days and it seems that I’ve been way of a neglecting blog friend during the last few weeks not always answering your nice comments. I was just that busy, busy and busy and could hardly run my blogging. Please forgive me and don’t mind!

From mid of January until mid of February I provide a discount on my longarm quilting service and nearly each day new orders drop in (don’t get me wrong: it’s wonderful and I’m glad about). That means that besides my other chores like taking care for the onlineshop, preparing my next Quilt Market, sewing samples for magazines, providing content for my membership club, answering emails, marketing my stuff, doing my bookkeeping I have each day a quilt on my longarm machine.

So – enough explaining.

See here the newest result. This very traditional quilt is – can you believe it – completely sewn by handstitiching. All these tiny little squares, which are lovely and thoughtfully arranged, cut and sewn by hand. OMG. While quilting this treasure I found such a lot of sweet details, fussy cut of little animals, hearts, each square pieced stripe is a unique love declaration itself. From a mother for her daughter.
She calls it Winterquilt, because there are large winter scenes framed by the square pieced sashings. We decided to quilt a snowflake inside each block and enhance the sashing by cables which turn out like wreathes around the blocks.

Can you see how lovely she built every square pieced sashing strip? She incorporated little pictures like the owl above or the cockatoo and the rocking horse below.

The bright red backing showcases the quilting beautifully and you can see how the cables join like a wreath.

Her large queen size quilt will be exhibited at “Nadelwelt Karlsruhe” in May. All the best for you, Lilian!

She did also another hand sewn quilt, a most precious “Grandmother’s Flowergarden” for her other daughter, which will be exhibited also. See pictures from this spectacular quilt and more results of my this month’s longarm quilting here.

In letzter Zeit kam ich nicht häufig dazu, meinen Blog zu schreiben und habe meine Blogfreunde ein wenig vernachlässigt indem ich nicht immer gleich auf die Kommentare geantwortet habe. Ich hatte einfach soooo viel zu tun, dass ich es kaum geschafft habe, auch noch meinen Blog zu pflegen. Bitte sieh es mir nach und nimm es mir nicht übel!

Von Mitte Januar bis Mitte Februar biete ich einen Rabatt auf meinen Longarm Quilting Service und so kommen beinahe täglich neue Aufträge bei mir an (nicht dass du mich falsch verstehst: das ist natürlich prima und ich bin happy damit). Nur – es bedeutet eben, dass ich neben meinem Onlineshop und der Vorbereitung auf den nächsten Quiltmarket, dem Nähen von Zeitschriftenmodellen und dem Schreiben von Clubbeiträgen, dem Beantworten von emails und dem Marketing und der Buchhaltung noch jeden Tag einen Quilt auf der Longarmmaschine habe.

So- genug erklärt.

Dies ist also das jüngste Resultat. Dieser sehr traditionelle Quilt wurde – kann man sich das vorstellen – komplett von Hand genäht. Alle diese winzigen kleinen Quadrate hat sie mit der Schere minutiös ausgeschnitten, um eine Schablone gefaltet, geheftet und dann liebevoll und mit Sinn fürs Detail mit Miniaturstichen zusammengefügt. Unglaublich! Als ich an diesem Quilt gearbeitet habe, habe ich ständig neue, hübsche Details entdeckt, genau mittig in den Quadraten platzierte kleine Tierbilder oder Herzchen. Jeder zusammengesetzte Sashingstreifen war wie eine einzige Liebeserklärung von einer Mutter an ihre Tochter.

Sie nennt ihn “Winterquilt”, denn große Blöcke mit Drucken von Winterszenen - Schlittenfahren, Eislaufen – werden umrahmt von den kleingemusterten Sashings. Wir haben zusammen beschlossen, in die Mitte der Winterszene nur eine simple Schneeflocke zu quilten und das Sashing mit einem Cablequilting zu betonen. Die Cables laufen immer zu Kreuzungen zusammen und wirken durch ihre Kurven wie ein Kranz um die Winterszene herum.

Auf den Detailfotos sieht man, wie liebevoll sie jeden Sashingstreifen zusammengesetzt hat. Sie hat kleine Bildchen eingebaut. eine Eule, ein Kakadu, ein Schaukelpferd…

Das leuchtende Rot auf der Rückseite bringt das Quilting hervorragend zur Geltung und zeigt, wie sich die Cables zu einem Kranz zusammenfügen.

Dieser große Queen-Size Quilt wird auf der Nadelwelt in Karlsruhe im Mai ausgestellt werden, genauso wie ein anderer kostbarer Quilt von Lilian, den sie für ihre zweite Tochter von Hand genäht hat: Ein “Grandmother’s Flowergarden”. Usually you find this post on Tuesday, but this time Tuesday was a busy day. I’ll tell you more about later.

About my inspiration – isn’t it that you can find sometimes beauty in even ugly things if you focus on some aspects? I think concerning color you can find wonderful inspiration in broken, rusty or damaged items like in this facade of a city building (I had such a damaged beauty once some posts ago).

Wow, what a richness of shades in grey or rust and a bit of petrol spices it all up.

Maybe this is a more masculine palette, but we sew for men too, don’t we?

Any suggestions for a pattern or fabrics? I’d love your ideas.

Normalerweise erscheint diese Postserie Dienstags auf meinem Blog, aber dieser Dienstag ließ mir keine Zeit – davon erzähle ich noch später.

