Most wedding photo albums are pretty much the same as they were fifty years ago but technology is starting to allow more modern variations on this. 1,300 Vintage Wedding Dresses Ready For Sale

More than 1,300 vintage wedding dresses throw out in an unfilled building will be switched into scholarships for disadvantaged students in a mysterious case of hoarding that could give in $25,000.

When a local developer acquired a building earlier this year on Olive Street downtown, he went to clear out the remnants from before tenants. He initiates some office furniture and a giant stack of packages on weighty wooden pallets. Within each package was a colorful collection of cocktail, ballroom and other special-occasion wedding dresses from decades past.

The previous holder wasn't paying attention in retrieving the contents, so the developer, who claimed on anonymity, contributed the lot to the Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis in September.

The foundation operates a successful thrift store to benefit its need-based scholarship program.
"It was a great donation, but we were a little scared" of the volume, said Kim Abel, associate director of the foundation. She said that jaws dropped when they realized what they had. It took three days for 14 workers and volunteers from the shop to sort through the boxes. They spent six hours a day in an empty building with no air conditioning.

"The work conditions weren't great, but we were smiling the whole time because all the dresses were so pretty and so different," Abel said. "We kept saying, 'Look at this one.'"

In the end, they carted out more than 1,300 dresses and left hundreds more behind that were too damaged to sell. The dresses fill about 28 racks in a vacant 1,500-square-foot retail space that was donated to the shop in the Old Orchard section of Webster Groves. Although some of the dresses are in pristine condition, such as a soft, sleeveless floor-length silk gown that ties at the neck, others had visible signs of wear, such as a rip near the hem of a fluffy formal dress that was perhaps a summer wedding gown in a former life.

A floor-length baby blue jersey gown from the 1970s with a line of ruffles rimming the neck and then cascading down the front was also plucked from the pile along with a hip-hugging, knee-length cocktail dress swirled with cobalt blue and kelly green from the 1940s that is screaming for a pill box hat and day gloves.

The collection is a wild kaleidoscope of colors and styles from five decades beginning with the '40s.

No two are identical. Some have been worn. Some still have original tags.

The ScholarShop is selling them for $5 to $60, with the average price being $25.

Speculation about where the dresses came from is rampant but nearly impossible to unravel.

The only theory that seems plausible is that a local collector died without listing the treasure trove in his or her estate.

There is a rumor that the collection belonged to a local man with a "vintage dress fetish," and then there's the possibility that a local shop owner may be the unsuspecting dress benefactor.

"Alice was a pack rat in a good way," said Jennifer Stauber of her aunt, who founded Alice's Vintage Clothes, now located in the Loop, about 40 years ago. Alice Stauber died 15 years ago of breast cancer, and Jennifer took over the business. Because her aunt didn't leave a treasure map to all the warehouses full of her stock, Stauber had to play detective.

Alice left at the back at least three houses blocked to the brim with vintage wedding dresses, and Stauber eventually hunted down a few more locations she had been using as storerooms.

"It was impossible to track down everything," Stauber said. A warehouse full of vintage wedding dresses in South County was outlined to Alice but only after the clothing was being sold by a third party at a flea market. Stauber, who is looking to sell her aunt's store, said she was happy that the dresses were being welcomed.

"If it is from Alice, I think she'd be happy that the collection went to the (foundation). It's really a great organization," Stauber said. "I'm just glad they didn't throw them in a Dumpster or something."

Leah Dizon is a television talent, model, Gravure idol, singer, actress, and TV personality in Japan, born in Las Vegas, Nevada, US. Her ethnicities include Chinese, Filipino and French. In 2006, she moved to Tokyo, Japan after signing with a Japanese talent agency and made her singing debut under Victor Entertainment with a download exclusive song, "Fever", a cover of Kylie Minogue's hit song.

Leah Dizon's third photobook titled Heaven, was released October 5, 2007. It includes a DVD.

Dizon released her fourth single entitled "Love Paradox" on March 26, 2008. The Title track is an American like Urban song, and the B-side "Under the same sky" is a mid-tempo ballad. The same day, she also released her fourth photobook, "Pure Leah."

On April 18 it was announced that Leah's song, Under the Same Sky, will be used as the theme song for the Japanese drama, Tokyo Prom Queen. Leah will also make a guest appearance on the show as Naomi, the prom queen from the previous year.

Her fifth single, Vanilla was released on June 25, 2008. Her second album, Communication!!!, was released August 20, 2008.

In October 2008, Leah held a press conference confirming her marriage to a Japanese stylist. She confirmed that she was 4 months pregnant at the time of the announcement and her baby is due sometime next Spring. Leah said she hopes to make a comeback after the birth of her baby.

Dizon's first concert DVD, LIVE Communication!!! was released on December 10, 2008. The DVD features live performances of songs from both her albums.

