Dear Santa,
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS...FASHION!!! I loooove this time of year!!! The smell of pine, cinnamon and gingerbread. The hustle and bustle of the malls. That nip in the air and exciting decorations. Family, friends and loved ones gathering from near and far. The spirit and magic of Santa Clause and all the holiday parties and events that give me a reason to dress up! Apache prints, sequins, tulle and satin make my Christmas bright! Forget a WHITE Christmas...Im dreaming of a fashionably BRIGHT Christmas filled with love and sales at all major department stores! What I'm excited most about is seeing my family and friend's faces when they open up their gifts:) I enjoy GIVING and making others happy and spreading holiday cheer to all. This is what this season is all about...giving. I just choose to be fashionable while I do it and YOU should too! Btw Santa...I've been a very fashionable girl this year;)

Being cold never looked so HOT

2011-11-17T22:27:00.002-05:00

Sure it’s cold out but that doesn’t mean your winter wardrobe has to be! Sweaters are my fav HOT fashion item to wear when the air gets a little bit nippier and the harsh winter weather begins to push through. What's not to love about sweaters? They’re warm, fuzzy, comfortable, cute and come in a variety of styles. Long, off the shoulder, cropped, knit, cotton, solid, patterns, oversized, fitted and an array of colors! Sweaters are the perfect match with a pair of leggings or jeans but I also like pairing them with shorts, skirts and tights! During the winter I enjoy a lot of cozy lounging and cuddling and it’s important to look fashionable while doing it! Sweaters are my go to for a cold night in or a HOT night out;) So while everyone else is freezing and hating the cold, you’ll be enjoying it because you’re hot, and HOT never gets cold.

the IN crowd...Ann Taylor Fashion Show and Shopping Party

2011-11-15T19:41:00.001-05:00

What can be better than Happy Hour after a long, hard day at the office? An Ann Taylor Fashion Show and Shopping Party of course! After escaping my desk at work, I grabbed some friends and headed to the exclusive fashion event that was being held at Ann Taylor's new concept store in downtown Washington, D.C. It was so much fun and the store is beautiful! Great lighting and gorgeous chandeliers. It was a real treat to be one of the first people to see the new collection and let me tell you...it's to DIE for! I wanted to purchase everything! Shoes, belts, faux furs, holiday dresses and lots of shiny jewelery. We enjoyed our exclusive shopping experience as we sipped champagne, ate yummy cupcakes and met some very cool fashionistas:) I sensed a theme as I viewed all the new inventory and Electric Blue seemed to be it. Definitely a color I will be adding to my collection this season. I use to only think of Ann Taylor as a professional clothing store for very petite women, but a good friend of mine is an Ann Taylor Stylist and seeing her amazing, quality clothing has definitely opened my eyes, not to mention the great friend discounts;) Thanks to her my closet is quickly filling up with lots of Ann Taylor merchandise. If your're ever in the Washington, D.C. area, I would strongly suggest you check out the store. There probably won't be any champagne or cupcakes, but I'm sure your shopping experience will still be fabulous!

MeMe's Spotlight: Cotton Candy Playground

2011-11-02T21:28:00.002-04:00

Cotton Candy Playground is blowing up faster than balloons right now and it’s all because of the mastermind behind the scenes, Nicole. I met Nicole via email through a very close friend of mine and I had the pleasure of learning more about her, her style and booming business! Check out the awesome chat we had below...

Nicole, I really enjoyed your website! My best friend gushed about you so I just had to go and check it out for myself. lol. Very cute and smart. I LOVE the name, Cotton Candy Playground(Cotton Candy Hair). How and when did it come about?

That has been my oldest daughter's nickname for her hair since she was 3. I can't take credit for that :). But it's also from a book I wrote and Illustrated two years ago called I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair! Recently I expanded my product line and decided to form an umbrella company called Cotton Candy Playground which houses my apparel line as well as an upcoming stationary line that I'm really excited about, but I kept the name of the website cause I love it so much.

Well I'm certainly in love with it:) I noticed that you also have a children's book that you not only wrote, but illustrated as well. That's incredible! What inspired you to do this and what is the book about? Are you planning on writing more books in the future?