Zu meiner Inspirationsquelle – ist es nicht so, dass man manchmal gerade in hässlichen Dingen eine gewisse Schönheit entdecken kann, je nachdem wie man die Dinge betrachtet? Ich denke, was Farbe betrifft, ist es so. In vielen kaputten, abgeblätterten, oder alten Dingen findet man oft wunderbare Farbschemen wie in dieser alten Stadtfassade (ich hatte ein ähnliches Beispiel schon mal in einem vergangenen Post).

Was für ein Reichtum an Schattierungen in Grau und Rost, aufgepeppt mit ein bisschen Petrol als Kontrast. Dies mag vielleicht eher eine maskuline Palette sein, aber wir nähen ja schließlich auch für Männer.

Hast du vielleicht irgendwelche Vorschläge für Stoff- oder Musterauswahl? Ideen sind herzlich willkommen.

My mum loves preparing meals and so I gave her for her birthday a day in the interesting “Dr. Oetker world” (a company located in the town I live. I don’t know if you have ever heard about this company which delivers worldwide baking supplies and pizzas. In Germany it’s a huge well-known factory. The company’s bestselling product are puddings and you can get a cup of hot, sweet pudding from this pudding machine above).

What else do you see visiting the “Dr. Oetker world” – a remodeled old brick-building with a new modern facade from glass

can pick um some recipes

and see what they do to get their quality products with very high standards.

As part of the event you’re guest of their “test kitchen” where they show you how to make some wonderful meals using the products and let you try the results.

It’s interesting and worth a visit – so if you’re ever near my town, don’t miss it (you have to book it a half year forward, they are overbooked).

So- und jetzt dazu, weswegen ich Dienstag gar keine Zeit hatte. Ein leckerer, wohlriechender und süßer Anlass:
Meine Mutter macht gerne leckere Mahlzeiten, und so habe ich ihr zum Geburtstag einen Besuch in der Dr. Oetker Welt geschenkt: Der historische Backsteinbau, renoviert mit einer modernen Glasfassade hat als Herz einen Riesenvanillepudding: Eine Maschine, die auf Knopfdruck heißen Pudding liefert. Ein Rundgang durch die Firmengeschichte mit alten Produktionsgeräten und einer Zeitreise durch die verschiedenen Fernsehwerbungen, Beispiele der Qualitätskontrollen, Rezeptwiese zum “Pflücken” neuer Ideen und manches mehr ist unterhaltsam und informativ und wird von einer Führung bestens erklärt. Im mehr kulinarischen Teil der Dr. Oetker Welt erhält man dann in der Versuchsküche Demos über Rezepte und Anwendung von Produkten mit entsprechender Verköstigung.

Das alles macht einem Lust und Laune, so dass man immer wieder im Publikum hört “das probier ich gleich morgen mal aus” und die Besucher anschließend auch gerne noch ein bisschen in dem sehr günstigen Produktlädchen shoppen.

Insgesamt eine empfehlenswerte Sache, wer Lust dazu hat, sollte sich allerdings mindestens ein halbes Jahr vorher darum bemühen, denn die Termine sind vollkommen überbucht.

When recently a comment advised me to built a color scheme from fatquatershop fabrics and be a part of the competition I created this one below which reminds me of a yummy blood orange.

So now my pattern: Playing circles on a solid ground. I made two variations: a calm one, with a light and decent grey, looks very contemporary. This “binding” has a larger width, so it looks nearly like a border.

And now for all of you who prefer a passionate red over a calm grey

Which one do you like better?

The best is: I only used the fabrics I’ve chosen for my fatquartershop color palette. So if you like my choice you can order a bit of each at only one shop (save time and shipping money) and make the same quilt.

BTW: did you know that Moda created a wonderful light grey Bella Solid (looks like the one background above) and called it “ZEN grey”? Love it!

Als mich kürzlich ein Kommentar darauf hinwies, doch ein Farbschema für den Wettbewerb von fatquartershop zu gestalten, habe ich diese Stoffe oben zusammengestellt, die mich irgendwie an den Geschmack von Blutorgangen erinnern.

Hier ist also mein Muster: Verspielte Kreise auf einem einfarbigen Grund appliziert. Ich hab hier gleich zwei Variationen: ein sehr mildes, beruhigendes helles Grau, sieht sehr modern aus. Das Binding ist so breit, dass es schon als Rand zählen könnte.

Und für alle, die ein leidenschaftliches Rot einem ruhigen Grau vorziehen eine zweite Variante.

Welche gefällt dir besser?

Das beste daran ist: für meine Entwürfe habe ich lediglich die Stoffe benutzt, die ich für den Fatquartershop-Wettbewerb zusammengestellt habe. Wenn du also meinen Entwurf so gerne magst, dass du auch so was nähen möchtest, kannst du alles in einem Shop finden.

Übrigens: wusstest du, dass Moda einen neuen grauen Unistoff in die Bella Solids Palette aufgenommen hat, der genauso aussieht, wie das Hellgrau oben. Er heißt “Zen grey”, was ich natürlich liebe!

My last color choice was more decent, way of cool – so my today’s color scheme demands for something vibrant, warm.

it’s a macro shot of a lot of nursery bedding pots in the hothouse ready for the next season of early planting. Would you have guessed?

Cool, huh? Well, I mean hot, or warm, or kind of cozy although it could also be rusty steel, something like that.

So, now my color palette

I just can help but thinking of a crackling open fire, me in front of it, reading an exciting book.

What do you imagine seeing those colors? What inspirations do they give to you?

