New York – The theme of Reem Acra's Pre-Fall 2011 collection, shown in New York on Wednesday, Dec. 15, was "American Glamour," but the Lebanese-born designer incorporated many exotic influences in this collection of sparkly eveningwear, with looks that would be at home in a Bollywood musical or an exclusive penthouse in Dubai. They're dresses that most certainly could rock the red carpet this award's season.

And in fact, Halle Berry already donned a short gold sequined cocktail number from this collection in Los Angeles last week at Spike TV's Scream Awards for a swinging look that could have secured her another role as a Bond Girl if she'd wanted it.

From short to long, hand-beaded dresses in intricate, difficult to produce geometric patterns formed the basis of Reem Acra's collection, per her usual couture-level finishing. There were Art Deco-esque stunners in black with contrasting gold sequins, a long and lean flapper dress in emerald green with an ethereal handkerchief hem, Grecian goddess gowns with clever draping across the front for a flattering effect, shimmery in-house dyed metallic lace on luxuriously draped strapless gowns and richly dyed caftans in colors exclusive to the collection with regal gold trimmed collars.

Though there were only a few separates, these were as luxurious and evening-ready as the gowns, with wide legged pants made from fluid, thick crepe and capelets in the delicately dyed lace.

Without a doubt, Halle Berry won't be the last time we see Reem Acra designs appear on the red carpet in the coming weeks.

LONDON (Reuters Life!) – Tennis world number one Rafael Nadal is following in the footsteps of soccer players David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo to model men's underwear for Italian designer Giorgio Armani.

The fashion house announced on Friday that the 24 year-old will be the global testimonial for Emporio Armani Underwear and Armani Jeans for the spring/summer 2011 collections.

The first campaign featuring Nadal will launch in February.

Both Ronaldo and Beckham have previously stripped down to their underwear for Emporio Armani, with Beckham even posing for billboards with his wife Victoria, of Spice Girls fame.

Shoppers may have only recently cemented their purchases for the current season's cold weather wardrobes, but fashion designers in New York already have next fall's styles on their minds, and in their showrooms, as they presented Pre-Fall collections to buyers and editors this month.

With customers and retail stores demanding more and more new items, designers like Vera Wang, who showed her Pre-Fall 2011 collection on Monday, Dec. 13, have found themselves on an unrelenting cycle that has them thinking about everything from weave patterns on hosiery to rendering complicated pleats for production nearly a year ahead of when anyone will actually be wearing the garments.

"I'm going down to work on hosiery right after this," said Wang between showing Pre-Fall looks in her showroom. "I'm worried about it for the (February) show."

Wang said that it would be this collection, also known as "Fall I," not the Fall 2011 collection she'll show this February on the runway, that would determine the majority of her fall sales. Pre-fall collections will hit stores in May.

"This is supposedly the biggest collection for us, wholesale," said Wang "Seventy percent or more of fall sales comes with Fall I."

"The show means nothing, literally, in a way," she continued. "That's for editorial."

So it made sense that her Pre-Fall collection emphasized a host of versatile, wearable looks stamped with all of Wang's signatures: a hint of bling, a touch of fur, some wear-under-everything leggings (in this case, leather, for that chic biker-meets-Angelina Jolie tough girl look), layered cardigans and inventive, re-worked menswear influences.

For day, it was sporty school girl, with Wang's take on pleated apron dresses and capelets, gray felt wrap skirts with menswear-inspired pockets or cleverly layered with zippers for a more playful punk look, cardigans blinged-out with jeweled crests and cropped stretch wool trousers. It was Gothic punk preppy, like if the cast of "Twilight" met up with the cast of "Gossip Girl" and started a band.

Wang also pinched the fall staples with unexpected flourishes, adding removable goat fur collar pieces to a sharply cut wool felt coat with leather sleeve panels, or using the same fur to create a textured peplum skirt on a draped shift dress. Blouses with a demure innocence from the front, resembled a laced-up men's shirt from the back.

For evening and cocktail looks, Wang looked to both the glamorous '30s, and the Pop Art '60s, for long, draped silk gowns that begged for a velvet settee and a glass of champagne, to shift dresses that mixed high-collared Victorian fringe and tulle bibs with athletic racer backs, or jet bead fringe and just a whisper of tulle in the hem.

With Wang, it's all in that ability to go all out and make a look completely baroque with a few beaded accessories, a fur shrug, and lots of layered knits, or keeping it as simple as a pair of merino leggings worn with a thin cardigan and a t-shirt - Wang's personal uniform of choice. `Runway' designer does T-shirts for World AIDS Day

Here's a reason Mondo Guerra shared his story about being HIV positive on the reality show "Project Runway." It's just at the time, he wasn't quite sure what it was.
In hindsight, though, Guerra thinks he was compelled to it because "now I have the ability to bring attention to a cause," he says.

