So before I forget…

During the course of the UH women's volleyball season, I ran into Matt Mokiao several times at the Stan Sheriff Center while he was off duty from his State responsibilities. He's still doing quite well from the looks of it, having acquired privileges to sit in one of the VIP sections on the floor level.

Ward and Iris (Nakamura) Takamiya are also frequent familiar faces in the crowd at Wahine volleyball. I got a chance to chat with them one night after a match and meet their kids.

More recently at men's volleyball, I was surprised to see Sandy Kinoshita working at one of the concession stands with her non-profit group. She hasn't seen too many of her old friends, but wants to say Hi to everyone.

One of my best buds in school, Fred Badua, is a huge fan and staunch supporter of UH volleyball (both Rainbow Wahine & Warriors). Twice already this men's season, he's won Bank of Hawaii's Fantastic Seats where the winner and a guest get to sit courtside right behind the team bench! The first time his girlfriend's name was called, the second his. Coincidence? Certainly not. Some people have joked with me that the drawings were rigged&#8230 8-) Just to set the record straight, I have no influence whatsoever in any contest or promotion nor do I possess any authority or perks at any UH event (although free parking would be nice).

My youngest sister happens to work with Stan Acedo's wife. Stan and his kids stopped by her office one day to surprise his wife on her birthday. Stan and my sister had a very nice chat and the topic of our 30th reunion came up. With my current commitments, I no longer have the time or resources to contribute to such a monumental task. If there's anyone willing to take the lead, Sharolyn Kawakami-Lizama says she wants to help!

Finally, Steve Arcio says Hi from sunny SoCal! IIRC, he's preparing his son to be his relief driver on an upcoming family road trip to Las Vegas. That's if young Mr. Arcio can pass his driver's test first. Ah, the beauty of the open road. Good luck and best wishes!

That's a wrap. Until next time, may the wind be at your back and the sun shine brightly on you and your family!

Personal Update

Before I end up pulling an all-nighter, I thought I'd write something since it's been almost 2 months since the last post.

Had a chance to hook up with Gary Mata a few weeks back at the Farrington vs. McKinley girls basketball game @ FHS gym. His daughter, Natalie, is one of the starting guards and had a monster game that night. Tonight (2/4) is Senior Night and Natalie will be one of the players to be honored after the game.

I know there's many of you out there who haven't paid a visit to the school since graduation or seen Gary in a while. Why not stop by to support the #1-ranked Lady Govs and catch up with Gary, too?! I think he's getting tired of seeing my old, ugly face… 8-) And if you do make it to the game, remember to bring along a camera. (Hint, hint, wink, wink: send me a few pics to post on our blog!)

Anyway, I finished building my custom PC a couple of days before Christmas and am blogging from this outrageously fast monster right now. Insane! I do have pictures, but not ready to post yet. It's also running on bare bones software for the time being as I wait to save up enough money for new stuff to run on 64-bit Windows XP Pro.

By the way, I took my first crack at overclocking with this machine. On a Core2 Extreme quad core processor, I managed to go from 3.0 GHz to 3.84 GHz. Not bad for a noob.

Well, time to go to bed now! It's past 3:30 in the morning and got a lot more to do when I wake up some time before noon like checking on The Govs Ohana site - farrington.thepeoplebridge.com, updating farringtonhighschool.org and a highly classified, top secret project for FHS. Until next time, peace be with you!

PS. If you don't hear from me before the 14th, Happy Valentine's Day!

'79 Bloggers Update

Where Have We Been?

The gang and I have been away for so long, we pretty much left this blog for dead. GOI and Ali have been busy with their careers and families and have had little time to feed their creative side.

Me? I just started a new career this past summer, moving full-time into the tech world working mainly on developing websites. It feels great to be getting paid for something that started out as a hobby!

I learned a lot when I first started with the old class site, then moving forward to help the Class of '81 set up their site. I got to absorb even more after spending a year as a volunteer with the Alumni Foundation's site and 2 months interning at the company of Brian Ito's younger brother. Now, I'm managing the Farrington High School site, farringtonhighschool.org. Kinda neat that I get to help our Alma Mater in more ways than I ever imagined.

Speaking of which, I decided to retire from Farrington Athletics at the end of last season because of the huge responsibility and importance in getting school news out to the community as quickly as possible. After close to 30 years with Govs sports, I thought it would be a good time to bring in fresh talent, but now it's rather quiet at home games in the gym without a P.A. announcer. If there's anyone out there who wants to give it a shot, let me know and I'll hook you up with the FHS athletic director. Who knows, it might lead to a gig with UH. Happened to me, it could happen to you!

Next up on the agenda, my first-ever custom PC build. Seeing as the system I'm blogging from is a fossil by today's standards, I felt the need to get something according to my specs and personal preferences. And since I've become discouraged with current big name manufacturers I thought, why not build my own? So, I've got all my parts and will start building an early Christmas present for myself. If I'm up to it, I'll keep you all posted and maybe even put up some photos.

