The most lively market place in chennai, that attracts locals as well as tourists is T. Nagar. Men abhor visiting this bazaar, fearing at the thought of their wallet thinning down and waiting for hours in shops, while the ladies have the time of the day. This market place always wears the look of a fair, busy and colourful, crowded and frenzied. Just a stroll around the place is good enough to capture the life at T.Nagar and you will surely be tempted to buy something that you might not have intended to. Though being chennaite for the past 24 years, I rarely shop here, but when I do, then I enjoy every bit of it. T. Nagar is famous for its jewellery shops, silk sarees and textiles that draws people from all walks of life, especially wedding and festival seasons brings in a huge crowd that literally rocks T.Nagar, when the shopping spirit is at its highest peak. Besides all those glittering, multi storey buildings, the shops on the pavement is a major attraction for the pedestrians and they play an important role in attracting the middle class shoppers. The most popular, forever crowded Ranganathan Street and it also happened to be my first visit to this street. Not being an avid shopper for gold or silk sarees and the fact that, shopping in heavily crowded place is not my style, T. Nagar has always evaded my interest. On less crowded days, it’s fun to do window shopping, walking leisurely, snacking now and then and totally blend in with the fellow shoppers.

Mahabalipuram

Mahabaliburam, initially called as 'Thiru kadal puram', a place along the sea shore, was later named as ‘Maha - bali - puram' apparently denoting the sacrifices that took place before any embarkments the kings took on. It was later changed to 'Ma-malla-puram' after the warriors of the narashiman era. Tiger cave, Arjunas penance, Sea Shore Temple, are few of the many, rock sculptures that will enthral the visitors. It’s a place that is known for its sculptures on rocks depicting various styles of architecture and many incredible works that will not fail to capture an artists attention. Apart from temples, rock cut mandapams were sculpted, apparently for meditation purpose. The temple architecture stands as a witness that this place has been an important port, as the pillars, lion faces, and the inverted boat shaped tops bears a close resemblence to the architecture from Rome and East Asia. It also happens to be the second largest rock cut temple to be built, next to, the one in Angkorwat and you can see a lot of similarities in their architecture as well. If visiting mamallapuram go informed about the place, as that will give a better understanding of the sculptures and the importance associated with it.
These informations given here is based on what my guide gave us when we visited Mamallapuram and sometimes it differs from person to person and the information given here is just a pinch from what it actually holds to be told.
Other than the beholding experience of visiting one of a kind monument that stands as an example of the extraordinary artistic ability of south indians, it is very upsetting to note that the people employed there, like the person who issues ticket or the entrance guard is not a south Indian and who proudly says I don’t speak tamil, I speak only hindi or english. I don’t think a tamilian will be able to say the same, if he were to be employed in Mumbai or Delhi. Should, all the people who come far and wide from all over Tamil nadu know to speak hindi and english to get help and seek entry from an hindi speaking guard? I have no grudge against hindi speaking people or north Indians, but being in Tamilnadu, visiting a monument that speaks about tamil architecture, I wish to approach a person who understands my language for any clarifications and I guess that is what people from Tamil nadu would wish too.

There’s a temple, large rocks like this one below and a few more that were exposed during the recent Tsunami.

This place was actually used as a stage by the king to sit and watch dance performances.

The back side of the tiger faced mandapam, which looks like a gorilla. I wonder if it was intentionally carved out to look like a gorilla or it's just my imagination.

Arjuna’s penance

This rock sculpture depicts the story of Arjuna’s penance. As the story goes, Arjuna decides to penance seeking the weapon in Lord Shiva’s hand to fight the demons and so does many others who join him in his penance, which he finally does and wins the war and brings peace. There are so many minute details, that may go unnoticed unless you are told. At the far end of the of the picture there’s a sculpture of a two monkeys busy grooming.

This sculpture is done in two segments, with the centre carved out to allow the flow of water, which is blocked now to preserve the sculptures.

Pink arrow points to starved Arjuna in the state of penance and the white arrow points to Lord shiva with the weapon.

