Seminal British artist Terry Smith discusses his work in this short film I created. From cutting into the plaster of derelict buildings to bleaching away words he has written on paper, Smith's work is medium-led and singular in style. Recently his choral projects have taken him across the world, yet he continues to hunt domestic spaces in which to sculpt his iconic plaster cutouts on the walls. In this interview Smith discusses his process and what makes the work dear to him.

I conducted this interview just before Smith's first major retrospective, a landmark show currently still on at the John Hansard Gallery, Southampton until January 21st 2012. Please note this film is composed of highlights, there is a longer, far more in depth version of the interview (audio only, as broadcast) on the Resonance104.4fm podcast page.

Audio and wordy site feed

SATURDAY 19 NOVEMBER

THE JOHN HANSARD GALLERY, SOUTHAMPTON

The first comprehensive retrospective of works by UK artist Terry Smith who since 1978, has produced major projects for the Tate Modern, British Museum, all over the world.

Despite the size and breadth of these projects Smith's work - often incidental site-specific pieces or cuttings directly into the wall plaster of buildings - is rarely seen.

One reason for this is that many of the works are largely undocumented performances, or temporary pieces in building sites where there is limited, if any, access. Also Smith concentrates regularly on projects abroad: Venuzuela, Palestine, Mexico, Albania, Brazil etc. Significantly Smith's exhibitions are usually as part of a group exhibition, or a solo show focused on one work, so this is the first time he brings together a cross section of all his works spanning his entire career: video, audio, sculpture, installation, drawings and interventions in once place.

Winner of the Paul Hamlyn award, Smith had a communist upbringing and his work is at times renegade, with resonances of the London streets where he grew up in, his love of music, spontaneity and the challenges that come with experiment. Detectible also are the overtones of socialism in his Free Art School projects and certain more emotionally and ethically driven work. At Frieze this year Adam Curtis implored the artists of today to shock him with kindness, empathy and such like qualities. Perhaps he is one of many who still haven't heard of Smith, the artist's artist.

Smith's artist statement reads: "I have written many statements, all of them seem OK at the time, but when I reread them months later, I can not help but get depressed. To spare myself this misery, all I can say is, make up your own mind, whatever you think is true, probably is."

The audio is from one of my late journeys on boat and foot while working at the Venice Biennial this year.

The album, a statement and monument to collaboration and community, brings together works selected from short unedited recordings gleaned from artists, musicians and the general public across the globe.

Spheruleus and Pleq sensitively weave together an eclectic selection of field recordings, samples, spoken word pieces and instrumentation, creating momentous emotional landscapes for the listener, delicate, tender moments and most of all, a yearning tumult of haunting quietude: a silent, swaying breath.

All profits raised by sales of this album go towards assisting those that have lost their homes and livelihoods and to provideopportunities for philanthropy, creative expression and collaboration within local community projects.
October is increasingly becoming the month of what is now being called 'art week', and soon most likely art-month in London.

After 6 years of participation from within the fair this is the first year we are taking stock and observing from without. My, it's calm!

Interestingly the Frieze begins to look a lot better from the outside, what with the not-for-profit projects and the satellite events lighting up London like no Fashion week could. Why does London not have a biennial? What does this large commercial fair say about us, about the UK art scene? How if at all, are we participating and as voyeurs, what are we seeing?

These and more are the questions thrown up on tonight and tomorrow's panel discussions. Tonight from 8-9pm I'm joined, in no particular order by the director of MOT International, EBand Flow Gallery, The Cynthia Corbett Gallery and The Aubin Gallery. Tomorrow Gasworks, Camden Arts Centre and the Mica Gallery. Wednesday we may well be airing the interviews I've collected from this year's Emdash Award winner Anahita Razmi and The Frieze sculpture park curator: David Thorp. Thursday we'll be hearing from Frieze Frame participant Laure Provost and by Friday I'll have made one of those scintillating audio-tasters I've been creating over the years from The Frieze, Art Dubai, Zoo Art Fair, The Art Car Boot Fair and the like.
Highlights of the first hour, a show focused on dance music, have been 80's pirate radio and Brazilian fringe icon Patrick Forge live in the studio, not to mention the reams of great and very global music thrown up by research. We've played tracks from Chile, Bosnia, Venezuela, Serbia and so on. We featured tracks by 14 year old American school kids as well as latest album releases from reputable labels. We've played tracks from computer games, composed with Baudelaire poetry, mash ups of cartoons, up tempo, down tempo - an unpublished playlist as varied as each and every one of our listeners.

