Fashion Designer, Maria B graduated from Pakistan School of Fashion Design and launched her label ‘Maria B’ in Lahore back in March 1999. During her four years at the Fashion School, Maria learnt to make patterns, drape and stitching by hand.

Fashion designer, Maria Belal, known as Maria B, has rocked the catwalks with her hip and glamorous designs, not only in Pakistan but also in Paris, Milan and New York. Her label is known for its cotton shalwar Kameez and embroidered evening wear, all meticulously cut and stitched into chic and modern styles.

Maria B, in her student days participated for the first time in ‘Forcea’, a competition in Belgium for young designers and walked away with the “Les Etoiles De La Mode” Award. While recalling her thoughts on the event she said, “I had designed some modern, futuristic pieces, but I had used traditional embroideries and indigenous materials. I didn’t expect much, but I did try my best – after all, we were the first batch from Pakistan to participate in this event”

Very hardworking and ambitious, Maria B had a dream to make Pakistan’s name in the international fashion scene and she truly achieved that. She definitely gets the credit to show Pakistani heritage to the people around the world. Her main goal is to export her outfits abroad, which is quite a challenging task but this extremely talented designer is doing well for her brand is getting well known recognition in Paris, Milan and New York.

This is the store where you can pick up a cotton embroidered shalwar kameez (of course with the trademark karma shalwar) for your little princess to wear to a playdate or her 1st birthday party dress ( the most monumental milestone outfit as any mom will tell you), to a mini me of a Karma Pink formal you own to wear to a wedding to a summer dress for a family brunch or that perfect outfit for Eid. Whether you are an obsessive mother like me, a doting dad or shopping for the ideal gift for your goddaughter, this is the store that I always wished existed here back home.

My earliest memory is raiding my mother’s closet and being utterly fascinated with the treasures and goodies that came out of it and the unlimited possibilities they held for me. Her French chiffon dupattas that became my saris, her fringed moonlight scarves so definitive of the 70s, the printed maxi dresses that I used as trailing capes, these were all my first fashion inspirations. My parents have boxes of pictures of me in various forms of draping, dressing up and posing with my mother’s wardrobe as ammunition. A long standing family anecdote is when one day at the age of two and a half, I was dressed in a pink tutu with Mom’s Jackie O glasses, her high heels, red lipstick and a dozen necklaces around my neck, someone asked me what I planned to be once I grew up, I replied 'A princess’.

I relived all this when my daughter Arianna started growing up and I reluctantly had to start sharing my necklace collection, count backwards from a million when all my Karma Pinks became her ‘superhero’ capes, my favorite lipgloss disappeared, my Chanel 5 became her ‘tish tish’ and my precious Loubutons were wobbled around it. From the age of 1, nobody could tell this child what to wear and she to this day continues to put her own outfits together. From days of drawing her inspiration from Rainbow Brite to Hannah Montana and of course the most beloved platoon of Disney princesses, Saad and I are learning to deal with her creative experimenting by giving it numerous titles from a transitional phase to growing up to self expression.

Everytime I would travel now, I would find myself making a list of all the important upcoming events in Arianna’s life for the next 12 months so I could buy that right dress or special outfit from abroad due to the lack of having anywhere back home to get it from. Whenever a wedding came along, I would make her a mini me of whatever Karma I was wearing and spend the rest of the evening telling parents why I didn’t do children’s wear.

Giving an interview in January 2010, I was asked how young did I think girls were when they started being aware of what to wear and I repeated the story of my childhood and realized that you’re never too young to understand the importance of quality, fashion and all the pretty sparkly things in life. From my own memories and from what I derive from the reminiscing talks with all my inner sanctum of girlfriends, we all remember that first party dress, that sentimental frock we wore to tatters, the euphoric feeling of having that right shade of pink to the fluttering excitement of the first designer purchase. In today’s world, I see my daughter and my nieces and realize that these children have learnt to appriciate the finer things much sooner than we did in our time. Since we teach our children the right, wrong, good and bad from the first day, at what point do we teach them the beautiful? I thought about this all the way back to the studio and Karma Princess was born.

As Karma turns a decade old this year, we are extremely proud to be the first fashion house in Pakistan to delve into children’s wear with the same standards, passion and excitement as we had for our other two brands. This one is perhaps closer to my heart being a mother. This store is as much for the parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents and godmothers who understand and believe our children bring the ultimate joy and contentment and that instilling an early secure sense of self worth is the best gift we can ever get them.

Karma Princesses are about butterflies, sparkles, dreams, daisy chains, butter icing and rainbows. They explore the world with an innocence yet inner knowing. They are the girls everyone remembers at school. They believe in Peter Pan. They dance to Abba and their favorite food is Magnolia cupcakes. This is where, Newport West steps into the scene. Collaborating with this American based company is perhaps the best thing that could have happened to Karma. When Newport West first came to Pakistan, they were willing to invest in a reputed design house but one that they could trust with complete ease. They were willing to completely take over the financial and corporate side of the business and let the designers do what they originally meant to do. It believed that a design house running purely on talent needed a direction and a structure that they could fall back on and for them Karma seemed to fill out the requisite form to precision. And so Newport West made Karma into the only corporation of its kind in the country.
