This article indicates how lucky we were to avoid a true disaster.

Here's how the article closes:

Government's failure to perform this role in the early 1930s transformed recession into depression. Scholars will debate which interventions this time—the Federal Reserve's support of a failing credit system, the TARP, guarantees of bank debt, Obama's "stimulus" plan and bank "stress test"—counted most in preventing a recurrence. Regardless, all these complex measures had the same psychological purpose: to reassure people that the free fall would stop and, thereby, curb the fear that would perpetuate a free fall. Confidence had to be restored so that the economy's normal recovery mechanisms could operate. That seems to have happened. By September, the Consumer Confidence Index had rebounded to 53.1. Housing prices had stopped falling. By the Case-Shiller index, they've increased for three months.

But this improved confidence is not optimism. It is the absence of terror. The consumer sentiment index is still weak, and all the rebound has occurred in Americans' evaluation of future economic conditions, not the present. Unemployment (9.8 percent) is abysmal, the recovery's strength unclear. Here, too, there is an echo from the 1930s. Despite bottoming out in 1933, the Depression didn't end until World War II. Some government policies aided recovery; some impeded it. The good news today is that the bad news is not worse.

I can see, everyone's still on edge over the current situation. People aren't spending as much as before, aren't investing as before...and businesses are the same.

And so are the wife and I. I have my concerns that we will slip back into a second recession soon, perhaps after Christmas, when the sun is dim, the nights are long, moods are dark, and Christmas credit card bill need payment.

We've recently invested in a condo in Surrey BC Canada, not too far from my parents. We arranged the mortgage to have small monthly payments, with the option for large yearly payments. If things go well, we can pay off the condo in 5 years. If not, we can survive on our savings, and live in the condo, for two years, while unemployed.

Frugal and careful times, these.

"Who watches the Watchmen?"

We watched Watchmen a while ago, and I've watched it again a couple of times. The film is based upon a graphic novel by the same name. The story explores the character traps that superheroes, and the societies they protect, can fall into.

The heroes are all too human: a macho-man who tries to rape one of his fellow superheroes, and glories in the killing fields of Vietnam; a child abuse victim who hides behind his ski mask and metes out brutal justice to brutal criminals; a glowing-blue former scientist who can manipulate space and time, but can't understand people; the younger woman who became a superhero out of hero-worship; the spectacled liberal who wonders what his band of superheroes fights for, when society seems to turn against them; and the brightest man of the age, who feels the only way to turn society away from the brink is to trick them into banding together in common cause against a mortal threat.

The story is set in an alternative history setting: a version of the mid-1980s, in which Nixon is still in power (thanks to victory in Vietnam, thanks to our heroes). Society is still violent, and crying out for heroes, but our heroes have been outlawed due to their own abuses of their power. The world is on the brink of nuclear Armageddon. As the story opens, one of the superheroes is murdered in his apartment. All of these elements are woven together, as our heroes try to untangle them, and save themselves and the world.

The feel of the film is dark and gritty. Often-times the world in which superheroes are set in, seems to glamorous and sterile, and if the world was really that way, why would we need superheroes? Like Batman Begins, Watchmen portrays the gritty side of society...and the compromises that the superhero makes in making his or her way through that society.

The film is definitely worth watching. I understand the DVD has extra footage not seen in the theatrical release, so enjoy! ...and think about the messages.

a late apology...but still a deserved apology

Treatment of Alan Turing was “appalling” - PM | Number10.gov.uk

2009 has been a year of deep reflection - a chance for Britain, as a nation, to commemorate the profound debts we owe to those who came before. A unique combination of anniversaries and events have stirred in us that sense of pride and gratitude which characterise the British experience. Earlier this year I stood with Presidents Sarkozy and Obama to honour the service and the sacrifice of the heroes who stormed the beaches of Normandy 65 years ago. And just last week, we marked the 70 years which have passed since the British government declared its willingness to take up arms against Fascism and declared the outbreak of World War Two. So I am both pleased and proud that, thanks to a coalition of computer scientists, historians and LGBT activists, we have this year a chance to mark and celebrate another contribution to Britain’s fight against the darkness of dictatorship; that of code-breaker Alan Turing.