I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair! was inspired by an incident a few years back when my, then 3yr old, daughter came home from a playdate crying and asking us to make her hair straight and yellow. It was heartbreaking! After months of looking for books not only about hair but about absolute self love and acceptance and not being able to find any for 3year olds, I decided to write one myself. I've written a few more stories and actually created a series in which each story focuses on the principles of absolute self love and acceptance. I haven't released the second story yet but my dream is for this project to continue to grow so hopefully you'll see more stories from me in the near future.

I think this is incredible and much needed! It is very important for young girls to learn self love and worth at a young age. Keep 'em coming! Society today views long, straight hair as beautiful. Why do you think it is important for black women and women of color to embrace their natural hair? Why/When did you go natural?

It's just important for people period to know that they are perfect just the way they are, no matter what that way might be! And If I'm gonna love myself, and believe me I LOVE myself, then I have to love all of me. Who decided that beauty that looks like me isn't as good as beauty that looks like Heidi Klum? Who said kinky hair isn't beautiful?? It's me and that means it is! Period. It's funny listening to myself today though because even after my 3yr old came to me in tears begging for "straight, yellow hair" I was still relaxing mine. I didn't connect the dots until almost a year later. I was working on the illustrations for my book when it just hit me that I could tell my girls to love their "cotton candy hair" all I wanted, but the example that mommy sets by chemically straightening my own would speak louder. I had braids at the time and I immediately got up, went to the bathroom and cut my braids off at the new growth. It wasn't easy at first. I would look in the mirror and seriously not want to go outside, smh, but I had to get real about what those voices in my head were telling me... that to be better I had to be something other than myself... and that message pissed me off. I couldn't have my daughters believing that nonsense and I wasn't going to believe it either.

Wow, that must have been tough for you to witness but I think you handled the situation very well and I'm sure your daughter will really apprciate that! Now I am a HUGE fashion buff and I love that your t-shirts are not only cute, but they have a positive message. What are you hoping your customers gain by wearing one of your tees?

I just want people to feel good wearing my shirts. For me, Cotton Candy Playground is a celebration of diversity, of self love, of acceptance. And if someone puts on one of my shirts and feels a little more pride that day or walks a little taller, that would mean everything to me.

Absolutely:) What has the feedback been like since Cotton Candy Playground was born?

When I released "I LOVE my Cotton Candy Hair!" two years ago I was blown away by the feedback from parents saying how much the story has meant to them and their daughters. But when I launched Cotton Candy Playground a almost 2 months ago, I was floored at the amount of support I received. The secret is that I never intended to launch an apparel line, at least not now, I just liked graphic design. A few days before the Curly Nikki meetup in LA I decided to put a few of my designs on some tshirts. The feedback I received at that event was incredibly flattering, but it wasn't until Curly Nikki posted pictures on her facebook page a few days later that this thing exploded! I received so many emails from people saying how much they loved the shirts and asking when/ where they could purchase that I had to put everything on fast forward and launch the apparel line. This whole thing has been an incredible blessing and I am still just blown away and really so appreciative of all the love I'm receiving.

That is such a blessing! Instant success doesn't happen too often. Does Cotton Candy Playground keep you pretty busy? Do you have a team that's assisting you or is this a solo show?

Currently it's a solo show so YES I am extremely busy! I joke with my friends that I need a street team, like the Bad Boy street team that Diddy had back in the day that was just out, networking, making it happen!! That would be the bomb! Because right now I am finding it extremely difficult to manage my job as a mommy of 3 young children and also do the legwork in terms of marketing, promoting & social networking that I feel can really take Cotton Candy Playground to the next level.

You are definitely who I would call Super Woman! lol. While browsing the site I noticed that you will also be selling stationary! Thats great! What else can we expect from you and Cotton Candy Playground?

Aside from the stationary line, which I hope to launch by Thanksgiving, my immediate plans include introducing more fly tees, eventually releasing the second book in my children's book series, and introducing a custom order section where people can customize apparel, prints, and stationary. Yeah, a street team would be perfect right about now, lol.