Mein letztes Farbschema war dezent und etwas kühl, deshalb war mir dieses mal auf jeden Fall nach etwas Warmem, Farben mit Ausstrahlung. Falls du dich wunderst, was auf das auf dem Foto (bei Flickr gefunden) sein soll – es sind zusammengestapelte Blumentöpfe in einem Gewächshaus, die auf die neue Pflanzsaison warten. Cool, oder?

Nein, ich meine eigentlich eher warm, heiß, und auch irgendwie gemütlich. Die Farben könnten auch von einem Stahlrohr mit Rost sein oder so etwas ähnlichem.

Bei diesen Farben steigt in mir sofort ein inneres Bild von einem prasselnden Kaminfeuer auf, ich sitze (nein chille sagt man ja heute) davor, und lese ein spannendes Buch.

Was denkst du bei diesen Farben, welche Bilder oder Inspirationen verbindest du mit diesem rot?

Hello again, back from some refreshing days off I’m wishing everyone a blessed and happy 2012! I hope you enjoyed your holidays and had a good time with your beloved and friends.

As promised I start my blogging in January with a quilt pattern made from my last color scheme. But when experimenting with placing fabrics and colors I couldn’t make up my mind which variation I’d like better. The one with only one background fabric (which looks more distinguished)

or the one with different colored “frames”, looks not so much like a wall, more lively, more like what we know as patchwork.

What do you think? Which one do you like better?

Dieses Bild war meine Inspiration für die Farb- und Stoffauswahl in dieser Postserie. Als ich das Muster entwickelt habe, konnte ich mich einfach nicht so richtig entscheiden, welche der beiden Varianten wohl besser aussieht – die obere mit nur einem Hintergrundstoff (die etwas mehr der ursprünglichen Wand ähnelt und zurückhaltender aussieht) oder die zweite Version mit den verschiedenfarbigen Hintergrundrähmchen, die doch mehr das ist, was wir unter Patchwork verstehen.

Diese modernen und graphischen Patchworkstoffe habe ich jetzt für meine Farbpalette von letzter Woche gefunden. Erinnerst du dich? Ich habe ein Bild von einem Flur als Inspiration genommen und dann daraus ein Farbschema abgeleitet.

Ganz toll fand ich die vielen Hinweise, wo ich suchen konnte, ich hab manches entdeckt, von dem ich bislang noch nichts gehört hatte. Ganz lieben Dank!!!

Den Herstellernachweis zu der Stoffpalette findest du unter der Stoffauswahl, und zwar in der Folge von links nach rechts.

Diese Stoffe machen mich richtig an, ich hab sofort Lust, mehr daraus zu machen als nur einen Entwurf am PC, etwas richtiges zu nähen. Kann ich nicht zu Weihnachten 40 Extra Stunden Zeit für mich oder eine Nähfee geschenkt bekommen?

Nächstes mal zeige ich, welches Muster mir dazu in den Sinn gekommen ist, aber das wird wahrscheinlich nicht vor Januar sein. Mit dem Blog mache ich mal eine kleine Pause, weil ich die Zeit an den Festtagen mit meiner Familie verbringen möchte.

For all the members of Quilter’s Garden I wrote a tutorial for a very special book cover. It’s made from YOUR fabric. You just design something on your PC, iron a white piece of fabric on a sheet of freezer paper, and print it out on your PC’s printer. Fix the colors by ironing the fabric very hot – and make your very personal gift: A diary, a planner, a notebook or cover a book of poems for your beloved one.

Für die Mitglieder von Quilter’s Garden habe ich dieses Tutorial für ein Buchcover mit ganz persönlichem Einband geschrieben, denn jeder kann doch ein hübsch verpacktes Notizbuch, einen Jahresplaner oder sogar ein Tagebuch gebrauchen, oder?

and covers his first load already with sugar pearls while waiting for the second. I think he knows how smart he is, or?

Diese Bilder meiner kleinen Küchenfee muss ich einfach mal zeigen. Obwohl Ben recht entspannt dabei ist und sogar ein Liedchen vor sich hinpfeift, ist natürlich nicht zu übersehen, wieviel Mühe er sich gibt, die perfekt geformten Kokosmakronen aufs Blech zu bekommen. Und – im täglichen Training bei einer Multitaskingmutter – arbeitet er supereffizient und klebt schon die ersten Liebesperlen auf seine fertige Ladung während die zweite noch im Backofen gart. Er weiß doch genau, dass ich ihn für ein schlaues Kerlchen halte, oder?

Color choices for the modern quilter

If you know a bit about me you’ll may have recognized that I’m not so much in the vintage or shabby chic style, although I think there are wonderful examples of it I really like. It’s just that the style in which I grew is more clean or modern or somewhat like this. But nevertheless I pick up some vintage looking inspirations here and there and today this picture is the source for my color scheme, just pretending to develop a quilt for this entrance.

Obviously the theme is black and white, but surrounded by a pale naturals palette: tan, leafy, duck egg.

Any lettered fabrics would be great to tune in the black and white character of the scene. Will see what I can find.

Do you know any fabric stores online specialized in lettered (or Japanese) fabrics? Any recommendations?

Falls du mich inzwischen etwas kennst, könntest du bemerkt haben, dass ich nicht so sehr im Vintage oder Shabby Chic Style beheimatet bin, obwohl es viele tolle Beispiele gibt, die mir gefallen. Es ist eher so, dass ich eben mehr in den modern, clean Style reingewachsen bin. Nichtsdestoweniger picke ich mal hier und da Ideen aus dem Vintagestyle auf, die mich inspirieren, wie hier z. B. das Foto eines Flurs für ein Farbschema – einfach mal so zum Spaß, als gäbe es einen Quilt für diesen Platz zu entwickeln.