Many other people who joined the penance includes headless people and on a teasing note there’s also a cat penancing with many rats by its side, making use of the situation. The pink arrow points to the cat, the red arrow points the rats, the blue arrow points to the headless people and the white points to a pair of deers that impressed former Prime minister Indira Gandhi during her visit here and she ordered the picture of the two deers to be imprinted in 10 rupee note of the Indian currency( It can been seen in the old 10 rupee note).

Krishna Mandapam:
It’s a portrayal of Krishna holding the roof held high above and protecting his people. The scuptures themselves are nothing but a village scene immortalised in these rocks, with the daily chores of the people and their life brought alive by the skilful work of the sculptor.

One good example that reveals the talent of the South Indian scuptor is the bull at the far end of the picture on the left side. There’s a small gap behind the forelimb of the bull that one can actually put through a hand. Beautifully carved out of the wall yet attached to the figure, complete with a smooth finish, it is not only amazing but a very difficult task to perform.

One more marvel on a stone that looks like a single figure, but actually has two figures. On the first look it looks like a cow and its calf, if the head of the cow is marred, you can see an elephant and its calf.

Ganesh Ratham that reveals three different types of architecture, with the roof top that looks like an inverted boat, step by step vimana and pillars.

This place is called as Krishna’s kitchen and it is believed to be used for cooking purpose, as the marks on the rock supports the idea.

The 'Madras Crocodile Bank' situated on the East Coast Road, enroute to Mahabaliburam, is a non government environmental organisation, started in the year 1976 by Rom Whitaker. It is a sanctuary for different species of crocodiles and the first crocodile breeding centre to be established in asia. The centre has a huge number of crocodiles, some turtles and snakes, a hard task taken with passion, to conserve the endangered reptiles, that are on the verge of extinction.

The Irula tribe who once hunted snakes for a living and have a good knowledge about snakes , have now been employed by the government to catch the snakes to breed and extract venom which is used to make anti-dote. The venom extraction is demonstrated to the public in the centre, established by the government, which is also situated in the Crocodile Bank.

The biggest salt water crocodile named Jaws III, the main attraction in the centre, failed to show its face and stayed immersed in the water. Crocodiles, Gharials, Alligators, see them basking in the sun like rocks or if you are at the feeding time, then be lucky to watch this exciting moment, when all the crocodiles from the land and from water emerge and move towards the feeding place to get their first catch. Addition of a green anaconda is on the cards, another bold attempt by the centre, to attract more visitors.

Chennai Snake Park

When young, a visit to the snake park used to be very exciting and a bit scary too, to see that many number of snakes in one place, always wondering if there’s any creeping above our head. Back then a demo was done in an open shed where people were allowed to touch the snakes, but now it is done protectively within glass walls. A king cobra which was the main attraction in the park for years, caged in that small enclosure, robbed of all its glory, is no more.
The Snake park houses some snakes, turtles, giant lizards, crocodiles, Iguana and some spotted deers. Some fortunate deers can be seen outside the park too, in the car parking area roaming around like stray dogs, seeking food from the visitors. Since it is an offence to harm deers, they happily (?) stroll around, providing some fun for kids and grown ups as well, who spoil them by feeding the salty snacks they carry. The park also has a display of a good collection of snakes floating in formaldehyde, well preserved in glass jars.
Personally, I feel these unfortunate reptiles need a better environment, rather than being caged for years. A good picture or a video, will work fine in educating the people and that will save these reptiles from this kind of torture, a deed, I think Discovery and Animal Planet channels have achieved doing it.

Cold wind and the unpredictable weather in London was initially threatening but never hindered our quest to explore this clean and expensive city. Clutching our cold jackets tight and creamy ice creams melting in our mouth, we walked on the London streets, not wanting to miss a thing, window shopping, watching beautiful women dressed in the most fashionable clothes, stopping now and then to grab a bite, and had a spectacular view of London, from the London Eye wheel. The brick buildings reminded me of the houses in hill stations like Ooty and Kodaikanal, a trace of the English colonisation in India. Feels like Lovely London beckons me again.

Marina Beach

Marina beach which covers a distance of 14 kms is the longest beach in India. Marina attracts not only tourists but also locals who take respite from the scorching summer heat and find solace in the salty wind. During weekends, the beach is packed with people, although the water is not clean and unfit to even wet our feet.