Your plate is definitely full, which is great! What are you hoping to accomplish with Cotton Candy Playground?

Cotton Candy Playground is a place for everybody. I want those come check us out to know that they will not just be included, but celebrated and lifted up.

Now Nicole, it's only right that I ask about your personal style. Afterall, this is a fashion blog! What trends are you into these days?

If there is any question I wish I had a better answer for it is this one! Truth is lately my style has consisted of nothing more than tees, jeans and flats... and not even cute ones... it's so sad. I have a mean shoe game but it's been a while since they've seen the light of day. I am out of the loop on the latest trends (which I know is pure madness considering I'm being featured on a fashion blog!!) but I am going to take this opportunity to do something I have never done before and that is blame my kids!! Is that allowed?? You're probably not buying it but with this business, my household and three kids 6 & under to chase around, I barely have time to put lip gloss on before I head out the door. I do however, aspire to be one of those women who manages to do all the things I do and more, all while looking effortlessly fabulous. I think I can start by taking some pointers from you :)

You're too kind:) With a little time and the right fashion staples, you can be a Fashion Super Mom in no time! Thank you so much for taking time out of your oh so busy schedule to share your sweet Cotton Candy with me and my followers. I look forward to what's to come and I wish you MUCH continued success!

Just another Sunday...

2011-10-30T20:14:00.002-04:00

P.S. I no longer go jogging outside...check out the scar on my knee:( Tragic fall. Im so clumsy!

*Sigh* so many things to do on a lazy Sunday...go for a walk, eat pancakes, go to church, do laundry, watch a movie or have an impromptu fashion photoshoot! Sunday is the day of rest and what better way to relax than a day at the park in a ruffle skirt, cardigan, trouser socks, leopard heels, pseudo-intellectual glasses and diamonds and pearls! Since it was such a gorgeous day, I wanted to do some blogging in the park, but putting on any old thing seemed kind of boring so I decided to dress up for the occassion:) Whenever you feel like dressing up or being glam but don't really have anywhere to go...do it anyway! Walk the dog in your pink bow heels, gas up the car in your party dress or go grocery shopping draped in pearls! Who says that these things can only be worn at parties or special occassions? NOT ME...and when youre asked why youre so dressed up just say because... it's JUST ANOTHER SUNDAY.

Makeup, hair, clothes, heels, flat irons, steamers, hustling, bustling, models, lights...camera...RUNWAY. I told you I would do my best to get some backstage pics of the Blue and Green Fashion Show I assisted in, and as you can see, I came through for you fashionistas! But there was something that was out of my control...I went to the fashion show to be a STYLING ASSISTANT and ended up being a MODEL! Now, you and I both know that I am sooo NOT a model, but one of the original models was not able to make it so I was asked to fill in. Even though modeling is totally not my thing, I'll always step up to the plate in the name of fashion. Afterall, this was a fashion emergency. The fashion show was lots of fun and featured the fall collection by a.d.o. and vegan shoes by Neuaura. The models were a blast to work with and trying on different fashions is always great. I wore a winter white blazer and wrap dress that was VERY comfortable and cute...I wished I could have kept the outfit! I am excited to assist(be it styling or modeling) with the next show:) Be sure to check out http://www.carbondc.com/ for all of your sustainable fashions.

FALL in love...with Layering!

2011-09-22T12:21:00.002-04:00

Falling in love with boys? That's soo last season! This year, FALLing in love with fashion is what's hot and I'm smitten. Fashion layering is the love cure-all when it comes to that eternal question; "What to wear when it's no longer hot, but not quite cold?" Fashionably transitioning from summer to fall can be a bit tricky because, just like love, the begininng can start off kind of cold and uncertain, but as the relationship continues, much like the day, things start to heat up! Wearing lots of layers such as blazers, cardigans, tees, trench coats, capes and sweaters allows us to adjust to this unpredictable weather by peeling off layers and still being fashionable. There are many layers of our hearts one has to get through before we're comfortable, so why should it be any different when it comes to fall fashion. Now, as love pulls us in deeper, nightfall arrives and the temp begins to cool again. No worries...you have your friends to shield you, or in fashion's case, your layers to keep you warm. So this fall, don't count on traditional love to get you through the unpredicatable season...FALL madly in love with fashion layering and your heart will never be broken.