Ganz offensichtlich ist das Thema hier schwarz-weiß, eingebettet in eine sanfte gefärbte Umgebung aus Naturfarben wie sand, blattgrün oder enteneierblau.

Stoffe mit Schriftdrucken, wie Zeitungsausschnitte könnten gut zu diesem Thema passen.

Kennst du irgendwelche Onlineshops, die ein gutes Angebot an Buchstabenstoffen oder auch japanischen Drucken haben, irgendein Tipp?

November’s Pillow Talk winner and a new prize announcement

So many beautiful pillows to talk about that I hardly can tell which one is my favorite.
Here is a colorful star from Adrienne, which she made for her pillow swap. Don’t miss her blog, a place full of eye-candy.

Christine, who lives coincidentally just a few miles away from me, made this lettered pillow for her friend’s new born baby. Can you imagine that it’s her first machine quilted one? Looks fantastic, see more of her cute children sewing on her flickr stream.

I love the cozy colors Kirsten used for her logcabin pillow, the yellow is warming like sun, isn’t it? If you lay your head down on it, you’ll instantly be in a good mood.

Lori’s little pillow or big pincushion (whatever you like to see in it) is a pile of layers, in between a Dresden Plate, Fassetts and dots, on top a dotted button. I think sweeter than any cupcake! Maybe this was the reason why the linky-lottery-fairy has chosen hers as the winner. Tataa! Congratulations to you, Lori, my “Juggling Summer”-Print is on its way to you.

And last (entry) but not least there is another Dresden Plate companion: Sues Sunflower Pillow, made for her grandma. I think she did a great job to meet any grandmas taste with the warm, sunny colors but add a contemporary touch by choosing modern graphic fabrics. I like the quilting on this pillow!

Inspiring Berlin and a baaaad cold

Today I feel like a man, at least concerning their whining when they got a cold. Usually they let you know that these might be the last hours of their life :-). While sniffing and sneezing laying in my bed notebook on knees I try to work a bit: Catching up with the comments in my mailbox and blogging.

I brought my cold with me from the rainy and cold weather we had this weekend, when I enjoyed my birthday present, which I got from my sweetheart: a trip to Berlin. To escape from the rain we made a cultural museum/restaurant/club/event hop of it.

What do you like when it's cold and cloudy outside? For me it's some sweet and so I was really drawn to visit "Ritter Sport" Chocolate-Museum to dive in the warmth of a creamy hot sweet stream of chocolate, to imagine all the different tastes and the world of colorful chocolate products, to figure out, how it is done, to choose one of the thirty ingredients to make my own. Let it rain outside. I'm happy here.

Around the corner we came to one of Berlin's beautiful Christmas exhibitions on the historical "Gendarmenmarkt" where you can find all sorts of arts and crafts-

And since it was not enough to eat the sweets we filled our hungry stomachs in this beautiful Art Nouveau Restaurant.

Next morning – cold and rainy again – design should be our inspiration. You all might heard something about the famous Bauhaus style of 1925-1932 founding essential parts of what we call modern design nowadays. So we headed over to the Bauhaus exhibition.

Would you imagine that this (quilt) pattern which we would call contemporary is from 1925something, nearly 85 years old? You definitely should have a look of the bauhaus textile style. What we saw in this exhibition was so inspiring and even timeless in its simplicity and elegance.

And if this was not enough inspiration we continued our tour and ended at the "Berlinische Galerie" where the showcase design of Berlin artists from the last hundred years.

J.Mayer did the entrance hall by decorating it with an oversized carpet. Data coded paper is what gives him his ideas. Don't miss to see more from his design here.

The evening we spent over the roofs of Berlin in a scene club called "Solar" where you have a wonderful view of the sea of lights.

Sunday was family day – a visit by my honey's brother, sister in law, nieces. But at the end of the day the highlight, not only of the evening but of the whole trip – a journey into a magic, colorful world of fantasy and dreams, an "ooh" and a "wow" for eyes and ears – Christmas show in Friedrichstadtpalace.

Have you ever been to Berlin and what did inspire you?

Heute fühle ich mich wie ein Mann, zumindest was das Rumjammern über eine Erkältung betrifft. Männer lassen uns dann ja gewöhnlich wissen, dass sie möglicherweise nur noch wenig Stunden zu leben haben :-). Während ich hier herumschniefe und niese, versuche ich ein bisschen im Bett an meinem Laptop zu arbeiten, meine Mails zu beantworten und meinen Blog zu schreiben.

Die Erkältung habe ich mir in Berlin eingefangen, bei diesem nasskalten Wetter das wir hatten, eine Wochenendstädtereise, die mir Martin zu meinem Geburtstag geschenkt hat. Um dem Regen möglichst zu entfliehen machten wir auf Kultura in Museen, Restaurants, Clubs und bei Events.

Was magst du, wenn es draußen kalt und bedeckt ist? Ich hab dann gerne etwas Süßes und so zog es mich zum "Ritter Sport" Chocolate-Museum , um dort einzutauchen in die Vorstellung der Wärme von einem Strom aus süßer, heißer, flüssiger Schokolade, von verschiedensten Geschmackssorten und farbenfrohen Produkten. Herauszufinden, wie die das alles machen und von 30 Zutaten etwas auszuwählen, um die eigene Schokolade zu kreieren. Lass es draußen ruhig regnen, ich bin glücklich hier.