Thank you all who continue to visit this blog. Though you may be small in numbers, your heart is what matters most to us here in our little corner of the blogosphere.

Oh yeah, nobody has ever mentioned anything about a 30th year reunion, at least not to me and that's understandable. At this point, there are some people who don't like me and would rather not want me involved. That's okay… I want to leave things to the people who care about it most.

If you would like to hold some kind of event, let me know as I think I'm still the "Money Man", seeing that the chairman left me “holding the bag”, so to speak. Get your friends together, start planning, contact classmates and tell me what you need as far as funds are concerned. I'll be more than happy to assist you in that regard.

Until next time, whenever that may be… Aloha & Happy Holidays!

Classmate Update

<span style="font-weight: bold; Something we should all remember...

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.

"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."

"That doesn' t have anything to do with it," he replied.

"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged .. it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. "It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.

Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away. Just for this time in my life.

Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.

So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories!

Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank.
I am still depositing." Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

Free your heart from hatred.

Free your mind from worries.

Live simply.

Give more.

Expect less.

Courtesy RW (FHS '80)

Friends of Farrington 1979

Comic Relief

Car Dog

Farrington 1979 Bloggers

FHS '79 Music Video

The B-52's
“Tell It Like It T - I - Is”
Good Stuff (1992)

*Flash Player required
**High Speed Connection recommended

Friends of Farrington 1979

Classmate Update

Clarence K. color: rgb(153, 0, 0);font-size:130%;" >Aloha & Good Luck Steve!

It's not too often we get the chance to stay in touch with classmates given our busy schedules and priorities. Since our last reunion, I'm glad to have renewed many old acquaintances and seen how much we've all grown as caring individuals. Sometimes, though, opportunities present themselves which mean leaving the comfort of Hawaii and venturing across the Pacific to experience new adventures and different cultures.

One classmate who I'll definitely miss here in the islands is Steve Arcio, a very talented guy I've known since the third grade and true friend. Within the past couple of years, I've had the pleasure of meeting his wonderful family, sharing common interests and helping him with his home computers. Now a fabulous job opportunity is taking Steve and his family to Southern California.

Before he left, Steve asked me if I knew of any classmates in San Diego and how to contact them. The answer is yes, there's quite a number and I'd be more than happy to help. If you're currently living in San Diego or nearby areas and would like to get in touch with Steve, send me an email or use the "Contact Us" link in the menu bar.

Best wishes Steve! We know the move isn't permanent. Time will pass and you'll be back getting ready for your next Century Bike Ride. Until your return to the land of Aloha, "Keep sharing a piece of the Aloha Spirit because a little Aloha goes a long way."

Farrington 1979 Bloggers

FHS '79 Inspiration

Never Let You Fall

Friends of Farrington 1979

FHS '79 Music Video

Chet Atkins, George Benson & Earl Klugh
“Manha de Carnival”
1978

Former students in Mr. Y's advanced Polynesian Instrumental Ensemble class should remember this. Scattered remnants of the original Bishop Memorial Chapel still lie quietly and reverently on the Farrington grounds, their exact location unknown. Which is why the Farrington 1979 Bloggers feel it is appropriate to share this news with you.

While XT and I are not of Hawaiian ancestry, we do share many friends who attended elementary and intermediate school with us that went on to graduate from Kamehameha Schools.

Some of you may remember Mikey Kaleponi, an outstanding multi-sport athlete for the Warriors, from Kaewai Elementary or Dole Intermediate. What about Kapalama Elementary and Kalakaua Intermediate classmate, Keoni Brown, a wonderful musician and athlete as well.

There are also many Farrington alumni and classmates who are intimately associated with the Kapalama campus today like softball assistant coach Richard Titcomb (FHS '79), athletics booster club volunteer Willie Danielson (FHS '81) and Alfredo Torco (FHS '57), whose son was an outstanding athlete at Kamehameha.

Also, FHS '79 classmates - Matt Mokiao, whose son is a 2006 Kamehameha graduate and former member of the Warriors' basketball team and Deidre (Cabinatan) Self, her youngest daughter was an all-state guard on Kamehameha's state championship girls basketball team in the '90s and is now an assistant coach for the Warriors' girls Division I squad after a stellar collegiate career at Loyola-Marymount.

We are forever grateful to Kamehameha Schools. For without their generosity, Farrington High School would not exist today. Our hearts go out to all of our native Hawaiian brethren on this momentous occasion. May the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop continue to help their children and future generations achieve greatness in our community.

Links
Kamehameha Schools Press Release
Star-Bulletin Breaking News

Farrington 1979 Bloggers (major contribution to this article from XT)