The news is we've begun sending out the first half to a largely Iranian audience via the web. Pirate Radio Arazel is a well established internet station based in Canada but collating shows from all over the world. In Iran censorship is such that modern music is banned, even some forms of classical and folk music are banned and women still cannot perform in public solo. I find this interesting as although rock music and electronic dance music continues to be banned in Iran, the instruments for making said musical styles remain on sale in full view in the capital Tehran, or perhaps they imagine a classical orchestra with drum kit and electric guitar? Good for them, why not?! With internet and satellite filtering, musical styles have only reached Iran sporadically, resulting in some rather overbearing genres dominating the underground band scene in Iran, and little else coming out.

Perhaps with music stations like this going in, we'll find some more exciting and innovative styles coming out. Click the image below to grab the first episode.
This live piece, performed on Sound Art Radio, Devon would go well with the paper I presented at Rebranding Feminism Conference last year. Have a listen, and see if you can imagine what the paper dealt with. Most of the sounds are made with my mouth.

She will miss the red brick chimney tops
the converging bird duos, green leafy patches pointing to the blue
and speckled sky which is
sometimes pink, or a double rainbow once she caught from this view
even the distant council block she will miss
reflecting the burning sunset back at her
and the nearby old jam factory chimney
a tribute to hand-operated industry
now flats too expensive to enjoy
like this one, that she will miss
no more office roof parties to look out onto amused
no more council flat barbeques where
African women sing to themselves on late Saturday afternoons
as they turn butcher's meat over the convereted oil barrels
and their children shout orders at each other in mock games
she was part of this cross section of space where
a lifelong smoker frequents only that corner of his garden
to convene daily with his beloved solace
and will so miss waking up to seagulls spilled over from a choppy river
the dropouts in the park below
excitedly expressing their drunkeness in unified banter on early afternoons
till the community police ask them to move on and
the lady who tends the public garden with her mug of tea perched atop a post
the children in pyjamas who speak secretly on early evenings from window to window
when they should be in bed
near the council flats where a man once killed his children
because his mind was in so much turmoil
he forgot his purpose, forgot his role
the neighbours all were silent and lay flowers
and the jasmine still overgrows the wall
the honeysuckle still offers up flowers each summer
only yards from where a boy was killed in broad daylight
with a machete by kids his age
only yards from where another crime once took place
and she still walks home
because they are mixed here
they know
there is a little bit of each community represented here
they balance each other out
they live side by side
reacting to the same waves of news
looking upon the same moon in the same sky
tending the same streets
frequenting the same spaces
hearing each other's sounds
familiar with each other's faces,
now no more. She will go elsewhere and pick up on other traces
and here it will all go on
better but as before.

Audio and wordy site feed

While the protest movement thrives and politics take centre stage, it seems we are living in the early 1900's as posters of monks and sweet old nonnas fill wall spaces where they once no doubt passed.

Translation:

"On the 4th June, embraced by Sister Death was: "Alfonso (Aldo) Manfren". The day and church of the funeral is given with an open invitation.

"Let's snuff out the nuclear programme. NO to fraud, YES to the referendum."

"Let's stay human. The freedom flotilla is leaving for Gaza and the Caravan of Ya Basta (Enough is Enough) returns from Tunisia."

"Nuclear programme: Let's put a cross. Let's end nuclear energy."

"The 30th May, lost to her loved ones is: Gnoato Gina." Widowed: Voltolina, 97 years old." Cute name Gnoato! Must come from gnosis, to know...

"Referendum, 12 and 13th June, Vote Yes. Water, should not be sold."

I found all this quite invigorating, after all, it was in this week that the Scarafaggio, Berlusconi, was voted out in three major cities for the first time. The Italians themselves were excited, and a light was there for them at the end of a long tunnel of swindling, lies and degradation.

I prepared by gutting an ordinary bag and giving it the limbs and portals it needed to hold a small projector. It was the intention to disguise the bag as a distinctly Italian object, using similar materials I use for my sound sculpture. Since the sculptures are about bringing the sound alive to you (in fact enlivening the part of you that responds to the sound), I felt the two branches were perfectly in tune; the Venice interventions being concerned with the appropriation of space and the mental state that makes something art, and the mental positioning we adopt that makes a country part of our identity.

So a team of us went out to meet Venice with "17 Unsent Postcards", films by the artists who had been selected to show at Biennial 2011 before the Lebanese national pavilion fell through. What was the result? One Neapolitan we met allowed me to project onto his back as he walked along, another Italian group stopped and during their inquiry one of them told me not only had he never seen anything from Lebanon in his life, he had never been inside an art gallery to see any art. We met an Venetian who had a Lebanese great-grandfather he was overjoyed, he said to both us and his entourage, to find this presence on the streets. It was super dynamics with Venice's dark waterways and worn walls complete with aeons of public communiques really creating the perfect setting. A culture where people do not hide behind car windows and highways, where everyone is walking at the same level, the same pace, the same routes....but still draw visible lines between the haves and have nots, and host the art world's most exclusive show of wealth and position.