Um die Ecke war einer von Berlins schönen Weihnachtsmärkten, der am Gendarmenmarkt, wo es alle erdenklichen künstlerischen und handwerklich gefertigten schönen Dinge zu bestaunen gibt. Die vom Bummeln hungrig gewordenen Mägen wurden dann im wunderschönen Jugendstilrestaurant "Amici" besänftigt.

Der nächste morgen erwartete uns genauso kalt und regnerisch und deshalb beschlossen wir einen Designtag zu machen. Wahrscheinlich kennst du den berühmten Bauhausstil (1925 –33), der ganz wesentlich die zeitgenössische Formensprache geprägt hat. Natürlich führte uns unser Weg zur Bauhaus exhibition.

Weiter ging es zur Berlinischen Galerie, die Berliner Künstler und Designer mit Werken aus den letzten hundert Jahren zeigt. Sehr interessant ist die Arbeit des Architekten. J. Mayer, man sollte einen Blick auf seine Werke werfen, die hauptsächlich von Datensicherungsbriefpapier abgeleitet sind.

Abends genossen wir das Lichtermeer von Berlin in einem Restaurant, das über den Dächern liegt.

Sonntag war ein Familientag, wir besuchten Martins Bruder, doch abends dann das Highlight nicht nur des Tages, sondern der Reise: Ein Ausflug in die phantasievolle, bunte, schillernde, märchenhafte Welt, ein Augen- und Ohrenschmaus bei der Weihnachtsshow im Friedrichstadtpalast.

War diese Reise nicht die schlimmste Erkältung allemal wert?

Here is my quilt pattern for the green color scheme. The background’s color is “duck egg”, so why not use some duck eggs as a pattern? Or do you mind me showing something which looks a little bit like Easter eggs just a few days before Christmas ;-)?

BTW green is my favorite color ;-)
How easily can you relate to green? Is it a color you often use?

Forest, turquoise, pear, mint, grey, gold and even more shades made the colors of my inspirational picture. And graphic modern prints were what I chose for matching the color scheme.

Tannengrün, türkis, erbsengrün, mintgrün, grau, gold und noch einige mehr Schattierungen machten das Bild aus, das mich zum Farbschema Grün inspirierte. Graphische und moderne Drucke habe ich dazu passend ausgesucht.

Der Hintergrundstoff hat die Farbe “Enteneierblau” und warum dann nicht gleich ein paar Enteneier auf den Entwurf zaubern :-)?
Oder ist es merkwürdig, wenn man etwas was schon so ein bisschen an Ostereier erinnert so kurz vor Weihnachten postet…

Übrigens: Grün ist meine Lieblingsfarbe.
Wie stehst du zu Grün? Benutzt du es öfters und fällt es dir leicht, etwas mit dieser Farbe anzufangen?

Last Tuesday I had this bunch of luggage in such vibrant shades of turquoise, forest, mint, gold and grey as my inspiration for a color scheme.

Letzten Dienstag stand das Bild mit dem üppigen Gepäck in Jade, Tannengrün, Türkis, Grau und Gold Pate für mein Farbschema in Grün. Und dies sind nun die modernen, graphischen Stoffe, die ich ausgesucht habe, um diesem Farbschema zu entsprechen. Mal sehen, welches Quiltmuster ich dann bis nächste Woche daraus machen kann. Übrigens gibt es ja so viele tolle graphische Stoffdrucke, gerade sind wieder eine Menge neuer herausgekommen.

Another variation of the Puzzle-Box Quilt Along

Martina made her variation of the ZEN CHIC Quilt Along in a very modern color way. I had her quilt in my longarm service and I think her queen size quilt turned out simply beautiful.

I quilted it inside the squares with drops, leaving the inserts blank. The border is quilted with a kind of rounded squares, overlaying each other. It’s easy to do and looks not only contemporary but also interesting.
The backing is from a Free Spirit print complimenting the colors of the quilt perfectly.

These days we got a little baby in our home. Since my son came home with a black bundle of fluff I’m a cat granny now. He leaves the house for work at morning and his baby cat goes on a voyage of discovery through my home office and makes my emails weird by toddling over my keyboard. Eventually she finds her nap place on my desktop, soaking up some sunbeams.
Could you be mad at her?

Martina hat eine Variation des ZEN CHIC Quilt Along in einer sehr modernen Farbgebung genäht. Ich hatte ihren Quilt im Longarm service und wirkt er nicht einfach wunderbar?
Innerhalb der Quadrate habe ich Tropfen gequiltet, wobei die kleinen eingesetzten Rechtecke frei geblieben sind. Der Randstreifen ist dann mit gerundeten Quadraten, die übereinandergeschachtelt sind, strukturiert. Ein recht einfach zu nähendes Muster, dass aber sehr zeitgemäß und interessant aussieht.
Der Rückseitenstoff ist ein Free Spirit Druck, der perfekt zu den Farben der Vorderseite passt.
Übrigens haben wir dieser Tage Nachwuchs ins Haus bekommen. Mein Sohn hat mich einfach mit diesem süßen schwarzen Knäuel überwältigt und nun bin ich sozusagen Katzenoma. Morgens geht er zur Arbeit aus dem Haus und dann strolcht die Katze durch mein Arbeitszimmer, probiert neugierig alle möglichen Dinge aus, klettert an meinen Beinen hoch zum Schreibtisch, bringt mein Emailschreiben durcheinander weil sie mal wieder über die Tastatur tapst und lässt sich schließlich genießerisch in der Wärme der Sonnenstrahlen auf meinem Schreibtisch zu einem Schläfchen nieder.
Könntest du ihr böse sein?