It is almost a century ago, during World War I (1914 – 1918) that Coco Chanel did away with the crinoline and bustle form and offered alternative style of dressing – men’s pullover sweaters, sailor jackets and straight skirts so that women can “work” while the men were fighting the war.

“The Great War” ended in 1918, and the changes it brought stayed, including women’s manner of dressing. Fast-forward 91 years – the world is still fighting wars and women are in the trenches side by side with men. It is no longer just G.I. Joe; G.I. Jane had broken the combat barrier.
Karolina Kurkova’s character “Cover Girl” is not just a work of fiction; she exists in real life; G.I. Jane is a fighter pilot, even a ground combatant. Women’s roles and society’s perception of her role has changed. And, it is continually changing.
Like Coco Chanel who had to re-invent how women dressed because of World War I, designers today have to deal with the many roles of women, which by the way are also constantly changing. As in the case of “Cover Girl,” a woman can be supermodel one day, G.I. Jane the next.
Designers have understood this. Though G.I. Jane wears a uniform, women’s style and taste are varied. Hence, we see Donatella Versace dressing strong women, today’s glamazons; while Giorgio Armani dresses these same women in pants and pant suits.

Dean & Dan Caten of DSquared understand that women can be party animals at one time but be touched by Jesus the next. Roberto Cavalli sees them as rock & roll royalty but also sends them to safaris.

Rihanna Causes Ruckus With Last-Minute Shopping Spree

Rihanna might not be an early Christmas shopper, but she made up for it with gusto with a whirlwind last-minute shopping spree at Los Angeles' Grove Tuesday afternoon, PopEater reports exclusively.

The whole affair caused an intense security buzz in Nordstrom's when the heavily under cover Rihanna and a male friend worked their way through the men's department.

"Rihanna did her best to keep it under wraps. She had a hood over her hair, which was blonde, and big sun glasses on," says one shopper. "But there was no mistaking it was her."

"They started off in the sneakers department and made their way over to the clothing after picking up a pair," says one shopper. "People were rifling through Joe's Jeans and almost dropping them when they looked up to see who they were shopping with. Needless to say a lot of people suddenly needed Joe's Jeans at that moment."

Outside the store, mall security guards literally sprinted to Nordstrom's to get on the scene, while plain-clothed security guards looked on inside the store. A relaxed Rihanna picked her way through a number of men's shirts, jeans and accessories. "She was like, I'll have one of these, and one of these. She might be hard up for time before Christmas, but she was chilled out and in a great mood. And she's a woman who knows what she wants."

Rihanna and her male pal even yucked it up while checking Rihanna's items out. "They pulled up chairs and you would have thought they were at a bar chatting," says the shopper. "He had a big grin on his face and she was constantly giggling."

Her other shopping scene was not as relaxed. Nike store officials had to close the store down when Rihanna entered and uniformed guards kept shoppers from entering the store. A crowd of 100 shoppers waited in the hope of a Rihanna appearance post-Nike shopping. It was not to be, she and her pal snuck out the back door.

Here's to Luella

Tonight, as 2009’s Designer of the Year is announced at the British Fashion Awards, I feel we should be raising a glass to the outgoing incumbent, Luella Bartley. No matter that her label recently went under after the Italian factory producing her work went bust and her Singapore-based backer pulled out; that does not detract from the fact that Bartley achieved what few designers (Brit, or otherwise) ever do – a brand-world view, whose quirky, pony-mad, naughty wit ignited true love and affection among hard-to-con teenagers.

There aren’t many designers who inspire that kind of fervour in young girls. Her name has resonance with eight- to 18-year olds and, handled cleverly, could fan outwards to reach mothers, aunts, grannies and godmothers who need to know the “right” gift to give our little darlings. Luella Bartley hair bobbles, pencil cases, secret diaries, numnahs and memory sticks – I see it all.

What went wrong in the last business set-up was that almost everything produced under the label was completely out of the reach of the customers who adored it most.

Bartley has wisely headed off to Cornwall to look after her three children and to do more riding while she mulls over what to do next, but I predict a bright future for her. As a sparky ex-journalist with a satirical bent and a sharp talent for observation, she has other cards up her sleeve. Long-term, I bet she can turn that irrepressible persona into all kinds of merchandising spin-offs that might not have much to do with the onerous business of producing fashion collections four times a year.

Meanwhile, if you need to make any teenager’s year, Luella’s clothes and accessories – collector’s trophies to anyone with the wit to recognise it – are selling at steep discounts on luella.com and other outlets on the internet. Her spring/summer 2010 collection was never produced, but items from her hit collection last year are available.

Coat envy

Last week, I was in Shanghai for the Chanel show, but the scoop I’ve brought back – in spite of the outrageous, surreal and excessive experience of sitting on a moored pontoon in the Huangpu River, watching models wearing Chanel versions of Chinese Red Guard caps walk by – is about something home-grown.