Turing was a quite brilliant mathematician, most famous for his work on breaking the German Enigma codes. It is no exaggeration to say that, without his outstanding contribution, the history of World War Two could well have been very different. He truly was one of those individuals we can point to whose unique contribution helped to turn the tide of war. The debt of gratitude he is owed makes it all the more horrifying, therefore, that he was treated so inhumanely. In 1952, he was convicted of ‘gross indecency’ - in effect, tried for being gay. His sentence - and he was faced with the miserable choice of this or prison - was chemical castration by a series of injections of female hormones. He took his own life just two years later.

Thousands of people have come together to demand justice for Alan Turing and recognition of the appalling way he was treated. While Turing was dealt with under the law of the time and we can’t put the clock back, his treatment was of course utterly unfair and I am pleased to have the chance to say how deeply sorry I and we all are for what happened to him. Alan and the many thousands of other gay men who were convicted as he was convicted under homophobic laws were treated terribly. Over the years millions more lived in fear of conviction.

I am proud that those days are gone and that in the last 12 years this government has done so much to make life fairer and more equal for our LGBT community. This recognition of Alan’s status as one of Britain’s most famous victims of homophobia is another step towards equality and long overdue.

But even more than that, Alan deserves recognition for his contribution to humankind. For those of us born after 1945, into a Europe which is united, democratic and at peace, it is hard to imagine that our continent was once the theatre of mankind’s darkest hour. It is difficult to believe that in living memory, people could become so consumed by hate - by anti-Semitism, by homophobia, by xenophobia and other murderous prejudices - that the gas chambers and crematoria became a piece of the European landscape as surely as the galleries and universities and concert halls which had marked out the European civilisation for hundreds of years. It is thanks to men and women who were totally committed to fighting fascism, people like Alan Turing, that the horrors of the Holocaust and of total war are part of Europe’s history and not Europe’s present.

So on behalf of the British government, and all those who live freely thanks to Alan’s work I am very proud to say: we’re sorry, you deserved so much better.

Gordon Brown

I think the apology comes from all of us, really.

More about Alan Turing and his contributions to our world here.

Bloom County lives!

IDW Publishing | The home of 30 Days of Night, Star Trek, Terminator, Transformers, G.I. They were quite possibly the last of their kind. Elsewhere in Europe and western Asia, Neandertals had disappeared thousands of years earlier, after having ruled for more than 200,000 years. The Iberian Peninsula, with its comparatively mild climate and rich array of animals and plants, seems to have been the final stronghold. Soon, however, the Gibraltar population, too, would die out, leaving behind only a smattering of their stone tools and the charred remnants of their campfires.

Definitely worth glancing through.

escapee from Doctor Who

 escapee from Doctor Who
Originally uploaded by teflonjedi.
Snapped this photo with my mobile phone a few weeks ago. A talented man and artist...how much of what he became is because of himself, and how much because of us? Perhaps we should take a close look at ourselves, in the mirror.

The news broke as I was heading to work Thursday morning, here in China. As I told my Chinese colleagues in the car, they were stunned. My wife sent me an SMS later in the morning, as she heard the news. Truly, the man had an international reach and pull. I'm sure that, with time, all the crazy stories will fade, and we'll be left with our memories of his great music, and how he affected popular culture.

<span Originally uploaded by teflonjedi.
I spent a few days in Munich, a couple of weeks ago. I was at the Audio Engineering Society 126th Convention...though I did manage to sneak away for a few hours to see Munich itself, and photos will be forthcoming later on that point.

I participated on a workshop panel, discussing loudspeaker computer-aided advanced modelling techniques, examining how well the software works these days, and what's needed to make the modelling results more accurate. There were a lot of good questions and points raised by the audience, so I feel the workshop was a success.

I'm happy I was able to do this. In these economic times, it's hard for anyone to get approval to go anywhere, from any company. I have the sense that the convention was sparsely attended, compared to attendance in normal times.

another xkcd moment

xkcd - A Webcomic - Outreach

It's another "Jaws" moment, brought to life...

Twitterin' away...

I've been using twitter for some time now. I saw it and picked it up in Heathrow Airport, while trapped there a couple of months ago. It tells the tale of the war between France and her allies, and Britain and her allies...starting with the Frence Revolution and ending with the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, and his subsequent exile.

I have to say, I learned an enormous amount by reading this book. Let me give some examples...