We didn’t have green so far, did we? So time for a green color scheme.
Hey wouldn’t you like to have this kind of bags and boxes? No, not this mass of baggage to carry, but this delicious color which would you let easily find all your suitcases among the boring brown, black, grey whatever luggage at the airport conveyor belt?

The last few days had been very busy. Do you know the feeling when you look inside a mirror and are wondering why the face you see seems so much older than the heart you feel inside? Do they really belong together?
I mostly feel young at heart, sometimes even silly like a young girl. There are so many ideas, and yes still dreams living in my mind that life could last twice as many years as so far. Only my mirror speaks other words and my identity card makes clear that most years of my life are over now – calculated statistically and realistically – a couple of days ago I celebrated my 50th birthday!

Oh I was spoiled, my sweetheart surprised my by 50 roses and a weekend trip, my family had funny ideas to give me memories of the past fifty years of my life, my children made an amazing book for me: They collected pages of personal memories and words written by each meaningful person of my life: My brother shared memories of our childhood which I had nearly forgotten, my sister listed all the moments we had to burst out in laughing when we were together. We had a really great day together!

And it is good to take such a day to look back on your life’s journey: To see what you’ve been going through, your struggles, but most of all what you have gotten and all the blessings.

When I look back on my life’s journey there is something I’d like to pass on you: never ever give up on your dreams!

Some know about my life that I took studies in design as a young girl, but because I was a rebel and had a fight with my professor I left without a diploma. For many years I took care for my children by earning a regular income in an office. I was about 48 years when I quitted a quite secure job to go for my dreams.

During all these years my daughter saw me as a designer (just a short time distracted in an office job for some practical reasons) and encouraged me by saying: “Well, Mum, nice fabrics you bought for your shop, and I’m sure one day you will have your own fabric line to sell in your shelves” - “This quilt you made looks beautiful and I’m curious how much more awesome your quilts will look when you’ll eventually use your own fabric line”.

She even surprised me one day when I came home from the office with a room of our house remodeled as a design studio for me.

Well, it took it’s time, but it’s never too late to make your dreams come true (unless you dream to become the Olympic gold medalist in the javelin).
So dear one, if you are just in the years to build up your life or at the age of looking back on many years – hold on your dreams cause they're precious having and don't let anyone ever steal them from you. Remember, that life is what you choose, follow your dreams and do what you love to do.

Hey, würdest du nicht gerne solche Taschen und Kisten haben? Nein, ich mein natürlich nicht diese Massen an Gepäck zu schleppen, sondern mehr die außerordentliche Farbe, die einen einen solchen Koffer sehr leicht unter all den langweiligen braunen, schwarzen und grauen auf dem Flughafenförderband finden ließe.

Stripped Hexagon Bag

Inspired by the cute idea of Jodi’s Etsy-bag I tried to get my own version of this colorful beauty. Mine is a bit smaller, perfect to host my knitting work. But I like also Jodi’s idea for a larger baby-accessory-version: Filled with toys or nappies you can bring it with you everywhere and then lay it out as a play mat.

What was your last exciting Etsy-found?

Inspiriert von der netten Idee von Jodi’s Etsy-bag habe ich meine eigene Variante dieser farbenfrohen Schönheit fabriziert. Meine ist etwas kleiner, genau richtig um mein Strickzeug zu transportieren. Aber ich mag auch die ursprüngliche Idee von Jodi: Eine Babydecke, die man – gefüllt mit Spiel- und Wickelsachen überall mithinnehmen kann, und dort ausgebreitet als Spielmatte dient.

Pattern choices for the modern quilter

When I planned this post series about the purple color scheme I had to find a pattern. My last pattern was a bit challenging to sew - curved seams – so this one should be an easy one, more a traditionally pieced.
Here it is – voilà

Which fabrics should I use for this pattern? It looks a bit like kind of layers, as you could find a second layer behind the grey grid holding the darker purples. Maybe any prints would destroy this illusion. Those purple Logcabin frames could showcase large floral prints, but I tend to just use solids. What do you think?

It’s pretty easy to sew, in case you would give it a try: Here is what a block looks like.

I played around for a while and found another version: Although the grid is still there, the color values of the fillings inside the grid follow no longer a light-dark rule and so it loses the strength and looks nearly picturesque. Maybe one could use a Jelly Roll for the filling and a solid for the grid.

Which version do you like better, Nr. 1 or 2?
Als ich diese Serie von Posts zum Farbschema lila geplant habe, habe ich nach einem passenden Muster gesucht. Mein letztes Muster war ziemlich herausfordernd: Kurvige Nähte. Dieses sollte also etwas einfacher zu nähen sein, Typ traditionell zusammengesetzt. Und das kam dabei heraus.
Welche Stoffe benutzt man am besten für solch ein Muster? Es wirkt ja ein bisschen so, als ob mehrere Ebenen aufeinander geschichtet wären, als ob hinter dem hellen Gitter, das die dunklen Logcabinrahmen hält, noch ein zweites Quiltmuster versteckt wäre. Vielleicht hätten irgendwelche Druckmuster diese Illusion zerstört? Natürlich könnte man diese dunklen Logcabinrahmen auch nutzen, um großformatige Blumendrucke zur Schau zu stellen, aber ich tendiere dazu, nur Unis einzusetzen, was meinst du?
Der Quilt ist ziemlich einfach zu nähen, die Skizze oben zeigt, wie die Blöcke aufgebaut sind.
Ich habe eine Weile mit den Farben herumgespielt und dann noch eine zweite Variation ganz interessant gefunden: Obwohl auch hier wieder das Gitter durchgängig dieselbe Farbe hat, gibt es für die Füllung dieses Gitters nicht länger eine klare Hell-Dunkel-Regel. Dadurch wirkt es nicht mehr so straight sondern eher malerisch. Man könnte vielleicht die Drucke einer Jelly Roll für die “Füllung” und einen einfarbigen Stoff für das Gitter nehmen.
Welche Variante findest du besser? Nr. 1 oder 2?