NUDE-ity

2011-09-05T19:40:00.000-04:00

When you are challenged with what coordinates with uncommon combination colors like pink and red, turquoise and yellow, orange and blue, ect., I say get NAKED. Yea, that's right. Go NUDE and rid yourself of color. It's the perfect solution for fashion challenges like this. An outfit that has lots of color can be paired with shoes and accessories that have no color at all. It gives your ensemble the perfect balance and won't over power you or your look. On the other hand, nude, ironically, can be the POP to an outfit. For instance, I love wearing black and white with nude shoes/accessories. I get bored with the standard black, red or pink with black and white. It is very expected and Fashionistas are all about the unexpected. White looks very chic with nude tones as well. So the next time you feel like you have too much on or you want to shake things up a bit, just take it off and expose yourself! Strip down, uncover, get naked, bare it all...go NUDE. Yes, everyone will stare and that's exactly what you want them to do;)

2011-08-24T21:04:00.002-04:00

I was never really good at those little connect the dot games we played as children, but I consider myself proficient when it comes to connecting the dots in my wardrobe;) Polka dots have been around forever and I've always consider those little circles classic. Polka dots are chic and fun and gives an otherwise dull top or dress lots of visual interest. Recently these dots have been popping up on everything; sunglasses, shorts, pants and even shoes. I love it! A closet filled with those fun, fabulous spots?? I'll sign that DOTTED line anytime!

Rompin' Shorts!

2011-08-18T12:57:00.001-04:00

Psst...Did you notice the 50% off in the background? I love me a good sale! Ok, back to the pics:)

So here's the deal...rompers are my shorts equivalent to the maxi dress. One piece, easy breezy, no muss...no fuss;) I absolutely adore shorts, and rompers made my adoration for them sky rocket! I enjoy being able to slip on a romper and throw on some cute flats or flops; but I also like being able to put one on with some sexy heels, great accessories, grab a clutch and hit the town! The same applies to shorts. Both are so versatile and easy...not to mention flirty(I mean do I have to state the obvious...LEGS!) Although I'm obsessed with my rompers; shorts, to me, allows one to be a little more creative. Pairing a cute, casual or sexy top with some shorts makes the coordinating process a little more exciting. Yes it requires a bit more thought than just pulling out a romper, but it allows you to show your personal unique style, and that's always a plus! I'm a busy girl, always on the go, so I like to keep things SHORT;)

MAXed Out!

2011-08-13T13:49:00.000-04:00

MAXIMIZE the number or MAXIS in your wardrobe!! They're fun, flowy, easy to wear and don't require much thought because it's only ONE piece:) When I don't have a lot of time to decide what I want to wear, Maxi dresses are my easy go to choice. They are very simple but at the same time trendy and stylish and that's what I love most about them. I am on the tall side so I was very happy when Maxi dresses made their appearance on the "must have" list. I love the way I look in them and how super comfy they are!! I have Maxis that are very casual and I have some that are a bit more dressy but I love them all the same. They sort of make me feel free and angelic in a way...lol. Whenever you're in a fabulously chill mode, I suggest you MAX and Relax;)

Bikinis and monokinis are my favs and can be found in many different colors and patterns. I think that swimwear is just as important as your everyday wear because it also reflects your personality and individual style. Get creative! Bold cheetah and leopard patterns make me feel fierce, fabulous and FELINE! In this print, I am the ruler of my kingdom. To me, it doesn't matter what the occassion is...night or day, lunch with the girls, shopping, cocktail party or even a trip to the grocery store(someplace I dont go to often...lol) are all perfect reasons to throw on a little SPARKLE! Even the most drab days can be made a little brighter with the perfect combination of sequins or glitter. Whoever said everything that glitters ain't gold, was totally wrong. SHINE on girls!!!