English, and European, society was more sexual than I would have expected, with various scandalous relationships widely known by the public. For instance, Admiral Lord Nelson had a long public relationship with a beautiful young lady who was not his wife. Princesses and queens seemed to offer themselves up in order to try to save their nations from Napoleon and his cronies.

France mounted serious efforts under Napoleon to invade the British Isles.

Napoleon's escapades in Egypt, against the Ottoman Empire, left him stranded, as his huge fleet was pretty much at anchor at the Battle of the Nile.

The French Revolution was started by French minor noblemen and aristocrats because the French King attempted to balance his budget and tax, not the poor so much, but the aristocrats.

The Duke of Wellington was a brilliant general who won his battles by taking defensive positions and then drawing in his opponents.

The scope of death in this long struggle amounts to 10% of the population of Europe at the time.

The picture painted of Napoleon as a character is striking. Some aspects of his character reminded me a little of myself. I don't speak of the megalomania, or the mastery of propoganda, or the many mistresses, or the skill on the battlefield under adverse circumstances. Rather's it's the early Napoleon: good at math, family-oriented, facing much career adversity, somewhat shy with the ladies, and somewhat suspicious of religion.

The evolution of warfare styles is clearly obvious, from the innovations that Carnot and Napoleon brought to the table at the beginning of the war, to how those innovations evolved and stopped serving Napoleon well by the end. Sea warfare tactics are aptly illustrated as well.

The book does an excellent job of tying all elements of the story together, and truly painting a picture of characters, tactics, and life for all involved during this epic struggle. It's definitely worth a read, if you can handle a book of this size (832 pages), and if you are interested in Napoleonic history.

Next stop for me in this genre: Winston Churchill.

Hockey sea-saw

NHL western conference standings 2009 Apr 04
Originally uploaded by teflonjedi.
Been listening to the Saturday night Vancouver Canucks hockey game, by internet radio, on my Sunday mornings. Malta is one of these micronations whose existence I've found interesting recently. I read about Malta this past fall, in a magazine I picked up during my travels. The article was regarding expats who had relocated to live on various islands, and the associated costs. For a little while, I contemplated what would be involved with relocating to Malta, should the world economy worsen further, because the costs were cheap. I couldn't quite figure out what I would do for a living in Malta, though.

Anyways, the leading lines from the article from National Geographic, on tunnels unearthed underneath Malta's major city:

For centuries it's been said that the crusading Knights of Malta constructed an underground city on the Mediterranean island of Malta, sparking rumors of secret carriageways and military labyrinths.

Now a tunnel network has been uncovered beneath the historic heart of the Maltese capital of Valletta, researchers say. But the tunnels—likely from an ahead-of-its-time water system—may render previous theories all wet.

Enjoy!

Music round-up, March 2009

 music march 2009
Originally uploaded by teflonjedi.
I picked up this set of thumbnails representing my listening patterns from my last.fm account last weekend.

I've travelled a fair bit in the past year, and sometimes worked on the weekends in the office, so I've listened to certain albums repeatedly, and this appears to have shown up in the statistics.

These days, I'm spending a lot of my time listening to the Tori Amos album "Scarlet's Walk". It's another Tori Amos album I'm really enjoying...I don't think I should have ever stopped listening to her, at the beginning of the decade. I never stopped liking her work, but I was with someone at the time that didn't appreciate it the same way I did. I picked up this album, along with another Tori Amos album, the last time we were in Hong Kong, and I expect I'll be listening to this album for a few more months, before pulling out the second album and putting it into rotation.

The coming sea change?

The Atlantic Online | March 2009 | How the Crash Will Reshape America | Richard Florida

This is an interesting article which says what are likely to be some unpleasant truths about how life in the US is going to change as a consequence of the current economic unpleasantness. This article is worth reading. Here's some interesting quotes.

This concern seems overheated. In his sweeping history, Capitals of Capital, the economic historian Youssef Cassis chronicles the rise and decline of global financial centers through recent centuries. Though the history is long, it contains little drama: major shifts in capitalist power centers occur at an almost geological pace.

Amsterdam stood at the center of the world’s financial system in the 17th century; its place was taken by London in the early 19th century, then New York in the 20th. Across more than three centuries, no other city has topped the list of global financial centers. Financial capitals have “remarkable longevity,” Cassis writes, “in spite of the phases of boom and bust in the course of their existence.”