When I came to gather some interesting blogs I’d like to read on a regular basis I first used just the feed reader of my browser. Then I felt more comfortable with the Google reader showing me a picture and some first lines of a post of each of my favorite blogs displayed side by side on my dashboard.
But one thing I was not really satisfied with: Google reader showed the blogs always in a static, means the same order. So I started each time with the same blog to read and when my timeframe was over I didn’t get to the ones positioned more on the end. The first positioned blogs got more attention than the ones at the end, and this was not my deliberate preference.
And another thing bothering me was: I’d gathered various themed blogs: I’m reading of course about quilting, but also about organizing, design, business advice and so on. Some blogs are more important for me, others I come back in times of strolling around. So I’d like to have all the blogs divided in categories (the ones I read twice a week, the ones I read once a month or some I read, when I have time to make plans about business strategies and so on).
So I’m really happy to have found goodnoows as my reader.
This reader comes usually with preinstalled feeds of some popular news and magazines. I deleted them all. Then I created my own subcategories: Quilting, Organizing, Design and so on. In each subcategory I made the entries about the feeds of my favorite blogs.
Now when I have my timeframe for blog reading I click on my favorite category and all posts will be shown in an dynamic order: the newest comes first. This way my attention will be scattered randomly about all my valuable blogs and when the time is over I don’t feel any guilt of having neglected always the same blogs.
Goodnoows allows different views of the feeds, only as headlines, as picture gallery, as kind of ticker and so on, whatever your reading habits suits best.

I think there are a lot more good feed readers out there, which one is your favorite?
Als ich begann, interessante Blogs zu abonnieren, nutzte ich zuerst einfach den Feedreader meines Browsers. Nach einiger Zeit fand ich es aber schöner, den Google reader zu benutzen, der von allen meinen Lieblingsblogs nebeneinander ein kleines Fensterchen zeigt, mit einem Bild und den ersten Zeilen darin. So fand ich schnell, was ich mir näher ansehen wollte.
Aber es gab da eine Sache, die ich immer unzufriedenstellend fand:

In meinem Google reader erscheint die Vorschau zu den Posts immer in einer statischen, heißt gleichen Anordnung.
Ich setze mir einen bestimmten Zeitrahmen, um die Blogs zu lesen, und meistens habe ich dann mit den selben Blogs zu lesen begonnen, und wenn die Zeit um war, sind immer die Blogs, die zum Ende der Liste auftauchten, zu kurz gekommen. Und das war schade, denn auch die hatten sehr interessante Inhalte.
Und dann störte mich noch eine zweite Sache: Ich lese Blogs zu mehreren Themen: Natürlich über Quilting, aber auch über Organisation, Design, Marketing usw. Manche der Blogs sind mir wichtiger, andere besuche ich mehr, wenn ich mal ein bisschen Zeit zum Surfen übrig habe. Deshalb wollte ich meine Blogs gerne in eigene Kategorien unterteilen (die, die ich mindestens zweimal die Woche besuche, die, die ich vielleicht einmal monatlich nachsehe, und die, die ich mir einfach nur für einen Gelegenheitsbesuch merken möchte).
Ich fand am Ende als Reader goodnoows und bin damit jetzt richtig zufrieden.
Wenn man sich das erste Mal anmeldet, hat man eine Ansicht, in der schon recht viele feeds von populären News und Zeitungen vorinstalliert sind. Ich les jetzt nicht täglich die Börsenberichte und so hab ich die mal rigoros alle weggelöscht. Dann hab ich mir eigene Unterkategorien eingerichtet: Quilting, Organisation, Design, und so weiter. In jeder dieser Unterkategorie habe ich dann einen Eintrag zu den feeds meiner Lieblingsblogs gemacht.
Wenn ich jetzt einen begrenzten Zeitrahmen habe, um Blogs zu lesen, werden alle Posts in einer dynamischen Ansicht gezeigt: Die neuesten zuerst. Auf diese Weise wird meine Aufmerksamkeit gleichmäßig auf alle Lieblingsblogs verteilt und wenn mein Zeitfenster um ist, hab ich nicht das ungute Gefühl, immer dieselben zu vernachlässigen.
Goodnoows ermöglicht auch verschiedene Darstellungen der feeds, nur als Schlagzeile, als Bildgallerie, als kleine “Zeitungsausschnitte”, was immer einem als eine gute Überschau für die eigenen Lesegewohnheiten dient.
Ich denke, es gibt noch eine ganze Menge guter feedreader auf dem Markt. Welchen benutzt du?

Color choices for the modern quilter

Ok, this week a new color scheme is on my schedule and since you kindly gave me a vote it’s: purple. (Some people even suggested to combine the two in one design. Great idea, I will get back to it with a later post. In this color scheme is actually a bit of green, kind of, the middle of the last row. Is it called kakhi?).
Purple potatoes (I’ve never eaten some. Did you?). But at least those colors look so yummy.