"Things happen for a reason," he adds. "Now that this is my life now, it has brought some opportunities. I think it's inspired a lot of other people to be courageous and step forward."

He also can raise money for AIDS research in a new partnership with online retailer Piperlime. Mondo, a "Runway" fan favorite this season, designed two limited-edition T-shirts to launch Wednesday, to coincide with World AIDS Day.

The T-shirts are for women, though Guerra notes, "They actually printed a male version in extra small just for me."

Had it up to here with crunches, push-ups and squats? Read on for energizing exercises that target the same muscle groups as those movements, but score higher points for keeping you motivated to work out. They're simple to master and don't require a lot of time or special equipment — just your determination to stay focused on your fitness goals.

Tone your middle

Pilates movements are a wonderful alternative to traditional sit-ups and crunches, notes fitness expert Chris Freytag. "Pilates movements work several muscle groups at a time, with a focus on strengthening the core [the muscles surrounding and supporting the spine]," she says. Here are two good moves to try.

Full body roll up. Lie on your back, legs extended and arms stretched overhead. Inhale, engaging the abdominal muscles, and stretch your arms up toward the ceiling. Exhale, tucking your chin to your chest, and curl up and forward until your arms are extended in front of you. Inhale and continue to pull forward, reaching your arms toward your toes. Exhale as you slowly uncurl your body back to the starting position. Repeat three to five times.

Ball roll. Sit on the floor, bring your knees toward your chest and wrap your hands around the backs of your thighs. Round your spine, from neck to tailbone, into a C-shaped curve, lifting your feet slightly off the floor. You should be positioned so that you're balancing on your bottom. Inhale and roll back onto your shoulder blades (not your neck or head). Exhale and roll back up to a seated position, trying to avoid letting your feet touch the floor. (Flexing your lower abs will help you maintain your balance in the C-curve.) Repeat three to five times.

Variation: To make this a little harder, do it with your hands placed on the sides of your calves.

Define your arms

Lifting weights and using weight machines aren't the only ways to build strength. Yoga positions can garner the same results because they require you to use your own body weight as you get into poses, hold them and move on to others, explains Michael Lechonczak, co-founder of Intelligent Yoga in New York City. "That's what makes certain poses top-notch for doing battle in the arm flab danger zone," he says. Below are two poses that will help give you a more defined upper arm.

Variation on downward dog. In the classic downward dog, you assume an inverted V position. In this variation, you change the position of your hands to further engage your arm muscles.

Start on your hands and knees with your hands 6 to 12 inches in front of your shoulders. Legs should be hip-width apart, toes curled under. Push into your palms and lift your knees off the floor, propelling your bottom into the air. (Envision a string lightly pulling the tops of your thighs back as you slowly straighten your legs; your body should look like an upside-down V.) Move your chest back toward your thighs. Then, lift your palms so only your fingertips are on the floor, firing up the arm muscles. Hold for five breaths, then return your hands to the flat position. Return to the starting position and repeat three to five times.

Four-limbed staff pose. Lie facedown on the floor, palms down next to the shoulders. Lift yourself up just 2 to 3 inches, engaging all muscles to hold the pose for about five seconds. Do five to 10 repetitions.

Strengthen your legs

Besides grabbing attention, strong thighs are crucial to healthy knees, points out Freytag. Not to mention, sore legs can often derail workouts. To get your upper leg muscles in shape, Freytag recommends these quick moves, each of which should be done 10 to 20 times with each leg.

Squeeze. Sit on the floor with your back straight, right leg extended and left knee bent. Tighten your right quads, pressing the back of your leg toward the floor. Hold for 10 seconds, then relax.

Tighten. In the same position as the Squeeze, flex your right foot and lift the leg about 6 inches. Hold for six seconds, then lower.

Lift. Sit in a chair, feet flat on the floor. Straighten your right leg, raising your foot until the leg is about parallel to the floor. Hold for six seconds, then lower.

Gianfranco Ferré, the bearded, suited 'architect of fashion', 'suffered a brain haemorrhage and died on June 15 2007, aged 62. He had been creative director of the company since 2002 when Gianfranco Ferré Spa became part of IT Holding.

He was replaced by Swedish designer Lars Nilsson. It was to be a shortlived tenure with his designs scrapped before the 2008 spring/summer shows and replaced by a team effort that aimed to more closely reflect Gianfranco Ferré's legacy.

Ferré's signature elegant, structured and feminine silhouettes had won him a client base which included Sharon Stone, Elizabeth Taylor, the Queen of Jordan, Paloma Picasso, Sophia Loren and the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

Skin, formerly of Skunk Anansie performed at the lavish after party following the Gianfranco Ferré autumn/winter 2007-8 show in Milan. Giorgio Armani remembered him as "a man of dignity and calm, with a sense of responsibility which always accompanied him".