Imagine the vignette: I’m walking through the lantern-lit gardens of the Yongfoo Elite dining club and spy an encounter between two of the world’s most stylish women, whose clothes are obsessively documented by press and bloggers. Lady Amanda Harlech, Lagerfeld’s stylist and muse, is sitting on a wall on the edge of an ornamental pond, hunched elegantly into a slightly stiff, three-quarter-length, khaki wool coat, with the collar flipped up. I’ve not set eyes on a coat of instant wantability for a long time. It’s the epitome of ahead-of-the-game rightness, falling as it does within the genre of “military” that is the coming thing for next year, while also appearing to be of classy quality, cut and finish.

At first sight, I assume it’s Chanel, but don’t recognise it from any previous collections, so that’s odd. I fall to speculating whether Harlech’s wearing some sort of advance item Lagerfeld’s whipped up for her? It could be Balenciaga, I supposed, or Fendi, perhaps. It also had the plain-but-beautiful air of a new Phoebe Philo-era Celine about it. Anyway, it’s clearly a garment of such distinction I could never get my hands on it. Damn.

Just then, I see Carine Roitfeld, editor of French Vogue coming up on the flank. She stops, turns her glance toward Harlech and, like me, visibly experiences irritating coat-identification failure.

After two beats, she cracks. “Very nice, this one,” she says, leaning over for a better look. “But who’s it by?” Harlech pulls open the coat and flashes the label. “Oh! It’s Aubin & Wills, a new company I found in London.” I suppress a yelp of laughter.

Aubin & Wills, to my knowledge (I wrote about it in this column last summer), is the older profile sister-brand to the teenage cult, Jack Wills. I get emails from them every week, but I’ve never bothered to open them, chiefly because the pictures looked naff. Now I have, I can reveal that the mystery item is the Aireshire coat, (pictured left, £498; aubinandwills.com). A triumph, then, both for the affordable British upper-high street and for Lady Amanda, whose sharp stylist’s eye selected the best thing from a little-known source.

Shopping heaven

I’m in love with Urban Outfitters. I’ve been working up a small passion for the British arm of the American retailer, because it has such a rapid turnover of fantastically original home and gift things in its stores. Whoever’s behind that shop understands that, apart from wanting to dress up and go out on a Saturday, kids and young people have other passions, chiefly, taking photos of themselves for Facebook, listening to music and decorating whatever tiny spaces they occupy. Thus, recently, I’ve bought a zebra-patterned rug (£20); a variety of ingenious photo-display devices, including personalisable Christmas baubles (£5); and I’m hovering over a vintage-style digital camera, (pictured, £170), Fifties pink earphones (£50) and a vinyl-record player (pictured, £120). There’s even a mini-sewing machine (£15) in there – and at pocket-money prices. OK, this is all seasonal stuff but, year-round, I always look into Urban Outfitters weekly to see what it’s thought of next. Nice to see, then, that this retailer has just released figures to show it’s thriving – it deserves it. There are now branches in most major cities and urbanoutfitters.com is booming.

A base layer is crucial for added warmth in high altitudes. Uniqlo’s HeatTech thermals range is perfect - take your from pick from leggings, tops and vests in fun, eye-popping neons. Layer under a cashmere hoodie, such as those by new label Chinti and Parker, for extra cosiness.

Designer skiwear can be something of a hit-and-miss affair; all too often, it’s a case of prioritising style over practicality. Should you have the money to spare, designer accessories are a safer bet – Chanel’s simple goggles (£300) and chic wooden skis (£1,900), both emblazoned with the house logo, are discerning without being ostentatious. Which is what, as a rule of thumb, your ski style should be.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show aired this Wednesday, and as always, it gave us motivation to go to the gym, and showed us how to spice up our lingerie with random items like flowered lattice! Perhaps this is why the craft queen, Martha Stewart was in the audience.

This year one of the most prominent trends on the glittering runway was greek goddess meets Xena Warrior Princess. Adriana Lima sported arm cuffs, Karolina Kurkova wore a leather half-corset, and most of the models’ legs were laced up with ribbons. This style was a departure from the typical cute and glitzy looks seen in previous years.

Of course if the Victoria Secret models were to be any sort of actual Greek warrior, it would most likely be Athena. Cue the long and flowing sheer drapery — Miranda Kerr’s gold leaf necklace, and Alessandra Ambrosio’s gold wings. Still, no Victoria Secret Fashion Show would be complete without Heidi Klum strutting around with a giant, twinkling, pink bow attached to her back! But our favorite part of the show? Watching Marisa Miller cure her pre-show nerves with a chocolate glazed doughnut! We loved watching silly backstage moments like these amidst the runway footage. It showed us that maybe we’re not so different from angels afterall!