This is pattinapakkam beach, not clean, had to watch my steps. But,

Cultural performance

For the past few years, during the month of January, Chennai is revelling in the time of Pongal festival, due to the cultural performance by performers from villages, in different parts of the city. These performing arts are part of the village culture, which is performed during the harvest festival every year. Due to modernazation, the art and the artists have faded to oblivion, as the people moved to theatres and theme parks for entertainment, but it is still, alive in villages. These arts are now revived and it is a boon to the present generation in cities to witness the folk art, which they read about in text books.

The performing artist is carrying a musical instrument called "Devadandhoobi" also called "Urmi". The music from the instrument is mesmerising and is sure to make anyone watching, tap their foot. Their dance synchronises beautifully with the music and it is quite captivating.

Royapuram Fishing Harbour

Royapuram famous for the first railway station to be constructed in south India, is also popular for its fish. A visit to the Royapuram fishing harbour befor dawn, to capture the lively life there, was an exhilarating experience. The right place for fish lovers to see fish piled in little mountains in all directions, women selling fish as early as five in the morning, fishermen busily engaged in shifting the fish to the land from their canoes, men bidding on a raised voice, trying to find the best bidder and the entire area bustling with life even though it is still ‘dark'. They say the best catch can be seen as early as two 'o' clock in the morning and most of the good ones will be gone by that time. It was not only the fish that impressed me, but also the people who were lovely and they all appeared to be like one large happy family, who were very cooperative and too willing to help me in taking pictures, even though I was hindering their business. I am thankful to three people who made this possible, if not for them I wouldn’t have done it . First, two nice people, who for my quest, gave up their sleep on a sunday morning and made this visit come true and third, Deepika, who aslo let me spoil her morning and was more like a guide and helped in taking me around, so that I never missed anything interesting that came by. Thanks guys.

Dakshinachitra which means 'Picture of the south' (Dakshin - south, chitra or chitram - picture) encompasses the architecture of the South Indian Houses with a live model of each style of building. It was established by the Madras Craft Council and serves as an important centre that displays and promotes art, craft and architecture of the south. I witnessed a lot of nostalgic moments from the visitors when entering into the model of the house that reflects their native place or the house they grew up. Each house is built carefully, with minute details that reflects the original houses of the region. Some even have the utensils used in the kitchen, pooja room and the display shows the lifestyle and the occupation of the people who lived in the house. Ultimately the architecture of all the houses depict the joint family system that prevailed during that time, with wide spacious halls, storage space for groceries, goods, mutram or the open air space situated in the centre of the house, sit out or thinnai in the front yard to have a lazy chat or nap, which most of us miss in the present two bedroom flat system, stacked like a matchbox.

Cholamandal situated on Muttukadu Road, is the centre for art lovers and patrons of the art. It has galleries for paintings, sculptures and an open air international sculpture park around the complex. Sometimes we get to see artists in work or just walk around witnessing the stones, copper and other metals, transforming itself into beautiful shapes by the handiwork of the sculptors. The predator, The swing are a few to mention which captured my attention. The air conditioned gallery gives a peaceful atmosphere to see the paintings and nothing comes for free, as one has to shell out twenty rupees as entry fee to see their creations. Since it is prohibited to take photographs inside the gallery, here are the pictures of the sculpture park, which is around the complex.

Valluvar kottum built in memory of Thiruvalluvar, a classical tamil poet is an important landmark in Chennai. It resembles a Temple Chariot, particularly the one in Thiruvarur. Inside the monument, the poet’s verses are inscribed in pillars on the first floor corridors and it has an auditorium where exhibition of crafts from all over India is held very often.

Sri Ranganathar Temple

Sri Ranganathar temple is located in Devadanam (Devargal visited and worshiped the lord and hence the name )a village, few kilometres from ponneri in Thiruvallur District. The 18 feet long deity is apparently longer than the Ranganathar in Srirangam temple in Trichy. It is a very small temple with a huge statue of the divine being in a state of sayanam or rest, with the goddesses beside his feet. The temple is believed to be centuries old and has been there unknown to even locals for years. Recently the temple was renovated and now adorns a fresh look. Still not many know about this temple and when they do they are in awe at the sight of the Lord. Visit this temple to have a hassle free worship, where one gets to worship god peacefully as close and as long as possible.