The transition from one financial center to another typically lags behind broader shifts in the economic balance of power, Cassis suggests. Although the U.S. displaced England as the world’s largest economy well before 1900, it was not until after World War II that New York eclipsed London as the world’s preeminent financial center (and even then, the eclipse was not complete; in recent years, London has, by some measures, edged out New York). As Asia has risen, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Singapore have become major financial centers—yet in size and scope, they still trail New York and London by large margins.

I had forgotten that Amsterdam had been the leading financial power in the world, in the now-distant past.

Worldwide, people are crowding into a discrete number of mega-regions, systems of multiple cities and their surrounding suburban rings like the Boston–New York–Washington Corridor. In North America, these mega-regions include SunBelt centers like the Char-Lanta Corridor, Northern and Southern California, the Texas Triangle of Houston–San Antonio–Dallas, and Southern Florida’s Tampa-Orlando-Miami area; the Pacific Northwest’s Cascadia, stretching from Portland through Seattle to Vancouver; and both Greater Chicago and Tor-Buff-Chester in the old Rust Belt. Internationally, these mega-regions include Greater London, Greater Tokyo, Europe’s Am-Brus-Twerp, China’s Shanghai-Beijing Corridor, and India’s Bangalore-Mumbai area. Economic output is ever-more concentrated in these places as well. The world’s 40 largest mega-regions, which are home to some 18 percent of the world’s population, produce two-thirds of global economic output and nearly 9 in 10 new patented innovations.

Some (though not all) of these mega-regions have a clear hub, and these hubs are likely to be better buffered from the crash than most cities, because of their size, diversity, and regional role. Chicago has emerged as a center for industrial management and has rolled up many of the functions, such as finance and law, once performed in smaller midwestern centers. Los Angeles has a broad, diverse economy with global strength in media and entertainment. Miami, which is being hit hard by the collapse of the real-estate bubble, nonetheless remains the commercial center for the large South Florida mega-region, and a major financial center for Latin America. Each of these places is the financial and commercial core of a large mega-region with tens of millions of people and hundreds of billions of dollars in output. That’s not going to change as a result of the crisis.

I'm thinking that Guangzhou-Shenzhen-HongKong is one of these mega-cities or corridors...but with its strengths still developing.

Big, talent-attracting places benefit from accelerated rates of “urban metabolism,” according to a pioneering theory of urban evolution developed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers affiliated with the SantaFe Institute. The rate at which living things convert food into energy—their metabolic rate—tends to slow as organisms increase in size. But when the Santa Fe team examined trends in innovation, patent activity, wages, and GDP, they found that successful cities, unlike biological organisms, actually get faster as they grow. In order to grow bigger and overcome diseconomies of scale like congestion and rising housing and business costs, cities must become more efficient, innovative, and productive. The researchers dubbed the extraordinarily rapid metabolic rate that successful cities are able to achieve “super-linear” scaling. “By almost any measure,” they wrote, “the larger a city’s population, the greater the innovation and wealth creation per person.” Places like New York with finance and media, Los Angeles with film and music, and Silicon Valley with hightech are all examples of high-metabolism places.

Metabolism and talent-clustering are important to the fortunes of U.S. city-regions in good times, but they’re even more so when times get tough. It’s not that “fast” cities are immune to the failure of businesses, large or small. (One of the great lessons of the 1873 crisis—and of this one so far—is that when credit freezes up and a long slump follows, companies can fail unpredictably, no matter where they are.) It’s that unlike many other places, they can overcome business failures with relative ease, reabsorbing their talented workers, growing nascent businesses, founding new ones.

Economic crises tend to reinforce and accelerate the underlying, long-term trends within an economy. Our economy is in the midst of a fundamental long-term transformation—similar to that of the late 19th century, when people streamed off farms and into new and rising industrial cities. In this case, the economy is shifting away from manufacturing and toward idea-driven creative industries—and that, too, favours America’s talent-rich, fast-metabolizing places.

I feel the same way. The current economic difficulties are going to result in a great sea change in the way we all live. Regions of the planet will change their economic focus, or start to shrivel and diminish, or both. The way of life in the recent past is about to change, for all of us.