How to make blogging easier

Well maybe this isn’t new to most of you, but I know of some bloggers who haven’t heard of this tool so far and this is why I’m mentioning it:
It’s so much easier to do blog writing with a helpful application. I use Windows Live Writer. It’s an offline WYSIWYG application, you can write and format your posts like for example in Word, add easily pictures, vids, maps and others, preview the post in your blog and then determine at which date and time it should be published (which allows me to prepare my posts for times when I’m in vacation). And it’s free.
It works for Blogger, Wordpress, and several other services. When you first start with this application you make some settings of your blog service (login data). If you’re done with your post writing you just click “publish” and your content will be uploaded to your blog. And that’s it, pretty easy and really timesaving.

Wahrscheinlich kennen schon viele Leserinnen dieses Tool, doch andere, die vielleicht gerade mit einem Blog beginnen, haben möglicherweise auch noch nie davon gehört, und deshalb möchte ich hier ein hilfreiches Programm erwähnen:
Es ist soviel einfacher, einen Post für einen Blog zu verfassen, wenn man eine entsprechende Blogging-Application benutzt. Ich benutze Windows Live Writer. Es ist ein WYSIWYG-Offline-Programm, man kann seine Posts ähnlich wie in Word einfach schreiben und formatieren, Bilder, Videos, Landkarten oder ähnliches einfügen und auch einen Zeitpunkt vorbestimmen, wann der Post im Blog erscheinen soll (was ich sehr angenehm fand, um für die Zeit meines Urlaubs ein bisschen was vorzubereiten). Und das Programm ist kostenlos.
Es funktioniert für verschiedenste Blogdienste wie Blogger, Wordpress und einige andere. Beim ersten Start richtet man eine Verbindung zum eigenen Blog mit Logindaten ein. Wenn man dann einen Post fertig hat, klickt man einfach auf “veröffentlichen” und schon wird der Inhalt zum Blog hochgeladen. Es ist ziemlich einfach und auf jeden Fall eine Zeitersparnis. Oben abgebildet ist ein Schreenshot meines Bildschirms, auf dem ich gerade diesen Post mit Live Writer verfasse.

Pattern choices for the modern quilter

Thank you so much for commenting with some suggestions on my post about color choices for the modern quilter. I had this picture of a most exfoliated wall in vibrant colors as my source of inspiration.

And your suggestions motivated me to find not only fabrics but also a pattern reflecting the layered and mottled look of this wall. Although they are not what I understand as typical modern I found Batiks would match the look of this surface ideally.

Now it came to the part to develop the pattern. One comment said “No appliqué, please”. Would you feel I’m teasing you when I say “You opted for a pieced technique, but nobody claimed “NO CURVED SEAMS, PLEASE” ;-) These curved lines I used (of course only pieced!!!) seem to give a look of layers and lift the Batiks up from their traditional use to a modern one.

Will you forgive me for the curves? Please….

Do you think they are worth the effect? Tell me what’s your opinion. And which color scheme do you like me to develop in the next post? You can choose between green or purple

Vielen Dank für die Vorschläge in den Kommentaren zu meinem Post über color choices for the modern quilter. Als Ausgangspunkt hatte ich dort dieses Bild oben von einer völlig abgeblätterten Wand in leuchtenden Farben.

Und die Vorschläge haben mich motiviert, nicht nur Stoffe, sondern auch ein Muster zu finden, das diesen abgeblätterten Charakter der Wand wiedergibt. Obwohl ich Batikstoffe nicht als typisch modern einordne, waren sie in diesem Fall für mich die idealen Materialien.

Jetzt war ich an dem Punkt, das passende Muster zu finden. In einem Kommentar stand “Bitte kein Appliqué” Ich hoffe, es ist nicht gemein, wenn ich sage “Ihr wolltet lieber eine piecing-Technik, aber keiner hat was von “keine Kurvennähte” gesagt ;-)

Diese runden Linien, die selbstverständlich gepieced sind (!!!), sind so ein schöner Ausdruck von übereinander liegenden Ebenen und geben diesen traditionell bekannten Batiks etwas Modernes.

Verzeihst du mir die Kurven? Bitte…

And she even added a second one with a swan print

Aylins’ Pillow made from only solids made me curious how these blocks are done …

… and the backside of the pillow is as beautiful as the front, especially the straight quilted lines.

Look at Christine’s Pillow. Would you ever have guessed that these cute little quilted leaves are only her second free motion quilting project? I think they look perfect and should encourage everyone to give free motion quilting a try. To enhance the letters they are worked out using trapunto! Wow

And ladies, if you think this pillow with rounded shapes, a flower motive and a soft color scheme is made from Danielle or Dena or Diane – you failed. I’m proud to count DAN, a male!!! quilter, in my Pillow Talk! Head over to Dan’s blog “Piece and press” and you will be astonished what surprising things this man makes, who seems to think always a bit outside the box!

Kirsten from Gemini Stitches seems to share my love of lettered fabrics (Sweetwater has always some in their collections) and made a HST Pillow from Authentic complimenting her bed quilt (don’t miss the post with her great quilt).

Wow, and then another BEAUTIFUL lettered pillow which Kerry from verrberrykerry submitted (wish it would be mine). She has a great stash of Japanese fabrics and does all sorts of special projects with them. See more on her blog.

Last but not least Elaine brings the warmth of the last sunny October days into a room with her pillow Renaissance ribbons.
They are made from Fassett ribbons and she even sells kits on her etsy shop.

You know what – I’m too glad that I didn’t have to be a judge and can instead ask the linky fairy for some help to draw a winner.