Boom Boom Mattukaaran
The Bull and the Mattukaaran traversing the streets of Chennai, stopping by every house, with a drum in hand making the bull dance to the beat, shaking its head and legs answering to the trainers questions and getting to hear nice things from this Mattukaaran is a scene that has become obscure in this century. This pretty looking black bull is called Ramu and I caught him walking with his mattukaaran in a village. ( I don’t think the bull was happy doing this and neither am I )

The Government General Hospital was started in 1664 by the British East India Company. After a century this state owned hospital building was reconstructed and what stands now is the two majestic towers, one of the best in the state. It is situated opposite to Central Railway Station.

Chennai is seeing a sudden rise of Shopping Complexes. With the increase in population, there is an increasing need for entertainment. There was a time when people used to throng Spencer Plaza like swarming bees, but now huge malls are sprouting every year, that seem to cater to the needs of Chennai consumers.
One such Mall is the Express Avenue at Royapettah, run by The Indian Express group. This extensive Mall spread across acres is allegedly South Asia’s biggest shopping complex. Walk in with a heavy wallet to witness brands that you have never heard before, products that you have never seen, unlimited choice of food that drives you crazy wondering which one to pick, 8 multiplexes with a beautiful dim lit interior to watch your favourite flick, video games for children and walk out with aching feet and maybe aching heart after spending on those expensive brands.

This Magnificent White Building was built by Loganatha Mudaliar and named after Lord Ripon, the then Governor- General of British India. The Municipal Corporation of Chennai has been functioning from here since 1913. This edifice is known for its architecture and the clock.

Named after Queen Victoria, this is an historical edifice built by the British in the year 1882. This building, well known for its architecture is now in a dilapidated condition. The Chennai Corporation has planned to renovate this structure and the work is underway. Hope they restore its lost magnificence.

Thiruvallikeni (Triplicane)

Thiruvallikeni got its name from 'Thiru Alli Keni’, meaning sacred Lilly pond denoting the pond in front of famous Parthasarathy Temple. Thiruvallikeni is well known for bachelor’s mansion, temple, food, historical landmark Bharathiyar’s Illam and being located near the coastal area, its nearby attraction is the Marina beach.

One of the oldest temple in Chennai built in 8th century, is the abode of Lord Krishna(parthasarathy) and Vedhavally thayaar. Sarathy meaning Charioteer, parthasarathy means the charioteer of Arjuna. The intricate carvings of the gopuram and the temple is an architectural marvel. This is the only temple where we see the Lord Venkatakrishnan(parthasarathy) with a moustache. Puliyodarai a tangy rice which is offered as prasaadam is very popular in this temple. This year (2010) the temple had organised a kolu in the temple for the first time in its history which attracted quite a lot of people.

Subramania Bharathi a gem in the field of Tamil poetry, lived in Thiruvallikeni in this house for a period of one year. He used to frequently visit the temple which is right opposite to his house and feed the elephant there. We can see pictures of Bharathiar, his family, other famous freedom fighters and documentation of photographs about bharathiar in his house now. The photographs took me back to the black and white period and can’t help feeling proud of this Ettayapuram poet and at the same time it is saddening to think he could not live to see his country get Independence.

Ratna cafe' built in the year 1948, is heavily packed on a Sunday evening, many waiting for their turn to get table. Their famous Idly and Sambhar is served, to say correctly sambhar is poured from a little jug over a pair of Idlies, submerging and soaking them in 'Idi Sambhar' (one variety of sambhar). The sambhar has a tinge of sweetness and as the sambhar keeps pouring every time we ask more, we end up eating more sambhar than Idlies (Though no complaints). The coffee tasted good, expect that it was not hot.

Karbagambal mess
This mess in Mylapore, allegedly a famous eatery, was a complete disappointment. For lunch they serve variety rice (vathakuzhumbu rice, sambhar rice, curd rice), without vegetables (porial served only with sambhar rice), keerai vadai and a few chips (vathal). The food was tasteless and sour, curd rice tasted like thin porridge, had to leave the place hungry and disappointed. Has recession hit Chennai? Still wondering if we had stepped into the wrong place .
